Find out what we did after a single Oriental fruit fly in Birkdale (Auckland) was detected in February 2025
Biosecurity New Zealand's response to this detection has closed
We did not find any other fruit flies after the first one was discovered on 20 February
Legal controls on fruit and vegetable movements have ended
a single male Oriental fruit fly was identified from a routine surveillance trap in the Auckland suburb of Birkdale
A large-scale biosecurity response followed to determine whether there were more fruit flies in the area
the plan was to get rid of any population to protect the horticulture industry and home gardens
legal controls were placed on the movement of fruit and produce out of a controlled area in Birkdale to prevent the spread of any other fruit flies that may have been present
No further Oriental fruit flies were found during the 7 weeks
giving us confidence that there was not a breeding population in the area
movement controls were lifted and the response closed
The Controlled Area Notice (CAN) enacted on 21 February 2025 restricted the movement of certain fruits and vegetables out of the Controlled Area to help prevent the spread of any fruit flies that may have been present
This CAN was revoked (removed) on 10 April 2025
Revocation of Controlled Area Notice [PDF
The Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) can affect over 300 hosts including apples
A population of Oriental fruit fly would cause control costs and production losses for commercial growers
Some countries might stop accepting our exported produce
The Oriental fruit fly is widespread in Africa and Asia
The young stages (maggots) feed inside the fruit
The thorax (behind the head) is dark or near black with 2 near parallel yellow thin strips running down each side of the thorax
The female fly has a pointed "sting" to lay eggs inside fruit (but she can't sting or bite people)

For the most up to date information on this response, visit Biosecurity New Zealand’s website
This area is divided into two zones, A and B, which have different restrictions. To check if you are in the controlled area and which zone applies to you visit Biosecurity New Zealand’s website
These restrictions mean some changes to kerbside (particularly food scraps) collections in the area
There will be no food scraps collections (the small 23L bin) in this area until further notice
Follow Biosecurity New Zealand’s instructions to dispose of your fruit and vegetable waste
Rubbish and recycling collections will continue as usual
Do not put food waste into your recycling bins or rubbish bins
except for leafy vegetables and soil free root vegetables
regardless of whether it was bought or grown
Compost and green waste from gardens also cannot be moved out of this zone
Biosecurity New Zealand is providing all households in Zone A with bins for fruit and vegetable waste
Please follow all Biosecurity New Zealand’s instructions for disposal of fruit and vegetable waste
No whole fruit and vegetables grown in the Zone B area can be moved out of the controlled area
You are free to move commercially purchased fruit and vegetables (e.g
fruit and vegetables bought at the supermarket) out of the area
recycling and food scraps collections continue as normal however all homegrown produce waste and garden waste needs to be disposed of in Biosecurity New Zealand bins located in your area
It requires a big effort from all of us to keep these fruit flies out

Legal controls banning the movement of fruit and vegetables out of an Auckland suburb will remain in place until next month
A male oriental fruit fly was found in Birkdale on the North Shore in February
Biosecurity spokesman Mike Inglis said no more of the pests had been found in surveillance traps
Specialist staff and a mobile field laboratory are cutting up fruit and vegetables and checking for any signs of larvae
Inglis said the produce restrictions would be in force until 10 April

