once viewed as the Goliath to independent bookstores' David
is now making a nostalgia-filled return with the opening of dozens of bookstores across the country
including one in Lake Orion that opened Wednesday
— including the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Royal Oak in 2014 — primarily due to competition from online sales and Amazon
the bookstore chain opened more stores than it had in the decade from 2009-19
The bookseller expects to open more than 50 new bookstores in 2024
a Barnes & Noble opened in Rochester Hills
Another store is expected to open in Grand Rapids in 2025
in a news release announcing the opening of the Lake Orion store
said it is "enjoying a period of tremendous growth" by employing a strategy its smaller competitors once used by handing over more local control to the stores
That means no two stores are exactly alike. A Barnes & Noble less than 10 miles away, which opened in 2019 at The Village of Rochester Hills shopping center
is just over half the size of a traditional Barnes & Noble and features nonbook merchandise such as vinyl records
At the new store that opened Wednesday at Baldwin Commons
in a space formerly occupied by Nordstrom Rack
dozens of people lined up in front ahead of its opening at 10 a.m
"It’s nice to see a Barnes & Noble opening," Jason Brzeg
who was one of the first shoppers to visit the Barnes & Noble in Lake Orion when it opened Wednesday
said it was refreshing to see a brick-and-mortar store opening instead of closing down
I feel like I’m contributing to both and not completely giving away to a corporate competitor," Brzeg said
Barterian planned to work remotely from Barnes & Noble while her mother shopped
She knew it'd be a good place to work because she remembers the experience of visiting Barnes & Noble when she was younger
"You can go in and no one bothers you and you can sit down and read for hours," she said
vice president of store planning and design at Barnes & Noble
calls the bookstore "a gathering place" that offers shoppers the experience of seeing and touching the books and talking with the store staff about book recommendations
"My favorite is customers talking to each other," Flanigan said
you would stand at a table and have your hand on a book
'I cried all day' or 'I laughed all day.' But I think it is about the interaction and ..
the environment that we create opening these bookstores."
While the bookstores have long been gathering places and continue to have cafes
the interior of the Barnes & Noble looks very different than the Barnes & Noble of 20 years ago
The overall look is "light and airy," she said
with light oak bookshelves and a light paint color
Each section is designed to take the shopper on a "journey throughout the store," Flanigan said
which is what brought out three generations of shoppers to the store's opening
"The smell of new books (is the) best smell ever," Meredith Johnston
who was there with her mother and daughter
worked at a Barnes & Noble store for 25 years
"I love them with all of my heart," said Melton
The Lake Orion store is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m

The South Korean steel group Posco has now started work on a new plant for electric vehicle motor cores in Brzeg
The components are intended for electric cars from the European plants of Hyundai and Kia
Posco had already announced the plan for the new plant in Poland in January as part of the major order from sister companies Hyundai and Kia
It will be built on a 100,000 square metre site and is scheduled for completion in mid-2025
The plant will manufacture traction motor cores with stator and rotor
These are a key component in the drivetrain of most electric cars
but do not play a role in combustion engines
Production at the plant in Brzeg will initially focus on the delivery of 1.03 million traction motor cores in the second half of 2025
These will be used specifically for Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles destined for the European market
The motor cores will then be installed in the drive units at the factory of Hyundai’s own supplier Hyundai Mobis
The Slovakian plant of Hyundai Mobis is located in Zilina in the immediate vicinity of the Kia vehicle plant there
Around 480,000 drive units with Posco engine cores will go to the Kia vehicle plant in Zilina
The remaining 550,000 units will be sent on to the Hyundai plant in Turkey
The Hyundai Assan Otomotive plant in Izmit mainly produces small cars and also the electric version of the Hyundai Kona with the small battery
Posco is aiming to establish a production system by 2030 that is capable of producing 1.2 million drive motor cores per year exclusively at the Polish factory
In view of increasing protectionism in Europe and the US
the company emphasises that it is important for it to have its own sites in various economic regions around the world
Posco also has corresponding factories for drive motor cores in South Korea
the Posco Group is starting to build nickel and precursor production facilities in Pohang
50,000 tonnes of high-purity nickel are to be produced here annually
enough for the batteries of 1.2 million electric vehicles

