Israel and Ida Rubin and their son Tulek were deported to their deaths at Auschwitz
Rutka and Macia – were deported from the Sosnowiec ghetto to Auschwitz
Rutka and Macia were murdered in the gas chambers on arrival
Mila and Bronia passed the selection and were imprisoned in the camp
Mila was murdered several months later; Bronia survived Auschwitz and other camps
Rutka and Macia Rubin are documented in the Book of Names
six of the 4,800,000 names of Holocaust victims that have been collected by Yad Vashem and are commemorated in this monumental installation
the fourth child of Israel and Ida (née Mandelbaum)
Bronia was eight years old when World War II broke out
In an attempt to protect the family from the German onslaught
Israel sent Ida and five of the children to Mielec
Israel remained in Jaworzno with his eldest son
threatening voices – just to hear those voices made your blood curdle
We knew that life would never be the same," Bronia recalls
Bronia remembers the utter hatred and antisemitism they experienced
the slurs and insults the invading army used when referring to the Jews of Mielec
and how they were so brutally treated: "When the Germans marched into Mielec
they burst into the homes of the Jews and made us go out in our nightgowns
many of the men were marched to the synagogue and burned alive." After a while
her mother and siblings returned home to Jaworzno
Bronia and her family were able to stay in their home
but their store was confiscated along with all of their money
Bronia was forced to smuggle goods her father could sell on the black market in order to buy some basic provisions:
I would cover up my "Jewish" armband with a big shawl and go on my mission
I was almost certain I wouldn't return home
but not before I would have been tortured to reveal the names of my network contacts
because one never knew what was going to happen
Often you had to make split-second decisions
and you didn't always make the right choice
We could never have prepared for the challenges that would come
and her parents were taken to the synagogue to be deported
Her other siblings reached their hiding places in time
"If I had been caught running away I would have been shot right in front of her
but that was the risk she took." Instead of running
Bronia decided to inch her way slowly out of the synagogue
where she begged to be hidden until nightfall
Realizing that her parents and brother were not likely to return
Bronia and her sisters decided to flee to Sosnowiec
a town nearby where they heard there were still Jews
"None of us mourned that our parents were certainly going to be murdered
I think that that was the moment when something inside of us died
We couldn't grieve because we ourselves were dealing with the unknown." In Sosnowiec
Bronia continued to smuggle food for her siblings
the Nazis began to liquidate the Sosnowiec ghetto
The residents were rounded up and sent away
were discovered during one of the Aktionen and deported to Auschwitz
"We knew we were being taken to our deaths and no one said a word," Bronia recalls of the harrowing train ride to the extermination camp
This is how we were greeted upon our arrival at Auschwitz
We were told to leave all our belongings behind
We were terrified and powerless." At the selection
Mila was directed to the right while Bronia and her sisters were told to go to the left
"In another split-second decision I decided to run to the line where Mila stood
having a young twelve-year-old girl next to her
Bronia and Mila were taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau
their hair shaven and arms tattooed with their prisoner numbers
a pair of wooden clogs and an equally valuable possession
The sisters were assigned together to one of the barracks
but it always began by being woken up very early in the morning..