Controls have now been imposed on the movement of fruit and vegetables in Papatoetoe
where an Oriental fruit fly was found yesterday
A biosecurity operation has been launched following the discovery of a fruit fly on Auckland’s North Shore
The single male Oriental fruit fly was discovered in a surveillance trap in a suburban backyard in Birkdale today
“This is the same species of fruit fly that we responded to in Papatoetoe recently, but it is too early to say whether the two finds are linked. Our lab will do further DNA analysis of the fly over the coming days,” said Biosecurity New Zealand commissioner north Mike Inglis
If the fruit fly established itself in New Zealand
the country’s horticulture industry would face massive economic costs
Inglis said Biosecurity New Zealand was moving quickly to look for any others and eradicate them
“We will be ramping up trapping and inspection
with daily checks in a 200-metre zone from the original find and checks every three days in a second zone out to 1500m,” he said
“The capture of a single male does not mean we have an outbreak
while we do our checks for any other fruit flies
we need community help to prevent any possible spread
we’ll be putting legal restrictions in place on the movement of fruit and vegetables out of the area where the fruit fly was found.”
Inglis said instructions about these controls and the exact area affected would be issued on Friday following the completion of an initial investigation
we ask that people who live and work in the suburb not take any whole fresh fruit and vegetables out of your property.”
Biosecurity staff would be in the community providing people with information
“You may notice increased activity in the neighbourhood as we go about inspections and trapping
Our field officers may ask to look at fruit trees on your property
They will always show you a form of official identification and will only enter your property with your permission,” Inglis said
He said there have been 13 incursions of different fruit fly in Auckland and Northland since 1996
all of which have been successfully eradicated
we responded to the detection of fruit flies in three separate suburbs over a period of several months
We traced and tracked in all three suburbs and continued until we were confident we had eliminated the pest.”
Inglis said the latest find demonstrates the benefit and effectiveness of the Ministry for Primary Industries’ lure-based fruit fly surveillance trapping network
“Our trapping network involves nearly 8000 traps set nationwide
but would be devastating for New Zealand’s horticulture industry if it were allowed to establish here
It is the second Oriental fruit fly discovered in Auckland this year after one was found in a backyard in South Auckland’s Papatoetoe last month
Over 100 extra traps were set up following the discovery on January 2 and strict biosecurity conditions were put in place
Restrictions on moving fruit and vegetables out of the area were in place for a fortnight

Controls on the movement of fruit and vegetables in Auckland’s Birkdale area have been lifted after no further evidence of the Oriental fruit fly was found in the area
Biosecurity New Zealand, the biosecurity arm of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) announced the update today
Auckland Council Head of Natural Environment Delivery
The timeline for the operation period is based on scientific advice about the life cycle of the Oriental fruit fly – so Biosecurity New Zealand can be confident that they are not dealing with a breeding population
more than 2000 individual visits were made to check the 116 fruit fly traps in the Birkdale area throughout the response
over 470 biosecurity bins were distributed in the community to collect produce waste for safe disposal and more than 954 kilos of fruit were collected and examined for any signs of fruit fly eggs or larvae
All Aucklanders are encouraged to take full advantage of the food scraps collection service and join thousands in the region who have already helped turn over 40 million kgs of food scraps into clean energy
Here’s some summer tips to beat the Autumn heat and you can also request an additional food scraps bin by contacting us.
On 20 February 2025, a single male Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) was identified from a backyard surveillance trap in the suburb of Birkdale, Auckland.
Biosecurity New Zealand mounted an operation to determine if there were more fruit flies and get rid of any population.
A controlled area notice was put in place which restricted the movement of fruits and vegetables, and approximately 100 extra fruit fly traps within a 1500m area of the original find were placed, along with MPI staff on the ground to talk to the community.
This was soon after a similar operation in Papatoetoe and Māngere.
Since then, no further adult fruit flies, eggs, larvae or pupae have been found. MPI is satisfied that the restrictions can be lifted, and response operations can be closed.
While restrictions are lifted, stay vigilant. If you think you’ve spotted an Oriental fruit fly, eggs, or larvae/maggots in your fruit, call Biosecurity New Zealand (MPI) right away at 0800 80 99 66.
MPI will continue as normal to check the 7800 fruit fly traps around the country, including hundreds of traps on the North Shore.

New Zealand’s first two community houses celebrated half a century of community support this March with an open day event funded by the Kaipātiki Local Board
The celebration at Birkdale Community House marked 50 years since the Birkdale and Beach Haven community houses were incorporated to form the Birkdale Beach Haven Community Project (BHCP) in 1975
Local board chair John Gillon says the board’s ongoing support of the BHCP
including an allocation of over $190,000 from Jan 2024 to June 2025
is an acknowledgement of the benefits they provide to the wellbeing of the Kaipātiki community
BHCP Project Lead Amanda Phillips explains that establishing the Birkdale Community House in 1973
“helped paved the way for many other community projects and community houses to follow.”
“There’s a community house or centre in most areas
I think if people can connect in with their local community house
the local community Kaimahi that are working in that area
they'll be able to find connection with other people
they'll be able to find things that help their wairua
their health and well-being and mental health
we're here to really listen to what the community has to say and then help put programmes and events in place to meet those needs and to make people feel connected.” Phillips says
Community house volunteer Karl Nebbeling has been benefiting from the Birkdale Community House’s weekly te reo Māori conversation classes

