was a cheerleader and dabbled in gymnastics Mike Kalisz had the makings of a track and field decathlete as he broke 2 minutes in the half-mile and cleared 6-7 in the high jump before a knee injury derailed his basketball aspirations after 30 years as the athletic director at Hereford High The Bulls won 58 state titles during his tenure in which all four of their children reached the Olympic Trials was the last thing he expected them to pursue “Three of the four failed the Red Cross’ introduction to swimming,” Mike Kalisz said “Chase would not put his face in the water and his first coach took to dropping coins in the pool to make him go under.” Courtney Kalisz reached the Trials as a 14-year-old They moved from a fledgling swim club in Bel Air to the NBAC but their routine was jolted in the winter of 2002-03 when Chase was literally knocked to his knees by Guillain-Barré syndrome the rare neurological disorder causes muscle weakness and paralysis Kalisz spent a week in a medically induced coma and two weeks on a ventilator “There was a lot that I don’t remember,” he said “There’s a lot of just laying in a hospital bed Phelps was known for his rapid recovery between events as he halved the prescribed times in intensive care and a pediatric hospital and Kalisz is piling up laps at the Eddie Reese Outdoor Pool adjacent to the arena inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center he was maintaining his fitness and form in Tempe Days after guiding the Sun Devils to their first NCAA title succeeding the retiring Reese and sending a seismic jolt through the sport Multiple Olympic medal favorites followed Bowman from Tempe to Austin a 22-year-old Frenchman who last summer obliterated the longest-standing world record in the history of the sport Phelps went 4:03.84 in the 400 IM at the 2008 Olympics Marchand dipped to 4:02.50 at the 2023 world championships “This is probably the most medal production I’ve seen [at practice] but I’ve always trained in supergroups,” Kalisz said I got thrown in the fire with the greatest Olympian of all time.” when Phelps and Bowman returned to Baltimore after an Olympic training cycle at the University of Michigan that produced eight gold medals but his focus narrowed once he entered Fallston High School and began “shipping off to Meadowbrook for morning workouts before school.” “It was pretty hard to not embrace that,” Kalisz said Getting to learn from the greatest of all Olympians “I ran into roadblocks early and was able to bust right through them because I had the guidance from Bob and Michael made his Olympic Trials debut and headed to the University of Georgia where coach Jack Bauerle was among Bowman’s closest colleagues Their collaboration helped Allison Schmitt win three gold medals at the 2012 Olympics and provided a template for Kalisz who spent most of May at Bowman’s altitude camp in Colorado Springs “My crazy ADHD mind is all over the place,” Kalisz said and Kalisz has always had a soft spot for the capital city Kalisz defended his 400 IM title and broke the American short-course record that performance remains on the banner displaying pool records Kalisz took a redshirt year to train with Phelps and Bowman at Arizona State before the 2016 Olympics “Nothing could go wrong in 2017,” Kalisz said but the Olympics were still three years off Kalisz fought through injuries to get to Tokyo — an asterisk-laden Games officially known as the 2020 Olympics even though they were held in 2021 — where he won the gold medal in 4:09.42 thanks to mileage that would crush others his age “He’s willing to do the work and knows he needs to do it,” Bowman said The only way to do that is go up and down that pool Before he was on a first-name basis with Phelps Kalisz was getting fan mail from the American voice of the sport Keepsakes from that ordeal with Guillain-Barré — of which there have been no recurrences — include an autographed photo from Rowdy Gaines the NBC analyst who was in his early 30s when he had his own bout with the syndrome “I was just some little kid who had the same disease that he had I’ll always be appreciative of what he did for me.” as Gaines has witnessed Kalisz’s uncommon longevity which includes a streak of U.S teams at international meets second only to Katie Ledecky “It’s why I most admire Chase,” Gaines said “Leon Marchand is not going to be swimming the 400 IM at age 30 there comes a point where it has to be taken out of the repertoire For Chase to have that still be your best event at 30 Kalisz’s awareness of his body’s need and his craft have helped him go under 4:10 at least 17 times when a 4:08.22 got him a spot in the 2023 world championships when the last of his 23 gold medals included one in the 200 IM the shorter version of the event that involves shifting gears from the butterfly to backstroke to breaststroke to freestyle but a wavering focus kept him off the medal podium in that event in 2012 No man has ever medaled three times in the event The 2016 Olympics were the only Games since 1992 in which the U.S history that Kalisz referenced after his Tokyo gold because pandemic precautions meant no spectators in Tokyo His mom was among the American parents who took up NBC’s invitation to attend a viewing party in Orlando mindful of the prohibitive cost of Paris and the fact this might be the last chance to see Chase compete in person The Trials will be held in a temporary pool at Lucas Oil Stadium and the biggest crowds in swim history are anticipated “It will be nice to return to a normal situation,” said Kalisz Swimming World magazine has Kalisz among the favorites to grab one of the two Olympic berths in the 400 IM behind Carson Foster who was second to Marchand at each of the last two world championships Foster led the Trials until being passed by Kalisz and Jay Litherland Whoever comes out of the Trials will be in position to medal in Paris His status is such that Bowman will be on the France coaching staff know “we’re prepared for these types of situations.” Kalisz earned a sports management degree at Georgia He has endorsement deals with Delta Airlines a pet food company that’s featured Kalisz and Floyd Kalisz’s own appetite is whetted by one more U.S Trials and the prospect of an Olympics in Paris Bob will tell you I act like I’m 22,” Kalisz said “I still wake up every Kalisz formerly served as a city council member and will be taking over for Tim Bishop who will be stepping down after 13 years in the position Kalisz says that she plans to bring a new vision to Davison using her experience as a council member Four faculty members at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have been elected 2024 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science AAAS Fellows are elected to a lifetime appointment annually by their peers on the AAAS Council in recognition of their extraordinary achievements Elected faculty are Professor Albrecht von Arnim of the Department of Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology; Alison Buchan Fite Professor and associate head of the Department of Microbiology; Research Professor Susan Kalisz of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; and Herbert College of Agriculture Dean and Professor David G “Our newly elected AAAS Fellows help ensure UT remains a world-class research university through their pioneering work,” said Deborah Crawford “Every day they are redefining how to tackle big problems with creativity and innovation as well as educating and mentoring our next generation of groundbreaking scientists.” How cells in plants build proteins is the foundation for many branches of research helping scientists to optimize crop yields and improve the quality of food for humans and livestock Albrecht von Arnim, a professor in UT’s Department of Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology has spent his career researching how cells and organisms synthesize thousands of different proteins “This really underpins everything an organism does and that is important to us,” von Arnim said the ribosome — the machine in the cell where protein synthesis takes place — is very fascinating because all life on earth depends on it.” von Arnim studies how plants can adjust the way they synthesize their various proteins in response to variable environmental conditions His lab was the first to publish a paper on the effects of the circadian clock on protein synthesis “Protein synthesis is a very energy-intensive process and therefore needs to be carefully regulated — where it’s made “Our work on plants complemented similar work in animals Because food intake directly regulates protein synthesis this work explains why it not only matters how many calories we take up or from what kinds of foods is scientifically important from agriculture to nutrition but von Arnim said his teaching has also been quite rewarding For 14 years von Arnim led the Genome Science and Technology program which operates jointly between UT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory program focuses on decoding the complexity of genomes to advance the understanding of life from microorganisms to more complex biological systems and to tackle fundamental problems that impact the health and well-being of individuals and the environment “Genome science is a topic that resonated with my research expertise at the time