we were made to stand for roll call sometimes for hours on end
the prisoners were marched to forced labor
Work was not meant to be productive in Auschwitz
How can I describe being hungry for two years
What we got could not be considered food or eating
What we consumed was meant to keep us barely alive another day
In addition to the constant hunger and fear of death
Our bodies were one big scab from scratching all the time
As a result of these subhuman living conditions
Mila came down with typhus and was sent to the infirmary
Everyone in the camp knew that going to those barracks was a one-way ticket to the gas chambers
Bronia chose to go with her sister to the infirmary
told me that the next day all of the infirm were going to be taken to the gas chambers," Bronia recalls
"That nurse risked her life in order to save mine
I felt so guilty not going with Mila that I believed I didn’t deserve to live." The next day
and Bozenka cared for her even when the young girl was in a coma for nearly a month
Bronia remained at Auschwitz until January 1945
Bronia was supported by Bozenka on the march to the Ravensbrück concentration camp
Bozenka and Bronia were forced onward to the Neustadt-Glewe camp
they were liberated by the Red Army at the beginning of May 1945
Bronia recalls liberation as the worst time of her life
Mendek and Bronia immigrated to the United States in 1950
with whom she had two daughters and built a family life in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn
Bronia Rubin-Brandman didn't talk about her wartime nightmare
refusing to tell her family what she had endured during the Holocaust
when she began volunteering at the New York Museum of Jewish Heritage and one of the visitors noticed the tattoo on her arm
Bronia begin to tell the harrowing story of how she and her older brother
were the only members of her immediate family to survive
working tirelessly to ensure that people all over the world know of the unprecedented atrocities of the Shoah
In 2005 and 2011 Bronia submitted 34 Pages of Testimony to Yad Vashem bearing the names of her beloved family members who were murdered during the Holocaust; names that are commemorated in Yad Vashem's Book of Names
The Holocaust touches me in a very deep way
The Nazis left me without any tears; the enormity of the devastation
of the deliberate and planned murder of six million innocent people
The fact that there is a Book of Names of so many of these victims ensures that when the last Holocaust survivor dies
our story will remain for humanity to know and remember
The Book will continue to be a testimony to our lives as survivors
as well as to the victims – who lived and breathed like my parents
Each of them had their own unique identity
Poland’s first electric car plant will be built in the town of Jaworzno in the south of the country
The groundbreaking ceremony for the factory is scheduled for next year
ElectroMobility Poland (EMP) presented two electric car prototypes to be produced
EMP had analysed around 30 locations in Poland for their suitability in the run-up to the decision
With a memorandum of understanding now signed by Environment Minister Michał Kurtyka
and officials at the local and regional levels
the factory construction is now taking place in Jaworzno
EMP says that the choice and the government’s financial support for the project will make it possible to start the investment in autumn 2021
the originally targeted start of production in 2023 proved to be too ambitious
the assembly lines in Jaworzno should start rolling in 2024
the company has not revealed details yet on the planned production capacities but around 15,000 jobs have been announced
including 3,000 at the plant itself and 12,000 with suppliers and subcontractors
ElectroMobility Poland is owned by the state-owned energy groups PGE, Tauron, Enea and Energa. The company is also the developer of the Izera, the future Polish electric car, which, as was said at the presentation of the first two prototypes
is to be based as far as possible on components from Polish suppliers
although this will probably only be possible to a limited extent
is the responsibility of the German company EDAG
The vehicle will also use the existing electric car platform of an as-yet-unnamed manufacturer
EMP announced two battery variants with 40 and 60 kWh
The car is to be able to charge to 80 per cent in 30 minutes at a corresponding fast-charging station
and the manufacturer states that the expected range is 400 kilometres
The next prototypes shown were a compact car and an SUV

When and why did you start using the medium
I have been interested in photography for about 10 years
From the beginning I have been interested in photojournalism because I believe people in the pictures are most important for me
At the beginning I photographed football matches
After that I started to photograph local events in Jaworzno
There is something magic in freezing time in a single frame

USC Shoah Foundation worked closely with The Survivor team to bring the important film to the screen and received a production credit
Assistance included providing access to Haft’s and other survivors’ testimonies in the Visual History Archive
and consulting with the producers to ensure historical accuracy
Crispin Brooks is curator of the Visual History Archive and over the years has played a key role in archiving its testimonies
He is also immersed in Eastern European studies
He spoke to us about consulting on The Survivor
What did the consultation process on The Survivor film involve
we reviewed and commented on an early version of the script
then researched our Visual History Archive to identify testimonies relating to the Jaworzno (Neudachs) labor camp [a subcamp of Auschwitz] where Harry Haft was a prisoner for much of the war
The VHA contains over 200 testimonies in multiple languages about Jaworzno
and we shared copies of many of these so that their team could learn from the testimonies of people who were there
Matti and his team would come to me with various questions—
What sort of instruments would have been played in the camp and what sort of music
Is there any information about the hospital at Jaworzno
How did prisoners get to and from the mines
Was it possible for prisoners to wheel coal from the mines out to the trains
I was able to answer all of these by delving into our testimonies
Matti asked for quotes from the testimonies that he would attach to the film crew’s daily Call Sheets to remind them of the realities of what they were filming
What were some of the main challenges [in ensuring the historical accuracy of the film]
[As with any creative project like this] there was some back and forth about some historical details in the earlier versions of the script
We identified and discussed these at length
and they were resolved before the final cut
It was fascinating to dig into the many testimonies we have on Jaworzno
And because the testimonies are in multiple languages
I received invaluable help from my colleagues
in particular Ita Gordon (Portuguese) and Laurence Slama (Hebrew)
What are special considerations to take in addressing historical accuracy in filmic treatments of personal stories
It’s always a challenge for filmmakers to balance historical accuracy with dramatic needs
the volume of testimonies we have on Jaworzno really made it possible to provide very accurate information about the camp
primary] sources are not always simple to work with
there are two testimonies by Haft himself—one is at USHMM
the other is in our VHA—and there’s also a memoir about him
[These three sources are not all the same in that they] tell things slightly differently
Building both an accurate and compelling script and film narrative from them was no easy task
Our own Jayne Perilstein, Director of Community Outreach, attended a special White House screening of the film

polish architect mateusz tanski was chosen to design a new sports complex in the former sadowa góra quarry in poland which will consist of a stadium (the rock)
the plot was selected as the location of the complex due to its rich landscape filled with geological treasures and particularities that represent the history of the region
the magnificent area with its characteristic stone excavation walls became a reference point for designing the stadium
the supplementary hotel and recreation facility
the characteristic component of the entire development is the dynamic shape of the buildings and its roof
the track and field stadium is located in the central part of the plot
the only structure accompanying the stadium consists of the stands that contain 1000 seats
the facility is located between the running track and the access road
ensuring that the sports events taking place in the area will not be interrupted by vehicle traffic
as well as the quarry walls in its background
this allows each participant to admire the magnificent nature of the former quarry
the proposed architecture will be well incorporated into its surrounding by reflecting the walls of the quarry
from the side of the access road and the area in front of the stadium entrance
it resembles a wide block of rocks where all the necessary infrastructure components were developed
they resemble the rocky formations around them by means of their form and the used façade material
their urban arrangement makes the buildings look like boulders which are scattered on the bottom of the quarry and covered with the local greenery
the characteristic component of the entire development is the dynamic shape of the building and the multi-hipped roof covering them
despite the difference in function and the scale of particular facilities
the designed buildings remain visually consistent
six free-standing buildings were designed with the built-up area of 4200m2
features an extensive hotel and restaurant
the designed facilities will allow the organization of accompanying events for sports competitions
various types of training camps for children and adults as well as school trips due to its proximity to the geological education centre.

