Auckland is getting a new regional park with one of the country’s largest collections of kauri trees after a $10 million gift from an influential family
More than five and a half hectares of land in Greenhithe
also a sanctuary for other rare tree specimens
will be protected as a regional park in perpetuity
The Kyle Rd site has a forest grown from the seed of Tāne Mahuta
and is also home to a genetic replica of the famous kauri
It has been gifted to the people of Auckland by philanthropist Rosemary Platt
the widow of renowned nurseryman Graeme Platt
He is credited with convincing generations of gardeners to plant natives and was a supplier for the Auckland Botanic Gardens
Mayor Wayne Brown said he was “delighted to be able to accept this impressive ..
Brown said: “This is an overwhelmingly remarkable gift to the city
We will honour accordingly the vision and meticulous work Mrs Platt and Mr Platt have put into it since they bought it back in 1983.”
Rosemary Platt said her late husband would be “thrilled that his passion for ancient trees ..
will be enjoyed by our community as they stroll amongst these and appreciate their rich history”
The land has a series of open spaces connected together around a pond
It also has a three-bedroom home and a workshed
Both are made from exotic timbers and have heritage bricks salvaged from His Majesty’s Theatre on Queen St
The site will be developed in line with the Auckland Botanic Gardens Management Plan
signage and toilets needed before it can open to the public at an unspecified time
The council will work with local iwi Te Kawerau ā Maki and Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei on the project
Both iwi have historical connections to the area
with Tauhinu Pā once standing nearby overlooking Oruamo
The Platts' connection to the area began when they opened Platts Native Plant Nursery in Albany in 1974
It quickly became the most popular supplier of quality native plants
Graeme Platt sourced a selection of speciality trees from countries once part of ancient continent Gondwana
It now has more than 1000 mature trees from New Zealand

Discount online retailer Temu has launched an internal investigation after a cheap phone charger sparked a house fire on Auckland's North Shore that significantly damaged a family home
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said the cable being used to recharge a phone and had been placed on soft material in a Greenhithe house when it overheated and caught fire on Saturday
Five fire trucks attended the blaze at the three-storey house around 9.30pm and evacuated all occupants safely
A Temu spokesperson told the Herald they were "deeply concerned" about the accident and "relieved that Mr [Layne] Sparks and his family are safe and unharmed"
The spokesperson said while they have not yet received the purchase details needed to verify which product caused the blaze
Temu has proactively initiated an internal investigation
"Our teams are carefully reviewing product listings and seller records related to the USB cables mentioned in the news
According to the fire and emergency department's findings reported in the news
the fire may have involved the use of a cable to recharge a phone while it was placed on a soft surface," the spokesperson said
"We encourage all users to follow their recommendation to recharge devices on hard
We urge Mr Sparks to contact us directly so we can investigate the specific product more thoroughly and keep him updated on our progress
Temu remains committed to acting with transparency and responsibility as we address this matter."
flashing cord" bought from the Chinese-owned online retailer to charge her phone and left it between their bed and a pillow to protect it from their pet rabbit
Sparks said his partner had taken a sleeping pill which hadn't worked
his partner heard the smoke alarm go off and rushed back inside to check on their 1-year-old baby
went straight [in] and grabbed our baby and went outside."
Sparks says he was gaming in the downstairs garage when his partner alerted him to the fire
and he ran to the top floor thinking she had gone further into the house
"[I opened] that door and just saw pitch black
within a second I was just covered in it."
The family and their pet rabbit escaped and fire crews from Albany and Greenhithe arrived to put out the blaze
Sparks said two walls would have to be replaced and the bedroom was completely burned out
while the bathroom was left "black with smoke"
The top floor will "need to be redone" and the second floor sustained significant water damage
Sparks said their landlord had house insurance but they did not have contents insurance
meaning they would have to replace everything in their bedroom
The family have moved out while the clean-up and repair process is being undertaken and have started a Givealittle to help cover costs
"I think the main thing to take away from this is: Don't use cheap charging cables," Sparks said
"If they're not really that safe or from an approved manufacturer
then you're just risking something like this happening."
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they recommend device chargers only be operated on hard surfaces to reduce fire risk