when the program was founded in 1998,” said von Arnim “Genomics was an emerging discipline at the time but it was clear that genomics was going to guide and drive life science for the next decades.” Marine microbes — most of which are good bacteria that are abundant and active in the world’s oceans — are critical to keeping the earth functioning and could hold the key to everything from antibiotic resistance to breaking down manufactured pollutants that can be toxic in high concentrations Alison Buchan, the Carolyn W. Fite Professor and associate head of the Department of Microbiology in UT’s College of Arts and Sciences studies the physiology and ecology of these marine microbes which she calls “the workhorses for a lot of the biogeochemical cycles that are critical for Earth’s functioning.” “Biogeochemical cycles are like the earth’s recycling system for essential elements like carbon who cultures and grows these marine microbes in her lab at UT “They ensure these elements are continuously available for plants One aspect of Buchan’s research looks at the way these bacteria are influenced by and interact with the viruses that infect and sometimes kill them The relationships between the viruses and their hosts are far more nuanced than expected with intracellular decision-making leading to one of two outcomes: death of the bacterial cell or harmonious coexistence And these entanglements are likely not unique to marine bacteria and their viruses “We think it is plausible that the interactions we are deciphering are commonplace in the microbial world and may ultimately inform research looking to address the antibiotic resistance crisis,” she said there’s a tremendous amount of research in terms of trying to understand the interactions that bacteria have with their viruses because we’re trying to come up with new and clever ways to deal with microbial pathogens.” Buchan’s research also looks at the way these marine bacteria break down tough materials including the components of woody plants and structurally related synthetic compounds such as those found in some plastics These compounds are not only difficult to break down but can be toxic at high concentrations so understanding how the bacteria are able to both tolerate and degrade contaminants from things like paper production plastic waste and municipal solid waste may ultimately lead to advancements in how we prevent those compounds from accumulating in the environment “What brings me joy is the continual promise of uncovering and identifying new phenomena new things that haven’t been discovered or seen previously,” Buchan said “You think things are going to work one way and they don’t work that way but when something works — either as you expected it to or not as you expected it to — it gives you something else to think about and perhaps changes the way you were originally approaching the question It’s the continual possibility of discovery that’s great.” The health of most plants depends on a mutually beneficial nutritional relationship with the fungi that live in their roots so what happens when stressors like drought heat or invasive species disrupt that partnership Susan Kalisz, a professor emerita and research professor in UT’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology has spent her career investigating the impact of invasive species on native plants her lab conducted a field experiment in a deciduous forest during which she either removed or allowed invasive species so that she could observe their impact on native perennial wildflowers’ fitness jack-in-the-pulpit and Solomon’s seals as the focal species in my research is that they’re really common — plants that most people who have hiked in the Smoky Mountains will have seen,” Kalisz said “These plants have a wide distribution in North America and are important keystone species in the understory (the layer of vegetation beneath the main canopy of a forest) as sources of food for pollinators and beauty for humans.” phosphorus and nitrogen from the fungi that extend their hyphae into the soil and function like additional roots for the plant while the plant is the sole source of carbon that these beneficial fungi need for growth But chemicals produced by some invasive plants that protect them from fungal and bacterial diseases in their native lands can have negative effects when they invade foreign soils killing the fungi that are beneficial to native plants and disrupting the critical partnership the plants are starved for these key elements they need for photosynthesis “Understanding how stressors alter this beneficial interaction between plants and fungi is fundamental to understanding the health and viability of both agricultural crops Kalisz previously served as head of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UT president of the American Society of Naturalists a co-leader of two working groups at National Evolution Synthesis Center at Duke University program director in the Division of Environmental Biology at the National Science Foundation The American Naturalist and Journal of Ecology Yet she describes herself as still in as much awe of plants as she was as an undergraduate “I find joy in working with my collaborators to discover how ecological and evolutionary systems work,” Kalisz said “Observing the exquisite nature of plants and how they adapt to diverse environments gives me joy every day.” is a public health concern because it can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can spread to humans David G. White, dean of UT’s Herbert College of Agriculture and a professor of food science has spent his career focusing on the intersections of animal health food safety and human health through a One Health approach One Health recognizes that the health of humans animals and ecosystems are interconnected and is particularly relevant when it comes to addressing an issue like antibiotic resistance where a multidisciplinary approach is needed to combat the global spread “My specific area as a molecular microbiologist was characterizing how bacterial pathogens developed resistance to antimicrobials used in veterinary and human medicine and deciphering potential public health implications,” White explained “A great deal of my work focused on accurately assessing the risks associated with different antimicrobial classes used in food-producing animals and developing coordinated collaborative and cross-sectoral approaches to mitigate spread across multiple ecosystems.” Although White developed “the bug” for research about halfway through his animal science undergraduate program he eventually evolved to translating his research into national and international policy where he had an opportunity to help set global policy for agencies such as the World Health Organization the World Organization for Animal Health and the Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance White is a past member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and currently serves on the WHO Advisory Group on Critically Important Antimicrobials for Human Medicine “Addressing the problem of antimicrobial resistance is a top priority of federal and international health agencies globally and much still needs to be done regarding understanding the factors that drive emergence and spread assessing economic impacts and finding viable mitigation strategies,” he said Asked what brings him joy in his current role at UT White was quick to point to educating the next generation of microbiologists and One Health experts “Established microbiologists are getting older and we need young investigators entering the field to determine both the drivers of emerging antibiotic resistance and what are the most effective measures to mitigate this worldwide problem,” he said “The highly sought magic bullet has still not been discovered and antimicrobial resistance is not likely to go away any time soon so using these miracle drugs as judiciously as possible is the key to minimize negative impacts to both animal and human health.” Erica Estep (865-974-2225, eestep2@utk.edu) Report an accessibility barrier See campus status. 1/39Election Day in Flint Area.