holding that Simplicity Living’s Shane Brealey said people had been “trying to crack” for more than 30 years Andrew Crosby of Xpect Property Development told a story of how 63 students were asked what they would develop on the valuable holding just off Queen St Brealey said there was no point in a residential project because it was not financially feasible Well-located for cruise ship and NZICC trade Don’t need a carpark ratio that would push you into building an expensive basement,” Brealey said four-star hotel above with retail and a through-site link filled with bars and restaurants below “An extension to Britomart but at a more competitive price point.” BusinessDesk reported two years ago that the site was last sold in April 2014 for $26 million Heng Chuang Investment Group is listed as the owner That company is owned by HC Investment Trustee of Victoria Ave please build something here – anything,” said one commenter on Crosby’s post This is one of four projects the practice has designed at Te Arai Links The new home on Te Ara O Kiri Patuparaoa Anake is owned by a person involved in finance in Auckland The architects explained in their NZIA entry that a palimpsest is a “form that embodies writing where each intervention builds upon the traces of what came before” a word the architects explained as “a memory of experience an intentional play on movement between contrasting conditions It carries the imprint of the site – a trace of the beach once experienced -while also registering the ongoing erosion Planning Focus did the applications for consents and other regulatory work Climate Control did the mechanical services and the landscaping was by RTB and Jared Lockhart Design The architects’ description of the work referred to unique architectural elements tree-lined forest compressed movement and filtered light culminating in the sudden openness of the beach “The flicker of light through silhouetted trees creates a dramatic spatial and perceptual transition,” their award entry said “It acts as a counterpoint: both courtyard and pavilion A compressed yet gradual shift emerges between a heightened sense of enclosure to the west and an open black-silhouetted walls toward the projected openness of the eastern end the experience of threshold and transition becomes blurred and informal gradually transforming from one condition to another as you move across the house “The project was conceived as a weekend retreat for a small Auckland-based family designed to be shared with friends and loved ones and intended to endure across generations.” the elevated site is perched on dunes overlooking the Pacific with uninterrupted views of the horizon The surrounding landscape is defined by rugged coastal contours soft undulating dunes and an extensive pine forest creating a unique juxtaposition between land and sea introduces distinctive textures and light conditions to the site which spans across a hectare of rolling sand dunes An interplay of natural elements between forest and beach offers a compelling context The house responds to the openness of the sea while drawing warmth and intimacy from the surrounding woodland The natural context of the site is a balance of exposure and shelter which is intentionally echoed in the architectural response The site within Te Arai Links requires compliance with the Te Arai South design guidelines These covenants require the building to sit within a prescribed platform designated for each site with a maximum building coverage of 1000sq m and a maximum height of 8m above a nominated ground datum The covenants also prescribe aspects of the architectural character required for the development reviewed by a panel to ensure that each site achieves an approach which is subservient to the dominant topography of the immediate landscape and colour saturation compatible with the immediate landscape context membrane roofing or a combination of systems The roof pitch must be no greater than 27.5 degrees A low-lying roof to meet this requirement was achieved in a combination of membrane and profiled metal with a sculptural aluminium perimeter Exterior cladding is typically limited to natural timber steel cladding systems and natural stone but the design committee must approve it “The use of dark textured concrete was not in strict compliance with the design guidelines the poetic reference to the pine trees and coherence with the site allowed for this material to be approved,” the architects said A refined yet durable material palette responds directly to the natural surroundings Precast concrete walls with a scalloped texture echo the rhythm of the surrounding pine tree trunks The textured surface and tint reference the darkness of bark adding depth and character while achieving a low-maintenance exterior the concrete slab with a sculptural tapering underside was coloured to match the surrounding sand That further connected the architecture to the site Steel and concrete timber construction form the levitating square roof The fascia and soffit are finished with Resene Sandtex applied to match the warmth and texture of the parallel concrete slab below and the sand it sits above The remainder of the plan is delineated with sweeping glazed doors which allow for the outlook to be fully appreciated towards the horizon Blurring the threshold between the interior and exterior a continuous slab and ceiling finish is achieved between both the distinctive precast concrete panels carry through seamlessly to define the northern and southern passages Full-height oak panelling and cabinetry form a silky counterpoint to the rugged concrete The wire-brushed timber grain adds a natural element and softness to the palette accented with bespoke blackened and patinated metal hardware Silver travertine stone forms the sculptural kitchen island and working surfaces The warm tones and linear stratification visually connect with the tone A subtle sandblasted limestone in bespoke tile formats is used to achieve the desired arrangements while cohering with the adjacent warm tones of the concrete floor slab both of which are informed by the sand itself material selection has been meticulously considered to anchor the home in its context while achieving the necessary resilience required for the coastal environment The Takapuna Beach Holiday Park is earmarked for the biggest upgrade in almost a century That may cost up to $5 million but could be less Steve Edwards of operator SJE Takapuna said $3.5m to $5m could be spent there but the