The minister says she's changed her processes after admitting processes were 'untidy'.
In an extraordinary act of generosity, Auckland philanthropist Rosemary Platt has gifted 5.63 hectares (approximately 14 acres) of ecologically significant land to the people of Tāmaki Makaurau.
In exchange for this gift, Auckland Council has committed to protect the botanical site as a regional park in perpetuity so that future generations can access and enjoy its remarkable collection of trees and open space.
Mayor Wayne Brown says the newly acquired land will become an important destination in the Auckland regional parks network, once it can be opened to the public.
“This is an overwhelmingly remarkable gift to the city. I’m delighted to be able to accept this impressive Greenhithe property on behalf of Aucklanders.
“We will honour accordingly the vision and meticulous work Mrs Platt and her late husband Graeme Platt have put into it since they bought it back in 1983,” Mayor Brown says.
“Thanks to Graeme’s pioneering expertise in horticulture, this property has become an impressive sanctuary of open space and rare tree specimens that are not found anywhere else.
“We are very lucky to be gifted these treasures and to receive the honour of looking after them into the future. It is a privilege to become part of such an inspirational story,” he adds.
Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau will continue to work in partnership with Te Kawerau ā Maki and Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei on this project, given the significance of the property acquisition, the taonga species (flora and fauna) preserved within it, and its location.
The whenua in this area holds deep historical connections to both iwi, with Tauhinu Pā once standing as a key stronghold nearby, overlooking Oruamo (Hellyers Creek) and the Upper Waitematā Harbour. Named Tauhinu after the native shrub that grew abundantly here, it was an important strategic defence and settlement site over hundreds of years.
The Platt family connection to the site stems backs to 1974, when Graeme and Rosemary opened Platts native plant nursery in Albany. The nursery quickly became the most popular supplier of quality native plants, and the couple became recognised as leading experts on growing native trees.
Over the next 20 years, they introduced many of the well-known native plants still popular in gardens throughout New Zealand and supplied the Auckland Botanic Gardens with many native shrubs and trees on site that visitors enjoy today.
Mrs Platt says her late husband went to great lengths to source superior genetic stock by travelling the country. He believed in harvesting seed from the very best parent stock, personally sourcing kauri cones himself and nurturing seedlings descended directly from Tāne Mahuta, which are now flourishing in Greenhithe.
Rosemary Platt at the Greenhithe property she has gifted to Aucklanders.
After the couple had purchased the block of land in Greenhithe to set up their family home in 1983, Mr Platt set about planting an arboretum (tree collection) there, sourcing a selection of speciality trees that occur in countries that once formed the great ancient continent of Gondwana. It now features more than 1000 mature trees from countries including New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and South America.
Auckland Botanic Gardens Manager Jack Hobbs says many rare and special trees are showcased in this “absolutely remarkable collection”, including several that are threatened with extinction in their natural habitats. It is hoped to establish a volunteer programme to help care for these threatened species.
“The property also has a series of connected open spaces that are beautifully laid out around a central pond, providing a range of exciting opportunities for future use,” says Mr Hobbs.
“All of these unique qualities mean it could be developed as an excellent satellite botanic garden in the north, in keeping with the Auckland Botanic Gardens Management Plan.
“I met Graeme about 45 years ago and it is fair to say his intellect and charismatic ability to inspire others with his passion for native plants made a huge impression on me,” says Mr Hobbs.
“I regard him as one of the greatest influences on horticulture in this country, particularly through his promotion of the virtues of our native flora, and I am delighted his legacy continues with the gifting of this remarkable property.
“Rosemary is also a remarkable person, and her kindness and generosity in gifting this property is the most significant gesture I have encountered during my 50-year horticultural career,” he adds.
Rosemary Platt welcomes Councillor Christine Fletcher, Mayor Wayne Brown and Auckland Botanic Gardens Manager Jack Hobbs to the site.
Policy and Planning Committee Chair Councillor Richard Hills agrees that the land and its features provide a rare opportunity to establish a regional attraction that visitors from all over the world will eventually be able to enjoy.
“It will take time for the property to be ready for public use, but it certainly offers exciting possibilities to provide a range of education and recreation opportunities in a fast-growing area,” says Cr Hills.
In addition to its natural attractions, the Greenhithe property contains a three-bedroom house and large workshop shed. Both were built using carefully selected exotic timbers, as a high-quality sustainable alternative to native timber. The buildings also feature heritage bricks salvaged from the demolition of Auckland’s His Majesty’s Theatre in 1988.
Albany Ward Councillor John Watson says the property’s location provides those living centrally a stunning escape from the pressures of daily life, being less than 30-minutes by car from the city centre and close to the motorway.
“Having a unique open green space such as this bordering high-density housing will be a real attraction, allowing people to connect with nature in a magnificent environment,” Cr Watson says. “It is a quiet and tranquil oasis that is easily accessible to locals and other Aucklanders alike.”
Upper Harbour Local Board chair Anna Atkinson agrees that opportunities to treasure our parks and open spaces will become increasingly important as the city grows over the next 30 years.
“I can see this site bringing people of all ages together in the future, to learn more about conservation and the importance of protecting its unique features. It represents an exceptional gift towards future wellbeing,” Ms Atkinson says.
The next step will be to develop a plan for the new parkland to support its future use and enjoyment by the public.
Essential infrastructure like additional carparking, signage and toilets will be needed before the site can open to the public.
As well as gifting this magnificent property to Aucklanders, Mrs Platt recently purchased an artwork from the Auckland Botanic Gardens' Sculpture in the Gardens exhibition, to go on display at the Greenhithe site.
Moo by Jamie Pickernell is, as the name suggests, a cow that reflects the arboretum’s farming past and was one of the most popular works in this year’s Sculpture in the Gardens.
In addition, Rosemary Platt has gifted a larger-than-life sized corten steel, wood and stainless steel cow artwork, named Moo, by Jamie Pickernell to permanently go on display at the Greenhithe property.
The Platt’s gifted property has a council valuation of $10,190,000.
Friends of Auckland Botanic Gardens have committed $20,000 towards future planning, recognising its ecological significance.
The property is bordered by a Significant Ecological Area, with housing on three sides.
Two buildings on the site have beautiful exotic wood interiors and provide future opportunity for a café and education facility.
An initial council assessment recommends the site becomes a future satellite botanic garden.
Public access is not yet available to the site.
A workshop in the shed showcases a range of exotic timber.