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Fuad Shalhout | fshalhout@mlive.comDAVISON MI - Voters in the city of Davison have elected Stacey Kalisz as its new mayor following a race among three candidates on Tuesday marking a significant lead over her opponents Related: Genesee County election results for Nov. 5, 2024 Kalisz’s victory signals a shift in leadership for Davison bringing with her a vision shaped by her experience on the council winning 91.97% of the vote against a write-in candidate who did not represent any specific individual Bunton’s win grants her a clear path to help guide the city alongside Kalisz To view election results in Genesee County, click here Use of and/or registration on any portion of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement, (updated 8/1/2024) and acknowledgement of our Privacy Policy, and Your Privacy Choices and Rights (updated 1/1/2025) © 2025 Advance Local Media LLC. He’ll be chasing a third in Paris, finishing a clear second Sunday to Carson Foster Foster set the fastest time in the world in 2024 at 4:07.64 to get to his first Olympics Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium At no point was Kalisz under pressure from his long-time training partner Foster’s tale Sunday had the edge in emotional content bouncing back from his third-place and faster-than-gold time concurrent with the Olympics in 2021 belies the strength it’s taken him to get here safe-for-mixed-zone version of 2024 from Kalisz: There was an altitude camp that went great and an altitude camp that went terribly There was the move from Arizona to Texas to follow long-time mentor Bob Bowman There was a practice session just 13 days ago when Kalisz did a red-pace set that went so bad he pulled himself from the water “I have days where I’ve swum as fast as I ever have in my entire life at practice,” he said “But I certainly have a lot more days that I swim worse than I ever had in practice The oddity of Kalisz in a Longhorn cap remains and it’s the third cap he’s worn in this Olympic cycle the long-time Georgia Bulldog following Bowman to Arizona State “probably the least affected in the group” by the change “It does suck to kind of get uprooted,” he said “I haven’t been home since the end of February but it’s certainly been an interesting few months.” He said his sprinting is as strong as its ever been but he was displeased with the way he faded late in the race so much so that he dared not push his breaststroke leg too hard for fear of emptying the tank Kalisz is heartened by his tendency through the years to improve from trials meets to finals irrespective of the few obvious changes to make at the moment It’s led him to six medals at World Championships over a span of nearly a decade and now 11 years swimming the 400 IM internationally a period of global relevance that enters increasingly rarefied air with every team he makes That stature brings emotions and responsibility Kalisz shouldered the latter with aplomb in Tokyo as one of the leaders of the team it meant charting the dichotomy that was the exultation of Foster and the disappointment of his good mate Litherland “This is a long time coming for (Carson),” Chase Kalisz said “I know he had a hard time the last Olympics and kind of dealing with that and he’s grown so much since then and really coming to his own It’s only fitting that he came here and got the job done individually and started his meet off with a bang He’s been my training partner for a long And it’s been a real honor to have him as my friend and my training partner for so long.” It’s something that an old hand has come to know well Welcome to our community. reflected in an unforgettable show here crowned with a thunderous standing ovation After the concerts at the Center for Culture and Art the most loyal festival audience moved to the festival club located in the Calisia One complex built on the site of the former Kalisz piano factory There performed Mateusz Kaszuba’s Trio consisting of Mateusz Kaszuba – piano Michał Rutkowski – double bass and Artur Małecki – drums this band was the winner of this year’s Wojtek Siwek Jazz Individuality Competition at the Jazz on the Oder festival in Wroclaw The Saturday (23/11/24) of the festival will undoubtedly remain in the memory of Kalisz music lovers: such an energising festival day has not been seen for years The concert day began with a duo of pianistic individualities – Tania Giannouli and Nik Bärtsch The two musicians have been performing together since 2022 It could be seen that despite presenting completely different styles of expression Nik’s minimalism combining with Tania’s melodiousness The second concert was a musical tribute to the British band performed by the Marta Król and Paweł Tomaszewski’s Group The programme is known to jazz enthusiasts from an album released in 2017 on which the rearrangement of rock hits from the 1970s and 80s for a jazz sextet was undertaken by Paweł Tomaszewski was received in Kalisz with great enthusiasm as great musicians were responsible for the sound: Marta Król – vocals Paweł Tomaszewski – piano and keyboards Mateusz Szewczyk – double bass and bass guitar the main stage was filled with an energising warmth straight from Cuba The band consisted of Alfredo Rodríguez – piano and vocals and is known for its concert spontaneity and expressiveness where the musicians literally picked up the audience from the first song The trio years ago fascinated Quincy Jones who decided to support the Cuban’s original albums with his experience there was no shortage of remembrance of Jones to whom Rodríguez dedicated the rearranged Michael Jackson hit Thriller the most tenacious festival-goers could count on an additional concert at the festival club This time it featured the Hania Derej Quintet led by a pianist considered one of the most promising of the young generation The band featured Hania Derej – piano Kosma Góra – bass and Kuba Długoborski – drums Sunday (24/11/24) began with a concert by the trio of Gdańsk-based composer and pianist Joanna Duda featuring Duda – piano and electronics Maksymilian Mucha – double bass and Michał Bryndal – percussion and electronic effects The trio’s music was filled with a prominent irregular rhythmic structure and melodic conceptualism the compositions remained very clear in reception drawing clear visions and images in the listener’s mind the band had finished their new album and treated the audience to an encore premiering one of its tunes Musicians from Lithuania – the Dainius Pulauskas Acoustic Group – appeared next The group found inspiration in the fusion style which was spiced with the finesse and piano artistry of the leader their own interpretations of Krzysztof Komeda’s works The quintet was Dainius Pulauskas – piano Valerijus Ramoška – trumpet and flugelhorn Liutauras Janušaitis – tenor saxophone and flute Arman Isojan – double bass and Domantas Razmus – drums The finale was the long-awaited concert by the Nduduzo Makhathini Trio The South African-born pianist and composer is an artist associated with the legendary Blue Note label The performance in Kalisz was the only Polish stop on the world tour of this uncommon artist composed of Nduduzo Makhathini – piano Zwelakhe-Duma Bell Le Pere – double bass presented works from this year’s album uNomkhubulwane The concert will undoubtedly be remembered not only as a musical feast More on semifinals of the men’s 200 butterfly after posting the 7th-fastest time of the morning The two-time (soon to be three) Olympian was just about a second over his season best from the San Antonio Pro Swim Series (1:56.71) We’ve already reported on Luke Ellis‘ scratch from the final heat of the men’s 800 free. That moves Ohio’s Charlie Clark into lane 8 He should have swam 200 breast instead of 200 fly More from Laura RosadoSee All Subscribe to our newsletter and receive our latest updates By his own account, three-time Olympic swimmer Chase Kalisz is an old man in a young person’s event As the 30-year-old swimmer looks to defend his 400-meter individual medley Olympic title from the 2021 Tokyo Games especially now in his 11th year competing in arguably the most brutal pool event “I definitely didn't foresee myself here where I am.” The 400 IM requires more physical and mental strategy than just about any other event all-encompassing pain waiting at the finish It’s like four sprint events combined into one merciless race: 100 butterfly 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle in that order everything hurts,' " said two-time Olympian Katie Grimes Kalisz will be joined by trials champ Carson Foster in trying to take down world-record holder and 22-year-old Frenchman Léon Marchand — Kalisz’s training partner who broke Michael Phelps’ last standing individual world record in 2023 it’s 18-year-old Grimes and 22-year-old Emma Weyant Overcoming the mental and physical challenges of the 400 IM comes with training Maintaining focus while doing 100s of all four strokes as your muscles are increasingly burning “is a pretty daunting task,” said Kalisz who trains with Longhorn Aquatics under Phelps’ longtime coach “There’s no way to hide in that race,” Phelps noted in 2016 ahead of the Rio Games Pace work in practice helps with the mental and physical hurdles he’ll swim a difficult main set and then transition to pace work mimicking the race itself “when you're feeling the effects of being broken down and tired.”  