Residents of a small Polish town have painted their own pedestrian crossing onto a busy road after complaining that the authorities had failed to improve safety
The action is a violation of the law and could result in those responsible facing fines
decided to take the matters into their own hands on a national road that separates a car park from a recreation centre and reservoir popular with wakeboarders
The makeshift pedestrian crossing sprang up under the cover of darkness
warning: “This action was taken by residents for residents
The announcement added that the spot has seen many accidents but that the local authorities had failed to act
since the road was under the authority of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA)
A spokesman for the GDDKiA acknowledged that in 2020 it had received a proposal for a traffic management project
but he noted that it contained errors and was sent back for revisions
Interference with road markings is illegal in Poland and can be punished with a fine of up to 5,000 zloty (€1,065)
notes the Auto Świat motoring news website
if an accident occurred at the makeshift crossing
Road deaths in Poland – among EU’s highest – continue to fall
no such incident took place and the improvised crossing has since been removed by the GDDKiA
The number of road deaths in Poland is among the highest in the European Union
though it has been in decline over the past decade and continued to fall last year
In recent years the government has taken a number of steps to improve road safety, including giving pedestrians priority at road crossings and approving a tenfold increase in fines for speeding

Our weekly email is chockful of interesting and relevant insights into Jewish history
Masza Rosenroth survived Auschwitz and became a successful celebrity seamstress
Masza Rosenroth was born in 1924 to a middle-class
I always saw him inviting guests to our apartment.”
She would boil noodles and make a soup from the leftover water by adding potatoes and chicken fat
She would make a big pot of this soup and would invite all the poor people to eat
Despite their family’s warmth and generosity
Poland was a difficult country for Jews as antisemitism was prevalent and increasing
We were hoping for the day that we could leave
He would read the newspaper every Friday night
will have to leave Poland when you grow up.’”
The day they needed to leave came faster than anticipated
she woke up to the deafening sounds of airplanes flying overhead
Masza’s family ran to an underground shelter
they emerged to discover that the Germans now occupied their city
Mordechai’s German friend warned him that Jews were going to be hunted down and murdered
ran through alleys warning other Jewish families
all the Jewish families in her town were forced on a 22-mile march to the town of Glowno
Masza’s family lived with another family in overcrowded and unhealthy conditions
where a Jewish Ghetto was established soon after
The Lodz ghetto made the Glowno seem like an oasis
They were always starving and full of fear
Masza and Gutia were both assigned to work; Masza in a children’s clothing factory and Gutia sewing soldiers’ uniforms
The girls both had to steal food in order to survive
On the way home from work they would find pots of cooked food cooling on nearby windowsills
They would grab them without being seen and share the pots of food with their parents and younger sister who were not working
“You had to learn how to steal and to fight for survival,” Masza said
these pots of food were not enough to sustain their family and Mordechai eventually died of starvation
Days passed before anyone removed his body from the room
Her body also remained in the room for days before being removed
Masza still has vivid memories and nightmares of sleeping near her parents’ deceased bodies
There was no space in her life for emotion
I never saw the graves… It just was what it was.”
her sister Surra was deported by the Nazis
She was very sick in the Lodz ghetto and I went to visit her in the hospital almost every day
take me home.’ But there was no home to take her to
I agreed for her to leave the hospital and brought her back to our ‘home.’ The very next day
German trucks came and cleared the hospital… Everyone was killed.”
Masza Rosenroth (Photo: Lynn Abesera Photography)
stood in the courtyard of the ghetto during selections
She watched German soldiers grab children from the arms of their mothers and toss them onto trucks
She also saw Nazis fling infants from third-story windows as they searched throughout the building
and there was nothing I could do about it.”
deportations continued to become more regular and Masza and Gutia began hiding to avoid being sent to the camps
They found a long-term spot and hid with ten other people in a small dirt space under a kitchen floor
They would tremble in fear as they heard the footsteps of the soldiers searching for Jews overhead
there was a baby with them who was inconsolable
“I watched as the mother suffocated the baby with a pillow
and in early August there was an announcement promising that whoever showed up at the train station would be resettled more comfortably
They were fooled and pushed into a cattle car that brought them to Auschwitz-Birkenau
Auschwitz-Birkenau shocked Masza to her core and a few terrible memories still haunt her to this day
“I walked out of my barrack and I saw a young man
He was 15 years old and was known as a famous painter
They broke every finger so he should never be able to paint again.”
Masza was in her barrack with 100 other women
“Next to me was a woman giving birth right there on the dirt floor
An SS woman came in with a piece of newspaper
I see this vision every night in my dreams.”
He needed 100 women to make ammunition for the Germans
My sister was standing next to me and didn’t make the selection
I spoke German well and figured I had nothing to lose so I said to him
The girls were sent to Bad Kudowa (now Kudowa Zdroj
They were then sent to work about a mile from their barracks to an underground factory to mass produce V2 rockets
Masza worked on a machine with several buttons
so the girls were forced to move 100-pound rocks from one spot to another
remaining positive despite her horrific surroundings
She and her sister became close with ten other girls
Masza feels they all survived because they clung to hope
They spent a lot of time talking about post-wartime their dreams
They awoke one morning and all the guards were gone
Czechoslovakian partisans entered the camp and yelled
Masza and Gutia left for Lodz to try to find their family
They learned that Surra was killed in a mobile gas van in Chelmno
She sent him letters with the help of the Red Cross
Masza went dancing with a group of friends in Regensburg
who initially didn’t recognize her or Gutia
In December 1946 they married and settled in Frankfurt
President Truman opened the door and said whoever wants to come to America can come
Masza was interested in fashion and clothing design
She took sewing classes in Germany and visited Paris to see the fashion shows and learn more
Masza and Jacob arrived in the United States on January 1
where Jacob opened a liquor store and Masza continued dressmaking
Her reputation as an excellent dressmaker rapidly spread and soon she had a massive clientele base with some of the most elite names in the entertainment industry
Masza created a thriving business alongside her husband
They made sure their two children had a strong Jewish education
and wonderful memories of traditions and holidays
They worked long hours which kept her mind off the atrocities
I just talked about my work and building up a family.”
Masza believes that staying logical and positive are her best tools for resilience
she continued their legacy and found ways to give back to the community
She was always active in the 1939 Club and Chapman University to educate about the Holocaust
She would have the students meet survivors and get to know them
“I always thought that I would survive and make a better world for my family and my people.”
I can never comprehend how anyone survived those atrocities
That poor lady sure shows amazing resiliance
those awful memories will last her forever
We all have a time to be born and a time to die
Masza is the most beautiful soul you'll ever meet
While this brave amazing woman went on to form a family after horrendous years trying to survive
today we have Fakestinian psychos trying to destroy the successful Jewish State
My husband was her doctor and lost contact with her when he retired

But going to the office doesn’t have to suck your life force
New research out of Finland finds that one simple tweak to the interior design of offices could help quickly improve the health—and the skin—of office workers
The addition of a plant-filled green wall in an office environment for just a few weeks has been shown to increase the amount of Lactobacillus bacteria on workers’ skin
a genus of microbes that has been shown to help the skin fend off pathogens and inflammation and improve its overall health
After only two weeks working alongside this living wall of plants
workers had measurably healthier skin and immune system responses
[Image: onurdongel/iStock/Getty Images Plus]Conducted by researchers from the University of Helsinki, the University of Tampere, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland, the study was recently published in the journal Scientific Reports
People working in two different university offices in Finland had their spaces outfitted with one or two small mobile green walls measuring 6.5 feet by 3.2 feet. Built by the company Naava
the portable green walls feature three types of plants: heartleaf philodendron
The plants and their roots absorb air in the office
and the walls use automated fans to circulate this air back into the space
The study’s results are based on 28 human subjects
11 of whom were exposed to the green wall for 2 weeks
Skin and blood samples were collected from each subject before the experiment
again after 14 days when the walls were removed from the offices
Those working near the green wall experienced an average doubling of the abundance of Lactobacillus on their skin compared with workers in the control group

A minor problem in the grand scheme of things
I'm willing to try anything to get some semblance of my calm