Solaris has just signed a contract with operator PKM Jaworzno for the supply of 6 Solaris Urbino 18 electric buses
The vehicles will hit the streets of Jaworzno within one year of the contract being signed
Jaworzno was the first town in Poland to put an e-bus
electric vehicles will make up 80% of the operator’s fleet
the buses will be equipped with Solaris High Energy batteries boasting a total capacity of over 280 kWh
and at the heart of the drive will be an electric axle
Just as with the vehicles already used by the operator
the new buses will be charged both by means of pantograph chargers and conventional charging sockets
The operator also has opted for hybrid heating
Solaris and PKM Jaworzno have been continuously collaborating for 20 years
Jaworzno is not the only Polish town to be investing in the development of environmentally friendly public transport
nearly 600 e-buses have been ordered by domestic operators
with over 400 units already having been delivered
Orders placed by Polish operators account for almost 40% of all electric contracts signed by Solaris
According to a report published by the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) entitled “How to support e-mobility”
Poland will have the third-biggest fleet of electric buses in Europe
“We are truly proud to observe such towns as Jaworzno that
have been consistently showing that e-mobility is the right direction
This new order for electric Solaris bus models
is the best proof of the satisfactory performance of our e-buses and the positive experiences it had over many years of their operation”
member of the Management Board of Solaris for Sales
who was also present at the contract signing
“Emission-free vehicles are a natural phase in the transformation of public transport
We all need solutions to be as green as possible
which has demonstrated its technological effectiveness over many years
I am really glad not only to be the pioneer in Poland when it comes to operating an electric fleet
but also to be able to transform the fleet successfully as this change is expected by passengers
is beneficial for the environment and ensures Jaworzno‘s status as a modern town”
The Municipal Transport Company (PKM) from the Polish city of Jaworzno is buying 20 additional electric buses and has awarded the contract to Solaris
The contract provides for the delivery of 15 Urbino 12 electric and five low-floor Urbino 8.9 LE electric
++ There’s been an update to this article
According to the Polish electric bus company
with the delivery of the latest order of electric buses
Solaris electric buses will make up 80 per cent of the fleet in Jaworznom
Solaris delivered the first 23 electric buses to Jaworzno in 2015
the 9-metre long Solaris buses will be handed over to the customer before the end of this year
The 12-metre buses will follow in the first half of 2021
The PKM Jaworzno fleet will then number 43 electric buses
all vehicles now ordered will be equipped with a 160 kWh battery
The buses will be charged either by cable in the depot or on the road using a pantograph (charging power up to 190 kW)
Both the 9- and 12-metre buses are driven by a 160 kW central motor
The bus depot in Jaworzno referred to in the Solaris press release as the “Electric Mobility Centre”
is touted as one of the most modern depots in Europe
the operator intends to purchase another five pantograph charging stations and ten plug-in charging stations for the depot
While the Urbino 8.9 LE can accommodate 55 passengers
the Urbino 12 electric can carry up to 75 passengers
both models have comfort features such as USB charging sockets or a WLAN network
Even more passengers can be transported by the Urbino 18 electric articulated, ordered by the local public transport operator in Warsaw last year
Each of the 130 electric buses can carry up to 133 passengers
The first of the articulated battery-electric buses recently started regular service in the Polish capital
Incidentally, the Polish manufacturer Solaris intends to deliver more than 500 ordered battery-electric buses this year
The proportion of electrified buses is rising steadily – and with it their importance for the entire company
The higher proportion of electrified buses is also reflected in turnover: While sales rose by only 21 per cent compared to 2018 (1,226 buses)
turnover in 2019 increased by 39 per cent – to 2.604 billion Polish zlotych
Following the above orders from the city of Jaworzno
the local public transport operator PKM again wants to grow its e-bus fleet
the company asked Solaris to deliver six Urbino 18 electric
The batteries boast a total capacity of over 280 kWh
and at the heart of the drive will be the usual electric axle
Just as with the vehicles already used by the operator
the new buses will be charged both utilizing pantograph chargers and conventional charging sockets
The articulated e-buses will hit the streets of Jaworzno within one year of the contract being signed
Taking into account the delivery of a total of 43 e-buses from previous orders
PKM now runs 80 per cent of its fleet electrically
“This is a phenomenon on a European scale
an example of just how to deploy e-mobility in towns with up to 100,000 inhabitants,” Solaris said
orders placed by Polish operators now account for almost 40% of all-electric contracts signed by Solaris
The company also quotes a report published by the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) entitled ‘How to support e-mobility’ that sees Poland having the third-biggest fleet of electric buses in Europe by 2025

Today the city of Jaworzno in Poland will start testing the Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen bus
Local transport operator PKM Jaworzno wants to learn all about what the deployment of hydrogen has to offer in urban transport
Operator PKM Jaworzno and Solaris Bus & Coach have been continuously collaborating for 21 years now
over 80 Urbino buses sporting the operator’s distinctive colours have been […]
over 80 Urbino buses sporting the operator’s distinctive colours have been plying the streets of the city
of which over half are zero-emission electric vehicles
the company will be operating a staggering 50 e-buses
PKM Jaworzno has been introducing various innovations