But in what Grimes described as “a full-body race,” crafting a strong strategy mitigates some of the formidable elements “It's like you're watching a bunch of different races because everyone has different strengths and weaknesses,” she said A “terrible” breaststroker like Grimes has confidence in her butterfly and backstroke legs but can’t exactly relax She focuses on building as much of a lead as possible knowing some of her competitors will catch her on breaststroke before the all-out 100 free to close he would burn his lower body on butterfly and backstroke and have little left for breaststroke he said he learned to float his legs more and save them for his surge in breaststroke when best times take a backseat to the podium Kalisz is also aware of how his competitors swim their races and where he needs to be in comparison going into the breaststroke leg He said he lets them do all the thinking in the first half before making his move in the second “There's a lot of lead changes that usually happen in the 400 IM and that's why I think it's the most beautiful race,” Kalisz said “I think it's absolutely a beast of a race but the mental aspect of it is also pretty brutal itself too.” the first thing that would go wrong in his past 400 IMs was losing focus as he’d “battle those inner negative voices.” But he said working with a mental performance coach the last three years has helped him regain control and close with a strong freestyle leg Also qualified for Paris in the 200-meter IM Foster said the shorter medley hurts more but for a shorter period of time whereas the “grueling” 400 IM hurts for the whole second 200 “I gotta get to that dark place,” Kalisz said “That five minutes that you're in the ready room before thinking about it and knowing what’s about to come — it could be a good race June 20th, 2024 National, News, Previews & Recaps Day 6 Prelims Heat Sheet After the excitement of the women’s 100 back on Tuesday night, expect the 200 to bring even more, as it will be the last chance for many swimmers to make the Olympic team, as there are just two more days of prelims and only three women’s events after this. American Record holder Regan Smith leads the entries with her seed time of 2:03.80 who set a new World Record in the 100 back who is the 2022 Worlds silver medalist in the event and along with White upset the then WR-holder Smith to take the two spots in this event at the Tokyo Games Held finished 5th last night in the 100 but must wait for his return to the Olympics until a roster spot opens up Williamson added 3 seconds to his 200 and placed 42nd overall He also added over a second in the 100 free but the 200 IM was always going to be his best shot at making the team We also have some bonus swimming as last night’s tie for 6th place in the Women’s 100 free final needs to be resolved. The swim will pit Catie Deloof against Erika Connolly née Brown If Shaine Casas does not make it into the final my pick ’ems will be sinking faster than Trenton Julian in the last 50 meters of the men’s 200 meter butterfly Can we please have will licon swim the im and somehow make the team?? top seed in semi’s and place 8th in the final Shouldn’t have scratched the 200 back buddy He isn’t swimming good so far but I think he could still pop a sub 1:57 and sneak on the team like last year I think it more depends on if lasco or kalisz are in 1:56 form right now he could sneak in the final / get qualified but will he be relevant in Paris without changing his mental fitness / preparation Will they do a second place finisher ceremony soon Or do the women have to wait for the men to lock World Records were broken at the 2024 US Olympic Swimming Trials June 02nd, 2024 National, News, Previews & Recaps, U.S. Olympic Trials I wrote the preview of this event for the 2023 World Championships Trials and in collecting information on all of the potential players in this event While the lead-up from 2022 to 2023 is certainly different than this year’s (by nature one would expect it to be as it is an Olympic year) Phelps had held the record for nearly 21 years dating back to August of 2002 (Marchand was all of three months old) Marchand plays more than one role in this story Not only is the world chasing his record time and his all-but-certain appearance in Paris but the two fastest Americans this year are not only coached by the same coach as Marchand but also train with him Yes, there is a caveat, as Carson Foster still likely is training with Eddie Reese who stated his intentions to coach through these Olympic Trials with the fastest Americans in recent memory and the new World Record holder all based out of one location one should expect fireworks over the coming years in this event But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; both Marchand and the American contingent have yet to be decided Chase Kalisz (photo: Jack Spitser) The two favorites last summer to make the US World’s team and atop the national ranking this year are reigning Olympic Gold medalist Chase Kalisz and Carson Foster got the better of the veteran at the US Trials last swimmer posting a time of 4:08.14 to win the 400 IM He also got the better of Kalisz in Fukuoka as he swam his way to the silver medal in a time of 4:06.56 who swam collegiately for the University of Texas has turned pro and has put all his focus into swimming long course meters but the expected results have yet to show themselves fully it is hard to say if and when Foster has tapered for a meet so his results from this past fall’s US Open and February’s World Champs are nebulous He finished second to Kalisz at the US Open but his 4:13.43 was over three seconds back despite his butterfly leg gaining him nearly a full-second lead a lead that carried through into the backstroke Doha appeared to be a building block as his prelim swim of 4:13.24 was faster than the US Open’s but his finals performance was off as he finished a disappointing 4th in a time of 4:12.62 Foster’s fly leg was the speediest of the group; his 55.18 was the only split under 56 and helped him build a lead of over a second and a half at the halfway mark and perhaps a proverbial diving bell was dropped as he slid from 1st to 4th in the closing legs of the race a fate that also befell him in the 200 IM where in the last leg he lost his chance to win that elusive individual gold medal Having finished third at the 2021 Trials, Foster hopes to make his first Olympic team, but he will first have to reassert himself atop the pack if he swims it With both the 200 free and 400 IM being back-to-back events in prelims on Day Two and only the final of the women’s 100 fly in between the final of the 400 IM and 200 free semifinals Foster may have to pick and choose his schedule While he likely will appear in the entry list for both events if we get any inclination to which event or if he opts for the dirtiest of doubles Kalisz opted not to swim in Doha but remains the fastest American this season Kalisz did not race again from early December until March when he posted a 4:13.52 in Westmont He was a second faster a month later in San Antonio albeit placing second to training partner Marchand who was fresh off of an NCAA meet of epic proportions Bobby Finke (photo: Jack Spitser) Two swimmers looking to turn their recent fortunes in the 400 IM around are Bobby Finke and Jay Litherland who rank as the 4th and 5th fastest Americans this season I caught some flack last year for predicting that Litherland, the Tokyo silver medalist, would place 5th and one of the swimmers I placed ahead of him ended up not swimming it so I still very well could have been right but enough about that because Finke and Litherland find themselves very much in the same position as they were last year: in tough competition with one another more known for his freestyle abilities has an IM pedigree that many would be envious of He won the 2019 Summer Nationals and won the yards version at the 2021 NCAAs At the last three international selection meets the Florida Gator has finished amongst the top 4; in 2021 at the Olympic Trials and last year he finished 3rd in a personal best time of 4:09.55 Jay Litherland (photo: Jack Spitser) Litherland, who swam at Georgia, has since moved to ASU (now Texas) to train with Kalisz and Bob Bowman winning the 4oo IM at the 2015 World University Games Litherland is a two-time Olympian and the reigning silver medalist in this event He represented the US Senior international team at every meet from 2016 through 2021 but struggled in 2022 Whereas Finke has his 800 and 1500 to make the team Litherland’s only likely shot to make the team is in this event Litherland traveled to Santiago for Pan-As and won the event in 4:15.44 and a month later posted a season-best 4:14.50 at the US Open He swam the event at all three stops of the Pro Swim Series but never better his time as he hovered in the 4:16-4: range would not be ranked so high in the event if it were not for his 4:14.44 at the Atlanta Classic last month he was only 4:23.61 (good for 14th) and 4:18 at the two PSS meets he attended but he seems to be fully gearing up for the Olympic Trials now as he also hit new PBs in the 100 back and 200 IM in Atlanta Sitting ahead of both Finke and Litherland in the rankings is David Johnston Johnston can throw down a good 400 IM as he is currently ranked 3rd in the nation and 18th in the nation The former Texas Longhorn opted not to swim this race last year at the World Trials and instead opted to swim the 400 He finished 1st in the 400 in 3:45.75 but would add nearly three seconds in Fukuoka to finish 17th Johnston has competed often and has included the 400 IM in his event line-up he was just 4:23.29 (12th) but had a strong showing in Doha Johnston was part of the small US men’s contingent to head to the 2024 World but he threw down a personal best 4:12.51 in prelims to take the top seed into finals He did swim the 400 IM again at the Westmont Stop of the Pro Swim Series he eschewed the event out in San Antonio and swam only freestyle at a recent meet in Irvine where he won both the 400 (3:48.06) and the 1500 (15:02.68) he’ll have a busy first three days as the 400 free is on Day One the 400 IM on Day Two and the 800 free on Day Three the race for the spots in the final are wide open No other US swimmer has been under 4:15 this season or at last year’s Trials let alone the Olympic Qualifying Time of 4:12.50 so every name from hereon out