A family member of a young girl who was punched in the face at Naenae's new pool while trying to protect her little brother
says the incident could have been avoided if staff intervened earlier
Two fights have been reported in the three months Te Ngaengae Pool has been open
said last Tuesday's altercation arose after the 13-year-old girl told a young boy off for pushing her 10-year-old brother while in line at the pool
The woman said the boy's mother then also got involved in the dispute
She said pool staff did not get involved until late in the altercation
and it could have been avoided if they had intervened when the pushing and shoving began
Last week another pool patron had also told RNZ the lifeguards at Te Ngaengae Pool appeared very young and didn't appear to have the confidence to approach intimidating situations
The woman said she was frustrated by the way police and Hutt City Council
"the parent and youth left before police arrived and there was no way to identify them," while the council said all parties had left before police arrived
She said her family had been the ones to call police after pool staff refused to and the family had filed both a report with police when they arrived as well as an incident report with pool staff
Neither police or council would confirm if the family had filed a report with them
The council said its staff filed an incident report per usual health and safety practice
and reiterated they did not call police as they "did not feel it was necessary."
Police meanwhile said they were unable to provide further details of what occurred when they attended
other than to say their understanding was that the "alleged offenders" left before police arrived
Following the incident the woman said her family had also followed up with an email to Councillor Brady Dyer who said on social media he was investigating the incident
who confirmed they had received that email

A new $68m pool opened in the Wellington suburb of Naenae on Wednesday
five years after the previous pool was closed over seismic concerns
The rebuilt Naenae Olympic Pool Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness contains a 50m Olympic pool
"The closure of the old pool in 2019 hit the Naenae community hard," Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry said
"The pool was an important part of the city and regional aquatic network
but more importantly it was the beating heart of Naenae - a gathering place
a place that supported community wellbeing and welcomed visitors."
the facility is one of Lower Hutt's most significant infrastructure projects
Central government contributed $27m through a partnership with Crown Infrastructure Partners via the government's Infrastructure Reference Group Fund
The new facility recycled and reused 80 percent of the demolition material from the old pool
which saved more than 13,000 tonnes of scrap metal and concrete from going to landfill
It was awarded a 5 Green Star rating for its environmentally sustainable design by the New Zealand Green Building Council
"Te Ngaengae Pool and Fitness is a state-of-the-art
I'm delighted that we have been able to deliver the pool on time and under budget

Police are breath testing people at a cordon in Wainuiomata
near a funeral home where people are gathering for a gang funeral today
About 140 police are ready for a tangi for slain gang member Albert Enoka in the Wellington region as the hunt for the killer continues
The 39-year-old was shot in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae on 10 December
Police have named 28-year-old Wipuhara Kapene as the man wanted for the killing
Dozens of police wearing high vis were stopping cars coming through
and a lots of cars are parked up outside the funeral home
RNZ's reporter on the scene had not seen anyone wearing a gang patch
a local shop owner said it had been quiet morning and there had been no disruption
A procession was expected to depart Wainuiomata late morning headed towards Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Porirua
Kapene - who wears heavy Black Power facial tattoos - is considered to be armed and dangerous
Police say Wipuhara Kapene has strong links to the Wellington district
and also has links to the Eastern district which includes Hawke's Bay Gisborne
Police warned people should expect traffic delays on Tuesday as the body is taken from Wainuiomata in Lower Hutt to Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Porirua during the late morning
Acting Area Commander Inspector Shaun Lingard said officers would be monitoring the funeral and procession to ensure family and mourners could grieve safely and within the law
"We've got approximately 140 staff available for this operation
"I would say that's a reasonably large number of police
but as they say it's better to be prepared."
This included police from outside the Wellington region alongside specialist teams
There would be checkpoints in place to monitor the procession
The procession was likely to be on SH1 and SH2 but may also be on the alternative Haywards Hill Road / SH58 route
Police would take action where needed under the Gangs Act which bans gang insignia in public
and would arrest people and take the patches
This is a very good tool for reducing harm in the community
"So yes there might be significant numbers thrown into this in the next couple of months
but that will get scaled back because we understand the gangs will start to comply."
Police are on the hunt for 28-year-old Wipuhara Kapene
but the police do not believe there is a wider risk to the public
Relatives have paid tribute to Albert "Alby" Enoka as armed officers guard the scene
Those who live near where a man was shot and killed in Lower Hutt say while newcomers to Naenae might be fearful
long time residents are taking it with a grain of salt
Wellington police ended their order for officers to carry guns around the region after the shooting happened on Seddon Street on Tuesday
But armed police remain on site of the property where the killing happened
The victim was believed to be Albert Enoka
who was reportedly a member of the Tribesmen gang and a former president of the Rebels Motorcycle Club's Christchurch chapter
Earlier there were five police cars on scene
with forensics combing for evidence at the back of the property
Police are still on the hunt for a large man in his 30s with full face tattoos
The man was wearing dark clothing and had at least two associates with him
Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said the investigation into the shooting was progressing thanks to an influx of information from the public
Police believed the offender fled the scene in a black Mercedes saloon vehicle
The car was located that day in Judd Crescent
Ryan said police want to establish where the Mercedes was prior to and immediately after the incident
Police want to hear from anyone with street-front CCTV cameras or dashcams that were travelling through Naenae on Tuesday
"We would also like to hear from anyone who has seen the car previously including days leading up to this incident or had any recent concerns about behaviour around Seddon Street
There was a real sense of unease in the Lower Hutt community as the manhunt continued
Labour's police spokesperson Ginny Anderson told Midday Report
but the risk to the general public appeared to be low
"We know that a brief verbal altercation took place between the victim and the alleged offender before the shooting occurred so it does indicate that it is contained to that group and that does give police reason to believe there is less of a risk to the general public."
Hutt City Eastern Ward councillor Andy Mitchell agreed and said while it was a shock to the community
hopefully aren't too concerned about their own safety and realise this does seem to have been an isolated incident that just happens to have taken place in our neighbourhood instead of another one."
Vera Karataua from Kokiri Marae said she knew the two people involved were gang members
but said it stayed in that circle and did not impact the rest of the town
but that's something that they take out and don't involve our community," Karataua said
Nickolas Boyd who has lived in the community all his life said it was "business as usual" for residents who have lived in the area a while
"Some people that just moved to this community recently
they're probably a bit frightened and scared but those that have been here for over 10 years
It is a bit scary but yeah you've just got to move on."
He said although he wanted police to catch the shooter right away
he recognised police needed time to do their procedures
who lived close to where the shooting happened
said knowing the shooter was still on the loose had not stopped her going about her daily life
But she admitted seeing armed police down her street was unsettling
"It's a concern to know there's guns out there..
and when I talked to the police lady on how terrifying her weapon was
even she thought so and we've got people on our street with those."
She said the shooting was embarrassing after the new pools in the community had just opened which had brought in visitors from outside of Naenae
Pakira Tapiki had only lived in Naenae for a few months and agreed he was scared both at the police response in the streets and how the gunman still had not been found
He was now looking forward to moving out of the area after the shooting happened close to his property on Judd Crescent
Police have ended the order for all Wellington officers to carry guns following the fatal shooting
Police want to speak to any potential witnesses
while a resident says "It's par for the course around here"
Two fights have been confirmed to have broken out at Naenae's new pool
and one patron told RNZ he won't be taking his family there again
People have taken to social media with concerns saying they've seen fights between patrons at the Te Ngaengae Pool in Naenae
Police said they were called to the pool at 5.25pm on Tuesday
"after a report of two youths fighting and possibly a verbal altercation involving one of the youth's parents."
"The parent and youth left before police arrived and there was no way to identify them," a police spokesperson
Head of aquatics at Hutt City Council Iain Brown said the pool's staff had been able to "effectively manage the incident" and were not the ones to call police
"In the three months the pool has been open
there has been one other altercation for which our staff did call police," Brown said
"Police have also supported us on a couple of minor incidents such as trespassing people which is not uncommon across our community facilities," Brown said
who took his five-year-old granddaughter to the pool a few weekends ago
"On arrival there the first thing that we came across was two policemen interviewing a staff member about an incident that had happened."
He said they were "very intimidating at times for the younger people swimming in the pool"
Olsthoorn said the staff at the pool didn't address the situation and appeared to be very young
he said they also found the slides had been closed due to a lack of staff
Olsthoorn said other similar pools like Wainuiomata seemed to be run much better
The council said it took safety seriously and continuously reviewed it procedures to ensure its pools remained a welcoming and secure space for all
"Anyone managing public spaces deals with these sorts of issues on a regular basis
equipped and supported on an ongoing basis to respond to a broad range of challenging situations
including threatening behaviour at our facilities," said Brown

