Poland has conducted a state funeral for over 700 mostly unidentified victims of mass executions carried out by the German occupiers during World War Two in an area that became known as the “Valley of Death”
researchers from the state Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) found over a tonne of human bones buried there
on the outskirts of the town of Chojnice in northern Poland
They have now been buried in 188 coffins at a state funeral in Chojnice attended by local and national officials
including a representative of President Andrzej Duda

I convey my respect to the IPN and all people of goodwill involved in the effort to discover the truth and [ensure] a dignified burial,” said Dariusz Waldemar Dudek
“Let us be sure that as long as we live
the victims’ memory will not perish.”
In a letter from defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz
the minister described Chojnice as “one of the symbols of the unimaginable tragedy and brutality that our homeland experienced at that time”
especially in the face of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine
Because if we do not draw conclusions from history
this evil may repeat itself again,” he added
Kosiniak-Kamysz also announced plans to build a monument dedicated to those who were killed in the “Valley of Death”
It is believed that up to 2,000 people may have been executed there
including during the “Intelligenzaktion Pommern”
a German operation to eradicate the Polish intelligentsia in the area
“These death pits were also supposed to be pits of amnesia,” said Karol Nawrocki
who thanked prosecutors from his organisation for continuing their pursuit of justice for such victims
“They died of hatred – of German hatred of Polishness cultivated for two centuries.”
the IPN identified the location of the mass executions
after which the remains were found during archaeological work undertaken between 2021 and 2024
Shell casings and bullets used by German military and police units were also unearthed
Many of the victims were killed in the autumn of 1939, shortly after Germany’s invasion of Poland, when the occupiers sought to eradicate highly educated members of society. Others were executed in 1945, during the final stages of the war. Some victims were also mentally ill people

The IPN has so far managed to identify 120 of the victims. One of them was Irena Szydłowska, a member of the Home Army
Poland’s main underground resistance force

The opening of the exhibition entitled "Archeologia zbrodni – niemieckie zbrodnie w chojnickiej Dolinie Śmierci" [Archaeology of Crime – German Crimes in the Death Valley in Chojnice] will be held on 3 April 2025 (Thursday) at 12:00 p.m
This unique exhibition will present the results of field work
during which scientists from the Institute of Archaeology
and prosecutors from the Investigative Division of the Institute of National Remembrance in Gdańsk found the remains of approximately 700 Poles murdered near Chojnice in the autumn of 1939 and at the end of January 1945
The Pomeranian Crime of 1939 is a term that refers to the mass crimes committed in Gdańsk Pomerania in the first months of World War II
One of the approximately 400 execution sites
The mentally ill who resided in the so-called National Social Welfare Institutions in Chojnice constituted the second group of people murdered near Chojnice
All the residents – at least 218 people were murdered between 20 and 23 October 1939
15 representatives of the local Jewish community were also murdered
Entire families were murdered at that time – including children
A column of several hundred Polish prisoners was brought to Chojnice at the end of January 1945
They were all murdered and their bodies were then burned to cover up the traces of the crime
of whom families and loved ones recognized 53 victims
The Pomeranian Crime was a planned extermination campaign on the Polish civilian population carried out by the Germans in the pre-war Pomeranian Voivodeship in over 400 towns
Based on exhumation documentation and name lists
approximately 16,000 victims were identified
from 20 to even 40,000 people were murdered
where at least 10,000 people died is the largest place of execution
The full number of victims is unknown because the Germans destroyed the documentation and burned the bodies
Dr Dawid Kobiałka (photo: Mateusz Kowalski
The exhibition will feature 60 photos documenting 5 years of investigation conducted in the Death Valley, as reported by Dr Dawid Kobiałka from the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Lodz
We should remember that there is no such thing as eternal oblivion and a perfect crime
This is demonstrated by the activities of the Institute of National Remembrance
the prosecutor's office and the archaeological research that was conducted in the Death Valley
The remains of approximately 700 victims of German crimes from World War II were found on the northern outskirts of Chojnice
The discovery was made during exhumation work conducted in the years 2021-2024 by the Branch Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Gdańsk

The German executioners did everything they could to wipe out the traces of their crimes in the Valley of Death at Chojnice
we have unearthed the remains of the victims from unmarked pits and are now giving them a respectful burial