Photo / SuppliedA modern Georgian-style house on Auckland’s North Shore
The new owners of the house on Greenhithe Road
move into their new mansion in January next year
a couple of weeks after new occupants take over the more famous White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
which was marketed by Harcourts agents Aman Gulia and Rachel Simpson in October
had four bidders at its October 20 auction but passed in
It sold 10 days later for $3.66m after intense negotiations between the two top bidders
That is well above the property’s $2.6m CV set in 2021 as the house was undergoing a substantial renovation
had bought the sprawling house at a mortgagee sale for $2.05m the day before New Zealand went into lockdown in March 2020
They told OneRoof earlier in October that when they bought
the place had been abandoned for over a year and was in a poor state
they still had their other house in Greenhithe
and a business that was shut down – and tattered nerves
Their risk and years of hard renovation work paid off when over 500,000 people admired the property on the agents’ Facebook pages and 67 groups of buyers viewed the property that they had dubbed “a true unicorn property in Greenhithe”
- What it would take to get a 0.75% cut in interest rates
- 50 houses under the hammer: Christchurch homeowners decide to sell en masse
- $4m auction blitz: Two do-ups on the same street sell within days of each other
The agents played the White House connection hard
saying the “Georgian style residence blends presidential luxury with modern family living” and likening the pool area to the “serene South Lawn”
a family moving from the North Shore to Greenhithe to be closer to private school for their two children had been looking for only about six weeks
so they went into a multi-offer with the top bidder
visiting six or more houses in one day,” one of the new owners told OneRoof
When the 444sqm home was bought by the current owners
there had been no power for a year and the property had been neglected
Harcourts agent Aman Gulia said 500,000 people saw the place on Facebook
“We wanted a place we could stay a long time and this location
the quality of the house and the size of the property [1229sqm] was very good
I understand it’s not easy for the vendor because there are so many properties on the market
every buyer wants a cheaper deal and it’s not easy to close the deal.”
The buyer praised the quality of the Hills’ renovation
“We rolled up our sleeves and started the massive clean-up and we have gone over every inch of the property and rescued
The bones of the house were excellent – no expense was spared when it was built,” Kathleen Hill earlier told OneRoof
“We needed four guys with machetes to hack away the growth,” she said of the overgrown gardens
Solid American oak flooring spans the formal and informal living areas and chef’s kitchen downstairs
A grand staircase leads to the five oversized bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs
“The lady who had initially done it did a beautiful job with her planting
so by taking all of the growth away we unearthed a really beautiful space.”
Hill said they were delighted the house had sold to a family
but they’re now excited about their next project – a lifestyle block near Coatesville that will accommodate their son Cameron’s karting sport
“He’s just back from Italy representing New Zealand in Karting and is now competing in the new Toyota GR86 series
We’ll have a lot more driveway for the car transporter and garaging for his cars
The house will get the Kathleen treatment,” she told OneRoof
but we do a house until it is absolutely perfect and say ‘we’ll stay here forever’
Simpson said buyers had been telling the agents it was the best outdoor entertainment area they’d ever seen
“I’m grateful to my vendors for trusting me to do things my way
and that’s exactly what I delivered,” Gulia added

