A beloved cat has been immortalised after a community effort got a small memorial installed on a Dunedin cycle track
the West Harbour Community was shocked and saddened to discover a community "icon"
had died after being hit by a car on State Highway 88
the community grieved for their beloved "Track Cat," which led to the creation of the "Track Cat memorial stone"
West Harbour community board member Jarrod Hodson
said a local stone carver made a memorial to the cat and the community had banded together to get the body cremated
Mr Hodson said the person who hit her immediately got out and started to search for the owner but could not find anyone
"Her owner was the entire Ravensbourne community
The memorial was carved from Oamaru limestone by Ravensbourne carver Megan Sinclair
It had been set in concrete on Sunday in a spot overlooking Otago Harbour
Mr Hodson said it was nice to see someone had already laid a dandelion on the top of the stone
We want people to see her as the special cat she was."
A date for an official unveiling and a commemoration of Track Cat’s life will be announced

both in the Auckland suburb of West Harbour
Photo / Supplied- Two houses in Auckland’s West Harbour are for sale
one a liquidator sale and the other a waterfront “rare gem”
- Rundown property at 1/125 West Harbour Drive had previously been described as a “Miami Vice” style home
- Neighbouring waterfront home at 133 West Harbour Drive was designed by Bossley Architects and has a CV of $2.23 million
Two unusual but very different neighbouring houses in Auckland’s West Harbour are on the market for sale at the same time
which has fallen into disrepair and is considered too dangerous to enter
waterfront “rare gem” entering the market for the first time in a long time
The sales are with different real estate companies and are not connected
The house at 1/125 West Harbour Drive
was described by a previous real estate agency when it was last on the market in 2020 as a “Miami Vice” style home from the late 1990s
The advertising back then was directed towards builders and re-cladders and the property sold for $460,000
as an add-value opportunity being sold by tender closing on December 17
1/125 West Harbour Drive is being sold at the instruction of the liquidator
The listing photo shows 133 West Harbour Drive next door
The Bayleys listing copy said the dwelling was in a poor state of repair – there are no internal photos – but that it offered an excellent opportunity to remove or rebuild to add value in a sought-after and high-growth West Auckland residential suburb
“The property is being sold on a completely ‘as is
where is basis’ with no internal viewings available due to the condition of the dwelling and provides a wide range of options for astute buyers looking for an opportunity to redevelop and add value in this location.”
Viewings were strictly by appointment and outside-only for the property close to the Westgate retail precinct
The property has a CV of $680,000 but when it was last advertised for sale by auction in 2020
the property was headlined “Calling all Builders/Re-cladders”
with interested parties told to disregard the rating value which was then $780,000
The Harcourts listings copy said it was positioned well off the road amidst good company near the upper reaches of Upper Harbour

A ‘Miami Vice’ style home from the late 90s

OneRoof understands a liquidator is selling the property as the company which owned it was now undergoing a liquidation process
said the company was incorporated in 2017 with the director advising them the services provided included the installation of aluminium cladding and asbestos removal
“The director advised the company’s business failed as a result of a number of factors
including the loss of a franchise and prolonged delays for contracted work,” said the report
told OneRoof he only knew the property was being sold as is
and that he expected it would appeal to developers or builders
The five-bedroom home for sale at 133 West Harbour Drive was designed by renowned architecture firm Bossley Architects
The waterfront property offers views of the harbour
Nobody is living there or has lived there for a while and because of the condition of the dwelling inside
we are unable to allow access to the inside of the property.”
In contrast, the neighbouring waterfront house at 133 West Harbour Drive has a CV of $2.23 million
four-bathroom property goes to auction on December 6
described the property in his listing copy as offering a level of beauty and exclusivity that words could not fully capture
The “one-of-a-kind” waterfront home was designed by Bossley Architects
and civic projects that are sensitive to the landscape and context”
“The firm’s designs often emphasize strong connections between indoor and outdoor spaces
The house featured 490sqm of floor space with expansive harbour and city views
The house is filled with bold colour choices
the home is designed for both comfort and sophistication
each crafted to capture the essence of waterfront living
making its first market appearance in a considerable amount of time.”
The house was positioned on the water’s edge
and the property offered a lifestyle and location like no other in West Harbour
“The current owners have thoughtfully provided concept drawings
giving a glimpse of the property’s future potential and value
allowing the new owner to envision further enhancements or expansions.”
The listing described a versatile upstairs space set apart from the main living area as perfect for a private

with high property prices and unique architectural homes
When Prince William and Kate toured Auckland Harbour on a Sealegs boat in 2014
the owners of a Ron Sang-designed waterfront home in West Harbour had prime seats
Those seats happened to be in their own home at 25 Oakpark Place, which is now on the market and going to auction on March 26
The vendors have owned the iconic house for 24 years
and their son told OneRoof the 270-degree views meant there was always something to see
but the view of the royal couple was a highlight
He said his parents were downsizing but the decision to sell was difficult
as the house was something they fell in love with “every day”
The property offers breathtaking sea views
“When you walk through the front door you’ve got the trifecta of the sea
boats and then the Auckland skyline behind
It makes time stop for a moment,” he told OneRoof

A run-down house next door sold recently in a liquidator sale
A five-bedroom home for sale at 133 West Harbour Drive was designed by renowned architecture firm Bossley Architects
A run-down property on West Harbour Drive recently sold at the instruction of the liquidator
It had an RV of $680,000 – only $20,000 of which is improvement
Bradshaw said West Harbour was a popular area
attracting people from the North Shore and East Auckland
people liked the combined city and water view as opposed to just water
because with just water there was no view at night
People were also drawn to the amenities – the new Costco was near and there were plenty of supermarkets
was probably the only suburb in the west whose high prices remained since the housing market took a dive after the post-Covid highs
most of West Auckland was brick and tile homes or new terrace housing but West Harbour had architectural gems
“I don’t think the house type is comparable to anywhere in Auckland because you’ve got places like Mansion Court in West Harbour where all the houses are mansions – they really are all built like mansions
Prices in West Harbour were “almost” creeping up to central Auckland suburb prices
“The difference is you buy into central Auckland for $2m or $3m
that money would buy something architectural