exact spend had not yet been quantified because it all depends on the consenting process “We have not finalised building details yet because we have to get the resource consent first “I’ve been involved in holiday parks for 24 years We just want to do what’s right for the holiday park and good of the community.” He plans to crane pre-fabricated buildings on to the reserve land which the company has leased for about 33 years “There are a lot of people who do this type of building work We haven’t aligned ourselves with anyone yet It all comes down to the design of the building which will determine how and when we build.” four one-bedroom units and six basic or standard cabins: He can’t give prices to be charged for renting those places per day or week in advance of the Council’s plan to turn one of the city’s busiest golf courses into a stormwater reservoir environmental concerns and the loss of irreplaceable green space which includes Takapuna and Hillcrest locals and technical experts from across the North Shore has announced a public meeting this month in a bid to halt the proposed redevelopment of the Takapuna Golf Course into what they describe as “a fenced-off concrete basin disguised as a wetland.” Local residents group spokesperson Emma Hulse says the proposed removal of the century-old golf course caught many locals by surprise “Most of us only found out about this through a newspaper article; there was no formal notice or meaningful engagement from the council When we attended the initial community meeting just vague promises and a concept sketch of troughs filled with water Residents walked away confused and very concerned.” who formed a local community group in response says many families are alarmed not only by the scale of the proposed works but also by the rapid timeline with excavation suggested to begin as early as October this year “There’s a real sense that this is being pushed through without transparency Residents were told this wouldn’t happen until 2027 but the Council’s own documents obtained through an Official Information Request mention digging starting later this year The Takapuna Golf Course and driving range is NZ’s most visited public course drawing over 220,000 visits annually and serving as a key entry-level facility for golfers of all ages and backgrounds Locals say the space is also used daily for walking particularly as urban intensification in the area reduces access to open space “We’re not opposed to better flood protection proven alternatives that don’t destroy one of the last major green spaces in our area.” The community group has aligned itself with the golf course’s operators who have presented an alternative design integrating stormwater detention within the current fairways preserving both the flood protection function and the recreational use Hulse says the alternative model created by an international golf course architect offers a commercially viable lease arrangement that would save the council millions in maintenance costs the Council’s plan would see the proposed wetlands left without ongoing upkeep and we have asked who will manage this waterlogged site?” Residents also raised concerns about public safety and water quality issues if wetlands are left unmanaged including mosquitoes “The public meeting will be held at Takapuna Golf its land into a flood water catchment The proposal would see 20 hectares of Takapuna Golf Club Takapuna Golf Club spokesperson Stephen Dowd said in a statement lease renewal negotiations had been halted recently by the council prior to the release of the wetland proposal The council was hoping to use the land to capture around 550,000 litres of water during an intense weather event The Wairau catchment was one of the most severely flooded areas during the 2023 Auckland Anniversary floods and two lives were lost But Dowd said the council's proposal was unnecessary and flood mitigation options could readily be integrated into the existing golf course design "What we know from international best practice in this space is that courses around the world are incorporating the latest flood mitigation mechanisms into their design "The proposal in its current form does not address any alternative design options where additional water catchment can be integrated into the existing layout "We understand from experience that the course can already hold a significant proportion of this volume and we believe there is significant scope to increase this with the addition of a series of smaller wetlands we can preserve this national asset and offer additional flood protection to residents and businesses in the area "We want to continue to provide an entry-level golf facility where people are under no pressure We have been and are an essential part of golf in Auckland and New Zealand for generations of Kiwis," he said the Takapuna Golf Club was considered a critical part of New Zealand's golf tourism infrastructure Auckland Council Head of Sustainable Partnerships Tom Mansell said in a statement that a wide range of flood mitigation options had been considered "A comprehensive range of interventions have been considered with the goal of delivering maximum flood reduction benefits in both the short and long-term One of the proposed options includes developing AF Thomas Park into a recreational flood storage wetland," he said the redeveloped park would become part of a blue-green network able to be used by the community for the majority of the time and could incorporate walking and recreational facilities as well as a wetland that floods in large storm events similar to Greenslade Reserve in Northcote." The redevelopment would mitigate flooding risk for 10 hectares of residential properties "While we acknowledge that repurposing the park will impact its users council is facing difficult challenges brought on by extreme weather and increased flooding We're working to reduce flood risk for homes power and water substations as well as balancing land use and recreational needs." The statement emphasised the importance of community input including stakeholders such as the Takapuna Golf Club "The changes to land use in the park would be done with community input and would not commence for several years," Mansell said "If the business case for this project is approved by the council there will be more opportunities for engagement and for the community to be involved in the design "Addressing the extensive flood issues in the Wairau area will require a phased approach