The thing I was most excited about when unboxing the FOREO UFO 2—a cute
high-tech device that's meant to make masks work harder and better—is that each mask isn't your typical full-face situation
you unwrap a small circle drenched in whatever formula you choose that goes directly onto the tool
which syncs to the downloaded FOREO app on your phone to guide you through the all-in-one at-home Swedish facial
The number of single-use “power masks” to choose from is plentiful and targeted to pretty much every skin issue you can think of
Because mine is dry and looking a little hard-worn
I chose to kick things off before bed with the “H2Overdose” mask which includes moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid and Ceramide 3
I opted for “Youth Junkie” (my new nickname) which delivers a direct hit of collagen
Here’s what I realized immediately: FOREO makes it so simple to use this device that you will
I have a pantry full of buzzy beauty tools I invested in but simply don’t have 30 minutes or more a day to spare in order to see results
The entire FOREO UFO 2 experience takes only two minutes: 30 seconds to Prep
if you’re craving a few more minutes of relaxation
you can customize your treatment in-app to extend your facial.) Each segment uses a mix of warming thermo-therapy
all of which do their part to help each mask’s serum penetrate deeper into your skin
A calming voice on the app explains what’s happening during these two minutes
The device delightfully heats up (to loosen sebum and help open your pores for better absorption)
(Those “T-Sonic” good vibes are soundwaves that reach deep into your skin to exfoliate your skin and stimulate it at the cellular level.) Chill music plays
I basically forget I’m sitting on my bed in between Zooms and feel like I’m laying on a spa table somewhere
each power mask’s essence was fully absorbed into my skin—no rubbing or patting necessary
I emerged from both UFO 2 skin-care enhancing treatments with my face looking noticeably more hydrated—drenched
I applied a light moisturizer before bed but when I took the UFO for a morning spin
I didn’t feel I needed anything else to hydrate
As for the lines on my face—a parting gift from 2020–they didn’t vanish but my skin did look noticeably plumped up
which is all I can ask for in the absence of needles
Before and after my two-minute at-home spa break with the FOREO UFO 2
I would probably opt for unscented masks if they were on offer—the powerful ingredients in each mask speak for themselves!—but I get that the vibe is meant to mimic a Swedish facial at a luxe spa
the entire experience is simple and delightful and I plan on working the FOREO UFO 2 and its companion masks into my routine regularly
for example: the “Call It a Night” treatment

defied all odds as an orphaned survivor of the Warsaw ghetto to become a successful businesswoman possessed of a rare joie de vivre and generosity of spirit
For more than 40 years, she distinguished herself in business with her firm Thelma Koorland Caterers, which she started in 1963 in Cape Town, South Africa
She employed hundreds of people, many of whom were inspired by her dedication to her clients. Talmy herself had nearly starved as a small child with rickets in her native Poland during the German invasion that sparked the second world war
This small photograph survived only because it was sent in a letter to South Africa before September 1939Born in Łódź
she was the only child of Asia (nee Rudzka)
Talmy was smuggled out of Warsaw to be hidden in a safe house until 1946
when she was sent first to relatives in Paris
to be adopted by her great-aunt Rachel Gilinsky
she was sent to board at the Huguenot girls high school in Wellington
and I stayed in Cape Town to finish my degree
In spite of the violence she experienced during the war
Talmy was nonetheless the recipient of much kindness
and it was her mission to do the same for people in need
and they divorced the following year; he died in 1995
it feels like almost everyone's heard the spicier details of Prince Harry's book
Harry spilled on his R-rated usage for a cult beauty product
and we decided to put the cream to the test — but for its actual
The Duke of Sussex's little soldier has been the talk of the town after the Prince shared a story about the time he got frostbite on a trip to the North Pole — on his South Pole
Harry, who was underprepared for the trip, weathered a terrible storm in his pants, and on the recommendation of a friend, turned to an Elizabeth Arden cream his mother had loved
"My mum used that on her lips," he wrote, horrified, in his book
"You want me to put that on my todger?"
"I found a tube, and the minute I opened it the smell transported me through time," he said.
"I felt as if my mother was right there in the room. Then I took a smidge and applied it … down there."
Harry joked that his dilemma was "softened" by the cream.
