Hamilton finished eighth in the race which was won in dominant style by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri
During the race Hamilton asked Ferrari to have his teammate Charles Leclerc
switch places with him as the British driver was clearly quicker
He was exasperated at the time the team took took to make the call
He also referred to it as “not good teamwork” and later
after the team switched the two drivers places back
asked with no little sarcasm whether he should also give up a place to the chasing Williams of Carlos Sainz

“Fred came to my room, I just put my hand on his shoulder and was like, ‘dude, calm down, don’t be so sensitive’,” he said. “I could have said way worse things on the radio. You hear some of the things others have said in the past, some of it was sarcasm. Look, you’ve got to understand we’re under a huge amount of pressure within the car.

It wasn’t effing and blinding and anything like that
Vasseur maintained he was happy with the way the team had called their decisions and that he understood his driver’s position
“I had a discussion with Lewis and I can perfectly understand the frustration,” he said “They are champions, they want to win races. It’s not easy. It’s never easy. And I didn’t see another team to do it today. That’s why we took the responsibility to do it. We are racing for Ferrari first and honestly I think as a team we did a good job.”
Vasseur also confirmed that the team’s policy if they switch driver positions to allow one to attack a car ahead
and if no advantage is gained and a position is not made
they will revert to the original order as they did in Miami
In a hotly contested battle to be the new home for the Jim Beam Homegrown music festival
the festival is relocating to Claudelands Oval on 14 March 2026
ushering in a thrilling new era for both the event and the city
The festival has long been a cornerstone of Aotearoa’s music scene
showcasing over 50 top-tier Kiwi acts across genres like rock
Mayor Paula Southgate was delighted at the news
“Bringing Jim Beam Homegrown to Hamilton is a monumental win for our city
It’s a celebration of New Zealand music and culture
and we’re proud to host it at Claudelands Oval
This event will invigorate our local economy and put Hamilton on the national stage.”
"Hamilton is brilliant at hosting big events across many great venues and that is part of what makes our city a great place to visit or call home."
The festival’s move is anticipated to boost local businesses
injecting fresh energy into Hamilton’s cultural landscape
Hamilton City Council Deputy Chief Executive says Claudelands Oval is a versatile and spacious area
“Our initial estimates expect more than 25,000 festival goers will spend around $3m during their visit and result in 16,000 visitor nights,” said Murray
"Hamilton has the benefit of being the hub of the Waikato and this is a win for the whole upper North Island
We've proven we can deliver big events and are ready and excited to make this next era of the festival unforgettable."

Artist and zinester Nina Harper created the poster for the Kirikiriroa Hamilton Zinefest 2025
Kirikiriroa Hamilton Zinefest returns for its 11th year
Zines, an abbreviation of fanzine, a term that originated in the 1940s to describe amateur science-fiction fan magazines, are short-run, self-published magazines that can be about anything
While the inaugural event in 2014 saw 20 stallholders show off their self-made publications, this year, the Kirikiriroa Hamilton Zinefest team predicts 60 stallholders will take over Hamilton Central Library on May 17
“The Hamilton zine-making community is a really important part of how I’ve grown over the last few years as an illustrator,” Harper said
she dropped out and went looking for ways to experiment with art
but decided only in 2017 to become a stallholder
“I realised this is a completely accessible thing for me to try out
I put together a few illustrations in a comic style to see what happened and it turned out to be a really fun and positive experience,” she said
She was amazed by the encouragement she got from members of the public and other creatives about her narrative zines
“I realised this is actually what I’ve been wanting to do the whole time.”
Harper works at local art supplies retailer Gordon Harris
She said working there enabled her to explore using different mediums
which she now prefers and showcased in her poster
“[The poster illustration] looks like a very sweet ..
But there are funny little details that catch your interest.”
which when put together become what Harper calls
Drawing inspiration from classical illustration and Halloween themes
Harper’s design also reflects her love of Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes
and I can definitely see the sense of humour influencing some of my work
Harper’s playful mix of spooky and sweet imagery continues into her tongue-in-cheek zines
Harper has branched out to attend other festivals and thinks moving Hamilton’s event to the library has helped it grow
“It can attract lots and lots of different people
“I tabled next to a couple of kids who were there with their parents once
While some stallholders have been making zines for years
“There’s not a sense of competition or that you have to work to a certain standard,” Harper said
“If you have a little bit of an interest in doing something creative
For those who are keen to try their hand at zinemaking
there will be zine-making workshops ahead of the market day
there will also be a collaborative zine-making zone
Zinester Awards in eight categories and an all-ages After Party featuring live music from Moon Hotene (Kirikiriroa)
'The team have nailed it – it’s a strategy that everyone can understand.'
A couple of hours after the first of two nights of the Ultimate Driver Challenge at Albion Park
After some drinks and socialising at the track following the races
a small group decided to “kick-on” for a few more in a downtown bar
Sugars was a fan of Ultimate Driver Challenge
he made the trip – a rushed one of less than 24 hours – largely to see friends from the US
superstar driver Yannick Gingras and his wife
Maybe he’d originally planned to stay the whole weekend
but Sugars had drives at Menangle on the Saturday night
But Sugars wasn’t missing the chance to see his friends
has penned in tributes since Sugars’ devastating passing last Friday week
this was to be their year of doing things differently … enjoying life more
when Sugars went to Menangle on the Saturday night to drive
Tubbs took her chance to get to Brisbane to see the Gingras couple
I’d known Sugars for almost 20 years and wrote one of the first stories about the then exciting young talent when he first moved from South Australia to the big smoke in Victoria
but worked closely together on many occasions as journo and participant
He was always helpful and eager to promote the game
I’d like to think it was a relationship built on mutual respect
in the bar in the early hours of the morning
I got a glimpse into the Greg Sugars so many knew far better than me and loved
Sugars thanked me for the way I’d given he and Jess space when the career of their champion trotter Just Believe was in limbo for a few weeks and before they eventually retired him
He was also appreciative of the tributes for the great trotter’s deeds
He had but a few hours in Brisbane to be with “his” people
difficult and deeply emotional conversations with people who knew Sugars far better than I did and were much closer to him
The most we ever spoke was during his time in Sweden with Just Believe
Maybe he was a bit bored at times and missing home
compared to running the huge stable at home with Jess and driving at so many meetings
What sticks with me most is his absolute love for the horse
Sugars was absolutely gutted after Just Believe struck trouble
galloped and lost all chance in that heat of the iconic Elitlopp at Solvalla
facing some of the greatest trotters anywhere and without a support network
it would have been easy for Sugars to pull the pin and go home
someone else could’ve trained and driven him
and an extra layer he seemed to feel to prove a point for Down Under trotting
The satisfaction and joy he felt when Just Believe bounced-back for two epic placings in elite company in those other two runs was immense
They were two of the best runs of his stellar career
Sugars and “Harry” (Just Believe’s stable name) won an army of Scandinavian fans and truckloads of respect
You saw that 18 months later with the deluge of tributes from that part of the world after Sugars’ passing
Sugars boasted a Hall of Fame CV on the track
but what he did off it for the game was every bit as important
I’m so glad he got to experience the Elitlopp for all its highs and lows
and that the trip finished in such an uplifting fashion
He got to feel like the hero he was in the eyes of many
As he said at the time while preparing to head to Sweden: “It’s the trip of a lifetime
most felt it would be the first of many such experiences for Sugars at the height of his powers
It’s just so hard to comprehend that won’t be the case
Carlos Sainz escaped a penalty for his collision with Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the Miami Grand Prix
that being just one of two incidents for which the Williams driver was summoned to the stewards’ office
Sainz was back inside the points in Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix where the Spaniard brought his FW47 home in ninth place
scoring two points in what has been a tricky start to his Williams career
His points were in jeopardy on Sunday evening when the stewards noted him for a collision with Lewis Hamilton on the very last lap of the Grand Prix
Having swapped positions with team-mate Charles Leclerc in a tension-fraught race for the seven-time World Champion
Hamilton had Sainz all over his rear wing on the final lap of the race
Sainz was summoned to the stewards’ office
but escaped without a penalty as the stewards declared both drivers ‘contributed’ to the collision
👉F1 penalty points: First points of 2025 handed out as Verstappen closest to ban threshold
👉 F1’s penalty system explained: How does a driver pick up a penalty from the FIA?
The stewards ruled: ‘Car 55 attempted an overtake on the inside of Car 44 into Turn 17 and both cars made contact at the apex
‘The Stewards determine that both drivers contributed to the incident as Car 55 did not clearly get in a position to have the right to the racing line according to the Driving Standards Guidelines and at the same time Car 44 turned into the corner earlier than usual and therefore impacted the driver of Car 55 in his overtaking attempt
‘No driver is deemed predominantly to blame for the collision and therefore no further action is taken.’
The former Ferrari driver was back in the stewards’ office a short while later
this time to answer the charge of failing to slow for a waved yellow flag
he was handed a warning as the stewards took into account that Sainz could not see the yellow flag nor were there a light panel in place
meaning he did not have sufficient warning
‘The driver did not slow down for the yellow flag and admitted in the hearing that he neither saw a yellow flag nor any stopped car,’ read the stewards’ ruling explaining their decision
‘He stated that he lifted the throttle after being informed of a yellow flag by the team
this being slightly after passing the yellow flag zone
it is evident that the yellow flag was only shown from one marshal post and was shown against a yellow background in a very quick part of the track
there was no light panel in place at that point and therefore neither the team nor the driver got any visual or audible warning
‘The car causing the yellow flag also was not visible from the driver’s perspective as it was hidden behind an exit
‘The Stewards consider all this as a unique scenario and
taking all these mitigating circumstances into account