has an unlikely shot of making the team (at least in this event) Baylor Nelson (photo: Jack Spitser) Nelson has not had much long course competition this season showing the US Open with a time of 4:20.06 Another swimmer who overperformed in finals compared to their prelim swim at the 2023 Trials was Ian Grum The Georgia Bulldog finished 12th in prelims but came back to win his final (the B-final) in 4:16.26 a time that would have placed him 6th in the A-final put him into contention to compete with Litherland at the 2023 Pan-Am Games will need to be on his game in prelims as there is a strong contingent of newcomers looking at their shot at a finals appearance Gregg Enoch (photo: Jack Spitser) who finished 4th in the B-Final last year in 4:19.29 and used that opportunity to swim 4:18.76 to place 5th at Junior Worlds This season he finished in the top ten at two of the PSS meets this year (4th in Knoxville – 4:23.54) Two other high schoolers who may have a little more recognition are Ryan Erisman and Max Williamson but faltered in prelims and added over eight seconds to his seed time to finish 48th finishing second to Green at NCSA in a new PB of 4:19.35 While the future Cal Bear has improved in the event After taking silver at Junior Pan Pacs in 4:17.58 Williamson was just 4:21.36 at the 2023 Trials and was 4:30.37 at the Knoxville PSS meet With improvements in his other events and with the 400 IM scheduled for the same day as the 200 Free Williamson may opt for the later event as there are a max of six spots open in that event as opposed to the two in the IM While not high schoolers, the other three A-finalists from last year are also all in the jumble of swimmers above 4:15. 6th last year in 4:17.80, Owen Lloyd who may be best known for his controversial DQ at ACCs dropped further time to swim a new PB at the LEN U23 meet he hasn’t come close to getting under 4:20 again hitting 4:25 in October and 4:22.46 at the US Open In a similar boat are Danny Berlitz and Sean Grieshop Berlitz swam a strong 4:20.93 at the San Antonio PSS and will look to get back to the 4:17.46 that qualified him for the A-Final free of the confines of college swimming unlike Lloyd and Berlitz swam the 400 IM at all three World Aquatics World Cup meets this fall hitting 4:20.68 at the first leg of the series in Berlin but hasn’t been able to replicate those results this year swimming 4:32.03 in mid-May and skipping the event at the Irvine Speedo Grand Challenge and he hasn’t been under 4:15 since 2018 he may find himself boxed out of the final its a battle of Kalisz’s proven consistency and Foster’s youthful determinance Both have that top-end talent to medal in Paris but it’s whether or not Foster can hold off Kalisz’s breaststroke to get to the wall first in Indianapolis but only .08 separated them at trials last summer and Kalisz has the faster of the two season bests but we don’t know exactly how prepared Foster was for Doha and if he wasn’t fully rested than his 4:12.62 could have been faster it is a toss-up between Finke and Litherland but Litherland got the better of him in San Antonio Finke has the slight edge in the season best time (.06) we are giving the edge to the Florida Gator His off-event personal best in Atlanta and the fact that he beat Litherland (as predicted) last summer by nearly a second tips the scale in his favor Rumors swirl that Finke may opt for the 400 free and disregard the IM Picks five through eight are going to be contentious As an event not swum at every meet and not on the high school program where swimmers stand in this event is very nebulous we don’t yet know who will dive in for the 400 IM Johnston and Williamson are more on the unlikely side but any of the others could be on the fence (This serves as my disclaimer that this is a prediction based on fewer facts than normal so use it wisely as a guide for your Pick’ems he was 6th behind Berlitz’s 4:20.93 and more recently swam 4:23.36 at a UofL meet in early May who finished 5th in the B-final last summer (4:20.75) can get back under 4:20 he certainly has a chance to make the top 8 Smart money picks Foster to win (he’ll swim it though he wants a relay spot badly in the 800FR) and I’m contemplating a slight Finke upset for 2nd The 200 free schedule conflict certainly creates a problem for Baylor Nelson and my guess is he picks the free given his success last summer I think Kalisz rebounds later in the meet for a 200 IM berth but having our American staple in this event off the roster this summer will definitely feel weird I don’t see any American swimmer winning a medal in the M 200 FR dropped 3 seconds this season in SCY to first take the ACC title and then finish 10th overall at NCAAs with another personal best Given that distance free is a pretty solid indicator of ability to convert to LCM as well he dropped 8 seconds in the 500 free to go a 4:15.1 and 36 seconds in the mile for a 15:05 this season 4:19 is 10+ seconds back from what Foster and Chase will be going lol I think he means to make the final not the team Another name I would throw in there would be Gio Linscheer Swam that with Mono healing and has been 17-18 I think He and Linsheer should be in the talks for sure about the final Always confused me how he wasn’t stronger in the 200/400 free with how well he closes his 4IM He was competitive in 200 free around 2016 but has fallen off since then If Finke and Foster opt out this will be a victory lap for Kalicz and Litherland There’s a long gap to the next group of swimmers after the top four I wouldn’t write off Hochwalt for the final quite so easily His preparation fpr San Antonio was apparently not all that focused 2:16.32 Breast(all from ’23) and 3:55.46 400 free (a Trials cut in 3 of 4 strokes and only .33 off 200 breast cut) and with the overall endurance to also be 15:05+ scy 1650) would seem capable of dropping several seconds off 4:19 1:59.30 and 2:17.73 which add to only 0.69 ahead of Hochwalt The differential in rested swims between JL playing home against KKS 1925 Kalisz on Sun By 2024-06-20T10:37:00+01:00 When 15 years ago Katarzyna Kalisz founded a consultancy to help French investors set up businesses in Poland she knew her life was set to become more frenetic “Although I loved this period of my career and never-ending tasks as I travelled from meetings to business trips to conferences,” she recalls with seemingly no end of US and European industrial companies keen to establish subsidiaries in her home country the move gave her an opportunity to combine her local knowledge and language skills – she is fluent in English and competent in French – with the commercial acumen she picked up studying for her master’s degree in business administration (MBA) That wave of investors in the first two decades of the century included aerospace heavyweights Collins Aerospace all of which opened factories around the city of Rzeszow in southeast Poland an area just 70km from the Ukraine border that has been marketed for the past 20 years as Aviation Valley Those eyeing the growing cluster also numbered lower-tier suppliers lured not only by Aviation Valley’s infrastructure but by the chance to have production facilities on the doorstep of key customers a medium-sized French company based near Safran’s engine factory in Villaroche outside Paris that makes a proprietary self-locking system for nuts and plugs used by aero engine manufacturers GE Aerospace Kalisz began advising JPB’s chief executive and owner Damien Marc who had earmarked Aviation Valley as a potential location for a new factory helping with the language barrier and to make local connections Marc was so impressed by her abilities that he ended up offering her a job as JPB Poland’s first employee in 2016 Kalisz has built the subsidiary to more than 40 employees It is situated in a building opposite the city’s airport that serves as an incubator for start-ups and other new businesses JPB will open a 40,000sq m (431,000sq ft) new-build factory next to the nearby facilities of Collins Aerospace and MTU She describes it as “the project of my life” Kalisz has embarked on a recruitment drive “Each month we are hiring a new CNC operator and focusing on our goal of manufacturing from the new factory as soon as possible,” she says She has also been working with architects on the design of the building As well as bringing production into one ergonomic hall the new facility will feature a gym – an unusual touch in enterprises of that size in Poland “We really believe in taking care of our workers,” says Kalisz Because Aviation Valley is now home to some 160 aerospace firms and several colleges specialising in producing technicians Kalisz is not finding it too hard to recruit “We are located in a very special place,” she says “There are thousands of CNC operators and for a company like ours A key benefit of the growing cluster to the Polish economy is it has helped stem the tide of talented and ambitious young Poles from the region moving abroad to work who like Kalisz have spent time in other countries working or studying attracted by higher salaries as well as living costs that are lower than in France Kalisz admits she “did not fall in love with aviation in childhood” although her older sister did achieve her commercial pilot’s licence 17 years ago Neither does she have an engineering background so studied