Lincoln lived from 1831 to 1837 views a hole in the roof of the carding mill where Lincoln accidentally spent half-a-dozen years in the 1830s perhaps did as much to prepare him to be the Union-saving 16th president as any other aspect of his humble yet remarkable life Volunteers in period clothing provide historical demonstrations for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year at the site now part of a state park over 200 miles (330 kilometers) southwest of Chicago But long-neglected maintenance has taken a toll on the setting which was re-created by a federal public works program in the 1930s during the Great Depression It took a dedicated volunteer and state lawmakers’ advocacy this spring to secure state money to begin rehabbing the site a clean-shaven 22-year-old with the barest of formal schooling had set out in 1831 to haul freight down the Mississippi River to New Orleans when he snagged his flatboat on the Sangamon River dam at New Salem I really firmly believe we’d be two countries.” Lincoln freed the boat and continued to New Orleans but returned to take up residence in the village just northwest of the capitol Lincoln encountered the religious and the atheist was offered a job as surveyor and thus taught himself geometry and by association began practicing law and lost his first political race but came back to win The drive shaft of the rebuilt gristmill fell out of the structure’s floor following a 2016 flood It’s hard to get to it anyway because a pedestrian walkway over Illinois Route 97 is closed grew this winter to the size of a refrigerator and half the Illinois Department of Natural Resources It should be enough to stabilize structures and make some headway but McClure said no one has inventoried problems or priced out remedies Natural Resources officials did not respond to emailed questions New Salem withered shortly after Lincoln’s 1837 departure as residents picked up and moved when many transplanted their structures in the new county seat of Petersburg one of the best-preserved buildings is New Salem’s lone original: the Onstott Cooper Shop Henry Onstott lent the auger Lincoln used to drain his swamped flatboat and ease it over the dam The barrel-maker moved his shop to Petersburg in 1840 though it has since returned to its original spot New Salem was a cow pasture with impressions marking erstwhile foundations Media mogul and presidential hopeful William Randolph Hearst visited then bought the property and donated it to the New Salem Chautauqua It became a state park in 1918 and private donations paid for some reconstructed cabins with many more added during the 1930s by the New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps Budget shortfalls have hampered maintenance Financial troubles closed all state parks for five months in the late 2000s Advocates believe New Salem hasn’t seen major improvements since the 1970s “This is Lincoln’s alma mater,” Gillmore-Wolter said McKinley hit Britain with tariffs and Nixon People weren’t just looking at themselves; they were also looking at others, especially as technological advancements increased the circulation of photographs. Whereas the daguerreotype produced a one-off image, printing photographs on paper from negatives extended the reach of images infinitely beyond the original and improved printing techniques helped put ever more inked engravings of photographs in popular publications Photographs and photographic images were everywhere even an 11-year-old knew instinctively how to look that in this new age everyone must become their “own caricaturist,” the beard was not a bad prop uttered the most haunting words ever said by an American president bearded face was first and foremost a product of the anxious new realities of the photographic age Lincoln appeared not awkward and gangly but commanding and dignified the image circulated in different formats and engraved variations After careful consideration of the pictures of Lincoln on the buttons they were wearing they concluded that he would look much better with a beard to bolster his face as well as a standing collar to shorten his neck “should be the best looking as well as the best of the rival candidates.” Lincoln had come into his face—the one that would be regularly and repeatedly seen in pictures through the Civil War and beyond “it would not be wise or tasteful to print.” Hawthorne complied “What a terrible thing,” he complained sardonically “to try to let off a little bit of truth into this miserable humbug of a world.” The truth that Hawthorne wanted to express—that Lincoln’s looks were redeemed by his kindness and sagacity—is visible in one of the president’s last portraits. Taken by Alexander Gardner in February 1865, it is a close-up You can see the strain of his presidency in every line in his face but out of the shadows rises a slight smile The same hollowness Grace Bedell saw is there in his cheeks If there’s one word that’s defined 2025 so far the tariff threat from the White House has everyone shook up and what do people do when fear of shortages and higher prices looms April seems like a banner month for new car sales and the big winner so far might be the brand your grandparents drive Mercedes-Benz has caused some controversy in its charging strategy for the CLA EV Ram is bringing back a sensible trim of its half-ton pickup truck and Jeep is hitting pause on Gladiator production April was a weird sales month for new cars in America With an unusual tariff strategy threatening to hike the costs of everything automotive from