The Nordic Bemowo residential development harmoniously integrates with its urban surroundings
and distinctive roofscape which together enrich the urban fabric of a flourishing new community
Situated within Warsaw's tranquil Bemowo district
the new development plays a pivotal role in the area's comprehensive development strategy
Meticulous consideration is given to public spaces
culminating in the creation of a high-quality and unmistakable landmark for Warsaw
© Nate Cook PhotographyThe entire project has been divided into phases that form a sequence of coherent architectural and planning repertoires within a single masterplan. The assumptions behind the design have translated into a homogeneous and open complex of buildings spread over a large area avoiding chaotic sprawl, fragmentation and closed enclaves. The coherent urban design of the development is complemented by the elegant architecture of the buildings.
© Nate Cook PhotographyThe development consists of two types of buildings in terms of floor plan, namely horizontal units also known as 'z's' for their z-shaped plan and 'marker buildings' or 'point blocks' whose plan forms a square.
© Nate Cook PhotographyThe design also has hints of nordic architecture as the developer is from Finland
Being a coherent urban complex with a publicly accessible square
the housing estate is conducive to integration between Nordic Bemowo residents and their neighbors
The natural materials give the buildings an 'earthy quality' and the carefully designed spaces add value to the development as a whole
where everyone can find a space for themselves

In 2022, Warsaw's Bemowo district welcomed six new residents in some of its most-visited spots
known jointly as "Bemisie" ("misie" is a Polish word of endearment meaning "cute little bears")
were actually a winning project proposed by the locals in a participatory budgeting program
All six bears represent different themes related to Bemowo's past and current traditions
Most of them revolve around its sports and military heritage
as this area of Warsaw has always had ties with the Polish Army
located in the park surrounding abandoned 19th-century fortifications known as Fort Bema

they are located within walking distance of each other and you can easily visit them all in an hour or two

The Ministry of National Defense announces a shooting incident at the South Hills firing range in Poland
after the Sky Guardians Anti-Aircraft Defense Detachment conducted a shooting session
and two ammunition elements fell in the neighboring village
the Sky Guardians Anti-Aircraft Defense Detachment conducted a night shooting session with the Gepard systems in use
the detachment commander was informed that two ammunition elements had fallen in the village of Bemowo Piskie
causing material damage," representatives of the Ministry of National Defense announced on Friday
They mentioned that at the disposal of the Polish military police
the detachment command will provide all the necessary data and information to clarify the circumstances in which this event occurred
The Anti-Aircraft Defense Detachment generated by the anti-aircraft defense structures of the Romanian Army is in the fifteenth rotation at the Bemowo Piskie Training Area
with the mission of ensuring the Enhanced Forward Presence on the Northeastern flank of the Alliance
the approximately 100 Romanian anti-aircraft gunners participate in exercises and training activities alongside American
aiming to improve cohesion and increase the level of interoperability among NATO member troops
Poland — When American troops first deployed to northeast Poland in 2017 to lead a NATO enhanced Forward Presence battle group
the population of the village of Bemowo Piskie grew by a third overnight
locals have grown used to the military presence and the occasional columns of tanks that pass through the village
Some say having the Americans in the village
which lies just south of the strategic Suwalki Corridor — a border area between Poland and Lithuania that is sandwiched between Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad — makes them feel safer
“American soldiers in Bemowo Piskie enjoy being here and we like having them,” said Kate
a villager who didn’t want to give her last name
The U.S.-led battle group is one of four on NATO’s eastern flank aimed at deterring Russian aggression in Europe
all of which were annexed by the Soviet Union immediately after World War II
only regaining their freedom in 1991 when the USSR crumbled
Russia often breaches the air space of the three Baltic states
has conducted crippling cyberattacks against them
and in 2014 was accused by the Estonians of abducting a security official at the border
“some of the most important territory within NATO’s borders.”
“It is NATO’s physical link between the Baltic littoral to the north and the European plain to the south
NATO’s credibility as a security guarantor to Lithuania
and Estonia could be seriously undermined,” the report said
Having American and other NATO troops in Bemowo Piskie is seen as a deterrent to Russian aggression because
an attack on the battle group would be seen as an attack on the entire alliance
But with around 15,000 Russian troops based in Kaliningrad
Romanian and British forces totals about 1,200 troops
The troops know their job would be to hold off any attackers until NATO could strike back on a much larger scale
“We have a training plan in case anything happens,” said Capt
Lightning Troop commander for 3rd Squadron
“We don’t feel that being this close [to Russia] is an issue
It is an opportunity for us to be in Bemowo Piskie in case anything happens.”
