COVID-19 pandemic has brought about unfavourable changes regarding both physical activity (PA) levels and patterns of behaviour associated with mental health. The study sought to assess PA levels and kinesiophobia in medical students from Poland and Belarus taking account of gender.
A total of 779 students (405 students from University of Grodno (UG), Belarus, and 374 students from John Paul II University of Applied Sciences (ABNS) in Biala Podlaska, Poland) took part in the study. Women constituted 74.2% of the study population. A diagnostic survey as well as two research tools, i.e., the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)—short form, and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TAMPA) were employed in the study.
Students from ABNS manifested significantly higher levels of PA. Taking into account gender, male respondents displayed significantly higher levels of MET-min/week (MET—metabolic equivalent of task). As for kinesiophobia, significantly higher levels were demonstrated by students from UG. Its higher levels were also noted among women.
The findings of the study did not reveal strong correlations between kinesiophobia and PA levels in students from Poland and Belarus in the context of different approaches to the pandemic that both countries adopted. Students from ABNS proved to be more physically active. In turn, participants from UG exhibited significantly higher levels of kinesiophobia. Gender was the factor that significantly differentiated levels of kinesiophobia, with women displaying its higher levels.

Background: COVID-19 pandemic has brought about unfavourable changes regarding both physical activity (PA) levels and patterns of behaviour associated with mental health
The study sought to assess PA levels and kinesiophobia in medical students from Poland and Belarus taking account of gender
Methods: A total of 779 students (405 students from University of Grodno (UG)
and 374 students from John Paul II University of Applied Sciences (ABNS) in Biala Podlaska
Women constituted 74.2% of the study population
A diagnostic survey as well as two research tools
the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)—short form
and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TAMPA) were employed in the study
Results: Students from ABNS manifested significantly higher levels of PA
male respondents displayed significantly higher levels of MET-min/week (MET—metabolic equivalent of task)
significantly higher levels were demonstrated by students from UG
Its higher levels were also noted among women
Conclusion: The findings of the study did not reveal strong correlations between kinesiophobia and PA levels in students from Poland and Belarus in the context of different approaches to the pandemic that both countries adopted
Students from ABNS proved to be more physically active
participants from UG exhibited significantly higher levels of kinesiophobia
Gender was the factor that significantly differentiated levels of kinesiophobia
Poland introduced tough restrictions (lockdown) to prevent the spread of the disease
The approach adopted by Belarus was much less restrictive compared to that taken in Poland
Belarus was one of the few Eastern European countries that did not impose any quarantine
Belarus did not adopt a similar antipandemic strategy
denied the presence of the virus and took no action during the first months of the pandemic
The two countries adopted completely different attitudes to the COVID-19 pandemic
which may have affected PA and kinesiophobia levels in the populations
While some pandemic-related stressors affect everyone, many have an impact on women in particular (13). Research shows that women experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorders (14, 15)
Alsalhe et al. (10) confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic exerts a considerable influence on mental health, which is manifested, among others, by anxiety. Simultaneously, they stress the importance of PA in the process of alleviating anxiety symptoms. More and more evidence points to numerous benefits of taking up PA (16). Moderate-intensity PA improves immunological functions and reduces the risk of viral respiratory infections (17)
Considerable differences in PA levels between regions, countries, age groups and gender can be observed (23). In the majority of countries, women are less active than men. When a slight increase in PA levels in adolescents was noted, it was usually among boys, which enhances gender differences in PA that are lifelong (19)
Regular PA performed at a younger age may be a significant motivator for activity at an older age. It can be explained through the continuity theory (25), which states that human beings are inclined to lead the lifestyle as it has been when it comes to leisure time and habits (26). Knapik et al. (27) noted a strong negative correlation between kinesiophobia and habitual physical activity in women aged 60 or older
It points to lower levels of fear of movement in physically active older women
The issues of physical activity and kinesiophobia
correlations between manifested levels of these variables as well as possible health consequences provided inspiration to carry out the present study
we deal with a more or less conscious reaction (“lack of time”
“no immediate results”) or denial (removing the need for activity from one’s awareness)
Kinesiophobia belongs to is a category of avoidance behaviours (31)
It should be treated not as fear of pain but as a broader element
fear of movement-related pain—feeling physical and/or mental discomfort (pain
negative perception of particular forms of activity by the society)