repairs to new cars to used cars and I bought a BMW 335i on a whim at the beginning of the month circumstances were a little different there but uncertainty in the market certainly helped me sleep at night after blowing that sort of dough in one go Honda and Acura posted some significant increases the former up 16.6 percent to 123,637 sales and the latter up 33 percent to 13,019 units it’s pretty good to be Mazda right now posting a 21 percent sales increase to 37,660 units Hyundai saw sales increase by 18.8 percent to 81,503 units Kia saw a 13.8 percent increase to 74,805 units sold and Genesis is up 14.5 percent to 6,307 units sold and that rounds out reporting car brands from Asia Here’s a contrast from two automakers that used to be joined at the hip: Buoyed by hot models like Broncos and Mavericks Ford posted a big 15.1 percent sales increase while Volvo largely stayed the course reporting a more modest 5.2 percent sales increase to 11,160 units The biggest winner in all of this tariff fracas so far looks to be Lincoln with the brand posting a 40 percent month-over-month jump in sales to 11,615 units it’s actually positioned well for dealing with potential tariffs It also helps that Lincoln had 127 days of inventory heading into April so people looking to panic buy could just walk onto a Lincoln lot and make a choice I wouldn’t expect to see record high cars sales this year While some of the sales gains can be attributed to panic-buying a portion of them are likely consumers moving up their new vehicle timelines many of these consumers would’ve bought cars this year anyway so sales in April could have effectively stolen from later months Words from industry insiders give some credence to this hunch. Dave Christ, head of the Toyota division in America told Automotive News “The first couple days in April was a frenzy It could be we pulled forward all the business that was there because that frenzied pace is not a frenzy anymore.” With a claimed consumer slow-down to more normal levels coupled with the yet-to-be-seen full effects of auto tariffs it wouldn’t be surprising if 2025 balances out to near-normal or below-normal new vehicle sales on the whole meaning if you’re looking to buy a new car soon it’s not a bad idea to hop on non-tariff-impacted inventory now as affordability may be changing Launching a new EV on an 800-volt architecture is fantastic, because it means really fast charging times on a 350 kW charger. However, Wards Auto reports that in certain markets the new Mercedes-Benz CLA EV only has an 800-volt architecture most older DC fast chargers are based around a 400-volt architecture as kW in DC is equal to amps times voltage divided by 1,000 and running higher amperage is how Tesla optimizes their 400-volt DC fast chargers Most vehicles with 800-volt architectures use DC-to-DC voltage boosters or split battery pack strategies to work with 400-volt fast chargers but that’s not what’s happening with the electric CLA in Germany as the CLA configurator in those markets displays the following warning: Please note that charging at 400V charging stations is not possible they are not shown in the navigation system Unsurprisingly, this new has resulted in mixed reactions on social media, with posters in the German Elektroautos subreddit raising some good points Some note that 400-volt stations are rare around them while some raise the good point that the CLA is an entry-level EV for Mercedes-Benz and this limitation in charging station compatibility could sharpen the EV learning curve for those coming from combustion-powered cars 800-volt-compatible DC fast chargers will be the universal minimum so it’s quite possible Mercedes-Benz jumped the gun with the CLA EV equipment specifications in European markets don’t necessarily translate to North America; it would be a miss if the eventual U.S.-market model doesn’t offer compatibility with older chargers with consumers already stretched on new vehicle pricing now’s a good time to bring some affordable trims back into the mix a base-model half-ton pickup truck with alloy wheels and body-color trim For $44,495 including freight for a quad-cab or $47,245 for a crew cab and enough monochromatic trim to look like a more expensive truck than it is and the two big ones to watch out for are four-wheel-drive and the 420-horsepower Hurricane turbocharged inline-six The former is a $2,095 option and the latter adds $1,695 to the price tag and I’d expect most in-stock models to feature at least four-wheel-drive paired with the $995 Black Express package it seems in the right price bracket to compete with the similar-in-spirit Ford F-150 STX and it’s the sort of trim Ram needs after the rapid Trimflation of the Carlos Tavares era The Jeep Gladiator pickup truck is one of those vehicles that’s not objectively great at anything The bed isn’t as practical as you get on a Tacoma or Colorado it’s not as capable off-road as a Wrangler since it’s so dang long and it’s no longer available with a manual transmission yet there’s something fun about a convertible pickup truck Unfortunately, if you want to make a fun choice and go with a Gladiator, you might want to do so soon. The Detroit News reports that the south plant in the Toledo complex the line on which Jeep’s truck is built the firm is looking to “align parts inventory with demand,” which makes sense considering leftover 2024 model year Gladiators are still on dealer lots into the second quarter of 2025 It’s the latest in several Stellantis production pauses and it’s likely to have a