Lewis Hamilton quipped that there was some “dirty driving” from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly after they tangled ahead of the Miami Grand Prix
And that hit came when the 20 Formula 1 drivers got their chance to take fully drivable and team bespoke LEGO big build cars for a drive around the Miami International Autodrome
replacing the usual drivers’ parade procedure
It was quite the effort to put together these life-size
as the stars of F1 took them for a drive in front of the Miami audience ahead of the Grand Prix
Capturing all the details of the real F1 cars, down to sponsor logos and authentic Pirelli tyres, Hamilton said that was the “most fun drivers’ parade” he has ever taken part in
quite the statement considering he has been a part of the F1 grid since 2007
which was muscling between the Ferrari and Mercedes LEGO cars down the back straight
with these cars reaching speeds of 20 km/h
it was a very low-speed tap for F1 standards
Hamilton spoke with a broad smile about the experience after exiting the Ferrari
“That was the most fun drivers’ parade we’ve ever had,” he began
“Some dirty driving from this one here [Gasly]
because obviously when we’re on track
big thank you to everyone in Miami for having us.”

👉 Untelevised Lewis Hamilton radio message uncovered in key Miami GP call
Miami GP polesitter Max Verstappen joked that before lights out
the track would need some attention after that Ferrari and Alpine collision
“I do think they have to sweep the track because there is quite a bit of LEGO debris now on the track,” he said with a smile
“A few cars collided along the way.”
He joked that he and Yuki Tsunoda were lacking a bit of “top speed” in the LEGO Red Bull
as the focus switched to the Miami Grand Prix from there

The Jim Beam Homegrown festival has found its new home
with Jim Beam Homegrown organisers announcing its new host city
The next Homegrown festival is at the Claudelands Oval in Hamilton on March 14 next year
They cited “a myriad of personal and logistical reasons”
including being unable to grow the festival within the Wellington waterfront location
Festival director Andrew Tuck and co-director Michael Lamusse said they were proud Waikato locals
and the event was “coming home” to the place “where it all began”
X*Air gradually evolved into the Homegrown festival
“Returning to the Waikato is not just about nostalgia; it’s about creating something that celebrates our roots and gives back to the region that inspired us,” Tuck said
“We want the whole of Aotearoa to feel proud of this festival
and we are committed to making it unforgettable”
The organisers said Hamilton’s status as New Zealand’s fastest-growing city offered potential to “expand and evolve while staying true to its roots”
Its central location was another reason for choosing it
“Accessibility is key for Homegrown,” Tuck said
“Being close to such a large population makes this dream even more achievable”
several cities presented hosting proposals
but Hamilton’s “unique charm and cultural significance” stood out
Hamilton mayor Paula Southgate said with Hamilton-Australia flights starting in June
the event would be easily accessible for Kiwis and international tourists
Waikato Chamber of Commerce chief executive Don Good said the move was a great opportunity “in so many ways”
“With the festival’s reputation for selling out and drawing crowds of more than 20,000
local businesses can expect a surge in foot traffic and revenue.”
Homegrown has taken place on Wellington’s waterfront since it started in 2008, growing from a crowd of 10,000 to 23,000.
It showcases genres including rock, reggae, and hip-hop, and has hosted iconic acts including Sir Dave Dobbyn, Shihad, Six60, Shapeshifter and Opshop.
A Wellington City Council spokesperson said while the council was “disappointed” to see Homegrown leave Wellington, they understood the decision.
“We will continue to explore new opportunities to bring exciting experiences to our community. We wish the festival organisers all the best in their new location”.
Mitchell Hageman joined the Herald’s entertainment and lifestyle team in 2024. He previously worked as a multimedia journalist for Hawke’s Bay Today.

'No one was meant to hear it,' Moller said while discussing his life, music and career.
nine other cities raised their hand to host the event

Organisers announced in January Homegrown would be finding a new home for 2026 after 18 years in Wellington
Director Andrew Tuck said in March they were forced to choose between moving on or risk stagnating in the same location.
Homegrown's old site on the Wellington waterfront.
"We've used every little bit of space. If we move a stage now - or move an entrance - it just doesn't become as efficient,” he said.
The festival had gone from hosting about 10,000 music fans to having more than 23,000 people soaking up the country's best acts across five stages.
Hamilton’s Claudelands Oval, which can fit up to 50,000 fans, will host 50 bands for the 14 March, 2026 show. The spot gives organisers three-times as much room to play with.
Download MP34m“The idea of having more space means that we can do some more things that showcase New Zealand talent… add in a few bits and pieces, a few little surprises there,” explained Tuck ahead of the announcement.
“People would have experienced at Homegrown this year a couple of stages got very, very tight… we just couldn't expand there any further.”
Tuck said they weighed up nine different cities to host Homegrown – including Auckland, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Rotorua and Christchurch. They considered things like transport, flights, accommodation and how fans would get there.
It came down to Dunedin and Hamilton, and Tuck said they pondered: “What does the site look like? Can the site expand? Can the site hold this event for the next 10 years and continually grow and do different things?”
It’s a boon for Hamilton, which stands to potentially attract between 20-25,000 people with an economic benefit of somewhere between $4 and 6 million for that weekend, according to previous economic development reports for the annual event.
Homegrown began as X*Air festival, an extreme sports event located on the Waikato River with NZ music as a sideline attraction. Claudelands hosted X*Air for three years before it moved to the Wellington waterfront and eventually evolved into Homegrown.
“When we first started, everyone said we wouldn't last more than two years because New Zealand music wasn't strong enough and here we are 18 years later,” said Tuck, who is himself based in Hamilton with his family.
“I have been traveling to Wellington for the last 22 years for events and we've always wanted to bring something to Hamilton… and we just feel now that's the right time for us to come back to come back to our roots.”
The first set list announcement for the 2026 event will drop in September.

