WorldNewsAnother unidentified object may have fallen from sky in Poland, police say By ReutersPublished: February 20, 2025 at 9:43AM EST Twitter feed ©2025 BellMedia All Rights Reserved Lamparska's funeral service on October 23 a Russian soldier held captive in a prisoner-of-war camp engraved a beautiful scene on an aluminum canteen showing two people The soldier engraved the moving scene in Czersk, in modern-day Poland while World War I (also called the Great War) raged in Europe Germany controlled much of what is now Poland and was at war with Russia The man is wearing a long robe along with "a coat and a tall and his shoes seem to be made of leather," Kobiałka wrote The woman is also wearing robes and "her neck is decorated with three rows of large beads "Behind them is a landscape of arable fields The scene is surrounded by floral motifs and a zig-zag carving." This "scene might be a material, and sentimental, memory depicting the owner of the artifact and his sweetheart, perhaps his fiancée or his wife," Kobiałka wrote in the study There is an inscription on the back of the canteen written in Cyrillic It contains the intertwining letters "O" and "R," which may be the owner's initials The inscription also says (in translation) "For the memory of the European War 1914–15–16–1917" and "As a memento of being taken into captivity at Korajanowo on 15 April 1915." "Questions thus arise: were all of the carvings completed by the same prisoner at the Czersk camp Was the bird image added later or earlier by another soldier who was detained at the POW camp?" Kobiałka asked Get the world’s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox Thousands of prisoners died in captivity at Czersk The fact that this canteen was left in the POW camp indicates that the person who engraved the love scene was among them Nearly 1,200 prisoners "died at the Czersk camp just in 1918 because of typhus and Spanish flu epidemics among others," Kobiałka told Live Science "It is probable that the owner could [have] died in 1918 The personal belongings of prisoners who died because of infectious diseases were not reused They were perceived as 'dangerous,' 'contagious' and This is the most probable interpretation [of] why such [a] beautiful object like the canteen was thrown away," Kobialka said The lost love scene wasn't rediscovered until 2006 when a local man named Piotr Szulc found it in the forest The canteen is now part of an Exhibition of Nature of the Tuchola Forest and the River Wda being held in the Polish town of Czarna Woda Original article on Live Science Owen JarusSocial Links NavigationLive Science ContributorOwen Jarus is a regular contributor to Live Science who writes about archaeology and humans' past He has also written for The Independent (UK) The Canadian Press (CP) and The Associated Press (AP) Owen has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toronto and a journalism degree from Ryerson University.  Archaeologists discover hundreds of metal objects up to 3,400 years old on mysterious volcanic hilltop in Hungary These are the sharpest images yet of planets being born around distant stars An unidentified object fell into a pond near a property in Będzimierowice The incident was reported to the police by a local resident and both the Polish Space Agency (POLSA) and the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency were notified According to local media the resident checked her surveillance footage after noticing a 30 cm-wide hole in the pond showed a glowing object falling into the pond with military personnel expected to arrive soon A video of the event was shared on social media by the local news portal Wizjalokalna.pl Do stawu przy posesji mial spaść niezidentyfikowany obiekt ZDJĘCIA: https://www.wizjalokalna.pl/b-gm-czersk-mieszkanka-zglosila-niezidentyfikowany-obiekt-poinformowana-m-in-polska-agencja-kosmiczna-czy-to-fragment-rakiety-falcon-b-art80477 SpaceX Falcon 9 debris found in Poland after uncontrolled reentry possibly debris from SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket POLSA confirmed that between Tuesday night and early Wednesday an uncontrolled reentry of a Falcon 9 R/B rocket stage occurred over Polish territory The reentering part of the rocket weighed approximately four tons The rocket was launched on February 1 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California as part of SpaceX’s Starlink Group 11-4 mission Missed email delayed Falcon 9 debris warning was urgently summoned to the Ministry of Development and Technology POLSA had notified the government about the Falcon 9 debris on Tuesday but the message was sent to an inactive email address and never reached officials Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz instructed Minister Paszyk to clarify the situation Grzegorz Wrochna ma stawić się w gabinecie ministra Krzysztofa Paszyka i wyjaśnić wczorajszy incydenthttps://t.co/9lK0DFzzDM Falcon 9 debris confirmed in Poland as another rocket reentry expected tonight bright flashes were observed in the Polish sky confirming the uncontrolled reentry of the Falcon 9 rocket stage Around 9:00 AM, a composite tank-like object was found in Komorniki, near Poznań and additional fragments were discovered in other locations 🇵🇱🚀 A fragment of the Elon Musk's Falcon 9 rocket re-entered the atmosphere uncontrollably over Poland. The Polish Space Agency (POLSA) confirmed the event and identified the object as part of the SpaceX Starlink mission, launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, on… pic.twitter.com/lE8pF5JF8c is expected to reenter Earth’s atmosphere over Poland Jasny, płonący obiekt przeleciał nad Polską.
