with some parts of the city recording as much as 120 litres of rain per square metre

The fire service intervened in the city around 1,000 times between Monday and Tuesday morning

the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) reported that around 120 litres of rain per square metre had fallen in Bielany
almost twice the previous record of 69 litres and double the rainfall norm for the whole month of August
where 94 litres of rain fell per square metre in 24 hours – 20 litres more than the previous record
Measurements in Bielany have been recorded for several decades and at Chopin Airport for almost 100 years
IMGW spokesman Grzegorz Walijewski told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily
“Imagine 10 10-litre buckets poured into a square measuring one metre by one metre,” said Walijewski
The newspaper did not state when the previous records were recorded
some of the city’s key roads flooded
including the S8 expressway and the tunnel on the S2 expressway leading to Chopin Airport
Aircraft take-offs and landings at the airport were temporarily suspended and the roof in the baggage claim area began to leak
Warehouse roofs also collapsed in some areas surrounding Warsaw
Heavy rainfall was also reported in other parts of the country
firefighters intervened 2,900 times across Poland
The fire service intervened about 1,000 times in Warsaw alone
Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski wrote on social media that he had held a joint staff meeting overnight with representatives of the provincial governor
the fire service and the police to coordinate a response to the downpour as quickly as possible
he urged residents to use urban transport and avoid flooded areas
“There are no disruptions to the metro service,” he added
The record rain came after a period of as much as two weeks of drought
Walijewski of IMGW told the newspaper that the heavy rainfall in Warsaw was the result of “very peculiar” atmospheric conditions
“It was…the meeting point of two different air masses: a very warm tropical mass laid to the east
And the tropical air has a very high humidity,” he said
tropical air would not have reached Poland so freely and would not come here so often,” the spokesman added
Polish orchard and vineyard owners have using bonfires to keep their crops warm amid a cold snap that followed unseasonably warm weather
But they say much damage has already been done and yields could be down up to 70% https://t.co/LlUmiHPABA

More than PLN 55 million will be spent on the thermal modernisation of the University Library and Rectorate buildings. Work on the first building is due to start in the second quarter of this year, and on the second at the turn of 2025 and 2026. Each of the renovations will take around 18 months.
- 'We assume that each of the renovations will take a minimum of 1.5 years,' explains the Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Management, dr habil. Radosław Sojak, NCU Prof. - This is quite a long period of extraordinary functioning for everyone who works in these buildings. On the other hand, you must bear in mind issues related to security of IT, data, the GDPR.
The thermomodernisation of both facilities will cost PLN 55 million. The majority of this amount (approximately PLN 30 million) will be subsidised by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The Nicolaus Copernicus University authorities must cover the rest with their own funds. They will allocate part of the State Treasury bonds, which were handed over to Polish universities by Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the end of November last year.
The work will include insulating the buildings, replacing insulation materials and installing photovoltaic panels on their roofs. The NCU authorities estimate that, once completed, the university will save several hundred thousand zloty a year, as these are currently the two most energy-intensive buildings on the Bielany campus.

