Home | Survivor Stories: Hyman and Anna Kirsh
receive homecare assistance from the Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Philadelphia
have lived in Philadelphia since they came to the United States in 1947
they had never crossed paths until the war ended
when Hyman found the young woman sleeping on the floor of a Jewish community center in Lodz
Hyman’s father was a member of the Ciechanow Judenrat
and after being told in January 1940 by the Gestapo that he must report weekly
and he wouldn’t do it,” Hyman said of his father
finding him with amputated fingers in a hospital across the Austrian border
The men asked to be sent back to Poland but instead were deported to the Baranovichi ghetto in Belarus
where Hyman nursed his father back to health
and were hidden by partisans until the end of the war
His mother and sister had been deported to Auschwitz; his brother
Anna was sent with her parents and eight siblings to the nearby Nowe Miasto ghetto
a virulent epidemic killed her father and a younger sister
Anna herself caught the sickness and was fevered through the following Passover
feisty 19-year-old Anna ran away from the ghetto and found work with several Polish farmers
staying with one kind-hearted family for six weeks
the farmer warned her that Ciechanow’s Jews were being rounded up and that he would hide her at the farm
But worried about the safety of the farmer’s family if she was caught
Anna returned to the city and was quickly deported to Auschwitz
Anna is the only member of her family to survive the Shoah
Hyman met Anna at the Jewish community center in Lodz
‘I am.’ ” They married in December and soon left
stopping first in France before coming to the United States
Hyman and Anna raised three children in Philadelphia
and are grandparents and great-grandparents
but doctors are unsure it’s a good idea in her current condition
Hyman and Anna have finally begun to accept assistance from the Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Philadelphia
which receives funding for services to survivors from the Claims Conference
The Kirshes receive homecare assistance five hours a week
“It’s very hard for me to ask” for help at home
The couple are proud people and fiercely protective of their independence
“I’m not a person to lean on somebody,” Anna said
the services the Kirshes receive enable them to stay in their home

We are very saddened at the USC Shoah Foundation to learn that our friend and Holocaust survivor Itka Zygmuntowicz passed away October 9
she and her family were forced into the Warsaw Ghetto
Itka was deported by cattle car to Birkenau
where she was separated from her family never to see them again
Later she was forced on a death march towards Ravensbrück concentration camp
Eventually Itka was liberated by the Swedish Red Cross from Malchow concentration camp during Passover in April 1945
while in Sweden and the couple with their two sons migrated to the United States in 1953
The Institute recorded her testimony at her home on March 3
is inspired by one of her mother’s sayings she remembered hearing as a girl but would not come to fully understand and draw strength from until the Holocaust shattered her world
Because of Itka’s gift with language and her perspective as a teenager who survived the Holocaust
her testimony has been an important resource for educators and students
She is featured in several USC Shoah Foundation online educational activities
A strong supporter of the Institute’s educational mission
Itka loved opportunities that involved her meeting with students
“We are grateful for her friendship and for her courage in sharing her story with the world,” said Stephen Smith
executive director of USC Shoah Foundation
“Her commitment to education and tolerance
as well as her unflagging joy in meeting young people
is an inspiration for us at the Institute.”

Sofidel has opened an automated warehouse at its plant in Ciechanów
The new 11,000 m2 warehouse can handle 32,000 pallets of goods and is designed to ensure higher efficiency and safety standards
whose project was coordinated by Sofidel’s technical department
Pallets of goods are stored in an area of 8,500 m2 spread across eight floors
Six stacker trolleys operate here autonomously
and satellite shuttles transfer or pick up pallets of products in the storage cell assigned by the control system
This solution saves up to 40% of warehouse space
Operating under normal 7-day-a-week conditions
product handling is automatic up to the loading docks of departing trucks
From finished product to warehouse storage
the pallet transport process is fully automated
The first part is done using laser-guided shuttles
which move products within the production plant to get them ready for storage
from production to the new warehouse (which is about four hundred meters from the plant)
controlled by a GPS system and transponders to ensure safe and reliable positioning
The two vehicles can handle up to two hundred pallets of products per hour
The goods storage warehouse has two features that raise its safety standards: firstly
the fact that workers and moving machinery are not in the same place
which cancels out any residual risk of impact between workers and moving machinery
fire risk reduction – as within this space
which is isolated from the rest of the building
oxygen is reduced to 14%: this allows a breathable atmosphere to be maintained
but prevents the development and spread of flames