A resident near the scene of a fatal shooting of a man believed to be a former gang boss in Lower Hutt says she heard shouted threats before a gunshot
reportedly former gang president Albert "Alby" Enoka
Denise Topp said she ran inside after she heard the shot and looked out her window to see police trying to revive the man in the street
"All of a sudden I could hear this fulla swearing and carrying on
Then it stopped and all of a sudden I heard this gunshot so I took off inside," Topp said
The neighbourhood was "quiet as" the next day
"I think a lot of the damage was done yesterday but no
Topp said she'd never experienced anything like yesterday's events in her life
The fact that there's gangs living in the street surround by kids and they've got weapons
"Imagine if the kids had have been running around when he did that..
He could've missed that guy and shot a kid."
Topp said people in the neighbourhood were dealing with the shooting "in their own way"
All police in Wellington have been armed during the manhunt
Police say they are not yet able to name the man in his late 30s who died
Family social posts and media reports say he was Albert "Alby" Enoka
Relatives have paid tribute to Enoka on social media
Enoka was a former president of the Rebels Motorcyle Club's Christchurch chapter
He was a current patched member of the Tribesmen when he died, Stuff reports.
Court documents showed Enoka was found guilty of kidnapping
and drug and firearm possession over four days in February 2015
Wearing a Rebels gang vest and balaclava and armed with a six inch knife
he attacked his partner who he suspected had cheated on him
verbally abused her and threw her into the car."
He also attacked the man he thought she was cheating on him with
At the High Court in Christchurch in 2017 he was sentenced to ten years in prison
but appealed that sentence in 2018 on the grounds that it was "manifestly excessive"
The offender is about 30 years old and described as large with full facial tattoos
He was wearing dark clothing and was with at least two associates
I fully expect he's being helped," Detective Inspector John Van Den Heuvel said
"We believe those involved had gang affiliations are are known to each other."
Police say while people should not approach the man on the run
that they do not believe there is a risk to the wider public
Police are wanting sightings of a black 2008 Mercedes with the number plate KRP453
which they believe offenders used to get away
Armed police remained at the scene on Wednesday morning
Residents on their way home from work and school on a hot Tuesday afternoon were met with police tape
and armed officers telling them Seddon Street was shut
It was blocked off completely between Wheatley Street and Waddington Drive
but a walkway through Naenae Park offered a closer glimpse of the scene
and others who had come for a look - were gathered at the corner of Waddington Drive near the dairy and fish and chip shop
paramedics and fire and emergency staff go about their jobs
A white tarp covered a shape in the middle of the street
Neighbours agreed crime was a normal part of life in the neighbourhood - but it was a worry to learn someone had died
Tape was strung across a row of about five houses
About a dozen armed officers were patrolling the cordon
and investigators were speaking to neighbours
A neighbour told RNZ he had heard shouting and looked out his window to see a man lying in the road
The people in the house had only been at the address for a few weeks
and there had been fights and conflict there
Another local person said he had rushed to help a nurse who stopped to give assistance to the the injured man
and gave his T-shirt to her as she tried to staunch the bleeding
He said he saw no evidence of gang membership on the man who succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene
Earlier a resident said the neighbourhood was quiet
and the property was a "known party house" with "gang-related stuff in there"
Investigators were loading equipment into the property
Traffic outside the house was building up as locals slowed to look down the cordoned off driveway
and local children were riding their bikes past the scene on their way to school
Police have launched a homicide inquiry and say they are searching for the person responsible for a fatal shooting in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae
Emergency services were called about 3.20pm to the scene on Seddon Street in Lower Hutt
after a man was located critically injured in the street and he died a short time later
Some Seddon St residents whose houses were cordoned off have now been allowed to return home
Inspector Simon De Wit said police would have an increased presence in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance to residents
A scene examination was underway and police wanted to speak to potential witnesses
Police said there had been no arrests at this stage and they were working to locate the offender or offenders
Local resident Shannon McColley said the first she knew about the incident was when she looked out the window and saw the Armed Offenders Squad across the street
and she could see what looked like a white tarpaulin in the street
I've had my door open - the screen door - all day
"I won't be surprised if the cops come knocking about my cameras," she said
Another resident said everyone was on edge while police searched for the person behind the fatal shooting
said the murder investigation was shocking because the area was generally quiet
and it was scary knowing that the person responsible was still on the loose
The resident said the house at the centre of the police investigation was a "known party house"
the people were pleasant and mainly kept to themselves
"[The area] is quite quiet most of the time
earlier said it was sad to hear someone had died
but they were not worried for their safety
Another resident told RNZ a sheet had been lain over something in the middle of the road
Local resident Fatima Khaliff told RNZ she was not sure when she would be able to return home
as the shooting took place right outside her house
but when she returned home she found the road blocked off
because stuff like that does happen a lot around our street."
Emergency services are asking Seddon St residents to follow the directions of officers at the cordons
Three police cars and armed officers have blocked Seddon St at the corner of Wheatley Street
Residents are out on the street talking amongst each other and looking on down the road
but the scene cannot be viewed from the cordons
Police are urging people to send in CCTV footage that may have captured the man they believe killed gang member Albert Enoka in Lower Hutt last week
Enoka was shot dead at a property on Seddon Street in Naenae on 10 December, and his tangi was being held Tuesday
A manhunt was on for 28-year-old Wipuhara Kapene
and want people to use an online portal to upload CCTV
videos and photos that may help their investigation
They want to track the movements of a black Mercedes
shortly before and after 3.10pm in Naenae on Tuesday 10 December
"We also are wanting to establish what other vehicles and persons were in the area around the time of the shooting," said Detective Inspector Haley Ryan
"Particular areas of interest include Seddon Street
CCTV will be crucial to the inquiry, she said. Video and pictures can be uploaded to an online portal
Ryan said Kapene was dangerous and should not be approached
About 140 police are available to keep an eye on the tangi for slain gang member Albert Enoka in the Wellington region as the hunt for the killer continues
The man accused of shooting and killing Albert Enoka in Lower Hutt earlier this month can now be named as Wipuhara Kapene
Enoka, who was a member of the Tribesmen gang and a former president of the Rebels Motorcycle Club's Christchurch chapter, died on 10 December after being shot on Seddon Street in Naenae
He was found critically injured about 3.15pm

Kapene was arrested and charged with murder on Christmas Eve after police executed a number of search warrants in Wairarapa - although they did not at the time name the man arrested
Kapene appeared at the Wellington District Court from prison via AVL on Friday
The charges of murder and possession of a firearm were transferred to the High Court in Wellington
Kapene told the court he wanted name suppression

