It marked the end of the project traversing seven suburbs. The new pipeline, 91cm in diameter, runs from Titirangi reservoirs to Gillies Ave in Epsom, replacing an old pipe, dating back to the 1940s, that was nearing the end of its operational life. The water main was expected to accommodate population growth and more housing, said the agency's water head, Sharon Danks. "To start with, it will carry on average 30 million litres of water a day – water that originated in the western dams and we've treated at our Huia Water Treatment Plant. But we've future-proofed the Huia 1 pipeline to accommodate population growth," Danks said. Capital delivery general manager Suzanne Lucas said the project would cost approximately $115 million – nearly $30 million less than the approved budget. “We found efficiencies by involving our contractor in the planning and design of the later stages of the project, and by working closely with Auckland Transport to optimise our traffic management arrangements," she said. The installation was conducted in stages throughout the suburbs, with sections already in service before today's completion. "We recognise this project was disruptive to communities and commuters along the route, and we'd really like to thank everyone for their patience while we built this critical watermain," Lucas said. The Huia 1 project is part of Watercare's recently announced 10-year plan, which allocates about half of the $13.8 billion investment planned for the next decade on projects that replace or upgrade existing infrastructure. Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy "They're just a negotiating point I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point "What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part 'I'm going to negotiate case by case'." Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs." Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing" particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented "I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions" "I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view but I don't think we should panic either and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said "There are growing markets around the world It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us." Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs middle-income consumers or consumers in America do because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade." Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said Hanson was assigned the case in late February and he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account obituaries and marriage licenses from that region they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg including date of birth and social security number Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address "I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say ‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.” Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found “I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything any phone numbers of family members back here," he said "Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.” Hawke's Bay iwi Ngāti Kahungunu has been unsuccessful in its bid to buy back the mountain Kahurānaki but the iwi says its connection to the land will always remain Kahurānaki Station - a 1156 hectare sheep and beef farm south of Havelock North which includes the peak of the mountain - came up for sale earlier this year and the iwi launched a fundraising campaign to buy it The campaign to bring the Kahurānaki back into Māori ownership was called He Maunga Ka Taea and included a 10-day hīkoi from Māhia to Kahurānaki It raised more than $95,000 on crowd funding platform koha.kiwi Hastings-based post-settlement governance entity Tamatea Pōkai Whenua Trust submitted a tender on behalf of the iwi Chairman Pōhatu Paku said the trust was the only local entity to tender for the Station and they were saddened and disappointed by the outcome The trust had approached the tender on the basis it was presented Paku acknowledged the young and emerging iwi members who had generated the groundswell of support for the tender and for the longer term status of the mountain ki tēnā o tātau e titikaha nei ki tēnei kaupapa I just want to acknowledge and mihi to everybody that has connected with this kaupapa Paku said the trust would be engaging with the station's new owners at an appropriate time to convey the iwi's history and also set out their aspirations "The continuation of the protection of our wāhi tapu (sacred sites) is significantly important to us Continued access to the mountain would also be a high priority "The previous owners were quite open for Kura for people running kaupapa and also those that wished to ascend the maunga they allowed that they identified that it was culturally significant to us all." Paku said Tamatea Pōkai Whenua will need to foster the groundswell of support and leadership that the He Maunga Ka Taea campaign had generated "The whakapapa connections and taonga that is Kahurānaki maunga remain our greatest advantage is that we live in perpetuity and our maunga and our tīpuna live with us and they continue to be ours "And like all of our tūtohu whenua (landmarks) our maunga carries our traditions and our identity