With Lufthansa set to resume flights to Frankfurt later this month and charter traffic reaching record levels in 2024
Bydgoszcz Airport in Poland is accelerating efforts to expand its network through new scheduled and leisure routes
“The restoration of this connection is a source of great satisfaction for us and a testament to our airport’s expanding role in both regional and international air traffic,” a spokesperson for Bydgoszcz Airport told Routes at Routes Europe 2025
which begins April 27 and reconnects the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region with one of Europe’s key hubs
The German carrier’s return follows a strong year for the airport
where Bydgoszcz handled 88,662 passengers—up 47% year-on-year
New routes to Palma de Mallorca and Marsa Alam helped drive the increase
with the Egyptian destination becoming the airport’s first year-round leisure service
“We now have the most attractive route network in years—combining legacy carriers
and popular holiday destinations,” the spokesperson said
“Our top priority remains further network development
which is why we are working intensively to attract new connections and increase the availability of both scheduled and charter flights.”
The spokesperson said a major opportunity for the airport and region is the development of MRO activities
“We have established cooperation with key players in the aircraft maintenance sector and aim to transform Bydgoszcz into a European maintenance hub,” they said
“This initiative can bring significant benefits—from job creation to support for local businesses.”

a powerful Passion play performed on Palm Sunday is bringing new life to one of World War II’s darkest chapters
one of the first mass murders of the war took place
the “Valley of Death” in Bydgoszcz’s Fordon neighborhood
will host a Passion play reminding that through Christ new life comes from death and suffering
sparking the beginning of the bloodiest conflict in history
Poland’s Jewish and Roma populations were to be completely exterminated
while Slavic Poles were to be slaves for the German “master race,” with their elites killed off
Kay in his “Empire of Destruction: A History of Nazi Mass Killing,” approximately 100,000 educated Poles were killed in the early phase of the war
either through mass executions or in concentration camps
This operation and the massacre of at least 20,000 Polish psychiatric patients
people with disabilities and nursing home residents were the first two mass murders of World War II
(While the Jews were subjected to discrimination from the German occupiers from the moment of invasion
their genocide in death camps began in 1942.)
One of the most notorious sites of this murderous campaign was Bydgoszcz’s “Valley of Death,” where in October and November 1939
although some sources say there were up to 1,500 victims
where he implored the local church to commemorate the wartime sufferings of the city’s residents
The pontiff’s words inspired sculptor Jacek Kucaba to design Calvary in the “Valley of Death” titled “The Golgotha of the Twentieth Century”; the installation was completed in 2009
The first 13 stations consist of approximately 6-foot steel crosses
The final station is titled “The Door to Heaven” and includes a sculpture of the triumphant Christ emerging from a wall made of smaller crosses symbolizing the victims of 1939 in Bydgoszcz and a reference to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem
“The notion to organize a Passion play at the site of the massacre came out of the ‘Martyria’ student ministry in Bydgoszcz
but now we’re organizing this event for the 24th time,” Kevin Kołodziej
a student at the Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology and the coordinator of the Passion play
several people were engaged in its organization
while the audience consisted of about 200 people
350 actors and 100 people responsible for the technical aspect of the performance
15,000 spectators attended in 2024.”
Kołodziej himself was an actor in several editions of the play
The audience includes organized groups of pilgrims from other parts of Poland as well as Germany
Kołodziej explained that in 2001 Tomasz Schmidt
fascinated with historical reconstructions
had the “crazy idea” to hold a Passion play
the event focuses on a biblical theme as well as a reference to the present day or to history
In previous years, the Passion play has referenced, among others, St. Faustina‘s mystical visions and the centennial of the birth of St
the biblical reference was the parable of the prodigal son
which was simultaneously a commentary on the contemporary problem of broken families
The “Martyria” student ministry’s name refers to the many wartime Catholic martyrs of western Poland
none of the many priests killed in Bydgoszcz’s Valley of Death is an official candidate for canonization
at least four blessed martyrs with ties to Bydgoszcz — Bishop Michal Kozal
and the priests Antoni Świadek and Franciszek Dachtera — perished in the Dachau concentration camp
This year’s edition of the play focuses on Job and the quote “For a tree there is hope” (Job 14:7)
In an interview with Poland’s Catholic weekly Niedziela
responsible for student ministry in the Diocese of Bydgoszcz and the spiritual director of the Passion play
innocent man who experienced many misfortunes due to his fidelity to the Ten Commandments,” was to “provoke a personal response to the question of if we treat personal difficulties as an opportunity to awaken hope
and experiencing everyday life in accordance with God’s will.”
this year’s Passion play will reference the 1939 executions
the story of one family will be recreated,” Kołodziej says
“The father was brutally murdered in the Valley of Death
while his wife had to carry her cross and find meaning in her shattered life
there will be a procession of actors playing the Fordon victims in the Stations of the Cross; their execution will be recreated
and a recording of shots will be played in a tribute to their martyrdom.”