Katarzyna Kowalska is a civil engineer, a ceramicist
and lives in this recently renovated 355-square-foot compact apartment in a four-story apartment block designed by a famous Polish architect couple in the 1960s
especially because of the closeness of the metro station
where there are a lot of trees — it is a really peaceful view
uncommon in new buildings,” Katarzyna writes
Katarzyna emphasizes that despite the small square footage
TV and furniture to take some rest: couch and big Togo chair,” she writes
when the sun is reaching the wooden kitchen fronts and white walls
I am a design and art lover; I really like to renovate furniture and the emotions these items give to me
which my mum bought me from the flea market (very cheap) and Bruno Rey’s chairs from the ’70s
which I designed with cooperation with the executive company — it is an element which separates the hall and living room and is a piece of art to me.”
We talk about different design solutions using our own apartments as an example (the name of our YT channel derives from the size of our apartment).”
For sure I am not minimalist if it goes to style
Katarzyna Kowalska’s Inspiration: Pinterest and Instagram were a mine of inspiration and ideas for me
thanks to the architect’s efforts (Maria and Kazimierz Piechotkowie)
was different from the socialist realism examples
The architecture of the building and its interiors were an inspiration and set the direction for the interior finishing materials e.g
we designed terrazzo similar to that used in the staircases of the building
We have to mention the iconic Togo armchair
a set of Bruno Rey chairs (model 3300) from the 1960s
We were inspired as well by handmade ceramics that Katarzyna creates on her own
Katarzyna Kowalska’s Favorite Element: It is hard to choose
but I really like the combination of sandy-blush kitchen fronts and maroon worktop with wooden edges
I am also a huge fan of my bathroom — I adore every element of this room
But if We have to choose — we especially like the kitchen — this is not only a place to prepare food but also the main furniture in the living room
Oak veneer kitchen doors are imperfect perfection
Architects Kalina and Robert Juchnevic’s Biggest Challenge: 1
It was difficult to keep balance between vintage items and newly designed elements — especially when the owner is a vintage lover
We “controlled” this balance using a detailed 3D model and creating a virtual apartment tour for the owner
Openwork structure separating entrance zone and living room — we had probably three different concepts and no final decision but we were waiting patiently… in the end of the construction
the owner fell in love with Alexander Calder’s mobiles and we loved the idea of using this motif at first sight [in the entryway partition]
Katarzyna Kowalska’s Proudest DIY: I am a creative person
who is the happiest during the art process
Two years ago I started making ceramic cups and I have a pretty big collection
I like the small cup with strawberries and a pink plate (as a complete)
It gives me an energy shot when I use it in the morning to drink my coffee
Is there something unique about your home or the way you use it
Katarzyna Kowalska – My partition “walls” are totally unique — they divide space
so I have a washing machine in my wardrobe and the vacuum cleaner under my bed
Architects Kalina and Robert Juchnevic – Our advice is very practical
even the very ordinary ones located in an open area will look like one million dollars
This can especially be said about small apartments… but not only small ones

will invest $1 million (4 million zloty) in solar installations at its production facilities in the country
The move is part of the renewable energy strategy of its owner
American confectionary giant Mondelez International
which last month reiterated its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050
Największy producent czekolady w Polsce zainwestuje w naszym kraju milion dolarów https://t.co/Regh4bC6Sj
— Business Insider Polska 🇵🇱 (@BIPolska) January 11, 2024
The investment will see photovoltaic panels with a total capacity of around 3 MW installed at three of Mondelez’s seven production facilities in Poland and will be accompanied by a programme to reduce electricity consumption at the plants
The first of the installations will be at the firm’s facility in Skarbimierz
and will be the largest such investment by Mondelez in Europe
with a total capacity of 999 kWp (kilowatt-peak of power)
It is also the first investment in Poland that has received approval for a direct power line connection between the installation and the factory under new regulations that came into force last September
This means that the electricity produced by the solar panels will go directly to the factory
The installation is expected to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint by almost 800 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year
Two further installations will be built near the firm’s plants in Bielany Wrocławskie and Jankowice near Poznań
Renewables generated a record 26% of Poland’s electricity in 2023
However, coal continued to produce most of the country’s power, accounting for almost two thirds of the energy mix https://t.co/JQqfMkOK4I
— Notes from Poland 🇵🇱 (@notesfrompoland) January 3, 2024
“The investment of approximately $1 million is a key moment in our renewable energy strategy,” said Roman Sitko
“It is also an expression of confidence in our Polish team and belief in the potential of the factories in Poland.”
Among the snacks produced by Mondelez in Poland are Milka chocolates and Oreo biscuits
as well as popular local products Delicje (chocolate-covered
jelly-filled biscuits) and Prince Polo (a wafer chocolate bar)
The firm employs over 5,000 staff in the country
Poland was the world’s fourth largest exporter of chocolate products in 2022, according to the International Trade Centre. That year, the country was also the world’s largest exporter of wafers and waffles
Poland has seen a rapid expansion in renewables in recent years, especially onshore wind and solar. In 2023, they generated around 26% of the country’s power
most electricity – 64% in 2023 – continues to be generated from coal
Mercedes and Ikea have appealed to Poland’s prime minister and parliament to support the development of green energy
Otherwise, "the Polish economy is in danger of losing its competitiveness and attractiveness", they warn https://t.co/ytVcdwwiT1

Ksawery Masiuk of Warszawa
Poland has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at NC State beginning in the 2023-2024 school year
I’m extremely happy to announce my verbal commitment with NC State University 🐺♦️ I’m very grateful for giving me this opportunity to continue my swimming and school career in one of the best teams in the USA 🇺🇸 GO PACK
Masiuk is currently competing at the 2022 European Junior Championships
There he has already won the 50 and 200 backstrokes
He will look to complete the backstroke sweep in the 100 backstroke final tomorrow night
He is the top seed in that by over a second and a half after setting a championship record of 53.11 in the event this morning
The NC State men captured the 2022 ACC Championship and went on to finish fourth at NCAAs
Masiuk’s converted times already have the chance to make a huge impact at the conference level
His best times would already make the A final of the 100 back
and 45.57 in the 100 fly to qualify for 2022 NCAAs
Masiuk will not be the first Polish swimmer on NC State’s roster as the team is home to Rafal Kusto and Kacper Stokowski
Stokowski was the 2022 NCAA 100 backstroke champion swimming a 44.04
Kusto is swimming a fifth year at NC State this fall and Stokowski is entering his senior season
If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected]
I remember one girl from my team who went to the USA to study and train
She came back with SCY times and all that and went to nationals because the conversions allowed her to swim
She got last in all three events she swam and was miles away from her converted times
Awesome opportunity for both Ksawery and NC State
The free Swim Time converter app I use gives SCY conversions of 44.93 and 1:40.73 from those LCM times
I’m thinking maybe you guys had the converter set for women by mistake
The “classic converter” doesn’t have a gender setting
The reality is that converters get wonky at the fringes
You are telling me that a guy who was 6th at the world LC championships will get no better than 8th at the NCAA
And add ACC Champion Bartosz Pisczcorowicz to the State Polish mafia…though after typing his name I understand why you left him out of the article
Dude got third at worlds and you don’t have him under 46???
These conversions are absolutely laughable he is going to destroy those by mid season
NC state has been developing some of the best backstrokes in the world for a couple years now I can’t wait to see what he can do there
they really have a good connection with Poland 🇵🇱
a 52.5 LCM backstroker isn’t even close to qualifying for NCAA’s
This man is going to be an absolute backstroke god under Holloway

The Run with a Book is an open running event for the UMK community and people sympathetic to our university
Its purpose is to promote exercise and popularize reading
The route will lead along a forest path and alleys in the Bielany academic forest
The name of the run refers to that great Polish writer; the year 2024 was proclaimed the Year of Witold Gombrowicz
as on August 4 we celebrate the 120th anniversary of the artist's birth
The event will include three races: Main Run
Relay Race and additional run: "Running Mother"
The competition office is located at the NCU Copernican Integration Centre (Olszewskiego 16 St.
The run starts at 11:00 in the forest nearby
The route runs along forest paths and alleys on the campus in Bielany (Toruń)
The four-person teams that will take part in the relay will have a total of 400 gallops to run (1 gallop equals about 3,5 meters)
In accordance with the specifics of the race
relay participants pass on to each other a book
In the supplementary competition - "Running Mother" - can participate teams of a mother and a child/children: each of them has the task of covering the entire route on their own two feet and with their own book in hand
There are rewards not only for the fastest runners
In one of the classifications (for runners with a book written by Witold Gombrowicz)
the result will be calculated using an algorithm that takes into account the run time
the weight of the book and a special conversion index that will be revealed just before the start of the run
Registration should be done before the event (until May 22
Payments (20 zł for NCU students and graduates) will be accepted on site on the day of the event
The event organisers are the NCU Alumni Programme and the NCU Marathon Club. More information about the run can be found at the event on Facebook (in Polish) and on the Alumni Programme page (in Polish)

- The Copernicus Integration Centre will be a long-lasting and vibrant reminder of the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus,' said Prof dr habil
during the official opening of the Centre on 12 September
The new place on the campus map is a space for
The NCU Copernican Integration Centre was established on the site of the New Bielany underground water intake emergency station at 16 Olszewskiego Street as a joint initiative of Nicolaus Copernicus University
the Municipality of Toruń and the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship government
– We are opening the Centre in a special year – the 550th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus' birth,' stressed Prof
– The focal point of the Year of Copernicus is
but we are all aware that in a few days the Congress will become history
that it would be worth leaving some kind of permanent trace of the event – something that would serve the University community and the city's inhabitants for decades
The founding of the Centre was made possible thanks to the donation of the property to the University by the municipal company Toruń Waterworks
Three historic buildings have been adapted for the Centre: a two-storey engine house
known as the 'Moomins' house' because of its distinctive shape; a residential building
originally occupied by the driver who operated the station; and a nearby outbuilding with adjoining land
– Now this place has taken on a new dimension and new splendour and
it will fulfil an important purpose: the integration of the academic community in matters which go beyond lecture theatres and research laboratories
and which concern good relations,' said Michał Zaleski
– I have no doubt that the decision of Toruń Waterworks was the right one
and I thank the Rector for having the courage to take on the management of this area
The new location on the map of the university campus was intended as a space for joint activities
the Academic Ombudsman and the YUFE student counselling service have found their home in the Centre
A gallery has also been set up at the Centre
where male and female students of NCU's Faculty of Fine Arts will be able to display their works
will also have an important function in helping international members of the university community to organise their stay in Poland and find their way around the university
The Director of the NCU Copernican Integration Centre Małgorzata Błaszczak
emphasises that the Centre is intended to be a place open to everyone
– We welcome everyone who feels like visiting us," she says
– Our task is to integrate both the academic
We already host events aimed at different groups of people: children
And all this in an amazing space - we are in the centre of the city
and it feels like we are in the middle of a forest
Part of the green area that surrounds the buildings is occupied by the Edible Garden
observe nature and expand their knowledge of horticulture
sustainability and rational management of natural resources
The garden is growing under the guidance of urban gardener Paulina Jeziorek
The entire area is complemented by a relaxation area with hammocks and deckchairs and a garden gazebo, created for barbecue gatherings. Copernican Integration Centre on Facebook
The decision to build a new pump station was taken in 1915
It was to supplement the water shortage in the network of the dynamically developing city
The water intake was designated in the area of the then pioneer training ground in Bielany
Implementation of the project began in 1916 and work continued until May 1917
a picturesque two-storey engine house was built
which has retained its characteristic block built in the style of the early 20th century architecture
and a one-storey residential house with a high attic
The Nowe Bielany station was entered in the register of monuments in 1982 as an important element of the city's cultural identity

Even the most elaborate and modern playground doesn't excite you anymore
How about seeking an oasis of wild nature in the big city
ladders and seesaws for a "forest playground"
you'll find many green areas that are truly quite forest-like
This park and forest area is closest to the city center
You can easily reach it by cycling along the Vistula embankments
Some paths are indeed asphalt (which parents with strollers will appreciate)
there's a newly opened swimming area at Zakrzówek with floating pools

These are places that probably everyone knows
we've often been to the Zoo and Kosciuszko Mound
the lucky ones have visited the Camaldolese Monastery in Bielany
paths and meadows in this largest Krakow forest
It's worth visiting in any season: for a walk
Looking for a forest with a stream for throwing sticks and stones
And a forest playground with hiding places on the clearing
Located right on the city's border are the Tyniec Forests - you can get here by cycling along the Vistula embankments or by public transport
We fell in love with Tyniec Forests for their "rich relief" (countless number of holes
and also for the abundance of "dead wood": millions of small sticks and large branches
fallen trees - this is the real "forest playground"!!
Tynieckie Forest is part of the Bielany-Tynieckie Landscape Park
In the neighboring Zabierzow (for residents of Mydlniki
Bronowice or Pradnik Bialy it will be closer than the Market Square) Grzybowska Valley awaits
Here too there's a comfortable asphalt alley
but adventure-thirsty kids often choose side paths: steep slopes and rocks
Zabierzów Forest offers trails suitable for strollers and paths for children
Both Niepolomice Forest and Dulowska Forest resemble well-kept economic forests
thanks to this they are perfect for shorter and longer family bike trips
This extensive forest stretches from the town of Dulowa to Trzebinia - offering many kilometers of asphalt bike paths and the ruins of Tenczyn Castle in Rudno
where you may be able to see knight tournament shows
you'll find many bike paths and paths suitable for a forest walk with a stroller
The flat terrain of Niepolomice Forest is a plus - bike routes are therefore easier than in other forests around Krakow