was shot dead in Lower Hutt on December 10
Albert Enoka, 39, died from his injuries on Seddon St in Naenae as police and members of the public tried to save his life about 3.20pm on Tuesday
Police were just minutes away when another man allegedly shot him after a verbal altercation
but despite arriving on the scene within five minutes of the shooting
they did not see the shooter or his gang associates and could not save Enoka
District manager of criminal investigations
told media this afternoon the shooter is described as being about 30
with a large build and full facial tattoos covering his whole face
was reportedly involved in a brief verbal altercation with another male prior to the fatal shooting
but police don’t believe there will be any retaliation
Van Den Heuvel said police are appealing to residents in central Naenae – in particular people in Seddon St and Judd Cres – who have street-facing CCTV cameras to come forward
Police were quick to recover the getaway car yesterday – a black 2008 Mercedes Saloon
registration KRP453 – but have not found the gun used in the attack
The car was found at a property on Judd Cres
and police want to hear from anyone who saw it yesterday
The shooter is believed to have left with other gang associates
While police were still working to figure out what had happened
“this does appear though to be an incident between known parties who are gang associates or gang members”
“So you’re asking if there’s likely to be any retaliation
We don’t see any information to lead us to believe that.”
When asked whether police knew if the victim and attacker belonged to different gangs or the same gang
Van Den Heuvel said “We know the people involved have links to gangs and we’re still trying to unravel exactly what that looks like.”
He said police don’t yet know what the motive was for the shooting and urged anyone with information “big or small” to speak to police
The body was removed from the street about 11.30pm and a blessing was performed by local iwi
Van Den Heuvel said police are not in a position to release the victim’s name
but the Herald understands it is Albert Enoka
Police launched a homicide investigation after the former Rebels gang president was found critically injured on the street and was unable to be saved by members of the public and emergency services staff at the scene
police cordoned off a property along the street and could be seen working down the driveway
Enoka had been released from prison earlier this year, having served a lengthy stint for a violent home invasion and kidnapping in 2015.
He and a co-offender were jailed for the methamphetamine-fuelled crime
which happened because he believed his girlfriend was cheating on him
which he later successfully appealed down to eight years and five months
The appeal hinged on whether the court had given him enough of a discount for assistance he offered authorities
Friend Robert Morgan said he had only known Enoka “since he got out early this year”
“What I knew of him wasn’t so different from everyone else.”
who was Enoka’s barber when he was released from prison
said although Enoka had a “colourful past” he was also “a gentle soul”
He said Enoka’s whānau line would not be described as gentle
but in their time together Enoka reflected more on change “than jumping back on the gangster life”
“But the gravity of that proved too strong
“Some may have known him for years but not truly know him because of what he represented in front of their eyes
but only a few will know from what he represented in front of their hearts.”
Morgan said he was sad to hear of Enoka’s death
and felt a mixture of sadness and anger at how he had died
“He had potential to turn people for the better.”
Armed police guarded Seddon St yesterday and were turning away traffic during the school rush
One woman said they arrived home and were told by police to “get inside and stay inside”
She said everybody on the street saw Enoka’s body
and she was concerned for her kids as they were getting home from school
who said she had lived on Seddon St “forever”
was out the back of her property when she heard sirens and assumed the incident was further away
When she eventually came out front she was told by police to go back inside
The woman said what happened was “incredible” and she was “shocked”
I’m still shocked about it,” she said today
A large group of Enoka’s family were gathered on the street outside her home last night when she went to bed
She said she spoke briefly to them and was told they were from Wainuiomata
Another resident said the broad daylight attack was “just something to process
Police yesterday said the incident would have caused “great concern” for nearby residents and the wider Naenae community
“We will have an increased presence in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance,” a spokesperson said
yesterday said police told him the man had been shot
“[I] just assumed the guy was involved in a hit and run.”
“A few cars turned up that must have been associates of the victim – they nearly overtook the emergency service vehicles coming down the road.”

Four Upper Hutt kids are literally living the highlife thanks to a new treehouse built by their father from timber recycled from the old Naenae Pool
After the Naenae Pool closed for refurbishment
material that would otherwise have gone to the landfill was offered free to those who wanted it
Among them were parents Joel and Tanya Pikari who
after returning from a 12-year stint living in the Middle East
got their hands on some old timber seating
a former builder now working in project management
grew up in Naenae and had plenty of fond memories from days spent at the pool
“I spent my weekends transforming the timber into a treehouse at our Upper Hutt home
making pulley systems and creating their own fun among the bush in their very own treehouse
“It was a project that enabled me to recapture my childhood memories from days spent at the Naenae pool while also creating new memories for my own family.”
Tanya says it was made all the better knowing the treehouse was made from material that would otherwise have gone to landfill
“You could say that the timber’s gone to the treetops
so in a way it’s been upcycled.”
Mayor Campbell Barry says it’s wonderful to see how material rescued from the Naenae Pool is being transformed with a new purpose
“There is now a little piece of Naenae Pool in Upper Hutt that will bring joy to people in a way that would never have been thought of when the pool first opened in 1956.”
The new Naenae Pool and Fitness complex is being built with sustainability in mind
in line with Hutt City Council’s target to be carbon-zero by 2050
Ninety per cent of material from the demolition of the old pool and the community hall was saved from going to landfill
including 13,162 tonnes of scrap metal and concrete which was crushed for use as backfill on the site
Demolition experts McMahon Services won the Asbestos or Demo Best Practice Project over $1 million at the 2022 NZDAA Demolition & Asbestos Awards for their work on the demolition
which demonstrated industry best practice for safety and sustainability
Naenae Pool and Fitness Centre secured co-funding of $27 million from the Government’s Infrastructure Reference Group (IRG) fund
Te Ngaengae Pool and Fitness Centre will open for business on Wednesday 4 December
following a dawn blessing ceremony earlier that day
Mayor Campbell Barry said he was excited that after five years Naenae would have their pool returned
“The old pool was the beating heart of Naenae
Its closure impacted not just local residents
but aquatic sports across the region and local businesses
“This project has been a true partnership with the community
The Community Advisory Group has been involved from the start
ensuring we delivered on what the Naenae community wanted
The pool isn’t just returning – it’s bigger
We expect to see more people spending time in Naenae
and bringing new opportunities for the town centre
To have been there as Mayor when the project started in 2020 and to be there again for the opening in December will be one of the proudest moments of my time as Mayor of Lower Hutt.”
with $27 million coming from central government through the Infrastructure Reference Group Fund in partnership with Crown Infrastructure Partners
The new pool is on track to achieve a Green Star 5 sustainability rating which means it not only has less environmental impact
pool-side party room and two moveable bulkheads which mean the main pool can accommodate even more activity
Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa gifted the project a cultural narrative that has informed the design
The building’s roof is reimagined as an upturned waka
and the entrance features a supporting pou whenua
Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa recommended a lead artist to enable art to be embedded in the building
As well as the health and social connection benefits that will come from the new facility
the project was also designed to deliver wider benefits for the community so that every dollar spent provided the most possible value
This includes using local companies where possible and giving local people employment and training opportunities
hospitals and primary schools have benefitted from thousands of knitted items made and donated by the Team Naenae Knitting Natters charity group
Items made for Pregnancy Help and Foster Hope include baby jackets
as well as beanie/scarf/fingerless glove sets and slippers for seven local primary schools
They also make woollen hearts for Te Omanga Hospice
Twiddlemuffs (hand muffs designed for dementia patients) and baby blankets for Hutt City and Wellington hospitals
and adult garments for The Red Cross Refugee Support Programme
Knitting Natters is one of the first groups to use the Council’s new Te Mako Naenae Community Centre
Council's Neighbourhood and Communities Director Andrea Blackshaw says the new community facility is about bringing people together and creating better social cohesion
"The Naenae community asked for a place in the town centre to gather and connect
when Knitting Natters started keeping robust records
the group has made and donated 11,097 items
they have made 3108 items and are on course to break last year’s record total of 3121
Spokesperson Chris Dopson says the group has around 45 to 50 members
of which about 25 attend the weekly Wednesday knit-fest at Te Mako
There are also three other informal groups who are connected to Knitting Natters and knit remotely
"We gather up donated resources from the community - yarn
haberdashery and the like - and use them to make new items which are returned to the community where there is a need
Pregnancy Help spokesperson Sandra Scott has seen first-hand the positive impact of Knitting Natters’ creations
"Their lovely knitted items have helped hundreds of Wellington’s most vulnerable families keep their babies warm
We are so grateful for this wonderful group
Dopson has been a Knitting Natters member since 2012
and satisfaction around using resources that would otherwise go to waste."
Dopson says the wool is provided free to the group
most often sourced by word of mouth or through appeals to the community through posters
leaflet drops and connecting with other community organisations such as Hutt Timebank and Crafting Threads of Aroha
"And over the last two years we received grants from two charitable organisations of $1000 and $500 respectively to buy wool."
the policy is to buy wool through New Zealand-owned retail businesses and
Naenae Knitting Natters was started in 2011 by then Hutt City Councillor Lisa Bridson
with former Team Naenae Trust (TNT) coordinator Mel Yaxley
Brisdon was a trustee of TNT which was looking for activities to engage and benefit the community
She enjoyed knitting and suggested creating the group
TNT trustees agreed and the group was formed
It was designed to be a community activity to foster social benefits for group members and provide community benefit by using donated yarn to make items