and our histories and we remain uncompromising to act in the best interests of our tūtohu whenua both for this generation and for future generations." “REBUILD AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!” — the notorious penitentiary on an island in San Francisco Bay that last held inmates more than 60 years ago Even as the Bureau of Prisons struggles with short staffing chronic violence and crumbling infrastructure at its current facilities Trump is counting on the agency to fulfill his vision of rebooting the infamously inescapable prison known in movies and pop culture as The Rock Trump declared in a social media post that a “substantially enlarged and rebuilt” Alcatraz will house the nation’s “most ruthless and violent Offenders” Newly appointed Bureau of Prisons Director William K Marshall III said that the agency “will vigorously pursue all avenues to support and implement the President’s agenda” and that he has ordered “an immediate assessment to determine our needs and the next steps” We look forward to restoring this powerful symbol of law and justice,” Marshall said in a statement “We will be actively working with our law enforcement and other federal partners to reinstate this very important mission.” an 8.9-hectare spit of land with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline was once the crown jewel of the federal prison system and home to some of the nation’s most notorious criminals including gangsters Al Capone and George Machine Gun Kelly But skyrocketing repair and supply costs compelled the Justice Department to close the prison in 1963 and the Bureau of Prisons has long since replaced Alcatraz with modern penitentiaries including a maximum-security prison in Florence The former and perhaps future penitentiary is now a popular tourist attraction and a national historic landmark It’s controlled by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area meaning the Bureau of Prisons could be in for an interagency tug of war if it tries to wrest away control of the island Trump’s Alcatraz directive is yet another challenge for the Bureau of Prisons as it struggles to fix lingering problems while responding to the president’s priorities on incarceration and immigrant detention includes taking in thousands of immigration detainees under an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security The problems at the Bureau of Prisons transcend administrations and facilities An ongoing Associated Press investigation has uncovered deep previously unreported flaws within the Bureau of Prisons over the last few years including widespread criminal activity by employees and severe understaffing that has hampered responses to emergencies then-President Joe Biden signed a law strengthening oversight of the agency It remains the Justice Department’s largest agency 155,000 inmates and an annual budget of about US$8 billion (NZ$13.4 some workers and the continued use of a policy known as augmentation teachers and other workers are pressed into duty to guard inmates A Bureau of Prisons official told Congress at a hearing in One Woolworths worker whose role was being disestablished said some experienced butchers and bakers would leave rather than take a pay cut "We're losing tons of experience in these positions and I think customers will inevitably notice the difference in our products." The union wanted Woolworths to protect the pay and conditions for staff in roles being disestablished Woolworths said the new model would mean clearer leadership pathways "We have heard a lot of useful and considered feedback from our team and Workers First Union and we've taken this on board - making changes like the introduction of a new tier of store leadership ensuring we have the right number of leaders in our stores supporting our team and customers at peak times and ensuring leadership cover for leave and absences "We'll continue to learn and adjust as we pilot the new operating model and we'll include those findings in our consultation approach." A spokesperson said from May the new model would be piloted in the upper North Island supermarkets "Our priority now is working with our team to support them to transition into the new roles that will be created we'll be investing $6.6 million in training and upskilling team members." He said Woolworths had also told staff that Blockhouse Bay and Māngere Mall stores would not be included because they were to close "The leases for both of these stores end later this year and we've made the difficult decision not to renew our leases in these locations This is driven by declining customer demand locally and considering the ongoing tough economic environment we believe the most responsible path forward is to consolidate in these areas "We're sharing this news with our Blockhouse Bay and Māngere Mall teams well ahead of the stores closing to make sure our teams understand all of their options for continuing their careers with us through redeployment in nearby stores "We know this will be disappointing news for our local customers and team Our Blockhouse Bay store will be open until November and our Māngere Mall store will be open until September Over the coming months we'll be working closely with each of our team members to find suitable new roles wherever we can and ensure a smooth transition." The supermarket chain said