That sparse information was enough to establish the owner’s identity

She was only 25 years old and had a son who was less than five years old
Szydłowska is one of the many Polish victims whose bodies were discovered in the Igielskie Fields on the northern outskirts of Chojnice – a place now known as the Valley of Death
Twice the Germans massacred Poles here: in the bloody autumn of 1939 and again at the end of the occupation
.The nature of the war unleashed by Germany on 1 September 1939 was criminal from the start
The authorities in Berlin intended to destroy not only the Polish State but also the conquered nation
[…] We must act with the utmost severity […] This war is a war of annihilation,’ Führer Adolf Hitler ordered in a speech to his supreme military commanders on 22 August 1939
head of the Security Service and the Security Police
issued a similar order in early September: ‘People are to be shot or hanged immediately
the clergy and the Jews must be liquidated.’
these instructions were implemented in Pomerania with particular zeal

The Selbstschutz and other German formations targeted the Polish elite
Jews and patients of psychiatric hospitals
the Pomeranian Crime of 1939 – as the mass extermination is now known – resulted in at least 14,000 to 16,000 deaths
with about 500 in the Chojnice district alone
The real number of victims is undoubtedly higher
The German offenders made sure that no evidence of their crimes remained by destroying records and burning the bodies of the murdered
when the Valley of Death in Chojnice was once again drowned in blood
The Germans executed prisoners who were being driven west in an evacuation column
mostly people arrested at the turn of 1944-1945 in Bydgoszcz

the authorities in Berlin speak of moral responsibility for the past
they avoid the question of financial compensation for the damage and injustice done to Poland
instead of providing multi-billion reparations
they were only willing to offer around 200 million euros to the surviving ‘victims of National Socialism.’ These accounts fail to include people like Irena Szydłowska’s granddaughters
So is the fact that the current government in Warsaw wants to simply give up on reparations
the Institute of National Remembrance remains and continues to fulfil its statutory tasks
IPN prosecutors have found several mass graves in Valley of Death in Chojnice
with the remains of around 700 Polish citizens murdered by the Germans

85 years after the outbreak of the Second World War
it is finally time to give our compatriots a dignified burial
a state funeral for the victims of German crimes will take place in Chojnice

Death Valley in Chojnice is the site of mass crimes committed by the Germans during the Second World War
together with a team of experts supervised by dr Dawid Kobiałka
has been carrying out archaeological and investigative works in order to find mass graves of the victims and to clarify the circumstances of the crimes
this has led to the discovery of mass graves of several hundred people and the securing of almost 5,000 pieces of material evidence of the crimes committed
The latest findings are the result of the work carried out as part of an international and interdisciplinary team of experts supervised by dr Dawid Kobiałka
who is implementing “The Archaeology of the Pomeranian Crime of 1939” scientific project financed by the National Science Centre
the Prosecutor and the team of experts undertook comprehensive procedural activities aimed at finding all victims of mass murders committed in this area by functionaries of German formations in the autumn of 1939
This year’s activities were aimed at revealing and examining military trenches dug by the Polish Army in the summer of 1939
from approximately 20 October to the end of November 1939
were used by the Germans to carry out mass executions on the local population
According to archival materials several hundred Poles had lost their lives within a month
They were representatives of the local intelligentsia: the clergy
the fields where the executions took place were called Death Valley
a section of the military trenches was also used to hide the bodies of at least 218 people with psychiatric disabilities from the Social Welfare Institution in Chojnice
Field research was supported by desk-based research
geophysical prospections and metal detector surveys
The excavations covered an area of several square kilometres
ranging from several to several dozen meters long
up to two meters deep and several meters wide
Thanks to the modern archaeological research methodology used
The first of them is an almost 100-meter long section of trenches in which – according to the discovered artefacts – the bodies of at least several dozen representatives of the local intelligentsia were hidden
Poles were murdered with handguns – a large collection of shell casings and bullets from German short-calibre 7.65x17 mm Browning and 9 mm Parabellum firearms were found in the mass grave and its vicinity
One Mauser rifle bullet was also found in the death pit
The second mass grave revealed in 2024 is the place where the bodies of murdered patients from the Social Welfare Institution were hidden
Some of the witnesses testifying after the war about mass crimes committed in Chojnice and its vicinity claimed that in the autumn of 1939
the Germans had begun to transport people with psychiatric disabilities of the Social Welfare Institution to nearby fields
An estimated total of 218-249 people were killed
the bodies were hidden in the trenches and then buried in order to cover up the traces of the crime
The crimes were researched by historians as well
For example Tadeusz Kut’s work “The Land of Bydgoszcz in the Shadow of the Swastika” includes the information on the course of execution of patients of the Institution in Chojnice
which was a branch of the psychiatric hospital in Kocborowo
the Germans transported 219 patients of the hospital by car to a place called “The Valley”
“Dantean scenes” were said to have taken place there
“several hundred other people from Chojnice and the surrounding area
as well as a group of thirty Polish officers
They were killed with shots to the back of the head
and then dragged with ropes around their necks to the trenches
which the German Nazi soldiers did not cover at all
They limited themselves only to erecting a plaque at the execution site with […] an inscription that read: Hier ruhen arbeitsscheue Wesen (Here lie people afraid of work)”
Just before the execution he was sent to town to buy goods (later he was said to have worked as a butcher’s assistant in Chojnice)
The German administrator of the Chojnice psychiatric hospital
personally supervised the extermination of the patients
Human remains were scattered within a dozen or so meters
The Germans intentionally chose the part where the trench reached a depth of 1.5 to over 2 metres
This was the level where the remains of the victims were found
the human skeletal remains of at least 80 people and the skeletons of about 50 people were recovered from the ground
Four clusters of bones without an anatomical arrangement were uncovered
The skeletal remains were placed on their backs or on their bellies
Traces of injuries were revealed on some of the skulls and some long bones of the limbs; they are cracked
with entry/exit holes visible on the skulls
A decision to continue exhumation works will be made in the near future
Prosecutors of the Branch Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Gdańsk
plan to carry out similar activities also in several other selected places in the vicinity of Gdańsk
where mass graves of the victims of the Pomeranian crime of 1939 may be revealed
The Institute of National Remembrance in Gdańsk asks all people whose relatives lost their lives in Chojnice and the Chojnice county at the hands of officers and collaborators of the Third German Reich to contact the IPN Branch in Gdańsk in order to share information about their relatives and possibly donate genetic material for the purposes of identification tests