An 18-year-old woman has been arrested and charged after a burglary on Auckland’s North Shore.
A police spokesperson said the incident happened about 3am at a home in Birkdale.
Acting Waitematā East Area prevention manager Acting Inspector CJ Miles said the homeowner was woken by sounds inside their home and moved to safety in the house. They called police straight away.
“She reported loud bangs and smashing sounds inside the property,” she said.
“Our staff arrived at the scene on Vandeleur Ave and entered the property to make it safe.”
The 18-year-old was found inside the house and arrested. No items were stolen.
“This would have been an alarming incident to happen at any point of time, let alone in the early hours when people are sleeping,” Miles said.
The 18-year-old is set to appear in North Shore District Court today charged with burglary.

The new par-three fifteenth hole at Royal Birkdale
Royal Birkdale is nearing completion of a host of changes in preparation for the Open in 2026
Tee and path work has been completed on the first hole
GolfLink Evolve began work on phase two in autumn 2024 (tenth green and eleventh tees
The project has included the renovation of bunkers
with Mackenzie & Ebert undertaking a historical research study prior to starting work (third hole
The second phase of renovation work at Royal Birkdale in Southport
Mackenzie & Ebert has advised on a host of changes to the 10-time Open Championship venue
including redesigning the fifth and seventh
the alteration of the existing par-five fifteenth to become the new fourteenth hole
and a completely new par-three fifteenth hole
The first phase focused on new greens – the practice putting green
“All the tees and green surrounds on these holes
where the bunkering layout has been adjusted
have been worked on as well,” said Neil Cruickshank
“This work also included additional drainage either through pipe installation or raising greens and bunkers to improve conditions for members through the winter.”
The new par-three fifteenth plays in a completely different direction to the club’s other par threes (the fourth
“The course lacked a par three where players could run the ball onto the green
so the new fifteenth is a longer par three
often played strongly downwind to a long green,” said Cruickshank
“The seventh has been shortened to 150 yards
the par threes are now set for a varied test and well equipped for major championship play and will range from 150 to 240 yards.”
The new fourteenth plays over land a fairway’s width to the right of the former par-five fifteenth
“The old green was the most undulating of all of the putting surfaces
but a high proportion of it could not be used for flag positions,” said Cruickshank
“The new green is heavily influenced by the shape of the old green
but it now has a greater variety of pin locations.”
The second phase covers the remaining holes and includes the enhancement of green surrounds
rebuilding all the tees and removing hard paths
“All the tees have been arranged so that golfers of all abilities will have a great playing experience,” said Cruickshank
“This has involved adding some new forward tees to cater for players with slower swing speeds and we have been working with Sharon Eales (soon to be elected chair of course) and Fiona Womack
recent recipients of the ‘Trailblazers’ award from Women in Golf
for their pioneering analysis of how women play the game and how much better their enjoyment would be if courses were set up more thoughtfully.”
Contractor GolfLink Evolve completed the first phase between autumn 2023 and spring 2024 and the second phase in the same timeframe a year later
All work is set to be finished and grown in for the club to host the Open in 2026
Royal Birkdale remains a members’ club
and the recent changes were driven by the members themselves,” said architect Tom Mackenzie
“The club created a detailed and well-considered brief of the aspects that they wished us to consider
We began our work as we always do with a thorough historical research study that highlighted how much the bunker style had altered over the decades from huge
ornate bunkers to small revetted pot bunkers
It also showed that the current twelfth hole was built in the 1960s to replace the par-three seventeenth
which was abandoned because it made hosting the major championships so difficult
“The proposals were driven by the member’s brief
We knew that the proposals would seem radical
but the club asked us to look closely at the direction of the par threes as the addition of the twelfth had left three par-three holes of similar length playing in the same direction
They also wanted to improve the members’ practice facilities – our layout adjustments resulted from looking at how to address these requirements from the club.”

A biosecurity operation is in progress in the suburb of Birkdale
following the discovery of a single male Oriental fruit fly in a surveillance trap in a suburban backyard
Biosecurity New Zealand Commissioner North
confirmed the detection and emphasized the urgency of the response
"This is the same species of fruit fly that we responded to in Papatoetoe recently
but it is too early to say whether the two finds are linked
Our lab will do further DNA analysis of the fly over the coming days," Inglis stated
Biosecurity New Zealand is moving quickly to search for any other fruit flies and take measures to eradicate them
The operation will include increased trapping and inspection
with daily checks in a 200-meter zone from the original find and additional checks every three days in a second zone extending out to 1,500 meters
"The capture of a single male does not mean we have an outbreak
we need community help to prevent any possible spread," Inglis explained
legal restrictions will be placed on the movement of fruit and vegetables out of the affected area
The exact boundaries of these restrictions will be determined following an initial investigation
with detailed instructions set to be released tomorrow
residents and businesses in the suburb are urged not to take any whole fresh fruit or vegetables off their properties
Biosecurity staff will be in the area tomorrow to provide information to the community
Residents may notice increased activity as field officers conduct inspections and trapping
Officers may request access to fruit trees on private properties
but they will always present official identification and will only enter with permission
"There have been 13 incursions of different fruit fly species in Auckland and Northland since 1996
and all have been successfully eradicated thanks to the efforts of Biosecurity New Zealand
and the local communities who have stepped up to help," Inglis said
He referenced a 2019 response when fruit flies were detected in three separate suburbs over several months
noting that tracing and tracking continued until officials were confident the pest had been eliminated
The latest find highlights the importance and effectiveness of Biosecurity New Zealand's surveillance trapping network
which consists of nearly 8,000 traps set across the country and checked regularly
and respond quickly and effectively," Inglis stated
Residents who suspect they have found an Oriental fruit fly are urged to photograph it
and immediately report the sighting to Biosecurity New Zealand by calling the Pest and Diseases Hotline at +64 0800 80 99 66

Proposals for a new licensed bar and cafe to replace a former restaurant in Birkdale Village in Southport have won planning permission
Platform will now be able to open in the former Bombay Blussi premises at 45-27 Weld Road
after Sefton Council’s Planning department approved the plans
The new venture will see the creation of eight new jobs (five full time and three part time) as well as a new addition to the vibrant Village
The planning application was submitted by VIP Birkdale LTD
seeking a change of use from a restaurant to a licensed bar and cafe
The venture would use both the ground floor and first floor of 45/47 Weld Road along with additional outside seating
Previous tenants ‘Bombay Blussi’ used the space as a restaurant on the top floor and a small bar on the lower level area to welcome customers with additional seating outside
The proposed opening hours would be 7am – 1pm Monday to Saturday and 9am-11pm on Sundays and bank holidays
The application said: “The bar will stay open later however the site is located in the heart of Birkdale Village
“As the space was already providing food and drink in its former use
the impact on the local amenity will not be harmful and will not result in unacceptable groupings of similar uses
“The proposal improves the view of the site from Weld Road through the use of planters
“Planters will provide the street trees for green views of the site and increase the green views within the conservation area
“The unmaintained rear of the building will be improved by the proposed site plans
improving the characteristics of the local area
“The materiality of the site has been used to inform the materiality and style of the proposed new elements of the building such as timber planters
“No extensions have been proposed to the building to ensure it retains its character
“Internal alterations and the addition of benches and planters have all been designed to ensure they are in keeping with the aesthetic of the local conservation area.”
A Sefton Council report said: “The use of the ground and first-floor as a bar / cafe is appropriate for this Local Centre location and will add to its viability and vitality and will not
as confirmed by the Council’s conservation officers
give rise to any detrimental impacts to the character and appearance of the Birkdale Village Conservation Area.”

(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The new owners of Birkdale Village show they’ve been listening to neighbors’ concerns in the latest proposal to expand the mixed-use development.
Among concerns for the busy shopping and residential area has long been regarding parking
The proposed rezoning would include 518 new spaces
mostly courtesy of new parking decks that would replace two of the four current ones.
The town’s land-use plan requires 1,959 total spaces given the rezoning
but the new-look development would have more than 2,400
Jamestown officials hope the 100-foot-tall commercial tower — knocked down from 115 — will have “Class A” office space
Also new to the area is the proposed upscale hotel
Jamestown’s Francis Bohn hopes to have a brand similar to Marriott’s Autograph collection
The Grand Bohemian in Uptown Charlotte is among those.
“It’s really catered around a specific location,” she said
It would be a highlight of a local chocolatier
and you would get a chocolate on your bed at the end of the night.”
All of the new development would be on the southern end of the Birkdale property
The apartments would be built where the Dick’s Sporting Goods is currently
and office space would fill space occupied by Barnes & Noble
But town officials noted that the stores’ leases are ending in a few years and those businesses are seeking smaller footprints.
The rezoning is from Highway Commercial Conditional District to Highway Commercial Conditional District for commercial
In addition to parking solutions within the development
Bohn already offered mitigation options for the adjacent Greens at Birkdale neighborhood
She said Jamestown will not add more parking if the project is denied.
Huntersville residents have recently shown resistance to new hotels in general.
NAP led wholesale changes to its tenants since it took over Birkdale in 2020, including adding more shops and amenities to what is now called the Grove. The developers noted that a hotel, multi-family and office were in the original master plans when Birkdale was planned in 1999.
Commissioner Edwin Quarles mentioned how Lake Norman-area residents have been against changes to Birkdale, especially when it comes to sacrificing parking spaces. But that a project like this must fit with the town’s growth plan.
“Birkdale Village is attractive and it’s vibrant,” he said. “That’s why it’s so busy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For the Christmas tree lighting, people park at Hickory Tavern and walk to Birkdale Village. … Progress stops for no man, no person, no town, and we have to do the right thing.”
N.C. Department of Transportation is already scheduled to widen Sam Furr Road (N.C. 73) through Huntersville, a project that is slated to begin construction in 2026. Bohm said no further traffic-related changes were needed from the proposed project. The firm also has agreed to fund a greenway pedestrian bridge over Sam Furr.
No date to vote on the project was provided. If approved, Jamestown would start construction in late 2027.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — More than 30 people tried swaying town leaders’ decisions on new development in Birkdale Village.
While most town commissioners voted for the proposed plan, neighbors still left feeling unheard — even after representatives from Birkdale’s management firm answered their concerns during Tuesday night’s meeting.
“I was just on Sam Furr Road today… It’s packed,” one woman said.
“So I ask if we already have pedestrian-friendly hotels approved for the area serving visitors without adding congestion in or parking string in Birkdale Village. Why approve another hotel that disrupts local businesses and adds unnecessary traffic to the area?” another man said.
Huntersville neighbors will soon see new construction in Birkdale Village bringing a hotel, office building, new parking decks, and multi-family housing. But people in the community have mixed feelings about it, with many hoping to keep Huntersville’s small-town feel.
David Krug owns buildings along the road where the development will be, he – like many who visit the iconic mixed-use village — is concerned about parking.
“We’re totally dependent upon the parking that Birkdale built. We paid for it,” he said. “We paid for it and the purchase price of the land, and we pay for it in community maintenance charges and then they’re going to take it away. You know, it’s just totally unfair. It’s unreasonable.”
Representatives from the Jamestown Real Estate Management Firm say the original vision for Birkdale Village was planned in 1999. It then included plans for a hotel, multifamily, and office.