thanks to its stately facade and gracious proportions
It has been transformed by owners Peter and Kathleen Hill into a truly elegant and restful home sanctuary (a far cry from the turmoil its famous namesake is experiencing currently!)
The Hill family had moved down from Whangarei nine years prior and had happily settled in Greenhithe but were looking to upsize
and noticed the property they’d always admired was on the market
the process to purchase and move in wasn’t what you’d call smooth sailing
This was a mortgagee sale and the property had been abandoned the year prior
“A 444sqm home with no power to it for a year
you can imagine the general condition of things like the pool and fridge,” recalls Kathleen
“The previous owner’s belongings were scattered throughout the house and the ivy in the garden was taking over the entire property
It amazed us to see such a beautiful place looking so unloved

‘It’s so lovely to see photos of your house
My mother-in-law built it – that brick floor is so distinctive’,” says Mimi
“She said that she had poured her heart and soul into it
and it’s been such a pleasure to see the garden flourish and be used and loved by us.”

A police search warrant in Greenhithe this morning led to the arrest of a 54-year-old man for drug and ammunition possession.
Waitematā police Sergeant Brian Leslie said a pre-planned search warrant was conducted by the Waitematā Offender Prevention Team – Investigations.
A 54-year-old man found at a Traffic Rd property was taken into custody.
The man was charged with possessing GBL [also known as Fantasy or Liquid Ecstasy] and ammunition as part of an ongoing investigation into the manufacture and supply of Class B controlled drugs.
“He will appear in the Waitākere District Court at a later date on a charge of possession of GBL, as well as possession of ammunition in relation to a small number of rounds located this morning.
“We are not ruling out the possibility of more people being involved.”
Leslie said other equipment was found at the address and further charges were possible.

Mimi Gilmour Buckley has become an unofficial spokesperson for the quiet waterfront suburb
“you’re just 20 minutes from downtown Auckland
I still work centrally but it’s so peaceful – there’s something so old-world and charming about Greenhithe.”
While a move across the bridge might as well be one across the planet as far as many townies are concerned
the pull of 49B Roland Road’s beauty proved too strong for Mimi
husband Stephen and their now three children
“This sounds woo woo but this property transformed our family energy and life so much – the flow of it
The garden is so established that it feels so private
but you get all-day sun everywhere,” Mimi says
49B Roland Road in Greenhithe, North Shore, Auckland, is on the market for sale by deadline sale closing June 4. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom property has a 2021 RV of $2.45 million and OneRoof data shows the property last changed hands in 2022 for $3.025m.
Lush, 1200sqm park-like grounds, with their mature trees and beautiful hydrangea beds, and the elegant yet wonderfully functional residence, were a serene and spacious oasis after 15 years of cramped city-fringe living, plus offered tranquil respite from the couple’s incredibly busy work lives.
Mimi is the founder of not only Mexico and Burger Burger restaurants, which Stephen is co-CEO of, but her latest venture, mindful skincare brand, IAMMI.
Their classic, villa-style two-level home is built in a C-shape around a central courtyard and water feature, which creates a series of well-separated wings to relax and reset, both inside and out.

“If Stephen wants to do work or I want quiet time, we can split up and be oblivious to the fact that there are kids at the other end of the house. My mum also often comes and stays at the weekend in the guest suite upstairs and that’s lovely for her – it’s private, quiet and she’s got a bathroom.”
The impressive entry foyer flows into the open-plan, farmhouse-style kitchen and dining space in one wing and the sitting room and separate lounge in the other, all opening to the garden. Rustic brick floors are cool in summer and warm in winter, while restful white walls and ceilings painted in Resene Half Rice Cake enhance space and light. Leadlights and walls of French doors add to the heritage feel and bring the outside in.
“It’s got that charm of the past but was only built 20 years ago. It’s incredibly well-built and insulated and we’ve also updated all the heat pumps.”
“We also turned the shed out the back into a little health room. The previous owners had it set up as an office, but we put a sauna and a bike in there.”
As for the upcoming move, it will be done with heavy hearts.
“I’m a little bit devastated but we’ve had an amazing two years here. Olympia, my eldest daughter, has quite a lot of special needs and I had plans done to make adjustments to this house to make it more user-friendly for her, but it felt like we were trying to force a square peg into a round hole,” Mimi says.

“It’s such a wonderful home and is perfect as it is, and us ripping it apart to try and put a ceiling hoist in and accessible bathrooms – we thought we should probably just leave it to someone who loves it just the way it is. When you have a disabled child, your needs are just different. Our priority is making sure that everyone in our family lives their best life.”
But the Buckley Gilmour tribe isn’t going far.
“We bought a property up the road. I love the location – we walk to daycare, Octavia’s going to the local primary school, we can walk to the café and walk to the park,” Mimi says.
“It’s nice and flat and has a lovely easy, accessible community, and I’m into that. This property really did change our lives a lot – it bought so much calmness to our family that was needed. It’s been my haven.”
Harcourts agents Simone van Delft and Ronelle Henning, who are marketing 49B Roland Road, say: “We are beyond proud to represent Mimi and Stephen’s absolutely stunning property. Every time we enter the grounds of this unique home, in its prime Greenhithe location, we instantly feel that sense of peace and tranquillity that welcomes us.
“It has all the charm, grace and character features of a traditional villa but this 1996 magical beauty also possesses all the modern luxuries and conveniences for the busy family of today. Privately nestled amongst mature trees and with a gorgeous abundance of hydrangeas, it’s that very special, warm and welcoming sanctuary that we rarely see come to the market.”

An investigation is under way after a residence on Auckland’s North Shore was shot at overnight
leaving a number of bullet holes in its exterior facade
Police responded to an address on Upper Harbour Dr in Greenhithe about 11.40pm on Saturday after reports a firearm was discharged towards a residential address and a burned-out vehicle was located nearby
“A number of bullet holes have been located in the house,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting said
No injuries are reported to have been sustained at the address
Bunting said police had reviewed CCTV footage and spoken with a number of witnesses to determine what occurred and identify those involved
“Police understand this would have been a distressing incident for the community
Police will have a presence in the area over the coming days as we conduct a scene examination and further our enquiries.”
Scene guards remained in place as police conducted a scene examination today

