Woolworths will close the doors of its Te Atatū Peninsula supermarket on Thursday
The site of the building has been bought by Foodstuffs and will reopen as a New World next year
the 15,000 residents of the suburb must travel to Te Atatū South to find their closest supermarket or to Pak'n Save on Lincoln Road
Woolworths said it was sad to leave the community and wanted to thank customers for their support
The shop would close at 6pm Thursday and staff would attend a dinner for closure
"We're pleased that many of our team will be continuing their careers with us at nearby stores
Others have decided to make a change and move on to new opportunities and we wish them all the best
"We look forward to continuing to serve many locals at our Te Atatū South and other nearby stores
we'd thank the community for their kind words and support over the last few weeks."
While RNZ research showed that the distance Te Atatū Peninsula residents must travel to a supermarket for the next year is not large by national standards
marketing expert Mike Lee said the inconvenience was upsetting locals
Lee is a professor of marketing at the University of Auckland business school
"The traffic around that part of town is absolutely horrendous," he said
"Getting out of the peninsula towards Henderson could take up to half an hour
an unfamiliar shopping environment and half an hour back
compared to a 5-10-minute trip down the road that they are used to."
He said the population density of the area meant the new owners would likely want to get the supermarket up and running as quickly as they could
"I don't think residents need to fear a lack of business incentive in terms of reopening a New World on that site
I also don't think it will affect the property prices in the short term
even though convenience and proximity to amenities is one of the key features of a good property location
but it is unfortunate that the residents will have to put up with a significant amount of inconvenience for the next year at least."
retail consultant Chris Wilkinson said people formed habits with their shopping and got used to places they visited
which was why there had been an emotional reaction to the absence of a supermarket on the peninsula for a period
"These types of things can show you that familiarity
convenience are really important things and drivers in shopping decisions."

Fifteen thousand Auckland residents are today set to lose access to their suburb’s supermarket for one year as Te Atatū Peninsula’s Woolworths closes down
Woolworths Te Atatū supermarket shuts its doors for good at 6pm after rival company Foodstuffs bought the land it sits on with the intention of opening a New World supermarket on the site next year
The closure has left some locals concerned about their access to groceries
while Woolworths is today giving out treats to those visiting the store before its 6pm closure
the company’s New Zealand director of stores
said his team were saddened but also grateful for “many years of support”
“We will close early today [at 6pm] and be giving out small treats to customers shopping with us as our way of saying thank you,” Stockill said
“We’ll also be holding a catered dinner for our team to acknowledge the end of our chapter in Te Atatū.”
Stockill said he was pleased many of the store’s staff had been able to continue working with Woolworth’s nearby supermarkets
Others had alternately “decided to make a change and move on to new opportunities
“We look forward to continuing to serve many locals at our Te Atatū South and other nearby stores
Foodstuffs North Island earlier announced it had bought the Te Atatū Rd site and promised to refurbish and modernise the existing buildings ahead of opening a New World in over a year’s time
However, when the Woolworths closure date was announced last month, many shoppers told the Herald they were concerned
Shoppers will have to travel about 3km-5km to get to the nearest large supermarkets in Te Atatū South or Lincoln Rd
I wouldn’t have a clue [where else to go],” one disgruntled shopper said last month
that’s a whole year without a supermarket.”
so I’m having to stay close,” another shopper said
And people had mixed feelings about a New World replacing the store
“We’re just going to have to wait because they’ll give us a new one
we’ve had this one for years,” one woman said
Waitākere councillor Shane Henderson said: “People want to get to the supermarket as conveniently as possible” so there was concern among residents that “things will be a bit tougher” in the meantime
“People will have to pop over the bridge probably more often than they usually would,” Henderson said
“I think people by and large will probably have to go all-in on click and collect and things like that
There’s different ways around things in the modern world these days.”
The nearest supermarket to the peninsula is over 2.9km away from the Te Atatū Rd site at the corner of Te Atatū and Edmonton Rds in Te Atatū South
That Woolworths serves residents in its own suburb and Glendene and Kelston
Another supermarket serving the suburbs is more than 3.2km away at Kelston Mall
which itself is less than 2km from Woolworths Lynnmall
the nearest supermarkets are the Woolworths and Pak’nSave in Henderson and Pak’nSave on Lincoln Rd
Census 2023 found the population of Te Atatū Peninsula was 14,454
The only high-reach ladder truck in Auckland broke down last night
Foodstuffs North Island has purchased land and buildings on Te Atatu Road on Te Atatu Peninsula to build a full-service 3000sqm New World store
The site is currently leased by Woolworths
Foodstuffs North Island intends to open its store in the winter of next year
“It’s a huge undertaking but our team is well-prepared and excited to deliver a modern
full-service supermarket that will provide a quantum leap in grocery retail – offering more choice
and a vastly enhanced shopping experience for Te Atatu residents,” said Lindsay Rowles
Foodstuffs North Island GM of retail and property
“The existing building is 25 years old and requires significant work
It’s going to result in a virtually brand-new store for the community.”
He said Foodstuffs has been wanting to bring more competition to the people of West Auckland for a long time
the only locally owned supermarket option is Pak’nSave Lincoln Road
with the nearest New World stores in Hobsonville and New Lynn
Earlier this year, Foodstuffs opened a Pak’nSave in Highland Park, East Auckland