Police believe a man fatally shot in Naenae
Lower Hutt yesterday and the gunman are known to each other
Police received reports a person had been shot outside a house on Seddon St around 3.15pm yesterday
Detective Inspector John Van Den Heuvel told reporters in a media standup today
Nearby officers arrived at the scene "very quickly"
"The officers immediately applied first aid on this man but sadly
"It is apparent the victim's injuries has been caused by a gunshot."
Van Den Heuvel said the victim was a 39-year-old man from Wainuiomata
police are unable to publicly name him until his family and next of kin have been advised
"Our thoughts and condolences are with family and friends at this most difficult time of their loss."
The victim is expected to be formally named by police in "the next day or so"
Cordons on Seddon St were in place until 11.30pm yesterday when the body was taken away and the scene was blessed by local iwi
It's believed both parties had gang affiliations
Witnesses told police there was a "brief verbal altercation" between the victim and another man prior to the shooting
The suspect then fled the scene in a black 2008 Mercedes-Benz Saloon with "associates" before police arrived
was recovered by police last night at a property on Judd Crt in Naenae
The suspect was described as being aged around 30
with a large build and full facial tattoos
Van Den Heuvel said while he "should not be approached
police do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the wider public"
While the investigation is still in the early stages
police have been "following some good lines of inquiry"
"We believe those involved had gang affiliations and are known to each other," he said
"We believe this is an isolated event between two parties known to one another."

A manhunt continues for a 28-year-old wanted over a homicide in Naenae
with police seeking CCTV from the public and information about the movements of a car
Police are appealing for information over the death of Albert Enoka in Naenae last week
Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said relevant surveillance camera footage would be "crucial" to investigators as officers seeking a 28-year-old suspect
Ryan said police were particularly interested in the movements of a black Mercedes
we are looking to establish the movements of the pictured black Mercedes
shortly before and after 3.10pm in Naenae on Tuesday
December 10," she said in a media release
"We also are wanting to establish what other vehicles and persons were in the area around the time of the shooting
Particular areas of interest include Seddon St
The detective inspector said the suspect "has links across Wellington
and in the Wairarapa area and in Eastern District
Officers will also be maintaining a "visible presence" in the Hutt Valley and Porirua areas today as they monitor the victim's funeral
A police spokesperson said Enoka was being "farewelled at a funeral in Wainuiomata this morning
followed by a procession through Hutt Valley to Porirua
where he will be laid to rest at Whenua Tapu cemetery"
Stuff has reported Enoka was a former Rebels Motorcycle Club gang president
"Officers from across Wellington will be deployed
alongside Police from outside Wellington alongside specialist teams."
Inspector Shaun Lingard said police’s thoughts are with the man’s family
"Our aim is to provide the space for them and other attendees to grieve
while ensuring the law is upheld We have maintained contact with the community
prior to the funeral and have set clear expectations around behaviour."
Lingard said "unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated" with officers manning checkpoints and police patrolling "relevant areas" to monitor the procession

More than 25kg of cocaine has been seized and four men arrested following an joint investigation into the importation of the drug into Christchurch
Police and Customs received information about a "significant importation" of cocaine that had come through Lyttelton Port on March 29
Search warrants were then executed across the country by specialist teams to support investigators with evidence gathering
including possession of cocaine for supply and burglary
and will appear in various district courts across a range of dates
Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Sparks said the seizure equated to more than 250,000 doses of cocaine and $9 million of harm
"That is an enormous amount of damage and misery that had been heading into our communities that has now been halted through this investigation."
Sparks said the success of the investigation was partly down to the "excellent partnership" between Customs and the police
"We continue to have a focus on engaging with businesses and supporting their legitimate services by keeping them safe with prevention advice to deter drug trafficking organisations’ attempts to exploit their people and premises."
Customs acting investigations manager Rachael Manning said the investigation resulted from quick action and close collaboration between the agencies as well as industry partners
"We know that transnational and serious organised crime groups are actively targeting New Zealand to drive up both demand and supply of illegal drugs such as cocaine for maximum profit
They’re using every method possible to exploit any vulnerabilities within international supply chains
in secure areas or on vessels themselves."
A law student at Victoria University of Wellington said students had been "left in the lurch" after an announcement on Monday that said next month's exams for two law subjects would have to be handwritten
also said a timetable had still not been provided
he said he had become "increasingly worried that the embedding of artificial intelligence (AI) in many students' laptops makes ensuring that students' work is their own very difficult"
He had hoped the university would have a technical solution
although he hoped one would be available at the end of the year
"This means that we will not be able to allow students to use laptops for exams next month," McLay wrote
"I want to make this announcement as soon as possible so students have time to prepare for handwritten examinations."
McLay added that there would be an exception for students with a disability that required them to use a keyboard
The situation affected the LAWS 312 Equity and LAWS 334 Ethics exams
The student said the announcement was stressful during an already stressful time
a representative of the Victoria University of Wellington Law Students' Society said the Council of Legal Education had to be certain that everyone who passed the exams in Equity and Ethics deserved a pass (and did not cheat)
"Previously in person invigilation has been sufficient to manage these concerns
due to the increasing ability and sophistication of AI the faculty were concerned about the reliability of the exams
leading to their decision to make the Equity and Ethics exams handwritten."
The representative said the law students' society had expressed that students' preference was for typed exams — "reflecting how our professional lives will look"
once it became clear that the faculty felt they needed to proceed with handwritten exams we emphasised that students should be informed as early as possible
accessibility options should be made clear
and exam content and timing should reflect the fact that many students have not done handwritten exams since high school and are not used to writing for extended periods of time."
The representative added it was separate from the delay to the exam timetable
Victoria University Provost Professor Bryony James said students' handwriting their exams meant the university could be confident that the results truly reflected the students' own knowledge and effort — free of any suggestion of the influence of AI
James said she would ensure that no student was disadvantaged
and was committed to working with students — including those with disabilities — who might need further support to participate in exams and final assessments as a result
"As part of this undertaking the Faculty of Law will review this Trimester's exam results to ensure this cohort's performance is in line with previous years and confirm that students are not significantly impacted by this decision."
President of Victoria University's Students' Association Liban Ali told Morning Report he was aware that this could happen as early as last year
"It has been on the card as of last year
I feel like there was something that was going to happen."
Ali said the announcement had come at the wrong time
and that the Students' Association were very concerned for students
He said the Students' Association had engaged the Law Society and the faculty to determine the best way to support students
He added that he would make sure that any changes were communicated early in the future