Many of Poland’s best will take on some of the world’s leading athletes when the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold continues with the Irena Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz on Thursday (20)
It is fitting that Natalia Kaczmarek is among the headliners of the meeting
which is named in tribute to Polish sprint great Szewinska who set a world record of 49.29 when winning her Olympic 400m title in Montreal in 1976
That legendary mark remained the Polish record until last week
when Kaczmarek improved it to 48.98 to win the European title in Rome
Fresh from that performance at the Stadio Olimpico
world silver medallist Kaczmarek will be looking to put on another show for home fans at the Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak Stadium
She has finished in the top two in each of her 400m races so far this season and in Bydgoszcz her competition includes her compatriots Justyna Swiety-Ersetic and Iga Baumgart-Witan
Romania’s Andrea Miklos and Great Britain’s Ama Pipi
The men’s hammer gets the field action under way on Thursday and all three medallists from the recent European Championships will clash again
Hungary’s Bence Halasz and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan renew their rivalry as part of a field that also features another Polish great – five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek – and Dutch record-holder Denzel Comenentia
When it comes to performances so far this season
Olympic fourth-place finisher Kokhan and world bronze medallist Halasz are separated by less than half a metre
threw 80.95m to win his third consecutive European title in Rome
while Kokhan threw 80.76m in Nairobi and Halasz 80.49m in Rome. Nowicki was the 2022 winner in Bydgoszcz
Italy’s world silver medallist Leonardo Fabbri faces Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell
Czechia’s Tomas Stanek and Great Britain’s Scott Lincoln
plus Poland’s Michal Haratyk and Konrad Bukowiecki
Fabbri sits second on this season’s top list with the national record of 22.95m he set in Savona last month
while Campbell has also surpassed 22 metres so far in 2024
The men’s pole vault will see home favourite Piotr Lisek
go up against Philippines' world silver medallist Ernest John Obiena and world indoor bronze medallist Emmanouil Karalis of Greece
Obiena cleared 5.93m indoors in February and has an outdoor best this season of 5.80m set when winning at the Continental Tour Gold meeting in Los Angeles
while Karalis soared 5.87m to secure his silver medal at the European Championships a week ago
He followed that with a win in Athens four days later with a clearance of 5.82m
Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu has happy memories of racing in Poland as she set her 1500m PB of 3:55.28 indoors in Torun in February
That came a month before she won the world indoor title in Glasgow and now she continues her outdoor campaign in Bydgoszcz.
She will line up alongside the Australian trio of Linden Hall
plus Great Britain’s Revee Walcott-Nolan
Sweden’s Andreas Kramer claimed a narrow 800m victory at the Continental Tour Gold meeting in Turku on Tuesday and he’ll want to continue his winning ways as he takes on a field featuring Algeria’s Mohamed Ali Gouaned

and Education Centre (JATEC) being set up in Poland to help the alliance strategically apply lessons directly from the battlefield as the war provoked by Russia in 2022 wages on is expected to be fully operational in the next year
In an interview on the sidelines of the Washington Summit on Thursday
a spokesperson for Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared new details with DefenseScoop about this in-the-works collaborative knowledge hub
which NATO leadership has been broadly hinting at launching in recent months
we call that place ‘NATO city’ because there is a big airfield and there are some NATO institutions there
And so this will be a center for analyzing war,” the spokesperson explained
The JATEC is envisioned to be staffed primarily by military officers from across the alliance
but I think that it will work in two directions
we have Ukrainians who have to adapt to NATO standards and using NATO weapons
I think that NATO nations can use all the Ukrainian knowledge from the three years of war
Russian digital technology and so on,” the spokesperson told DefenseScoop
“And so I think that the idea of this institution is fruitful and very useful — not only for Ukrainians
Since Ukraine first started combatting the Russian invasion
militaries across the globe have been tracking survival lessons and best practices to improve their capacity on the modern battlefield
the Polish spokesperson also spotlighted specific areas of study that may be prioritized within the JATEC
“I think it’s mostly about tactics
but some things do not work,” the senior official said
“It’s a technological war — when you look for example at tanks
which tried to protect themselves from drones
but in the contemporary era the nations’ militaries are considered close partners
They’re also parts of the Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade
which marks a longstanding trilateral agreement between the three countries that make up the Lublin Triangle
“We’ve cooperated with Ukraine for many
But in ’22 — in the first months of the war — many of the soldiers who were trained in Lublin and cooperated with Polish forces were high-ranking in the Ukrainian Army,” the spokesperson said
the new center might potentially be a key mechanism to train Ukrainian civilians to fight for volunteer military forces
“We have about 2 million Ukrainians in Poland — refugees — and some of them want to fight,” the Polish government spokesperson explained
Notably, among other pledges
the new Washington Summit Declaration issued by allies Wednesday formalizes the establishment of the JATEC and refers to the new entity as “an important pillar of practical cooperation
to identify and apply lessons from Russia’s war against Ukraine and increase Ukraine’s interoperability with NATO.”
And during a joint press conference on Thursday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also explicitly pointed to the new analytics and training center as an important element in the alliance’s overarching initiative to support the war-torn nation
you can’t even sometimes use the word ‘success.’ But success is your work and your comfort with your life
Success is when you don’t lose your family
that will be a real success for us,” Zelenskyy told reporters at the briefing
the allies also committed to following an “irreversible path” to NATO membership for Ukraine

Efficient stormwater management systems in military facilities are vital
improve functionality and protect important infrastructure and assets from changing weather conditions
But what are some of the key requirements for linear drainage systems installed in operational areas of military facilities
Here are some to bear in mind (equal order of priority):
HAURATON Poland has worked with Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A. for many years
providing drainage solutions for various development and renovation projects of military facilities
The company manages one of the largest aviation plants in Poland at Bydgoszcz Airport
and is part of an elite group of companies (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa) of high strategic importance through the provision of services and support to the Polish Armed Forces
The facility at Bydgoszcz Airport has 78 years of experience in operating
servicing and modernising military aircraft
including advanced fighter and transport aircraft
During 2022 a new high-tech military aircraft hangar was constructed by Betpol SA (Bydgoszcz) at the site
durable FASERFIX BIG BL linear drainage channel (100mm and 150mm widths)
Channels were installed across external pavement areas
and also within the hangar building itself
With a steel-reinforced ‘pre-cast’ concrete body
Another important reason for the use of FASERFIX BIG BL…this system has been extensively tested and approved by the ‘Air Force Institute of Technology’ (ITWL) in Warsaw
a leading research centre involved with military aviation technology
supervised by the Polish ‘Ministry of Defence’
Information regarding test results is available on request
HAURATON drainage products have been used on over 30 airport / airfield projects in Poland
Metrics details
The aim of this study was to assess changes in the components of physical fitness that are conducive to the health of young people surveyed between 2001 and 2020
Hypotheses were formulated about an increase in the thickness of skinfolds
the deterioration of the results of fitness tests and the lack of conditioning of the examined changes with socioeconomic factors
physiotherapy students at the Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz
Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) were examined for body height and mass
The results were obtained from 1161 female students and 464 male students
Similar trends were observed for most of the studied characteristics in people of both sexes
secular trends towards a decrease in the thickness of biceps skinfolds (R2 = 0.455
p = 0.002) and lower leg skinfolds (R2 = 0.314
secular trends towards an increase in the body mass (R2 = 0.41
a decrease in the thickness of skinfolds over the biceps (R2 = 0.477
p = 0.001) and decreased flexibility (R2 = 0.283
Male sex and the thickness of suprailiac skinfolds were frequent predictors of the
assessed motor abilities and socioeconomic factors did not significantly affect their maintenance
except for a few secular trend examples of the somatic features (male student’s age and calf skinfold
male and female student’s biceps skinfold) and flexibility in women
showed their stability and the lack of conditioning by social factors and by the fitness test
Attention to the appropriate level of the observed components is justified
especially in light of the identified trend that showed their deterioration
Further goals included the assessment of secular trends in physical fitness that support health among students
as well as to determine predictors for these trends
cross-sectional studies were carried out on physiotherapy students from the Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz
which has been part of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń since 2004
which was the original name of the university
was the first of the Polish medical academies to offer education in the field of physiotherapy
Bydgoszcz is a large provincial city located in the west-central part of Poland
with more than 350,000 population and with academic traditions
The research was carried out during classes; it was initially conducted in the third year of long-term master’s studies and later in the first and second years of bachelor’s studies
The change in the study model did not allow the research to be carried out in 2014
the research included male and female master’s students
the location of the subject “movement education and movement teaching methodology” in the study program determined the stage of the study at which the research was carried out and
which included measuring the static strength
With the exception of the last group of male and female students
whose research period coincided with the pandemic and lockdown
all surveyed students took part in physical education classes (60 h)
movement education with movement teaching methodology (110 h) and summer and winter camps (110 h)
The decision to present the material in two separate works was also influenced by its considerable volume
could make it illegible or require selective presentation
Hence the similarity in the description of the basic somatic features (height and body weight) and socioeconomic conditions of the studied groups
The majority of the surveyed male and female students were residents of large cities (65.97%)
a large proportion of whom were from Bydgoszcz (20.25%)
and almost all of them were graduates of general secondary schools (95.75%)
The parents of some surveyed students received secondary education (fathers
Inclusion in the study group was based on the membership in the observed student group
and personal informed consent of the participants
The most common reason for the exclusion from the study was absence from classes or an injury that prevented performance of motor tests
sets of results were obtained from 464 male and 1161 female students
constituting nearly 95% of the students involved in the research
The characteristics covered by the research were considered by taking into account basic socioeconomic characteristics
such as the size of the place of residence
the type of school completed and parents’ education
as well as the inclusion of a fitness exam in the recruitment procedure for studies
The research was carried out with the consent of the Bioethics Committee at the Collegium Medicum im
Ludwika Rydygiera of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Bydgoszcz (No
KB 44/2004-extended every 4 years until 2020)
All men and women were informed about the purpose of the study
and the possibility of withdrawing from the study without giving any reason
the students provided informed consent to participate in the study
All procedures contributing to this work followed the ethical standards of the relevant national and institutional human experimentation committees and the 1975 Declaration of Helsinki
The results of the measurements are presented in tables containing average values and standard deviations
The relationships of the changes in the average annual values of the examined characteristics between women and men were assessed with Pearson’s linear correlation coefficients
The values of the coefficients were interpreted as the strength of the linear relationship between the characteristics
it is the normalized covariance of two defined variables
Changes in the measured values over time were assessed using simple linear regression analysis to determine the regression coefficients so that the model could predict the value of the dependent variable
Analysis of the impact of features on fitness results was carried out using the multiple linear regression method
which is used to fit linear or linearized models between one dependent variable and more than one independent variable
The following characteristics were used as potential predictors: body height and mass
fitness exam in the recruitment procedure for studies
and father’s and mother’s level of education
Statistical analysis was performed at the Statistical Analysis Center of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń using the Python programming language (3.8.10) with the following libraries: statsmodels (0.13.1)
The descriptive statistics indicate that in all years of observation
women accounted for significantly larger shares of the sample
with slightly lower average ages and standard deviations
The men surveyed in 2020 were characterized by a greater average body mass than that in earlier years
Table 2 presents the results of the skinfold thickness measurements for the groups of male students, and Table 3 presents the results for the groups of female students
the examined age groups of men were characterized by lower average skinfold measurements and
with the exception of the skinfolds measured on the abdomen and on the suprailiac area
which confirms that the dispersion of individual measurements of somatic features in men was smaller than that in women
Table 4 presents the results of the fitness tests for the male students, and Table 5 presents the results for the female students
The statistical data presented in the tables show that
the surveyed age groups of men were characterized by higher average results of the fitness tests
and with the exception of the trunk strength
which indicate a greater dispersion of individual results of fitness tests in men than in women
were characterized by a lower average trunk strength than the student groups in earlier years
The relationships of the changes in the average annual values of the examined characteristics between women and men were assessed with Pearson’s linear correlation coefficients, and the results are presented in Table 6
With the exception of Pearson’s linear correlation coefficients calculated for the body mass
skinfold under the scapula and functional strength
indicating that the vast majority of changes in the characteristics under observation were similar between men and women
Graphical characterization of secular trends in age.
Graphical characterization of secular trends in body mass.
Graphical characterization of secular trends in the biceps skinfold.
Graphical characterization of secular trends in the thickness of calf skinfolds.
Graphical characterization of secular trends in body flexibility
the model is significant and indicates a decrease of 0.068 years in the average age of students
along with the progressive change of the surveyed age groups
the model is not significant and indicates that the values of the trait are maintained at similar levels
For the thickness of the skinfold at the front of the arm in men
the model is significant and shows a year-on-year decrease of 0.412 mm in the value of this feature
the model is also significant and indicates a year-on-year decrease of 0.37 mm in the value of this feature
For the remaining skinfold thicknesses of men and women
with the exception of that above the calf in men
the models are not significant and indicate that the values of these features remain at similar levels

Increasing the value of the suprailiac skinfold by 1 mm caused a decrease in the abdominal muscle strength of − 0.1154 points
and male sex increased the abdominal muscle strength by 3.5319 points
and the model explained 42.4% of the variability
Increasing the body mass by 1 kg caused a decrease in the functional strength of − 2.8054 points
and an increase in the thickness of the hip fold of 1 mm reduced the functional strength by − 3.1247 points
and the model explained 45.1% of the variability
Increasing the value of the abdominal skinfold variable by 1 mm caused a decrease in the strength of − 0.0491 points
and an increase in the thickness of the hip fold of 1 mm resulted in a decrease in the strength of − 0.0353 points
Male sex increased the strength score by 2.4319 points
body mass and the thickness of suprailiac skinfolds are frequent predictors of the examined motor characteristics that are conducive to health
as well as the inclusion of the fitness exam in the recruitment procedure for the university
did not significantly contribute to maintaining the level of the motor characteristics
the lack of similarity in the changes in the average annual values of the observed characteristics between women and men was negatively verified
and the differences in the functional strength trends are probably related to the moderate mass gain in women
with a relative stability of this characteristic in men
this statement is of relative value because it is based on the observations of the skinfold thickness and waist circumference and not on detailed measurements of body components
It is also possible that the deterioration of women’s flexibility
in addition to the effects of the pandemic
affected the unfavourable trunk strength results obtained in 2020
this assumption requires continued research taking into account the effects of the pandemic and the history of SARS-CoV-2 infection
With clearly different levels of static strength between the examined and compared groups
the information about the significantly lower strength of the dominant hand was not confirmed either
The vast majority of the people surveyed by us were right-handed
and in all age groups of both men and women
the grip strength of the right hand was slightly greater than that of the left hand
we believe that differences in the procedures of the performed tests and the significantly larger number of groups examined in this study than in the other studies contributed to the observed difference
It was not possible to unambiguously determine the predictors of the observed characteristics
body mass and the thickness of suprailiac skinfolds were found to be predictors of several examined motor characteristics
with no influence of sociometric determinants
including the inclusion of the fitness exam in the university recruitment procedure
were within the scope of the present study
our results are somewhat surprising and allow us to claim that the too low criteria of the fitness exam were not sufficiently selective for physically fit people
while intellectual selection for studies was the decisive factor and was thus somewhat discriminatory against candidates from lower social class levels
there was little social diversity among the studied students
there were no sociometric features among the predictors of physical fitness tests supporting health
these components are of particular value because they allow the use of various types of physical activity in the broadly understood therapeutic process
the continuation of research allowing for recognition of the area of physical activity and motor skills as well as students’ readiness to later use them in their professional work seems fully justified
Issues worth considering in subsequent studies also include the further effects of the pandemic and social changes caused by warfare in Europe
The small number of men in the groups could also have influenced the observed secular trend of the reducing age of the students
we believe that the advantage of this work is the relatively long duration of research carried out with a recognized physical fitness test by one research team
as well as the ability to obtain complete results from a large percentage of students under observation
It was also important to undertake and continue a study
starting from the first recruitment of physiotherapy students at the Polish Medical Academy
we believe that the obtained results are relatively reliable and may be helpful for updating physical education programs in physiotherapy studies and for recruiting future candidates
The results may also provide valuable information material for people intending to study physiotherapy
The results of many years of observation of trends in secular components of physical fitness supporting the health of people studying physiotherapy at the Medical University of Bydgoszcz showed a trace of a negative tendency in changes in all examined motor characteristics
The exceptions were several identified somatic features and the deterioration of flexibility in women
attention to the appropriate level of the observed features seems to be justified
and the results of the present research may be helpful in updating physical education programs in physiotherapy studies or in selection of candidates for such studies based on their motor skills
It also seems advisable to continue the research topic
which are useful both in undertaking targeted physical activity and in creating kinesiotherapy exercises conducted with patients

Natalia Kaczmarek and Andreas Kramer provided the standout performances of the Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz
as meeting records took a tumble at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting on Thursday (20)
Fabbri sent his shot out to 22.38m to win by more than a metre while fellow European champion Kaczmarek dominated the 400m in 49.86
held off a strong challenge from Australia’s Linden Hall to win the 1500m in 3:58.59
and Andreas Kramer broke the Swedish record to win the men’s 800m in 1:44.08
There was also a gripping pole vault competition
while five-time world hammer champion Pawel Fajdek achieved his first victory of the season
Fabbri led throughout and improved as the competition progressed
The world silver medallist from Italy opened with 21.54m
which would have ultimately been sufficient to win
in round five before ending his series with 22.28m
Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell was a distant second with 21.22m
Freweyni Hailu in the 1500m in Bydgoszcz (© Adam Nurkiewicz)
Hailu produced a controlled run to take the women’s 1500m
The Ethiopian stayed close to the pacemaker through the early laps
then maintained the tempo on the final lap
Hall was close behind Hailu and at one point moved on to her shoulder
but the world road mile silver medallist kicked on to win in 3:58.69 with Hall taking second in 3:58.96
The first nine athletes finished inside the previous meeting record of 4:03.86
There was a similar flurry of PBs in the men’s 800m
Algeria’s Mohamed Ali Gouaned took up the running and held the lead for a fair stretch before fatigue set in down the home straight
then came through to take the win in 1:44.08
breaking a meeting record that had stood for 13 years
Gouaned was rewarded with a PB of 1:44.37 in second place with Morocco’s Abdellatif El-Guesse finishing third in 1:44.62
set a senior national record of 1:44.82 in fourth
Andreas Kramer wins the 800m in Bydgoszcz (© Adam Nurkiewicz)
Ten days after winning the European title in 48.98
breaking the long-standing Polish record that had been set by Irena Szewinska
Kaczmarek won the 400m in Bydgoszcz at a meeting held in Szewinska’s honour
The world silver medallist set out strongly
but had 2019 world champion Salwa Eid Naser for company on the final bend
Kaczmarek managed to pull away down the home straight
the ninth sub-50-second clocking of her career and a 1.44-second improvement on the meeting record
Naser was second in a season’s best of 50.32 and Romania’s Andrea Miklos was third in 50.99
While three meeting records were broken by comfortable margins
another was equalled as New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs won the 100m convincingly in 11.17 (0.4m/s)
World silver medallist Ernest Obiena won an enthralling pole vault contest from Greece's Emmanaouil Karalis
The Asian record-holder was the early leader
Karalis and Poland's Piotr Lisek were the only other vaulters to go clear at 5.75m
Karalis then got over 5.82m on his first try to take the lead
with Lisek exiting the contest and Obiena going clear on his second attempt
Obiena regained the lead with a first-time clearance at 5.87m
The vaulter from the Philippines then got over 5.97m
then both men ended with three unsuccessful attempts at 6.02m
Five-time world hammer champion Pawel Fajdek hit his best form of the year so far to gain revenge on the three men who made the podium at the recent European Championships
The Pole’s opening throw of 79.43m added almost two metres to his season’s best and stood up as the best mark of the competition
Olympic and European Wojciech Nowicki came closest to Fajdek’s lead
throwing 77.91m in round five to overtake European bronze medallist Mykhaylo Kokhan (77.84m)
Matheus Lima continued his breakthrough in the 400m hurdles
had broken 49 seconds just once prior to today
but he took another chunk off his PB to win against a quality field
Lima had a marginal lead as he entered the home straight but then pulled away from his opponents to cross the line in 48.31
Fast-finishing Tom Barr was second in a season’s best of 48.79
Irish record-holder was a similarly convincing winner of the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.74
Slovakia’s Viktoria Forster and Poland’s Marika Majewska were tied in second with 12.96
the international airport in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz adopted a prototype of the AN-178-100P transport aircraft
This statement was released by airport's press service
It is noted that the airport in Bydgoszcz had previously accepted another Antonov aircraft for storage
but there are no details about this episode
There are also no details on where and under what conditions the AN-178-100P was stored
we would like to emphasize that it is not disclosed what functions this aircraft can perform on the territory of Poland
It is quite possible that it was only a matter of preserving this important sample of Ukrainian-designed and manufactured aircraft
At the photo we can see that this transport aircraft was painted with the words "Volia" (can be translated as "will" or "freedom") and "Be brave like Hostomel."
The aforementioned message from the Bydgoszcz International Airport is important because it is essentially the first news about the Ukrainian AN-178 (specifically about the flight model) during the entire period of russia's full-scale war against Ukraine
Against this background, the assumptions made by the authors of the Polish ZBiAM portal in their respective publication look interesting
this aircraft could have been parked at the Sviatoshyn Airfield
which is located 11 km northwest of city center of Kyiv
This fact allowed it to avoid damage caused by the actions of russian troops who landed in Gostomel
The authors of this resource also believe that orders for the AN-178 from various customers amounted to as many as 30 units
the Polish authors simply wanted to emphasize the significance of the fact that the AN-178-100P was preserved and transported directly to Poland