which are then later eagerly taken up by other towns and cities
Wi-Fi Internet and USB charging ports are already standard equipment for the carrier’s fleet
Positive experiences with the mass operation of buses that use new drive technology have contributed to the rapid development of e-mobility in Poland
One electric bus in Jaworzno drives up to 100,000 km yearly and provides passenger transport services of up to 400 km daily
vehicles of this type have already covered over 11 million kilometres in total
having proved that with suitable traction battery capacities
and an appropriate number of charging stations
an e-bus may successfully replace a diesel bus in service
Jaworzno will be able to gain invaluable experience regarding the use of this advanced technology
The test’s aim is to determine real-world hydrogen consumption during intensive operation of the bus with passengers on board
as well as to estimate the necessary frequency and time of refuelling
The vehicle’s behaviour in low temperatures will also be tested
The trials will show if this technology can be applied in future as the next step in the development of completely green public transport
on the most commonly used routes in Jaworzno
connecting the largest residential districts of the city
This will provide numerous possibilities to travel on this unique vehicle and to learn more about hydrogen technology
Hydrogen refilling will take place at a mobile station run by industrial company AirProducts
“I was very glad to hear that the possibilities of this state-of-the-art vehicle will be put on trial in Jaworzno
a city which is an excellent example of the successful implementation of e-mobility in public transport
which will enable the city to thoroughly acquaint itself with all the functionalities that the Urbino 12 hydrogen offers for everyday urban traffic
Let us recall that Jaworzno was a trailblazer when it comes to fleet electrification in Poland and it is even by European standards
it has a chance to become a leader in hydrogen technology
another advanced technology for the zero-emission transport of the future
I believe that today nobody doubts any more that in the modern world hydrogen is one of the key pillars in public transport’s transformation,” said Petros Spinaris
member of the Management Board of Solaris Bus & Coach sp
“It is very important to us that Jaworzno be perceived as a place that supports new technologies and is open to investors and new residents
Efficient public transport is a pivotal aspect when it comes to the functioning of the urban organism
According to regularly conducted public opinion surveys
local residents appreciate the high quality of our transport services
Over 80 percent of the city’s inhabitants use public transport and 88 percent approve of the introduction and development of the local electric vehicle fleet,” says Paweł Silbert
“Our company’s first e-bus is already 7 years old
We constantly need to remember to renew our vehicle fleet and are looking for the most efficient technologies in this regard
We hope that the experience gathered during the trials will enable us to successfully apply for external funding for further fleet modernisation
we will be the first to announce a date as of which a large city
will no longer be served by diesel buses,” notes Zbigniew Nosal
The production of Poland’s first electric car is delayed
The state-owned company ElectroMobility Poland (EMP) has now confirmed that production of the Izera brand of electric cars will not start until the end of 2025
EMP made this statement to the German publication Automobilwoche
The state-owned company has also confirmed that construction of the factory in Jaworzno is now scheduled to begin in early 2024
ElectroMobility Poland did not provide any further details
Originally, production was supposed to start in 2024
It is not known why the start of construction and production is now delayed
Problems with the approval or financing of the project are possible
but of course also with the development of the vehicle: EMP had only confirmed in November 2022 that the Izera would be based on Geely’s SEA platform
Since this cooperation was only decided in November 2022
even with a complete takeover of Geely’s technology
sufficiently test the vehicles for a production start in 2024 – and still prepare for production
EMP has only secured the licence to build vehicles based on the SEA
So EMP still has to organise component production together with suppliers
this was to be done primarily with Polish suppliers in order to increase domestic added value – after all
EMP was founded with the aim of compensating for declining passenger car production in Poland
As “Automobilwoche” now writes
German companies will also benefit from the approximately 1.1 billion euro investment volume: Dürr is responsible for planning and building the production facilities
EMP intends to rely “heavily on local suppliers” in addition to the plant manufacturer from Baden-Württemberg
A number of suppliers have indeed settled around the ex-Opel plant in Gliwice (formerly Astra
the small car plant in Tychy and also the Mercedes site in Jawor (including combustion engines
these are “often subsidiaries of western suppliers”

In a joint project with Impact Clean Power Technology and TAURON Polska Energia
Polish electric bus manufacturer Solaris is exploring the secondary use of lithium-ion cells as energy storage devices in stationary applications
For the construction of the prototype system
which will be built as part of the ‘Second Life ESS’ project
Solaris will hand over batteries with a nominal capacity of 160 kWh used in the electric bus of operator PKM Jaworzno
PKM Jaworzno was one of Poland’s first public transport operators to rely on electric buses – today
23 e-buses are on the road with 20 more ordered in spring 2020
Solaris says that the first electric buses they delivered in 2011 have now covered more than half a million kilometres
the batteries need to be replaced after this mileage
a battery in an electric bus is considered worn out when its capacity falls below 80 per cent,” says Łukasz Chełchowski
director of Solaris’ development office
it is still perfectly suitable to be reused as energy storage in stationary applications.”