A 25-year-old man has appeared in court after he allegedly fired a gun at another person inside a Ministry of Social Development office in Masterton yesterday
Police were called to the incident on Lincoln Rd at around 12.40pm on Monday
Wairarapa Area Commander Inspector Nick Thom said there were no reports of injuries from the incident
"Following police's initial enquiries
one person was taken into custody a short time later nearby."
Cordons were put in place around the area and some staff were armed as a precaution
Thom said it was believed to be an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public
"Police would like to commend Ministry of Social Development staff for their prompt actions in following their lockdown procedures
as this enabled police to provide a swift response to resolve this incident quickly."
A 25-year-old man appeared in Masterton District Court today
charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and conducting a dangerous act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
A stranger allegedly tried to force an 8-year-old boy into a car outside an Auckland primary school yesterday before bystanders intervened and the man drove off
Police confirmed they were investigating an incident from around 3pm on Monday outside Rowandale School in the suburb of Manurewa
"Police are still working to understand exactly what was occurring at the time and our enquiries are ongoing," a spokesperson said
"We have spoken with the boy and will continue to work through a careful process
Rowandale School principal Karl Vasau said in a statement to social media that other parents had intervened
"The student then made his way home and told his parents who then came into school to let us know and then they rung the police."
Vasau told 1News the pupil was "doing fine" following the incident and was surrounded by a "supportive
"Our student is safe now and his family are thankful that nothing further happened to their boy but are wanting us all to be aware and stay safe
It's about working with that child to make them feel safe again
but also looking forward to returning back to school with a little bit of normality."
Police had reacted "pretty quickly" to the reports
"They've been in this morning to touch base and connect
the community police constables are going to come back to tomorrow to address the whole school in relation to what had happened and around keeping themselves safe before and after school."
Increased police patrols would remain in the area after school from Wednesday
Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105
Hawke's Bay iwi Ngāti Kahungunu has been unsuccessful in its bid to buy back the mountain Kahurānaki
but the iwi says its connection to the land will always remain
Kahurānaki Station - a 1156 hectare sheep and beef farm south of Havelock North which includes the peak of the mountain - came up for sale earlier this year and the iwi launched a fundraising campaign to buy it
The campaign to bring the Kahurānaki back into Māori ownership was called He Maunga Ka Taea
and included a 10-day hīkoi from Māhia to Kahurānaki
It raised more than $95,000 on crowd funding platform koha.kiwi
Hastings-based post-settlement governance entity Tamatea Pōkai Whenua Trust submitted a tender on behalf of the iwi
Chairman Pōhatu Paku said the trust was the only local entity to tender for the Station and they were saddened and disappointed by the outcome
The trust had approached the tender on the basis it was presented
Paku acknowledged the young and emerging iwi members who had generated the groundswell of support for the tender and for the longer term status of the mountain
ki tēnā o tātau e titikaha nei ki tēnei kaupapa
I just want to acknowledge and mihi to everybody that has connected with this kaupapa
Paku said the trust would be engaging with the station's new owners at an appropriate time to convey the iwi's history and also set out their aspirations
"The continuation of the protection of our wāhi tapu (sacred sites) is significantly important to us
Continued access to the mountain would also be a high priority
"The previous owners were quite open for Kura for people running kaupapa and also those that wished to ascend the maunga they allowed that
they identified that it was culturally significant to us all."
Paku said Tamatea Pōkai Whenua will need to foster the groundswell of support and leadership that the He Maunga Ka Taea campaign had generated
"The whakapapa connections and taonga that is Kahurānaki maunga remain
our greatest advantage is that we live in perpetuity and our maunga and our tīpuna live with us and they continue to be ours
"And like all of our tūtohu whenua (landmarks) our maunga carries our traditions and our identity and our histories and we remain uncompromising to act in the best interests of our tūtohu whenua both for this generation and for future generations."
Paku said the trust may look at legal personhood as another avenue to protect the mountain
but ultimately he said the maunga remains an ancestor and retains its own mana which no one can ever own

Former prime minister Sir John Key says he remains optimistic about Donald Trump's domestic economic policy despite opposing the tariff strategy that has sent global markets into turmoil in recent months
who served as prime minister for eight years
was the keynote speaker at an Auckland business summit earlier today
Sir John told 1News he believed Trump would ultimately take a more moderate approach to tariffs than initially proposed
"I'm not a fan of tariff policies
I don't think they really work," he said
as I think the stock market is telling you at the moment
that actually there will be a more sensible landing place for the tariffs that he's wanting to impose."
Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy
"They're just a negotiating point
I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point
"What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction
You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked
The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part
'I'm going to negotiate case by case'."
Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US
but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy
Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy
he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States
It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs."
Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries
Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing"
particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented
"I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said
noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies
who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks
said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions"
"I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view
but I don't think we should panic either
and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said
"There are growing markets around the world
It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view
We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us."
Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris
he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs
middle-income consumers or consumers in America do
because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country
He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs
and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that
and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade."
Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis
Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her
All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state
thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February
Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg
which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state
Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband
safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said
Hanson was assigned the case in late February and
he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region
They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account
obituaries and marriage licenses from that region
they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg
including date of birth and social security number
Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address
"I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say
‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me
I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.”
Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share
saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found
“I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had
having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said
Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of
And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting
he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to
so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything
any phone numbers of family members back here," he said
"Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.”
Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe
That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town
While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane
for the other it has caused problems for 36 years
It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door
Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail
to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard
a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp
remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening
She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane
whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name
Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him
“You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.”
Another Shane William Pritchard had been born in Otago
They were separated by just two weeks and about 50 miles – one growing up in Mosgiel
the other in Milton – but also by the lives they’d been leading
To watch the full video story go to TVNZ+
Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school
He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes
I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go
Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police
he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence
one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.”
he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his
He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on
“I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash
Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined
and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money
Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment
so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action
'Anything I could get away with
Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem
But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use
Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase
Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences
Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process
the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane
The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media
He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended
He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously
Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s
the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again
This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes
But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice
he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines
He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays
It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health
not realising the constant stress it placed on his life
John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living
worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.”
he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point
He described going for days at a time unable to eat or sleep wondering what might happen next
"Am I going to be in a position where they've got me in handcuffs or I've got debt collectors coming to the door?" ...You're spiralling into this black hole." He started taking anti-anxiety medication which helped
And events regarding Milton Shane seemed to settle
Milton Shane was charged for fishing without a licence in Twizel and failing to comply with fisheries officers
But a court registrar incorrectly entered the birth date of Mosgiel Shane in the system
both Shanes were being chased to pay the $1530 fine
It was Mosgiel Shane who spotted the error and rang the court
He also sent a statement from his manager saying he’d not been fishing in Twizel that day
The reply he got was to say he’d been given the wrong form and that they wouldn’t accept his proof
They just wanted to know how I was going to pay the fine.”
The first Milton Shane knew about this was when Fair Go told him Mosgiel Shane had been chased for the fine
He was told to pay up or face the consequences
feeling he shouldn’t have to pay good money to correct someone else’s mistake
But it cost Mosgiel Shane over $5000 in legal fees
and took months of back and forth between him
“Why should anybody have to pay their own money to right somebody else's wrongs and prove who they are
I’m sick and tired of proving who I am all the time.”
He wanted the Ministry of Justice to take responsibility and reimburse him for his legal costs
saying court staff such as the registrar in this case have immunity if they make mistakes such as the one made here
and if I make a mistake and it's affecting my client
that it's going to cost them money to rectify a mistake that I've made.”
he deserves a million apologies from those guys,” she says
Milton Shane told Fair Go he still gets in trouble
but wants the other Shane to know he doesn’t use his birth date anymore
And he had a message for him: “We’ve got to get it sorted for you
so you can have a good life with you and your family because I’m trying to get my life together with my son and my grandson”
He offers to meet to see if they can sort it out together
but I’m not interested in meeting him,.” says Mosgiel Shane
He says he doesn’t hold any grudges and accepts Milton Shane’s apology
And he believes the only way for that to happen is for the courts and the Ministry of Justice to give him a guarantee that mix-ups won’t occur in the future
Fair Go asked the Ministry of Justice to appear in person to apologise and provide reassurance to Shane of its plans to guard against these mistakes
The Ministry declined our request to be on camera saying any comment on an individual case would compromise the independence of the courts as the Ministry operates separately
But it did send a written apology directly to Mosgiel Shane
It also admitted mistakes can occur in clerical records
but said instructions were clear and the importance of getting things right had been emphasised to staff
Mosgiel Shane isn’t totally convinced that’s the end of it
“All I want is for the Ministry of Justice and the courts to do their job
I'd like to live without this hanging over me all the time
his criminal check has come back showing a clean slate
Cardinal John Dew is about to go into conclave to vote for a new pope
is among the 133 cardinals gathered in the Vatican to elect a successor to Pope Francis
Dew and his fellow Cardinals will be locked away from the world as they participate in daily votes in the Sistine Chapel until white smoke billows from the rooftop signalling a new pope is selected
Read more about how the conclave works here
He follows in the footsteps of Cardinal Reginald Delargey and Cardinal Thomas Williams - Kiwis who had previously entered conclave in 1978 and 2005
Dew said cardinals had been meeting daily to share their perspectives on the needs of the church and what qualities a new pope would need to possess to address said needs
“Listening to what everyone is saying and the kind of person they're looking for
to hear the passion that people have for spreading the work of the Gospel,” Dew said
“I think one of the things that a new pope will need to do is to continue to try and give hope to the world
“But as well as being the leader of the Church
he needs to be a world leader who's prepared to speak out and
in this world of disinformation and misinformation and sometimes lies
Dew said other cardinals who had previously participated in conclavce described the centuries-old tradition as "divinely inspired"
“A couple of the cardinals actually said you can go into the conclave and even have some ideas
but it's only after a vote or two that things start to clarify,” he recalled
but it became very clear that he was the one
They described that as the work of Holy Spirit
“And the fact that you're in a place where you have no contact with anybody else – no cell phones
no iPads – the whole thing becomes a bit like a retreat and a real time of prayer.”
Dew said finding a successor among a sea of so many contenders also had him feeling some "apprehension"
the fact that this only happens once every few years
and it has incredible consequences for the Church and for the world
Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said
I love you” in Portuguese rose from the crowd behind him
whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor
which also displayed what appears to be the album cover art — an X-ray of a pelvis
"100% written in blood," the website read
The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth
She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room
She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft
Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured
adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children
According to her testimony and that of the concierge
at least one of the suspects had a handgun
The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery

Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered
Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime

his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian
who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station
The second robber said he tied up the concierge with cables but did not go up to Kardashian’s apartment
said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian
but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime
Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision
he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian
is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat
although he was filmed by CCTV cameras and numerous telephone contacts with the other co-defendants show his involvement
The other defendants are suspected of providing information about Kardashian’s presence in the apartment
Others are accused of playing a role in the resale of the jewellery in Antwerp

Harley Whaanga was jailed for killing Anita Rani on November 16 last year
The husband of a pedestrian hit by a speeding, stolen car driven by a gang member has described feeling “helpless” as he watched his wife die in front of him
her killer has been recorded on prison phone calls in the months after the crash making “vile
racist remarks” indicating in “blunt and foul language” he had no remorse for the death
Harley William John Whaanga, 37, appeared in the Wellington District Court this afternoon for sentencing, having earlier pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including those relating to the death of Indian woman Anita Rani, who was visiting New Zealand on November 16
Whaanga had been on a burglary spree the night before the crash
stealing multiple items and the car he killed Rani with
a patched Mongrel Mob member with a tattoo across his face reading “chaindog” was seen driving at twice the speed limit on suburban roads in the minutes before the fatal incident
which happened in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae
a sealed suburban road in a residential area that is heavily housed
Rani was standing on the road adjacent to the white paint marking the lane boundary of the road when Whaanga hit her with the car at a speed of 77-83km/h
with the speed of the collision causing her to launch onto the bonnet and windscreen of the vehicle
landing on the ground some 10-15 metres forward of the impact site,” the summary said
Rani suffered “multiple traumatic injuries” and was found dead at the scene by first responders
A pathologist later confirmed Rani had suffered internal decapitation of her head from her spine
and a transected aorta causing internal bleeding
Whaanga continued driving at speed without making any attempt to stop or check on Rani’s injuries
He dumped the vehicle outside a nearby vacant property and was found by police eight days later
Whaanga appeared before Judge Noel Sainsbury today having earlier pleaded guilty to driving dangerously causing death
driving while disqualified third or subsequent
and various theft and burglary-related charges
Victim impact statements from Rani’s husband and two children were read out in court by representatives
Rani’s husband said the crash happened in front of him
“I felt helpless as I was unable to help,” he said
“I feel like I’m in a lifelong punishment and there are days when I do not feel like living.”
He explained the couple had arrived in New Zealand to see their son
One of the couple’s children also gave a statement saying he was having trouble believing his mother was gone
“The actions of the man who did this has changed my life
Rani’s daughter said she was at home in India when she heard the news
“I wish that I had not agreed to let [my mother] come to New Zealand.”
She said the incident had changed her father
Judge Sainsbury laid out the facts of the case
saying Rani was “there to be seen” and there was “ample room on the road” before Whaanga hit her
He said Whaanga’s offending was in the “highly dangerous category” compared to other offences under the same charge
Judge Sainsbury was asked to discount Whaanga’s sentence for his remorse
saying he had received a letter written on Whaanga’s behalf saying he was truly sorry and wished he could go back in time and stop this even occurring
But the judge said he had been given transcripts from prison phone calls made by Whaanga in November and December
which the judge declined to quote verbatim out of respect for Rani’s family
“It indicates in blunt and foul language he has no remorse
It indicates an appalling lack of any sensitivity for what has happened to the deceased and to her family
It indicates showing a bit of remorse ‘just to get out’
He refused to allow a discount for remorse
He noted Whaanga had an “appalling” upbringing and had spoken of how his father was useless and didn’t have a job
“As matters stand now Mr Whaanga does not see his own children and has never had a job,” Judge Sainsbury said
He gave Whaanga a sentence of five and a half years in prison and a five-year disqualification from driving
“You’ve spent a lot of your time in prison,” he said to Whaanga
“What I hope is that at least in part behind some of those things you said was that stupidity of bravado.”
He encouraged Whaanga to try to turn his life around
you’ll just simply be a life support for your addictions.”
The man wanted for the murder of Albert Enoka last week in Lower Hutt has been named as 28-year-old Wipuhara Kapene
died after being shot on 10 December in the suburb of Naenae
Police consider Kapene to be armed and dangerous
and information after the fact should be reported via 105 or online
and they will look to prosecute anyone harbouring or assisting him
On Tuesday, neighbours overheard shouting before the shooting
Enoka's tangi will take place tomorrow in Lower Hutt Tuesday morning with a procession to Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Porirua afterwards
Hutt Valley acting area commander Inspector Shaun Lingard said police will be observing everything happening
"We will maintain a visible presence in Lower Hutt tomorrow morning and will monitor the procession through Lower Hutt to Porirua."
"Our thoughts are with the victim's family and those who will be gathering to mourn
and our role is to allow them to do so safely and respectfully
Lingard emphasised police will not tolerate any unlawful activity including breaches to the new gangs act which includes a ban on wearing patches
He said anyone caught breaking this law can expect enforcement action either during or after the tangi
there will likely be traffic disruption in the late morning in Lower Hutt
mainly around Wainuiomata and the highway between Hutt Valley and Porirua
Police are telling anyone concerned about their safety or witness illegal behaviour to call 111
Police are appealing for information over the death of Albert Enoka in Naenae last week, warning that the suspect was "dangerous and should not be approached".
Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said relevant surveillance camera footage would be "crucial" to investigators as officers seeking a 28-year-old suspect.
Ryan said police were particularly interested in the movements of a black Mercedes.
"As part of our ongoing inquiries, we are looking to establish the movements of the pictured black Mercedes, registration KRP453, shortly before and after 3.10pm in Naenae on Tuesday, December 10," she said in a media release.
"We also are wanting to establish what other vehicles and persons were in the area around the time of the shooting. Particular areas of interest include Seddon St, Judd Crescent, Wood Grove, Keys St, Waddington Dr, Naenae Rd, Hay St, and Waiwhetu Rd."
The detective inspector said the suspect "has links across Wellington, and in the Wairarapa area and in Eastern District. If you see him, call 111 immediately."
Officers will also be maintaining a "visible presence" in the Hutt Valley and Porirua areas today as they monitor the victim's funeral.
A police spokesperson said Enoka was being "farewelled at a funeral in Wainuiomata this morning, followed by a procession through Hutt Valley to Porirua, where he will be laid to rest at Whenua Tapu cemetery".
Stuff has reported Enoka was a former Rebels Motorcycle Club gang president.
"Officers from across Wellington will be deployed, alongside Police from outside Wellington alongside specialist teams."
Inspector Shaun Lingard said police’s thoughts are with the man’s family.
"Our aim is to provide the space for them and other attendees to grieve, while ensuring the law is upheld We have maintained contact with the community, and gang leaders and members, prior to the funeral and have set clear expectations around behaviour."
Lingard said "unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated" with officers manning checkpoints and police patrolling "relevant areas" to monitor the procession.