POLAND: A warning issued by the police in Poland has exposed the level of ignorance of refrigerants and the F-gas regulations that exists in some European member states
have warned locals to be wary of scammers while shopping online after a “resident” who appears to have thought he was buying refrigerant
received cylinders that actually contained water
Refrigerant smuggling and illegal sales of HFC refrigerants have existed ever since the European F-gas phase down was introduced in 2014
Much of this illegal gas has been sold through the internet
with internet marketplaces being the most common source
previously reporting massive inflows of illegal material
but while many EU member states have cracked down on these sources of supply
the problem still exists in some countries like Poland
The unnamed resident had paid over PLN20,000 (around €4,760) for 26 cylinders of refrigerant
it turned out that he had been duped and the cylinders contained water instead of gas
The type of “gas” was not revealed and the photo accompanying the police news release had been manipulated in an apparent attempt to obscure the supposed cylinder contents
the still clearly visible cylinder weight (13.6kg) and failure to obscure the word “tetrafluoroethane” revealed that the packaging was originally designed for R134a
there is no recognition that the cylinders were illegal non-refillables
The Ciechanów District police insists that its officers are conducting an investigation into the “fraud case” and have urged people to be especially careful when shopping online
it is always worth verifying the seller’s credibility
especially when dealing with high-value transactions,” the police report says
It is unclear whether the police already know
or whether their investigations will also seek to establish
whether the victim of the fraud was actually F-gas certified and legally allowed to buy HFC refrigerant
Neither do they indicate if they will be seeking to establish whether the buyer was aware that the “refrigerant” being purchased would be supplied in illegal non-refillable cylinders

the figure of worker is increasingly evolving from the logic of a simple operator to that of process controller and warehouse manager
The skills needed to operate the warehouse are shifting from manual handling with forklifts to supervising automated machines
There is therefore a demand for better trained professionals
Sofidel conducted the necessary training for operators of the plant

who has been identified as Jacek Niszczota
is a Catholic cook who reportedly learned Hebrew and about Jewish prayer by listening to Israel Radio
(JTA) — The man who posed as a rabbi in north-central Poland for several years reportedly disappeared from the community he was serving and deleted his Facebook page
The man, who called himself Jacoob Ben Nistell, or Yaakav, admitted two weeks ago during an interview that he is not a rabbi
He reportedly had worked as a volunteer and was not paid for his services
Krzysztof Kazmierczak, a reporter for The Voice of Greater Poland, discovered the man is actually named Jacek Niszczota and comes from Ciechanow
Niszczota had claimed he was from Haifa; it was unclear if he ever lived in or even visited Israel
head of the Poznan Jewish community and vice president of the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland
reportedly determined after the news of Niszczota’s deception broke that he was a Catholic who had worked as a cook in Ciechanow
Kobus reportedly said Niszczota learned Hebrew and about Jewish prayer by listening to Israel Radio
“I’m surprised. I never checked his identity document,” Kobus told Glos Wielkopolski earlier this week
and he has an Israeli passport and a son in the army
I believed that he is who he says he is because of how he looked and that he was able to pray in Hebrew and knew Jewish customs.”
Niszczota led activities about Judaism for children and young people
He also participated in ecumenical prayer services with Polish bishops
and held interfaith meetings with priests and imams on behalf of the Ponzan Jewish community
It is not known why he engaged in such an elaborate deception