Fred Vasseur has defended Ferrari’s handling of the team orders situation that unfolded between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in the Miami Grand Prix

Vasseur explained that the squad were trying to understand certain factors behind the difference in pace between Leclerc and Hamilton
“It didn't take so long – it was one lap and a half or something like this,” the Team Principal said

Community consultation supports Hamilton City Council forming a joint water company with Waikato District Council to deliver water services
Hamilton councillors unanimously agreed to consult on forming a Council-Controlled Organisation (CCO) with its neighbouring council
The CCO would deliver drinking water and wastewater services with stormwater managed by each council
The proposal was in response to government concerns about under-investment in waters infrastructure
Successive governments have driven water reforms requiring councils to work together to create bigger organisations which can drive efficiencies and over time
make critical waters infrastructure more affordable for ratepayers
Hamilton City Council put two options to its community; forming a CCO with Waikato District or forming an in-house business unit and continuing to manage water itself
Council was clear the in-house business unit option was only provided because the government required a second option be provided to the community
Forming a business unit was not supported by councillors
A month-long consultation ending at the end of April saw more than 18,000 views of waters and rating information on Council’s website
More than 280,000 people were reached on social media and more than 3000 emails were sent to people who had sought more information
74% said forming a joint waters company was the best option for the city
A number of organisations submitted including the Property Council of New Zealand and the University of Waikato
the University said forming a waters CCO was a “strategic move that will help address the current constraints and support the continued growth and success of Hamilton”
The Property Council said a CCO would help ensure a consistent approach to asset management and planning
“A CCO will also enable improved planning and implementation for increased network capacity
This should result in a more resilient and flexible system.”
Around 30 submitters have asked to speak to Councillors about their submission
Hamilton City Council will hear them tomorrow (Tuesday
Waikato District Council will receive feedback on its waters proposal until 11 May
as part of its 2025-2034 Long-Term Plan consultation process
Both councils will make a final decision on how to provide future water services in June this year

A woman has been left shaken after watching a cyclist go under the wheels of a logging truck in a horrific pre-dawn accident at a Hamilton intersection
The 17-year-old female cyclist faces multiple surgeries and a long recovery after the incident
The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating
Witness Stephanie Sammut was sitting next to the logging truck at the intersection of Mill and Ulster Sts early yesterday morning
“I saw a cyclist in the bicycle lane,” she told the Herald
The cyclist then decided to move out of the bike lane and into the cycle bay in front of the truck
and then all of a sudden the truck driver hit the back wheel of the cyclist and she went under
stopped beside the truck and called emergency services
“A Waikato Regional Council van was behind the truck
and I told him I was on the phone to 111.”
The Hamilton woman said the council staff member got on the ground
speaking to the cyclist trapped under the truck
The cyclist’s sister told the Herald yesterday she was extremely fortunate to survive
but her body was left badly broken after being crushed by the truck
Her injuries include her pelvis being “split in half”
all the skin and muscle being torn off her left arm
fractures in both wrists and ankles and several broken ribs
She said she had been trapped for about 10 minutes before firefighters were able to free her
The teen was on her way to the second day of work as an engineering apprentice
Her sister said she had worked hard to graduate early to do the course
A police spokesperson said they were called to the incident at 5.55am

The next top cop of the troubled Victoria police force embraces his "outsider" status to curb its leadership malaise and has a stern warning for crooks
Former New Zealand Police commissioner Mike Bush won the race to become Victoria's chief commissioner after months of top-level staffing woes

The Kiwi conceded the job will be no picnic
with Victoria's crime rate hitting an almost decade-high in 2024

"These crime issues are actually global
they are quite similar wherever you go but it's not good enough just to turn up after the act
Rising youth crime and high-profile cases of alleged offenders committing crimes while on bail spurred the Victorian government to strengthen laws in March
Bush said he was familiar with the crackdown but bail laws were just one part of the solution to tackling youth crime
along with a "prevention mindset"
He retired from the NZ police force in 2020 after joining in 1978 and spending his final six years in the top job
Whakaari/White Island volcano eruption and Covid-19 pandemic were among the biggest crises Bush confronted during his tenure
Bush also made headlines in 2022 after it emerged he had a past drink-driving conviction when unsuccessfully applying to become head of the UK's Metropolitan Police
Former New Zealand police minister Stuart Nash describedr Bush as hard but fair
He said Bush regularly met with police forces across the Tasman in his previous role and recalled travelling with him to every district across New Zealand once a year to chew the fat with communities
and then we all had biscuits and a cup of tea," Nash told AAP
"Mike is someone who had deep credibility in policing."
The state government has not handed the reins of Victoria Police to an outsider since former NSW Police assistant commissioner Christine Nixon in 2001
The Kiwi was happy to wear the "outsider" tag and is already hatching plans to hit the ground running
"I've got a lot to do to come up to speed," Bush said
"Culture is a consequence of leadership."
establishing relationships with community groups amid rising tensions and increasing police visibility on the beat were among his other top initial priorities

Bush intends to speak with Patton before starting and said he wouldn't shy away from pushing back if he disagreed with the government
Premier Jacinta Allan said a recruitment agency was hired and instructed to find a leader capable of addressing the "challenges" plaguing the force