The man accused of killing a former gang president in Lower Hutt has pleaded not guilty in the Wellington High Court
Wipuhara Kapene is accused of murdering Albert Enoka after he was shot dead on 10 December at a Naenae property in Seddon Street
He appeared on charges of murder and possessions of a firearm via audio-visual link on Friday
Enoka was a member of the Tribesmen gang and a former president of the Rebels Motorcycle Club's Christchurch chapter
He was found with critical injuries but died at the scene at 3.15pm
Kapene was found and arrested on Christmas Eve after a search
He first appeared and was named in the Wellington District Court on 27 December
His trial date has been set for 2 March 2026
who was a member of the Tribesmen gang and a former president of the Rebels Motorcycle Club's Christchurch chapter
died on 10 December after being shot on Seddon Street in Naenae
Officers are trying to find Wipuhara Kapene who they have a warrant to arrest for the murder after the death of Albert Enoka
Police received reports a person had been shot outside a house on Seddon St around 3.15pm yesterday, Detective Inspector John Van Den Heuvel told reporters in a media standup today.
Nearby officers arrived at the scene "very quickly", where they found a man "injured, lying on the road", he said.
"The officers immediately applied first aid on this man but sadly, his injury was fatal, and he died at the scene.
Van Den Heuvel said the victim was a 39-year-old man from Wainuiomata.
However, police are unable to publicly name him until his family and next of kin have been advised.
The victim is expected to be formally named by police in "the next day or so".
Cordons on Seddon St were in place until 11.30pm yesterday when the body was taken away and the scene was blessed by local iwi, he said.
It's believed both parties had gang affiliations, police said.
Witnesses told police there was a "brief verbal altercation" between the victim and another man prior to the shooting.
The suspect then fled the scene in a black 2008 Mercedes-Benz Saloon with "associates" before police arrived.
The vehicle, with registration number KRP453, was recovered by police last night at a property on Judd Crt in Naenae.
The suspect was described as being aged around 30, with a large build and full facial tattoos. He was wearing dark clothing.
Van Den Heuvel said while he "should not be approached, police do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the wider public".
While the investigation is still in the early stages, police have been "following some good lines of inquiry".
"We believe those involved had gang affiliations and are known to each other," he said.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, live nearby with street-facing CCTV, or knows the suspect involved have been urged to contact police.

Naenae’s Trade School Kitchen (TSK) café will partner with Hutt City Council to provide a pop-up coffee stand in the foyer at Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness centre
The pop-up café will run as a three-month pilot to gauge demand
a deliberate decision was made to not include a destination café as it may have taken customers away from local businesses
Directly across the road from the pool are several businesses offering coffee and kai
including Trade School Kitchen Café – a social enterprise providing employment opportunities and a place of connection for those who face barriers to getting good work
Trade School Industries Chair Nic Drew-Crawshaw says many people will be able to call into the town centre to pick up what they want before and after going to the pool
The pop-up will make it easier for pool users to get a drink or snack on their way through
“Being able to get a coffee at the pool will not only add to the experience
it’ll also support a local social enterprise and provide employment opportunities for someone who may face barriers to getting good work
“As well as serving excellent coffee
we pride ourselves on sharing manaakitanga with our community
The pop-up at the pool allows us to extend that welcome to all pool visitors.”
The new $68 million facility opened on 4 December
As well as being popular with the local community
it’s expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors back into Naenae every year
Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says Council and the Community Advisory Group for the project worked tirelessly to ensure Naenae got the best possible benefit from the large financial investment made in the pool and fitness centre
“We know retailers in the town centre were hit hard by the pool’s closure and we worked hard to support them during the construction phase
we want to promote Naenae businesses so pool visitors can support them and help make the town centre thrive.”
Ninety per cent of demolition material was saved from landfill as part of the Naenae Pool redevelopment
prompting a Wellington man to go to great lengths to honour his wife
When Karori’s Malcolm Gunn learned in 2021 that demolition material from the old pool was available for recycling
he was keen to secure a piece of history with strong links to his family
His wife Gabrielle Gunn (nee Bateup) had created quite a splash at the pool where
she set several age group swimming records
and has swum the 40km length of Lake Taupō
Malcolm was fortunate to be given rimu timber during demolition of the pool
and he immediately had a ripple of inspiration on how to use it
“I wanted to build something for Gabrielle as a tribute to all the hours she spent at the pool
It was something that forged a life-long love of swimming.”
Sitting proudly on a deck he also built at their Karori home is a beautiful bench seat made from the recycled rimu and sporting the original colours from the old pool seating
“I can’t think of a better place for us to sit with a cuppa and ponder life
Gabrielle may have even sat on the same planks all those years ago.”
Gabrielle was touched by the effort and thoughtfulness of her husband
“He dived straight into the project and I couldn’t be happier with the result
He has cycled 3000 km from Cape Reinga to Bluff
and across the North Island from Mt Taranaki to East Cape
“We’ve always been active - it’s good for the mind
Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says it’s great to see the old Naenae Pool live on in a creative
“It’s heartwarming to see the legacy of the old Naenae Pool live on through this bench – particularly at the home of someone with such a strong connection to the pool
“Hopefully we’ll see more age group records broken when the new pool is open.”The new Naenae Pool and Fitness complex is being built with sustainability in mind

TEAM Naenae Trust (TNT) has moved into the former Post Office building and is running the facility
as per an agreement with Hutt City Council
opened in 1959 and has been earthquake strengthened and remodelled for its new use as a community centre
It features the recreation of a mural designed by artist Guy Ngan for the original Hillary Court Post Office
as well as carved timber pieces by local artist Tiaki Dahm (Te Ati Awa) and tukutuku inspired metal panels by Kereama Taepa (Te Ati Awa and Te Arawa)
TNT Chair Lillian Pak said “It’s been wonderful to see the excitement and support for the Centre
The community is looking forward to using Te Mako as a place to work
Te Mako is the first of three major facilities being developed by the Hutt City Council to revitalise Naenae
Construction of the Naenae Pool and Fitness Centre is well advanced and will open later this year
Work will then start on remodelling Walter Mildenhall Park
Concept plans, designed with significant input from the community, will be on display at Te Mako and the Naenae Library and can be viewed here

A Lower Hutt principal says the current government is attempting to "shut down" the free school lunch scheme after recent cuts meant his school's supplier could no longer provide meals at the mandated budget of $3.50 per student
Naenae College principal Chris Taylor said since its launch in 2019 the positive impact of the Ka Ora Ka Ako programme has been obvious
"I was here at the beginning before the lunches came out so I can speak to the fact that our students are doing significantly better in terms of behaviour," he said
"We used to have fights and drama as kids were hungry and the day drew on
"We've also noticed an improvement in the kids' concentration levels ..
because they have food to keep that kind of mental energy up."
many whānau in the community relied on the meals
"It's just an added layer of food that they can rely upon which makes their lives a whole lot easier in terms of providing for their families."
But this will come to an end next year, as Taylor said their supplier was unable to provide meals under the new per-meal budget stipulated as part of the $107 million worth of cuts announced this year
The scheme introduced by the Labour government in 2019 feeds more than 220,000 students at a cost of about $325m a year
Associate Education Minister David Seymour said the government would continue the programme
but the new model would use the government's significant buying power to save money on costs
"One of the restrictive parts of the [new] programme is the government asked for one supplier across the whole country," he said
[they] are very keen on making it cost even
they weren't even that concerned about necessary the profit but [they] couldn't even make it work at that range
"But they're not able to meet the transport costs ..
a cynical attempt by the government "to make the price so restrictive that they can turn around and say that the suppliers couldn't meet the demand rather than coming across as them making the decision that they couldn't fund it any longer"
He said others across the education system felt the same
"I think most of my colleagues would agree out there that you know they've effectively used this approach to try to shut down what is a really healthy productive
appropriate way of meeting the needs of our kids in their communities."
A dozen schools and early childhood sector groups signed a letter in March asking Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to retain funding for the scheme
"They're trying to find alternate methods because we can all see the writing on the wall."
It was revealed the government knew of "profound" benefits from the free school lunch scheme before it decided to cut funding
A yet-to-be published study also found achievement improved at some schools participating in the Ka Ora
A principal says she has been told the meals won't meet the same nutrition standards because of cost
A major provider of school lunches fears the government's new $3 limit for most students will see them eating more pre-packaged and processed food
A Whanganui school lunch contractor says kaupapa Māori suppliers could be out of the picture under the government's new free school lunch model
The beautiful sound of waiata ā-ringa sung by local tamariki filled the early morning silence in Naenae today as part of the blessing ceremony for the new Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness
was performed by hundreds of local school students who have been rehearsing these items for the past three years
Mayor Campbell Barry says Tā i te Kawa (blessing) was a significant and moving ceremony that reinforced how the new pool and fitness centre will be at the heart of the local community
"The closure of the old pool in 2019 hit the Naenae community hard
The pool was an important part of the city and regional aquatic network
"Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness is a state-of-the-art
I’m delighted that we have been able to deliver the pool on time and under budget
This incredible new space is a sign of what we can achieve when Council and community work together
I'm really excited about what this means for the future of the Naenae community."
provided the cultural narrative for Te Ngaengae
"Today is a significant milestone for everyone in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai
This pool will be enjoyed by all tamariki and their whānau who have joined us to celebrate and restore the mauri of the building
"The haka (traditional chant) and waiata ā-ringa (action song) performed today recount the historical and cultural essence of Te Ngaengae
honouring its unique landscape and the ancestral connections to the tupua
These compositions acknowledge the rich heritage and stories embedded in the land
serving as a tribute to the mana of Te Ngaengae and its people."
Apollo Projects co-Founder and co-Executive Director Paul Lloyd says being part of communities like Naenae is a privilege they hold dearly
"After 250,000 hours of mahi and collaboration with Hutt City Council
Te Ngaengae stands as a testament to the power of teamwork and the impact Apollo Projects has in delivering meaningful community spaces."
Specially commissioned artworks are prominent at the pool
Lead artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson and partner Natalie Jones - with cultural design guided by Len Hetet - created large-scale artworks with the community to reflect the cultural story of Te Ngaengae
"I am privileged to be able to create this work for the Naenae community which pays tribute to the tupua Te Awamutu and Waiwhetū while also acknowledging the people of today who reside in Naenae," McIntyre Wilson says
Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness is New Zealand’s first aquatic facility to be awarded a prestigious sustainability rating
Awarded a 5 Green Star rating for its environmentally sustainable design by the New Zealand Green Building Council
the certification represents New Zealand excellence in sustainable building
Recycling and reusing 80% of all demolition material from the old pool saved more than 13,000 tonnes of scrap metal and concrete from going to landfill
Others who spoke at this morning’s Tā i te Kawa included Labour Party Leader and Remutaka MP the Rt Hon Chris Hipkins
Infrastructure Minister the Hon Chris Bishop
and Community Advisory Group (CAG) Chair Lyn Bareta
The CAG was established to work alongside the project team and inform decisions as needed
one of Lower Hutt’s most significant infrastructure projects
received $27 million in funding from central government through a partnership with Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP) via the Government’s Infrastructure Reference Group Fund
The 50m Olympic pool has 10 lanes and two moveable bulkheads so it can be used for multiple activities at the same time