American troops cycle through Bemowo Piskie in six-month rotations
living in barracks inside the fenced-off training area of around 42,000 acres
where they regularly participate in exercises with forces from other NATO member states
the battle group took part in “kill tank,” an exercise designed to “teach soldiers about the functions and capabilities of weapons systems,” Staley said
Bemowo Piskie was host to the first Interoperability Games
testing how well allied troops can use each other’s equipment and vehicles
Other than the language barrier and a 10 p.m
the American troops are free to take advantage of the village’s amenities – two small grocery stores and two restaurants
“The soldiers enjoy going out in town and out at night
Some of the Americans came to Poland with apprehensions – not because of how close they’d be to Russia but because they’d heard stories about the long
cold winters and how small and isolated Bemowo Piskie is
but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be,” said Spc
who arrived in January with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment
“There are soccer and basketball teams,” and Bercsik attends Polish lessons with a few other soldiers
“It puts the stress away for a couple of hours.”
Poland has begun building a razor-wire fence along its 130-mile border with the Russian military exclave of Kaliningrad over concerns that Moscow could instigate a migration crisis in the area
Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak told reporters in Warsaw
“The barrier will be made up of three rows of razor wire
such as is used by armies the world over,” Blaszczak said
also would include an electronic monitoring system and cameras
Although Blaszczak cited a potential migrant crisis in the area
much like the one last year along Poland’s border with Belarus
the broader area has been a long-standing security concern for NATO allies
A quick-reaction NATO force that consists of hundreds of U.S
and other allied soldiers is based about 50 miles from Russia’s military hub in Kaliningrad
Blaszczak said the fencing on the border with Kaliningrad is intended to accomplish the same result as the barrier Poland built to block the earlier influx of migrants
Polish and Western leaders accused Belarus
of instigating the migration in an attempt to create division within the European Union
It was effective in “preventing a hybrid attack from Belarus or slowing that attack down significantly,” he said

After traveling over 700 miles from their home in Vilseck
to their new area of operations in Bemowo Piskie
deployed in support of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland and conducted a transfer of authority Jan
relinquished his authority over eFP BG-P to the incoming commander
“Training on wartime tasks was only part of the mission here,” said O’Neill during his farewell speech reminiscing on his squadron’s experiences in Poland
“Forging lasting relationships and strengthening the connecting tissue which bonds us is equally important
Andy Gallo and 3/2CR are some of the best the U.S
Given that BG-P is comprised of more than a thousand Soldiers from four different countries
it is critical that all eFP BG-P units work well together
“We arrive here excited for our mission,” said Gallo
“Our goal is to continue to enhance the battle group’s ability to train and if necessary
We are really looking forward to working with our allies and continuing to enhance our interoperability.”
NATO’s eFP BG-P has many advantages to being so diverse
Each troop-contributing nation provides their own unique capabilities to the battle group
Deploying significant amounts of equipment and Soldiers across a continent has many obstacles and limitations
due to the alliance’s unique ability to deploy combat ready units anywhere in the world
the deployment process was much easier than expected
“I’m really proud of our command teams and our allied units,” said Sgt
the noncommissioned officer in charge of operations for 3/2CR and now over BG-P
“Assistance from our host nation [Poland] and our allies facilitated a high degree of success in the deployment here.”
After such an effective deployment to Poland
it is anticipated that eFP BG-P and subsequently 3/2CR will develop a stronger relationship with allies in the NATO chain of command and codify new standards for the alliance
A commonly used message heard throughout the alliance and stated by Gallo

A military vehicle drives through Bemowo Piskie
The village has a NATO base and about 1,300 residents.Anna Liminowicz/The Globe and Mail
Kamila Radzaj holds her three-year-old son Mikolaj close as she thinks about her husband who’s serving in the Polish army
Radzaj lives on the top floor of a squat three-storey apartment building that overlooks a sprawling military complex next to Bemowo Piskie
The base is home to more than 4,000 Polish and NATO soldiers and it’s a stone’s throw from Poland’s borders with Belarus and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad
Everyone here knows all too well that if a war involving Poland and Russia ever broke out
soldiers from Bemowo Piskie would be among the first to fight
said as she stood in her small kitchen clutching her son
has been in the army for six years and he’s spent most of his time lately patrolling the Belarusian border trying to stop Middle Eastern migrants from crossing into Poland
But Russia’s standoff over Ukraine is never far from his mind
“He doesn’t like to talk about it,” said Ms
Poland braces for an influx of nearly a million refugees fleeing Ukraine
The area around Bemowo Piskie has been a military garrison for more than 200 years and today it’s one of the largest Polish army encampments in the country
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization also set up an Enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup at the base
That brought in more than 1,000 troops from the United States
Britain has sent 350 extra troops to the base and there have been reports that NATO is considering expanding the battle group
Bemowo Piskie specializes in preparing soldiers to fight in wooded terrain that’s common across this part of Europe
Roughly 15,000 hectares of the surrounding forest is constantly in use for tank drills
Signs posted along the highway warn people to stay clear of the woods
and armoured vehicles are so common on the road that it’s strewn with potholes
the nearby town of Orzysz was the site of a notorious military prison where harsh punishment was meted out to tens of thousands of deserters and men who failed to show up for compulsory service
many Poles refer to Orzysz as home of the “criminal unit.”