Eleven inmate deaths in less than two months
A US$3 billion (NZ$5 billion) repair backlog
a stunning directive from President Donald Trump for the crisis-plagued federal Bureau of Prisons to “REBUILD
AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!” — the notorious penitentiary on an island in San Francisco Bay that last held inmates more than 60 years ago
Even as the Bureau of Prisons struggles with short staffing
chronic violence and crumbling infrastructure at its current facilities
Trump is counting on the agency to fulfill his vision of rebooting the infamously inescapable prison known in movies and pop culture as The Rock
Trump declared in a social media post that a “substantially enlarged and rebuilt” Alcatraz will house the nation’s “most ruthless and violent Offenders”
Newly appointed Bureau of Prisons Director William K Marshall III said that the agency “will vigorously pursue all avenues to support and implement the President’s agenda” and that he has ordered “an immediate assessment to determine our needs and the next steps”
We look forward to restoring this powerful symbol of law
and justice,” Marshall said in a statement
“We will be actively working with our law enforcement and other federal partners to reinstate this very important mission.”
an 8.9-hectare spit of land with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline
was once the crown jewel of the federal prison system and home to some of the nation’s most notorious criminals
including gangsters Al Capone and George Machine Gun Kelly
But skyrocketing repair and supply costs compelled the Justice Department to close the prison in 1963
and the Bureau of Prisons has long since replaced Alcatraz with modern penitentiaries
including a maximum-security prison in Florence
The former and perhaps future penitentiary is now a popular tourist attraction and a national historic landmark
It’s controlled by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
meaning the Bureau of Prisons could be in for an interagency tug of war if it tries to wrest away control of the island
Trump’s Alcatraz directive is yet another challenge for the Bureau of Prisons as it struggles to fix lingering problems while responding to the president’s priorities on incarceration and immigrant detention
includes taking in thousands of immigration detainees under an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security
The problems at the Bureau of Prisons transcend administrations and facilities
An ongoing Associated Press investigation has uncovered deep
previously unreported flaws within the Bureau of Prisons over the last few years
including widespread criminal activity by employees
and severe understaffing that has hampered responses to emergencies
then-President Joe Biden signed a law strengthening oversight of the agency
It remains the Justice Department’s largest agency
155,000 inmates and an annual budget of about US$8 billion (NZ$13.4 billion)
but the Trump administration’s cost-cutting measures have eliminated some pay bonuses that were credited with retaining and attracting new staff
That has resulted in long overtime shifts for some workers and the continued use of a policy known as augmentation
teachers and other workers are pressed into duty to guard inmates
A Bureau of Prisons official told Congress at a hearing in February that more than 4000 beds within the system — the equivalent of at least two full prisons — are unusable because of dangerous conditions like leaking or failing roofs
a 37-year-old Florida businessman who was found dead April 28 in a suspected suicide at a federal jail in Miami
He was awaiting trial on charges that he kidnapped and killed his estranged wife in Spain
inmate Ramadhan Jaabir Justice was killed in a fight at the federal penitentiary in Pollock
where he was serving a nearly 11-year sentence for a conviction related to an armed robbery
As Trump was ordering Alcatraz’s reopening
correctional officers at the same Miami jail were fighting to curb the spread of tuberculosis and Covid-19
isolating inmates after they tested positive for the diseases
immigration detainees at the facility ripped out a fire sprinkler and flooded a holding cell during a lengthy intake process
the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin
has sat idle for more than a year after the Bureau of Prisons cleared it of inmates in the wake of rampant sexual abuse by employees
the agency made the closure permanent and idled six prison camps across the country to address “significant challenges
crumbling infrastructure and limited budgetary resources”
While Trump hails Alcatraz as a paragon of the federal prison system’s cherished past
other facilities stand as reminders of its recent troubles
They include the federal jail in Manhattan
which remains idle after Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide there in 2019 exposed deep flaws in its operations
where 23 inmates have been charged in recent months with crimes ranging from smuggling weapons in a Doritos bag to the stabbing last month of a man convicted in the killing of hip-hop legend Jam Master Jay
A person is in custody after an alleged theft
which left a person injured on the grounds of Palmerston North Hospital
Police said officers were called to a Ruahine St carpark about 1.30pm on Tuesday
Police said the alleged offender left the scene and was found a short time later
"Police would like to thank the members of the public who witnessed the incident and intervened to assist the victim," a police spokesperson said
That same night a staff member was knocked unconscious
Staff have been calling for security improvements
Health NZ MidCentral operations group director Sarah Fenwick previously told RNZ it was committed to making staff feel safer
She said these included a security escort to vehicles
increasing security services on hospital grounds
and "opening up" access to the staff carpark for people working afternoon and night shifts
"Lighting has been audited in all outside carparking areas to ensure it is well maintained," she said
"Interim access to well-lit parking onsite
with dedicated security for staff working afternoon and night shifts
while a more permanent solution for out-of-hours carparking is developed."

More than 25kg of cocaine has been seized and four men arrested following an joint investigation into the importation of the drug into Christchurch
Police and Customs received information about a "significant importation" of cocaine that had come through Lyttelton Port on March 29
Search warrants were then executed across the country by specialist teams to support investigators with evidence gathering
including possession of cocaine for supply and burglary
and will appear in various district courts across a range of dates
Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Sparks said the seizure equated to more than 250,000 doses of cocaine and $9 million of harm
"That is an enormous amount of damage and misery that had been heading into our communities that has now been halted through this investigation."
Sparks said the success of the investigation was partly down to the "excellent partnership" between Customs and the police
"We continue to have a focus on engaging with businesses and supporting their legitimate services by keeping them safe with prevention advice to deter drug trafficking organisations’ attempts to exploit their people and premises."
Customs acting investigations manager Rachael Manning said the investigation resulted from quick action and close collaboration between the agencies as well as industry partners
"We know that transnational and serious organised crime groups are actively targeting New Zealand to drive up both demand and supply of illegal drugs such as cocaine for maximum profit
They’re using every method possible to exploit any vulnerabilities within international supply chains
in secure areas or on vessels themselves."
A search and rescue operation is underway for a Masterton man in his 70s missing since Sunday
John Rafferty was last seen at Masterton Railway Station about midday on May 4
The 74-year-old did not board a train and left on foot about 20 minutes later
Matheson said it was possible Rafferty was staying with a friend but police and loved ones "want to know he’s safe"
and John doesn’t have his cell phone or wallet," he said
A search team and a helicopter has been out looking for the missing man
"We are really keen to know that he’s safe."

The Commerce Commission has filed criminal charges against Woolworths NZ for alleged inaccurate pricing and misleading specials that may have breached the Fair Trading Act
The commission filed the charges against Woolworths in the Auckland District Court
It indicated in December last year that it would be filing separate criminal charges against Woolworths and two Pak'nSave supermarkets
the commission said there were ongoing issues with pricing in the supermarket sector and the operators may have breached the Fair Trading Act
deputy chair Anne Callinan said operators should know what the expectations were
"Supermarkets have long been on notice about the importance of accurate and clear pricing and specials
and we're not satisfied with the continuing issues we're seeing across the industry
"Pricing accuracy is a consumer right and an expectation of a competitive market
well-resourced businesses that should invest the time and effort to get pricing and promotions right."
She said the charges were filed to remind all supermarkets that they are expected to fix the pricing accuracy issues and implement better processes
In a statement when the charges were announced Woolworths managing director Spencer Sonn said it was important customers could trust prices advertised at their supermarkets
Woolworths said it has cooperated with the Commerce Commission's pricing investigation for some time

Former prime minister Sir John Key says he remains optimistic about Donald Trump's domestic economic policy despite opposing the tariff strategy that has sent global markets into turmoil in recent months
who served as prime minister for eight years
was the keynote speaker at an Auckland business summit earlier today
Sir John told 1News he believed Trump would ultimately take a more moderate approach to tariffs than initially proposed
"I'm not a fan of tariff policies
I don't think they really work," he said
as I think the stock market is telling you at the moment
that actually there will be a more sensible landing place for the tariffs that he's wanting to impose."
Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy
"They're just a negotiating point
I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point
"What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction
You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked
The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part
'I'm going to negotiate case by case'."
Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US
but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy
Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy
he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States
It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs."
Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries
Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing"
particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented
"I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said
noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies
who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks
said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions"
"I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view
but I don't think we should panic either
and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said
"There are growing markets around the world
It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view
We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us."
Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris
he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs
middle-income consumers or consumers in America do
because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country
He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs
and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that
and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade."
Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis
Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her
All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state
thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February
Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg
which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state
Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband
safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said
Hanson was assigned the case in late February and
he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region
They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account
obituaries and marriage licenses from that region
they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg
including date of birth and social security number
Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address
"I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say
‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me
I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.”
Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share
saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found
“I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had
having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said
Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of
And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting
he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to
so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything
any phone numbers of family members back here," he said
"Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.”
Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe
That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town
While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane
for the other it has caused problems for 36 years
It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door
Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail
to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard
a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp
remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening
She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane
whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name
Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him
“You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.”
Another Shane William Pritchard had been born in Otago
They were separated by just two weeks and about 50 miles – one growing up in Mosgiel
the other in Milton – but also by the lives they’d been leading
To watch the full video story go to TVNZ+
Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school
He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes
I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go
Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police
he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence
one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.”
he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his
He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on
“I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash
Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined
and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money
Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment
so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action
'Anything I could get away with
Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem
But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use
Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase
Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences
Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process
the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane
The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media
He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended
He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously
Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s
the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again
This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes
But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice
he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines
He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays
It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health
not realising the constant stress it placed on his life
John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living
worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.”
he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point
He described going for days at a time unable to eat or sleep wondering what might happen next
"Am I going to be in a position where they've got me in handcuffs or I've got debt collectors coming to the door?" ...You're spiralling into this black hole." He started taking anti-anxiety medication which helped
And events regarding Milton Shane seemed to settle
Milton Shane was charged for fishing without a licence in Twizel and failing to comply with fisheries officers
But a court registrar incorrectly entered the birth date of Mosgiel Shane in the system
both Shanes were being chased to pay the $1530 fine
It was Mosgiel Shane who spotted the error and rang the court
He also sent a statement from his manager saying he’d not been fishing in Twizel that day
The reply he got was to say he’d been given the wrong form and that they wouldn’t accept his proof
They just wanted to know how I was going to pay the fine.”
The first Milton Shane knew about this was when Fair Go told him Mosgiel Shane had been chased for the fine
He was told to pay up or face the consequences
feeling he shouldn’t have to pay good money to correct someone else’s mistake
But it cost Mosgiel Shane over $5000 in legal fees
and took months of back and forth between him
“Why should anybody have to pay their own money to right somebody else's wrongs and prove who they are
I’m sick and tired of proving who I am all the time.”
He wanted the Ministry of Justice to take responsibility and reimburse him for his legal costs
saying court staff such as the registrar in this case have immunity if they make mistakes such as the one made here
and if I make a mistake and it's affecting my client
that it's going to cost them money to rectify a mistake that I've made.”
he deserves a million apologies from those guys,” she says
Milton Shane told Fair Go he still gets in trouble
but wants the other Shane to know he doesn’t use his birth date anymore
And he had a message for him: “We’ve got to get it sorted for you

He says he doesn’t hold any grudges and accepts Milton Shane’s apology
And he believes the only way for that to happen is for the courts and the Ministry of Justice to give him a guarantee that mix-ups won’t occur in the future
Fair Go asked the Ministry of Justice to appear in person to apologise and provide reassurance to Shane of its plans to guard against these mistakes
The Ministry declined our request to be on camera saying any comment on an individual case would compromise the independence of the courts as the Ministry operates separately
But it did send a written apology directly to Mosgiel Shane
It also admitted mistakes can occur in clerical records

A stranger allegedly tried to force an 8-year-old boy into a car outside an Auckland primary school yesterday before bystanders intervened and the man drove off
Police confirmed they were investigating an incident from around 3pm on Monday outside Rowandale School in the suburb of Manurewa
"Police are still working to understand exactly what was occurring at the time and our enquiries are ongoing," a spokesperson said
"We have spoken with the boy and will continue to work through a careful process
Rowandale School principal Karl Vasau said in a statement to social media that other parents had intervened
"The student then made his way home and told his parents who then came into school to let us know and then they rung the police."
Vasau told 1News the pupil was "doing fine" following the incident and was surrounded by a "supportive
"Our student is safe now and his family are thankful that nothing further happened to their boy but are wanting us all to be aware and stay safe
It's about working with that child to make them feel safe again
but also looking forward to returning back to school with a little bit of normality."
Police had reacted "pretty quickly" to the reports
"They've been in this morning to touch base and connect
the community police constables are going to come back to tomorrow to address the whole school in relation to what had happened and around keeping themselves safe before and after school."
Increased police patrols would remain in the area after school from Wednesday

Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said
I love you” in Portuguese rose from the crowd behind him
whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor
which also displayed what appears to be the album cover art — an X-ray of a pelvis
"100% written in blood," the website read
The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

Kim Kardashian thought she was going to be raped and killed when criminals broke into her bedroom in central Paris
tied her up and stole more than US$6 million in jewellery
10 people will go on trial in Paris over the robbery
abduction and kidnapping of the media personality and the concierge of the residence where she was staying during Paris Fashion Week the night of October 2
Kardashian’s lawyers said she will testify in person at the trial starting Monday and scheduled to run through May 23

Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth
She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room
She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft
Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured
adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children
According to her testimony and that of the concierge
at least one of the suspects had a handgun
The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery
estimated to be worth more than US$6 million (NZ$10 million)
Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered
Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime
is one of two suspected robbers who allegedly entered the apartment
his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian
who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station
The second robber said he tied up the concierge with cables but did not go up to Kardashian’s apartment
said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian
but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime
Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision
he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian
is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat
although he was filmed by CCTV cameras and numerous telephone contacts with the other co-defendants show his involvement
The other defendants are suspected of providing information about Kardashian’s presence in the apartment
Others are accused of playing a role in the resale of the jewellery in Antwerp

Hamilton Boys' High at the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament
Hamilton Boys’ High title ambitions at the 2025 Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament in Fukuoka
Japan were dented by a second-round 32-29 pool play loss to Gose Industrial High (Japan)
Hamilton’s loss was evidence of the progress Japan has made in youth rugby in recent years
and Gose snatched the win with a try from a rolling maul in the last play of the game
Earlier Gose made a bright start and led 10-0 before Hamilton halfback Lachie Ross chimed in with three tries from inspired moves
pulled a try back to reduce Hamilton’s halftime lead to 19-15
Botherway kicked a penalty just after halftime and Hamilton then appeared to have established a comfortable margin when prop Liam Van Der Heyden burst through to extend the lead to 29-15
But two tries to Gose narrowed the gap to 29-27 and with time up on the clock
they mauled their way over in the corner for the narrow win
Hamilton coach Cam Moorby said the loss was difficult to digest
“Gose are a very good team with a strong forward pack and a very accurate first-five who kept us pinned in our half at critical moments,” he said
“A lack in discipline on our behalf combined with the language barrier caused a breakdown in communication on some law interpretations and ultimately we didn’t adjust well enough
particularly around the ruck and maul area
“We’ve taken a pretty hard lesson and will be better for it come Thursday.”
Moorby said: “All we can do is control our own build up
That’s one benefit of these short turnarounds
You get the opportunity to put disappointment behind you pretty quickly
Tokai University Sagami were beaten 19-14 by Nagasaki Hokuyodai High and 28-25 by Gose on Tuesday
Howick College beat Reitaku High School (Japan) 31-14 and Hong Kong China Junior Dragons 35-7
but lost 17-0 to Kanto Gakuin Mutsuura High (Japan) and Fukuoka Rugby Football Club 27-5
Already not where they wanted to be running at the Miami Grand Prix
Ferrari team orders impacting Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc did little to improve the mood
However, Leclerc has made it clear that he has “no bad feelings” towards Hamilton after the Miami Grand Prix
the Ferrari drivers swapped around twice without success on the way to a P7 finish for Leclerc and Hamilton P8
Additional reporting by Elizabeth Blackstock
Ferrari split strategies for the Miami Grand Prix
But after the sole round of pit stops were complete
Hamilton came up behind Leclerc on theoretically the faster tyre
but was left frustrated when Ferrari told him to hold position
Hamilton continued to argue his case and Ferrari did a U-turn
but with Hamilton unable to ditch his team-mate
then Leclerc felt like he was being held up
and asked to be let back through by Hamilton
Leclerc crossed the line 1.5 seconds behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli in P7
as Hamilton narrowly held on to P8 under late pressure from Carlos Sainz in the Williams
which included being speared by Sainz at Turn 17 on the last lap
while Leclerc is frustrated over a lack of pace in the Ferrari – McLaren
Red Bull and Mercedes having been quicker in Miami – he made it clear than none of that frustration was directed towards Hamilton
whether he considered letting Hamilton through before Ferrari asked
he would struggle a bit more to go to the end than me
“But I understand as well that he wanted to try and do something different
I would have done the same thing if I was him
and trying to be a bit more aggressive with the medium tyres
“There’s no bad feelings with Lewis
I understand that he wants to try and optimise as much as I want to try and optimise the car potential
Asked if he had the chance to speak with Hamilton after the race
so we don’t have enough time to really speak.”

The frustration of the Ferrari drivers played out over team radio at times during the race, that especially true for Hamilton
And Leclerc agreed with the suggestion that this is a consequence from the lack of performance
He added: “There’s the frustration already that I was fighting for P8 at the time
the radio doesn’t always… In this case
probably… But the radio is not always the real picture.”

From left to right: The evolution of NES in Hamilton
NZME’s On The Up is a national campaign showcasing amazing stories of inspiration
Malisha Kumar talks to the owners and the founder of New Zealand-made fashion label NES
that is still going strong after 25 years in business
It was the year 2000, on an overcast morning in May, when Vanessa Herbert (nee Nieper) launched her first fashion label and clothing store in Hamilton
NES is still going strong and preparing for a new chapter
Herbert said she always had a passion for fashion, sewing her own clothes and sketching designs while working as a travel agent at Flight Centre in Auckland
but she didn’t think that she could turn it into a career
“I showed her a design of mine and Marcia said to me ‘Why are you selling travel? You should be making clothes‘,” Herbert said
Looking back she vividly remembers especially two designs: a sleeveless fleece vest with a high neck and a zip and a matching fleece skirt
Herbert said she had a good thought about her words and decided to take the plunge
She sold her car to get money to start up her business and attended a pattern-making course in Hamilton
The name Dolly Bird is a British slang word for a “fashionable and attractive young girl”, and when Herbert first started designing
Herbert said her designs were inspired by nature - and “people-watching”
“[I was] trying to replicate the colours and textures into clothing.”
The first item sold in the shop was a pair of “slinky jeans” - popular skin-tight jeans with a flare from the knee
Herbert worked hard to get her label off the ground - sewing clothes at night and working in the shop during the day
She said this hard work and organisation were key to her never giving up
she said the true secret behind the label still going strong after such a long time was “pure passion”
I took note of what people were wearing ..
I always had a notepad on me for sketching at all times.”
She changed the name of the label and boutique to NES after over 10 years in business to be more inclusive of other styles
Herbert said it had always been her goal to clock up 20 years in the industry before retiring
she felt the time was right to hand over the reins
Herbert sold the business to Hamiltonian Kate Harris
and said she was “absolutely proud” to see her boutique was still going strong after 25 years
Harris said she was “overwhelmed by the legacy of NES”
She remembers being found in her grandmother’s closet as a kid
Harris said she had been a fashion designer for 20 years
following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother who had often made her clothes
“There is always a childhood memory of sewing machines on the dining room table
and choosing our fabric for our winter pyjamas.”
She said she also loved how “an outfit can transform who you are”
but clothing allowed her to be an extrovert and “express myself through clothes”
In celebration of turning 25, Harris welcomed Waikato designer Robyn Stinson to NES to “continue and protect the legacy” of the business
Stinson, 42, debuted at NZ Fashion Week in 2006 before opening a clothing store in Cambridge
She just returned to the fashion industry after doing several other designing stints
and running Black Shepherd Apiaries with her husband
Harris said she had big plans for the future of NES
but was tight-lipped on specifics - “Watch this space.”
“I’m excited for a ‘Kate and Robyn spin’ on NES and a new in-house label.”
Their ultimate goal was to create “hardworking wardrobe pieces that are simple

Lewis Hamilton has reflected on the tense radio messages he made during the Miami Grand Prix
conceding that "I'm sure people didn't like certain comments" but emphasizing that they were said during a "frustrating" moment as Ferrari tried to maximise a lacklustre race
The seven-time World Champion endured a difficult weekend in Miami as he was consigned to a 12th-place starting spot on the grid and was left battling Esteban Ocon on the fringes of the top-10 with the hard compound tyre in the early stages of the race

A mid-race Virtual Safety Car transformed his race
as it allowed the Briton to make a pit stop without losing as much time compared with those ahead and he closed on team mate Charles Leclerc and the Williams of Carlos Sainz
He moved up a spot as Leclerc passed Sainz at Turn 1
and with the softer medium tyre looked quicker than his team mate and asked his Ferrari engineer to be allowed ahead
But it took several laps before Ferrari asked Leclerc to cede the spot having initially told both drivers to hold position
prompting several irate messages from Hamilton including one that suggested they could "have a tea break while you're at it"
Hamilton clarified that his comments were made in the heat of the moment and that his remarks would be discussed amongst the team
"I lost a lot of time behind Charles and in that moment for sure I was like
come on let's make a concise decision really quick
"I'm sure people didn't like certain comments but you've got to understand it was frustrating
people say way worse things than what I say
It was more sarcastic than anything and I'm not frustrated now
we'll have discussions and we'll keep pushing."
He added: "Let's not get emotional about it
Hamilton was unable to pull away from his team mate who was able to stay within DRS range and also began to complain about dirty air from following
Hamilton eventually finished eighth after making contact with Sainz on the last lap as the Williams driver made a late lunge into the final hairpin
"For us to be battling them and struggling to beat them [Williams] just shows that we have a lot of performance to find," Hamilton said

"We're lacking performance in the car but I think we know where we are losing it
We've got some improvements to make to the car before we can unlock that performance but we won't give up
Leclerc was only able to finish one place higher in seventh
nearly a minute behind race winner Oscar Piastri during a race which saw only two brief Virtual Safety Cars as Ferrari's race pace was laid bare
we need to do better and we are in a difficult situation at the moment
I just hope we can turn that situation around as soon as possible."