They say this rezoning is the next step in achieving that vision.
“I am excited for my business,” one businesswoman said in support of the proposal.
“Partners who travel from a corporate office will have a boutique hotel experience here in town and they won’t fever our South Park location to where they have to have the full-service hotel experience there. They’ll be able to bring their business here.”
After nearly two hours of public comment, town board members asked for more reassurance from the developers about parking, hotel usage, and other concerns — before taking their vote.
“For this board to ignore the next phase in its evolution would simply be short-sighted,” said Commissioner Nick Walsh. “Change is hard for some people. I get that this board has shown that it has the vision to do the right thing and approval.”
Commissioner Amanda Dumas was the lone dissenting vote.
“Tonight, the Town of Huntersville voted in favor of progress, aligned with its 2040 Comprehensive Plan,” said Jamestown Director of Development and Construction Frances Bohn. “We commend the town board for its forward-looking leadership and are grateful for the opportunity to continue investing in Huntersville.”
Commissioners negotiated with the developer to aid with building a pedestrian bridge across Sam Furr to help with traffic congestion.
Leaders say Birkdale Village went from being the third-largest tax producer in 2014 to the largest producer in 2024.
Mayor Pro Tem Jennifer Hunt wanted neighbors to understand that commissioners do listen to constituents and they have listened on this proposal, but that doesn’t mean it’ll always end in agreement.
We are rolling up our sleeves to fix the pipes washed out by the Auckland Floods and Cyclone Gabrielle events in Beach Haven and Birkdale
With more than 180 issues affecting water and wastewater infrastructure across the city
we have been hard at work with our engineering and construction partners inspecting damaged sites and getting robust temporary repairs in place before winter sets in
This allows time for us to put the final touches on plans for more resilient and permanent solutions in the long term
Our asset upgrades and renewals general manager Suzanne Lucas says: “The reason we’ve taken this approach is to allow time for planning
design and construction to take place while limiting impact to customers and the environment
“To help get the heavy lifting underway – specifically to help clean up the slip behind Birkenhead College by the Rangatira Reserve in two weeks – we enlisted a walking excavator
“The spider digger will make it a lot easier and quicker for us to remove slips from difficult-to-reach cliff faces and valleys – where the bulk of these repairs need to be carried out – through its ability to overcome many terrain obstacles with minimal environmental impact.”
the flood recovery team finished temporary repairs on Rosecamp Road
restoring wastewater services to 10 properties
“We worked really hard to get this done before winter because the people in these 10 homes had been using portaloos
and we wanted to reconnect them as soon as possible,” Lucas says
“We’re really grateful for their patience while we’ve planned and carried out this complex work.”
The repairs also removed the need for a generator and pumps running a temporary bypass that had served an additional 25 properties
“Since road access for heavy equipment to these Rosecamp Road properties was not possible
we had to bring in the material and equipment we needed – including a digger – by barge via Charcoal Bay Beach,” Lucas says
our recovery team got straight to work securing the area to avoid further slips
Works were further complicated by ongoing rain causing the ground to turn to mush
“The works were necessary to reconnect a pipe broken across a large slip spanning two properties back to the local wastewater network
The team installed a temporary pipe bridge to replace the pipeline that had failed and a retaining wall to protect an exposed pipeline to the neighbouring property.”
Problem solving and innovative ways of working has been required for some of the sites that experienced significant issues
due to accessibility limitations and work complexity
Recently we even transported a small digger by helicopter to repair slips that had damaged the Upper Nihotupu Dam raw watermain
Lucas is amazed by the resilience of customers affected by recent weather events and slips
most locals have been patient while we carry out investigation works to assess the damage to deliver a more permanent solution for the community
“We can’t thank everyone enough for sticking by us while we work to repair the damage to our network