Alicja was due to represent Poland at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam with her song “Empires”
Alicja has said that she wanted to highlight some of the crises the world faces
Men build great empires through their work and toil
But it’s these same people who can actually tear it down through their indifference to the environment
National broadcaster TVP chose her through the Szansa na Sukces selection show
She topped both the public and jury vote in the final
We have compiled 10 facts you need to know about Alicja
Alicja Szemplińska — more commonly known as Alicja — is from Ciechanów
With a population of just 44,209 inhabitants
the small north-central city is best known for its historic monuments
other famous Ciechanów citizens include the supermodel Kasia Struss and the popstar Doda
Don’t let her mature voice or showbiz career fool you. Alicja is only 17 and is still in school. In one interview, she suggested that a move to Warsaw could be on the cards after she’s done
she has to make tough decisions like whether she should stick with science or focus more on music
“I devoted myself to biology and chemistry throughout middle and high school
I saw that it’s hard to combine hours of sitting at the piano and hours of learning biology and chemistry
I have to listen to my intuition and what plays in my soul: music
learning is also important and must be continued
But I don’t know if in the direction I was thinking initially”
After two years of non-qualification, Poland overhauled its selection method for 2020. In doing so, it decided to use the already popular Szansa Na Sukces format to find its artist and song. The show’s final saw Alicja compete against Kasia Dereń and Eurovision 2019 alum Albert Cerny. The result was down to a combination of public and jury votes. Alicja gained maximum points from both.
A post shared by ALICJA (@aliciaszemplinska) on Feb 23
Many have compared Alicja’s deep voice to that of the great soul and R&B divas, including the late Whitney Houston. And that’s hardly surprising given that’s the type of music she was brought up on
“I think I got infected by my mother who is a big fan of Whitney Houston
I had a slightly lower voice than most girls my age
It also turned me in this direction”
“Empires” is the work of Patryk Kumór
Patryk Kumór was involved with both of Poland’s Junior Eurovision winning entries
Laurell Barker has penned multiple Eurovision entries including Luca Hanni’s “She Got Me”
S!sters’ “Sister” and Michael Rice’s “Bigger Than Us”
Frazer Mac also worked on “She Got Me” while Dominic Buczkowski-Wojtaszek contributed to Viki Gabor’s “Superhero”
Thus far, both of Alicja’s singles have been written for her by others. But like many of her peers, the singer is keen to eventually write her own material. Between lyrics and melody, Alicja says that she’d feel more comfortable with the former
“I’m not a great composer at the moment
Although even with the help of chords alone
you can create cool things with the piano”
She fills her notebook with verses and rhymes in her spare time
As of 6 April, Poland’s TVP has yet to reveal its plans for Eurovision 2021. However, Alicja has publicly said that she would love a second crack of the whip at participating
Replying to a fan on Instagram she said “I would be thrilled if I could participate in [Eurovision 2021] and represent Poland!”
Do you think Alicja should sing for Poland next year
Read more Eurovision 2020 artist facts here.
I thought that she is going to have matura exams in May as she finishes high school next year
Simply because of this whole Corona-mess TVP doesn’t really think about Eurovision
But if He doesn’t agree Alicja is a good option
I hope Alicja is chosen to represent Poland next year and since she can’t use “Empires” next year
this is a opportunity to compose an even better song to highlight her voice
Band Afromental was in polish preselection in 2008
Her voice is one the best I have heard within Eurovision

The fake rabbi had been serving the Poznan community for years
WARSAW, Poland (JTA) — A rabbi in Poland embraced as a Jewish community’s spiritual leader actually is not a rabbi
aka Yaakav — he used different forms of the name — admitted two weeks ago during an interview that he is not a rabbi
Krzysztof Kazmierczak, a reporter for Glos Wielkopolski, or The Voice of Greater Poland, discovered that the alleged rabbi in fact is Jacek Niszczota and comes from Ciechanow

“I’m surprised. I never checked his identity document,” Alicja Kobus, head of the Poznan Jewish community and vice-president of the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland, told Glos Wielkopolski

The incident happened at an open-air military event near the north-central city of Ciechanów on Sunday
A police Black Hawk helicopter damaged a high-voltage power line while taking off
Wyjaśniane są okoliczności zdarzenia z udziałem policyjnego śmigłowca. Doszło do niego podczas pikniku wojskowego, zorganizowanego z okazji 103. rocznicy bitwy pod Sarnową Górą koło Ciechanowa - poinformowała Komenda Główna Policji. @PolskaPolicja https://t.co/PiiwDOx7iT
Poland's National Police Headquarters said on Monday it was investigating the incident and “all the collected evidence will be forwarded to the prosecution office as soon as possible.”
It added that the State Commission on Aircraft Accidents Investigation (PKBWL) had also been notified
Piotr Tyszka from the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Ciechanów said that the investigation would focus on the possibility that the incident "posed the risk of an air disaster.”

MKS Ciechanów condemned the incident and stressed that it and its fans have nothing to do with it
“First and foremost, we emphasise that our Club regrets the whole situation and strongly condemns the behaviour of the perpetrators of this perilous incident, but at the same time we stress that none of the members of our Club-related community had anything to do with the whole situation,” read a statement issued by the club

The club said the attackers were fans of the Legia Warsaw team
The Israelis emphasise that the action was planned because attackers waited until police had left the area
Police from Plonsk and Radom are investigating the case. “The information provided to the police shows that in the area adjacent to the hotel where the Israeli team was staying, a group of masked people rushed to two members of the team, beat them and ran away. The victims suffered minor abrasions,” read the statement on the police’s website
The Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sport said it is working with authorities in Poland in order to find those responsible for the attack and see that they are published
