With its dark façade and tall, jagged towers, the church looks less like a place of worship and more like the lair of an evil villain you might find in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings leading residents to jokingly refer to it as "Our Lady of Mordor." The ominous-looking chapel belongs to a larger wave of visually striking churches constructed across Poland during the 1970s and 1980s These structures were often designed anonymously by architects working in their spare time and then built by the parishioners themselves in defiance of the (officially atheist) Communist regime The church can be reached via an easy 15-minute walk north from the city center Past the megayachts in the hyper-modern marina of Vouliagmeni is a small well-hidden chapel adorned with pebbles and maritime imagery This semi-permanent cathedral was built of cardboard and steel after Christchurch's 2011 earthquake has been reconstructed inside the city's Roman walls This seven-sided Romanesque chapel is regarded as the oldest building in Rovinj Twenty carved heads in Glasgow take a comical this church became home to millions of books so that residents of two rival villages had their own entrances The story behind this uniquely-shaped tower involves ancient empires Drug Delivery Business January 23, 2025 By The Stelo glucose monitor for people with diabetes who are not taking insulin. [Image courtesy of Dexcom]After a busy 2024, Dexcom (Nasdaq:DXCM) Chair and CEO Kevin Sayer believes the company is set for more milestones in 2025 In 2024, the company became the first to receive FDA approval for an over-the-counter (OTC) continuous glucose monitor (CGM), the Stelo device. Meanwhile, Dexcom continues to advance its G7 platform, its latest-generation CGM offering. In 2024, the company launched a new capability, as G7 can now connect directly to the Apple Watch in the U.S Tandem later added G7 to its second pump, the small, durable Mobi system, in May. Finally, in June, Insulet began the full launch of its latest-generation Omnipod 5 with G7 in the U.S “We’re very excited about all those things going on,” Sayer told Drug Delivery Business News in a recent interview “Our [outside the U.S.] opportunities are still really big and we continued our U.S 2025 is really shaping up to be a good year for us.” The San Diego–based company — the second-largest diabetes tech company in the world — just reported preliminary 2024 revenues of $4.032 billion for an 11% increase over 2023 “[I just like to] make everybody remember what a great position this company is in,” Sayer said Sayer says the latest quarter rounded out a solid year and “stabilized” the business following an especially difficult second quarter that fell shy of “high standards.” The company opened 2025 with a new partnership with Life Time a “health and wellness pioneer” with more than 170 athletic country clubs across the U.S Sayer also anticipates word from the FDA on the 15-day CGM submission soon “We did file our 15-day product with the FDA and don’t have it approved yet,” he said “We expect to launch that in 2025.” with a future iteration of its CGM on the way Sayer described the next-generation sensor as 50% smaller than the G7 He said the much smaller platform features more powerful electronics The G7 CGM now connects directly to the Apple Watch [Image courtesy of Dexcom]Currently in feasibility studies he said the company is now seeing how it works and is “very excited” about the future device “The platform we’re building with our next-gen wearable is much smaller than the current one,” Sayer said “The more powerful electronics means it can handle three different readings at the same time like a couple years before that is through all of our work process but these things are all happening.” The company also reported record new patient levels in the third and fourth quarters and Sayer expects more in the U.S He specifically pointed to outside-the-U.S markets that could still get coverage for CGM for those with type 2 diabetes Sayer said there’s plenty of room to grow with insulin users who still don’t use CGM calling it a “huge opportunity.” With that the company continues to expand its automated insulin delivery connectivity options with new coverage and directives on the technology all around the world “These systems now do what they promised to do years ago helping you manage your diabetes without having to manage it all the time,” he said “We’re partnering with some good companies that are doing some good things.” With the launch of generative AI for Stelo in December 2024 Dexcom said it became the first CGM manufacturer to integrate GenAI into this technology The new platform analyzes individual health data patterns It could reveal a direct association between lifestyle choices and glucose levels and provide actionable insights to improve metabolic health A pickleball player wears the Stelo over-the-counter CGM [Image courtesy of Dexcom]Stelo now produces weekly insights with more personalized tips recommendations and education related to diet The Stelo app then contextualizes these findings for the user Between working with the FDA to ensure the company is taking the proper steps and adding capabilities to identify new biomarkers but Sayer believes Dexcom has the infrastructure to build this out “If you sit in a room around a bunch of people who’ve battled diabetes for several years there’s no limit to the features they want to put in a product,” Sayer said “They would put everything in that you could possibly imagine what we’re really trying to do is take an approach — with Stelo in particular — and our G7 app going forward whereby we listen to what they need.” Sayer attributed the ability to do this to the maturity of Dexcom’s software team Prior to the G7 app — on which Stelo is built — he said the company wasn’t “really much of a software company.” G6 had an architecture that required dozens of separate updates just to make one uniform change to the app “Those things are happening for Stelo to create the ability for people to engage,” he said new form factors and more are on Dexcom’s list of ways to reach more people in a meaningful way The company is also looking at adding multiple biomarkers to its sensors That could potentially influence the next-generation CGM as well [Image courtesy of Dexcom/Oura]In the near-term the company’s partnership with Oura marks yet another avenue “We can merge activity data from whatever activity source you have — Apple Watch and of course the Oura Ring,” Sayer said “They’ll be bringing Stelo data into Oura Rings before we’ll get Oura data into Stelo but we’re very excited about that.” Dexcom is exploring new ways to bring Stelo to users The company began selling Stelo through its own e-commerce platform but is looking to expand to the Amazon marketplace He expects that to occur before the end of the first quarter That adds to the deal with Life Time as the gym brand’s official biosensor which will lead to co-marketing and eventually a distribution channel Sayer said that the experience of seeing patients order their OTC product and receive it within a day was new but left users “absolutely thrilled.” “Everybody on the outside is all worried about revenue numbers and you always want to sell as much as you can,” Sayer said the most important thing here was to learn.” Sean Whooley is an associate editor who mainly produces work for MassDevice, Medical Design & Outsourcing and Drug This Hanseatic League city was nearly completely flattened along with the church of The Blessed Virgin Mary in its historic center. The church lay in ruins without funding to rebuild until 1961, when local artist Gerard Kwiatkowski approached the government with a proposition. He was to use the site of the church ruins as a modern exploratory art museum. With a space that provided no protection from the elements, he hosted modern sculpture art shows. The shows of three-dimensional art forms proved to be successful, drawing international and UNESCO awards. All the positive attention on the art gallery earned funding from regional Polish authorities to rebuild the church, primarily the roof. The renovations provided a showroom with lots of natural light, large public spaces, and most importantly protection from the rain. With the EL Galeria blossoming, Gerard left to continue his art career elsewhere and the gallery was passed on to other museum curators. The legacy of the original EL Gallery continues today in the monastery-turned-art gallery. In addition to viewing art, visitors can attend jazz performances and art discussions in the gallery’s courtyard. Easily accessed from the city center.  The legacy of a wealthy executive and his wife, this little-known art museum features works by Picasso, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, and more. Now a memorial to merchant sailors and Titanic victims, this medieval church was destroyed by bombing raids in 1940. Mexico's largest collection of masks is found in the ruins of an abandoned convent. A gem in the small Missouri town where Winston Churchill coined the term "Iron Curtain" and effectively began the Cold War. The bombed out remains of the old church were kept intact next to the new one, as a reminder of the futility of war. This spectacular dome managed to survive after being bombed in World War II, in an event known as the "Miracle of Mosta." The statue's head is one of the few fragments of the original Urakami Cathedral to survive the atomic bomb. A sobering scientific reminder of the human damage caused by the advent of the nuclear age. We speak with Dr. Joanna Czerepko, an Elbląg native, head of the ESG Manager postgraduate program at the Gdańsk University’s Faculty of Economics, as well as the member of ESG Research LAB of UG. We discuss an innovative project launched by the city of Elbląg, aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs and investors in their transition to sustainable development based on ESG criteria. FOCUS ON Business: Elbląg has undertaken the task of exploring how the city can support entrepreneurs and investors in their transition towards sustainable development, following ESG criteria. How did the idea for this project come about, and what was the underlying vision behind its creation? What were the steps involved in developing the document? The work progressed in multiple directions and required a lot of commitment from many City Hall staff members, which we – as the academic partner, the Gdańsk University – greatly appreciated. We started with meetings with the Mayor and Vice-Mayors of Elbląg. During them we provided substantive training on ESG. We were surprised by the great openness of the city authorities to the needs of entrepreneurs. We then started working on the structure of the document, which we called the ‘ESG audit’. It is not a formal report, as the city is not obliged to report on sustainability. We were developing the document as a response to the potential needs of businesses to collect information for their reports. Practically all Departments were involved in providing information and we also had a substantive meeting with them. I can confidently say that when looking for support on ESG data available to the city, you can turn to the City Hall, this knowledge is already there. We are currently working on refining our project. We are moving into a phase where we will be surveying entrepreneurs whether the approach we are proposing meets their needs. What are the issues, areas and their scope covered in this study? In the report we adopted the structure of the ESRS, referring to the subjects and smaller thematic units covered in the standards. We are aware that companies will report different indicators, depending on the results of the dual materiality assessment. Therefore, we were interested in presenting the full spectrum of information arising from the potential needs of companies that intersect with the urban tissue. We have addressed the issue of heat production and the energy mix used for this purpose (with a significant share of biomass), which affects greenhouse gas emissions. We have analysed the issues of water and wastewater treatment using high quality infrastructure. We have discussed the topic of pollution and the circular economy – recognising here the major role of the Waste Disposal Plant and local NGOs, including the ESWiP Association. In the social area, we tried to show a full spectrum of information regarding the own company employees and those in the value chains, taking into account, among other things, the availability of human resources and education. We have also diagnosed the importance of ensuring sustainable mobility combined on the one hand with total working time (including that spent on commuting) and greenhouse gas emissions in scope III (emissions from the means of transport used by employees). How will local businesses and investors be able to utilize the results of the study? I believe that cooperation is key to the transformation processes we are experiencing at the moment. Elbląg independently carries out a number of activities, such as the Green Budget, actively involving the residents. If the potential for joint implementation of projects is also seen by businesses, we will achieve a much better effect for our ‘little homeland’. Was there anything in the findings or data from the study that caught you by surprise? What surprised me in the first place was the City Council’s serious commitment and really genuine curiosity about how businesses could be helped. It was also important that most of the data was already collected and compiled in various reports. In particular, the Municipal Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the City of Elbląg is to be appreciated, which provided us with a solid basis for data acquisition in the environmental area, especially ESRS E1 Climate Change. How can the study support Elbląg’s long-term sustainability strategy? Are there plans to monitor and update its findings in the future? I think our meetings and working together have raised not only the awareness of the needs of businesses, but also that change really matters. In further steps, after meetings with entrepreneurs, we plan to make the document available for review. The data for subsequent years will be updated. 05 Apr 2025 18:00:00 GMT?.css-1txiau5-AnswerContainer{color:var(--GlobalColorScheme-Text-secondaryText2);}Zaglebie Sosnowiec won 2–1 over Olimpia Elblag We are a smaller entity within the IKM group, but we are constantly developing, which has actually been recognized by prestigious rankings. We have had to work hard in recent years to be ranked 4th in the ranking of the most dynamic companies in Elbląg. In the IKM Group we belong to the engineering/ operations/production division, where we are highly recognised for our professional representation of the IKM Brand. For development and growth, you need stabilisation and support. Here is all in place. An ideal location does not exist, but it is necessary to recognise and use the qualities of the region and to match the development path to the available infrastructure and personnel. In my opinion, there is excellent infrastructure for business. The city creates "greenhouse" conditions by assigning an investor care personnel. IKM HVAC Production is currently implementing a new investment located in Elbląg's Modrzewina South district. Please tell us more about this project. Modrzewina South in Elbląg, in my opinion, is one of a Top5 location in north-eastern Poland. It's not just about the plots, which are increasingly scarce and the land is fickle, but about the whole environment. Imagine a city district with roads, pavements, traffic, all the infrastructure and utilities but no houses. That is what Modrzewina South is. For IKM, we have chosen a plot in the immediate vicinity of the Elbląg Technology Park. It's a challenging location, but we have very close plans to work with the ETP and it suits us. The large plot of land allows us to locate a new two aisle hall together with an office building so that there is room for expansion in the future. How do you see the future of the company in Elbląg in the next 5-10 years? The industry we operate in is specific and strongly influenced by global trends. The new factory and the expansion of the current business is not an empty goal in itself, but merely a stopgap to meet the current market demands. The offshore sector is seeing a decline in new investments, new projects. Fewer new platforms are being built. Those manufactured and operating offshore need to be upgraded, improved and serviced. This is our future. Also we want to be ready for a change of direction, therefore we will be launching a specialised maintenance training and competence centre in the near future. We will have customers, trainees from all over the world. The neighbourhood of the ETP and the preparation of the staff are of key importance for us. The energy sector may turn to products and services for new forms of energy including offshore wind farms, floating PV farms, hydrogen. Services and manufacturing of equipment for separation, capture and storage of carbon dioxide could be of major importance in the near future and we want to be ready for that. Photo by: Mieczysław Jaworski, www.mjstudio.pl On September 19, Arkadiusz Pawelek set sail from the Polish port outpost of Świnoujście bound for a 65,000km journey in a one-of-a-kind boat. Pawelek has spent the last two years building his sailboat, “Elblag,” in a barn. View this post on Instagram See this post on Instagram Pawelek’s project didn’t look like much at first. In fact, his first-ever Instagram post served to celebrate the fact that he had turned a few pieces of plywood into the vessel’s first components. “Not long ago it was just a pile of boards and now there are blocks,” he commented (auto-translated) with the wink emoji, appearing to affect a touch of pride. “They will be made into a yacht for the Southern Ocean.” A rooster crows partway through the video. View this post on Instagram See this post on Instagram The Southern Ocean is the body of water encircling Antarctica. That’s where he started heading on Monday, the Polish news outlet Onet reported One important thing is for sure about Pawelek’s voyage: He’s going for it. You can track him and “Elblag” here it looks like he’s headed roughly for Copenhagen Pawełek as of late afternoon Copenhagen time From what other information is available, he seems not to be doing this for the Instagram likes. In a post that interrupts the boat-building content, he trims a horse’s hoof — apparently in the same barn where he’s building the boat. A politically and religiously subversive statement combining Virgin Mary imagery and anti-tank weaponry later appears in the tiles It looks like “Vectra” sponsors Pawelek, but if you Google that term in English you get zero results for any company that looks like a potential boat sponsor Pawelek shared the following scrap of information with Onet There is a small table that will serve as a navigation table and possibly to eat something on it I will lose weight for sure because I have half a kilo a day allocated to me The journey will take me no less than 300 days.” If spending a year sleeping on the floor of a boat sounds punishing to you But Pawelek seems to be cut from a different cloth Sam Anderson spent his 20s as an adventure rock climber and Thailand to scope out prime stone and great stories Life on the road gradually transformed into a seat behind the keyboard where he acted as a founding writer of the AllGear Digital Newsroom and earned 1,500+ bylines in four years on topics from pro rock climbing to slingshots and scientific breakthroughs Sign up to receive ExplorersWeb content direct to your inbox once a week Sep 17, 2022 | Business, Energy & Climate, Politics Poland has inaugurated a new canal that will allow ships to avoid Russian waters The opening was held to coincide today with the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Poland in 1939 “The opening of this investment is a great victory for Poland for those who understand the word sovereignty,” declared President Andrzej Duda at the ceremony “A state that values its potential cannot allow someone else to decide its affairs Poland needs this [canal] to become independent of Russian decisions,” he added The 1,300-metre-long canal – construction of which began in 2019 – cuts across the Vistula Spit thereby linking the Baltic Sea with the Vistula Lagoon It will allow vessels to pass between the two without having to go through the current channel that is in the waters of Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave The project – whose budget has spiralled from an original 880 million zloty to around 2 billion zloty (€424 million) – has been hailed as a vital economic and geopolitical investment by the Polish government But it has also raised concerns from environmentalists about the damage to local habitats while others have questioned whether the relatively small canal will provide much practical benefit “The question is not whether the largest ships will be able to pass; we have other ports for this,” he declared.” The point is that symbolically this path should be open so we do not have to ask for the consent of a country that is not friendly towards us whose authorities do not hesitate to attack and enslave others.” Speaking this week to Business Insider Polska said that if smaller ships can use the new canal to reach the port of Elbląg – which is accessible through the Vistula Lagoon – it will help free up capacity for larger vessels in Gdańsk Spat over Vistula Spit: Poland ploughs on with canal despite concerns from green activists and EU “on the 83rd anniversary of the Soviet attack on Poland we are breaking the last symbolic ties of dependence” Poland fell under decades of Soviet-backed communist rule including gas dependence,” Morawiecki continued “We are cutting our dependence on both Russia and Germany.” Russia imposed a ban on shipping from passing into the Vistula Lagoon Both Morawiecki and ruling party chairman Jarosław Kaczyński argued during their speeches today that the new canal will now open up economic opportunities for the city — Kancelaria Premiera (@PremierRP) September 17, 2022 work has not yet been completed on dredging a channel from the canal to Elbląg meaning that larger vessels are currently unable to enter the city’s port The government says it is up to local authorities to finish the work telling Business Insider Polska this week that it is the state’s responsibility to finish the investment it has undertaken He suggests that it has not done so because Wróblewski belongs to an opposition party The mayor says that negotiations are still underway over the issue with the government hoping to take control of or at least a significant stake in Elbląg’s port Deputy infrastructure minister Marek Gróbarczyk told TVP this week that 10,000-tonne-capacity ships would be able to enter the port within a year 17 września rząd oficjalnie otworzy przekop przez Mierzeję Wiślaną. Tweet Accept the challenges and embrace the adventure has for military families heading to Poland They are among one of the first to be stationed at NATO Headquarters in Elblag following the 2016 Summit in Warsaw.  “Poland captured a piece of my heart,” Cymantha said after experiencing the spirit of the people Secretary of State Mike Pompeo echoed this sentiment last year when he announced “Our alliance cannot be at full strength without robust contributions from all allies President Trump is grateful for Poland’s leadership in contributing its fair share to our common defense.”  Pompeo finalized the redeployment of American troops from Germany to Poland adding to the 4,500 service members already there Most troops are on a nine-month rotational basis without families but the Hesses lived there for two years.  Cymantha explained because there wasn’t an American base nearby they lived 90 minutes west of the headquarters so their children could attend the British International School of Gdansk Additional limits included the ability to work as a civilian “It was possible to work on the economy and maintain a [Status of Forces Agreement] status but your employer had to be willing to file for your work permit It is a costly and lengthy process,” she said challenges didn’t keep them from making the most of their assignment Cymantha didn’t hesitate to call specialists trips to the ER and mental health services.  “We had no communication issues and facilities were modern and clean,” she said our grocery bill was less than $100 a week and $30 to dine out Read: Smooth move: PCS tips and tricks Cymantha also elaborated on her children’s unique academic experiences explaining her son loved all the outdoor extracurricular activities and her daughter attended an acting workshop in Oxford Potential drawbacks included class size and the European model of education teenagers must attend designated vocational schools based on testing Other guidance Cymantha gave involved transportation Though critical infrastructure was expansive and accessible “Getting a car wasn’t easy and I suggest incoming families do not consider purchasing a vehicle in Poland under current conditions.”  They all fell in love with Poland,” she explained though it was difficult being one of the few Americans in the country Cymantha looked back fondly on her time in Poland because she engaged with others She reiterated the importance of incoming military families immersing into the community to prevent isolation.  our life was hectic … [But] in Poland our life was simple Most people tried to speak English and once they found out we were military Poland has a turbulent history and the American presence gives them peace of mind.” Jeff and Nina Byrd lived in a nearby suburb for nearly three years with their daughters the Byrd’s time in Poland was like the Hess’ experience.  the lack of an American support structure was an obstacle for Nina especially with there being more of a language barrier in Elblag it wasn’t until April 2020 when a family readiness group became functional out of Szczecin — a seven-hour drive from Elblag Another concern Nina discussed was the school Elblag had one option — a private school that taught in Polish She explained their older daughter learned Polish quickly but their youngest “struggled the whole 2 ½ years” they were there.  Nina also described difficulties getting medical care despite having access to a NATO translator.  “We had some bad experiences … [So] our neighbors introduced us to an on-call doctor who spoke some English and was willing to see us,” Nina said she expressed appreciation for the support received from Polish friends.  Read: Going OCONUS with your military family Finally, both spouses expressed the value of military friendships during the challenging assignment. Cymantha reached out to spouses coming into the country, such as Nina. And Nina, in turn, helped families arriving in greater numbers in Elblag. Consequently, Nina mirrored Cymantha’s statement about life in Poland.  “Between friendships created, the amazing work-life balance, and the graciousness of the Polish people, I had the most memorable two years of my life,” she said.