A passionate public presentation kicked off the West Harbour Community Board meeting last week
setting the scene for a contentious meeting at Port Chalmers Town Hall
West Harbour resident Kris Nicolau addressed the board’s public forum
highlighting difficulties providing feedback to Port Otago on noise
and the recent construction of fencing and carparking near the port that was encroaching on a public footpath
She also highlighted concerns about the placement of a bus stop at the site
chairwoman Angela McErlane undertook to discuss the situation with Port Otago chief executive Kevin Winders
Ms Nicolau also complained that there were moves towards more reclamation
establishing a sandy beach and a new marina near Port Chalmers
"They are planning to do this without looking at upgrading what we already have in Careys Bay and Deborah Bay," she said
Another issue of concern was the aftermath of the end of manufacturing at the Ravensdown fertiliser works site in Ravensbourne
and the need to clean up any contamination from the site
West Harbour Community Board member Jarrod Hodson said he had spoken with Ravensdown officials
who had committed to cleaning up the site in stages over three to six months
Mr Hodson planned to closely follow progress on the work
told the board about difficulties he had experienced with Dunedin City Council contractors patching the road outside his property and causing damage to the footpath
"I asked if they could connect it to the stormwater system and was told by an engineer that they would keep me in the loop — I haven’t heard a word since then," Mr Neill said
Senior council officer present at the West Harbour Community Board meeting
customer and regulatory acting general manager Paul Henderson
noted the issues raised by Mr Neill and offered to look into it
The West Harbour Community Board heard a presentation from council Three Waters and transition general manager Dave Ward and Three Waters group manager John McAndrew
with an update on current and future water supply in West Harbour
The pair gave a overview of the current water supply and issues
including that the existing pipeline could barely cover demand
poor water quality from the Cedar Farm and Rossville dams
and the impact of the heavy rain event in October
They also highlighted that construction of a new
larger pipeline from the city water supply had begun
This pipeline would more than double the volume of water able to be supplied to Port Chalmers and West Harbour to about 2000-3000 cubic metres per day
The future of the dams had not yet been decided
other than the council would not need them for water supply purposes
Mr Ward and Mr McAndrew asked the board for feedback on how often the community visited the dams
and what types of activities they did there
the board discussed the proposal to name a private right of way at Long Beach either Settlers Lane or Knowles Lane
After voting to support the title Knowles Lane
the board discussed concerns raised by Cr Mandy Mayhem that
while the developer had proposed the name in reference to early resident Elizabeth (Molly) Knowles
the name did not actually reflect her identity
the board resolved to contribute to consultation around a review of council road naming policy
The board then looked at the governance support officer’s report
a previous funding application from the Purakaunui Amenities Society
and the need to workshop the board’s community plan
the meeting included several tense exchanges between board member Barbara Anderson and others

A major slip at Maia is the most significant issue and number one priority for the city council following the deluge of the past few days, Dunedin's mayor says.
Jules Radich said the slip in Maia on Friday morning had affected a 500m section of the water main serving all West Harbour suburbs.
"The pipe that is affected is well buried under the slip . . . it's quite significant what needs to take place (to fix the pipe), it's problematic actually."
And any fix, temporary or otherwise, cannot be made until it is known if the slip is stable.
A DCC spokesperson said they hoped to have a temporary solution in place on Sunday.
"In regards a timeframe for a permanent solution, that will depend on further assessments.
"However, we hope to have partial reconnection completed tomorrow. This would involve reconnecting to the St Leonard’s reservoir," the spokesperson said.
Residents are thought to have about two days water remaining, based on current usage, so are reminded to conserve water as much as possible.
A boil water notice has been issued for all DCC-supplied properties in West Harbour from District Rd in Roseneath to Lewis St in Deborah Bay.
"This is a precautionary measure as we have switched to a new water supply following damage to the water main in Maia," a council spokesperson said.
The boil water notice will remain in place until water quality testing of the new supply is complete.
The Maia slip was the most significant issue in terms of the city's recovery following the downpour of the past several days, he said.
"It's also blocking the (road to Port Chalmers), which is a busy road."
Contractors are hand digging a trench around the large slip to get water reconnected to West Harbour communities.
"It's just like the old days," said Dunedin City Council three waters capital delivery team leader William Clifford at the site today.
There was not any access for machinery in some parts of the area around the slip, he said.
Residents in the West Harbour area, apart from St Leonards, were receiving water from a local reservoir in the meantime.
The contractors were working to install a temporary pipe-line up the side and around the back of the slip on advice from geotechnical engineers to avoid the slip as much as possible, Mr Clifford said.
West Harbour community board member Jarrod Hodson said he had been to have a look and the slip was "massive".
The community board was working hard to inform the community through its Facebook community pages.
They had been in touch with the three or four families affected by the slip, which was as many as knew there were at Saturday morning.
The house in the path of the slip was very large and he could not see how those people would be getting back into it.
One lane of SH88 around the edge of the harbour had been reopened for residents and emergency vehicle access only.
Water tankers were able to get into the area for drinking and cooking water supplies.
People could also get to and from Dunedin and Port Chalmers via Upper Junction Rd, though the route is not suitable for heavy vehicles.
Homes near the slip were evacuated on Friday morning, and more had been evacuated since.
Most of the 25 people still in a welfare centre set up by the council last night were from the Maia area, he said.
He did know how many properties were evacuated or how many properties were affected by the slip.
A DCC staff member had a lucky escape after they went to investigate reports of damage to the water main.
A DCC spokesperson said the staff member's vehicle got stuck in the mud, so they parked and were picked up by a colleague.
The slip then gave way, sending torrents of mud - and a DCC ute - down the hillside.
The staff member was well clear of the area when the slip struck, the spokesperson said.

Dunedin residents are being warned to take care when handling sandbags as the city begins the recovery process after destructive floods last week
Nine homes were red-stickered after the city was pounded with more than two months' worth of rain in less than two days
Dunedin City Council said sandbags could either be returned to the collection points
or left on the kerb for teams to collect over the week
People should wear gloves while handling them
not tip out the sand and treat as contaminated material
Council teams would also be working to catch up on kerbside rubbish collection during the week

Assault, Auckland Transport, Bus Driver, Community, NZ Police, West Harbour
The process of justice has begun for a bus driver who was reportedly assaulted by a man (reportedly from West Harbour) who was attempting to board his bus
The driver has been identified as a person of Indian origin and members of the public reacting to the incident on social media have been vociferous in seeking justice
The New Zealand Police have confirmed having arrested the man who will appear in the Auckland District Court on September 13
a bus travelling through Avondale stopped on Great North Road to pick up passengers
One of those boarding was attempting to travel free of charge and was challenged by the bus driver
the bus driver was allegedly assaulted and the offender fled on foot
Area Prevention Manager for Auckland City West Police
said that the offender has been apprehended and will be appearing in Court
“One of our frontline units was travelling through the Avondale township on Sunday (September 8)
when they noticed a man matching the description of the offender
The unit quickly turned around to stop the man
he attempted to evade staff by boarding a nearby bus and hiding down the back,” Inspector Kitcher said
He said that the man was arrested without an incident
“We have no tolerance for violence taking place on public transport whatsoever
and we will continue to prosecute those offenders
No one deserves to come to work and be subjected to harm just for doing their job,” Inspector Kitcher said

The Prime Minister will arrive in Dunedin at 9am today and address media about the flood recovery at 12.30pm
On two consecutive days Dunedin received more rain than usually falls on the city in the month of October
Infrastructure was overwhelmed and the ground saturated
damaged Three Waters infrastructure and put people in harm’s way
The Dunedin City Council red-stickered 11 properties after 44 inspections
About 20 roads remained closed in Dunedin as did about a dozen in the Clutha district last night
Boil water notices and conserve water notices were in effect in some areas and officials warned the public to stay out of floodwater contaminated areas
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) this morning advised motorists to expect delays when using SH88 in Dunedin as contractors investigated the extent of the damage
An NZTA spokesman said there would be delays of up to 30min between 9am and 4pm for the next three days on SH88 at the Parry St rockfall site while contractors did scaling works to make the road safe
Investigations to assess damage were under way at the Burkes slip on SH88
The road was currently under traffic light stop/go traffic management
Other geotechnical investigations were continuing at various sites on SH88
Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich yesterday thanked city residents for their calm in the face of the storm
"People have helped themselves and then they’ve helped their friends
relatives - they’ve helped themselves and then they’ve helped others"
first responders and volunteers who have gone above and beyond - in many cases working through the night in terrible weather - to help our community."
Mr Radich said all of the properties that were red-stickered were related to slips and not flooding
He could not offer a timeframe for the city’s recovery
He lifted the state of emergency at 4pm yesterday
The welfare centre at Forsyth Barr Stadium also closed
A massive slip at Maia knocked out about 500m of water main that serves the West Harbour suburbs
Mr Radich called it the biggest single challenge immediately facing the city as it recovered
A council spokesman said staff were now working at speed to install a temporary pipeline
but he could not yet say when it would be ready for use
Civil Defence controller Rob West said council staff and contractors were working to reopen roads
reinstate water supplies on the West Harbour and Otago Peninsula and help members of the community who needed aid
West Harbour from Ravensbourne to Deborah Bay was subject to a precautionary boil water notice
Carey’s Bay and Deborah Bay - but not St Leonards
which was supplied by a different reservoir
As an interim measure water was being supplied to those areas from a reservoir at Port Chalmers
Water trucks offering clean drinking water remained at Roseneath
Level 1 water restrictions were in place for Outram and Waikouaiti
Many road closures remained in place around the city
State Highway 88 to Port Chalmers has reopened this morning
with single-lane sections and speed limits around slip areas
Clutha’s state of emergency was lifted at noon yesterday
A statement from the Clutha District Council said it had been put in place on Friday when State Highway 1 closed north of Milton
Kiwirail South Island infrastructure manager Gary Ikin said there had been many slips along the 340km Main South Line (MSL) between Timaru and Invercargill
Track inspections on Saturday led to the reopening of the northern- and southern-most section of the track
but it remained closed between Oamaru and Clinton yesterday
Some slips were relatively minor "but others are significant - with material blocking the tracks or falling away below the rail line"
"There are also some small slips which we continue to monitor closely
and places where floodwaters have washed out the tracks
"The most damaged area appears to be north of Dunedin
where there are a number of substantial slips above and below the tracks."
Retaining walls and other structures would need to be built where earth below the tracks had fallen away
There was also a slip on the Port Chalmers Branch Line which was blocking rail access to the port
South of Dunedin about 7km of track was still underwater due to the Taieri River flooding
Staff would not be able to properly inspect this track and make repairs until the flood waters have receded
staff and contractors began repair work in many areas on Saturday
Geo-technical investigations were undertaken around Shag Point and the more substantial repairs had begun
"We want to reopen the MSL as quickly as we can
"There is still a lot of work to do over the coming days to make sure the line is safe for freight services to run."
A police spokesman said alongside civil defence and search and rescue teams
police assisted with a number of evacuations overnight Thursday
and assisted with traffic management on flood-affected roads
Police also carried out reassurance and prevention patrols across the area over the course of the weekend
assisting the community and responding to calls for service
MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker said Dunedin got 76mm of rain on Thursday and on Friday got 70.4mm
The city’s average for the month of October was 69.3mm of rain
Rather than any flash flooding there had been a "constant stream of moisture" over the coastal Otago area
"It was partly the fact that it just kept on going and going and going and going with no real let up"