there was a technical problem with its electronic shelf labels the prime minister said he would "worry about that down the road" Woolworths is consulting with staff on proposed changes to its store operating model The local head of the supermarket giant is leaving the company after four years Business RSS Follow RNZ News Auckland CityPrice By Negotiation321111m²134m²Ready to Sell - Vendor Says Bring All Offers! If you're searching for contemporary comfort and a location that ticks all the boxes look no further than this stunning near new home in the heart of Blockhouse Bay Featuring 3 spacious bedrooms and 2.5 beautifully appointed bathrooms this home offers the ultimate in modern family living The open-plan living area flows into a sleek • 3 Bedrooms - Light-filled and generous in size • 2.5 Bathrooms - Including a convenient guest powder room on the ground floor • Internal Access Garage - Secure parking and storage with ease • Zoned for Blockhouse Bay Intermediate and Lynfield College - Top school zones for growing families this is your chance to secure a near-new home in a prime location Don't miss this incredible opportunity - contact us today to book a viewing Download property documents here; https://vltre.co/RJiRL5 based on a borrower’s individual credit assessment.Canstar's Most Awarded Personal LoanGet a renovation loan up to $70K and bring your vision to life we can approve your home improvement loan quickly and get your renovation started Necessary work at Blockhouse Bay Library to repair the roof and increase the usable space will begin in October The work will take around nine months to complete and the library will be temporarily closed while it takes place Services will be available at libraries in surrounding areas – Avondale and New Lynn libraries Staff from Blockhouse Bay Library will be relocated to Avondale and New Lynn libraries while the work is completed to support an increase in visitors Whau Local Board Chair Kay Thomas says that the works will be temporary pain for the long-term gain of a more resilient building “While it’s unfortunate the library will be temporarily closed it is important that we go ahead with the repair of the roof “Doing these works now will protect the building against any further extreme weather events.”  the building has served the community well damage sustained during the 2023 Auckland Anniversary weekend floods has affected the use and weather tightness of the building rainwater is entering the building through the internal courtyard during heavy rainfall The project will install a new wide gutter between the two main roofs which will include changes to the internal courtyard and library entrance the internal courtyard will be included as part of the internal building creating more space for library users and other facilities in the building The locations of all West Auckland libraries can be found here Sign up for the Whau Local Board E-news to get the latest news and events direct to your inbox each month, and follow us on Facebook. Hickling noted that these upgrades would not have been possible without Thompson's donation "Auckland Council and Haumaru Housing are grateful to Mr R B Thompson and the legacy he and his wife have left for older people in Auckland." Property lawyer Joanna Pidgeon told RNZ the land could only have been sold if the proceeds were used for pensioner housing "It's the council's responsibility to follow the terms of the trust and they can't change that without a court order or the attorney-general's approval of the change in purpose the funds can be traced to ensure they have been applied as per the donor's original intention for the land." The money from Thompson's donated land to Haumaru Housing's residential villages could not have come at a better time Auckland councillor Richard Hills said the project recently faced a funding cut of about $6m per year Haumaru Housing is now unable to take on additional tenants when legacy units become available." Hills said the cut was done for any particular reason "This will mean more empty senior housing units as there will be extremely limited budget to refit and upgrade existing ones as tenants leave He claimed Haumaru Housing received only three days' notice of the cuts the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said Hills' comments did not accurately reflect the ministry's recent policy change "HUD has not 'cut' subsidies to Haumaru Housing or other Community Housing Providers (CHPs)," a spokesperson said "We have capped the number of redirects at current levels so the income flow from Income-Related Rent Subsidies (IRRS) for CHPs like Haumaru Housing remains the same as it currently is." The IRRS is paid by HUD to social housing landlords to cover the gap between what tenants pay and the market rent a housing provider may turn a private rental into a social house and receive the subsidy HUD only allowed new redirects in exceptional cases to focus on building more new social houses "CHPs can replace tenants as needed but cannot increase the overall number of redirects," the HUD spokesperson said "There will be no displacement of existing social housing tenants due to this change." Entomologist Stephen Thorpe was seen in a struggle outside a tennis club before being found with stab wounds New Zealand RSS An Auckland school is running a blitz on