for her MBA before going on to form her own advisory firm That led to work for the French-Polish chamber of commerce where she “met some really interesting people in the aerospace industry who motivated me to move my path towards more technical topics” who persuaded her to quit her consultancy and work for JPB After the hard graft of running her own company A mother with a three-month old son at the time she was responsible for everything from recruiting the first employees to documentation on EU projects equipping the production facility and delivering the initial products but it didn’t stop me from pushing hard,” she says She has strong views on how much harder it can be for women to demonstrate their leadership abilities than men not just in aerospace but across all aspects of business it is much more difficult to prove our competence and knowledge “You should be able to be whatever you want to be if you are prepared to work hard.” She believes it is important for women in senior positions to mentor younger colleagues and brings up the example of Urszula Majorkiewicz the female head of the French-Polish chamber of commerce who “inspired and believed in me” when Kalisz started her consultancy “Even though I don’t have a technical background she gave me the confidence that I could do it,” she says she concedes that being a business leader as well as a mother can be a challenge and not just because of the pressures of the clock “There are times at work when it is important to be seen as strong and strict,” she says when your child’s chocolate falls on the Radiologists usually only know patients by their scans. But Gurney wanted to meet Dr. Kalisz in person. Kalisz spotted a rare form of cancer while looking over abdominal CT scans Gurney had received for something else. An oncologist later confirmed goblet cell adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of appendix cancer. Anna said that because Kalisz was thorough in reviewing the image, the cancer was spotted early; she was able to connect with surgical care here at Duke and now shows no evidence of disease.  According to the National Cancer Institute, appendix cancer only affects one to two people per million every year in the U.S. Copyright © 2025 Duke University Health System 22 Mar 2025 16:15:00 GMT?.css-1txiau5-AnswerContainer{color:var(--GlobalColorScheme-Text-secondaryText2);}KKS 1925 Kalisz won 1–0 over Zaglebie Sosnowiec on Sat The current head to head record for the teams are Zaglebie Sosnowiec 1 win(s) Haven't kept a clean sheet in 12 matches Have scored 9 goals in their last 5 matches Who won between Zaglebie Sosnowiec and KKS 1925 Kalisz on Sat 22 Mar 2025 16:15:00 GMT?KKS 1925 Kalisz won 1–0 over Zaglebie Sosnowiec on Sat 22 Mar 2025 16:15:00 GMT.InsightsHave scored 10 goals in their last 5 matches Zaglebie Sosnowiec is playing home against KKS 1925 Kalisz on Sat Reflecting on the unexpected success of the weekend Walsh admitted that she will now have to reset her goals for the rest of the long course season Carlson has the potential to impact UIC in the 200 free where last season’s top times were held by graduate students Spain repeated as the Men’s Water Polo World Cup champions and secured a spot to compete in Singapore a SwimSwam partner Commit Swimming has Team Management Software Improved Meet Entry Flow in Commit What… La decisión tiene efecto inmediato tras una votación en una reunión extraordinaria del European Aquatics Bureau el 24 de abril May 16th, 2024 National, News, Podcasts, Training, Video Chase Kalisz is a 2x Olympian and the reigning Olympic champion in the 400 IM. He’s gearing up for his 4th Olympic Trials, which are just one month away, with a training camp in Colorado Springs. His coach there, Bob Bowman has thrown some pretty gnarly sets at him throughout the last couple weeks The former Georgia Bulldog also speaks about recovery away from practice his mentality heading into his 4th Olympic Trials and the importance of his sponsors heading into Indianapolis Last year he said that he did more yardage than he’d ever done in his entire life but his 400 IM 2.5 seconds slower at 2023 worlds than 2022 worlds Yeah he should be fast in the next few months Does bowman have any past examples of swimmers over trained would have liked to hear more about the straight 5000 at your own speed Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1 and although he actually has no memory of that where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks More from Coleman HodgesSee All For once, the term of the week on Beauty TikTok isn't the name of an algorithmically promoted physical insecurity it's a rare trend that celebrates the imperfections of an unmodified lip: It's a Beetlejuice lip A flurry of other beauty creators replicated Kalisz's video but something quickly became clear: If a creator has lip filler the technique either turns out sloppy or doesn't work at all natural lip creases for the eye shadow to settle around and create defined contrast Lip filler smooths out those necessary creases The most popular example of Beetlejuice lips gone wrong is makeup influencer Jeffree Star's attempt, which received over 25 million views and nearly 2 million likes What the fuck." The top comment on his post reads "I think it's cuz you have lip filler so your lip creases aren't as deep and obvious!" Star replied Viewers used to seeing creators normalize fillers and injectables — and promote an unattainable beauty standard — relished this turning of the tables. A London-based makeup artist posted a video stating "My new guilty pleasure is watching beauty influencers with too much lip filler try Beetlejuice lips." It racked up nearly 9 million views and over 1 million likes suggesting a dissatisfaction with the status quo.  Robbie Roe, a 28-year-old graphic designer and touring musician, decided to post a similar video after seeing Star's video I've been noticing a lot more beauty influencers getting a lot of work done and then using it to sell products to people," Roe told Mashable.  "There's something kind of beautiful about there being a beauty trend that's only for people who don't have fillers … Maybe this lays the groundwork for more beauty trends that utilize the totally natural creases and lines of our faces." It received nearly 4 million views and over 430,000 likes.  Roe is right. Minimally invasive procedures, including Botox and filler, are on the rise. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons minimally invasive procedures grew by 7 percent in 2023 The report notes that Botox is so normalized in American culture that "patients mention it as casually as running an errand to the store or post office." citing the dangers of unlicensed practitioners The surge in injectables and fillers isn't just risky from a medical perspective it's also creating an unrealistic standard of "natural beauty," where the bulk of public-facing figure's beauty maintenance happens under the needle or knife rather than with the products they hawk on TikTok the "weird" beauty trends embracing the natural folds and contours of the face push back against the suffocating norms Beetlejuice lips treat makeup as an art form rather than an obligation "[The ubiquity of plastic surgery on TikTok] upsets me because people have such unique features," said Roe But Kalisz's corner of TikTok gives them hope "There's another subset of makeup TikTok that's specific to those unique features There's a lot of creators who do things you can aspire to because they look like you." L’analisi del podio di più esperienza di Parigi: i 50 stile Con la prima medaglia olimpica di Cameron McEvoy e di Ben Proud I 50 stile libero vinti da Sarah Sjostrom sono frutto di un’alta frequenza di bracciate July 18th, 2024 International, National, News, Paris 2024, Previews & Recaps There won’t be much preamble in this event as so much of it was covered last summer here is a little bit of last year’s coverage Leon Marchand of France won his second consecutive World Championships in Fukuoka He not only broke Michael Phelp’s longest and last record of 4:03.84 being the first swimmer under the 4:03 barrier Behind him were the US’s Carson Foster (4:06.56) and Daiya Seto (4:09.41) Marchand is the clear and obvious front-runner as he is entered more than four seconds clear of his nearest competition and is the only active swimmer to have been under 4:05.9 being the favorite on paper is no guarantee to success and Marchand’s performances this year might be a glimmer of hope to his opponents which allowed entry times dating back to March 1st Marchand ranks 11th in the world and just 9th among Olympic entrants His time of 4:10.62 from the French Elite Championships did clock in as a season-best surpassing the 4:11.21 he swam at the San Antonio stop of the Pro Swim Series but was nowhere near as fast or impressive as the swims put up by his rivals Yet those times should not be any cause for major concern Marchand was 4:10.57 at the French Elite Championships and was 4:10.88 in the prelims in Fukuoka and then went on to break the WR Marchand did not opt to redshirt his NCAA season he helped lead ASU to its first title in program history Marchand set new NCAA records in the 200 free He was also a part of three NCAA-winning relays two of which set NCAA records with the Frenchmen swimming the fastest 