Unsuspecting passengers are being caught out by rogue car or cab companies and it is costing them hundreds of dollars to go just a few kilometres up the road
One woman was charged nearly $800 for a 19km trip from the Auckland suburb of Ponsonby to West Harbour
The Small Passenger Service Association (SPSA) is an industry body for taxis
ride shares and shuttles and its spokesperson Warren Quirke told Checkpoint $800 for 19km was at the top end of the complaints it had received
"[Complaints] are normally under the $200 mark but [travelling] anywhere between ...10km and 25km [costing] up to $200 is not uncommon."
It was disappointing that these drivers were able sometimes to charge that legally
"If the fare is a negotiated price for the trip taking place
if they're not getting agreement with the passenger prior to the trip taking place and then demanding that afterwards
that is illegal and that should not be happening."
For drivers who did not advertise their fares
there should be a verbal agreement between the driver and the passenger about the likely cost of the journey
The basis of the likely fare between point A and point B should always be discussed
there's no airport charges so it'll be [a certain] price'
including traditional taxi companies which generally used meters and had their fares displayed
so passengers knew exactly how much they were paying per kilometre
where the fare price was agreed when the person accepted the ride via the app
The third group were independent taxi operators
where drivers were not affiliated to a taxi company and did not have a manager
Some of these independent operators used meters
"When this first started happening they weren't using meters and they weren't negotiating so ..
back a couple of years ago they were having arguments."
but independent operators could easily have multiple tariff rates - for example
"When they're doing this sort of thing it actually looks a lot more legit when you get to the end of the trip and it's there on a screen and that passenger feels obligated to pay it because it looks legit."
Asked who passengers could complain to if they thought they were being charged an exorbitant amount for a trip
Quirke said there was really nobody to go to
"NZTA are the regulators of the small passenger service industry
however they will not get involved in issues regarding complaints
"They will direct complainants to take it up with the taxi company manager
Now of course when you have an independent operator that driver is the manager and they are untraceable - they're very
"The second place they tell you to go is to the Disputes Tribunal
if you can't track down the person there's no way you'll be able to bring them before the tribunal."
it was probably too late to do anything once you were inside the car if you saw the meter charge climbing ridiculously high
look for reputable companies - all SPSA member companies are bound by a code of practice," he said
The best option was to avoid taking these types of cabs in the first place
they should make sure to negotiate the fare before leaving
People were being ripped off for exorbitant prices all around the country - although Queenstown was probably the worst place in New Zealand for it
people coming in as tourists who get taken advantage of
Unfortunately you get international tourists and they get the full Kiwi experience of getting ripped off by these drivers."

Road crews are out today assessing damage to infrastructure and starting work to get all roads reopened
and some that have affected houses," Dunedin Civil Defence controller Sandy Graham said
By lunchtime Saturday more than 60 roads were sill closed
17 in Clutha District - but many highways had reopened
But many other roads had also been affected by the flooding and slips
so while people have been told to stay put unless necessary
anyone using the roads has been warned to do so with "extreme caution"
New slips and fresh road closures are still expected because the ground is so sodden
Emergency Management Otago group manager Matt Alley said
but has warned that road closures could affect those going to or from the airport
the council said their focus is to open the main arterial routes
"and provide access to the isolated areas including Toko Mouth

Several sections of highway south of Dunedin that were closed into the morning were reopened before midday
SH85 from Kyeburn to Palmerston had been reopened
SH1 north of Dunedin between Hampden to Evansdale had reopened by 1pm Saturday
Contractors there had been dealing with a 300 cubic metre slip of rock just south of Waikouaiti
After yesterday's heavy rain red weather warnings were lifted by MetService by about 8pm Friday
the final severe weather forecast for Otago - a yellow heavy rain watch - was lifted from the map by mid-morning Saturday
Conditions forecasters had warned could generate thunderstorms across the South Island until Saturday evening had largely gone
And while Clutha could still see "heavy thundery conditions" into Saturday evening
only showers were expected to accompany the clouds
people should keep up-to-date with the latest forecasts
Water: Water is still out for Dunedin's West Harbour and Otago Peninsula areas
Infrastructure has been damaged by a huge slip near Ravensbourne
and people are being asked to conserve water
Dunedin mayor Jules Radich said "with any luck" the water to the end of the peninsula could be reconnected by the end of Saturday
But the slip was expected to make restoring water to Port Chalmers and West Harbour communities "a significant logistical difficulty"
It is not yet known how long it will take to restore water to Dunedin's West Harbour and Otago Peninsula areas
On Saturday afternoon people can take containers to collect drinking water from tanks at Vauxhall
Mcandrew Bay and Portobello (check the DCC website as they may shift)
there are disruptions to the water supply for Tuapeka East
And Tapanui has been issued an urgent conserve water notice as intake at the water treatment plant is cut off
A tanker is available at Bushyhill Park with drinking water - and Clutha District Council said they would prefer that water is used before the town supply
"While the water is currently safe to drink
we encourage you to fill up any drinking/cooking water from the tanker
We are running extremely low in the Tapanui reservoirs."
Waitaki District Council warned people in Awamoko and Windsor to conserve water
Welfare centres: An evacuation centre is open at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin
The East Otago Community Centre is also open for people to take shelter there
and anyone seeking shelter is reminded to take any medicines or medical equipment they may need
"Pets are also allowed if caged or under control," the council said
three welfare centres that were open earlier have now closed
but the Red Cross is still running one at Te Whare Puāwai o Tokomairaro in Milton
Waitaki District Council has now closed a welfare centre that was operating at Hampden Hall as those in need of a place to stay - mostly travellers - have been given places to stay with locals
Other essential services: Mt Cooee landfill and all Clutha transfer stations have been closed due to the heavy rain
Dogs and cats should be kept indoors until the floodwaters have gone, as cats can become trapped in areas by the water and dogs are at risk of injury or illness from swimming in contaminated water where hidden objects could also injure them, SPCA advice online said
Emergency Management Otago group manager Matt Alley said support is available for farmers through the Rural Support Trust (0800 787 254)
and dairy providers can contact milk suppliers if they have any concerns
Otago regional councillor Lloyd McCall said stock and pastures had been very much affected
But he warned farmers should prioritise their own well-being and safety
so they could do their best to keep looking after their stock
and to keep remembering that spring and summer are on their way
Insurance lawyer Peter Woods spoke to RNZ in 2023
about what to know about claiming insurance after damage to your home from floods
He said while people's instinct is often to get rid of flood-damaged items immediately
that could create problems for insurance claims
He recommended they speak to their insurance company about their plans to get rid of things before going taking action
he warned people to get photos of makes and models and any details that can help prove what the items are and their value
"You've got an obligation to prove your loss
which means that you should be taking photos of the damage
photos of the contents - [but] you should keep them even though you're pulling them out
"The insurance company should have the opportunity to check the contents before you dispose of them ..
because otherwise there is a risk the insurer will argue about the value of the material that's being disposed of."