25-storey dining and hotel complex will help to solve Hamilton's visitor accommodation shortage and transform the city
Hamilton City Council has sold a prime downtown riverfront site on Victoria Street to Templeton Group
A council feasibility study showed the city needs 497 additional hotel rooms in the next five years just to keep up with demand
Waikato professor of environmental planning Iain White said big cities should have major events and vibrant downtowns
and it will probably overtake Wellington as a bigger city in the next few decades," he said
like the one planned by Templeton Group for Victoria Street
The development could see a tiered 25-storey tower featuring hotel accommodation
Hamilton City Council had sold several properties to Templeton Group for the development
while retaining neighbouring land to develop into a public park
The land the council was retaining bordered the existing park
Mayor Paula Southgate said the final design was still to be determined but one thing was for sure - it would be big
But what that does is change the landscape
but gives 20+ floors to really engage with the riverside," she said
Iain White said residents should not be worried about a changing city skyline
and it may just be a sign of things to come
we should be having land use which is more intensive in our core
in front of where the hotel tower would be built
"I think any work in the CBD is going to be good for future work and development within the city," said one local
The lack of places for visitors to stay had not gone unnoticed with one local saying they had struggled to house visitors locally
"When we've had people try and come for parties or something
if you want to stay local there's nothing around here really
Templeton Group's founder Nigel McKenna said he wanted the development to open up and bring activity to the riverfront
"We anticipate the new tower will in time become the epicentre of Hamilton's central city with a tangible visual connection to the river against a backdrop of premium dining
Our proposal makes full use of the site and will contribute to Hamilton's transformation to a big city," he said
Mayor Paula Southgate said now the sale had been approved things would happen quite quickly
it's not a small building so it will take a number of years to complete but yes
they are ready to press go on the button," she said
Templeton Group will now finalise preliminary designs
with plans to lodge resource consent applications for the tower development by the end of the year

Lewis Hamilton was not angry with Riccardo Adami during the Miami GP but he wants his race engineer to be more decisive in making crucial calls
Hamilton’s radio communications with Adami have made headlines as the Briton gave voice his frustrations as he sat behind his team-mate Charles Leclerc
Hamilton felt that he was faster than the Monegasque driver and that Ferrari were dithering in swapping positions
unlike in China when he was the one who made the call to let Leclerc through
It led to several sarcastic comments from the Briton’s side
as he told Adami to take a “tea break” before
having swapped with Leclerc but then swapped back
asking if Adami also wanted him to let Carlos Sainz through
Leclerc and Hamilton swapped positions but with Hamlton unable to chase down Antonelli
he was told to give the position back to Leclerc
The radio messages raised eyebrows in the paddock as Hamilton’s cutting comments to Adami are not in keeping with how he would communicate with his long-time Mercedes race engineer Peter Bonnington
Put to him that his comments came across as ‘quite fiesty’ and that no one ‘recalled’ him speaking to Bono like that
Pressed on his ‘tea break’ jab
He added: “I definitely have said that to Shovlin or Bono once before.”

it did see Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur pay him a visit after the race
Hamilton was quick to shut down any comment the Frenchman may have made as he insists it was “sarcasm” more than anything else
“Fred came to my room,” Hamilton revealed
“I just put my hand on his shoulder and was like
“I could have said way worse things on the radio
You hear some of the things others have said in the past
you’ve got to understand we’re under a huge amount of pressure within the car
You’re never going to get the most peaceful messages coming through in the heat of the battle
telling the broadcaster: “In that moment
“Sure people didn’t like certain comments
but I mean you got to understand it’s frustrating
we’ll have discussions and we’ll keep pushing.”
Hamilton finished the Grand Prix in eighth place and left Miami having scored 10 points in total. He, however, remains P7 in the Drivers’ standings where he trails Oscar Piastri by 90 points

We’re working as hard as we can to shorten that but it could be longer
With the Sprint making its return in Miami
Hamilton took a moment to reflect on whether this could be a positive factor for him
given his success in the first 100km dash of the season in Shanghai in which he won from P1 on the grid
“Can’t really explain it too much,” the 40-year-old answered when quizzed on why the performance had seemingly been stronger in the Sprint than during a race

“In a Sprint race obviously there’s not a huge amount of changes you can make; I think the one thing to take from it is that we didn’t make a lot of changes going from P1 to Quali

Fonterra's Canpac factory in Hamilton
Dairy giant Fonterra has today announced it plans to close its Hamilton canning and packaging facility in July
Fonterra said the closure of the Canpac site followed the co-operative’s decision to focus on higher value ingredients
such as advanced proteins and medical nutrition
The site is currently used to blend and package milk powders
Fonterra chief financial officer Anna Palairet said low product volumes and increasing complexities in production had created challenging economic conditions for the facility
“It’s been a tough day for all the team at the site
Making decisions like this is never easy,” Palairet said
“Our strategy is about creating end-to-end value and growing total returns for our farmer shareholders
We believe the best way to achieve this is to focus on our strengths and scale in ingredients and foodservice
and we are prioritising our investment on the parts of our operations that are better suited to this.”
Fonterra said it would work through a consultation process
including exploring potential redeployment opportunities for staff before operations are planned to come to an end on July 31
“We are committed to supporting our employees as we work through the next steps,” Palairet said
Canpac is Fonterra’s largest secondary packager of milk powders and nutritional products
The site has state-of-the-art product-blending facilities
can-filling lines and sachet packing machines
Fonterra said Canpac currently packed up to 4000 metric tons of powders a year
less than 1% of the co-op’s total product volume
Fonterra said it would progress with the divestment of its consumer business
Its consumer products business includes household-name brands such as Anchor
representing about $3.4 billion of invested capital
Fonterra said it was actively undertaking a dual-track process
pursuing both a trade sale and initial public offering (IPO) as potential divestment options
The consumer arm has been named Mainland Group and market expectations are for proceeds from the sale to be around $2.5 billion to $3b
Australian media have reported private equity firms and strategic suitors lodged bids for Mainland
The Australian’s DataRoom said bidders included France’s dairy giant Lactalis
It said Swiss investment bank UBS could also be jointly advising Bega
which has a market cap of A$1.6b ($1.720b)
Bega is an Australian diversified food and drinks company with whom Fonterra has long had a commercial relationship
In its decision the New South Wales Supreme Court said it did not have jurisdiction to make the declarations sought
Fonterra said after the ruling that its plans to divest Mainland were unchanged

“We are asking them to let the team go
It’s never easy and I didn’t see another team to do it today
“That’s why we took the responsibility to do it because it’s the policy to the team
“We are racing for Ferrari first and honestly I think as a team we did a good job.”
Hamilton added that he told his boss to calm down during their exchange

“You’ve got to understand we’re under a huge amount of pressure within the car

There were contrasting emotions at Ferrari after an eventful Sprint at the Miami Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton climb from P7 to P3 thanks to a well-timed strategy call
while Charles Leclerc was forced to watch on following a crash en route to the grid prior to the event getting underway
Heavy rain had fallen at the Miami International Autodrome ahead of the 100km dash, resulting in Leclerc sliding into the walls before the action had started
The conditions subsequently triggered a red flag after the initial formation lap