100-breast split ever on the 4×100 Medley Relay Training under Phelps’ long-time coach Bob Bowman Marchand has not only brought the 400 IM to new heights but also French Swimming Florent Manaudou’s silver from the 50 free four of them gold and three of those four belonging to Marchand who also claimed the top prize in the 200 fly and 200 IM While Marchand has three other individual events to swim in Paris with the 200 breast joining the aforementioned 200s the 400 IM is the first event on his plate and no issues of fatigue should have any factor in his attempt to win what will likely be France’s first medal of the meet (photo: Jack Spitser) Unlikely to dethrone Marchand but certainly in a strong position to the podium are the American duo of Carson Foster and Chase Kalisz Foster’s appearance in Paris will be a redemption after coming so close in multiple events at the 2021 US Olympic Trials After a heartbreaking 3rd in this event three years ago Foster left nothing to chance as he attacked the race from the get-go and ultimately finished first in a time of 4:07.64 a time that ranks him first in the world this season by a margin of over a second who twice at World Championships has finished behind Marchand finds himself in a familiar spot as he sits second in the entry lists with his silver medal-winning performance from Fukuoka of 4:06.56 The 2024 World Championships notwithstanding Foster is likely the only swimmer to have a shot of usurping Marchand He is the only other swimmer since Covid to have swum under 4:07 His success has not been limited to the Olympics as he won four medals in the event at the World Championships Kalisz has medaled at every international meet the US has competed in since 2013 until last year After claiming bronze (4:07.47) at the 2022 Worlds behind Marchand and Foster almost a full second back of 3rd and just .14 ahead of 5th place Yet these results do not spell doom and gloom entirely for Kalisz and his prospects at a third Olympic medal was faster than both his prelims and finals swims in Fukuoka just because Kalisz is better than he was last summer it doesn’t mean he is the favorite for the bronze Daiya Seto courtesy World Aquatics While Kalisz helped fill the gap left by Phelps and Lochte, he wasn’t alone as both Kosuke Hagino and Daiya Seto were perennial medal winners in the event While Hagino has since retired from the sport is still swimming and poses a great threat to the American’s medal chances the Japanese swimmer has medaled (in either IM event) at every international championship from 2013 on where he failed to make the final in the 400 despite entering as the top seed Seto finished 6th in 4:11.93 but rebounded at home in 2023 Seto finished 2nd in 4:10.84 behind Matsushita but recently overtook him in the world rankings as Seto clocked a 4:09.68 at the Sette Colli Trophy meet in Rome just a month ago and now sits 7th amongst the world this season who will turn 19 in the middle of swimming portions of the Olympics ranks two spots behind Seto as the 9th fastest this season who won the 2023 Junior World Championships in a then PB of 4:10.97 dropped a 27.38 last 50 to break the meet record by nearly a second and come within a second of the Junior World Record The 18-year-old has since dropped that time down to 4:10.04 and sits on the precipice of the sub-4:10 club and while he has the opportunity to he still has a long way to catch two of those club members both of whom are in prime position to medal Brendon Smith (photo: Jack Spitser) any swimmer besides probably Marchand and Foster needs to make sure that they put in a strong prelims swim On opposite sides of the 2023-2024 World Rankings but with home countries very close to one another are New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt and Australia’s Brendon Smith was one of the many surprises for the Australian team in Tokyo After posting the fastest time in prelims and setting a new Oceanian Swim Record claiming the nation’s first medal of the meet Since then has helped the Australian men in the 4×200 free relay win silver in 2022 but has failed to medal in this event finishing 5th in both 2022 (4:11.36) and 2023 (4:10.37) despite sitting 10th in the World rankings and entering as the 9th seed Smith’s time from the Australian Trials of 4:10.18 is his fourth fastest time ever and faster than both of his results from the last two World Champs he has competed in Breaking out in 2019 with a bronze medal at the Gwangju Worlds had struggled to replicate that early success until recently After posting a national record of 4:12.07 in 2019 Clareburt lowered it again at the Olympics swimming 4:09.49 in the prelims and sat 2nd heading into finals but fell to 7th as he stopped the clock at 4:11.22 Clareburt would final in both but failed to repeat that podium position and 2019 may have been a one-and-done until this February when the Kiwi climbed to the top of the podium Perhaps learning to take things a little slower Clareburt was 5th in prelims (4:13.61) but dropped the hammer in the finals swimming 4:09.72 to claim his first individual gold at Worlds that time was enough for Clarburt as three months later he was the slimmest margin (.01) away from his PB and National & Oceanian record of 4:08.70 as he posted a then season leading time of 4:08.71 The New Zealand record of 4:08.70 comes from Clareburt’s 2022 Commonwealth Games win over Smith and Duncan Scott a field that notably did not include any English swimmers in the final Clareburt was not the only swimmer to take away hardware and confidence from the 2024 Worlds (I did mention that we would talk about it more and hope it is not too much scrolling back and forth) Great Britain’s Max Litchfield outside of a silver at the 2016 Short Course Worlds has never medaled on the international level swam his fastest time at the Doha Worlds since the prelims of the 2021 Olympics overtaking Foster on the last 100 to stop the clock in 4:10.40 just .20 slower than his 8th place prelims swim in Tokyo and faster than his equal 4th place finish in the final of 4:10.59 Coincidentally the same position as in 2016 where the Brit finished in 4th albeit in a slower time of 4:11.62 Since then, the 29-year-old has only gotten better. He dropped a new personal best of 4:09.14, improving up his seven-year-old former best of 4:09.62 from the 2017 Worlds. The new mark also overtook the British national record of 4:09.18 held by Duncan Scott with less than two weeks until the event starts and is the 15th fastest performer of all time While Razzetti has never medaled in this event in a World Championships he did win the silver in the 200 fly and bronze in the 200 IM in Doha at the 2022 European Championships in Rome Razzetti’s medal chances may line up in other events but as the 4th fastest performer this season he definitely has the skill and ability to repeat and even better his 8th place showing from 2021 At the recent 2024 European Championships, three swimmers set themselves apart from the field and swam their way to the top of the World Rankings and into contention for the final. Claiming gold in a new personal best and national record was Greece’s Apostolos Papastamos whose 4:10.83 erased his own nearly five-year-old record of 4:11.93 The time was a PB for Zombori and was a strong return to form for Hollo but both will likely need to be right around 4:10 to have to final Despite Marchand’s rather lackluster performance at the French Trials nothing suggests that he was unprepared for his opportunity to shine in front of his home nation the Frenchman was not fully rested for the meet and more than likely could rattle his world record in the finals Foster seems to be a shoo-in for the silver after having finished in the same spot at both the 2022 and 2023 Worlds unless something drastic were to happen being under 4:10 and being just .01 off his PB gives him a slight edge over the veteran pair After those five, Max Litchfield looks best positioned to make the final having already done so both in 2016 and 2021 He could even contest with the aforementioned three for the bronze but would need to reach even greater heights to do so while Seto and Kalisz have the experience of swimming in the 4:07 range and with these Games likely their last they will do everything in their power to medal Dark Horse: Tristan Jankovics (CAN) – The OSU swimmer and native of Canada dropped boatloads of time at the Canadian Swimming Trials in May having first set a PB of 4:15.68 in the prelims and then dropping even more time in the finals to stop the clock in 4:11.74 clearing the 4:12.50 OQT in the process Just .33 off the super-suited Canadian record who placed 8th behind Marchand at the 2024 NCAAs could be in line to drop even more time and make the final being the first Canadian to do so since 2008 will make some history for Canada as he is the first entrant in the event for his nation since 2012 I will attend the heats and the final on this event on July 28th Thanks for mentioning one of my favorite bands bronze is a lottery but I can go along with this podium Bob Bowman foreign male swimmers will probably win more individual gold than US male swimmers in total Litchfield about to finish 4th for the 3rd Olympics in a row The other one id also say is a dark horse is Cedric Bussing went a 2 second pb from 4:14 to 4:12 and I