West Harbour Community Board chairwoman Ange McErlane’s comments come in response to reports that Kāinga Ora has halted its development in Albertson Ave
"I and the members of the West Harbour Community Board are very disappointed to read about the delay/halting of the Albertson Ave housing project completion here in Port Chalmers
and were in some cases due to return when the new homes were built."
The original plan was to demolish 11 former state homes to create 20 new homes that are up to modern insulation standards
But the housing agency confirmed this week the second half of the project had been put on hold pending further information from the government — before it had completed building the first half of the project
Ms McErlane said this was a "bad move by government
as it was "caught in the middle of a government policy"
"I understand even some of Kāinga Ora were in the dark about this decision."
The government commissioned a review of the housing agency
the government restructured the Kāinga Ora board and has tasked the new members with a "turnaround" plan for the agency
which has meant certain projects have been put on hold
But Ms McErlane said the Albertson Ave project needed to continue instead of pausing halfway
who deserve to have a warm dry home that they were promised
and shows a total disregard for these people and is disrespectful to our community
"The board like the community are very disappointed with this news and would like more information on the process and how and when this issue will be resolved."
Board representatives would be happy to meet Kāinga Ora representatives to better understand this decision
but also make the case for the needs of the community and the housing it was promised
The Otago Daily Times sent Kāinga Ora questions about the development
including why the project was "under assessment"
how much the project had cost so far and what recent consultation there had been with the community
It declined to answer those questions and instead repeated its earlier statement that the redevelopment of these sites was "under assessment while we confirm our social housing projects for the next two years
with a focus on priority locations and best value for money"
Housing Minister Chris Bishop declined to comment

Police found guns during an operation with Australian police
By RNZ
More than 200 charges have been made against 20 people as part of a joint Australasian taskforce targeting motorcycle gangs
A total of 28 search warrants were executed during a week - dubbed the “Week of Action” by Australian and New Zealand police - between August 5 and 9
Police uncovered a synthetic drug laboratory in Auckland’s West Harbour and seized nearly 300kg of drugs
More than $520,000 of cash and three firearms were also seized in the Waitematā
Auckland and Wellington region throughout the week
Two other joint operations, involving New Zealand Customs and New Zealand Police
involved a two-year co-ordinated investigation into a major Chinese drug smuggling syndicate based in a southeast Auckland suburb
Approximately $4 million in assets was also restrained
Operation Fix also saw three arrests and a total of approximately 180kg of methamphetamine seized in a central Auckland-based operation targeting a Mexican crime syndicate
One man was arrested when he attempted to flee the country from Auckland Airport
following the discovery of a container filled with scrap metal and 175kg of methamphetamine at Tauranga Port on July 26
executed search warrants at hotel rooms and Air bnb units located within Auckland’s CBD
uncovering a further 5kg of methamphetamine and making two further arrests
The only high-reach ladder truck in Auckland broke down last night
West Harbour Community Board chairwoman Ange McErlane said the centre of most community responses would be the Port Chalmers Town Hall
The building had a long history of being "everything on the planet" for the local community
it had 21 different rooms and housed local government and customs as well as serving as town hall
fire brigade station and police sergeant’s residence
It even housed a small morgue at one point
"So it has always been a centre of the community."
An upgrade of the building completed in 2004 included earthquake strengthening
It also has full kitchen and bathroom facilities
One of the main issues in the area is if the main road to town becomes impassable due to slips or flooding
"It has happened before — there has been a huge slip in Ravensbourne
where the road disappeared and people could not get to town," she said
Slips and downed trees have also closed Upper Junction Rd above Sawyers Bay in previous storm events
While the town could be cut off from the city
it benefits from having access to resources such as the Harbour Health Port Chalmers
the local Four Square Port Chalmers supermarket and emergency services such as the Port Chalmers Police Station and Port Chalmers Volunteer Fire Brigade
"I think probably we are very lucky to have Port Otago here."
with the help of local community and business fundraising as well as funds from Port Otago
the fire brigade was able to buy a first-response 4-wheel-drive ute
That vehicle was useful for accessing smaller areas where a fire truck might struggle to gain access
While the town has great resources that will come into play during an emergency
it is also important for individual households to think about making their own contingency plans
This could include planning to have items such as spare water for three days and creating a list of contacts for times of crisis
The West Harbour Community Board has created an information sheet with useful details for organisations such as Neighbourhood Support
It also provides space for households to list specific contacts for organisations such as electricity or gas suppliers
The card also has space to record neighbours’ details
Copies of the cards are available at the Port Chalmers Library
"You need to know in your plan how you are going to make sure that everybody is safe and how you are going to contact them," Ms McErlane said
Anticipating what households might need to do in an emergency was a good idea
"The thing is that people often don’t really think that it is going to happen in their lifetime
The call comes as the second stage of the 20-house Kāinga Ora project at Albertson Ave
remains in limbo due to the government housing agency taking it off its priority list
West Harbour Community Board member Kristina Goldsmith has been talking to Kāinga Ora about the community’s concerns
She said she was informed late last week that the second part of the Albertson Ave development could not go ahead at this stage
"If the reports in the media are any indication
Ms Goldsmith said the situation was hugely upsetting for the community and the prospective tenants
An old state housing development was razed late last year in order to make room for the proposed modern Kāinga Ora houses
Ms Goldsmith said although the tenants at the old development had been moved to new premises
they would still feel "displaced" because they had been uprooted from their community
"Where the houses used to be is now a bare site
"[Kāinga Ora] has said its people would work on the area to make it safe for children
but I haven’t seen anything and I doubt there will be before Christmas."
Kāinga Ora regional director Kerrie Young told the ODT it was working through an assessment of proposed social housing projects
so we can deliver social housing in areas where it is most needed"
"Our project at 2-12 Albertson Ave has now been assessed and we have decided not to progress with developing the site in the 2025 financial year
as it does not meet our assessment criteria for this initial stage
"This does not mean the project has been ‘cancelled’ and we now have decisions to make about the future of the site
which may include re-working the development plans for the 2026 financial year."
a report prepared by former prime minister Bill English said that Kāinga Ora was too big
too much in debt and too slow in building new houses
The report recommended opening up the market for more community social housing developers
The government is due to make an announcement about Kāinga Ora’s future work programme shortly
Ms Goldsmith said she was tired of the "political finger-pointing" by both the Labour and National parties
"I understand these projects can be expensive
but we know the government had already spent about $1 million to get the Albertson Ave project to this stage
"Whatever the reason for the cost increases
Ms Goldsmith was worried about the government playing regions against one another when it came to distributing social housing
"There’s been a real lack of transparency."
Community board chairwoman Ange McErlane said they would prepare a letter to Housing Minister Chris Bishop outlining their concerns
more than 405 people were on the social housing register in Dunedin

Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria was in the city Wednesday to announce the completion of track construction to directly link the West Harbour GO Station to the main Lakeshore West rail line between Toronto and Niagara
West Harbour was on a dead-end section of track that forced some GO trains to back in and out of the station
New stop is also on track to open this year on the edge of Stoney Creek
Rail improvements in Hamilton will increase commuter service to West Harbour GO Station — and eventually make it easier to hop the train at a new East-City station expected to open this year
Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria was in the city Wednesday to announce the completion of track construction to directly link the James Street North station to the main Lakeshore West rail line between Toronto and Niagara
The new connection will mean “faster
more convenient and more frequent GO train options” for commuters
with up to four times more trips available for train travellers between Niagara Falls and Hamilton’s West Harbour station in particular
Those trip should also be up to 15 minutes faster round-trip
the station saw around 953 weekday boardings on average — an increase from 762 in 2023
Details about new trips and stops at West Harbour GO were not yet available because track testing is still underway
but Metrolinx said an updated schedule will be released “in the coming weeks.”
The changes will also aid eventual commuter train access to the long-planned Confederation station on the edge of Stoney Creek
At one stage, a new station on Centennial Parkway was supposed to open in 2019
but changes in government and a scaled-back design delayed construction
Sarkaria said much of the “major work” on the new station is now complete
“We are very confident we can open that facility this year as well.”
The minister was last in town last fall to announce the start of long-delayed procurement for Hamilton’s off-and-on-again light-rail transit project
Since then, a tariff war started by U.S
President Donald Trump has prompted the province to threaten a ban on U.S
A request for qualifications (RFQ) process to vet prospective bidders on a first phase of construction closed in February
When asked if the trade war had caused problems or delays for Hamilton’s LRT
Sarkaria said he expected a “good news” update on the project in the near future
He also argued such major rapid transit projects provide “an opportunity” to support Canadian industry during tough times
“We need to start those projects that much quicker
we need to get people working,” he said

West Harbour Community Board member Jarrod Hodson said the overgrown council-owned grass verges around Ravensbourne and surrounding suburbs were due to the decision made to only take care of grass about 1m from the road or footpath
This has been going on for literally four years
The community had been complaining about the grassy wilderness their neighbourhoods were turning into over the years and noted that every other suburb in Dunedin seemed to be "very nice and orderly"
"When I went up to Roslyn the verges were pristine — I mean
The long and flowing grass had prompted questions about fire safety
and whether there was a risk of the hillside going up in flames on particularly hot and dry days
but now it’s just too long for my mower to get through," Mr Hodson said
When the area 1m from the road and footpath was cut
grass clippings were left to gather in drains and gutters — sprouting and taking root in some drains
Many of the council-owned grass verges in Ravensbourne were too steep and dangerous for locals to go out and attempt to hack away at the long grass on them
Many fix-it notes to the Dunedin City Council had been submitted
but submitters had been met with silence on the issue
"The community has been talking about this for years
but it’s falling on deaf ears and we’re sick of it ..
I’m also tired of relaying the same problem to the council again and again."
The Dunedin City Council said it would respond to questions today

