The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa draws visitors from around the world to Central Bucks County
Located on Beacon Hill in Doylestown overlooking Peace Valley Park
the international landmark provides a place for prayer
learning and self-guided tours at its 170-acre campus with two churches
Each year, the shrine holds a Polish-American festival over two weekends that draws over 30,000 people from around the region
And on Sunday, Donald Trump is scheduled to pay a visit to the shrine
But what makes this place of worship so significant goes well beyond its upcoming visit from the former president and 2024 candidate
here are some interesting things to know about this highly-regarded cultural and religious destination:
The history of the shrine in Central Bucks County dates back to 1951, when Father Michael Zembrzuski came to the United States, according to Our Lady of Czestochowa's website
He brought with him a copy of the Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa
with the hopes of establishing an American shrine similar to one in Czestochowa
Zembrzuski was granted permission by the Holy See and Cardinal O’Hara of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to establish the shrine on land he purchased in the municiplaity of New Britain Township
The shrine held its first mass in a small wooden barn two years later
and it would be another five years until there was a following
to acquire more property for a proper chapel in 1960
The groundbreaking and construction of the shrine began in 1964
and the shrine was finished and a dedication was held in 1966
the shrine built almost 60 years ago remains a towering centerpiece of the grounds
while additional structures have been added over time
The barn chapel was transported in its entirety and relocated to its current location at the shrine's cemetery in 1972
Johnson and his family attended a ceremony during which the new shrine was dedicated in honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa
as he campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination ahead of the 1980 primary election
Ronald Reagan came to the shrine for the conclusion of the annual Polish-American Festival
Presidential election: What are the swing states 2024? How Pennsylvania, others could shape election
visited the shrine three times in its history
though his first two visits were before he was named pope and instead was Cardinal Karol Wojtyla
and he returned in 1976 with the delegation of Polish Bishops for the 41st International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia
two years after he was elected pope and took the name John Paul
This time he blessed and signed the Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa
which is currently located in the lower church of the shrine's chapel
A large statue of the pope greets visitors in front of the shrine and another bust sits inside
The cemetery at the shrine also has a bronze statue containing the heart of Poland’s third prime minister
was a pianist and composer who traveled the United States during World War I to raise money and build a pro-Polish movement
He served as the prime minister from January to November 1919
Paderewski resigned from office after “realizing that forming a national union and attaining peace with the Soviet government were impossibilities,” according to archived information online from Arlington National Cemetery
where his body was entombed until after the fall of the Soviet Union
Roosevelt offered to give the former statesmen a “temporary resting place” in America
saying “he may lie there until Poland is free,” the Arlington archive adds
While Paderewski’s body was returned to Poland in 1992
his final wishes were for his heart to remain in America

In February, Częstochowa Foundry—operating under the Liberty Częstochowa name—was designated a strategic enterprise, with government officials citing its unique capability to produce hardened heavy-gauge steel plate for the defense industry.
The plant also boasts one of the European Union’s largest production halls, suitable for servicing military equipment.
Tusk’s visit follows a lease agreement made in November 2024, when state-owned Węglokoks regained control of the idled facility, restoring operations in the steel mill in January and in the heavy-plate rolling mill in February.
Although Węglokoks held a right of first refusal, the Ministry of Defense opted to purchase the plant’s assets directly. A local court last week ratified a new valuation to underpin the transaction.
“Today, with the Ministry of Defense becoming the owner of this plant, we ensure long-term orders not only for Częstochowa Foundry but for all its partners,” Tusk told workers at a brief press conference.
He emphasized that Polish firms “must be supported by their own government by every available means” and vowed to replicate this “top-to-bottom” support model nationwide.
Tusk described Częstochowa Foundry as a “positive rarity” on the European stage.
“Your production is modern, demanding, and in demand,” he said, adding that significant EU and national defense budgets would channel funds into plants like this one.
The prime minister also reiterated his earlier pledge that no Polish company would again lose out to foreign competitors due to favoritism.
“We will reverse that dynamic 180 degrees,” he said.
Officials expect the Ministry of Defense takeover to secure the plant’s future, safeguarding hundreds of jobs and cementing Częstochowa Foundry’s role in supplying armored vehicle components, naval plate, and other military-grade steel products essential for Poland’s expanding defense procurement plans.