think he has a good shot at making the final I never initially look at authors for articles and when I see the worst puns of all time for section headers I don’t have to to know Mark wrote it There is a not-so-underground competitive punning circuit in Philadelphia and I am not ashamed to admit that I have been to many of the events You may find these events amusing but they couldn’t possibly hold a candle to the World Gurning Championships held annually at the Egremont Crab Fair June 16th, 2024 National, News, and the reactions tonight and those that we saw last night after Gretchen Walsh broke the World Record are some of the large undercurrents that ebb and flow throughout professional swimming there is a collective sense of accomplishment as a group you continue to swim and push yourself for the camaraderie which was evident in the way Kalisz celebrated Fosters win It wasn’t Foster’s fastest time but until Paris it may be his most memorable swim In 2021, Foster was the top seed into the finals 2021 but was run down in the last 100 by Jay Litherland who made up a differential of over 2.9 seconds and placed second behind Kalisz Foster also finished 4th in the 200 IM and 8th in the 200 free missing out on an Olympic berth in three events by less than a combined two seconds who would go on to win the silver medal in Tokyo hugged Foster after he got out of the pool the 400 IM was Foster’s best chance of making the team in 2021 the event represented Litherland’s best chance Upon receiving his medal and his bouquet of flowers saying he was going to celebrate with his family tonight and urged the crowd to get loud for brother tonight It might be one of the greatest nights in the Foster for Jake to get on the team goes in knowing he’s not the best but keeps pushin what a badass How did we get Carti on Swimswam before the new album Most people have no idea of the level of effort and sacrifice required to train as an elite athlete for the Olympics. It's unquestionably a full-time job, even as many athletes have additional jobs to support themselves Fans don't see are the endless hours of training and recovery preparing for a moment that happens only every four years For The Win spoke with Team USA swimmers competing at the Games to learn what a typical training day is like for them So here's a look at a day in the Olympic training life of Regan Smith Katie Grimes and Chase Kalisz — all of whom are at least two-time Olympic swimmers A three-time Olympic medalist, 22-year-old Smith is racing for her first Olympic gold in Paris and she has a shot at it in all three events Smith told For The Win in June that she has two typical training days: one when she swims twice and another when she swims and then weight lifts Breakfast for Smith is all about packing in as many nutrients She usually eats oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter a scoop of protein powder and a tablespoon of chia seeds she heads home for a second breakfast and a nap she said she was binge-watching America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on Netflix she sticks with typically breakfast food and will have two or three eggs with toast — Weight training when she doesn't have a second practice — Swim practice when she doesn't have weight training So she eats dinner — often meal prep from Hello Fresh because she loves routine — and finds ways to relax and unwind "Yesterday [in June] after my second practice ended I spent an hour and a half sitting outside reading my book in the shade because I love heat," she said about living and training in Austin with Longhorn Aquatics so I just sat outside and it's like 95 degrees and relaxed and then went to bed." Back for his third Olympics, 29-year-old Murphy has been remarkably consistent over the years, and at U.S. trials, he became the first swimmer to win the men's 100 and 200 backstroke at three straight U.S. trials and For The Win spoke with him on campus in May After his first practice of the day (on days when he has doubles) Murphy heads home for a second breakfast and gets some non-training work done "I'm building a swim school in my hometown of Jacksonville right now," Murphy said "And then I'm also an advisor to do two different investment firms out here So I'm an advisor to a venture capital group that's investing in companies with a Cal co-founder and then I'm an advisor to a private equity group that's investing in medical devices So I try to keep myself busy in between the practices." then I'm typically recovering for the next day," Murphy said I'll do some stretching to make sure I'm loose for the next day." The at-home sauna and cold plunge is a huge perk and probably the No "I'm able to get way deeper into my muscles when I'm stretching in the sauna," he said So it's really a nervous system reset when you go back and forth between the two and so it just makes you feel really good the next day." The most versatile swimmer on Team USA's Olympic roster 18-year-old Grimes has been training for very different events: a marathon swim the longest race in the pool and the 400 IM which is a grueling spectacle of 100 meters butterfly So her Las Vegas training days start early "I always have oatmeal before morning practice because it's light and it doesn't upset my stomach," she said in June and sometimes I'll have waffles or pancakes or something like bacon and eggs." Until she recently graduated from high school Grimes said she'd get some school work done for two or three hours and I can eat the same thing every day if I have to," Grimes said I'll just have white rice and grilled chicken or steak or salmon or something like that with a vegetable And then it's usually the same for dinner." A three-time Olympian with a gold and a silver medal, 30-year-old Kalisz is aiming to make history in Paris. Although no man at least 30 years old has ever won an Olympic swimming medal in a race at least 400 meters long, as Swimming World magazine noted Kalisz could be the first if he makes the podium who was promoting his partnership with Eli Lilly and Company Olympic training center in Colorado Springs in May but it's part of the job," he said about training at altitude he was doing two swim practices a day on Mondays he would just have a morning workout and the afternoon off "It's quite a bit hectic schedule for just going back and forth to the pool trying to mentally prepare for the next workout," he said "And then you throw in the aspect of being up at altitude where just walking down the street makes you sore So I think it's a very crucial part of my training and this is my third month-long camp this year that I've been to I think collectively — I've looked it up — I've done about two years of my life total up here in Colorado A wobbly Nikola Jokic was delighted to hear Anthony Edwards’ blunt assessment of USA vs. Serbia Kevin Durant sent Serbia's locker room into an existential crisis during Team USA's Olympic win Anthony Edwards had the cockiest exchange with Barack Obama before the Olympics At the invitation of Kalisz Mayor Krystian Kinastowski our city had the pleasure of hosting delegations from several of our partner cities: Hamm (Germany) along with a representative from Visit Wallonia (Belgium) Before the commemorative meeting of the Kalisz City Council the visiting delegations explored the Maria Dąbrowska Manor in Russów This visit held special significance as part of the Year of Maria Dąbrowska celebrations honoring the acclaimed writer with strong ties to our region It offered the guests a chance to delve into the life and legacy of the author of Nights and Days providing them with a deeper appreciation of Kalisz’s cultural heritage The highlight of the visit was a commemorative meeting  of the Kalisz City Council where the delegations met the recipients of the city’s most prestigious honors and awards This event was also an opportunity to celebrate the 35th anniversary of our twin-city partnerships with Preston (UK) and Kamianets Podilskyi (Ukraine) Mayor Krystian Kinastowski underscored the value of international partnerships in driving the growth of Kalisz He highlighted collaborative projects that have brought mutual benefits to our city and its partners and I represent the Faculty of Engineering and Business at the Technical University of Moldova The decision to participate in this mobility was spontaneous I love changes and unpredictable opportunities that tend to appear in my life which is why I made up my mind to participate in this program Coming to Kalisz was kind of a challenge – I felt afraid and excited at the same time I was greeted warmly by our buddy students from the university who helped me calm down and get to know the town better I formed friendships with people from various cultures: Ukraine Our teachers were very kind and supportive they allowed us to express our views freely on different topics based on the subjects we studied We worked on group projects and visited several places and we also had the opportunity to attend a school competition This mobility gave me an amazing experience I learned what it feels like to live alone in another country gained new knowledge about different cultures discovered new things and passions about myself I definitely recommend participating in the Erasmus+ programme without noise and with beautiful architecture then the city of