Woolworths has lost a bid to retain its Te Atatu Peninsula site
More than 50 staff from Woolworths Te Atatū are facing uncertain futures after the supermarket revealed it was closing
Woolworths New Zealand director of stores Jason Stockill said the supermarket’s last day of trading would be April 24
our new landlord has not renewed our lease which ends in June 2025
and we need to close Woolworths Te Atatū before then,” Stockill said
The supermarket on the Te Atatū Peninsula caters to a population of about 20,000
It was one of the remaining stores with Countdown branding in New Zealand
“We have valued being a part of this special community
and are working closely with our team to ensure they can continue their careers with Woolworths
we’ll continue to serve locals at Woolworths Te Atatū South and other nearby stores.”
A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed discussions were ongoing with the 58 staff at the supermarket
with nothing currently confirmed for their futures
who represents 55 employees at Woolworths Te Atatū
said staff had known of the closure since mid-last year
“It has been months in advance that people have known that the business was going to be sold
The members of the store knew it was happening
and their stated aim was to redeploy these people in other jobs,” Hughes said
Hughes said while redundancy was on the cards for some
Woolworths was also looking to place workers in other stores
The nearest Woolworths locations to the Te Atatū supermarket included Woolworths Te Atatū South
The Te Atatū closure comes as the business' Westgate supermarket has also been sold
The supermarket on Maki St in Westgate was sold by Colliers for $20.2 million
Director of capital markets for Colliers Blair Peterken said: “This transaction is another example of the strong demand we are experiencing from investors for Large Format Retail (LFR) and Neighbourhood Retail Centres”
A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed the sale would have no impact on the store’s operation or customers
Alongside the Te Atatū closure, it was revealed yesterday that Woolworths has proposed a major restructure of its New Zealand store operating model
leaving workers worried their hours and pay could be cut
The proposal could potentially see some supervisors move on to the shop floor stocking shelves and helping customers find products
A Woolworths spokesperson said the changes were still proposals
but the business' operating model had not been updated in nearly 20 years
“Our customers are looking to us to improve their shopping experience
and we believe that our proposed model would put the right expertise in the right place at the right time to do exactly that,” the spokesperson said
“It would mean more team on the store floor helping customers
ensuring the products they need are on the shelves
and improving our overall service and experience when they shop with us.”
claimed that under the proposal some managers could lose their positions
with their roles combined depending on the store size
Workers could have their positions essentially “downgraded” to a filler
with their hours capped at a maximum of 20 per week
who has been with Woolworths for nine years
works as a supervisor for 45 hours a week earning $28 an hour
their role could be cut to 20 hours a week with their hourly wage cut to $26 an hour
“They’re talking about voluntary redundancies and I’m more than likely going to have to take that.”
Woolworths said the proposal was still under review
with staff feedback being sought until March 24

A man has been arrested after allegedly kidnapping a male victim from his West Auckland home
forcing him into a car then fleeing the scene following an altercation in the getaway vehicle
Police this afternoon arrested a 26-year-old man in relation to the incident and have not ruled out further arrests
Waitematā West CIB area investigations manager
said the kidnapping allegedly occurred at a property on Te Atatū Rd before 2pm on Monday
“The victim was home alone at the time and confronted a male offender he found inside the property
which resulted in the offender allegedly forcing the victim into a vehicle that was parked at the address,” Goldie said
a short drive from where the alleged kidnapping occurred
the victim moved forward in the vehicle and got into an altercation with the offender
where the offender exited and fled in an associate’s vehicle
A member of the public witnessed the incident and immediately contacted police just after 3pm,” Goldie said
The victim was taken to Waitākere Hospital and was assessed to have superficial injuries
“It is incredibly lucky that he did not suffer any further injuries.”
A 26-year-old man was arrested this afternoon and is due to appear in the Waitākere District Court tomorrow charged with kidnapping and aggravated robbery
“Inquiries remain ongoing and further arrests cannot be ruled out,” Goldie said
A scene examination remains ongoing at the Te Atatū Rd property
along with forensic examinations into two vehicles recovered by police
The Herald understands a police scene guard was stationed at the address last night
and police photographers could be seen at the scene throughout the day
Three officers and a forensic photographer were in coveralls
with two officers sitting in their vehicle
A Waitematā CIB trailer was also parked in the driveway
Goldie said police were continuing to offer further support to the victim following the incident
“Police are limited in further comment given the matter is now before the Court
“We are conscious this incident will be concerning to many in the community
and they will see an increased police presence in the area in the coming days.”