West Harbour, Southern California’s vibrant waterfront destination on the LA Waterfront, has announced the addition of over 11612sqm (125,000sqft) of new experiential and food tenants.
Phase 2 tenants include The West Harbor Wheel & West Harbor Park, The King of Padel, OAKBERRY Acai, a new San Pedro Fish Market location, and al fresco finds Miller Butler pizza and Coffee with Creme and Sugar at the Berth 84 Pop-Up Park.
These additions join the previously announced off-leash membership dog park Bark Social, as well as Harbor Breeze Cruises, Wheel Fun Rentals and Catalina Tea Bar, which are currently open along West Harbor’s Promenade.
The development’s rapid leasing momentum follows the completion of Building A, a major Phase 1 construction milestone. Construction of Building B is already underway and is estimated for completion in 2025. West Harbour has also unveiled a 360-degree Panorama Model to showcase the fully built-out project site, including a first look at the latest tenant attractions.
West Harbor Park and The West Harbor Wheel by SkyView Partners (2395sqm)
“The West Harbor Wheel and park will become an iconic feature of the West Harbor project, which aims to enhance the Los Angeles waterfront experience with exceptional shopping, dining, and recreational activities,” SkyView Partners managing partner, Todd Schneider, said. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring this level of family-fun, grandkids-to-grandparents excitement to San Pedro and the Los Angeles area.”
The San Diego-based company will introduce the largest group of outdoor pickleball and padel courts in Los Angeles, the only waterfront racquet sports collection of its kind in Southern California. Six padel courts and 10 pickleball courts will be available for open play and club and league games. The King of Padel offers tournaments, glow-in-the dark events, social mixers, clinics, and more.
OAKBERRY Acai will carry the brand’s full menu, including signature, made-to-order acai bowls, unlimited toppings, smoothies and more. The company’s acai is sustainably sourced from Brazil’s Amazon rainforest and is all-natural, organic, and rich in antioxidants.
The San Pedro Fish Market will move to a larger waterfront-facing site adjacent to Berth 84 Pop-Up Park. In the new location, the famous fish market restaurant and grille will bring back its popular seafood market experience, including live lobster and crab. This latest version of the Fish Market is the last step before it eventually moves to its planned brick-and-mortar location in Building B.
This will be West Harbor’s dynamic new waterfront park dedicated to strategically selected pop-up concepts for eating, drinking, and discovering the unexpected. Located at the foot of downtown San Pedro’s Arts District, this innovative setting will be a place for entrepreneurs to experiment and for visitors to enjoy fresh experiences, products and services. New additions Miller Butler and Coffee with Creme and Sugar joins established favourites along West Harbor’s Promenade.
This will be the company’s first-ever West Coast location, scheduled to open in 2025. Indoor/outdoor plans for the premier off-leash membership dog park include a dog-friendly bar, restaurant, event space, a self-serve wash station and an expansive, professionally monitored off-leash beer garden, featuring dog- and eco-friendly turf. Bark Social offers a wide range of menu items for pups and their two-legged guests, including craft beer, cocktails, wine, coffee, and snacks

City councillors approved a long-anticipated plan for a 45-storey tower at Hamilton’s evolving west harbour in November 2023
An artists’ rendering from 2018 shows Waterfront Shores’ development proposal for Pier 8
Waterfront Shores plans to build roughly 1,645 residential units at Pier 8 at Hamilton’s west harbour
Waterfront Shores plan envisions a mix of residential and commercial development at Pier 8
A gloomy financial outlook in a slumping housing market is clouding a long-anticipated vision for a mixed-use development on city lands at Hamilton’s west harbour
The nationwide downturn has delayed Waterfront Shores’ launch of sales and marketing, including a presentation centre at Pier 8’s vacant Discovery Centre
chair of the city’s west harbour development subcommittee
said after a project update from staff this week
I think everyone wants to see action down there.”
noting the Waterfront Shores project isn’t the only residential development to be hampered by the market woes
the city selected the consortium to transform the city-owned land into a harbourfront community and followed up with a development agreement in 2021
The plan envisions roughly 1,645 residential units and 70,000 square feet of commercial space across nine blocks, complementing the city’s ongoing renewal of public amenities at the west harbour
The maximum height across the condo and townhouse site is eight storeys
which is the controversial outcome of a settled provincial land tribunal appeal over the proposed development
Staff have noted the finished product — with the development planned to be built in phases over several years — is expected to generate between $8 million and $9 million a year in tax revenue
the nine city-owned blocks are to be sold to Waterfront Shores at fair market value
But when that happens is up in the air given the current market challenges
suggested the staff report before city politicians this week
Waterfront Shores submitted a phasing plan to the city that had it moving to buy two easterly blocks in March 2023
the developers provided a revised schedule that pushed those initial purchases to April 2024
Waterfront Shores provided the city with a financial feasibility analysis that indicated the “builder threshold profit” for the first two blocks had “not been met.”
the consortium opted for a “six-month extension,” which is permitted under the development agreement
before submitting another pro forma in October
which has spurred another six-month pause in the process
Waterfront Shores can hit the brakes up to three times
before deciding to buy the blocks in play or “forfeit” development rights on those parcels
“The premise of pausing is to make sure that the development itself is feasible from a financial aspect
both for ourselves and the development partner,” Chris Phillips
manager of the city’s land development office
The market conditions are the overriding factor
but he also noted municipal planning exercises
such as land-use changes needed to allow the 45-storey tower
have also affected the project’s timing
But it’s in the interest of both parties to ensure “development can happen as soon as possible,” he said
noting city staff are reviewing the consortium’s latest financial forecast with a plan to report back to the subcommittee
principal at consortium partner Tercot Communities
couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday about the project’s latest chapter
Last November, after council approved the highrise proposal
Valela was upbeat about advancing the project
“This was the last piece of the puzzle that is now going to start the real process of us getting shovels in the ground,” he told The Spectator at the time
“I think Hamilton is on its way to becoming a world-class waterfront city
Phillips noted Waterfront Shores has already provided the city with $2.5 million in “upfront payments” as part of its commitment under the development agreement
Councillors, meanwhile, have asked staff to terminate the developers’ five-year Discovery Centre lease
which started in March 2023 but hasn’t resulted in a sales office
“I don’t know why we would prolong it if we think our development partner is not going to use it,” Spadafora said
The city and the public library are pursuing other uses for the building beside Williams Fresh Café
Indigenous gathering space and exhibition space to showcase local cultural heritage
Waterfront Shores is exploring a purpose-built presentation centre elsewhere on Pier 8 to have a long-term presence there as the project progresses
a separate long-awaited plan to redevelop a city-owned brownfield into a creative industries hub came to an end earlier this fall
In October, the city and Aeon Studio Group agreed to scrap their agreement for the lands off Barton Street West
including high interest rates and the sluggish construction landscape
A third project with private developers, the redevelopment of the former Jamesville CityHousing townhouse complex into a mixed-income community
is delayed by an Ontario Land Tribunal dispute with Canadian National Railway

Hamiltonians will soon be able to take the GO Train to one of the seven natural wonders of the world
Ontario’s Minister of Transportation stood at West Harbour GO Station to officially announce that Niagara weekend trains will soon stop in Hamilton following the completion of new tracks connecting the station’s east side to the main rail line
The signals for the track were made operational a few weeks ago
Metrolinx will amend its Lakeshore West train schedules “in the coming weeks” to include a West Harbour stop for trains operating to Niagara Falls during weekends and holidays
all three Niagara weekday roundtrips will stop at West Harbour
Niagara trains make five fewer stops between Hamilton and Toronto’s Union Station than the hourly Lakeshore West trains
The transit agency states it will begin the added service as soon as possible
only the morning peak-hour train from Niagara and the afternoon peak-hour train to Niagara stop at West Harbour
These trains lost around 15 minutes in travel time at West Harbour due to a need to reverse in and out of the station
The morning rush-hour Niagara train to Toronto departs West Harbour at 7:55 a.m
The afternoon rush-hour train to Niagara arrives at West Harbour at 6:32 p.m
Two Toronto-bound weekday trains currently pass West Harbour at approximately 2:20 p.m
[An hourly Lakeshore West train from West Harbour to Toronto Union departs at 2:25 p.m.]
Two Niagara-bound weekday trains pass at approximately 10:10 a.m
[An hourly Lakeshore West train arrives at 10:09 a.m.]
Metrolinx operates three train round-trips each day on weekends and holidays
The Niagara-bound trains pass West Harbour at approximately 10:10 a.m.
Toronto-bound trains pass West Harbour at approximately 1:20 p.m.
One of Canada’s most congested rail interchanges lies between Hamilton’s West Harbour GO and Burlington’s Aldershot GO
numerous provincial governments have spent hundreds of millions constructing new Metrolinx-owned rail tracks on the Lakeshore West line
including numerous new tracks through Bayview Junction
The new tracks allow GO trains to operate through the Junction to West Harbour without waiting for freight traffic or dealing with VIA Rail delays
Metrolinx operational staff stated in one-on-one conversations that trains will be able to flow through the Junction
West Harbour service will not experience bypasses or cancelled trips to Niagara
GO Transit will announce the schedule changes via media release
and also to customers directly using its email update service

Am I correct in thinking there will be more than 3 trains per day from Niagara to Union
two of the three trips bypass West Harbour
Are there plans for more trips to Niagara in 2025
I am not familiar with factors such as the Welland Canal bridge
I get the feeling neither of them really understand what you’re asking
The second gentleman is just being sycophantic
I don’t know how 13:30 was chosen as the time the doors needed to be locked to increase safety
The safety and security question is site specific and the answer relates to the broader issues occurring across the GO Network
The Minister is not directly involved in site operations
nor briefed on day-to-day site specific operations
a Minister and their staff will further review matters brought up in questions
Metrolinx provided operational staff after the media questions
they gave further details regarding the implementation of new service
I’m pleased to see a government transit agency working to quickly adjust schedules
if they’d just unlock the front doors to West Harbour and allow access to the washrooms
Thank you for the comment. I asked the Minister this question. You can view the question / answer at approximately 10:30 in this video: https://www.facebook.com/OntarioTransportation/videos/9571502106267289

Construction on the West Harbour GO Station track has been completed
paving the way for expanded GO train service between Hamilton and Niagara Falls and improved transit connections across the region
The track upgrade links the previously dead-end West Harbour GO Station to the main Lakeshore West rail line
allowing all GO trains — including weekend and off-peak trips — to stop at the station
The new connection will also support future service to the Confederation GO Station in east Hamilton
“As we work to expand GO service across the region
the completion of West Harbour Station means faster
more convenient and more frequent GO train options with four times as many trips for commuters travelling between Hamilton and Niagara Falls,” said Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria
trains at West Harbour had to reverse in and out of the station
With the new through-track now operational
travel times are expected to improve for St
offering a more efficient route in and out of Hamilton
Metrolinx interim president and CEO Michael Lindsay said the upgrades will provide greater flexibility and more choices for riders across the network
all Niagara trains will stop at West Harbour GO Station
This means customers traveling between Niagara and Hamilton to Toronto will have even more trips to choose from,” said Lindsay
“We’re providing more choice for our customers and year-round access to popular destinations between Niagara and Toronto.”
The new track will also enhance connections to Hamilton Street Railway bus services and other local transit
streamlining commutes for residents and visitors in the region
The Lakeshore West schedule will be adjusted in the coming weeks following completion of final testing on the upgraded track
“These completed upgrades at West Harbour GO Station will save Niagara commuters more than an hour a week and open the way for additional service as the province moves ahead with the Grimsby GO Station,” said Sam Oosterhoff
“We are providing commuters in Niagara with easier access to fast

The City of Hamilton and the Aeon Studio Group agreed Tuesday to end their memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the Barton-Tiffany lands project
Councillor Cameron Kroetsch and the media developer posted on Facebook that both the city and the studio group mutually agreed to end their plans to redevelop a city-owned area in the city’s west harbour into a new creative industry hub
The studio group’s statement reads that the project fell apart due to a number of factors
including high interest rates and slow construction growth
“The land development market has collapsed
Arts grant funding has dried up,” reads the social media post

The group is calling this latest decision “strategic” to reconstitute the team to potentially realize the new project space at a future date
The newly renovated space was marketed to become an economic cluster with studios housing film
There was also extended plans to build storefronts along Barton and Tiffany Streets with grocery stores
and restaurants along with 750 residential spaces as well
Aeon Bayfront Studios has been operating in the space on Queen Street North since 2021
The 80,000 square-foot facility was fit to produce many television shows and films in the city
The city says they are now in works to re-envision a new long-term strategy for the land
Currently the city plans to build a temporary shelter at Barton

The media company and the city plans to hold confidential discussions about the MOU during Wednesday’s general issues committee meeting
For those who have been watching the Aeon Studio Group project, here’s an update. “The City of Hamilton is disappointed with the outcome of the City and Aeon Studio Group’s mutually agreed upon termination of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), effective immediately.” #HamOnt