I was fortunate to visit Chojnice in May 2014, in connection with the publication of the Polish translation of my Nietzsche and the Nazis book
My visit was made possible by the Fuhrmann Foundation and Mayor Arseniusz Finster
One was the beauty of Chojnice — its historical buildings and central square have been lovingly restored and enterprise seems to be flourishing
well positioned to participate in broader European and world culture in the twenty-first
Also impressive to me was the public discussion of my book under the auspices of the Furhmann Foundation
The give-and-take of the discussion was enjoyable to me
as the quality of the questions was high and the level of knowledge of the participants was strong
It is to Chojnice’s credit that it has regular public forums where the great questions of European history and philosophy are raised and debated
I also was fortunate in meeting — and would like to give thanks to — Dr. Przemysław Zientkowski
and the intellectual collaborator for my visit to Chojnice
That sounds like a wonderful trip – “trip” being an inadequate word
There may well be far more receptiveness to your ideas there as they have lived through those you challenge in their right and left incarnations

Archaeologists have unearthed a mass grave in Poland that they say “documents evidence of the genocide that took place” against Poles by Nazi Germany during World War Two
In an article published yesterday in the journal Antiquity
a team of researchers led by Dawid Kobiałka of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) described their grim discoveries at a site in what they call the “Valley of Death”
That is the name locals gave to an area near the town of Chojnice in northern Poland where a large number of mass killings took place in the aftermath of the German invasion and occupation of Poland in September 1939
Remains of Polish soldiers killed on first day of WWII identified through DNA tests
The authors report that around 30,000-35,000 Polish citizens were executed at 400 sites in October and November 1939 alone in the region of Pomerania
They suggest that these were “the prelude to later Nazi genocides”
they focused on a site where a massacre took place near the end of the war
Eyewitness accounts indicate that around 600 Polish prisoners were murdered by the Gestapo
who then burned their bodies to cover up the evidence
Following archival research and non-invasive scanning of the area
the archaeologists excavated eight trenches used by the Germans to bury the bodies
They discovered over one tonne of human bones

but I’ve never experienced anything like this,” Kobiałka
Personal effects of people killed in both 1939 and 1945 were also found
as well as objects left by the German perpetrators
including over 400 bullet and shell casings
Ballistics experts have identified them as types commonly used by the Gestapo and German police units
Preserved fragments of wood confirmed witness testimonies that the bodies were doused in a flammable substance and set alight
Archival research indicates that those killed were members of the underground Polish resistance
Contents of police chest buried for 75 years after German invasion of Poland restored
The researchers now hope that a combination of that archival research
and planned DNA sampling will allow them to identify some of the victims
the remains will be reburied and the site turned into an official war cemetery
“We hope to be able to tell some of the families what happened to their relatives who
were assumed to have vanished without trace in Chojnice in January 1945,” they write
Their research has been supported by Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Institute of National Remembrance