children who are late for class because they've slept in An Auckland intermediate is cracking down on tardy students launching a “blitz” on families whose children are regularly late for school Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School says it marked nearly 10% of its students - or 85 children - late to school on a single day last week In a post on the school’s public Facebook page parents and students were warned there would be a crackdown on lateness and the families of those who were regularly late would be contacted by school leaders “The most concerning reason is ‘slept in’,” the school wrote “We will be running a blitz on this over the next few weeks and working with those students and families who are consistently late for this reason.” Lateness impacted not only the student but also the class and teachers “Being just 10 minutes late every day adds up to an hour a week of lost learning Over a year this adds up to one week of school missed in a year!” The post warned that being late for class meant important instructions could be missed and children may feel uncomfortable and on the outer with peers Students were reminded to arrive on time - at least five minutes before the 8.30am bell The school told the Herald it was too early to tell if the message - posted Monday - had had a positive effect and declined to comment further on the planned crackdown Ministry of Education spokesman Sean Teddy said schools develop their own policies on what constitutes lateness and ministry guidance suggests marking students who are more than 10 minutes late with an L code Teddy said the code would help the school monitor and respond to patterns of lateness Registered psychologist Dan Ford told the Herald the best way for parents to help young people get to school on time was to make sure they got up at the same time every morning - even on the weekend Ford - clinical director of The Better Sleep Clinic in Auckland - said young people needed consistency to get into good sleep habits “Shifts in the body clock happen in puberty so we often see .. difficulties falling asleep from 10-11 years of age,” Ford said it’s recommended young people need nine-11 hours of sleep each night Even if a young person had a late night it was still important to get up at the same time the next day - even if getting through the day was a bit tougher “Waking time is a lot more important than what time they go to sleep.” Ford said if an intermediate school student needed to get up at 7am to be at school on time Older teens might go to bed later but it was still important to wake up at the same time each morning Getting out into daylight as soon as possible in the morning and getting around 16 hours of daytime activity was also important Ford compared sleep to hunger and said just like working up an appetite through being active during daylight hours physical activity and waking at the same time each day prepared the body for sleep He also recommended giving a bedtime - even for older teens “There might be some resistance to this but the emotional upset from being given a bedtime is not as bad in the long term as the upset from having poor sleep.” Avoiding screens when in bed was also important “Teen eyes are very sensitive and the messages they get sent through their phones means they are constantly being alerted to something “It’s addictive and has an alerting effect on the brain which affects sleep.” Having a central charging port in the home that couldn’t be accessed after bedtime was also a good strategy OPINION: If our best and brightest aren’t staying, our international reputation suffers. Police have revealed a “violent struggle” took place between a scientist and his attacker in a tennis club car park stabbing They said this morning they are hunting Stephen Thorpe’s attacker who could have been stained with blood after the struggle Friends, students and colleagues are paying tribute to Thorpe, who was killed on Saturday morning at the Blockhouse Bay Tennis Club Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said there was a “large amount of blood” at the scene and some of that would have transferred to the killer likely in an agitated state and likely with some blood on him ”Someone will know who this person is and I challenge them to do the right thing and come forward.” Baldwin said a club member saw the victim earlier in the morning when the scientist had passed his laptop to him for safekeeping before he walked into the bush about 11.30am to look for insects Thorpe was a highly regarded entomologist in his early 50s with a passion for seeking out and identifying bugs and plants He worked seven days a week out of the Whau River Catchment Trust’s offices at the club Baldwin said after the victim went outside ”The staff member witnessed the victim in a violent struggle and went to get a phone to call for help.” and when he returned outside the victim was alone on the steps and his attacker had fled Thorpe had been stabbed multiple times before dying outside the club on Rathlin St the victim had succumbed to his injuries which are consistent with stab wounds,” Baldwin said He said the offender fled towards the car park on Rathlin St and it was not clear if he left on foot or in a vehicle Police have been hunting for the offender Police are also stepping up reassurance patrolling in the area “I know this event has rocked the local community and membership at the tennis club,” Baldwin said ”Our investigation team is highly motivated and are working hard to bring some answers and to hold the person responsible to account.” Baldwin said they wanted to speak to anyone on Rathlin St Exminster Stand and Terry St who saw “anything suspicious” from 11.30am onwards He urged the community to be vigilant and to “pay attention” while the man was still at large Baldwin acknowledges the public who have made contact with police so far ”One piece of information could be crucial in advancing this investigation so no matter how small it might be our team needs to hear from you.” Thorpe was single and had no children – his only known family was an elderly father in Queensland Meanwhile, those who have benefitted from his knowledge have paid tribute to his generosity and his work ethic – clearly visible in his more than 28,000 entries in iNaturalist an online app where people share biodiversity observations The scientist had at least nine new species of bugs named after him Thorpe also contributed some 12,000 insect specimens to Auckland Museum where he worked mainly as a volunteer throughout the 2000s “He had a prodigious memory particularly for all the scientific literature about New Zealand beetles,” said John Early not just for its horrific circumstances but also that his valuable contribution to New Zealand entomology is now ended.” president of the Auckland branch of the Entomological Society of New Zealand said he was shocked to hear of Thorpe’s death ”The main thing for the entomological community now and in the future is that we’ve lost a person who was able to identify so many different species of insects and other arthropods as well.” His contribution to the iNaturalist website was “massive” Seldon said word of the tragedy had spread among the entomology community quickly over the weekend and he expected it would be discussed at the society’s national conference in Christchurch this week Entomological Society of New Zealand president Tara Murray said her thoughts went out to Thorpe’s family “I have sent out many messages over the years when members of our community have passed away but there are simply no words to describe such a senseless tragedy.” University of Auckland entomologist professor Jacqueline Beggs said she was still processing the news it’s just hard to comprehend that he’s gone.” Thorpe worked in her laboratory at the university’s School of Biological Sciences for around a decade and she remembered him as a “walking encyclopedia” who was generous in sharing his knowledge with students “He was phenomenal in his ability to identify species – but more than that to ping the really cool and interesting things about them,” she said “Many of the techniques we use for collecting insects will bring up a vast array of different individuals – and within those hundreds he had an uncanny ability to spot the most unusual and important ones.” Prominent citizen scientist and Wikimedian Siobhan Leachman was similarly devastated at the news “I think our community has lost a really important member,” she said noting Thorpe was a highly regarded entomologist here and abroad “He had this depth of knowledge – and he was so generous with sharing that knowledge in the iNaturalist community in particular.” and also had a species named after himself Gary Andrew from the Whau River Catchment Trust sat every day next to Thorpe, who worked out of the trust’s offices though he was not employed there. Andrew described the scientist as a “small, slightly built, well-spoken, educated, gentle guy who would just never hurt a fly. It just felt incredibly sad that something has happened like this. It’s so pointless”. Tributes posted online to his account on the app remember his kind, helpful nature, “incredible wisdom” and passion for entomology. “He was so dedicated and knowledgeable. iNat has certainly lost one of its greats! Rest in Peace mate.“ Thorpe’s death was “incredibly sad”, another said, adding that Thorpe had made an “immeasurable contribution to entomology and natural science in NZ. Grateful for the help he gave me as a masters student”. Another said Thorpe had shared his wisdom with many “iNaturalist youngsters”. “You were someone we looked up to, hoping that one day we would know as much about the natural world as you. You will be missed.” ”Always happy and always able to help with identifications, always pointing towards the relevant literature. Never leaving a specimen behind! Now you are leaving us behind…I will miss you.” One devastated friend said on social media she became concerned for Thorpe after he didn’t post his usual “countless” daily observations on iNaturalist. After a sleepless night, she had called police, who confirmed her friend was the victim. Ken Lau, who lives opposite the tennis club, said the incident happened in front of other club members. “The court was busy – it’s a vibrant, busy place on a Saturday. People are playing tennis, bowling, biking. There would have been lots of witnesses.” The Herald asked police this morning for any updates including whether there were any concerns about public safety. Police said they had no updates to share, but yesterday said they were formally identifying the man and would be going door to door looking for more information.