Sales of the product have soared 60 percent
according to the British pharmacy store Boots
News about this miracle product seemed to have traveled across the sea to the US
as acquiring the cream in New York proved to be no easy task — it took perusing multiple sites and an in-person pickup to get it in my hands
The Elizabeth Arden site states that there are eight uses for the cream
I knocked out two birds with one stone on a particularly frosty evening
the pungent smell Harry had mentioned that "transported" him
While I'm not sure how I feel about knowing the scent that the Prince carried in his pants
familiar: citrusy and reminiscent of a mix between a diffuser-filled Muji store and the kind of perfumes worn by Grandma
burned hands: it proved to be worth the $30 price tag
although I'm sure the steep bill was no object for the Royal's pain relief
I was also surprised to see a formulation closer to a gel-like oil (despite almost 60 percent petrolatum in its ingredients)
which dried down quickly and left my hands looking and feeling moisturized
was bitter and could have been improved upon
but I could definitely see why Princess Diana used it on her lips
Next came the hair test on flyaways: I don't think the cream did much for my baby hairs except make them look greasy so it's a pass from me
I was doubtful of the cream's abilities as a highlighter
the cream gave me a subtle glow that made me look dewy from within
My final thoughts: While I do think the now-infamous Elizabeth Arden cream is a decent moisturizer and windburn solution as advertised
I wouldn't use it on my own Spare parts
KATE Nash has admitted she is devastated following the news that Netflix series Glow has been cancelled
Kate, 33, took to Twitter on Tuesday to express her sadness after Netflix confirmed the female wrestling show would be no more.
Posting a comical picture of herself crying, the London-born singer wrote alongside it: "Glow is cancelled due to Covid cuts. 20f**kin20 punch to the heart 10 times," followed by a broken heart emoji.
"We had scripts, we had costumes, we had stages," Kate added.
The Foundations hitmaker played the role of Rhonda 'Britannica' Richardson on the popular show - which first dropped on Netflix in June 2017.
Glow is a fictionalised version of the real-life Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling promotion in the 1980s and a fourth and final season of the hit comedy-drama had already been commissioned.
Fans were just as gutted by the news, with many replying to Kate's tweet.
"so sorry Kate - it was such a good watch," one person wrote, while another added: "I am so sad, GLOW is amazing and I really was looking forward for the next season."
A third person replied: "I'm so sorry for you and the cast and crew but also for those of us who fell in love with the show and the legacy of women's wrestling that was partially created with the real GLOW."
Series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch said in a statement to Deadline: "Covid has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus.
"Covid also apparently took down our show. Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW.
"We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone.
"There’s a lot of s**tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again."
They continued: "We'll miss our cast of weirdo clowns and our heroic crew. It was the best job."
Netflix added: "We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to Covid, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging.
cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world."
They continued: "It is said that the fourth series had already got one episode in the bag after filming for around three weeks prior to lockdown in March."

François Ozon's fervent and well-acted drama about a 17-year-old girl exploring her sexuality by becoming a high-class call girl is very watchable … and entirely ridiculous. It has a stylish gloss and sexy glow, no doubt about it. Only French cinema could get away with it.
Yet once the credits roll, its essential absurdity and obtuseness become apparent: it's a solemn belle de jour tale with a touch of David Hamilton softcore, existing outside the grim reality of vulnerable women being abused and trafficked.
Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue Is the Warmest Colour was attacked as a movie for middle-aged men; that charge could be made far more powerfully against Jeune & Jolie.
Somewhere LyricsWe speak but the words we say mean nothingWe smile but the smiles we give are wantingWe look upon each other's eyesNo spark
no real signsBut we both know this is all for showUntil that sometime
somewhereWe could show the world we have each otherSometime
somewhere we need not hide our feelingsWe just keep on believing that we both have the time togetherSometime and somewhere
our lips would be free at lastYou say the words we've hungered to sayAnd we won't have to worry
we smile we won't say sorryOne look and we have cast our fears asideSometime
our somewhere would not just be one placeBut everywhereUntil that sometime
somewhereWe just have to be content with stealing glancesSomehow
content with saying nothingSmiles are always wantingThough deep inside it hurtsBecause we know that our love
like love we'll have to waitUntil that sometime