The magazine also notes that the research is the first to systematically apply archaeological techniques to Second World War mass graves outside concentration and death camps
around six million Polish citizens were killed
constituting around 90% of Poland’s pre-war Jewish population
The majority of the remaining three million were ethnic Poles
many of whom died in concentration camps and mass shootings

Archaeologists in Poland have discovered a mass grave that the Nazis tried to destroy at the end of World War II
filled with the remains of about 500 individuals
is linked to the horrific "Pomeranian Crime" that took place in Poland's pre-war Pomerania province when the Nazis occupied the country in 1939
The Nazis killed up to 35,000 people in Pomerania at the beginning of the war
and they returned in 1945 to kill even more people
as well as to hide evidence of the prior massacres by exhuming and burning the bodies of victims.
archaeologists have now found abundant evidence of one of these mass graves after examining archives
interviewing locals and conducting extensive archaeological surveys

"It was commonly known that not all mass graves from 1939 were found and exhumed
and the grave of those killed in 1945 was not exhumed either," study lead author Dawid Kobiałka
an archaeologist and cultural anthropologist at the Polish Academy of Sciences
Kobiałka and his colleagues used noninvasive techniques to study the area
including with lidar (light detection and ranging)
which uses lasers shot from an aircraft flying overhead to map the topography of the ground
The lidar work revealed trenches that the Polish army had dug in 1939 in anticipation of a war with the Third Reich
the Nazis used these trenches to hide the bodies of their victims
"Executions took place at the trenches," they wrote in the study
"The victims fell into the trenches or their bodies were thrown there by the perpetrators
the team performed surveys on the soil underground with ground-penetrating radar
electromagnetic field analysis and electrical resistivity
and found many anomalies hidden in the soil underground
Metal-detector surveys also revealed many artifacts
which led the researchers to excavate eight of the trenches
shell casings and charred wood that was likely used to burn the bodies.

suggesting the victims were not robbed when they were killed
The researchers identified the ring's owner as Irena Szydłowska
"Her family was informed about the finding
and the plan is to return the ring to them," Kobiałka said

Their historical investigation revealed that some of the killed prisoners were part of the Polish resistance
"A series of specialized analyses of the finds is taking place right now," Kobiałka said
"It is believed that more victims killed in Death Valley will be identified soon
and their families will be informed about what really happened to their beloved ones."
The team also hopes to identify some of the victims with DNA analysis
After the researchers are done examining the site
"the remains will be reburied in Death Valley and the site will become an official war cemetery," they wrote in the study

PolandWarsaw: Poland held a state burial on Monday for over 700 victims of Nazi Germany's World War II mass executions
The remains of these victims were recently discovered in the "Valley of Death" in northern Poland
The ceremonies took place in the town of Chojnice
beginning with a funeral Mass at the local basilica
The victims were then laid to rest with military honors in a nearby cemetery
Their remains were placed in 188 small wooden coffins
each decorated with ribbons in Poland's national colors of white and red
and top officials from the National Remembrance Institute
"We want to restore the memory and dignity of the victims of the crimes in Chojnice." President Duda
emphasized that the victims were killed solely because they were Polish and vowed that their memory would always be honored
were exhumed between 2021 and 2024 from several mass graves on the outskirts of Chojnice
Personal belongings and documents helped identify about 120 victims
Historians have found that the Nazis began executing Polish civilians soon after invading the country on September 1
The remains of another 500 victims come from a January 1945 execution
carried out as German forces were retreating
Bullets and shells from German handguns were found in the graves
Experts will continue to search the area for more mass graves related to the so-called Pomerania Crime
The country also suffered significant damage to its infrastructure