brief but noticeable effect on suppliers While some may be building up parts supply Did you think about buying a car last month Google News MSN News Apple News+ particularly appreciate how much you’ve written about Miatas this calendar year so far Pulled the trigger on a Maverick hybrid AWD with the 4k tow package but at 120,000 miles it’s out of warranty and starting to show some quirks Plus it’s not really up to towing even my very light Crosley hobby car and this particular dealership provides a free 20-year With Ford’s employee pricing response to the stupid tariff war “Liquor stores do record business as prohibition approaches!” Seeing those prices next to the words “base model pick-up truck” had me actually contorting my face in disgust I thought about buying a new Tacoma or Colorado as my needs for a truck have been increasing but looking at our budget decided on a 20 year old Avalanche instead but it’s very cool and it makes me smile The economy is about to turn into a nightmare so I would not be trading in or selling almost-new vehicles anytime soon any birthday beyond 25 is going to be closer to 30 than 20 and that will be true for the rest of your life I’m one of those guilty of panic-buying Didn’t want to wait to see if the tariffs would change so I leased a car several months earlier than expected as seven years is a looong time in EV development but you can’t convince me that a budget pickup truck is $45k Obviously I can’t wrap my head around $100k trucks either Approaching 48 myself and I recall when trucks were the cheap option $45,000 for a fucking base model truck???? a base-model half-ton pickup truck with alloy wheels and body-color trim? ” it’s not a true base-model pickup truck “Did you think about buying a car last month,” I have actually been thinking of when I will buy my next vehicle as my daughter will need a vehicle at some point soon after she graduates next year I already discussed with her that it might make sense to just buy my C-Max as it’s an affordable vehicle that is practical and cheap to insure But that’s something that won’t happen before next year So I have been thinking what I would likely get I will be looking at non-American vehicles because “Canada has nothing the USA needs”… My avoidance of American products will continue as long as the current gang of Republicans are running the show in the USA So the leading vehicles up for consideration will likely be the Prius Prime Kia EV6 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and maybe even the Dodge Charger EV (Since Stellantis isn’t an American company and on top of that I may make an exception for a vehicle made by an American company that is built in Canada I can’t wait to use “sharpen the learning curve” as a synonym for screwing someone over I purchased a new vehicle just before the election mostly because I was getting tired of dealing with the Kia service dept near me The RAV4 Prime is possibly worth more than I paid I might sell it while the market’s hot if some great deal comes along that leaves cash in my pocket but that’s the only way I even consider buying right now that puts you that much closer to using the Master Shake line “I am 30 or 40 years old and do not need this!” Personally I’m slightly closer to 50 than to 30 so I have to consider retiring that line soon many of these consumers would’ve bought cars this year anyway If you want a recent example just take a look at the bike industry They sold everything they could build back in 2020 and 2021 then demand absolutely cratered because everyone who might possibly have wanted a bike already bought one A bunch of long-time bike and bike-related companies have gone out of business recently Accurately planning for binge-buying and then no buying is nearly impossible there may be a lot of low mileage lease returns when people start getting laid off and can no longer afford any monthly payment the used market will be higher than before but also full of desirable cars looking to maximize value see also: home exercise equipment and appliances You mean building a massive HQ building based on high short term sales as an exercise bike company may be a bad idea I was really confused by the comment about being closer to 30 than 20 given that I know Matt is over 30 then I realized Matt didn’t write this today and it made more sense for a second I thought to myself “Man Probably a mix of slight panic and relatively good discounted and cheap or free financing The Lincoln buyer is unique pretty much seems to be older people with money they were probably laying in wait for the car market to come to sanity and now all jumping on it neither purchase (vehicle or lottery ticket) is on the horizon 2005 Tacoma is just getting broken in at 200K miles and 2017 Prius is happy as well Newer vehicles have more things to break and are more expensive to repair when they inevitably break A new car is rarely a sound financial decision even with the included warranty covering mantenance costs for the first few years My Tacoma is going to git the big 3-0 next year If you take care of them they are almost a “lifetime” vehicle I was definitely looking at a Chevy Trax or Buick Envista as my first new car to replace my Cruze but even as affordable as they are it just didn’t financially make sense for me to make that move at this time Thankfully parts for the little red Chevy have been relatively cheap when it needs em and so far and it’s been decently reliable for a small town used car-lot “sorry we don’t have any maintenance records or history” purchase This traced his own family’s journey through America’s complicated past, Maryland Governor Wes Moore delivered a powerful message to Lincoln University’s Class of 2025—one about true patriotism and the shoulders we stand on Moore—Maryland’s first Black governor and only the third Black person ever elected governor of any U.S state—wove personal narrative into national purpose urging graduates to embrace a more nuanced vision of what it means to love one’s country At the heart of Moore’s address was the remarkable story of his grandfather, Reverend Doctor James Thomas, a Lincoln University graduate whose journey from “American exile to American patriot” formed the emotional backbone of his message “My grandfather was born in South Carolina the child of Jamaican immigrants new to the United States,” Moore told the graduates he and his parents fled back to Jamaica—chased away by the Ku Klux Klan.” This early trauma—being rejected by his country because of something “that should have been a source of pride not prejudice”—didn’t extinguish James Thomas’s love for America While most of Moore’s extended family vowed never to return to the United States ‘This country would be incomplete without me!'” Moore recalled Delivering the speech at his grandfather’s alma mater made the moment even more personal Moore was shown artifacts from his grandfather’s time at Lincoln—his transcript “I get emotional when I think about that moment of standing in the same spaces that he did,” Moore shared with ESSENCE in an interview after the speech “It serves as an important reminder of what he had to endure… his earliest memories in life were watching this country reject him.” this family history isn’t just a personal story but a powerful lens through which to understand our collective national journey “that in this moment when people are watching what is happening to so many communities when people are watching an assault on our history and an assault on our livelihood I think people also are learning and will continue to learn that we don’t flinch because we’re just built differently.” Moore outlined what he called three lessons he learned about patriotism in his commencement address that challenge simplistic notions of national identity: 1.Patriotism is never passive: “Your love of country will always be tested—in ways both big and small Patriotism is a responsibility of a lifetime.” 2.Loving your country doesn’t mean believing it’s perfect: “Being an American has always come with struggle and sacrifice.” 3.Skepticism about your country is justified: “Loving your country doesn’t mean lying about its history But you should always keep skepticism as your companion noting that patriots “are people who are willing to sacrifice their today for a better tomorrow for others.” He emphasized that patriots understand the “unevenness about this country’s history” without concluding that America is “irredeemable.” Moore positioned today’s America as divided between false extremes: “those who use patriotism as a club to beat others… and those who feel ashamed to bear the flag,” and between “those who think loving America means hating half the people in it…and those who allow cynicism about our nation’s history to obscure their aspirations.” “leaves no room for someone like my grandfather” or for himself—”a boy who felt handcuffs on his wrists when he was just eleven years old because I grew up in a community that was overpoliced… but who now stands before you as the 63rd governor of my state.” The governor challenged the graduating class to embrace a more nuanced perspective: “The hard part is being honest about our flaws—and courageous in addressing them.” Moore drew powerful parallels between Lincoln University’s founding in 1854 during a period of intense national discord “Lincoln was built for a moment like this because it was built in a moment like this,” he told the graduates highlighting how the university was founded at a time when “our nation’s fabric was being tested… and it wasn’t entirely clear if we would end up a true This historical context frames Moore’s call for graduates to be engaged citizens in our current moment of division “I am here today not just because Lincoln University is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in this country,” he said “but because I would not be here without you This school created a way for me… because you created a way for James Thomas Moore emphasized the importance of recognizing patriots in all their diversity He specifically highlighted graduates of different backgrounds including international student Valerie Ottutu from Nigeria who graduated with a computer science degree and secured a position at a Fortune 500 company But she came to the United States because she knew this country would be incomplete without her!” Moore declared in his speech When asked about the importance of highlighting immigrants as patriots “People are too easy to bastardize this term patriotism… The thing I wanted to highlight is that when we talk about patriots my grandfather was maybe the greatest patriot that I’ve ever met.” Moore concluded his address with a powerful charge to the graduates: “Live in such a way… that when you hand off this country to the next generation… your descendants will say back… ‘They understood the assignment.’ That is the most patriotic thing that you can do.” He elaborated on this “assignment” for today’s graduates entering a divided America: “I’m asking them to lean in and I’m asking them to truly be patriots… not in this faux definition of the word A patriot is someone who understands this country’s history but doesn’t use that as an excuse to lean out but they use it as a motivation to lean in.” “I want them to be a part of history,” Moore said of the graduates “I want them to put their fingerprints on a better future this country is incomplete without them.” Despite speculation about a possible presidential run in 2028 Moore told ESSENCE he remains firmly focused on addressing current challenges “Anybody who is spending their time positioning themselves for 2028 is not taking 2025 seriously,” he said firmly “I’m seeing federal workers who are my folks getting laid off I’m seeing how our economy is getting thrown into the wind with these random tariff policies.” The governor emphasized his commitment to his current role: “I’m very focused on making sure that in this time of crisis and in this time of chaos the people of my state know they have a fighter as their governor and they have someone who meets chaos with calm and meets chaos with resolve.” Moore’s message delivered a vision of patriotism that is active honest and inclusive—one that honors the past while committing to a better future you are the living custodians of our nation’s past and the architects of its present,” Moore said “And the relationship you build with this country will help determine our future.” This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License All of EdNC’s content is open source and free to republish Please use the following the area only consisted of a two-way road stretching through the land Considered the baby of the bunch out of five children Frazier also remembers being the only one of her siblings to attend Rock Springs Elementary during the start of desegregation “There weren’t many of us there,” she stated recalling how many of the Black students remained at a school located where a Catholic church currently stands Frazier went on to attend East Lincoln High School (ELHS) the same school where she would ultimately land a teaching role after graduating college Lincoln County has continued to be the place that Frazier calls home  “I’ve always wanted to be a special education teacher,” Frazier shared.  she would often find herself wandering into Jeanie Travis’s class where she was allowed to help out around the classroom or simply play with the students This continued into high school as Frazier accompanied Wanda Reynolds the teacher she eventually replaced at ELHS following Reynolds’ retirement Frazier recalled receiving many inquiries from her father regarding her reason for inviting numerous of her peers to their home It was common for her to extend a welcome particularly to other students who were bullied for their differences.  I did it in the neighborhood — the kids in the neighborhood that I knew that would have problems I was always that nurturer,” she said.  while many kids her age opted to play outside Frazier said that she preferred taking care of her cousin Faced with a condition that prohibited Jimmy Poo from feeding himself or completing many other actions independently although other children were afraid of him having possessed the patience and tolerance necessary to endure having her hair pulled and face sobbed on “I just knew then ‘this is what I’m doing for the rest of my life,’” she expressed Her pursuit to serve students with learning and developmental differences led her to Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Having been raised in a time and place where her classrooms were predominantly white Frazier said that it was impactful to experience “Black people being together” and the culture that is offered at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) “It was the best experience that I’ve ever had in my life,” Frazier said on top of taking 18 credit hours every semester Frazier was extremely immersed in campus life Big Sister and served as president of the Student National Education Association during her senior year Frazier became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Frazier secured a work-study position as a tutor in the athletic department under the late Clarence”Big House” Gaines she worked on the adolescent ward of a behavioral health center working to explore a multitude of interests “You couldn’t get that experience sitting in your dorm,” she asserted Her connection and involvement at WSSU has continued as an alum Frazier proudly shared that since graduating in 1984 her return to Winston-Salem marked the 40th anniversary celebration for her graduating class Frazier initially accepted a teaching position in Virginia becoming a high school teacher with Lincoln County schools she taught a math and English resource course in addition to coaching basketball Once presented with the opportunity to reconnect with her former high school basketball coach she worked for him during his time as principal at East Lincoln Junior High Frazier transitioned with Barkley to East Lincoln High School in the following years where she remained until she first retired in 2014 Her time away from the classroom was short lived. Beginning in 2018, Frazier started tutoring with Lincoln County Schools. In 2021, she was welcomed back full-time at Lincoln Charter as an Exceptional Children teacher Frazier remained on the move through her volunteerism and service in her community It was in her first year at WSSU that she was introduced to the Special Olympics in Forsyth County she was also recruited to be a coach by Karen Leonhardt Frazier took over the coordinator role following Leonhardt’s retirement “A lot of people thought that this was a job but I’ve never been paid to do this,” she explained her experience with the Special Olympics as a volunteer is done sheerly out of love.  This commitment to individuals with special needs meant that she also focused on expanding access and opportunities Camp Love is one initiative used to expose her athletes to different experiences The five-day sports camp allows participants to engage in various activities Frazier offers a three-day music camp to her athletes allowing them to interact with professional musicians the summer camp focuses on incorporating music Frazier shared that both programs have grown over time 50 students participated in the music camp and 70 participated in weeklong Camp Love Frazier stated that they don’t just focus on playing she also prepares students for various public experiences such as learning job skills or teaching them how to communicate their order at restaurants and impact of providing new opportunities to her student athletes Frazier expressed the importance of treating individuals with special needs with dignity understanding that they are capable of learning new things Her one stipulation was that she would only foster kids who had special needs recognizing the difficulty of finding them a placement “That’s just where my heart has been all my life,” she said Frazier stated that what she does isn’t about recognition or compensation but rather about loving people she has been reminded that she wouldn’t make money in her line of work I don’t need your money because I’m already rich.”  Frazier’s 40+ years as an educator and servant leader have landed her much recognition she was recently crowned the 2024 Lincoln County’s “Woman of the Year” for her effort and dedication to her community While Frazier said she felt honored and humbled she asserted that the recognition and accolades won’t change what she does — “taking care of people Derick Lee is a storyteller and associate director of culture and partnerships for EdNC © 2025 EducationNC. the population almost doubling in the last 10 years - and the renewal was desperately needed according to community advocacy group Lincoln Voice "We want it to actually get done because [the council] have been talking about it for so long," spokesperson Denise Carrick said and it was important to keep that feel while ensuring the town continued to be safe and accessible "[The plan] includes things like cycleways through the main town There had been a noticeable rise in crashes this year especially involving intersections and pedestrians It was the main topic in the group's submission on the council's Waikirikiri ki Tua Future Selwyn project which was asking the community to imagine what the district would look like in 50 to 100 years "There's also extra car parking going in [under the renewal plan] which will take cars off the road and make it safer as well," Carrick said The council's executive director of property and infrastructure said the plan had always been produced as a long-term vision "It was acknowledged at the time that it would be some years before the plan would be actioned as the council had already committed to other long-term upgrade projects which would need to be completed first as they had been agreed with the community first," he said the upgrades were scheduled to begin in the 2027/2028 financial year The budget for the original works was approximately $27m "This work was brought forward in the 2024-2034 Long-Term Plan at a budget of approximately $46 million and we are working to begin the first stage of the Gerald Street upgrade in this financial year," Mason said "That sounds like great news if it does actually start this year," Carrick said Further information would be released in the next few months An entire community has been told it'll be evicted - According to Russell S. Rein, field secretary of the Lincoln Highway Association (LHA), you can use the map on the association’s website to retrace the route and even track whether you’re on its first Rein says driving the Lincoln Highway offers a look at how automotive travel evolved over the decades Funding and logistics impacted the original 1913 route Department of Transportation didn’t exist at that time Fisher turned to auto manufacturers and affiliated industries cutting a new road through the country didn’t make sense so Fisher and his newly formed LHA connected existing roads through as many major cities as possible to create a transcontinental route Paint-marked telephone poles let drivers know they were on the new Lincoln Highway, but little else immediately changed. The LHA’s 1916 Official Road Guide called the journey “something of a sporting proposition” and estimated it would take a “pleasure party” about 20-30 days to make the trip from coast to coast they might face rockslides going through mountain passes or get stuck in the mud and have to wait for a horsedrawn wagon to pull them out manager of visitor services at the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor in Pennsylvania travelers had to properly equip themselves with supplies like a shovel for digging out of mud The Official Road Guide also encouraged them to take camp supplies like a 5-gallon milk can for water and Vaseline for gun maintenance and burns the highway could be likened to having your own private jet after flying commercial They could suddenly travel whenever they wanted and could get to their destination in less time as the highway improved He didn’t just want a coast-to-coast highway but an improved one that encouraged people to drive To showcase what interstate highways could be the LHA created “seedling miles” by donating cement to communities and asking them to pave their section adding features like electric lights and roadside art to their paved example the difference between paved and unpaved was obvious Fisher hoped that once drivers experienced concrete roads they’d fund similar construction in their communities The LHA had a slogan for the plan: “Great oaks from little acorns grow; long roads of concrete from seedling miles will spring.” and it quickly earned its nickname Main Street of America for two reasons the highway went through many towns on their main road But the Lincoln Highway also served as the nation’s literal Main Street connecting towns and cities in the same way a community’s main road connected essentials like the store and doctor’s office While many took the Lincoln Highway to get from one coast to the other or to visit one of the newly formed national parks they were just as likely to pack a picnic and go for a Sunday drive Eisenhower didn’t fall into any of these categories crossed the nation on the Lincoln Highway as part of a military convoy Rein says the Army wanted to demonstrate how improved roads could help move men and equipment more efficiently “I’m sure that inspired Eisenhower to have an interstate system when he was president,” he continues Before Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act 1956 an association of state highway and transportation departments adopted a numbered highway system to replace named ones in 1926 but the numbered highways didn’t always correspond to existing named highways As a result the Lincoln Highway became US 30 through the Midwest and US 40 US 50 and other numbered highways elsewhere So drivers could still follow the Lincoln Highway its highway association created 3,000 concrete markers and asked local Boy Scout Troops to place them because the original Lincoln Highway didn’t perfectly align with the new numbered highways Rein believes that replacing the Lincoln Highway with numbered highways and rerouting portions of it led to the the highway’s decline faster-moving highways such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike the Lincoln Highway had begun seeing less traffic As the Lincoln Highway faded into the background of numbered highways, Route 66 rose to prominence and has remained there for the last 100 years (The so-called Mother Road celebrates its centennial in 2026.) Simpson credits the early 1960s TV show Route 66 and the iconic Chuck Berry song “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66,” with its popularity adding that Route 66 is also a little easier to navigate today That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the effort to experience the Lincoln Highway a member of the LHA board of directors representing Nebraska encourages people to get off the interstate and explore the Lincoln Highway “It’s a two-lane road that takes you through rural America,” she says “You’re going through a small town every seven to ten miles past cafes and post offices and historic buildings.” She points to Lincoln Highway-era sights visitors can see while taking the route through Nebraska as examples: a seedling mile in Grand Island a gift shop with a fort-like facade in North Platte a giant covered wagon pulled by statuesque oxen in Kearney and a brick-paved road that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Elkhorn Motorists today can also see the painted telephone poles and concrete markers drivers once followed across the nation on the Lincoln Highway driving the highway is driving through time and he encourages everyone to experience it It drives past unique sights like the coffee pot in Pennsylvania and attractions along the Lincoln Highway have fallen into disrepair and been torn down have fallen victim to fire and other disasters “Why do I want to convince our visitors to see the Lincoln Highway?” he asks referring to the people who visit the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor’s museum in Latrobe Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" love Jacqueline Green at Brisbane’s St John’s Cathedral [a mere 2km from his weekend nuptials] – marking the beginning of one of the sweetest love stories in Australian sporting history “Wally and Jacqui had the traditional church wedding at one of Brisbane’s finest landmarks – and four decades on new bride Lynda wanted the same – complete with all the trimmings,” says the insider “But this time around Lynda was sure it would be bigger and better – she enlisted a team of wedding planners who made sure the reception venue at Old Government House was dressed to impress – it was like a Hollywood production but he did have his close buddy and former teammate Gene Miles as his best man – and fellow Queenslander Paul “Fatty” Vautin was on the guest list The rest of the wedding party of six were Lynda’s clan Townsville millionaire businessman Mark Adams – even Sydney’s boyfriendJack was in the official party Which makes it even more sad that not one of Wally’s kids will feature in the couple’s wedding album.” And while Wally’s first family continue to support each other Jacqui has not just moved on – she’s blossoming “You can be sure she’s not the bitter ex sitting around seething – she’s so happy,” says a close friend “She’s at her best when she’s with family especially the four grandchildren – she’s loving her job but she’s one strong woman – the fact she remained so