That is exactly what the batteries in the project will be used to test
They will be used both as buffers for renewable energy and to stabilise power grids
Solaris says that the development and construction of the test facility are expected to be completed by 2022
called ‘Second Life ESS,’ is being implemented in cooperation with the National Center for Research and Development (NCBiR)
Work on the development of the prototype system is scheduled for completion in 2022

Jeff Hanneman's Circle Pit can be found in the city of Jaworzno
A roundabout in Jaworzno, Poland has been named in honour of Slayer‘s late guitar player and co-founder Jeff Hanneman
2013 at the age of 49 from cirrhosis of the liver
The roundabout will be known as Jeff Hanneman’s Circle Pit for a whole year after a company called ART-COM Ltd won a charity auction to rename and ‘symbolically own’ the roundabout for 12 months, reports Spin
Earlier this week former Slayer member Dave Lombardo spoke about the fact that Hanneman was not included in the Grammy Awards’ ‘in memoriam’ segment, dedicated to musicians who had passed away over the past 12 months. Speaking to Metal Wani
Lombardo commented: “It was disappointing
That organisation is predominately rap and country driven
They don’t care about rock and metal
I think is music for misfits and it is played by misfits… We don’t need anyone
metal doesn’t need anyone or an organisation to recognise who we are
Slayer will perform at Sonisphere 2014. The Knebworth bash was cancelled in 2013 and 2012 but returns this year with Iron Maiden and Metallica making their only UK festival appearances at the event. The Prodigy will headline the event on Friday
Joining them on the bill will be Alice In Chains, Mastodon
Sonisphere 2014 will take place in Knebworth Park between July 4 and 6
Early bird tickets for the festival are available now priced £170

TWO small rural schools in the Killarney area are to receive funding to participate in an EU Programme aimed at supporting education
will be participating in the innovative Erasmus + Programme
Both schools have teamed up with a school from a town called Jaworzno
for the project which is titled I’m a Super Duper Healthy Trooper and the duration of the initiative is two years
The aim is to encourage children to examine aspects of their lives and try to make changes to their lifestyles that will have a lifelong impact
The schools involved will hope to achieve this by getting children
teachers and parents to examine their diets
was impressed by the application as the schools aim to foster autonomy in all their pupils where they will learn and practice how to look after their minds and bodies
The children will keep a diary for the duration of the two-year project and that will help them to evaluate their progress
They will also learn about each other’s countries
The school from Poland is in a town called Jaworzno
Principal of Glenflesk National School Paul Favier said it’s a great opportunity for two small rural schools in Kerry to be involved at European level
“We look forward to sharing experiences with our partners in Poland
learning from each other and making lots of new friends along the way,” he added
remarked: “The most exciting part of the project for the children will be when the pupils get to visit each other’s schools two years in a row”
Fifth and sixth class pupils from Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS will travel to Poland in May 2020 and again in May 2021 for five days to meet their counterparts in Poland
The students from Poland will also visit Killarney to spend time in Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS
