A Catholic priest who allegedly hosted a drug-fuelled “sex party” in his church-owned apartment at which a man lost consciousness and was denied medical treatment has been charged by prosecutors and taken into pretrial detention
has been charged with “crimes against sexual freedom and decency”
failure to provide assistance to someone in medical need
a court decided to place him in pretrial detention for two months “due to the severe punishment facing the suspect and the fear of obstruction of justice”

the Catholic curia of Sosnowiec confirmed last year that “Father Tomasz Z.
committed a very serious violation of moral norms
which the church does not consent to and strongly condemns”
It added that “Father Tomasz Z.’s conduct seriously violated the obligations arising from the clerical state
which may be considered a crime within the meaning of canon law”
“Taking into account the great scandal among the faithful
the bishop of Sosnowiec decided to initiate proceedings
under which the most severe church penalties
could be applied to the priest,” it concluded

state prosecutors also launched an investigation
they confirmed that three people were involved in the incident: Tomasz Z.; a man who lost consciousness and is being treated as a victim; and a third person who had called for help
Previous reports by the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper – which first broke the story – claimed
that the man who lost consciousness was a prostitute
But prosecutors now say that he did not derive any financial benefit from the event and they have “firmly denied” he was a prostitute
during the party the men took potency medication and drank alcohol
his friend called an ambulance but Tomasz Z
refused to let paramedics into the apartment until police intervened

an industrial city of 120,000 in Poland’s south
have won a final victory in a long-running battle to save a beloved but controversial communist-era monument
they prevented its demolition by enlisting the posthumous help of Jimi Hendrix
they have won a final ruling from Poland’s highest court of appeal
which rejected an attempt by a state body to remove the statue under a “de-communisation” law

The monument in question was erected in 1970
“To the Heroes of the Red Banner”
Attempts to dismantle it began in the 1990s
after Poland shook off the yoke of communism and sought to clear public spaces of remnants of its past regime
residents rallied to save the statue from detonation with explosives by renaming it as a monument to Hendrix and Kurt Cobain and standing guard next to it night and day
Its plaque was changed to read: “To Jimi Hendrix
the monument was cleaned and a new plaque installed
referring back to the original conception: “To the heroes of the red banners
To the founders of the history of struggle for national and social liberation.”
however: a bronze statute of him sitting on a bench was unveiled nearby
with the former plaque from the monument mounted upon it

But in 2018 – after Poland’s conservative government passed a law requiring the “decommunisation” of public spaces – the governor of the Silesia Province in which Dąbrowa Górnicza is located asked the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN)
a government institution charged with documenting and researching Poland’s communist past
The IPN found that the statue does indeed “symbolise communism”
It noted that the monument’s date of unveiling – 8 November 1970 – had been chosen to mark the anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia
director of the IPN’s Bureau for Commemorating Struggle and Martyrdom
“on the 100th anniversary of our country regaining independence [in 1918]
a monument dedicated to the communists should exist in the public space of a large Polish city,” reports local portal news portal NaszeMiasto
The municipal authorities in Dąbrowa Górnicza
They argued that the monument commemorates regional events from 1905 and 1918

“[The monument] is associated with the events of 1918
which led to the emergence of local authorities in the region
which supported the independence government appointed by [Polish chief of state] Józef Piłsudski,” the mayor’s office said last year
“I encourage the IPN to learn more about the history of our city,” said the mayor
“Maybe then it will be easier to understand what this monument has become for our community.”
a well-known meeting place and one of the symbols of the city that blends in with its landscape,” Bazylak added
Hundreds of residents from Dąbrowa Górnicza and neighbouring towns flocked to defend the monument
holding a demonstration beneath it with signs reading “Hands off the statue”
Students from the local arts school painted over the rifle held by one of the carved figures
while another student painted “In memory of Jimi Hendrix” across the statue

claims to have found no archival evidence of the monument’s links to the events of 1905
It notes that communist propaganda often exploited such allusions to national events
The institute therefore upheld its decision
That prompted the district authorities in Dąbrowa Górnicza to take the case to the provincial administrative court
which in January this year overturned the IPN’s decision
The court found that the IPN’s justification had used “imprecise language” and did not present a convincing case
It also ruled that the institute had “not responded in a substantive manner” to the arguments presented by the local authorities
taking it to the Supreme Administrative Court (NSA) in Warsaw
Poland’s highest appeals court for administrative cases
the NSA has rejected the IPN’s appeal and upheld the decision of the provincial court
“Nobody can order us to demolish the monument” now

The diocese in southwest Poland has been engulfed in scandal since reports emerged last September of an orgy at the home of a priest in the town of Dąbrowa Górnicza.
The priest, referred to as Tomasz Z. due to Polish privacy laws, was placed in pre-trial detention after his arrest on Monday. He could face up to 10 years in prison.
"Three of [the charges] concern crimes described in the law on counteracting drug addiction and are related to providing drugs, one of these is additionally related to... crimes against sexual freedom and decency," a spokesman for the local prosecution told PAP.
The fourth charge concerns the failure to assist someone facing a threat to their life or health.
According to Polish media reports, a man collapsed at the party after taking too many erectile dysfunction pills.
One of the partygoers called an ambulance, but when paramedics arrived they were refused entry and were only able to attend to the man after police were called, according to the reports.
The media reports said the man was a male prostitute but the prosecutor's office denied that. It said three men had taken part in the event - the man who collapsed, Tomasz Z. and a man who called for help.
The bishop of the diocese stepped down last year, the Vatican said at the time, without giving a reason for his resignation. Tomasz Z. was discharged from the clergy last year after the media reported on the alleged sex party.
Parallel to the work of the prosecutor's office, the church will also conduct its own trial in the case of Tomasz Z., the results of which will be forwarded to the Vatican, the press office of the Sosnowiec diocese told Reuters.
