where Gliwice is one of the main urban centers with around 170,000 inhabitants
nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions from road transportation are more elevated than in rural areas
The Real Urban Emissions (TRUE) Initiative
using real-world emission factors derived from a previous emissions testing campaign in Warsaw and methodology developed in a previous TRUE study
evaluate the potential vehicle emission reductions that could be achieved by implementing a low-emission zone (LEZ) in Gliwice between 2026 and 2035
The analysis found that implementing an LEZ which restricts the oldest
highest-emitting vehicle groups first would have immediate benefits
while minimizing impacts on vehicle owners
The LEZ could achieve a 21-28% reduction in NOx emissions and 37-43% reduction in PM emissions the first year
the emission benefits of an LEZ would be substantial regardless of vehicle owners’ response to the LEZ
but the transition to zero-emission alternatives
could accelerate a 75% reduction in NOx emissions by 7 years

A two-camera fan-filmed video mix of GODSMACK's March 27 concert at PreZero Arena in Gliwice
GODSMACK kicked off its 2025 European tour on March 22 in Sofia
Filling in for drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola on the trek are Will Hunt (EVANESCENCE) and Sam Bam Koltun (DOROTHY
the setlist for the Gliwice concert was as follows:
GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna was asked by Elena Rozberg of Bulgaria's Z-Rock radio station about the current state of GODSMACK
[that's] such a tricky question to answer right now at this stage
I can tell you that there has definitely been some changes that have happened in the last few months
They are changes that we're not sure will be permanent or temporary
but everybody and everyone is in good health and in really good spirits
We're [playing to] the biggest audiences ever
and the shows are just becoming more and more valuable
we still appreciate coming to places like Sofia that is so far away from where we started and being able to come here and sell out a 13,000-seat arena
"All I can tell you right now is that the band is in good health
but there's gonna be a little bit of a different visual for everybody [at the Sofia show]," he added
"Tony and Shannon have some personal things going on
So we have a couple of guest musicians playing with us that are phenomenal."
Asked to elaborate on the reason for Shannon and Tony's absences from the trek
I don't know if I feel safe enough talking about that yet
because I don't wanna give people the wrong impression
Right now we're still at a stage where we're trying to figure out exactly what's happening
but we're also trying to respect their privacy
So whatever Tony and Shannon have going on in their personal life
we're just trying to respect that and at the same time still come here and put on a really great show
I can tell you right now that we have a guest drummer playing with us
And he is such a good friend of ours and such a great musician
and we've been having so much fun with him
And then we have a guitar player with us named Sam Koltun
who is somebody who — he's played with several different bands and a really
it sounds exactly like we've always sounded
Larkin joined GODSMACK in 2002 after cutting his teeth with WRATHCHILD (later WRATCHILD AMERICA and SOULS AT ZERO) before getting picked up by UGLY KID JOE in time for a taste of their zenith
Tony has been the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for GODSMACK since the mid-1990s following the departure of Lee Richards
GODSMACK's spring 2025 European tour features support from P.O.D
The 14-date trek will end on April 12 in Oberhausen
The LP was co-produced by Erna and Andrew "Mudrock" Murdock (AVENGED SEVENFOLD
The first single from "Lighting Up The Sky"
marked the first release from GODSMACK in four years

More than 105 tonnes of fish have died in an artificial lake and canal in Poland, raising renewed fears that the environmental disaster that two years ago killed over half of the fish in the Oder river could be repeated
the die-off in Dzierżno Duże lake and the Gliwice Canal is linked with toxic golden algae blooms
The canal is partly supplied by the lake and connects the city of Gliwice with the Oder
The climate ministry says it is working to ensure the algae do not reach the Oder
and an experimental solution has already helped to reduce the blooms
which was in power at the height of the last crisis and is in opposition now
accusing it of downplaying the unfolding disaster