It is a manifestation of personality predisposition to physical activity (32). It can be seen as fear of fatigue or exhaustion and, from a psychological standpoint, as fear of being ridiculed for not performing any PA. Socio-demographic factors such as gender may affect kinesiophobia levels (29, 33)
The study aimed to assess the levels of PA and kinesiophobia in students from two countries in which different approaches to the COVID-19 pandemic were adopted. In Poland, a lot of restrictions were introduced, whereas a completely different approach was favoured in Belarus. Bearing in mind that, from the point of view of mental health, young people (including students) and women may be more susceptible to negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (39)
the current study sought to assess the levels of PA and kinesiophobia in medical students from Poland and Belarus taking into consideration gender
It involved finding out what (if any) correlations there are between these variables
students complete their secondary education and begin higher education at a later age
A diagnostic survey as well as three research tools
the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TAMPA) and the authors’ own questionnaire regarding respondents’ socio-demographic data were employed in the study
research results were analysed with regard to gender
the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for IPAQ was 0.74
TAMPA was developed by Kori et al. in order to assess fear of movement-related pain or (re)injury (41). This questionnaire consists of 17 items, where each item is assessed on a four-point Likert scale. The total score of the scale ranges from 17 to 68, and scores above 37 point to a high degree of kinesiophobia (42)
Internal consistency assessed with Cronbach’s alpha was 0.72
Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05
The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to measure internal consistency of the results
it is assumed that results above 0.7 point to satisfactory reliability of the scale
Men (M) constituted 25.8% of all the study participants (N = 779). This proportion reflects a tendency that women dominate when it comes to attending medical courses in both countries (Table 1)
significant differences were noted in the whole study population as well as in respondents from ABNS
The first step to achieve the aim of the study was to determine PA levels in students from Poland and Belarus
The data presented in Table 2 show that students from ABNS were considerably more active
significantly higher values of MET-min/week were found in men
Percentage distribution of the respondents’ PA levels (IPAQ)
Assuming that gender may determine PA levels, results presented in Figure 2 show that a larger proportion of men met the IPAQ criteria for the highest level of PA—more than half of the male respondents demonstrated high PA levels. This correlation was observed in students from both universities (Figure 2)
Percentage distribution of the respondents’ PA levels taking account of gender (IPAQ)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, kinesiophobia was significantly greater among students from UG (the index value >37 indicates its high level). Higher index values were also noted among women, and the difference was significant. Male and female students from ABNS did not manifest high levels of kinesiophobia (Table 4)
Data presented in Table 6 indicate that for the whole study population
gender significantly differentiated both kinesiophobia and PA levels
in the groups of students both from Poland and Belarus
significant differences between women and men were only noted in MET-min/week
In none of the analysed areas (groups) were strong correlations between kinesiophobia levels and MET-min/week found (Table 6). Table 7 shows data defining the strength of correlations between these indices
Both for the whole study population and for participants from ABNS and UG
an attempt was made at assessing PA levels as well as behaviours related to mental health (kinesiophobia) in two countries that adopted different approaches to the pandemic
we assumed that apart from different systemic activities
gender may constitute a variable determining health-related behaviours regarding physical (in)activity
The findings of our study showed that men displayed higher PA levels during the pandemic
Taking into account different approaches to the pandemic in the countries included in the study
we noted higher values of MET-min/week and lower levels of kinesiophobia in students from Poland
The COVID-19 pandemic was the time of changes in everyday activities of students. During lockdown, young people spent most of the time at home and they were mainly inactive. They did not socialise enough; they did not have enough social interactions and opportunities to move around freely, which meant more sedentary behaviours (45). According to Huang et al. (46)
young people are at a higher risk of suffering from mental disorders compared to other age groups
Women demonstrated higher levels of kinesiophobia in the psychological domain
Qiu et al. (11) attempted to measure psychological distress (anxiety
despair) in the general population of China during the COVID-19 pandemic
They stated that women were more prone to stress and more likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder
young people who possess knowledge regarding health promotion and prevention
An interesting thing is that the highest levels of kinesiophobia were found in moderately active individuals (with the exception of UG M)
In the study on patients who were infected with SARS-CoV-2, Bahar Özdemir (56) noted a significant correlation between kinesiophobia and low back pain
This observation may indicate that pain increases fear of movement
Restrictions introduced during the pandemic (e.g.