Print WARSAW — Polish President Andrzej Duda has accused the LGBT rights movement of promoting a viewpoint more harmful than communism
agreeing with another conservative politician who said that “LGBT is not people
Duda made the comments Saturday in the small southwestern town of Brzeg as he campaigns for re-election in Poland
a predominantly Catholic nation that spent more than four decades under communist rule
Rights for LGBT people are emerging as a key campaign theme in the coronavirus-delayed presidential election as the race grows close between Duda, backed by the nationalist conservative ruling party, and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who has called for tolerance for gay and lesbian people.
Duda, 48, told his supporters that his parents’ generation did not struggle to cast off communism only to now accept “an ideology” that he thinks “is even more destructive to the human being.”
The president said that during Poland’s communist era, regimes ensured survival by indoctrinating the youngest generation.
“That was Bolshevism. It was the [indoctrination] of children,” he said. “Today, there are also attempts to push an ideology on us and our children, but different. It’s totally new, but it is also neo-Bolshevism.”
California
The ‘All Black Lives Matter’ march was organized by the Black Advisory Board
made up of Black LGBTQ+ leaders and organizations
Duda signed a declaration on helping families that included language on “protecting children from LGBT ideology” with a ban on “propagating LGBT ideology in public institutions.”
Many conservative politicians in Poland say they are not against gay men and lesbians as individuals but oppose the goals of a civil rights movement they claim is imported from abroad and threatens to sexualize young people
But gay and lesbian Poles and liberal Poles say government officials are adopting a language of dehumanization
They believe Duda and others are targeting LGBT people to curry favor with the powerful Roman Catholic Church in Poland — which faces allegations of covering up clerical abuse — and shore up support among conservative voters
Some analysts also say Duda and the governing Law and Justice party are making a bid for far-right voters who will mostly support the candidate of a smaller party, Confederation, in the election’s first round June 28 but whose votes would be up for grabs in a runoff.
World & Nation
Even before Polish President Andrzej Duda walks into the White House on Wednesday, he’ll have notched a political win.
In recent days, a string of prominent conservative politicians has spoken out about “LGBT ideology.” The deputy head of the governing party, Joachim Brudzinski, wrote Thursday on Twitter that “Poland without LGBT is most beautiful.” His tweet included an image of Jesus and eggs in a bird nest — a bird family “realizing God’s plan,” he said.
Asked about the tweet at a Friday rally, presidential challenger Trzaskowski, who belongs to the centrist and pro-European Union Civic Platform party, said, “If you use the words ‘Poland without someone’ — and it doesn’t matter who — that is dividing Poles, and we have had enough of dividing Poles.
“I think anyone who uses this kind of language will pay a political price,” Trzaskowski said.
Another conservative lawmaker got kicked off the air in the middle of a Friday interview with private broadcaster TVN for saying, “LGBT is not people, it’s an ideology.”
Duda said at the rally that he agreed with that idea.
“They are trying to convince us that they are people, but this is an ideology,” Duda said.
The election is scheduled for June 28, with a second round featuring the two top candidates two weeks later on July 12 if none of the contenders wins at least 50% outright. While there are now 10 candidates in the race, polls predict a runoff between Duda and Trzaskowski.

Workers begin to demolish a Soviet-era monument to the Red Army
Poland on Wednesday began demolishing a memorial to the Soviet Red Army soldiers
an unwanted reminder of the power Moscow once held over Poland whose presence became even more objectionable after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
It is part of a longer effort to remove hated communist symbols from the public space in Poland and across the region
was invaded and occupied by Germany and the Soviet Union at the start of World War II and then endured decades of Moscow-backed rule until 1989
has been working with local communities to remove dozens of similar Soviet-era memorials
when a decision was announced to remove them
The monument in Brzeg mark’s the 24th to be demolished
He said it was important to remove such memorials because of Russia’s war in Ukraine
but also because a Polish law in 2015 calls for them to removed
“It is impossible to keep such monuments in the public sphere,” he told The Associated Press
The work to dismantle the Brzeg monument is expected to last several days
sending military and humanitarian aid into the war-torn country
It has also become a place of exile for more Ukrainian refugees than any other single country

The company manufactures thermal management systems for electric city buses and coaches on 12,500 square meters
“The increasing demand for electric buses requires us to expand our capacities for bus air conditioning systems,” explains Jörg Steins
The Bus and Coach Business Unit has been producing in Poland for seven years

Where vehicle heaters for all drive types continue to be produced
Around 100 employees are now moving to the new building
In addition to the relocated production lines and the central spare parts warehouse
series production of a new thermal management system for electric city buses and coaches from leading international manufacturers is being built there
Up to 20,000 systems will roll off the production line each year
“With around 30 percent more capacity compared to the previous site
we are ideally positioned for current and future e-mobility orders,” emphasizes Jörg Steins
Eberspaecher plans to grow to 150 employees in Przylesie
“I believe that this cooperation with such reputable partners will promote the dynamic development of our community,” points out Tymoteusz Drebschok
The new building on the 7R Park Przylesie industrial estate is just two kilometers from the A4/E40 freeway junction
the main focus during construction was on environmental aspects,” explains Oliver Wels
Executive Vice President of the Bus and Coach Business Unit
The plant reduces operational CO₂ emissions by at least 50 percent and primary energy requirements by 70 percent compared to a building constructed in accordance with Polish building regulations
The photovoltaic system and a heating and cooling system based on heat pumps are the main contributors to this
the new site also houses production-related areas such as production planning

Establishing a new production base in Europe to target the European market next to the North American market following the completion of its Mexico plant in October last year
Set to begin operations in the second half of 2025
with an initial order of 1.03 million units from Hyundai and Kia for their European production
Aims for an annual production capacity of 7.5 million units and over 10 percent of the global market share by 2030

POSCO INTERNATIONAL plans to target major European EV manufacturers and build a production system for 1.2 million traction motor cores annually at the Poland plant alone by 2030
This new plant will be part of its global production cluster for traction motor cores
which includes locations in Pohang and Cheonan in Korea
By securing local production bases in key economic regions such as East Asia
the company has apparently eliminated the risk of tariff barriers due to increasing protectionism
Contrary to recent concerns about the EV craze
According to the European Automobile Industry Association (ACEA)
hybrid vehicle sales in Europe reached 3.41 million units in 2023
The European Union (EU) has announced a total ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035
The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) predicts that European EV sales will increase to 5.4 million units by 2025 and 10.6 million units by 2030
considering the EU’s carbon neutrality policy
the traction motor core is a key component of the drive control system in almost all types of eco-friendly vehicles
except conventional internal combustion engine vehicles
and its demand is expected to continue growing in the future
the company plans to strengthen its position as a global supplier of eco-friendly mobility parts by establishing an annual global production capacity of 7.5 million units by 2030
“It is significant that we have secured a production base in Europe
which is at the forefront of the eco-friendly automobile industry after Asia and North America,” said a POSCO INTERNATIONAL official
“We will further collaborate with major European automakers to become a leading eco-friendly mobility parts company in the world.”

A new law targeting the legacy of Poland’s Soviet-dominated past requires the removal of monuments that glorify communism
The legislation has reignited a long-simmering debate in Poland
and prompted threats of a harsh response from Russia
A monument in the center of Brzeg dedicated to “Polish-Soviet brotherhood.” The law
which builds on previous decommunization efforts
comes into force in late October and calls for more than 200 monuments that “symbolize or propagate” totalitarian regimes to be removed from Poland’s streets