We will need to work collaboratively with a variety of funders and members of the community taking a catchment-wide approach to ensure the right outcomes are achieved for the community." Holiday Park is to get 20 new removable pre-fabricated accommodation and facility buildings craned to the site including a new two-level administration and staff block Public submissions are sought after plans were announced by the park’s private operator SJE Takapuna Last decade, fears were that the grounds would shut sports teams and people between homes or jobs wouldn’t be able to stay there any more But the huge new scheme indicates confidence in its future The application opens for submissions from April 29 and shows many trees and shrubs are planned to be removed and replaced with ones more suited to the environment Land use and stormwater discharge consent is sought along with earthworks and drainage and the removal of 54 trees or shrubs the majority of these being non-native species Plans are to plant 31 native trees or shrubs A two-storey administration and staff building The application includes the construction of new sealed internal access ways landscaping and a new fence along the Alison Ave boundary The proposal is a non-complying activity and submissions are due by May 26 caravan parking and tent camping areas are proposed seven motel units along the western boundary four accessible studio units along the northern boundary and one accessible motel unit near the southern boundary of the site Plans are for a kitchen and ablution building as well as a playground area to be centrally located within the site A separate ablution building is also proposed near the northern end of the site Small tent-only areas are proposed at the northwestern and northeastern corners of the site The reception building is to have a reception area The upper floor will have accommodation for two workers and another as the duty manager’s residence The duty manager’s residence is to be a studio unit with a bathroom and the manager’s residence is to have two bedrooms Up to four people are proposed to stay in those units The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board does not think the application should be publicly notified “The decision to have this development at the Takapuna Campground has already happened and we should do what we can to enable the completion of this project We are disappointed that trees and shrubs need to be removed,” the application quoted the board as saying SJE Takapuna has used council’s cultural value assessment service and controversial proposal to convert Takapuna Golf Course into a floodwater catchment area aiming to mitigate the city's increasing flood risks The plan involves transforming the popular public 18-hole course into a multi-purpose green space designed to absorb excess stormwater during heavy rains and protecting lives and properties," says Tom Mansell the council's head of sustainable partnerships "This catchment was absolutely devastated by the floods in 2023.. so we had to look at ways to mitigate the flooding But this area at the golf course can be used for storage of water to take the flooding away from the streets and houses and store it here." who played golf on the course as a youngster "Currently the golf course can hold about 60 million litres of water it will hold over half a billion litres of water we were just in shock," club spokesperson Stephen Dowd tells The Detail "It was like being hit with a blunt instrument really." He says they only found out about the proposal during recent lease negotiations with the Auckland Council why does it seem like they want to destroy the golf course?" a public petition has been launched to save the course on AF Thomas Park I think Ryan Fox practiced at the driving range .. we have had a pro-am with the best New Zealand golfers here A lot of great young golfers have started their careers here." the course would either be halved to a nine-hole course the project would be a major undertaking onsite and natural drainage areas to prevent nearby streets and homes from flooding the area would offer walking trails and recreational facilities The move is in response to growing concerns over Auckland's vulnerability to extreme weather events "It would help reduce velocity," says Hills "It would help reduce the amount of water heading down the catchment at once and it would help hold some of the water until the rain has stopped "This will help reduce flooding and it will reduce the speed and harmfulness "But it's also important that the whole community has a say on this." But Dowd says there are options that could save lives He's met with civil engineers to discuss viable options "Courses around the world have been designed to help manage water during flooding events and there is considerable scope to increase the Takapuna course's existing capacity "We are confident we can come up with something that is workable for both parties." Takapuna Golf Course would be impacted under a proposal to use A.F golf architect Kristine Kerr believes flood relief could be achieved with tweaks to the current golf course that would see the fairways double as water storage That alternative will be presented during the Transport Resilience and Infrastructure Committee meeting on Thursday morning A proposed business case for the council’s design consenting and early enabling works for improved flood resilience will also be presented who has worked on the development of more than 40 courses worldwide has come up with a reimagined course that would both keep an 18-hole course and allow for water catchment through lowering and reshaping the current course The alternative plan also included perimeter walkways and cycleways and aimed to retain trees where possible while planting new ones as well The design was made based on calculations made by specialist engineers and was created to show that flood storage objectives could be achieved without getting rid of the golf course “Courses around the world are being designed and can be modified to support flood mitigation during extreme weather events,” Kerr said “The ability to integrate stormwater storage within a multi-use recreational environment is a well-established practice internationally and is being successfully implemented in major cities across Europe thousands more people will be able to enjoy the space all while the course serves a vital role in flood management.” Kerr said the key was redesigning the course in a way that