distance learning) forced our study participants to exhibit sedentary behaviours
which may have led to musculoskeletal pains
In our study we analysed correlations between kinesiophobia and declared PA levels in students from Poland and Belarus in the context of different approaches to the pandemic adopted in these countries
The study did not show strong correlations between these variables
both in general and in particular groups (countries)
who claimed that women demonstrated lower levels of PA before lockdown but they did not have a tendency to reduce PA levels during the pandemic to such an extent as men did
which was carried out when the pandemic was being ‘suppressed’
point to higher levels of PA among men from both countries
Restrictions introduced during the pandemic encourage people to stay at home
which increases the amount of time spent sitting and enhances sedentary behaviours
special attention must be paid to anti-pandemic policies adopted by governments (closing schools or universities
limiting possibilities of realising sports and recreational programmes
etc.) in order to avoid negative effects not only on physical but also on mental health
With regard to results presented in the current work as well the findings of the study conducted by Saulicz et al. (68), kinesiophobia is a feature inseparably connected with PA. As for the self-determination theory, high levels of kinesiophobia may create an emotional barrier determining inner motivation to perform PA (68)
Interactions between low levels of PA and high levels of kinesiophobia constitute a barrier to getting involved in PA
thus forming the aforementioned “vicious circle”
One of them is the determination of socio-economic status of the participants
Due to the fact that the study involved students from Grodno and Biala Podlaska
it is difficult to generalise the findings to the whole population in both countries (Belarus and Poland) or to representatives of both genders
we are convinced that they point to a certain trend
Another limitation of the study is its retrospective and cross-sectional character
The respondents completed the questionnaires at one point in time only
which may have increased the probability of not remembering earlier situations in detail
Identifying kinesiophobia and dealing with it by taking an individual multidisciplinary approach may lead to an improvement in the quality of life
The present study aimed to assess kinesiophobia and PA in medical students taking account of gender and thereby to provide a better insight into correlations between these variables
it should be stressed that the study did not include peaks of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland and in Belarus as the aim was to determine the levels of PA and kinesiophobia in the context of the pandemic (effects of the COVID-19 pandemic)
A longitudinal study conducted over a longer period of time might have provided more thorough data
due to the unpredictability and high dynamics of the spread of SARS-CoV-2
carrying out such research within the project was not possible (final stage of the COVID-19 pandemic)
Because of different approaches to the pandemic adopted in Poland and in Belarus
the participation of the students in broadly understood physical culture also differed
Students from Poland proved to be more physically active
which was confirmed by higher values of MET-min/week
study participants from Belarus manifested significantly higher levels of kinesiophobia
with women demonstrating its higher levels
no significant correlations between kinesiophobia and PA levels taking account of gender were revealed
who displayed high and moderate levels of PA

effective government action has led to a reduction in the VAT gap
we have increased the possibilities of the social and investment policy of the state
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has visited the Lublin Region Customs and Tax Office in Biała Podlaska
when the world is struggling with an economic crisis caused by events like Russian aggression against Ukraine or rising raw material prices
the Government is supporting the Polish people by cutting taxes or implementing its Anti-Inflation Shield
the Polish economy is in a stable condition
we expect state budget revenues to amount to approx
an increase of nearly 110% compared to 2015
and this is how we will shape the public finance system” said the Prime Minister during the visit
A reduction in the VAT gap is the result of a multi-element plan that has significantly hindered the operation of tax criminals – at every stage of their procedure
Increasingly stringent monitoring and sealing of the system means that the VAT carousel’s operating time is getting shorter
while funds obtained from criminal activities are becoming increasingly difficult to legalise under the guise of honest activity
which is due to the effective policy of implementing sealing tools as well as the actions of the National Revenue Administration
thanks to the modernisation of the tax administration
the revenues of the Polish state are stable
and thus can still be allocated to social programmes and investments
especially now that the world is struggling with inflation caused by events like Russian aggression against Ukraine
the VAT taxpayer list and electronic reporting
There are also other e-administration services
which are cash registers in the form of software or an e-receipt
The method of VAT settlement has also been simplified
The changes introduced have reduced the number of information-related obligations for those who pay this tax
Polish entrepreneurs can use the National e-Invoice System (KSeF)
This is the next stage of implementing innovative e-services in administration
facilitating settlements between companies and ensuring that their settlements are secure
We are consulting with the Polish people regarding the suitability of the draft budget law for 2023
The government has consistently increased revenues by effectively filling gaps in public finances
taking measures such as closing the VAT gap
This enables us to implement many programs addressed to the needs of the Polish people
the necessary funds have been secured for the continuation of the existing priority actions
as well as for the implementation of new ones including:
rising raw materials prices as well as the COVID-19 pandemic are having a negative impact on the state of the economy in many countries around the world
the Government is supporting the Polish people by cutting taxes or the implementing its Anti-Inflation Shield
state budget revenues will amount to approx
an increase of almost 110% compared to 2015

mass-produced kiosks sprouted up across Eastern Europe
many have gone out of use or vanished over the years

modernist kiosks sprouted up across Central and Eastern Europe
Vendors sold goods from these kiosks like food
A new book collects images of some of the survivors
Kiosk: The Last Modernist Booths Across Central and Eastern Europe published by the Polish publisher Zupagrafika features photos of more than 150 kiosks from cities like Berlin and Warsaw
It’s a delightfully specific ode to a lost architectural form—one that gives a unique lens into the history of Eastern Europe
These kiosks have been around long enough to witness the fall of the Soviet Union and the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe in the late 20th century
the tiny structures provided an economic lifeline
kiosks played a role much larger than the sum of their physical components,” says urban explorer Maciej Czarnecki
“They were miniatures of public spaces fostering new forms of social and economic interactions.”

1 we faced such a provocation,” Blaszczak said at a briefing with Polish soldiers in the northeastern city of Bialystok
referring to the alleged violation of the Polish border by Belarusian helicopters
the Polish Defense Ministry said that Belarusian military machines had violated Polish airspace
“We have to take into account further provocations
It will not be possible to destabilize the eastern part of our country
thanks to the service of the soldiers of the Polish Army
It was my command to strengthen security at the border,” Blaszczak said on Thursday

NOMI KALTMANN sits down to talk to her Caulfield neighbour
about the dramatic life’s journey he has led
THIS PAST DECEMBER, a clip did the rounds on social media showing 100-year-old Holocaust survivor Berysz Aurbach standing at the lectern of Melbourne’s Caulfield Bet Hamedrash Synagogue reciting Kaddish for his late mother
This moment was especially poignant as it almost did not happen
Synagogues in Melbourne had only reopened a few weeks prior following extensive Covid lockdowns which had shuttered all places of worship for many months during 2020
I found the video particularly moving because Berysz Aurbach is my neighbour
When my husband and I moved to Caulfield a few years ago
every Saturday morning at 9.30am we would see our new neighbour in his wheelchair
being pushed to synagogue by his son Moshe
This month is a cause for big celebration in our street: next Tuesday
Berysz will be celebrating his 101st birthday
To this day he can recite the prayers and Torah that he learnt as a youth in his local Polish Talmud Torah school
demonstrate the massive changes in healthcare and technology that have taken place since his mother died of typhus when he was a small baby
Berysz comes from a long line of Hasidic rabbis
His family had lived in the Polish town of Biala Podlaska for hundreds of years
which is known for its connection to the Ger Hasidic sect
as well as a half-brother from his father’s second marriage
and to this day he can recite the prayers and Torah that he learnt as a youth in his local Polish Talmud Torah school
Despite his age, Berysz has full movement and precise mental recall. He provided me with a copy of his two-and-a-half-hour Holocaust survivor testimony he recorded in 1996 for the Jewish Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick.
he spoke for over two hours with unrelenting clarity
with every detail identical to the original testimony he recorded 25 years prior
“My life is very rich; I have experienced many things,” he says
Berysz was one of the last survivors to be smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto on the eve of the uprising
“the ghetto was already burning and on fire” as he was taken to a safe house on the Polish side
His family history is intertwined with the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising
was the head of the right-wing Zionist youth group
which alongside other youth movements in the ghetto (including Hashomer Hatzair
led by Mordechai Anielewicz) formed the Jewish Fighting Organisation
his elder brother played an integral role in smuggling weapons and obtaining finance to pay for the arms that were used by Anielewicz and the other Jews to fight the Germans during the uprising
went to rich people in Warsaw to obtain money for arms,” he says
“Rich people gave him and other leaders money after my brother convinced them to fund resistance in the ghetto.”