(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Huntersville Planning Board grilled the Birkdale Village management team for hours about the development’s parking plans
then ultimately voted to recommend denial of the latest proposed additions
Members mentioned how both Huntersville and the north Mecklenburg area overall continue to grow at a fast rate
73 (Sam Furr Road) is slated to be widened through town
where the development’s two main entrances are located
One member said she doesn’t visit Birkdale anymore because of trouble finding parking
there were concerns regarding where construction equipment for this project would be staged
Jamestown representative Francis Bohn said with Barnes & Noble planning to leave once their lease ends
Another member questioned whether these changes actually fit Birkdale’s aura as an iconic mixed-use development
“I don’t see anything with office space that feels like a village
I’m not sure this is protecting the unique character,” he said
noting the town’s language in the 2040 Community Plan
Most seemed excited about the upscale hotel
and that it would serve the the many international companies that have North American headquarters in town
But the vote had to be about the overall proposal
“This isn’t a perfect proposal
but there’s enough value that it should be considered,” a member who voted to approve it said
The Huntersville Board of Commissioners will vote on the rezoning at a date to be determined

ATLANTA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — After undergoing sweeping changes over the last few years
Huntersville’s Birkdale Village is once again getting new owners
The Atlanta-based subsidiary of North American Properties is being acquired by global real estate firm Jamestown in a $2 billion deal
The deal includes nine properties in six states
including Birkdale and several in the Atlanta metro
NAP acquired Huntersville’s mixed-use icon in November 2020
and the developer has made significant tenant changes over the last four years
This has centered around community events and bringing in more upscale food and beverage businesses
taking the place of retail and smaller establishments.
which reports having a portfolio of $11.7 billion
employs approximately 500 people worldwide with 12 global offices
including headquarters in Atlanta and Cologne. The company owns two North Carolina properties
“Jamestown’s North Star is to create inspiring places that serve as the foundation of community life and reinforce a sense of place and belonging
while generating value for investors,” said Michael Phillips
“Their expertise around suburban placemaking is a great complement for our urban placemaking expertise
as well as our grocery-anchored shopping center business.”
The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2024
when the NAP subsidiary and its assets will move under the Jamestown name
who is the managing partner of the Atlanta firm
will join Jamestown’s executive team.
“Joining Jamestown represents an exciting new chapter,” said Perry
“We look forward to continuing to create dynamic
community-focused destinations and unlocking new value creation opportunities as part of Jamestown’s global platform.”
Among the most stark physical changes at Birkdale have been to the green space in the middle of Birkdale Commons Parkway
The developers removed many of the trees at The Grove
as well as smaller shops along the stretch; Charlotte-based Suffolk Punch Brewery is opening a location there.
Despite the movie industry’s shakeup coming out of the pandemic
Birkdale’s movie theater has remained
And NAP maintained the annual Fourth of July bike parade and “wet-down” from the Huntersville Fire Department
Jamestown says an affiliate will make an investment into NAP’s portfolio of six properties
Cincinnati-based North American Properties will continue to own and operate real estate through its other affiliates.

Charlotte, NC (RestaurantNews.com) eeZ, the sister concept to The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar, is celebrating a big milestone this month: 20 years of serving great sushi and Asian cuisine in the Lake Norman area. A longtime anchor at Birkdale Village
which was a quicker serve concept that used pre-packaged sauces
Zyng would not have lasted at Birkdale Village because it was not what their guests wanted
Springate was forced to quickly change the concept into a restaurant that better fit the market…and eeZ was born
I wanted to move the concept within a few weeks to an independent scratch kitchen with fresh ingredients that highlighted the best Asian dishes
I was able to work quickly with a friend that ran a small marketing group who presented about twenty names they felt best captured energy and something different
I immediately knew that was the name I wanted to go with and felt it fit the brand that was to come
Originally it was known as eeZ Fusion and Sushi
but we shortened the name to simply eeZ after undergoing a complete renovation in August of 2022.”
Springate believes it is because the team strives to listen to their guests and believes each guest should have a great experience
Product quality and freshness has never wavered over the years; the consistent commitment to quality and a reputation for being allergy friendly have also contributed to the brand’s success
the eeZ menu is much more refined and true to its Thai Asian roots
sashimi and creative stir fry and noodle dishes all on the menu
Paired with handcrafted cocktails from Assistant General Manager and resident bar guru Ryan Selman
the unique flavors of these dishes come right through
In 2024 an Omakase menu served solely at the sushi bar was added to the mix
The multi-course menu features a selection of seafood dishes
curated by Head Chef Son Nguyen and Master Sushi Chef Rifali Almunir
who have been overseeing the sushi program for well over a decade
eeZ will be celebrating their 20 year anniversary from open to close on Monday

In a 5-1 vote, Huntersville leaders gave the green light to a major overhaul of Birkdale Village
The $200 million project will bring a new office tower
Two parking structures are planned to handle cars
One will be seven stories tall with 537 spaces
while the other will be four stories with 291 spots
The developer will put $5 million toward traffic improvements
The change represents a shift from pure retail to mixed-use development
A modern office building will offer 175,000 square feet of space
The old Dick's location will become a six-story building mixing apartments and shops
Not everyone supports the plan. "It's just disastrous. Not only lose the parking for my tenants and their employees. But I lose accessibility, and I lose visibility. It'll destroy my tenant's business,” resident David Krug told WSOC-TV
the updated complex is expected to add $200,000 yearly to local tax revenue
while new residents and workers could spend an additional $15 million in the area
The approval comes after a long fight for rezoning
Even though the Planning Board voted against it weeks earlier
this smaller version got approved whereas a larger plan failed in 2023
The first phase will focus on demolition and parking
Local business organizations strongly support the updates
The project aligns with Huntersville's 2040 growth plan
A new hotel will welcome guests near the Sam Furr Road entrance to the complex