Bydgoszcz is currently the largest construction site in the region and the biggest beneficiary of funds managed by the regional self-government – both from the budget and EU sources
Marshal’s Office investments alone in the city on the Brda River are set to reach 1.5 billion PLN
and the Bydgoszcz Integrated Territorial Investment (ZIT) budget
“Our region’s largest cities are growth and development hubs – cultural
and medical centers – which we support with funds appropriate to their roles
We have four regional hospitals here and also the most important cultural institutions – Opera Nova and the Pomeranian Philharmonic
and we’re doing it well,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki
The Integrated Territorial Investments Association of the Bydgoszcz Functional Area (ZIT of the Bydgoszcz Metropolis
ZIT BydOF) includes Bydgoszcz and 19 counties and municipalities in the central-western part of the region
European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze (FEdKP)
and based on an agreement signed two years ago
the regional self-government entrusted the Bydgoszcz Metropolis with the management of 104 million euro
These funds are managed by the municipal government of Bydgoszcz
to which the regional self-government has delegated essentially all authority related to managing the funds
this means that ZIT BydOF has independently determined its investment priorities and is now implementing them by launching project financing
Investment priorities include the purchase of low-emission public transport vehicles and improvements to the local public transportation system
FEdKP halfway point: 250 million euro in agreements
But ZIT funds are not the only ones in play—Bydgoszcz-based entities are also applying for FEdKP funds under general rules
At the halfway point of the program’s implementation
we have signed 47 financing agreements with beneficiaries (both through the intermediary and managing institutions
the regional government) totaling 250 million PLN
which corresponds to the launch of projects worth 350 million PLN
These include initiatives by the city government or its agencies
the fourth stage of the Rother Mills adaptation
conversion of a building for a youth center for those on the autism spectrum
and initiatives to improve vocational education
and private entities are also actively pursuing funding
Their projects include expanding care service networks and initiatives for social inclusion and the social economy
Among the most significant and anticipated urban investments are those carried out by the regional self-government through its institutions
Chief among them are the ongoing expansion of Opera Nova and the advanced preparatory works for the expansion of the Pomeranian Philharmonic
The fourth ring of the opera complex—a four-story wing with 6,000 square meters of usable space and a volume of 40,000 cubic meters—will feature a chamber opera hall (with an orchestra pit for 70 musicians and seating for 500)
and a viewing terrace overlooking the Brda River
A two-level underground car park will offer 200 parking spaces
The investment is valued at 170 million PLN
The long-awaited and ambitious expansion of the Pomeranian Philharmonic is now the region’s most important cultural investment
Following initial difficulties in securing government funding
we decided at the end of last year to proceed with this 300 million PLN project using regional funds
The Philharmonic is an institution of such standing that it justifies every cent invested in it
this year we secured partial government support (50 million PLN) through the FENiKS program
Rounding out the list of regional cultural investments in Bydgoszcz is the bold modernization and expansion of the Regional and Municipal Public Library
Plans include conservation and adaptation works on historic buildings
New features will include a year-round cultural event space
It’s also worth noting that the regional self-government is supporting prestigious Bydgoszcz cultural events—namely
the Bydgoszcz Music Festival and Bydgoszcz Opera Festival—with a total of 1.6 million this year PLN
We have earmarked 150 million PLN in the regional budget for the expansion and modernization of the main building complex of the Regional Oncology Center
Most of the funding is expected from the Ministry of Health
After the cancellation of the initial funding call
during which the center—one of the country’s top oncology hospitals—was awarded 300 million PLN
the hospital is reapplying in a new competition
The regional assembly has issued an official appeal urging the health minister to allocate the funds
The estimated cost of the investment exceeds half a billion PLN
Other healthcare projects include the construction of a new wing for organ diagnostics at the Regional Children’s Hospital
a Mental Health Center at the Bydgoszcz Mental Health Clinic
and equipment purchases for the Pulmonology Center and the Infectious Diseases Hospital
Regional budget funds are co-financing the construction of a new training hall in the Zawisza sports complex at 163 Gdańska Street
This 10,000 cubic meter facility—crucial for hosting the Kujawy-Pomorze 2026 Indoor Athletics World Championships—will include two levels
The underground level will house a modern shooting range with 50-
while the ground floor will feature a six-lane
200-meter indoor track with seating for 300 spectators
Construction is scheduled for completion next year

Hammer head-to-heads will again demand the spotlight
while Erriyon Knighton will look to make another statement in the sprints when the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series moves on to the Irena Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz
Four of the top seven women on the world all-time list clash in the women’s hammer
as home star Anita Wlodarczyk – the world record-holder and seven-time global gold medallist – continues her comeback
Forced to miss much of the 2022 season due to the injury she sustained during an altercation with a criminal last year
Wlodarczyk made her return at the Continental Tour Gold event in Nairobi last month
finishing third in a competition won by world bronze medallist Janee' Kassanavoid of the US
Competing two days before the Bydgoszcz meeting
Wlodarczyk and Kassanavoid met again at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Chorzow and on that ocassion they both finished behind Canada’s world silver medallist Camryn Rogers.
There have been some significant revisions to the world all-time list already this season and both USA’s Brooke Andersen and Rogers – respectively third and fifth on the list that is topped by Wlodarczyk’s world record of 82.98m from 2016 – will be aiming to maintain their strong seasons
World champion Andersen became the third athlete in history to surpass 80 metres in the event last month
while world silver medallist Rogers improved her own national record to 78.62m in Los Angeles to win ahead of Anderson just over a week ago
It is the first time that the quartet of Wlodarczyk
Rogers and Kassanavoid have all clashed in the same competition
Kassanavoid recorded the 78.00m that puts her seventh all time in May 2022 and she threw 76.60m to finish runner-up to Andersen in Tucson two weeks ago
The field also features USA’s Annette Echikunwoke and Romania’s European champion Bianca Ghelber
plus Poland’s Olympic bronze medallist Malwina Kopron and European silver medallist Ewa Rozanska
Rivalries are also renewed in the men’s event
where Rudy Winkler of the US and Wojciech Nowicki of Poland – the two athletes to have surpassed 80 metres so far this season – compete again in a field also boasting Poland’s five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek and Hungary’s 2019 world bronze medallist Bence Halasz
while Olympic champion Nowicki recorded 80.00m to beat Winkler in Chorzow a couple of days out from their rematch in Bydgoszcz
and has the chance to build on the 76.42m season’s best he set at the end of May
We are getting ready for the World Championships in Budapest," said Nowicki
I am the European leader and the meeting in Bydgoszcz has a field that an Olympic final would not be ashamed of
This is certainly extra motivation for me to throw even farther."
Nowicki won ahead of Fajdek at last year’s Irena Szewinska Memorial and another returning champion is New Zealand’s Tom Walsh in the men’s shot put
The 2017 world champion beat USA’s two-time world gold medallist Joe Kovacs by just four centimetres in Bydgoszcz last year and they are both back
their head-to-head record now 31-27 in Kovacs’ favour but with Walsh getting the upper hand in their past two clashes in recent days
It was Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri who claimed a narrow win in Florence and he also competes on Tuesday
as do Poland’s Michal Haratyk and USA’s world bronze medallist Josh Awotunde
Competition is high in the men’s pole vault
again goes up against Chris Nilsen and Sam Kendricks
two days after he beat his US rivals in Chorzow
They will also have to see off the challenge of Philippines’ Ernest John Obiena
"Chris and I are itching to jump really high," said two-time world champion Kendricks
who saw his North American record broken by KC Lightfoot on Friday after the 23-year-old cleared 6.07m to improve his compatriot's previous mark by a centimetre
"Early season meets you go out there so you can knock the rust off and once you get a few meets into the season
that's when you expect to be able to jump high."
The men’s high jump features Ukraine’s world bronze medallist Andrii Protsenko against his compatriot Bohdan Bondarenko
USA’s world bronze medallist Knighton will be seeking another strong run after winning his 200m season opener in 19.89 in Florence on Friday
That is now the fourth-fastest 200m of the season following the world lead of 19.67 set by world champion Noah Lyles in Kingston on Saturday and 19-year-old Knighton has the opportunity to make his mark again as he races against athletes including Dominican Republic’s world fifth-place finisher Alexander Ogando

the women’s 100m features USA’s world and Olympic relay gold medallist Morolake Akinosun
who ran 10.95 in April and won the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix in 10.97 at the end of May
She will be looking to dip under 11 seconds again after her 11.20 for fourth place in Florence
Britain’s Imani Lansiquot was one place ahead of Akinosun in that Diamond League meeting and they race each other again
joined by USA’s Kayla White and Germany’s Lisa Mayer
where her rivals include her compatriot Daryll Neita as well as USA’s Anavia Battle and Cambrea Sturgis

she travels to Bydgoszcz where the programme features heats before the final
The NACAC champion clocked 12.42 in Chorzow and was declared joint winner with Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn after they ran the same time

Germany’s Kai Kazmirek and Austria’s Sarah Lagger came through in the final stages of the decathlon and heptathlon respectively to win at the Wieslawa Czapiewski Memorial – a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting – in Bydgoszcz on Sunday (23)
Finley Gaio led for the first eight disciplines in the decathlon
while Britain’s Jade O’Dowda dominated the first day of the heptathlon
O’Dowda was a non-starter on day two
while Gaio was overtaken by four opponents in the final two decathlon disciplines
Gaio was the only man to break 11 seconds in the 100m
doing so comfortably with 10.68 to take an immediate lead
giving him a comfortable 181-point lead after just two events from Czechia’s Adam Helcelet and defending champion Ondrej Kopecky
The margins closed up slightly after the shot put
as Gaio’s 13.89m ranked him ninth in that discipline

while Helcelet got over 1.97m to creep a bit closer in the standings
Lithuania’s Edgaras Benkunskas produced the best leap of the day
his 2.03m clearance moving him into third place overall
A season’s best of 47.80 – easily the fastest of the day in the 400m – gave Gaio an extra points boost to close out the first day with an overall score of 4280 – just 19 points shy of his day-one score from his recent 8022 PB in Gotzis
Benkunskas (49.73) and Tim Nowak (49.78) all finishing inside 50 seconds
Helcelet held on to second place overall (4081) with Kazmirek close behind (4067) and Benkunskas fourth (4025)
Gaio – the fifth-place finisher in the 110m hurdles at last year’s European Championships – extended his lead in the first discipline of day two

one of the strongest throwers of the field
Kazmirek threw 42.92m and Gaio managed 37.24m
The gap between Gaio and Kazmirek narrowed again after the pole vault
with Kazmirek clearing 5.00m – 30 centimetres higher than Gaio’s best
Gaio finally surrendered the lead after the javelin
A season’s best of 66.19m from Helcelet propelled the Czech decathlete into the lead with one event to go
but Kazmirek – who threw 60.92m – was just 41 points behind
Wiesiolek was first to cross the line in the 1500m (4:35.44) with Kazmirek following a few seconds later in 4:39.34