Researchers have made a remarkable find in Poland’s Częstochowa Museum collection—several ancient ornaments made from meteoritic iron
A team of Polish and French scientists analyzed burial objects from two early Iron Age graveyards
Częstochowa-Raków and Częstochowa-Mirów
Their work has given us new insights into how early metalworkers used cosmic materials in their craft
which date back to about 750–600 BCE
This culture lived in areas that are now Poland
archaeologists knew about just two meteoritic iron bracelets in the Częstochowa Museum’s collection
Professor Albert Jambon a meteorite specialist from Sorbonne University and Dr
Karol Dzięgielewski from Jagiellonian University revisited these artifacts
This new study led them to find three more ornaments made from meteoritic iron
The scientists used portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (p-XRF) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) to study 26 artifacts
These cutting-edge techniques showed high levels of nickel—characteristic of ataxites
The results suggest that all five meteoritic iron objects came from one meteorite
likely a contemporary fall rather than an imported material
people valued meteoritic iron because it was so scarce
But its use in these Iron Age burial grounds suggests a shift in perception
Earlier societies viewed meteoritic iron as a material with great symbolic or ritual significance
seems to have just seen it as an accessible raw material
The presence of both meteoritic and smelted iron within the same burial contexts
tells us that meteoritic iron wasn’t just for certain social groups or religious purposes
Dzięgielewski said that Poland has no evidence of local iron smelting during this period
This means the terrestrial iron in these objects was likely imported
But the meteoritic iron was almost certainly local
This supports the idea that ancient craftsmen might have collected and worked with this iron not long after it fell to Earth
One fascinating part of the find is the way the meteoritic iron was incorporated into jewelry
The presence of varying compositions within individual artifacts hints that metalworkers mixed meteoritic iron with smelted iron to achieve specific aesthetic or structural effects
This technique came about almost a millennium before we knew about wootz and Damascus steel
raising new questions about early metallurgical innovations
This finding broadens our knowledge of ancient ironworking methods
Researchers aim to explore other sites in Poland to determine whether similar meteoritic iron objects exist elsewhere

entertainment and fun will take place from noon to 8 p.m
The public is invited to celebrate traditional Polish culture with live entertainment
Attracting more than 25,000 visitors a year
the festival is the region’s largest Polish American festival
guests enjoy a variety of amusement rides and continuous live entertainment on two outdoor stages
The festival showcases award-winning polka and disco polo bands as well as Polish folk dance groups from across the United States and Canada
A much-anticipated part of the festival is the performance of the Polish American String Band in their Mummers costumes on the second Sunday of the festival
Visitors to the festival will also witness demonstrations by historical re-enactors of the 17th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (known as the Banner of Jasna Gora) and the World War II Living History group
One of the most delicious ways to enjoy Polish culture is to sample the wide variety of Polish cuisine available for purchase
The festival menu includes smoked and grilled kielbasa
Also featured at the festival will be a Polish Vodka Tasting experience
which includes unlimited entrance to midway rides all day long (extreme rides at additional cost)

The ‘original’ festival was a simple picnic that was held by volunteers
their families and friends during the year of the Shrine’s dedication
it inspired its continuation and expansion for the following year
Virginia along with Father Michael Zembruski
Their idea was to create an ethnic celebration combined with an old-fashioned country fair
so despite the hard work of many volunteers
Doubts were quickly allayed when thousands of people arrived to join in the festivities at this relatively unknown shrine
Pennsylvania State Police had to be called in to handle the miles-long traffic jams
could hardly keep up with the overwhelming demand for kielbasa sandwiches
The festival included a professional art exhibit of Polish artists
which graced the walls of a historic Bucks County barn located on the shrine grounds
strains of Chopin works could be heard continuously played on an Aeolian grand player piano
Noted helicopter aviation pioneer and National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipient
graciously donated a helicopter to give rides to excited guests
The lively beat of the Polish-American String Band had many visitors toe tapping and has remained a regular event each year
The original festival was simply called the Annual Festival and Country Fair
it was renamed the Polish Festival and Country Fair
and was moved to the upper grounds where the new Shrine basilica had been built
To better accommodate the ever-increasing number of visitors
several years later the festival dates were expanded to include a second weekend
the name was shortened to simply the Polish-American Festival
To call attention to its Polish American origin and to emphasis the family nature of the festival
now calling it the Polish American Family Festival and Country Fair
One of the festival’s most notable visitors over the years was President Ronald Reagan
who enjoyed a Placki (Potato Pancakes) on the festival grounds
Stuffed cabbage is another popular items at the festival

A Roman sword dating back nearly 2,000 years has been unearthed in southern Poland by a pair of history enthusiasts
almost one-metre long and likely a double-edged spatha used by Roman cavalry
will go on display in the city of Częstochowa after undergoing conservation work
The discovery was made in an area called the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland
though the exact location has not been given in order to prevent unauthorised excavations
“No one can quite say how or why this sword ended up there; only research on it will perhaps yield some detailed knowledge,” Rafał Proszowski from the Inventum Association
Their organisation normally searches for relics left over from the Second World War
“We’d never found anything like this before,” says Proszowski
He and Lampa immediately handed over the item to the municipal museum in Częstochowa
The Inventum Association thinks that the sword may provide further evidence of the presence in this area of the so-called Przeworsk culture
a group associated with the Vandals that lived in central Europe during the Roman period
which could be linked to an ancient burial rite
Archaeologist Magdalena Wieczorek-Szmal from the Częstochowa Museum told Gazeta Wyborcza that the sword is a rare and valuable find
She confirmed that it dates to the 3rd or 4th century AD and is likely associated with the Przeworsk culture
Experts at the museum note that traces on the blade indicate that it could have been exposed to fire
but further tests are required to confirm this
The sword will undergo conservation work before being put on display at the recently modernised exhibition on Częstochowa’s history in the town hall
A sword believed to be over 1,000 years old has been found during dredging work on a river in Poland
The find has sparked speculation that the item belonged to a Viking, but one expert has expressed scepticism about that idea https://t.co/7NorHjZJgq