A wheelchair-bound amputee today revealed how murdered Polish care worker Magda Pniewska changed his life.
Five years ago Roy Anderson was told he would never walk again but the compassion and perseverance of Miss Pniewska gave him the hope to live life to the full.
His tribute came as the dead woman's mother today condemned "lawless" Britain, saying the police are "too afraid" to tackle gangs.
Miss Pniewska was killed on Tuesday night in crossfire as two feuding drug gangs exchanged shots in John Williams Close, New Cross.
The 26-year-old was hit in the head as she made the short walk home to the flat she shared with her boyfriend, Radoslaw Lipka. She was taking a shortcut through a park behind Stunell House, a four-minute walk from the care home.
Many of the patients at the Bupa-run Manley Court Nursing Centre, in John Williams Close, are severely disabled or mentally ill.
Mr Anderson, 49, said: "She was the best person I ever met in the nursing home - a wonderful carer. There wasn't one minute of her time wasted when she worked here. She would go out of her way for anyone who needed her.
"I remember being told that I would lose both my legs. Magda became a friend. She would listen if I had problems and would be caring and offer solutions.
"Nothing got on top of her. If one method didn't work, she would try another. She would say: 'We can't do things this way, but let's try it another way', that's the sign of a truly caring person."
So highly-regarded was Miss Pniewska that after a year of working as a care assistant, she was promoted to activities co-ordinator.
Mr Anderson, who used to train disabled people for Hammersmith and Fulham social services, had his legs amputated after accidentally pushing a garden fork through his foot and suffering complications through diabetes. He said: "She gently made me realise how it was up to me to become mobile again."
Miss Pniewska was chatting to her sister, Elzbieta, on her mobile when she was shot. She died in hospital about an hour later.
Speaking from Brzeg in Poland, her mother, Barbara Pniewska, 52, a bank clerk, said: "No mother should have to see her daughter die like this.
"Why could the police not protect her? I do not understand why a country as rich as Britain cannot police its streets properly. It is like the police are afraid of tackling the gangs. They know there is violence, and they know who these gangs are.
"Yet they do nothing and now my daughter has paid with her life for their failure."
Magda's sister, Elzbieta, 34, said: "I heard what sounded like bangs and the phone seemed to go dead. It is tragic. Everyone here in my house is crying."
Ms Pniewska's father, Ryskard, 58, a welder, said he had been planning to visit her in Britain this week. He said: "I can't stop crying. We always thought London was wonderful, it was her dream. We were so glad she was there. I had no idea it was not safe."

Link copiedShareShare articlePolish authorities say 12 people have been killed and tens of thousands have had to leave their homes in severe flooding caused by torrential rain.
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk says the flooding is the worst Poland has ever experienced, with several parts of the country underwater.
Water levels are beginning to go down in the south of the country but rivers are now taking the floodwaters north.
The south-western Polish city of Wroclaw has been partially flooded as a dike on the Sleza river, a tributary to the Oder, broke and sent floodwaters into the Kozanow neighbourhood.
The floods sweeping across the country have caused damage estimated at more than 2.4 billion euros ($3.6 billion).
In the capital Warsaw, authorities appealed to residents in low-lying areas near the Vistula River to be ready to evacuate if necessary. The river has reached 7.8 metres, a level not seen in 60 years.
With the waters not expected to begin dropping before Tuesday, authorities are worried waterlogged dikes on the Vistula may not hold.
The Vistula winds in an s-shape across Poland for 1,050 kilometres from the mountainous south to the Baltic Sea in the north.
Prime minister Donald Tusk presented parliament on Friday with a report on the floods, saying their scale was "without precedent in the past 160 years".
"The situation in the River Vistula basin is much worse than in the last major floods of 1997," he said.
Mr Tusk's chief aide, Michal Boni, says if the cost of flood damage is found to have exceeded 2.1 billion euros, Poland can formally request help from a European Union crisis fund, which would unlock 100 million euros of EU money.
At Poland's request, the 27-nation EU formally kicked off an emergency operation on Wednesday.
Among the individual EU member states who have so far sent rescuers and equipment were France, Germany, the Baltic nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and Poland's neighbour the Czech Republic, which has also been hit by floods.
Mr Boni says 23,000 people have been evacuated from flood-hit regions, out of a total affected population of 100,000.