from 13 to 17 August the climate ministry oversaw an experiment involving dosing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
which is the main supply of the Gliwice Canal’s water
“What we have been doing here…is limiting the disaster taking place at Dzierżno Duże so that it does not spread further into the Gliwice Canal and
into the Oder River,” said climate minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska during a press conference on Sunday
It added that the use of hydrogen peroxide is only a crisis response tool
and work on the long-term reduction of salinity
one of the main causes of golden algae blooms in the Oder
Dead fish were first fished out of the lake and canal in early August. Since then, more than 105 tonnes have been removed, reported the Polish Press Agency (PAP). In 2022, up to 1,000 tonnes of fish died in the Oder.
Deputy climate minister Urszula Zielińska said at the press conference that in addition to the hydrogen peroxide experiment
around 7,000 samples had been taken and more than 80,000 algae tests had been carried out at 11 points along the Oder and the Vistula
“In cooperation with the IRŚ [Institute of Inland Fisheries]
we have installed 30 permanent monitoring points where salinity
temperature and oxygenation of the water along the Oder River can be checked 24 hours a day,” Zielińska said
Together with the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management
the ministry has set up a system to predict salinity 72 hours in advance
forecast and react better to crises such as the one today in Dzierżno Duże”
Earlier this month, the climate ministry notified prosecutors that the PiS government failed to implement a water monitoring system promised after the 2022 Oder disaster

believe that the current government is downplaying the present disaster
“Have you noticed this spectacular 180-degree turn?” asked Jacek Sasin
fish were dying off in agony because of ‘PiS’s mercury’; today
Several PiS politicians also criticised Prime Minister Donald Tusk for not having yet publicly addressed the crisis
although he was vocal about the 2022 disaster when he was opposition leader
“The Tusk team used the situation on the Oder to launch an extreme attack on the PiS government instead of working together to resolve this problem for the future,” wrote PiS MP Dariusz Matecki on X
above a tweet by Tusk from 2022 about the Oder crisis

This year's trip looked a little different
The people of Gliwice made a concerted effort to help Ukrainian businesses
and the city opened a support center in an arena where supplies could be donated and refugees could get what they needed
Kraj's parents regularly donated supplies to the center
overheard Ukrainian refugee parents talking about their children outgrowing the shoes they arrived in
and she asked faculty and staff in the College of Health Sciences if they would like to donate children's shoes for her to take with her on her trip
Faculty and staff were touched by Kraj's story and grateful to have the opportunity to send a little piece of ODU to help refugees
A few students saw the box of shoes in her office and dropped some off as well
several packs of socks and support for the oversized luggage fees
"My husband went ahead of me to Kraków with the 11 largest pairs
and I flew to Gliwice with the 50 remaining pairs in June," Kraj explained
Control of the donation center transferred from the city of Gliwice to a private foundation
and temporarily closed in July to be relocated from the arena to a local ice skating rink owned by Politechnika Śląska (Silesian University of Technology)
Kraj's husband joined her in Gliwice during that time
and they took the shoes to the donation center on Aug
She said the donation was met with "great joy."
some of whom lived in Gliwice before the crisis began
Kraj said that although people are adapting to life in a crisis
there is still a lot of uncertainty and anger
as well as concern that it will spill over the border