“You can report information by calling 105 or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105
using ‘Update report’ and referencing file number 240407/9228.”
The incident came just four days after a woman was forced into a vehicle and kidnapped from a property in the North Shore suburb of Beach Haven
A police spokesperson said they weren’t aware of any connection between the two incidents
said a trio of people arrived at the property on Sunnyhaven Ave just before 7.30pm on Tuesday
with the female occupant of the address being forced into the vehicle,” McNeill said
“As this has unfolded the firearm has been discharged
and this has been the subject of multiple reports from neighbours to police.”
Police later responded to an incident in Mackay Drive in Greenhithe
“A woman was located with injuries outside an address
and we have established that it is the victim from Beach Haven,” McNeill said
“She has sustained injuries and is in a stable condition
These injuries are not in relation to the firearm being discharged.”
McNeill said the victim is continuing to recover from her injuries in hospital

police issued an appeal for the whereabouts of Ralph Park
Police believe he may be trying to seek medical attention after suffering an injury during the kidnapping on Tuesday night
McNeill said police now had a warrant for Park and had executed several searches in Auckland as part of the hunt for the 25-year-old

An “ear-splitting” gunshot was heard during an altercation at a property in the North Shore suburb of Beach Haven last night before a woman was forced into a vehicle and kidnapped
“As this has unfolded the firearm has been discharged
A neighbour said the gun shot was “ear-splitting” and there was “lots of commotion”
but the area has seen a lot of crime recently with an armed robbery at the pharmacy only a few months ago
“Neighbours came running out to the street afterwards,” she said
It was not like anything she has heard before and she knew instantly it was a gunshot.”
She commended the police’s effort last night and said neighbours felt “reassured” by their presence

and we are treating this matter very seriously.”
Police were following “lines of inquiry” into the matter including who was responsible
An armed policeman is still stationed outside the Sunnyhaven property where a women was kidnapped from last night
A neighbour of the Sunnyhaven property said she had lived on the street for 17 years and nothing like this has happened before
Around midnight a Herald photographer said the Beach Haven address remained heavily guarded by armed police
McNeill said the cordon had now been stood down
Police would still be visible in the North Shore areas involved

“It was quite a serious incident that occurred there and we were worried about the safety of one person
“We’ve now located that person and she is receiving medical attention.”
Police were “pretty satisfied” that both the Beach Haven and Greenhithe areas were now safe
Nobody had been taken into custody and inquiries were still being made
Three different locations - one in Beach Haven and two in Greenhithe - had been cordoned off by police last night
A Herald photographer said by midnight police had left Greenhithe and a vehicle at the scene had been towed

has been labelled a high priority area in a new Auckland Council North West Wild Life Link Prioritisation report
Transpower’s funding will provide 250 Goodnature self-resetting traps powered by a gas canister
Pest management expert Richard Chambers has been brought on board through a Lotteries Environment Grant to manage the project
“Reserves in the area have historically had very little pest control but community groups are now trapping rats and possums in two reserves
The new gas traps will be particularly useful in steep and tricky terrain and will enable us to increase our impact across a larger area of the forest with less time-consuming monitoring,” says Chambers
Auckland Council’s prioritisation report describes the area as being made up of regenerating kanuka forest with small patches of original forest interspersed throughout
The old-growth vegetation types include kauri-broadleaf podocarp forest
kauri-hard beech forest and coastal pohutukawa forest
It is also home to various native lizards including the copper skink
Greenhithe Community Trust Chairperson Amanda Mitchell says having the report has been invaluable to their conservation efforts
“Having the area confirmed as having high ecological value and deserving increased protection has helped increase support within the wider community and with decision makers deliberating over our grant applications,” she says
from humble beginnings a few years when we when we received initial seed funding from the Upper Harbour Local Board
we are now at the stage of kicking off our first big
coordinated pest control project and it’s very exciting,” says Mitchell