The Pomeranian Massacre of 1939 is a term describing the mass murders of the Polish population in the first months of World War II in the pre-war Pomeranian Voivodeship
thousands of people were murdered – clergy
members of the Jewish community and the mentally ill
The aim of Dr Dawid Kobiałka’s project was to discover previously unknown traces of this crime and to understand its contemporary legacy
Watch a report from the archaeological excavations taking place in the summer of 2024 in Chojnice and learn more about the mass murder of residents of the National Social Welfare Institutions in Chojnice
mass executions took place in the pre-war Pomeranian Voivodeship
resulting in the deaths of 20 to 30 thousand people
The number of victims in this region was twice as high as in other areas of pre-war Poland
as well as the mentally ill and representatives of the Jewish community
were buried in mass graves in order to erase the traces of the crime
Dr Dawid Kobiałka’s research project attempts to analyse this tragic legacy by using an interdisciplinary approach combining the work of specialists in such fields as archaeology
The Germans murdered Polish citizens in approximately 400 towns in the pre-war Pomeranian Voivodeship
The idea of the project was to thoroughly research the past and present heritage of four places related to the Pomeranian Massacre of 1939
executions and mass graves were documented and their contemporary role and significance was analysed
also constituted an important element of research
historical and ethnographic approaches complemented
verified and influenced each other in the course of the research work
The project used forensic archaeology methods
treating mass execution sites as archaeological sites
personal belongings of victims and fragments of remains allow for the reconstruction of key aspects of these crimes and their consequences
but also to reflect on how the legacy of these tragic events affects the present day
It is a unique attempt to combine archaeological data with other sources – historical
visual and material – in order to better understand and commemorate the Pomeranian Massacre of 1939
Dr Dawid Kobiałka is an archaeologist and a cultural anthropologist

He is an author of articles published in international scientific journals such as: "“Antiquity"
"Journal of Contemporary Archeology"
"International Journal of Historical Archeology"
He was awarded the gold Medal Reipublicae Memoriae Meritu at the Pomeranian Congress of National Remembrance on 21 November 2024
The Reipublicae Memoriae Meritum Medal is used by the Institute of National Remembrance to honour those who work to permanently commemorate events and figures from the history of the Polish Nation in the years 1917–1990 and support the Institute of National Remembrance in its educational
and prosecutor Tomasz Jankowski from the Branch Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Gdańsk
We had the opportunity to see with our own eyes the skeletons of the victims
which were carefully and systematically described
reconstructed the stories of the victims whose fate and
their resting place remained unknown for decades
The testimony to this one-day visit is a short report that synthetically shows the enormity of the work carried out by the researchers
The report not only presents the details of the research methodology but also highlights the emotional dimension of the team's work
It is an invitation to reflect on the difficult legacy of the 1939 Pomeranian Crime and a reminder of the duty of remembrance that rests on future generations

Apprentice Jens Erik Eriksen in Kværner and Norway’s minister of petroleum and energy Tord Lien marked the construction start on the Johan Sverdrup utility and living quarters platform on the island of Stord
“Johan Sverdrup is the biggest industrial project in modern times in Norway
and will create considerable value for society for generations to come
Today we are kicking off the construction of the utility and living quarters platform
which is the second of four platform currently under construction in the first project phase,” says Kjetel Digre
Statoil’s project director for Johan Sverdrup
Statoil awarded a joint venture between Kværner and KBR the contract for engineering and construction of the topside for the utility and living quarters platform for the Johan Sverdrup field in June 2015
In 2012 Statoil awarded contracts for four years with options for three times two-year extension to Archer
Stord is central in a comprehensive Johan Sverdrup project
Kværner Stord will fabricate parts of the topside steel frame
and will also assemble all parts for the utility and living quarters platform before the platform is installed on the field in 2019
At peak around 2000 Kværner employees will be involved in Johan Sverdrup deliveries
Kværner’s sub-supplier Apply Leirvik on Stord will construct the accommodation module for the living quarters platform
which will be the biggest on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS)

The other modules for the utility and living quarters platform will be constructed at the Energomontaz Polnoc Gdynia (EPG)
Mostostal Chojnice and Crist Offshore in Poland
Detailed engineering is performed at KBR’s office in Leatherhead
The fabrication work was also kicked off today at two of the yards in Poland and at Apply Leirvik’s yard
“The Johan Sverdrup project is growing every day
It is a complex puzzle with activities spread all over the world
We are 14,000 people working on the project every day in 2016
and together we will perform 100 million working hours
We depend on everyone delivering as required
and all pieces of the puzzle falling into place at the right time and with the right quality
Our top priority is a safe working environment
We do not want any injuries among personnel working for the Johan Sverdrup project,” says Digre
The utility and living quarters platform will accommodate the crew working on the Johan Sverdrup field during the field life of 50 years
The platform will have the largest living quarters on the NCS with a capacity of 560 people
The platform will also accommodate the field’s control and emergency centre
and some utility systems covering the whole field centre
The platform will be completed in the first quarter of 2019
before it is installed on the Johan Sverdrup field by use of the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel
