Matthew Milson is back at Norths in the latest step in a unique rugby league journey for the two-time Devils premiership winner
Milson is another standout league product from Tingha
Tingha’s population is less than 1000 but its role of footy graduates is grand – Preston Campbell
Milson has the same quick feet that propelled those four men through long professional careers.
Put it down to the “rabbiting” and the high-stakes touch footy games that were a feature of Milson’s Tingha upbringing with his seven brothers and sisters
Milson and his mates would chase rabbits around Tingha
challenging each other to see how many they could catch
The rabbits were caught by hand and released unharmed
“I used to play every sport when I was growing up and we had some great games of footy in Sapphire Street
“There was always a lot of players there and it was great fun
You had to use your instincts a lot which was a bit like rabbiting
We just had a lot of fun outside doing things.”
Milson was a constant danger in the backline when the Devils surged to premierships in 2021 and 2022 – memorably swatting the ball over the sideline to end the 2021 decider – before spending the last two seasons at Wynnum Manly
winning the club’s best player award in 2023
The proud Wiradjuri-Kamilaroi man has reunited with his premiership coach Rohan Smith at Norths
excited by the chance to continue a career that has reached 77 Hostplus Cup appearances.
“It’s really good being back here with Ro,” Milson said
“He’s really on the players’ level and he is always trying to help players improve to get to the next level
following the path of some of his Devils premiership teammates
Milson had a taste of professional football when he completed a pre-season with the Brisbane Broncos last summer however a hamstring injury prevented him from playing in an NRL trial
Milson’s bright smile is a popular sight at the Devils
where wife Teagan and their children Shiyah
Milson and Teagan moved to Brisbane together after Year 12
Milson works as a community liaison officer in the health industry
“It’s just exciting to be back especially when there are other young families around,” Milson said
“The pre-season has been good and we’re working our way through it and just looking forward to getting the season underway.”

Angola secured a surprising 1-0 victory against Ghana in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Thursday
courtesy of an injury-time goal from substitute Felicio Milson
ended dramatically when the Serbian-based forward capitalised on Ghana’s failure to clear a low cross
slotting the ball past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi in the 93rd minute
who responded by throwing plastic bottles onto the pitch after the final whistle
This result marked Ghana’s first loss at the Baba Yara Stadium since 2000
a significant blow to the four-time African champions
Ghana fielded six Premier League players in their starting XI as they sought redemption following disappointing group-stage exits in the 2022 and 2024 AFCON tournaments
one notable absence was 34-year-old midfielder Andre Ayew
who was left out of the squad by coach Otto Addo due to his current status as a free agent after parting ways with French club Le Havre
the Black Stars struggled to breach Angola’s resolute defence
Ghana’s last AFCON trophy win was in 1982
and this latest setback adds to the pressure on the team
Angola, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFCON before being eliminated by Nigeria, now share the top spot in Group F with Sudan, who secured a 1-0 win over Niger on Wednesday.
Looking ahead to matchday two, Sudan will travel to Angola on Monday, while Ghana will face Niger away on the same day.
Elsewhere, in another surprising result, Burundi triumphed 3-2 against Malawi in Group L, with Mokono Eldhino scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute. Malawi, who twice levelled the match, now face an uphill battle in a group that also includes 2022 champions Senegal and Burkina Faso, who play on Friday.
In Group A, Tunisia’s veteran coach Faouzi Benzarti, in his fifth tenure, had to wait until the 98th minute for Ferjani Sassi to secure a 1-0 win over Madagascar in Rades. Meanwhile, in Group B, Louis Mafouta netted twice as the Central African Republic defeated Lesotho 3-1 in El Jadida, Morocco, due to stadium standards in Bangui.
Ten more qualifiers are set for Friday, featuring heavyweights like Ivory Coast, DR Congo, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Zambia, and Senegal making their tournament debuts.

is still bright green a day after a substance was discovered leaking from a stormwater drain
Authorities said there was no indication the substance is toxic
and it is most likely a fluorescein dye that could have entered the drain 'from thousands of areas'
Locals were left shocked by the appearance of the substance
with one telling a news outlet the water resembled 'green cordial'
Water expert and professor of environmental engineering at the University of Sydney

Dye leak turns water bright green in Sydney Harbour at Kirribilli

The substance believed to be behind the sudden appearance of neon green water in Sydney Harbour is a commonly used product for plumbers – but the culprits remain a mystery
North Sydney Council engineers believe fluorescein
is most likely to blame for the green water that appeared in Kirribilli on Wednesday afternoon
Neon green water was spotted in the harbour at Kirribilli on Wednesday
Firefighters were called to the bay at Milson Park about 3pm after locals spotted the fluorescent green water flowing from a storm drain into the harbour
Fire and Rescue NSW tests have so far shown no indications of toxicity
it’s probably impossible to find where it started – there are probably thousands of points
which lead into the harbour,” superintendent Adam Dewberry said
Firefighters have ruled out nearby construction sites as the cause of the pollution
There’s no odour and no signs of corrosiveness
One line of inquiry is if a prankster is to blame
potentially in a Year 12 muck-up day stunt
A council spokesperson said the sight was “alarming” but council was reassured the bay was free of major pollutants
“Spill socks were placed into the stormwater drain channel to stop further pollution from entering the bay
Sydney Water flushed the drainage system and by 6.40pm the drainage network was clear of the green water,” the spokesperson said
“At this stage our engineers believe the substance is likely to be fluorescein
Fluorescein is a non-toxic substance and breaks down with UV light
The green colour is a feature that makes it easy to trace.”
A resident described the scene to Nine News as “green cordial
like radioactive stuff you see in superhero movies”
Authorities hope Thursday’s deluge will disperse the last of the coloured water and return the bay to its usual hue
Sydney is experiencing widespread rainfall as a cold front moves up from the South Coast
A hazardous surf warning is in place for Sydney
“We expect to see widespread rain across much of eastern NSW … we are looking at a widespread 20 to 40 millimetres [of rain] in these areas today,” senior Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said

An artist's impression of the new healthcare facility to be built on Milson Line
A Manawatū owned and operated healthcare facility is to be built on Milson Line
have announced their plans to lift healthcare capacity by providing the largest healthcare development in Manawatū for a generation
The facility will be on vacant land at 107 Milson Line
The 15,000sq m site is large enough to accommodate about 10,000sq m of new clinical facilities
Central Healthcare chairman Dr Daniel Marshall said
The first stage of the project will include a full radiology suite
The build is expected to take about 24 months and is planned to open in July 2024
has developed a master site plan allowing a two-stage development
will be announced as the project progresses
Architecture HDT's work has been undertaken following careful consultation with Palmerston North City Council to ensure the development fits within the city's plans
Central Healthcare managing director Dr Colin Hutchison said the group
which represents more than 30 senior doctors
looked forward to working in collaboration with existing healthcare providers to help meet the growing demand for healthcare in Manawatū
Discussions were already under way with MidCentral District Health Board and Southern Cross (the co-owners of Crest Hospital) to ensure the new healthcare facility will complement other secondary care facilities in the region
Marshall says Central Healthcare "is the result of a group of senior doctors who together want to improve healthcare facilities and access to quality healthcare for the people of our region now and for the future"
"We started back in March 2020 and over the past two years we have been working to successfully secure local investment and support
"All of the founding doctors have recognised that a barrier to timely healthcare is the lack of specialist healthcare facilities in Manawatū both in the public and private sector where we work," Marshall says
"We believe our new world-class facility will have a hugely positive impact on meeting the growing demand for specialist healthcare in our region
It will bring major benefits for both private patients and those going through the public health system."
Hutchinson said having an elective healthcare facility in Palmerston North will ensure Manawatū is able to attract and retain more specialist doctors
who can work across both the private and public sector

but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser
It was a frustrating display from the home side

It's a logistical lineup as goods are taken from the old Countdown distribution centre in Kelvin Grove to the new one in Milson
Mihaere Dr and Kaimanawa St in Kelvin Grove are a truck spotter's paradise as Countdown moves to its new distribution centre in Milson
Trucks of all hues have been taking goods from the old centre to the new Alderson Dr centre
A Countdown spokesperson said the supermarket company had sold the old Palmerston North distribution centre and was looking forward to settling into the new centre
it will deliver to 55 stores across the North Island and
will move about 450,000 cartons of food and groceries each week - nearly double the Mihaere Dr distribution centre volume
The $100 million distribution centre is as big as four rugby fields at 38,000sq m
and is three times the size of the old centre
The new distribution centre is Countdown's first to be accredited by Green Star
an internationally recognised sustainability rating system for the design
The new facility has energy-efficient lighting
rainwater harvesting and low water and energy use fittings
The new centre is also Countdown's first to have 100 per cent electric manual handling equipment
which is 35 per cent more efficient than traditional lighting
Water-saving taps to reduce use are fitted and there are dedicated EV carparks and chargers for staff
There are rainwater storage tanks to cut down on mains-water consumption; on-site physiotherapist for staff; and a dedicated prayer room
Countdown has four distribution centres in New Zealand - two in Auckland and one in Christchurch
Sydney residents were left stunned when they discovered blood-red water flowing into the harbour near Milson Park in Kirribilli on Monday
Experts are investigating the cause of the vibrant red hue in the bay leading into Sydney Harbour
A North Sydney Council spokesperson confirmed that they were aware of the blood-red water
“Council is aware of the red water flowing into the harbour from Milson Park
and officers have investigated but have not been able to find the source.”
The cause of the colour is likely to be plumbers dye which
is safe and non toxic,” the spokesperson said
The mysterious red water discovered in Sydney’s harbour comes just over two months after the same area was affected by bright green water
authorities were alerted to a “large spill of fluorescent green material” that was traced to a nearby stormwater drain
The bright green colouring was observed in Careening Cove at Milson Park
located near Sydney’s central business district and one of the Prime Minister’s official residences
is often used because its distinctive green colour makes it easy to trace
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry confirmed that the green liquid had entered “our beautiful Sydney Harbour” via the drainage system at Kirribilli
“Because it is such an old, heavily populated area it’s probably impossible to find where it started – there are probably thousands of points, like homes and stormwater drains, which lead into the harbour,” Superintendent Dewberry told Sydney Morning Herald at the time
Sydney Water workers managed to flush the drain by around 6:40 p.m
The NSW Environment Protection Authority is currently investigating the blood-red water
An EPA spokesperson said the substance reported in Careening Cove on Monday appeared to be plumbers’ dye which is commonly used in plumbing/drain testing and dissipates quickly once diluted
The dye has now dissipated and is no longer visible
“Officers from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and North Sydney Council made enquiries into the matter but were unable to find a source for the dye,” the spokesperson said
Anyone concerned about possible water pollution should contact the EPA’s 24/7 Environment Line on 131 555 as soon as possible to ensure their concerns can be investigated promptly

F15 Structural Fire fighting Helmet by Pacific Helmets wins award. Photo/ supplied
Whanganui's Pacific Helmets are gaining global credit for their ground-breaking fire helmet.
Last Friday October 6, for the third year running the design team won the Product Silver Pin at the annual Best Design Awards held in Auckland.
Pacific Helmet research and development manager, Sam Milsom, said it was only fire helmet in the world that allowed the firefighter to put his face mask down completely over his breathing apparatus.
"It's a great prize and we are really proud of it... a great step in the right direction as far as innovation goes," he said.
Mr Milson said it took more than three years to complete the design and make and the helmets went on the market earlier this year.
"We are currently selling them in Australia and hope to sell them in New Zealand soon."
Mr Milson attended the event with business development director Grant Bennett; industrial designer Liam Dewhurst; and visual design and marketing Emma Dewhurst.
More than 1000 people gathered at the awards night, representing companies from Australia, Turkey, China and Japan.
Mr Milson said it was great to be acknowledged by their New Zealand design and manufacturing peers as a leading company for innovation and development.
"You are up there with the likes of Fisher and Paykel, Emirates Team New Zealand ... the big headers really... so it's great to make Whanganui proud."
Designers Institute CEO, Cathy Veninga, said design was a key way to help accelerate growth for a business, a city and a country.
"This year's winners show that there is confidence in our design community and that clients are using design to positive effect."
Fifteen North Island tourism groups have formed an alliance to attract key markets.
Text description provided by the architects. Jonathan Tuckey Design’s new office is the conversion of a derelict pub in West London – dating back to 1884 – into a new studio, and doubles in function as a gallery and lecture theatre. The office can be found in the shadow of the V&A’s Blythe House and around the corner from Olympia and the new Design Museum.
Sitting within an immediate local scene of eclectic Victorian architecture, from the outset we felt it was important to collaborate with this context. Traditionally pubs are places that foster conversations about local issues, and the intention was to extend this to include discussions about cities and their communities. The former pub will continue its function as an ‘urban living room’ but now through exhibitions, talks, and community engagement.
A timber lattice structure forms four walls of shelves that wrap around the upper-level office space; a space for books
The timber walls also become desks that can be quickly converted into additional exhibition space or benches for a ‘theatre-in-the-round’
the pub’s original vaults have been carefully restored to provide further exhibition opportunities for larger objects
lit from above as they would be in an intimate gallery

(KMTV) — Veteran Michael Milson spent the day of remembrance sharing and honoring the meaning behind the red poppy flower
A red poppy flowers is a symbol of sacrifice those that served gave and one veteran spends every Veteran’s Day visiting places like the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial to hand out small poppy flowers to veterans and their families
"It’s a way to remember those who died in combat that didn't make it home," veteran Michael Milson said
The poppy came out of World War I from a poem called "In Flanders Fields" and Milson
spends his veteran days going around handing out a small poppy flower to fellow veterans and families
sharing and honoring the meaning behind the red flower
"For me it's not going out and getting a free breakfast somewhere or having a barbecue with my family,” Milson said
“It's about coming to places like this where I can visit other men like me and remember.”
he stops and shares stories with other veterans along the way
"It usually ends up with a conversation of when you served
what branch what was your job and 'oh yea I was there at a similar time' and 'do you remember such and such 'and we can take what we are feeling in our remembrance and laugh with each other,” he said
Milson said this day allows him to meet with others who have served and experience the bond they all share

Wynnum Manly Seagulls are on their own on top of the Hostplus Cup ladder after being made to fight against a physical Ipswich Jets side at BMD Kougari Oval on Saturday
Matthew Milson was at his electric best in the first half as the Seagulls took a 16-4 lead into the break
producing a moment of brilliance with a remarkable flick pass to put Kurt Falls over for a four-pointer
The Jets failed to capitalise on a number of chances on the Wynnum Manly line in the opening stanza until the dying seconds when Aaron Schoupp gave the side some hope
The home side stayed in the grind longer than Ipswich in the second half and pulled away with three tries in 12 minutes to put the result beyond doubt
Humble Seagulls fullback Matthew Milson said he was lucky have good players around him and praised his forwards for laying the platform for the backs
"We train really hard through the week and the expectations at training
I think that laid the platform for us to come here today (and win)," he said
"I think it's just getting our reps in at training
Milson said there was still plenty to work on despite the 32-point win
"I think we did put ourselves under a bit of pressure in that second half
just a little bit of drop ball and getting them back in the game
And on that flick pass: "That's just blackfulla footy
not really doing anything just backing my ability."
Wynnum Manly coach Mat Head said it was pleasing to see Milson thriving with confidence once again after a hamstring injury caused him to miss part of the preseason
"He's probably started the season slower than he would've liked but he was good today and is starting to build nicely and it's very pleasing to see," he said
"I thought Sefa (Roache-Faimalo) out in the centres was extremely strong and Luke Gale was very good for the 80 minutes
so we had some good contributors out there
Today we probably weren't all over the park like we were last week
but we had some people who stood up and that was pleasing to see."
Head said the scoreline didn't reflect the physical challenge Ipswich laid down and was proud to see his side stick at it in the hard times
'Crossy' (Ipswich Jets coach Ben Cross) and his players came with the right attitude and mentality and from the balcony it looked very physical and the players mentioned that," he said
"Full credit to Ipswich the way they turned up and they're going to win footy games if they play that way
so I'm just proud of my boys with how they withheld what they threw at us and we were able to go 'bang