An Auckland police officer charged with dangerous driving causing death following the death of a motorcyclist last year has pleaded not guilty and will stand trial before a jury
Police charged the officer earlier this year after an investigation into the circumstances of the crash involving rider Levi Proctor
who lost control of his motorbike and crashed on State Highway 18 on 13 July last year
He crashed after the officer activated his lights and sirens
sought continuing interim name suppression at a hearing at the North Shore District Court on Tuesday before Judge Anna Fitzgibbon
The prosecution did not oppose continuing suppression
granted by Judge Fitzgibbon until at least his next appearance in the same court for a call-over on 27 August
when a trial date is expected to be set for next year
Police last year said they signalled for the rider to stop on SH18 about 10.20am on 13 July after units observed the vehicle speeding
"Very shortly after lights and sirens were activated
the rider has lost control of the motorcycle and crashed
They have since sadly died at the scene," police said in a statement at the time
The crash happened at the Tauhinu Rd off-ramp in Greenhithe
Detective Superintendent Uraia Vakaruru confirmed an officer had been charged in relation to the crash
police have now charged the officer with dangerous driving causing death," Vakaruru said at the time
Police said the officer had been placed on restricted duties while the matter was before the court
Dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison or a $20,000 fine
This story was first published by the NZ Herald.
Sloping down from Upper Harbour Drive in Greenhithe
down to the Hellyers/Oruamo Creek which borders with Beach Haven
is a wonderful escarpment of mature native forest
The 140-hectare high-ecological value area is home to some huge kahikatea and kauri which are hidden away in steep
Greenhithe Community Trust has been working with local residents and volunteers to roll out its first large-scale pest control programme in the area
The main weapon to date has been the deployment of Goodnature gas-powered traps
Around 200 of these traps have now been installed within the escarpment and in surrounding wooded areas
including council reserves and adjacent private properties
“The gas traps are fantastic and extremely effective,” says pest free project co-ordinator Richard Chambers
“Because they are self-resetting and only need servicing and refilling twice a year
they are perfect for deploying in tricky to access terrains like this
“Their low maintenance is also helpful in keeping foot traffic minimal
and thus reducing the chances of introducing other problems into the area
Goodnature gas traps are in place in Redfern Reserve
Auckland Council undertook pest monitoring in the three reserves and found no signs of rats or stoats now being present in the two largest ones
“Those results were great to see and confirm our efforts to date have been effective in significantly reducing pest populations and infestations,” says Chambers
“There remain some significant tracts of private land in the surrounding area where we do not yet have traps in yet where we would very much like to,” says Chambers
“We’re keen to speak directly with any neighbouring property owners who have not yet spoken with us who would like to support this project by approving property access for trap installation and maintenance
“Our goal for the coming year is to work with our community to get more traps into private properties right across Greenhithe
and to grow community involvement and participation with the Greenhithe Community Trust and the Upper Harbour Ecology Network.”
Advancement of this pest free control initiative
along with others in neighbouring Herald Island
have been assisted by funding of the Upper Harbour Ecology Network (UHEN) by Upper Harbour Local Board
UHEN is a network of environmental groups from across Upper Harbour that meet monthly to learn
network and keep up with developments in environmental issues across Auckland
Roll out of the project was made possible last year following a grant from Transpower that enabled the purchase of 200 Goodnature gas traps
and another from the Lottery Environment and Heritage Fund which provided funding for Richard Chambers to work as a dedicated resource to the project
Richard Chambers can be contacted via email at richard@greenhithecommunitytrust.org.nz
Another way of gauging the impact of the work being undertaken is by the monitoring of bird life in the surrounding area
Greenhithe residents are encouraged to take part in this year’s annual New Zealand Garden Bird Survey
which takes place between 29 June and 7 July
“It’s easy to do and it can be done sitting in the backyard with the kids,” says Chambers
if we can get significant numbers of people inputting data from across Greenhithe and neighbouring Beach Haven and Glenfield
we can gain a much more informed picture of what’s going on in our little area of the world,” he says
Visit Landcare Research website for all you need to know on how to participate in this year’s New Zealand Garden Bird survey
Greenhithe Community Trust has also been busy working with local residents
community groups and organisations across Greenhithe to set up rat and possum traps on their properties
“We’ve definitely noticed a big upswing in interest and participation in environmental protection initiatives across Greenhithe,” says Greenhithe Community Trust Chairperson Amanda Mitchell
we have teams of locals working on trap lines over the entire 39 hectares of park area to eradicate rats and possum populations present there