With the track increasingly drying when the event eventually got going
Hamilton was amongst the first to make a pit stop to switch from intermediate to slick tyres – a move that paid off as the seven-time World Champion made gains
While various incidents played out across the final laps – with Max Verstappen dropping down the order owing to a 10-second time penalty for an unsafe release
while a late Safety Car was called following a crash for Fernando Alonso – Hamilton ultimately took third behind the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
a result he was delighted with after some struggles during the first races of the campaign
I’m so happy with that,” the 40-year-old said
“It’s been a tough year so far but to have… I never thought it was going to rain in Miami
It’s the first time we’ve all been on track in the wet here and what a race it provided us
Reflecting further on the dramatic Sprint – and his decision to pit earlier than some of his rivals – Hamilton continued: “I really did struggle on the inters

2025 Miami GP Sprint: Leclerc crashes out on wet track on his way to the grid

but on the other hand these things shouldn’t happen

allegedly clocked up numerous personal expenses to a company account for items including weedkiller
A businessman is alleged to have stolen $111,000 in company funds to help pay off a personal loan and buy weed killer
a toastie machine maker and Hush Puppies shoes
The 73-year-old held a senior position in the Hamilton finance company he helped set up
Now, he is on trial in the Hamilton District Court defending three charges each of theft by a person in a special relationship and of obtaining by deception between 2015 and 2018
whose name and identifying details are suppressed
is alleged to have unlawfully obtained $111,079.80
He is accused of defrauding the company by writing out and banking “cash” cheques
It is alleged he failed to keep any proper record of the money he allegedly took and instead kept Post-it notes stuck to his computer
“I’m simply carrying the can for a poorly governed company.”
The man said a “disconnect” had developed between himself and the board of directors
Crown solicitor Tom Sutcliffe said the complainant company was the brainchild of the defendant
He had presented the company idea to others
for which the defendant ran the day-to-day operations
dealt mostly in small loans of $10,000 or less
The man was given “full control and signing authority” of the company bank account and could write cheques without the need for a co-signatory
Sutcliffe said there was a “great deal of trust placed in [the defendant] by the board of directors
but [he] was not given free rein to do whatever he wanted”
“He was still accountable and obliged to report to them.”
the customer was charged a $600 broker fee
“It makes perfect sense,” Sutcliffe told the jury
“You can’t charge somebody for a service that’s not provided
the Crown alleged the man charged the $600 when a registered broker wasn’t used
Sutcliffe alleged that it occurred 99 times and totalled $55,190
“You will hear from the director of the company that they were unaware that this was happening
“The practice was illegal because the company was not authorised to practise and charge broker fees
It was also dishonest because people were charged for services that were not provided.”
None of those fees were processed through the company bank
“You will also hear there was no formal record kept of where these funds went.”
that would allow these payments to be traced
is an excuse to justify where this money went.”
The defendant was alleged to have told investigators that he kept the payments on “sticky notes” on his computer
he’d adjust the sticky note before eventually discarding it
the defendant allegedly approached a broker and told him the company was now making it compulsory for the broker fee to be paid
He’s alleged to have told the broker that any customer who didn’t have a broker would be referred to him
and the $600 fee would be split between the respective companies
The broker would be made to sign the appropriate paperwork
whether he had dealt with the client or not
The $600 fee would be paid with a cash cheque
the company’s board of directors was unaware that the change had been made
“The [directors] had no idea that this practice was going on ..
you will also hear that the half share of the fee never showed up in the company accounts at all,” Sutcliffe said
were supposed to be signed by the broker but never were
The defendant also took out a legitimate personal loan
Sutcliffe claimed the man began using it as a form of revolving credit
the man was alleged to have said that at times he’d paid more against the loan than required
so he was entitled to “top it up by paying himself more money without getting approval by the board”
“He just paid himself more because he was in charge of the account
like a revolving credit without approval from the board
but you can’t use the company account as your personal account
“You can imagine that the board of directors would be quite surprised that money is being charged out by the company but coming back into the loan account for [the defendant].”
A forensic accountant also discovered the man had allegedly clocked up expenses for personal items
The trial is set down for eight days but Judge Noel Cocurullo told the jury to expect it to go into a third week

Lewis Hamilton's radio messages with race engineer Riccardo Adami grabbed much attention in Miami; however
Lewis Hamilton has addressed his tense Ferrari radio conversations during the Miami Grand Prix
by downplaying the severity of them and describing his messages as "sarcastic"
The seven-time world champion started the sixth round of the season from a disappointing 12th on the grid
but elevated into the top 10 after pitting during a virtual safety car.
Hamilton had remarkable pace on the medium compound
helping him quickly catch team-mate Charles Leclerc for sixth
Hamilton was eager to be allowed past, although Ferrari initially rejected the idea. It triggered some heated radio back-and-forths
he then had to return the position in the final laps at the Miami International Autodrome
yet the Briton has stressed that his radio discussions were not bad
I really enjoyed the race," Hamilton told Sky F1
we knew it was going to be difficult today
"We've lost some performance over the past
and we're just waiting for a fix to regain some of it
So for us to be at the back of the top 10 is definitely not easy for the whole team.

Constraints on the wastewater network in parts of Hamilton are limiting development in some suburbs
but significant infrastructure investment is enabling it in others
a report produced for Council’s upcoming Strategic Growth and District Plan Committee shows
The report for the 8 April meeting highlights the challenges Council is facing to increase network capacity to meet growth
and meet obligations to protect the Waikato River.
The report indicates capacity could increase if a proposal to form a Council-Controlled Organisation with Waikato District Council for water goes ahead
Its greater borrowing power would enable critical infrastructure investment to take place
with a final decision expected in June.
Council has strategically invested in priority areas for growth – greenfield areas
and the central city and surrounding area – as identified in the 2023 Hamilton Urban Growth Strategy
Plan Change 12 and the 2024-2034 Long-Term Plan.
A significant $1 billion investment in Hamilton's wastewater network is funded over the next 10 years as part of Council’s current Long-Term Plan
This includes a $500 million upgrade of the city’s only wastewater treatment plant in Pukete
to support 15+ years of projected growth.
“We can’t grow everywhere at once,” said General Manager of Infrastructure and Assets
“Growing fast presents challenges and while we have made significant investment into our waters infrastructure
There are projects funded and planned to increase capacity and enable development in existing suburbs
but we can’t do it all at once,” said Parsons.
Council’s decision on water reform and the proposed CCO would change this outlook
While it would take time to establish a joint waters company
the benefits include having greater purchasing power
and being able to build and upgrade infrastructure faster
and spread costs fairly.
Unfunded network improvements to support infill development in areas such as Enderley/Fairfield form part of the proposed Waters CCO Enhanced Investment Programme
This enhanced programme aims to provide additional investment in the wastewater system and support growth from 2028 onward.
Chair of the Strategic Growth and District Plan Committee Sarah Thomson said it was essential to get an understanding of the issue while water reform is on the table.
“This report provides an opportunity to explore what levers we have as Elected Members to relieve some of this pressure.
“We want to welcome development in Hamilton
we want to make sure housing keeps up with population growth
It’s critical going forward that we can provide greater clarity around which areas will be prioritised for infrastructure to enable housing and when.
“Both this report and the one that follows it will help inform the direction and recommendations to the proposed Council-controlled organisation”
Council staff are working on a public-facing wastewater capacity viewer, expected to be available soon. This viewer will provide a more detailed view of capacity-enabled areas for development, than the list of constraints currently on the website.
A second wastewater capacity report will be developed and brought to Council
which will respond to the feedback from Elected Members in April
and provide options for consideration.