integrated the required flood-relief functions without compromising playability The proposed modifications would see the fairways strategically contoured to temporarily store stormwater during heavy rainfall it can not only continue to thrive but also evolve into a world-class multi-purpose facility that benefits golfers international visitors and the wider public There is no reason Auckland can’t adopt global best practices to achieve this.” the park would become part of a blue-green network able to be used by the community for the majority of the time The work would be carried out in stages; the first of which would include the design and consenting of critical flood management infrastructure at A.F the council’s head of sustainable partnerships (healthy waters and flood resilience) said this first stage was a critical step for the Wairau blue-green network “The redevelopment of the park would provide the equivalent to 220 Olympic-sized swimming pools or 550 million litres of water storage in a flood event which is a significant increase from the park’s current 60 million litre capacity,” he said “This would protect downstream residential properties as well as road flooding to Nile Waterloo and Alma Roads in Milford – which are access points for North Shore Hospital and Westlake Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools.” Christopher Reive joined the Herald sports team in 2017 bringing the same a new proposal by Auckland Council turned into a wetland to help reduce future flooding in the area The course said it welcomed about 200,000 visitors each year said changes to land use in the park would be done with community input and if approved would not be introduced for several years we will engage with community and key stakeholders to review both the golfing and wider recreation needs of the North Shore,” Mansell said “This will inform how we develop this space into a vibrant recreation area for the community to enjoy and there will be time to transition the golf club members to other facilities in the community as required “It’s really important that we get the balance right and we can only do that by working with the Wairau community.” Club spokesman Stephen Dowd said lease renewal negotiations were put on hold by the council recently before plans for the new proposal were released A public meeting about the proposal will be held at Takapuna Golf Course on Saturday March 8 from 2pm-4pm “What we know from international best practice in this space is that courses around the world are incorporating the latest flood mitigation mechanisms into their design,” Dowd said “The proposal in its current form does not address any alternative design options where additional water catchment can be integrated into the existing layout “The council is looking to capture around 550,000 litres of water during an intense weather event.” Dowd believed the course could already hold a significant proportion of that and that there was scope to increase it by adding a series of smaller wetlands rather than creating one large reservoir “In this way we can preserve this national asset and offer additional flood protection to residents and businesses in the area “We want to continue to provide an entry-level golf facility where people are under no pressure We have been and are an essential part of golf in Auckland and New Zealand for generations of Kiwis.” part of council’s Making Space for Water programme It follows three previous projects approved to improve flood resilience in areas hit hard by the Auckland Anniversary floods in 2023; two in Māngere and the other in Rānui The proposal comes after Wairau Valley was badly affected during the 2023 floods Mansell said “a comprehensive range of interventions” were considered with one of the proposed options involving the golf course “This area is proposed as the most effective short-term solution to reduce flooding in the Wairau catchment and essential for enabling future flood mitigation in Nile Rd and the Wairau Valley commercial area later stages of works that are planned would not be feasible the redevelopment of the golf course would reduce the risk of flooding across 10ha of residential properties as well as road flooding to Nile Rd “While we acknowledge that repurposing the park will impact its users We’re working to reduce flood risk for homes power and water substations as well as balancing land use and recreational needs.” Mansell said addressing the extensive flood issues in the area would require a phased approach and would require collaboration with a variety of funders and members of the community “By restoring the wetland in this area and reshaping the flow paths to better integrate nature into flood management the surrounding homes and neighbourhoods will be better protected in future heavy rain events “Combined with the works in other areas like Tōtara Vale and Nile Rd making more space for water to flow through the Wairau Valley catchment “These projects will not only mitigate future flooding risks but also deliver benefits such as improved green spaces and continue to build on the strong community connections with their neighbourhoods which already exist.” Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Toni van Tonder has stepped down from her position as chair and elected member of the board providing her resignation effective 18 February 2025 in a large-scale apartment scheme has been announced for Takapuna - bringing the number of new schemes to three in plans worth more than $800 million That follows two other schemes: the 106-unit Takapuna Central announced in 2022 and a 350-unit tower on the ex-Gasometer site bringing the total to 669 units in the three schemes Work is yet to begin on any of the sites but Takapuna is zoned for intensification under the Auckland Unitary Plan cited as having a coastal setting with a mix of commercial and residential activities This is the newest scheme launched and to be developed at 6-10 The Strand and 21 rising 10 levels on land now owned by HND CB Eleven buildings of two to four levels each are planned there the planner said blocks rising up to 10 levels would be built “The proposal will deliver four apartment buildings up to 10 storeys in height containing 213 apartments with a mixture of ground floor retail rooftop areas and basement parking all supported by multiple public pedestrian linkages through the site connecting The Strand Hurstmere Green and Hurstmere Road to the Takapuna Beach Reserve,” Campbell Brown said The planners said it had been a long and often challenging process that achieved a highly positive level of support from the Auckland Urban Design Panel an independent review by Isthmus Architecture Ltd and a strong collaborative relationship with the council’s planning team the consented development is the result of multiple design iterations in response to a thorough design-led process and we are proud to have achieved this result with an exceptional consultant team and a client willing to ensure the best outcome for the site and this iconic location,” the planner said Scheme announced in 2022: Takapuna Central site Initially, 106 units are planned as part of a larger $400 million apartment scheme at 40 Anzac St and 38 Hurstmere Rd This land was sold by Eke Panuku beside the cinema on what is now part of the carpark Developer between Huron St But no works have begun since McConnell Property’s announcement two years ago via project director Tony McKee Property observers noticed a lack of action since and wondered about the prospect of raising money for such a big scheme in the economic downturn Locals compared it to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa tower due to its height in the beachside suburb even though the site is at least two blocks from the beach McConnell Property has the project on its site under the headline Takapuna town centre the design for its tower inspired by stepped Takapuna sandstone cliffs the Takapuna build-to-rent apartment project on the old Gasometer site will feature a slender 38-storey tower with spectacular 360-degree views across the Hauraki Gulf Rangitoto and out to the Coromandel,” McConnell’s site says Working in partnership with Cedar Pacific this Takapuna development will deliver a world class BTR project with Greenstar 5 and Homestar 6 sustainability,” it says The tower would be the Shore’s first build-to-rent scheme and have a café The site remains fenced but without any work there The first stage of a fourth large Takapuna apartment scheme is nearing completion That is Amaia Residents are about to start moving in as construction on the initial stage is nearly done won approval to develop the first two of what will be three blocks on Esmonde Rd’s Harbourside church near kuaka or bar-tailed godwit grounds at Shoal Bay Initial plans were for two seven-level blocks on the 2.1ha site Units of one-bedroom plus a study were advertised from $789,000 two-bedroom apartments for $989,000 and three bedrooms from $1.75m the Herald reported how a much larger $350m scheme was planned for 543 units But then in 2022, plans emerged for an even larger Amaia: 15 buildings up to 16 levels with architects comparing the scheme to the profile of a famous French island Jasmax likened the higher building form in the centre of 15 new buildings as akin to the much-loved Mont Saint-Michel in its planned built appearance form Two seven-level buildings are in that first $350m 543-unit stage Smaller new apartment blocks have also risen such as the new ones The city’s economy depends on big events of all kinds, and none are bigger. The wake-up-and-smell-the-coffee analysis of the cup defence in Barcelona last year says there’s nearly $2 billion of economic activity at stake which wants us to learn to say yes more often Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Finance Minister Nicola Willis have rejected an appeal from the council for the Crown to contribute $75 million to secure the defence in Auckland they’d earn more than that in the GST on hotel rooms “This was a golden opportunity to utilise purpose-built infrastructure and reap a timely economic return,” said Heart of the City chief executive Viv Beck Tourism Minister Louise Upston also has the Just Say No gene. She’s rejected the idea of a bed tax, despite the pleas of Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown and his deputy, Desley Simpson the mayor of Queenstown and Local Government New Zealand That crack about GST wasn’t random: for some reason that doesn’t prevail in many other parts of the world it seems the Government is the only one allowed to tax visitors I reported earlier this week that Auckland, with 36% of the country’s population, accounts for only 38% of economic activity. Main cities are supposed to do much better has 13% of the British population and produces 23% of its GDP; Paris has 18% and accounts for 31% of the French economy Will the Government be producing an Auckland plan that addresses this any time soon Will it even be able to do so if it doesn’t take big events and visitor taxes seriously Te Whau Pathway is on the move This beautifully curving shared path follows the Whau River inland from Te Atatū and will one day snake for 12km all the way to Green Bay It’s the old portage route for carrying your waka from one harbour to the other with the council contributing a few million more but is being developed by the Whau Coastal Walkway Environmental Trust residents near the western end were given the chance to walk and ride along the sections completed and now under construction It believes the pathway will be used by 113,150 cyclists and 226,300 pedestrians It will provide a safe route for 18,000 students attending 38 schools in the Whau catchment area It will also connect to 33 parks and reserves and the suburbs of Te Atatū South thanks to the existing shared paths at Te Atatū it will link to safe routes all the way into the city Fletcher Building has announced that in June it will close its Clever Core factory the country’s largest high-tech plant making walls Fletcher said it hoped to cut on-site build times “from 22 weeks to around six-to-10 weeks” Core structural components would be mass-produced in the factory in as little as a day double-glazed windows and allowances for wiring and plumbing” would then be “transferred to build sites and constructed into the weather-tight core of a house by specially trained builders” the company says: “Despite the many benefits the volumes required to be commercially viable have not materialised due in part to the challenging market downturn and a reluctance within the New Zealand housing industry to adopt off-site manufacturing at scale.” Relevant to this: Stats NZ announced last month that new-home building consents fell 7.2% in the year to January 2025 Auckland Transport (AT) is installing “in-ground” lighting for inner-city on-road car parks where you can park at some times Network operations manager Andrew Allen explained this week that this was “easier to understand” than signs which he believed people found difficult to decipher “We’ve taken it to the Waitematā Local Board,” he said AT is trialling an AI (artificial intelligence) method of identifying the excessive use of road cones No word on whether it’ll send out robots to vaporise them AT chief executive Dean Kimpton has taken to pointing out that only 30% of the cones on Auckland roads were put there by his organisation He wants everyone who puts out cones to put up signs saying who did this AT has awarded a billion-dollar contract to Ritchies Transport to run “expanded services” in the south and west over the next nine years 4: Vibrating tables. Both were armed with various weapons. “You weren’t able to distinguish anything about them, so they were prepared for it,” he said. The men began smashing the safety glass at the entrance to the eatery with hammers before entering, cutting themselves on glass surrounding the door during the process. “[They were] wielding sharp objects as well which we’re still yet to identify, but there were screwdrivers lying on the ground and things like that this morning,” Smith said. “[They] very aggressively came in behind the counter and they were looking for cash.” Smith said all five staff inside the eatery were threatened by the armed offenders, who didn’t say much, but demanded cash. “[They were] really, really aggressive and the staff were holding chairs pretty much while they were swinging hammers around.” The pair ripped out the restaurant’s cash float containing $400 before fleeing in the vehicle they arrived in – ignoring the high-end alcohol kept in the restaurant. Smith – who wasn’t at the restaurant at the time, but was called while it was unfolding – said he arrived to see the destruction and armed police on the scene. “[They] made a hell of a mess. Bottles and cans were everywhere, tools were ripped off. Glass was everywhere.” He said staff were badly shaken after the incident, and he stayed with them for a few hours while police took statements. Among those, Smith said, was a Japanese national who had only recently come to New Zealand and just finished her first evening shift at the restaurant. “This is what she is greeted with. It was pure aggression and opportunism.” Smith said the restaurant was fully booked for lunch and dinner on Monday, forecasting they had lost about $10,000 in sales due to the break-in. He had been calling all customers who had booked on Monday to advise of the 24-hour closure. “Thousands of dollars worth of damage and lost earnings for $400 cash... I feel embarrassed to be a New Zealander sometimes when this is what’s going on. “Emotionally it’s not good for the staff and that’s the main thing, money doesn’t matter. We’re a successful place, we lead the pack and it’s just terrible what’s happened really for the staff.” It would take a while for staff to recover. “Certainly in the last 10 years since we’ve been here, we haven’t seen anything like this before.” Police this morning said they were working hard to find those responsible and appealed for information from the public. “The offenders have taken a number of items before leaving in a vehicle prior to police arrival.” Police confirmed the weapons were not firearms and nobody was injured. Smith said police had been conducting forensics on Monday and among evidence at the scene was blood from an assailant after allegedly cutting themselves on the safety glass. An NZME photographer said police cordoned off The Strand while they investigated the incident last night. Photos from the scene show glass strewn over the floor of the restaurant from the smashed windows. A staff member from a neighbouring restaurant earlier told the Herald they ushered diners into the back of their premises while the robbery took place next door. He said one manager from Tokyo Bar came in screaming and crying after the incident, saying they had been robbed and asking for help. Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy "They're just a negotiating point I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point "What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part 'I'm going to negotiate case by case'." Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs." Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing" particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented "I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions" "I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view but I don't think we should panic either and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said "There are growing markets around the world It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us." Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs middle-income consumers or consumers in America do because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade." Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane for the other it has caused problems for 36 years It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him “You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.” Another Shane William Pritchard had been born in Otago They were separated by just two weeks and about 50 miles – one growing up in Mosgiel the other in Milton – but also by the lives they’d been leading To watch the full video story go to TVNZ+ Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.” he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on “I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action 'Anything I could get away with Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health not realising the constant stress it placed on his life John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.” he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point He described going for days at a time unable to eat or sleep wondering what might happen next "Am I going to be in a position where they've got me in handcuffs or I've got debt collectors coming to the door?" ...You're spiralling into this black hole." He started taking anti-anxiety medication which helped And events regarding Milton Shane seemed to settle Milton Shane was charged for fishing without a licence in Twizel and failing to comply with fisheries officers But a court registrar incorrectly entered the birth date of Mosgiel Shane in the system both Shanes were being chased to pay the $1530 fine It was Mosgiel Shane who spotted the error and rang the court He also sent a statement from his manager saying he’d not been fishing in Twizel that day The reply he got was to say he’d been given the wrong form and that they wouldn’t accept his proof They just wanted to know how I was going to pay the fine.” The first Milton Shane knew about this was when Fair Go told him Mosgiel Shane had been chased for the fine He was told to pay up or face the consequences feeling he shouldn’t have to pay good money to correct someone else’s mistake But it cost Mosgiel Shane over $5000 in legal fees and took months of back and forth between him “Why should anybody have to pay their own money to right somebody else's wrongs and prove who they are I’m sick and tired of proving who I am all the time.” He wanted the Ministry of Justice to take responsibility and reimburse him for his legal costs saying court staff such as the registrar in this case have immunity if they make mistakes such as the one made here and if I make a mistake and it's affecting my client that it's going to cost them money to rectify a mistake that I've made.” he deserves a million apologies from those guys,” she says Milton Shane told Fair Go he still gets in trouble but wants the other Shane to know he doesn’t use his birth date anymore And he had a message for him: “We’ve got to get it sorted for you so you can have a good life with you and your family because I’m trying to get my life together with my son and my grandson” He offers to meet to see if they can sort it out together but I’m not interested in meeting him,.” says Mosgiel Shane He says he doesn’t hold any grudges and accepts Milton Shane’s apology And he believes the only way for that to happen is for the courts and the Ministry of Justice to give him a guarantee that mix-ups won’t occur in the future Fair Go asked the Ministry of Justice to appear in person to apologise and provide reassurance to Shane of its plans to guard against these mistakes The Ministry declined our request to be on camera saying any comment on an individual case would compromise the independence of the courts as the Ministry operates separately But it did send a written apology directly to Mosgiel Shane It also admitted mistakes can occur in clerical records but said instructions were clear and the importance of getting things right had been emphasised to staff Mosgiel Shane isn’t totally convinced that’s the end of it “All I want is for the Ministry of Justice and the courts to do their job I'd like to live without this hanging over me all the time his criminal check has come back showing a clean slate The government is making it harder to make a claim for pay equity that will cut costs There have been massive pay equity claims in recent years for nurses and resthome workers Workplace Minister Brooke van Velden announced the moves to raise the threshold for proving work has been historically undervalued to support a claim on Tuesday saying changes back in 2020 had created problems "Claims have been able to progress without strong evidence of undervaluation and there have been very broad claims where it is difficult to tell whether differences in pay are due to sex-based discrimination or other factors." Claims were concentrated in the public sector with costs to the Crown of all settlements so far totalling $1.78 billion a year "The changes I am proposing will significantly reduce costs to the Crown," she said "The changes will discontinue current pay equity claims." Van Velden told Midday Report she believes in pay equity but the current thresholds were "a bit too loose" Asked how she ensure women were not hurt by this the minister said "I'm a woman and I support women who work" "I also support removing gender based discriminations from our workforces but what I don't support are muddied laws and unclear laws," she said "So these changes are better for all women who are working where we can genuinely say hand on heart that what they are finding with their claims is genuine gender based discrimination." Van Velden told reporters at Parliament any current claims would be stopped and need to restart under the new threshold to show "genuine" gender discrimination and make sure the comparators were right She gave a figure of 33 current claims that would be stopped as the legislation was put through under urgency "You have librarians who've been comparing themselves to transport engineers We have admin and clerical staff at Health New Zealand comparing themselves to mechanical engineers." Social workers had compared themselves to air traffic controllers "We don't believe we have that setting right." Any comparison would now be between female employees and male employees at the same employer "But you cannot go fishing for discrimination across the New Zealand workforce." All current settled claims would continue but the government was drawing "a line in the sand" "We're not stopping claims." The nurse's union has this year had at least 10 pay equity claims in play The PSA union has said pay equity claims and settlements had resulted in significant improvements in pay and working conditions for many workers The union said the changes would make it "impossible for people in female-dominated professions to be paid fairly" "Women across the country will pay the price for this," PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons said "The government's changes today are a dark day for New Zealand women as the government says it will repeal the pay equity law and extinguish 33 existing claims in a constitutional overreach "The PSA is exploring all possible avenues to oppose these unconstitutional amendments and stop this attack on women We will not be deterred in our fight to achieve pay equity for all." "This is a blatant and shameful attack on women," New Zealand Nurses organisation chief executive Paul Goulter said "Women in workforces predominantly performed by female employees have been underpaid and undervalued for generations That is what pay equity claims seek to rectify," he said "This move by the government will widen the pay gap between men and women." The union had at least 10 pay current pay claims across Aged Care These cover many nurses and support workers The E tū union also called the changes an attack on women and a green light to pay them less for work of equal value The government was pulling the rug out from under a 13-year-long fight in aged care "These changes are not about evidence — they are about saving money by keeping women underpaid," national secretary Rachel Mackintosh said in a statement A number of unions have called a snap rally at Parliament at 1pm today in light of the announcement the Council of Trade Unions and representatives of other unions say they will be "protesting the government's attack on women and the destruction of progress on pay equity..." rnz.co.nz Hawke's Bay iwi Ngāti Kahungunu has been unsuccessful in its bid to buy back the mountain Kahurānaki but the iwi says its connection to the land will always remain Kahurānaki Station - a 1156 hectare sheep and beef farm south of Havelock North which includes the peak of the mountain - came up for sale earlier this year and the iwi launched a fundraising campaign to buy it The campaign to bring the Kahurānaki back into Māori ownership was called He Maunga Ka Taea and included a 10-day hīkoi from Māhia to Kahurānaki It raised more than $95,000 on crowd funding platform koha.kiwi Hastings-based post-settlement governance entity Tamatea Pōkai Whenua Trust submitted a tender on behalf of the iwi Chairman Pōhatu Paku said the trust was the only local entity to tender for the Station and they were saddened and disappointed by the outcome The trust had approached the tender on the basis it was presented Paku acknowledged the young and emerging iwi members who had generated the groundswell of support for the tender and for the longer term status of the mountain ki tēnā o tātau e titikaha nei ki tēnei kaupapa I just want to acknowledge and mihi to everybody that has connected with this kaupapa Paku said the trust would be engaging with the station's new owners at an appropriate time to convey the iwi's history and also set out their aspirations "The continuation of the protection of our wāhi tapu (sacred sites) is significantly important to us Continued access to the mountain would also be a high priority "The previous owners were quite open for Kura for people running kaupapa and also those that wished to ascend the maunga they allowed that they identified that it was culturally significant to us all." Kim Kardashian thought she was going to be raped and killed when criminals broke into her bedroom in central Paris, tied her up and stole more than US$6 million in jewellery. More than eight years later, 10 people will go on trial in Paris over the robbery, abduction and kidnapping of the media personality and the concierge of the residence where she was staying during Paris Fashion Week the night of October 2, 2016. Kardashian’s lawyers said she will testify in person at the trial starting Monday and scheduled to run through May 23. "Ms Kardashian is reserving her testimony for the court and jury and does not wish to elaborate further at this time," they said. "She has great respect and admiration for the French justice system and has been treated with great respect by the French authorities. "She wishes the trial to proceed in an orderly fashion, in accordance with French law and with respect for all parties to the case." In interviews and on her family’s reality TV show, Kardashian has described being terrified as robbers pointed a gun at her. In a 2020 appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show, she tearfully recalled thinking: "This is the time I’m going to get raped. I’m like, ‘What is happening? Are we gonna die? Just tell them I have children. I have babies, I have a husband, I have a family.'" Twelve people were originally expected in the defendants’ box. One of them has died, and another is seriously ill and can't be tried. According to the investigation, five of the 10 defendants were present at the scene of the robbery. The French press has dubbed them The Granddad Robbers because the main defendants are elderly and have careers as bank robbers with long criminal records. Kardashian told investigators she was taken to a bathroom next to her bedroom and placed in the bathtub. Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth. She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room. She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft. Shortly afterwards, Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured. She filed a complaint, adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children. According to her testimony and that of the concierge, at least one of the suspects had a handgun, with which he threatened the victims. The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery, including a ring of great value, estimated to be worth more than US$6 million (NZ$10 million). Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered. Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime, as their DNA was found at the crime scene. The alleged ringleader, 68-year-old Aomar Aït Khedache, is one of two suspected robbers who allegedly entered the apartment. Nicknamed "Old Omar", his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian. He left the hotel on a bicycle, as did two other robbers, then met his son, who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station. The second robber said he tied up the concierge with cables but did not go up to Kardashian’s apartment. Yunice Abbas, 71, said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area, making sure the escape route was clear. He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian, but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime. Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision. In 2021, he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian. Didier Dubreucq, 69, known as "Blue Eyes", is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat. He denies any involvement, although he was filmed by CCTV cameras and numerous telephone contacts with the other co-defendants show his involvement, according to the investigation. The other defendants are suspected of providing information about Kardashian’s presence in the apartment. Others are accused of playing a role in the resale of the jewellery in Antwerp, Belgium. Soundgarden — with the late Chris Cornell as singer — get into the Hall on their third nomination. They follow two other grunge acts in the Hall — Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company get in having become radio fixtures with such arena-rock staples as Feel Like Makin’ Love, Can’t Get Enough and Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy. I’ll tell them to drop dead, so you better do it quick while I’m still smiling." Lauper rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as Time After Time and Girls Just Want To Have Fun and went on to win a Tony Award for Kinky Boots.