Poland’s populist Law and Justice government has been eager to change that impression and instill a sense of pride in Orzysz’s military history
a sign on the highway into Orzysz welcomes visitors to the “military capital of Poland” and the walls of several buildings have been painted with giant Polish flags
The phrase “feeling proud and patriotic” is written across the top of each flag along with the Law and Justice party logo
And just in case anyone missed the welcome sign on the highway
the same slogan is splashed across a mural on a long wall outside the town hall that also depicts three soldiers carrying machine guns
Kamila Radzaj and her three-year-old son Mikolaj in her apartment in Bemowo Piskie
Katarzyna Gakzak works in Orzysz’s military museum
which opened six years ago and is already set to double in size thanks to a government grant
Gakzak proudly shows off the museum’s collection of uniforms
some dating back to the 1700s when Orzysz was part of Prussia and known as Arys
and outside a real tank sits next to a children’s playground
She’s reluctant to talk about Russia – “I don’t watch TV” – but she says Orzysz’s 5,500 residents have become immune to the sounds of war
“We joke that we probably wouldn’t even notice if the Russians invaded because we are so used to hearing gunfire around here,” she said
Poland an awkward ally to West’s unified front in face of Russian military buildup
Marcin Lipinski is also tight-lipped about the Russia situation
But he’s happy to talk about how his business has flourished because of the base and the recent military activity
He owns four restaurants around Orzysz and plans to open a fifth this summer
He also runs a car-rental company and leases 14 apartments
opened just after the NATO battle group arrived
an American-themed decor and offers a range of burgers and steaks that few locals can afford
the restaurant was jammed with boisterous young Americans jockeying for tables and swilling back beer
It’s enough for me for the whole of my life.”
American soldiers enjoy themselves at The Dollar Bar & Grill in Orzysz
said NATO troops had been an economic godsend to every town all the way to Elk
American soldiers helped renovate the school gym in Bemowo Piskie and build a library
Romanian troops also regularly play volleyball with a group of locals and next month the base is holding a women’s volleyball tournament
The community even raised enough money to fix up the village hall and on Friday about 50 villagers gathered for a potluck supper
a dance and several shots of vodka to celebrate the renovated venue
and shopping centres are very happy,” said Mr
whose daughter married an American soldier two years ago
in front of the NATO base in Bemowo Piskie
Plenty of people are worried about Russia invading Ukraine and what that will mean for relatives and friends in the Polish army
“The old people are scared,” taxi driver Jakub Malicki said as he waited for fares outside the gates of the base
“My mother is scared.” Most people he knows joined the army to get a job
also has friends in the Polish army and he wonders if NATO countries will support Poland or Ukraine if war breaks out
I will help you.’ But if something happens

Soldiers of allied armies are interested in our country’s history
They say that it helps them understand Poles better
but also makes them aware of why they have been deployed to Poland
or Multinational Division North East – these are just a few of the many units in Poland where allied soldiers serve
There are almost 7,000 of them in our country
The US Army soldiers make up the most numerous group
The NATO division in Elbląg alone can boast soldiers of as many as 17 nationalities
Many of them have come to Poland from faraway places
so they are naturally curious about our country
They can often be seen walking the streets
“Sometimes the foreign soldiers serving at the unit ask me what is worth seeing
I usually tell them to visit Gdańsk or Toruń
because I think these cities have amazing atmosphere
Historical architecture is especially impressive to American soldiers
Most of them have only seen such old buildings in films,” says Maj Dariusz Guzenda
the press officer of Multinational Division North East
Many soldiers visit historically significant places where Poland’s fate was determined
usually visit the 19th-century Boyen Fortress
or Adolf Hitler’s headquarters – the Wolf’s Lair
We have seen many places connected with WWII
Poland has played a very significant role in the history of the whole world
and to see it all with my own eyes,” says Ssg Michael Doling of the US Army
It seems that our Allies are mostly interested in the WWII period
They are curious about the fate of the “cursed soldiers,” whose portraits they can often see on the Poles’ clothes