The Stellantis plant in Gliwice recently announced a reduction of 500 jobs due to a drastic decline in orders
leading to the closure of the third production shift
Another bad news for Stellantis’ European production
one of the world’s largest car manufacturers
Managing numerous prestigious brands like Alfa Romeo
and others across the ocean is becoming increasingly challenging
the Powertrain facility in Bielsko-Biała has already ceased engine production in spring 2024
has produced over 7.3 million diesel and gasoline engines used in vehicles across various group brands
it’s time for this Polish Stellantis production to move far away and relocate the production line to South America
The production line has been dismantled and transferred to Brazil
The Polish plant’s land has also been sold for 25 million euros to a real estate development company
DL Invest plans to transform it into an office complex
Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa had shown interest in taking over the site for industrial purposes
but the investment was subsequently abandoned
The sale marks the end of a long industrial tradition in Bielsko-Biała
where the facility was equipped with ideal heavy industry infrastructure
including railway connections and specialized machinery
The closure involved two phases of layoffs
Some workers received offers to be relocated to other Stellantis group factories
These changes inevitably reflect the profound transformations taking place in the global automotive industry
restructuring and relocation strategies are intertwined with technological evolution and the pursuit of greater production efficiency
The desperate cost-cutting is slowly devastating a sector in continuous difficulty
The urban area covers 675 square kilometers (261 square miles and has a population density of 2,550 per square kilometer
The area is also referred to as the Upper Silesian urban area
Katowice-Gliwice-Tychy is a genuine conurbation
an urban area formed by the merging of separate urban areas into one
Continuous urban areas have no rural territory
most urban areas are formed as a larger urban area engulfs smaller suburbs
there is usually no overly dominant core municipality
The largest conurbation in the world is Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto
where four historic cities (including Naha) have expanded and merged together
Katowice-Gliwice-Tychy is similar to another much larger conurbation
Germany’s Essen-Dusseldorf (the “Rhine-Ruhr”)
which has more than three times as many residents (6.1 million)
Both conurbations have been the leading industrial areas of their nations and major centers of coal and steel production
Other similarities will be discussed below
The largest municipality in the urban area
Katowice has about 1/6th of the population
Four other municipalities have populations above 150,000
All of the largest cities have lost population in recent years
Katowice reached its peak population of about 370,000 in 1987
with the latest city estimate (2019) down more than 20% to 292,000
This is also similar to the Essen-Dusseldorf urban area
where the three largest municipalities each have approximately 10% of the population
stretching is 55 kilometers east to west (33 miles)
somewhat less than the east-west orientation of Essen Dusseldorf
With its heavy industrial and mining economy
Katowice-Gliwice-Tychy has a multitude of factory buildings
But there has also been considerable redevelopment of the area
The photograph above shows the Silesian City Center
which is a large enclosed mall in the core of Katowice
Modern development is also evident in Photos 3 to 6
Heritage development is illustrated in Photos in Katowice, Chorzow, Zabrze (called Hindenberg between World War I and World War II) and Gliwice (Photos 7 to 11)
Katowice-Gliwice-Tychy has developed large suburban areas
Suburban housing is illustrated in Photos 12-18
Katowice-Gliwice-Tychy has had historical significance
after the First Silesian War and was a part of the unified Germany that emerged before World War I
The Upper Silesian Urban Area was the southeastern most extension of Germany
with Krakow in the Austro-Hungarian Empire
while the Russian Empire extended to within 50 kilometers (30 miles) of both Katowice and Krakow (to the north and east)
the Republic of Poland was established by the Treaty of Versailles
but the sovereignty over some border areas were not firmly established
the area was split between Germany and Poland
The opening salvos of World War II in Europe began on September 1, 1939, as Germany invaded Poland, claiming that there had been an armed provocation by Poland on the previous day. The reality is that the provocation had been a ruse by a German force attired in Polish uniforms on a radio tower in Gliwice (Photo 19)
the Essen-Dusseldorf conurbation also made history before World War II
as it had been included in the demilitarized Rhineland
One of the most important events leading up to World War II was the reoccupation of the Rhineland by Germany
a Soviet annexation of an even larger area of Poland was included in the Potsdam agreement
In a footnote to Cold War history, the city of Katowice was renamed Stalinogrod
in honor of Soviet leader Josef Stalin following his death in 1953
with the collapse of the Communist regime in 1989 times have fared better for Poland
But as in other parts of central or eastern Europe, the economy is changing. CBRE has ranked the Katowice cluster (Silesian province, which includes the entire Katowice-Gliwice-Tychy urban area) as the sixth strongest high-tech growth cluster in Europe (out of 281 NUTS 2 regions of Europe)
a tech cluster must have had double digit growth since 2010
with a projection for growth in the next five years
This is an important sign of economic transformation and progress
has been on the ascendancy and the Upper Silesian urban area has been an important part of that change

Echoing the PVC piping that Gambit distributes
a metal fabrication company created a series of aluminium tubes
which were welded together and riveted to a frame
A Katowice-based architecture studio creates Gambit
a whimsical head office for a Polish plastic piping distributor
Inventive architecture can be found in the most unheralded locations
If you are heading west out of the historic Polish city of Krakow
and happen to find yourself in the industrial city of Gliwice
you should check out a building that is disguised as a stack of pipes
with a profile that evokes an ancient Egyptian tomb.
which distributes the heavy-duty plastic piping of Swiss firm Georg Fischer
The company wanted a distinctive head office and warehouse
strategically located close to several major highways
and this was the brief it set to architecture studio KWK Promes
Robert Konieczny
looking for a defining idea at the start of every project
and reject all unnecessary elements,’ he writes in a just-published monograph comprising 19 of his firm’s buildings
‘Every step of the design must have an explanation,’ he says
‘The power of logic can sometimes lead to fresh
inserting massive pivoting doors to fill gaps in the masonry and open the interior to public view
It is one of seven finalists up for the 2024 EU mies Prize
Gambit respects the modest scale of houses that border its industrial zone of warehouses and mineshafts (an area recalling the years when Silesia was a centre of coal production)
The building comprises three sections: a double-height storage block linked to a two-storey office/showroom by a low workshop in which orders are prepared for shipment.
it plays off the pitched slate roofs of neighbouring houses and produces a shape that appears to shift subtly as you move around it
KWK’s initial concept was to envelope the reinforced concrete building with lengths of the piping that Gambit distributes: a solution that would be simple
The client could supply the elements from its own inventory and use its expertise to assemble them
a building that advertises the product it sells.
escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox
Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour would have called it a ‘duck’ (a building that expresses its function through its form
a concept they first established in their book Learning from Las Vegas in 1972)
in contrast to the painted sheds that most industrial firms settle for
flammable and vulnerable to UV rays to be acceptable as a cladding material.
it invited a metal fabrication company to shape thin
inexpensive aluminium sheeting into sections of tubing
The shorter sections would cover the end walls
while the longer ones would be welded together and riveted to a frame along the sides and sloping roof
It was hard to achieve the level of precision required for a perfect fit
but the builders rose to the challenge.
To provide good insulation for the work spaces and unheated storage areas
the side walls include a layer of glass as a waterproof membrane and a thick layer of insulation between the pipes and the concrete
The office block incorporates a ground-floor showroom and upstairs meeting rooms that open onto a central roof terrace
Geothermal wells and a heat pump cover most power needs
By using a commonplace element in such an expressive way
KWK has elevated the humble metal tube in one fell swoop
the idea just came to him as he walked through the warehouse with its shelves of stacked pipes.

Polish promotion KSW just booked the biggest bout it could muster from its roster to round off their year in 2022
Former middleweight champion Mamed Khalidov will take on five-time former World’s Strongest Man and KSW knockout artist Mariusz Pudzianowski in the blockbuster main event of KSW 77
which takes place on December 17 in Gliwice
The bout pits head to head two members of KSW royalty
Khalidov is arguably the greatest champion in the promotion’s history
having held the middleweight and light heavyweight titles over a career with the promotion that stretches back to 2007
After a three-fight skid that prompted him to announce his retirement in 2019
Khalidov returned in stunning fashion to knock out middleweight champion Scott Askham in 36 seconds and recapture the title at 185 pounds
But that reign lasted just one fight as he was finished with strikes for the first time since his pro debut by heavy-handed Roberto Soldic at KSW 65 in December 2021
and he’s set to face quite literally the biggest test of his 45-fight MMA career in Pudzianowski
who weighs in toward or at the upper limit of the 265-pound heavyweght division
has never weighed in for a bout heavier than the 209 pounds he registered on the scale for his catchweight bout with Martin Zawada in 2007
The former strongman is riding a five-fight
with his most recent win coming against another former champion
It’s a bout that will capture the imagination of fight fans across Europe
and will cement the legacy of the winner as one of the promotion’s all-time greats
The co-main event for KSW 77 has also been confirmed
with bantamweight champion Sebastian Przybysz putting his 135-pound title on the line against Jakub Wiklacz in a trilogy bout

Group PSA has announced that it will produce large vans at its Gliwice vehicle manufacturing plant in Poland by the end of 2021 due to LCV capacity constraints elsewhere in its manufacturing network
PSA says the SevelSud plant (FCA/PSA joint venture located in Val di Sangro
Italy) has exceeded its manufacturing capacities over the last three years with the production of the Peugeot Boxer
Citroën Jumper and Fiat Ducato large vans
The company also maintains that the transition of the Opel and Vauxhall brands to the shared large vans platform will require additional production capacities
Groupe PSA has therefore decided to extend its presence in Gliwice in Poland to fully utilise its competitiveness
The former GM Europe (Opel) plant will be transformed to accommodate light commercial vehicles and adapted to the specific platform dedicated to large vans
The investment aims at ensuring the plant’s production capacity of up to 100,000 large vans per year
The Gliwice plant also makes the Astra passenger car – also made at Ellesmere Port in the UK
In a statement sent to just-auto regarding future Astra investment
PSA said: ‘Ellesmere Port and Gliwice will continue to produce the Astra model
No decision about the allocation of the future Astra has been taken
We continue to discuss and work with all partners to improve the competitiveness of our plants.’
PSA says the increase in manufacturing capacities in the large vans segment for the Peugeot
Opel and Vauxhall brands will enable Groupe PSA to ‘better supply customers by the end of 2021 and will provide manufacturing visibility for more than a decade in Gliwice’
“This good news for Gliwice is a clear demonstration that our Excellent Plant Program is being executed across all European countries with synergies and efficiency
The industrial performance will be a key enabler to serve our ambitions in the commercial vehicle market
guaranteeing our customers the best offer in this segment for all our brands,” said Yann Vincent
“Welcoming the production of large vans is a major milestone for the future of the Gliwice location and also a big challenge to achieve the highest levels of efficiency and quality for the satisfaction of business customers
We will demonstrate in the years to come our agility to adapt our processes to the production of this type of vehicle and confirm the confidence placed in us,” said Andrzej Korpak

as he opens his title challenge against Hungarian debutant Gyorgy Jehirszki
Humphries is still searching for his maiden World Series title after suffering back-to-back semi-final defeats to Rob Cross in New York and Copenhagen
although he’s relishing his latest visit to Poland
“I don’t know much about Gyorgy but he’s in this tournament for a reason
so I won’t take him lightly,” vowed the world number one
“This is a great tournament to be involved in and I’m really happy to be here
Last year was a great success and I’m sure this year will be a great success too
“The fans were absolutely amazing in Warsaw and it’s a bigger arena this year

as they take on Czech duo Karel Sedlacek and Adam Gawlas respectively

and the Dutchman is eyeing a repeat performance as he aims to reignite his season
The three-time World Champion hasn’t lifted a PDC title since his Dutch Darts Masters triumph back in January
and he faces a tough test against the dangerous Sedlacek in Friday’s first round
or I’d have stayed at home,” declared a bullish Van Gerwen
who dispatched Dimitri Van den Bergh in last year’s final
“I really enjoyed playing in Poland last year and I had a good result
“Every tournament I compete in I want to win
because I’ve got a tough first round game against Karel [Sedlacek]
“The East Europe players are improving every time
I think it’s a really strong line-up here and I’m really looking forward to playing.”
Friday’s first round will see the eight PDC superstars locking horns with their eight East Europe rivals
as Littler takes on former World Youth Championship runner-up Gawlas
The Czech star defeated the 17-year-old on his way to reaching the UK Open semi-finals in 2023
although the Premier League champion represents a very different proposition ahead of their latest meeting
“It’s going to be another good experience for me; a different crowd
who is bidding to build on his Premier League heroics in Poland
so hopefully I can put on a show for them and get the win
“It was going to be tough no matter who I played
I think it’s a really strong field of players
“The Premier League win was massive for me
but all my focus is on this weekend in Poland.”
Masters champion Stephen Bunting will play Krzysztof Ratajski in a blockbuster first round showdown

GLIWICE (Poland) - The precious FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2024 ticket is one the line when Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland go head to head meet in a mouth-watering Final on Sunday in Gliwice
Here is a guide of everything you need to know about the winner-takes-all matchup at the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament
At the starting grid of this 2023 FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland stood up as the main favorites to go all the way until the showpiece game in Gliwice
being put in the same Group meant one of them losing was the only option when facing each other in the fight for supremacy
Following the two convincing victories respectively against surprise package Estonia and first-seeded Israel
both Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina will now battle to stay on the Road to Paris
The former has not visited an Olympics since 1980
while the latter has never played on such a fascinating stage and in order to have an opportunity to potentially change history
After what we saw on the glass in the Semi-Finals clash between Israel and Bosnia and Herzegovina
it will once again be a matter of dominating the paint for the Balkan nation to keep dreaming about the Olympic Games
Polish standout Aleksander Balcerowski will find two high-level colleagues on the other side of the floor in Jusuf Nurkic and Luka Garza
while Mateusz Ponitka and Dzanan Musa will square off to establish who’s the better ball handler
What was the crucial difference between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland during their Group B clash in Gameday 2
The respective three-point shooting percentages
The ballers in yellow and blue experienced a rough night by banking only 7 of 36 (19.4%) from long-range
while the hosts had a way more solid 14 of 32 (43.8%)
Recording 10 or more shots from beyond the arc than inside the area
It makes perfect sense to say that the ticket for the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments belongs to those who will find the right balance in shot selection - and a perhaps bit more luck from outside
It's not a big surprise considering that Bosnia and Herzegovina surpassed 100 points against Hungary
but the Dragons have been the best-scoring team in the whole 2023 FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Poland-Estonia with 87.3 points per game
these are the two best teams at shooting the basketball from the field - sat with 48.1 percent in first and 46.3 percent in second spot
It could certainly be fun seeing all those buckets dropping in this showpiece game if the trend continues
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland are the only teams whose players have recorded double-doubles in the competition
Jusuf Nurkic and Luka Garza have accomplished the feat twice each