A person has died following a crash on Auckland's south-western motorway this morning
The single vehicle crash was reported to police shortly before 5am
the sole occupant of this vehicle died at the scene," a police spokesperson said
"Earlier closures of northbound lanes have now lifted
and police advise motorists to continue to expect delays as earlier backlogs clear
"We appreciate motorists' understanding this morning while emergency services carried out their work."
Police said the serious crash unit examined the scene this morning
and an investigation was underway into this morning's crash on behalf of the Coroner
This is in addition to an earlier crash on Auckland's northern motorway near the Auckland Harbour Bridge
Emergency services responded to a two-truck collision on the northern motorway
near the Auckland Harbour Bridge shortly after 5am
New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said all lanes south on State Highway 1 were open again following this earlier crash
with five lanes available on the Harbour Bridge
"Allow extra time for delays on the Northern Motorway to slowly ease this morning three lanes going south were now open again between Onewa Rd and the Harbour Bridge," NZTA said
A string of fires linked to highly combustible lithium-ion batteries has been deemed a "wake-up call" for waste businesses by Auckland officials
with the public facing exposure to toxic smoke from repeat blazes
Auckland Council is urging "industry vigilance" around the problem after a scrap metal company was fined $30,000 over a 2023 fire that released toxic smoke near Ōtāhuhu
A fire at a recycling plant near Glenfield last month was also initially linked to lithium batteries
although investigators were continuing to probe the blaze
Auckland Council compliance field operations manager David Pawson emphasised "the importance of remaining vigilant despite the novelty of the issue"
Authorities urged the public to avoid putting lithium batteries in the rubbish or recycling
The batteries were inside most portable electronic devices
Pawson said in a statement: "We recognise this is a new issue and we’re all finding our way with lithium-ion batteries and those handling them
"But businesses still need to take responsibility for their disposal — this is their business
Emergency alerts were issued to tens of thousands on Auckland's North Shore last month after the largest fire "for a few years" broke out at an Abilities Group recycling plant
Residents were urged to close windows to avoid fumes
and some beaches were closed due to chemicals released into waterways
Takapuna fire station officer Steven Callagher said there were reports that flames broke out in the area of the facility where batteries were recycled
and an official cause had not been determined
Other recent battery-linked fires have broken out in rubbish trucks in Auckland
caused by the ignition of a lithium-ion battery within a large scrap metal stockpile
highlighted a "growing national and international issue surrounding battery disposal and fire risk," according to Auckland Council
recognised the unique challenges posed by lithium-ion batteries
He noted: "There has been considerable difficulty in finding a technical solution to the problems with batteries catching on fire
"This is not only a national problem but an international one; these orders form a workaround solution until more technical solutions
The judge described the situation as “a new and emerging issue"
While acknowledging Sims Metal’s cooperation and the absence of intentional wrongdoing
reduced from an initial starting point of $50,000
The enforcement orders issued require Sims Metal to implement several improvements at the James Fletcher Drive site in Favona
"The orders are registered with the Environment Court and will remain in place unless superseded by conditions with a new resource consent," the council said
Pawson said the council viewed the 2023 case as an "important precedent in balancing empathy for emerging challenges with the necessity of regulatory compliance
"It also highlights the importance of proactive risk management and industry-wide collaboration to adapt to evolving environmental risks."
A Sims Metal spokesperson said: "Following the May 2023 fire at our Favona facility
we have implemented more stringent control measures to support the ongoing management of potentially concealed materials like lithium-ion batteries
"We are grateful to the communities and businesses in and around Ōtāhuhu
We want to reiterate our appreciation to FENZ and all those
who acted diligently to extinguish the May 2023 fire safely and continue to refine and improve our processes."

The next top cop of the troubled Victoria police force embraces his "outsider" status to curb its leadership malaise and has a stern warning for crooks
Former New Zealand Police commissioner Mike Bush won the race to become Victoria's chief commissioner after months of top-level staffing woes
The 40-year police veteran steps into the role on June 27 with a five-year contract
The Kiwi conceded the job will be no picnic
with Victoria's crime rate hitting an almost decade-high in 2024
everyone knows that," he told reporters today
"These crime issues are actually global
they are quite similar wherever you go but it's not good enough just to turn up after the act
Rising youth crime and high-profile cases of alleged offenders committing crimes while on bail spurred the Victorian government to strengthen laws in March
Bush said he was familiar with the crackdown but bail laws were just one part of the solution to tackling youth crime
along with a "prevention mindset"
He retired from the NZ police force in 2020 after joining in 1978 and spending his final six years in the top job
Whakaari/White Island volcano eruption and Covid-19 pandemic were among the biggest crises Bush confronted during his tenure
Bush also made headlines in 2022 after it emerged he had a past drink-driving conviction when unsuccessfully applying to become head of the UK's Metropolitan Police
Former New Zealand police minister Stuart Nash describedr Bush as hard but fair
He said Bush regularly met with police forces across the Tasman in his previous role and recalled travelling with him to every district across New Zealand once a year to chew the fat with communities
and then we all had biscuits and a cup of tea," Nash told AAP
"Mike is someone who had deep credibility in policing."
The state government has not handed the reins of Victoria Police to an outsider since former NSW Police assistant commissioner Christine Nixon in 2001
The Kiwi was happy to wear the "outsider" tag and is already hatching plans to hit the ground running
"I've got a lot to do to come up to speed," Bush said
"Culture is a consequence of leadership."
establishing relationships with community groups amid rising tensions and increasing police visibility on the beat were among his other top initial priorities
Victoria Police was thrust into leadership turmoil in February
with a no-confidence vote from officers costing chief commissioner Shane Patton his job
Emergency Management Commissioner Rick Nugent became acting chief and expressed an interest in making the move permanent before throwing in the towel in April
Deputy Commissioner Robert Hill will serve in an acting capacity until Bush takes over
Bush intends to speak with Patton before starting and said he wouldn't shy away from pushing back if he disagreed with the government
Premier Jacinta Allan said a recruitment agency was hired and instructed to find a leader capable of addressing the "challenges" plaguing the force
"Mike Bush is the best person for the job," she said
whose union led the no-confidence vote against Patton following a bitter pay dispute
admitted there was a disconnect between members and leaders
The state police union secretary welcomed Mr Bush's appointment and pledge to listen to the mounting workforce concerns
"We have a police force that is currently under-resourced that needs fresh officers," he said
The Commerce Commission has filed criminal charges against Woolworths NZ for alleged inaccurate pricing and misleading specials that may have breached the Fair Trading Act
The commission filed the charges against Woolworths in the Auckland District Court
It indicated in December last year that it would be filing separate criminal charges against Woolworths and two Pak'nSave supermarkets
the commission said there were ongoing issues with pricing in the supermarket sector and the operators may have breached the Fair Trading Act
deputy chair Anne Callinan said operators should know what the expectations were
"Supermarkets have long been on notice about the importance of accurate and clear pricing and specials
and we're not satisfied with the continuing issues we're seeing across the industry
"Pricing accuracy is a consumer right and an expectation of a competitive market
well-resourced businesses that should invest the time and effort to get pricing and promotions right."
She said the charges were filed to remind all supermarkets that they are expected to fix the pricing accuracy issues and implement better processes
In a statement when the charges were announced Woolworths managing director Spencer Sonn said it was important customers could trust prices advertised at their supermarkets
Woolworths said it has cooperated with the Commerce Commission's pricing investigation for some time

Former prime minister Sir John Key says he remains optimistic about Donald Trump's domestic economic policy despite opposing the tariff strategy that has sent global markets into turmoil in recent months
who served as prime minister for eight years
was the keynote speaker at an Auckland business summit earlier today
Sir John told 1News he believed Trump would ultimately take a more moderate approach to tariffs than initially proposed
"I'm not a fan of tariff policies
I don't think they really work," he said
as I think the stock market is telling you at the moment
that actually there will be a more sensible landing place for the tariffs that he's wanting to impose."
Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy
"They're just a negotiating point
I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point
"What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction
You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked
The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part
'I'm going to negotiate case by case'."
Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US
but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy
Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy
he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States
It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs."
Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries
Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing"
particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented
"I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said
noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies
who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks
said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions"
"I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view
but I don't think we should panic either
and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said
"There are growing markets around the world
It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view
We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us."
Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris
he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs
middle-income consumers or consumers in America do
because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country
He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs
and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that
and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade."
Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis
Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her
All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state
thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February
Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg
which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state
Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband
safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said
Hanson was assigned the case in late February and
he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region
They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account
obituaries and marriage licenses from that region
they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg
including date of birth and social security number
Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address
"I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say
‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me
I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.”
Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share
saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found
“I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had
having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said
Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of
And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting
he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to
so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything
any phone numbers of family members back here," he said
"Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.”
Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe
That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town
While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane
for the other it has caused problems for 36 years
It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door
Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail
to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard
a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp
remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening
She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane
whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name
Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him
“You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.”
Another Shane William Pritchard had been born in Otago
They were separated by just two weeks and about 50 miles – one growing up in Mosgiel
the other in Milton – but also by the lives they’d been leading
To watch the full video story go to TVNZ+
Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school
He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes
I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go
Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police
he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence
one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.”
he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his
He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on
“I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash
Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined
and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money
Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment
so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action
'Anything I could get away with
Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem
But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use
Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase
Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences
Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process
the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane
The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media
He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended
He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously
Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s
the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again
This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes
But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice
he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines
He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays
It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health
not realising the constant stress it placed on his life
John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living
worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.”
he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point
He described going for days at a time unable to eat or sleep wondering what might happen next
"Am I going to be in a position where they've got me in handcuffs or I've got debt collectors coming to the door?" ...You're spiralling into this black hole." He started taking anti-anxiety medication which helped
And events regarding Milton Shane seemed to settle
Milton Shane was charged for fishing without a licence in Twizel and failing to comply with fisheries officers
But a court registrar incorrectly entered the birth date of Mosgiel Shane in the system
both Shanes were being chased to pay the $1530 fine
It was Mosgiel Shane who spotted the error and rang the court
He also sent a statement from his manager saying he’d not been fishing in Twizel that day
The reply he got was to say he’d been given the wrong form and that they wouldn’t accept his proof
They just wanted to know how I was going to pay the fine.”
The first Milton Shane knew about this was when Fair Go told him Mosgiel Shane had been chased for the fine
He was told to pay up or face the consequences
feeling he shouldn’t have to pay good money to correct someone else’s mistake
But it cost Mosgiel Shane over $5000 in legal fees
and took months of back and forth between him
“Why should anybody have to pay their own money to right somebody else's wrongs and prove who they are
I’m sick and tired of proving who I am all the time.”
He wanted the Ministry of Justice to take responsibility and reimburse him for his legal costs
saying court staff such as the registrar in this case have immunity if they make mistakes such as the one made here
and if I make a mistake and it's affecting my client
that it's going to cost them money to rectify a mistake that I've made.”
he deserves a million apologies from those guys,” she says
Milton Shane told Fair Go he still gets in trouble
but wants the other Shane to know he doesn’t use his birth date anymore
And he had a message for him: “We’ve got to get it sorted for you
so you can have a good life with you and your family because I’m trying to get my life together with my son and my grandson”
He offers to meet to see if they can sort it out together
but I’m not interested in meeting him,.” says Mosgiel Shane
He says he doesn’t hold any grudges and accepts Milton Shane’s apology
And he believes the only way for that to happen is for the courts and the Ministry of Justice to give him a guarantee that mix-ups won’t occur in the future
Fair Go asked the Ministry of Justice to appear in person to apologise and provide reassurance to Shane of its plans to guard against these mistakes
The Ministry declined our request to be on camera saying any comment on an individual case would compromise the independence of the courts as the Ministry operates separately
But it did send a written apology directly to Mosgiel Shane
It also admitted mistakes can occur in clerical records
but said instructions were clear and the importance of getting things right had been emphasised to staff
Mosgiel Shane isn’t totally convinced that’s the end of it
“All I want is for the Ministry of Justice and the courts to do their job
I'd like to live without this hanging over me all the time
his criminal check has come back showing a clean slate
The government is making it harder to make a claim for pay equity that will cut costs
There have been massive pay equity claims in recent years for nurses and resthome workers
Workplace Minister Brooke van Velden announced the moves to raise the threshold for proving work has been historically undervalued to support a claim
on Tuesday saying changes back in 2020 had created problems
"Claims have been able to progress without strong evidence of undervaluation and there have been very broad claims where it is difficult to tell whether differences in pay are due to sex-based discrimination or other factors."
Claims were concentrated in the public sector
with costs to the Crown of all settlements so far totalling $1.78 billion a year
"The changes I am proposing will significantly reduce costs to the Crown," she said
"The changes will discontinue current pay equity claims."
Van Velden told Midday Report she believes in pay equity but the current thresholds were "a bit too loose"
Asked how she ensure women were not hurt by this
the minister said "I'm a woman and I support women who work"
"I also support removing gender based discriminations from our workforces but what I don't support are muddied laws and unclear laws," she said
"So these changes are better for all women who are working where we can genuinely say hand on heart that what they are finding with their claims is genuine gender based discrimination."
Van Velden told reporters at Parliament any current claims would be stopped and need to restart under the new threshold
to show "genuine" gender discrimination and make sure the comparators were right
She gave a figure of 33 current claims that would be stopped
as the legislation was put through under urgency
"You have librarians who've been comparing themselves to transport engineers
We have admin and clerical staff at Health New Zealand comparing themselves to mechanical engineers."
Social workers had compared themselves to air traffic controllers
"We don't believe we have that setting right."
Any comparison would now be between female employees and male employees at the same employer
"But you cannot go fishing for discrimination across the New Zealand workforce."
All current settled claims would continue but the government was drawing "a line in the sand"
"We're not stopping claims."
The nurse's union has this year had at least 10 pay equity claims in play
The PSA union has said pay equity claims and settlements had resulted in significant improvements in pay and working conditions for many workers
The union said the changes would make it "impossible for people in female-dominated professions to be paid fairly"
"Women across the country will pay the price for this," PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons said
"The government's changes today are a dark day for New Zealand women as the government says it will repeal the pay equity law and extinguish 33 existing claims in a constitutional overreach
"The PSA is exploring all possible avenues to oppose these unconstitutional amendments and stop this attack on women
We will not be deterred in our fight to achieve pay equity for all."
"This is a blatant and shameful attack on women," New Zealand Nurses organisation chief executive Paul Goulter said
"Women in workforces predominantly performed by female employees have been underpaid and undervalued for generations
That is what pay equity claims seek to rectify," he said
"This move by the government will widen the pay gap between men and women."
The union had at least 10 pay current pay claims across Aged Care
These cover many nurses and support workers
The E tū union also called the changes an attack on women and a green light to pay them less for work of equal value
The government was pulling the rug out from under a 13-year-long fight in aged care
"These changes are not about evidence — they are about saving money by keeping women underpaid," national secretary Rachel Mackintosh said in a statement
A number of unions have called a snap rally at Parliament at 1pm today in light of the announcement
the Council of Trade Unions and representatives of other unions say they will be "protesting the government's attack on women and the destruction of progress on pay equity..."

Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said
I love you” in Portuguese rose from the crowd behind him
whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor
which also displayed what appears to be the album cover art — an X-ray of a pelvis
"100% written in blood," the website read
The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth
She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room
She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft
Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured
adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children
According to her testimony and that of the concierge
at least one of the suspects had a handgun
The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery
estimated to be worth more than US$6 million (NZ$10 million)
Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered
Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime
is one of two suspected robbers who allegedly entered the apartment
his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian
who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station

said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian
but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime
Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision
he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian
is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat
although he was filmed by CCTV cameras and numerous telephone contacts with the other co-defendants show his involvement
The other defendants are suspected of providing information about Kardashian’s presence in the apartment
Others are accused of playing a role in the resale of the jewellery in Antwerp

Violence erupted at a library drag event when members of Brian Tamaki’s Destiny Church groups stormed a community centre to protest a children’s show
It has drawn the ire of Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick and Auckland Council
who both condemned the acts as “sad” and “disappointing”
and forced the cancellation of a second show at another community centre
involving the church’s Man Up and Legacy groups and youngsters
happened at Te Atatū Community Centre and saw them punching
Event organiser Auckland Pride billed the event as a “musical
magical adventure exploring the science of the skies” and was open to all ages
young children and adults had to be barricaded inside
said those targeted were “incredibly shaken up
and I think that’s the intention of this intimidation and violence”
protesting a drag show event with a focus on science
were denied entry before bowling past staff trying to stop them
Tamaki posted on social media: “Proud of my people who are out in the community today
making a stand against the woke agenda plaguing our city
“Our West Auckland team are outside the council library in Te Atatū today protesting yet another drag king who is attempting to seduce more kids into their queer lifestyle through their storytime events.”
Tamaki later told the Herald that Man Up was forced to step up and take peaceful action with the Government refusing to “address the excessive spending on borderline pornography and perversion targeting our innocent Kiwi kids”
passionate parents and youth gathered to protest ..
an R18+ adult entertainer who is being paid by ratepayers to perform for children

Footage on social media showed Man Up and Legacy members at the back of the crowd pushing
One woman can be seen punching another in the head several times
as others in the crowd appear to fall to the ground amid screaming and yelling
Others pulled at clothing while some tried to hold violent protesters back
Police said they responded to a report of disorder at an event at a public building about 12.30pm
A spokesman said officers dispersed “the group responsible for the disorder”
The second show was due to take place at the New Lynn Community Centre hours later but was cancelled by Auckland Council due to protesters’ plans to target it
The council’s community director Rachel Kelleher told the Herald: “The council is extremely disappointed in the non-peaceful actions of protesters [at the] rainbow-friendly educational event
“Our libraries and community spaces are provided as safe and inclusive places for the whole community
and any actions that intimidate and threaten our community and staff will not be tolerated
“The council respects the right for peaceful protest
and the protesters did not respect the staff or other users of the centre.”

Destiny Church groups Man Up and Legacy Sisterhood protest against a children's library drag event at Te Atatū Community Centre
A 16-year-old girl attending a sports event suffered concussion after being assaulted during a violent melee when Destiny Church followers stormed a Pride event at an Auckland library
Violence broke out at a library drag event on Saturday when Brian Tamaki’s Destiny Church members swarmed at the Te Atatū Community Centre to protest a children’s show
Police confirmed tonight they are investigating allegations of assault after about 50 people entered the building and refused to leave
involving Destiny Church’s Man Up and Legacy groups as well as youngsters
Sarah* told the Herald her daughters Brooklyn*
were attending a dodgeball tournament in the venue’s gymnasium when protesters blocked both entrances and interrupted the games with loudspeakers
“They said [the demonstration] was to keep the kids safe
but they brought their kids there and their children were unsupervised and roaming wild.”
She said the protesters then started marching upstairs towards the library
despite being told they could not go up to a privately booked space
joined efforts by librarians and pride workers to stop the demonstrators from reaching the library
A deleted livestream posted by Brian Tamaki’s Freedoms and Rights Coalition West Auckland shows the protesters attempting to force their way up the stairs
and another in a black cap - throwing punches towards Brooklyn and Christina
the woman in white can be heard telling Brooklyn
Sarah claimed the woman in white held Brooklyn down so the attacker’s daughter in the black cap could assault Christina
The Destiny Church demonstrators then formed a haka
in what Sarah described as an effort to “cover up their assaults” on the staff and dodgeball players
She said the woman in white denied committing any violence following the attack
while Brooklyn was left with bruises to her ribs and arms
“[My children] did not know this level of hatred and bigotry existed today,” Sarah said
In a sermon on Sunday morning, Tamaki told his congregation he gave members the green light to storm the library
Tamaki said he instructed the church elder: “I want you to storm the library they’re in and shut it down.”
“There might have been some pushing and shoving
but I would smack someone who was trying to pervert my child in a room.”
Tamaki told the Herald that Man Up was forced to step up and take peaceful action with the Government refusing to “address the excessive spending on borderline pornography and perversion targeting our innocent Kiwi kids”
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said it was important to respect people’s right to free speech and peaceful protest
He told media that Aotearoa is a great country that celebrates diversity
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown said Destiny Church’s actions were “totally unacceptable”
“While I respect freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest
to enter a council library facility that is there for all our communities to use and intimidate council staff
volunteers and community members going about their business is completely out of line,” Brown said
Acting Waitematā District Commander Inspector Simon Walker told the Herald police “strongly condemned” the group’s actions and said the protest “crossed a line”
Auckland Council chief executive Phil Wilson said the protest was “outrageous and unacceptable”
He described visiting the Te Atatū centre twice on Saturday
first seeing Destiny Church protesting outside the community centre
and then witnessing “50 or 60″ protesters forcibly entering the building
the same groups broke through police barricades at the Auckland Rainbow Parade and held up the festivities with a haka
smiling and waving an at unimpressed crowd
A witness described a heightened police presence at Sunday’s Big Gay Out in Pt Chevalier
with up to 20 police cars reported at the event
Tamaki instructed his followers to rest on Sunday instead of protesting the festival at Coyle Park
Police said no arrests have been made relating to Saturday’s events
but a criminal investigation into the alleged assaults was now in the early stages

Tutai responded to the accusation by stabbing her repeatedly with a knife he had retrieved from the kitchen in the Te Atatū Peninsula home where they were both staying with her family. The 27-year-old died that same day as paramedics rushed her to the hospital
have been disclosed for the first time following the 30-year-old defendant’s guilty plea to murder yesterday
Tutai had been set to go to trial next month in the High Court at Auckland
Justice Mathew Downs instead remanded him back in custody to await sentencing in November
Hai’s extended family quietly filled the courtroom gallery as the brief hearing took place
Emergency responders rushed to the West Auckland home around 7.15am last September 11 to find the mother in critical condition
“I already know what I did was wrong,” he told police at the scene
Tutai later admitted while in custody to having been the one who stabbed his ex but declined to make a formal statement
according to the agreed summary of facts for the case
The two had first started dating in 2012 but were separated and sleeping in different bedrooms at the time of the stabbing
“Towards the end of the [birthday] evening
there were indications of conflict between the pair based on mistrust of Ms Hai by Mr Tutai,” court documents state
Hai asked about the missing Nintendo console
which triggered “a short verbal argument” followed by the knife attack
A pathologist would later count seven deep stab wounds
including ones to her neck and chest that would have been fatal and a wound to her arm described as “potentially fatal”
She also suffered a deep stab wound to her back and four shallower wounds
Two children and the victim’s mother were also at the home as the stab wounds were inflicted
she observed Mr Tutai remove the knife from her body,” court documents state
“She (mother) then tried to drag her daughter away in an attempt to help her
“At this point Mr Tutai has phoned the Police Communication Centre advising the call taker that he had stabbed his ex-partner and that she was dying.”
they told Tutai multiple times to drop the knife and come out peacefully
“Police had to use force to detain and arrest him,” authorities said
Hai, known by the nickname Naz, devoted her life to her son and had recently obtained her real estate licence in a step towards building a bright future with him, friends and family previously told the Herald
“Naz had a bright future ahead of her,” sister Shazia Peri said
The Epsom Girls’ Grammar alumnus loved netball
cooking and visiting family in the Far North
always wanted to make everyone happy – just an all-round beautiful soul in and out,” her sister said

Three people have been badly injured in a crash in West Auckland
Emergency services rushed to Te Atatū Rd at about 4.30pm after being alerted to the incident
Police initially told NZME three people had been seriously injured in the incident
The worst of the injured is now in critical condition in hospital
The Herald understands at least one of the trio was a pedestrian
A section of Te Atatū Rd was closed as emergency crews responded
The police serious crash unit is at the site
In West Auckland, Te Atatū Road has seen a 20% increase in morning traffic volumes this past year. To address this, Auckland Transport (AT) introduced T2 lanes earlier this year, designed to expedite journeys for buses and carpoolers. This change has reduced bus travel times by nearly 48%, making a notable difference for commuters on all modes of transport.
Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Chris Carter commends AT’s proactive approach, saying, “it is fantastic to see that the Te Atatū T2 lane and improved bus services are well exceeding expected targets and are helping Westies to get around more efficiently.”
Henderson Massey Local Board transport leads Brooke Loader and Dan Collins also support these changes, noting that
This is part of a wider programme of new technology and improvements Auckland Transport, and the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi are implementing to help our existing roads keep up with the tens of thousands of extra vehicles being added to the roads each year.

Born and raised in Mount Maunganui, the Winters are founders of footwear brand La Tribe and Summer Supply, importers and distributors of global lifestyle brands like Havaianas.
They have transformed their classic 1970s coastal residence into a calming and convivial family sanctuary overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, where they live with their three kids – Nala, 7, Kalani, 4, and Kye, 3. Before purchasing 56 Covil Avenue in 2020, the family were already living in Te Atatu and love the neighbourhood and its community vibe.
“I’m a surfer and love the water. The boat club is so close and we’re also well connected to our work and life here,” says Dane.
A move to their new home was meant to be. “We were living on the same river and every morning we’d raise the blinds in our room and could see the tip of Covil Ave – it was the first thing we looked at when we looked north,” he says.
Despite being nine months pregnant and initially resistant to a major renovation, Emma relished the opportunity to transform and reinvigorate the classic brick and cedar home in 2021.
“I enjoy the creative process so for me it was a dream project. I was at that stage in life where could team up with a girlfriend I trusted [Toni Brandso from Material Creative] and we could really put our feel to the house,” she says.
Although life is hectic, “we thrive off chaos” laughs Emma, their space is not.
“We have so many things we juggle, so we wanted to make it peaceful and relaxing – like a sanctuary. For me it was about finding colours and tones that make you feel like that, I’m into making the energy of the house feel good. We went for creamy, earthy tones – a kind of monastery vibe. We used Marmorino lime wash plaster on the walls for texture and lots of wood and stone finishes for that grounded feeling.”
The open-plan kitchen, living and dining spaces flows out to the expansive north-facing decks, swimming pool and spa.
The very private, 1232sqm property is tucked at the end of the cul de sac and backs onto Covil Park.
Functionality was also at the forefront of the design, a must for busy families of five, so surfaces had to be robust and clutter needed to be easily minimised.
“Everything is easy to clean and there’s lots of storage. We’ve got a massive shoe cupboard – we are shoe people,” she says.
Although the home already had great bones, a reworking of the two level floorplan has made it much more conducive to family life and entertaining. It now offers four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, two living rooms, a third living/large office/rumpus/studio with separate access, and double internal garaging.
The open-plan kitchen, living and dining space flows out to the expansive north-facing decks, swimming pool and spa.
“It’s such a relaxing place to be. You feel out of the city in the city – almost a beach vibe. The kids spend hours out there in the pool getting that Vitamin D,” says Dane.
“We’ve got a gate out onto the reserve, so I’m always out there with the kite and balls – it’s like an extension of your backyard,” he adds.
The Winters’ home has been a much-loved place for people to gather and connect during their time there.
The Winters have transformed their classic 1970s coastal residence into a calming and convivial family sanctuary overlooking the Waitemata Harbour.
The dining area is flooded with natural light and looks out to the garden and swimming pool.
“We have family all over the world that are bouncing back to Auckland and our house is the marae sometimes – we’ve often got people coming and going,” says Dane.
Emma adds: “It’s always been that kind of house, once upon a time they used it for Westside and a couple of episodes of Outrageous Fortune. We definitely brought it out of the ‘70s but its character was there from the start.”
Hayley Kirk-Smith, from Bayleys, is marketing the property with colleague Roberta Stewart and says that summer holidays never have to end with the luxurious “resort at home” living on offer here.
“Buyers will love the fabulous pool and garden, which are bathed in all-day sun with glistening harbour views, and interior design that seamlessly blends tranquil beauty with family functionality, all just moments from the CBD. The ultimate lifestyle retreat.”
56 Covil Avenue in Te Atatu South, Waitakere, is for sale by auction on February 4. The four-bedroom, two-bathroom property has a 2021 RV of $2.475 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2021 for $1.99m.

Pawanjit Singh Ghatora had to have his leg amputated after it was crushed by a car that struck him while he was walking on a footpath in Te Atatū
An Auckland man had nowhere to go as a car veered on to a footpath
pinning him against a power pole and crushing his leg
Pawanjit Singh Ghatora is still recovering in North Shore Hospital from the horrific accident on a residential street in Te Atatū earlier this month
He is facing life without a leg after it was so severely damaged it had to be amputated
Ghatora was walking with his elderly father on the footpath outside his Te Atatū home on February 1 when an out-of-control vehicle veered off the road towards him
“I saw that a very high-speeding car crashed into a car in front of me..
And it suddenly turned towards me and I [didn’t have] the time to respond.”
Ghatora told the Herald his right leg was pinned between a concrete street pole and the car and was “totally crushed”
An off-duty police officer neighbour hastily created a tourniquet around his thigh using a belt
including an off-duty Hato Hone St John medic
rushed out of their homes to tend to Ghatora
Ambulances arrived several minutes later and rushed him to Auckland City Hospital
Ghatora remained conscious throughout most of the aftermath and immediately knew his leg was severely injured
That was the only thought that was running through my mind.”
The resulting injuries left him in critical condition and forced Ghatora
to have his right leg amputated above the knee
His leg was initially amputated below the knee
He also required surgery on his remaining foot
and cannot use it for the next eight to 10 weeks
His father remained traumatised from witnessing the accident
It’s quite a tough time for everyone in our family.”
who described life as “picture perfect” before the accident
He hopes to use a prosthetic leg to learn how to walk and eventually run once more
A Givealittle page to cover medical and living costs was started by his close friend and former boss Chris Bradley and has raised more than $30,000
Bradley looked after Ghatora when he was separated from the rest of his family for two years during the Covid lockdowns
which was followed by a years-long battle to bring his family to New Zealand from India
He described Ghatora as a “devoted husband
Ghatora told the Herald he was “overwhelmed and full of gratitude” towards the response
“I never expected such a great response coming from people..
Ghatora said he would keep a positive mindset during his long journey to recovery

Brian Tamaki (inset) has supported the actions of Destiny Church members who tried to storm a children's drag science show in Te Atatū
A mother who was with her young children to attend a children’s drag science show said youngsters were crying as the violent group tried to enter the building
She told the Herald adults in the room tried putting on a happy face to comfort the children
while yelling and banging came from outside
The music for the performance was turned up to distract from the ruckus and the performer targeted by the protesters appeared increasingly nervous
“There was a huge amount of people out there and if they had actually come in
it would have been very difficult to keep ourselves safe,” she said
“I would have been terrified for what might have happened and how my children could have been involved or witnessed hostility
“I was focused on my daughter and trying to make sure that she wasn’t getting too upset because she could hear all the shouting outside and the banging on the walls and stuff
So I was just trying to keep her calm and I just told her there were some naughty kids outside.”
happened at Te Atatū Community Centre on Saturday with protesters punching
A 16-year-old girl attending a sports event at the community centre suffered a concussion after being allegedly assaulted during the protest
Police said on Sunday they were investigating allegations of assault after 50 people entered the building and refused to leave
Auckland councillor Richard Hills today shared the terror felt by an 11-year-old inside the library on Saturday
Speaking at a meeting this morning of the council’s Policy and Planning Committee
who described being scared and worrying the protesters would hurt someone
“I started to get really scared when the chanting got louder and we heard it inside
especially when they were banging on the door,” Hills read
“I thought they’d come in and hurt people.”
Hills said council needed to draw a line on not tolerating personal attacks
or behaviour that displaced or threatened the safety of those using council facilities or attending events
it was extremely terrifying and pretty horrible,” RNZ reported
“Members of the rainbow community also are fairly used to abuse
but that type of behaviour was well above anything most have experienced ever before,” Hills said
The mother said she was excited to take her children
as she had a background in science and thought it would be a fun and entertaining event
She also believed it would be good to give her children experiences with diverse people
she was saddened to see the protesters with placards outside the building
“My heart just felt a bit sad that they would be trying to go off about their discrimination
I felt quite bad for anybody around the rainbow community who could see the message that the Man Up movement was saying
“I’m upset that they are making trans people feel unwelcome
she was sitting at the front of the audience and was not immediately aware of what was going on outside the room
“I was naively under the impression that they were just trying to disrupt things and be rude and disrespectful
I wasn’t aware they were trying to actually get in,” she said
She said event organisers and staff at the community centre walked the families back to their cars when it was over
Another witness said she was happy that her daughters were young enough not to understand what had happened
told the Herald the event organisers moved it upstairs to avoid the protesters
There was lots of colour and dancing which any child would love,” she said
there was banging on the wall and lots of people doing a haka
what should I be doing?’ It’s hard to know in the moment what would eventuate.”
The woman said she became upset after seeing videos of how the protesters got up the stairs
“It dawned on me how terrible it could have become,” she said
“I don’t know what would have happened if they got into the room
Half the kids couldn’t defend themselves.”

An Auckland man who had his leg amputated after being pinned against a power pole by a car while walking says he has seen the best of humankind while recovering
Pawanjit Singh Ghatora has undergone five surgeries and has been in hospital since 1 February
after he was hit by a car while walking with his father along a street in Te Atatū
Despite his right leg being amputated above the knee he said he was "thankful" for the care he received from his community and hospital staff
but I'm doing good - the pain comes and goes and I've been transferred to North Shore Hospital from Auckland
so with the help of my family I can go outside and look at the lake
Ghatora said he remained conscious after being hit by the car
despite his right leg being pinned between it and a concrete street pole
"I remember falling down on the ground and looking at the sky
"Everyone came to help me so quickly there was an off-duty police officer and off-duty paramedic nearby and the ambulance was there very fast
Ghatora said he was even enjoying the hospital food
"My wound is healing well and once it's healed
"Since this happened I've experienced that most people are good
Ghatora came to New Zealand from India in 2019
ended up being apart from his family for over two years
he took up running and recently completed a half-marathon
"I'm quite hopeful I can get a prosthetic at some stage and that in the long term I will be able to run again
Ghatora's old boss started a Givealittle to help with medical and living costs for him and his family - so far it had raised over $57,000
my wife has been off work since it happened and we have a mortgage to pay so this will really help us along with paying for future rehabilitation."
Ghatora said he did not want to spend time blaming the driver
I just had to let it go for my own healing
"There's no point grieving for the past or regretting it
it's up to the police to take care of the rest."
A police spokesperson confirmed police were anticipating to lay charges in relation to the crash on Friday
"Once these charges have been laid there will be a court appearance later this month," the spokesperson said