is wanted for the murder of Albert Enoka in Naenae
Police have released the name and photo of a man wanted for the murder of a former gang president who was shot dead in a Lower Hutt street last week
Officers are preparing for a gang tangi tomorrow after 39-year-old Albert Enoka died from his injuries on Tuesday afternoon
There is a warrant to arrest 28-year-old Wipuhara Kapene
who Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said was “wanted for murder”
It is understood Kapene is a Black Power gang member
a warrant for Kapene’s arrest was issued this morning,” Ryan said
“Police consider Kapene to be armed and dangerous
Information after the fact can be reported to police online now or via 105. Please use the reference number 241210/3356, or reference Operation Ratio. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111
and police will look to prosecute anyone harbouring or assisting him,” Ryan said
“Please contact police immediately if you have any information that may help.”
Police have also said they will be monitoring the funeral of a “prominent gang member” - understood to be Enoka - in Hutt Valley and Porirua tomorrow
who they described as the victim of last week’s homicide in Naenae
is due to take place in Lower Hutt tomorrow morning
with a procession to Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Porirua afterwards
Hutt Valley Acting Area Commander Inspector Shaun Lingard said police would “maintain a visible presence in Lower Hutt tomorrow morning and will monitor the procession through Lower Hutt to Porirua”
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and those who will be gathering to mourn
Lingard said police would not tolerate unlawful activity
and anyone who is seen to break the law can expect enforcement action
There is likely to be some traffic disruption in the late morning in Lower Hutt
Lower Hutt and the highway network between the Hutt Valley and Porirua
Motorists should expect some temporary disruption and should plan accordingly
Police were nearby when Enoka was shot last week after a verbal altercation on Seddon Street
but despite arriving on the scene within five minutes
they did not see the shooter or his associates and could not save the former Rebels gang president
earlier told media the shooter was described as being about 30with a large build and full facial tattoos covering his whole face
Police were quick to recover the getaway car yesterday - a black 2008 Mercedes Saloon
registration KRP453 - but had not found the gun used in the attack
The car was found at a property on Judd Crescent
and police wanted to hear from anyone who saw it
While police were still working on what happened
Van Den Heuvel said “we know the people involved have links to gangs and we’re still trying to unravel exactly what that looks like”
He said police don’t yet know what the motive was for the shooting
He urged anyone with information “big or small” to speak to police
He and a co-offender were jailed for the methamphetamine-fuelled crime, which happened because he believed his girlfriend was cheating on him.
Enoka received a 10-year prison sentence, which he later successfully appealed down to eight years and five months.
The appeal hinged on whether the court had given him enough of a discount for assistance he offered authorities, the details of which are suppressed.
One woman who lived on the street where the shooting happened said they arrived home and were told by police to “get inside and stay inside”.
She said everybody on the street saw Enoka’s body, and she was concerned for her kids as they were getting home from school.
Another woman, who said she had lived on Seddon St “forever”, was out the back of her property when she heard sirens and assumed the incident was further away.
When she eventually came out front she was told by police to go back inside.
The woman said what happened was “incredible” and she was “shocked”.
“It’s sad, really, I’m still shocked about it,” she said.
Another resident said the broad daylight attack was “just something to process, I guess”.
Melissa Nightingale is a Wellington-based reporter who covers crime, justice, and news in the capital. She joined the Herald in 2016 and has worked as a journalist for 10 years.
Emergency services were called to Seddon St around 3.20pm today, where a man was found critically injured in the street, Inspector Simon De Wit said.
Cordons are in place on Seddon St and residents can expect to see a large police presence as a scene examination is carried out this evening.
"We know this incident will have caused great concern for nearby residents and the wider Naenae community, and we will have an increased presence in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance.
"We would like to hear from anyone who has information which could help our investigation, who has not yet spoken to officers."
Anyone with information has been urged to contact police on 105 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

The curtain drops for good on the College rugby season in Wellington on Monday
with the Condor Sevens being played in its now traditional location at Naenae College
It’s a bumper field this year with 31 teams entered
the most since before the word ‘Covid’ became a thing in our lives
The tournament again serves as the qualifier for the National event at Mount Maunganui’s Blake Park in a few weeks’ time
with the finalists in both the Open Boys and Open Girls earning the right to compete
The 12-team Open Boys field is a strong looking one
with seven of the eight Wellington schools in the 1st XV Premiership taking part
Perennial heavyweights Scots College – the defending Christian Cullen Cup champions – and St Pats Silverstream are the top seeds
the latter making a rare appearance at this event
with St Pats Town the sole and notable absentee
The field is rounded out by Hutt Valley High
and a second side from Silverstream; to their credit this side is made up of players from only their title-winning 2nd and 3rd XV sides
The Open Girls for the Kat Simpkins Cup comprises six teams
headlined by St Mary’s whose decade of dominance has seen them lose just two matches across that time
Sacred Heart loom as their most likely challenger and the two will be favourites to make the final and claim the two spots at the Nationals
Wellington East impressed during the short XVs season and will be a dark horse
Seven teams will front for the U15 Boys after Mana and Scots both withdrew on Friday
Hutt Valley High were the surprising and deserving winners last year but with most of those players no longer eligible they face a mammoth task to repeat
Silverstream and Wellington College are the seeded sides and are joined in the field by St Bernards
Its an unbalanced draw format here where three of the lower seeded teams will be playing off for one spot in the semifinals
the U15 Girls returns after insufficient entries to run it last year
Aotea are top seeds by virtue of their upset win over St Mary’s in the grade final earlier in the year
Notably Tawa College has teams in all for competitions which is a fantastic effort from the school
Play gets underway at 9am with the first playoff action starting at 12.40
The finals commence from 3.20pm with the U15 Girls
followed at 20-minute intervals by the U15 Boys
The draw for morning/pool games is below (subject to change):