This has provided a focus on trapping in the wider area and that has led to more people coming on board.”
The Trust is keen to hear from people living locals in the area surrounding Wainoni Park wanting to join the Wainoni Park Halo
“The Halo aims to grow an area of protection and sanctuary for our native birds and plant species to recover and grow in strength within,” says Mitchell
Residents can contact Trust Eco Facilitator Nicola Robertson on email at nicola@greenhithecommunitytrust.org.nz for more information on the Wainoni Park Halo
and to request a free trap for use on their private property
Armed police closed a street on Auckland’s North Shore on Tuesday night as they responded to an emergency incident where a woman was injured
The Herald understands police earlier responded to a reported kidnapping in Beach Haven and that the two incidents are linked
Inspector Kerry Watson said police received calls shortly after 7pm of an incident in Beach Haven
a number of police units went to the address
“As a result of what we discovered at that address
shortly afterwards having received information we went to Greenhithe.”
Watson said police had located an injured female who was believed to be related to the incident in Beach Haven
“All I can say in regards to the Beach Haven incident is we’d been given some information there..
it was quite a serious incident that occurred there and we were worried about the safety of one person
Watson said police were “pretty satisfied” that both the Beach Haven and Greenhithe areas are now safe
There’s still a lot of inquiry work that needs to take place in order to locate people that we need to speak to.”
Three different locations were cordoned off by police
“The residents of Greenhithe may see an increased police attendance and also in Beach Haven in the morning until these scenes have been dealt with,” Watson said last night
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said they were attending an incident on Mackay Dr in Greenhithe
They were assessing one patient and being assisted by police
The patient was being transported in a moderate condition to North Shore Hospital
A photographer at the scene said armed police had blocked Mackay Dr at the intersection of Greenhithe Rd
The police Eagle helicopter is also understood to be hovering above Greenhithe
“Police are in the area working to determine what has occurred,” a spokesperson earlier said
The Herald understands the two incidents are related
A volley of rapid gunfire rang out before a loud car engine could be heard leaving Greenhithe in a late-night drive-by house shooting
which left a residential property riddled with bullets and a car burnt out a short distance away
One resident told the Herald he heard eight shots “in quick succession” before a car screeched off down the road at around 11.30pm on Saturday
“The shots definitely sounded like [they came from a] rifle from the cracks and much larger than a 22 calibre.”
He said it sounded a V8 car screeched away down Upper Harbour Drive
either from the farmers in the area or from “criminal activity”
Multiple community members said the house is “known for its police visits” and causing trouble
Car and home break-ins were common in the area
Another resident said she also heard the shots and the loud car moments before the sound of the police helicopter
“It kept going between Northcote and Schnapper Rock for a while and eventually it went elsewhere.”
Police said they were investigating the incident
which included looking into a burnt-out car found a short distance away
No injuries have been reported after the shooting
Police will have a presence in the area over the coming days as we conduct a scene examination and further our inquiries.”
Police were expected to complete a scene examination today
Anyone who has CCTV footage or witnessed the incident is asked to contact police
“You can report information by calling 105 or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105, using ‘Update report’ and referencing file number 240407/9228.”

An investigation is under way after a person died when a raised crane touched power lines at a North Shore worksite.
WorkSafe has up to 12 months to complete the investigation and a spokesperson said it could not comment while the investigation was under way.
Police said the person who died on Saturday cannot yet be named.
A woman described seeing paramedics performing CPR on the person after emergency services rushed to Tauhinu Rd in Greenhithe at 3.23pm.
One resident said the crane operators had been struggling to lift objects from the back of the truck all week.
“The truck was on a steep angle in the driveway, and the crane operator had three packets of timber, was struggling to lift one and was trying to reach as far as he could,” he said.
Another neighbour said she saw the victim lying on the ground after the accident, covered by a sheet.
“He’s hit the power line above the building site, but then they came and picked up the body and took him away.”
Another witness also saw emergency services frantically doing CPR on the victim.
“One of the police officers asked us not to look at the site,” one neighbour said.
He believed more safeguards should have been in place because the contractors were working “in such proximity to power lines”.
Several neighbours were forced to park in adjacent streets and have police walk them through to their houses after the accident.
Some of them lost power for three to four hours.
Vector said itswitched off power in the immediate area to help emergency services and it was restored just before 7.30pm that night.