The soldiers were invited to Warsaw by the Polish National Foundation
They were surprised by what they learned about the fights of 1944 from Andreas Karabin
“The soldiers were shocked with the story of the first days of the uprising in Warsaw’s Wola district
They could not believe that so many civilians died during that time,” says the guide
“It was new to them that the English supported us in 1944
and they were also very surprised to see a replica of the American Liberator in the middle of the museum,” he adds
The visit was especially appreciated by Sgt Arturo Guzman of the US Army
“The story of how people fought to protect their beloved city was amazing
but I hadn’t realized that the sewers were so important during the fights
so it was a very valuable lesson to me,” he says
The meeting of the NATO soldiers with combatants was also very emotional
They listened to stories told by Col Bronisław “Józef” Maciaszyk
who served in the 27th Volhynian Infantry Division
“I’m very happy we had a chance to listen to the veterans’ stories
but the determination with which soldiers protect their homeland remains the same
I think we can learn a lot from these people,” adds Sgt Guzman
We want to thank you for that,” addressed the NATO soldiers Col Maciaszyk
you are here to make sure it never happens again,” added Capt Socha
The soldiers visited the Museum of the Second World War
and walked around the Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo
the territory of the former WWII concentration camp
None of us were able to comment on what we had seen
Three buses of tough soldiers trained to fight
were returning home in total silence,” she recalls
Sgt Guzman confirms the feeling: “I was so shocked I found it hard to breathe
It is a very sad and a very important part of Polish and world history
Allies are also interested in our armament
the soldiers of our divisional command went to Bydgoszcz to visit the Land Forces Museum
They came back enchanted,” says Maj Guzenda
Many of them also visited the Polish Army Museum
It houses an incredibly wide range of armament
I really liked Hussar wings,” recalls Spec Timothy Lee from the USA
“I spent a lot of time looking at cavalry equipment
so it was very interesting to learn what my predecessors used to fight,” adds Col Bell from Great Britain
Maj Zbigniew Zielonka
of the Military Center for Civic Education
often talks to the allied soldiers about Polish history
Several years ago he served in Afghanistan
then as a representative of the Military University of Land Forces
He was asked by his superiors to prepare a lecture on Polish history
which he gave on the occasion of the 3 May Constitution Day
Everybody loved his lecture so much that he soon prepared more
historical booklets for the participants of the NATO Summit or the World Youth Day
while still giving lectures on Polish history
Now his listeners are mostly allied armies’ soldiers stationing in Poland
“It is not an easy task to present a cross-section of Polish history in only 70 minutes
and still make it interesting and intelligible,” says the officer
Lectures include fragments of films – battle scenes from Krzyżacy
or a documentary fragment showing a German battleship bombarding Westerplatte
Lecturers also play Jacek Kaczmarski’s song “Mury” (Walls) performed by Jean-Michel Jarre
entitled “40:1,” telling the story of Polish heroes from the battle of Wizna
Americans liked it so much that each time they saw us afterwards
they shouted: »fourty to one«,” says Maj Zielonka
The officer confirms that WWII is the most interesting subject for the listeners
were surprised that we fought on two fronts in September 1939
many soldiers didn’t know what happened to our country after the end of the war,” he adds
The Allies are truly interested in our history
the soldiers take pictures and post them on social media
They also call their families and tell them of their impressions
They assure us they will return to Poland with their families
they will become our country’s natural ambassadors,” says Agnieszka Dydycz
What do the soldiers themselves think of Polish history
“It is important that we know what Poland had to face
if only to understand why we are here,” says Capt Marin Bulog from Croatia
so we should know what circumstances led us to where we are now
We also have to know the past to predict what the future might bring,” adds Spec Lee
commander of the 2nd Squadron of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment
who has been stationing in Masuria for the last nine months
he gave a speech in which he mentioned Józef Piłsudski
as well as the battle of Grunwald and Vienna
We are proud to have become a part of its history and to have trained alongside a nation with such a strong warrior ethos,” he said