It was through his brother that Berysz was provided safe passage from the ghetto
Berysz’s safety came with a terrible caveat: while he would be hidden on the Polish side
hiding places for other immediate family members in the ghetto
“My brother Mordechai didn’t have the full say on who went into hiding
It was a committee of members from the Hanoar Hazioni youth movement in the ghetto who made decisions about who was given a place in hiding” he says
“After a lot of arguments with the committee
Mordechai managed to find a place for me,” notes Berysz
But this decision was not without controversy
“Some people on the committee said he did too much for me
Mordechai Aurbach was also able to smuggle himself out to safety from the ghetto
“My brother had also arranged for himself a hiding place
Their father and brothers left behind in the ghetto were also killed
when the ghetto was set on fire by the Nazis,” he says.
I promise you: he will be putting us all in a nursing home before he goes into one
aside from his sister Esther who moved to Palestine prior to the outbreak of the Second World War
all his immediate family perished during the Holocaust
After realising that he had no one left in Poland
Berysz contacted an elderly uncle who had moved to Australia in 1936
“He sponsored my visa and allowed me to immigrate to Australia,” he says.
he found that the Jewish Cemetery had been destroyed and the tombstones had been used for making roads
The remaining Polish people in the town let the returning Jews know that during the war the Nazis had executed many Jews but had not afforded them proper burials
Instead they were buried in people’s yards scattered across the town
Berysz and a committee of other returned Holocaust survivors decided to bury these murdered Jews properly
gave up our time and worked to dig out these people from every yard and street and place the corpses into a communal grave.”
where he owned and operated a knitting mill on Lygon Street in Carlton
so he moved to Israel in search of a partner
so in 1956 I went to Israel.” While in Jerusalem
They got married and moved back to Australia and had three children
it is clear that remembering the past weighs heavily on them both
The mantlepieces in their home display the pictures of those who were killed in the Holocaust
as well as pictures of happier times in Berysz’s life
Speaking to a living legend in walking distance of my home had been a huge pleasure and learning experience
I promise you: he will be putting us all in a nursing home before he goes into one!”

A week after his grandson's birth two years ago
Elias Gefen was running errands close to his home in his electric wheelchair when a car struck him
a grim injury for an 87-year-old stroke survivor
the Germans corralled the Jewish inhabitants of Warsaw into a ghetto designed to expedite their extermination
Eli crawled out from under the wall and made his way by train to Russia
where he was arrested on false charges of espionage and sent to a Soviet gulag near the Arctic Circle
He wandered Eurasia until he crumpled up in Turkmenistan to die of typhoid fever – only to be taken in by a Jewish doctor who nursed him through a three-week delirium
When Eli gave his testimonial at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial in 2004
there were moments when he wept over what he had lived
His mother had died when he was 13 of septicemia
including the slaughter of her husband and three of her six children along with 200 members of the larger Gefen family
upon his return to Poland right after the war to visit her grave
he discovered the entire Jewish cemetery had been obliterated
Eli also wept when he recounted that the world-renowned surgeon who treated his son Edward for polio
refused to take payment when he found out Eli was a refugee newly arrived in Canada and struggling to build a new life
Eli had little experience of gentiles treating Jews with compassion
what it is to be a gentle and devoted husband
He was enormously proud to see his three grandchildren
Eli worked relentlessly to support his young family in jobs as diverse as roofer
would throw in an extra value to the other side
showing the practical and moral virtue of generosity of spirit
and he followed the ancient practice of laying on phylacteries until
as his grandchild Jacob was learning to walk and speak
He found deep solace at the end of his life by daily watching Jacob embrace with exuberance the coil that he was casting off; a renewal of lives stolen – and lived

Ruch w Rejonie Przeładunkowym Małaszewicze odbywa się na niespotykaną dotychczas skalę – informuje Cargotor
zarządca infrastruktury kolejowej z Grupy PKP Cargo
wjechało i wyjechało 379 par pociągów towarowych
łącznie było to ponad 28 tys
z czego 250 par pociągów stanowiły pociągi kontenerowe – precyzuje Cezary Mitrus
Cargotor nazywa to „rekordowymi ilościami towaru”
– O powierzchni 30 km kwadratowych z najnowocześniejszym układem torowym i rozwiązaniami w zakresie systemów sterowania ruchem kolejowym – zapowiadał w ubiegłym roku prezes Andrzej Sokolewicz
Wszystko za – bagatela – ponad 3 mld złotych
Pieniądze mają pochodzić z budżetu państwa i Unii Europejskiej
W ten sposób przepustowość Małaszewicz ma się zwiększyć aż czterokrotnie
Budowa ma się rozpocząć pod koniec 2021 roku i potrwać aż do 2028