while Helcelet took second place with 8034
Benkunskas was third (7947) and Gaio fourth (7935)
Headwinds hampered performances in the opening event of the heptathlon on Saturday with Hungary’s Rita Nemes being the only athlete to break 14 seconds (13.99)
O’Dowda clocked 14.02 to finish close behind with home favourite Adrianna Sulek
O’Dowda then had the competition of her life in the high jump
The Commonwealth bronze medallist went into it with a season’s best of 1.77m and a PB of 1.80m
but she went over both of those heights on her first try
eventually retiring after one attempt at 1.89m
Sulek was second best in the high jump with 1.80m
while Lagger cleared a season’s best of 1.74m
Germany’s Vanessa Grimm moved up the leaderboard after the shot put

was down in seventh (3480) after recording the slowest time in the 200m (25.63)
But the 2016 world U20 champion’s fortunes started to change on the second day
Nemes started the second day in the same way she’d started the first – with a winning performance
The Hungarian leaped a PB of 6.30m in the long jump
Lagger managed 6.09m and Sulek jumped 6.04m
With O’Dowda withdrawing from the competition
it meant Grimm moved into the overall lead from Loban and Sulek
Lagger then produced the best mark of the day in the javelin
whose 43.29m javelin throw helped move her into the lead
Nemes rounded out the weekend with victory in the 800m (2:11.47)
and finished comfortably ahead of Loban (2:18.41)

on Tuesday (1 June) setting a new world record in the men's long jump T64 with impressive 8.62m
The German blade jumper added 14 centimetres on to his previous record
also set at the European Championships three years ago in Berlin
It was his eighth European Championships gold medal and fifth in the long jump
“This season was really well for me already
I had two competitions and in the first one
I was just one centimetre shy of the old world record
I am consistent at the moment and I need to stay healthy to keep the success coming,” the three-time Paralympic champion added
Dimitri Pavade from France took the silver medal with 6.98m

His next challenge will be the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games in August
where Rehm will be defending the world jump title from Rio 2016 and London 2012
“It’s my main competition this year and I will try to reach my peak there
It is getting harder because I put my limit higher and higher
I’m in good shape and I hope I can jump some distances as I did in Bydgoszcz,” he added
28-year-old Columba Blango from Great Britain was another shining star in the afternoon session at the Euros in Bydgoszcz

- The upcoming academic year will be a year of three important anniversaries
- We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz and the 20th anniversary of its merger with the NCU and the establishment of the Collegium Medicum
as well as the 80th anniversary of our University
the new rectoral authorities of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń met with media representatives
first presented the assembled journalists with his team of appointed vice-rectors: dr
Vice-Rector for Promotion and Cooperation with the Social and Business Environment
Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Management
Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education
The main topic of the meeting was the planned jubilee celebrations at our University
we will celebrate three important dates in the history of our university: The 20th anniversary of the merger with the Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz and the establishment of the Collegium Medicum within the structures of the NCU
the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz
and the 80th anniversary of the University itself
21st July 1984 - Act on the Establishment of the Ludwik Rydygier Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz on the basis of the Branch Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy of Gdańsk
24th November 2004 – merger of the NCU and the Medical University of Bydgoszcz
24th August 1945 – Decree of the Council of Ministers (approved on 11th September by the National Council) on the Establishment of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń
The university was initially made up of two faculties: the humanities (with a fine arts section) and the mathematical-natural sciences
The rector and de facto organiser of the university was then Professor Ludwik Kolankowski
5th January 1946 – formal inauguration of the first academic year at the NCU in the Collegium Maius
The inaugural lectures were given by historian Professor Kazimierz Hartleb and astronomer Professor Władysław Dziewulski
A total of 1605 students received their student cards
- Every such important anniversary is an opportunity to create a coherent visual identity
This was the case with the celebration of other round anniversaries
including the NCU's 60th and 70th anniversaries
- So a call for proposals was organised: we wanted the design to reflect these three important anniversaries and at the same time be integrally linked to our logo
this will not be an internal celebration aimed exclusively at the academic community
but an opportunity to show the university as modern and open to the world and to strengthen cooperation with the city
There will also be events of a more scholarly nature
there are several important dates during which the jubilee celebrations will accumulate
The first is the forthcoming inauguration of the new academic year
when the anniversary celebrations will take place at the Pomeranian Philharmonic Hall in Bydgoszcz
A formal meeting of the Rector's Council and the Senate
choir performances and the presentation of the Laurus Aesculapii awards are scheduled to take place in the Philharmonic Hall
– Our colleagues from Bydgoszcz pointed out to us that in Toruń we have the Convallaria Copernicana
a distinction awarded for outstanding scientific contribution or special merits for the development of the university
They suggested that the Bydgoszcz part of the university lacked a similar distinction,' says Prof Joanna Kucharzewska
- We took this request into consideration and from this year the Laurus Aesculapii will be awarded for merits for the development of the Collegium Medicum
the university's patron and which will also be celebrated in the spirit of jubilee celebrations
One of the planned events is an exhibition by Jacek Yerka at the Academic Centre for Culture and Art 'Od Nowa'.
The NCU authorities want a lasting trace to remain of the year of anniversaries
One of these is known to be murals: one in Toruń on a high-rise building in Gagarina Street and another in Bydgoszcz on a building in Karłowicza Street
The projects were selected in a competition won by the artist Andrzej Poprostu
