Poland – It’s a balmy afternoon on a curving stretch of the Oder
These creatures are only the most visible wildlife here
more birds can be heard chirping in the trees
“Life is teeming,” says Agnieszka Konowaluk-Wrotniak
as she takes The Parliament on an afternoon tour of the area
But this idyllic summer scene hides a persistent danger to the Oder’s delicate biodiversity and the livelihoods of those who call the region home
some of which acts as a natural border between Poland and Germany
Though it’s one of Poland’s most regulated — the course of the river is more human-made than natural — wildlife preserves like the one that Konowaluk-Wrotniak is showing off still dot its path
the Prussians made the Oder an important inland waterway for a newly unified German empire to which this part of Poland belonged
It served the same function when the Nazis took over in the 1930s and then in post-war communist Poland
Since then the Oder has seen a steep decline in commercial importance
Even without much diesel-powered shipping traffic to disturb it
Climate change has steadily driven up temperatures and affected water levels
Those effects dovetail with toxic algae blooms
made worse by heat waves and high salinity.
The toxic bloom was first reported in the Gliwice Canal
which connects southeastern Poland to the Baltic Sea via the Oder
Fishing out dead animals and containing the algae there was part of a frantic effort to protect areas downstream
“The water in the canal was so salty that metal components of a landing net I worked with to get dead fish out of the water corroded after only a few hours,” Bogdan Wziątek
a biologist who was heavily involved in protecting the river during and since the algae disaster
Mining in the region contributes to the Oder’s saline levels
mines need to pump out water to avoid flooding
combined with the risk of another hot and dry summer
has Oder watchers ringing the algae alarm again
New toxic blooms and more dead fish have been reported in 2024
Hydrological conditions are similar to 2022
according to a report by Poland’s Climate and Environment Ministry in June.
“It’s no mystery that the Oder is a degraded river
We have known about how [salty] its waters are for decades,” Agnieszka Kolada
a hydrobiologist at the Institute of Environmental Protection
What researchers don’t know for sure
is the best way forward to reduce pollution from industry and farming or how to carry out forest management in the river’s basin
They are also perplexed by how deadly the 2022 bloom was; algae of this kind are nothing new
The EU report cited a doubling in salinity levels in less than a week, the precise cause of which investigators could not identify. However, the report also noted 282 places along the Oder where the discharge of industrial and toxic wastewater has taken place without a permit
Another similarity to 2022, activists say, is the lack of political action despite a change in government. A lot of promises were made during the election campaign last year
“We had politicians pretty much lining up to talk to us and promising whatever help before the election,” she said
such as river monitoring and faster reaction to potential problems
“but it’s not even close to what should be happening.”
The Polish government — an unwieldy coalition of four parties ranging from conservatives to the left
which kicked out the PiS last year after its eight years in power — appears at odds over the Oder’s future
While the environment ministry wants to see the river restored in the hopes of warding off a repeat of the 2022 disaster
the infrastructure ministry is aiming to bring back the Oder’s historical role as an important transport node
Though the ministry recently said it would participate in a new legislative proposal to “renaturalise” the Oder
a ministry spokesperson told The Parliament that it hoped that the EU would pay for new river work
The project would allow for a tripling of cargo — to six million tonnes annually — along a longer section
from the Gliwice Canal in the south to Szczecin in the north
Scientists like Wziątek think that plan is unrealistic, especially as climate change puts pressure on keeping rivers navigable. Germany’s Rhine river, which is far bigger than the Oder, has suffered repeatedly from low water levels
making passage all but impossible for certain stretches of the year
”There is not enough water in [the] Oder,” he said
“Changing it would require enormous investments
which would be far more costly than whatever revenues a navigable Oder would turn in,” Wziątek said
Any plans to re-industrialise the river would have to comply with EU-level environmental regulations
The 2023 report called for a strengthening of them EU-wide
as well as better monitoring of industrial impacts and stronger enforcement at national level
That applies not just to the Oder but “also in other susceptible European river basin districts,” the report found
“We just don’t know what the government is up to when it comes to preventing a new disaster and what’s going on with all the legislative changes that must happen to stop the discharge of saline water into the Oder,” Anita Kucharska-Dziedzic
She criticised the government for falling short of ensuring that Wody Polskie
a state agency responsible for water management
can comprehensively assess pollution levels
she said that companies can get permits to discharge wastewater
but there is no effective way to understand the cumulative impact of doing so
“Fees for discharging saline water and other waste should go through the roof so that it makes more sense for polluting companies to invest in treatment installations,” Kucharska-Dziedzic said
Government officials blame their predecessors for the problem
“We are now trying to make mining companies aware that they must now get their act together and stop polluting the river,” Mikołaj Dorożała
the deputy minister for climate and environment
denied playing a role in the Oder’s degradation
though acknowledged that pumping mine water into the Gliwice Canal or tributaries feeding the Oder was “not possible to stop,” citing safety requirements
The ping-pong of blame does not fly with Oder residents
who are growing increasingly impatient with the situation
a local musician who has become an Oder defender
told The Parliament that he sees a repeat of the 2022 toxic bloom on the horizon
“Only this time the kill will be less because most fish and clams died in 2022 anyway,” he said

Forty-three years since the first and last time a Polish club became men’s champions of Europe (Plomien Milowice in 1978) and for the first time since the introduction of the CEV Champions League Volley format in 2000, Poland’s Grupa Azoty Kedzierzyn-Kozle completed their journey to the continental crown.
Fuelled by the mastery of captain and playmaker Benjamin Toniutti of France, Grupa Azoty outplayed five-time club world champions and three-time European champions Trentino Itas Trento of Italy in four sets in Saturday’s Super Final in Verona to get on the Champions League podium for the second time in the club’s history, after their bronze in 2003.
The French international setter spread Grupa Azoty’s offensive efforts nicely among all of his attackers to help convert a 34% excellent reception to a 52% excellent spiking on the way to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 28-26) victory.

Polish bookmaker STS has entered into a cooperation agreement with the ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle volleyball team, making the operator the official club sponsor of the three-time Champions League winners. The partnership runs for three years.
The deal will cover the next three seasons. The bookmaker’s logo will appear on the front of the league shirts of this year’s Champions League winners, as well as on LED banners, sponsor walls and other display elements of the club's Azoty Arena.
The collaboration will also include digital activities in social media, on the team's website and in newsletters. STS is also planning "special activations" aimed at fans, both online and offline. As part of the contract, the company is given the title of Official Sponsor of the ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle team.
“Our contract with the current European Champions is a decision based on our experience and aspirations. It is also the next stage of our successful and widely implemented strategy of supporting domestic sport,” says Paweł Rabantek, Chief Marketing Officer at STS.
“We are playing together with champions – ZAKSA is another championship club after Raków Częstochowa and hockey and football players GKS Katowice, with whom we are establishing cooperation this year. This is only natural for STS as the undisputed market leader in bookmaking in Poland."
"What’s more, as a committed sponsor who repeatedly goes beyond the framework of contracts concluded in its sponsorship cooperation, we also plan to activate the contract in Kędzierzyn together with the club for the benefit of the fans,” he added.
For the start of the Plus Liga volleyball season, STS has planned promotions with bonuses and odds boosts for the Kędzierzyn team’s matches, including "a special promotional action." New customers registering with a dedicated code can receive a PLN 300 bonus for a win by the Polish team. For existing customers, the bookmaker has prepared an offer with a risk-free bet and dedicated odds for the first match.
“I am really excited to welcome STS as the Official Sponsor of Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle. This is another big, recognizable brand that joins the #ZAKSAfamily,” commented ZAKSA S.A. President Piotr Szpaczek.
"I believe that we will work out an interesting model of cooperation that will be satisfactory for both parties, especially as we are joining with STS for three seasons. Thank you for your trust and see you in October on the Plus Liga floor."
"STS is actively involved in supporting Polish sports, being the largest private entity in the domestic sponsorship market," the bookmaker says. In addition to ZAKSA, the company also sponsors the Polish national football team, Polish champion Raków Częstochowa, Korona Kielce, GKS Katowice, TS Podbeskidzie, Jagiellonia Białystok, Zagłębie Lubin and Widzew Łódź.

The Koźle Basin in Poland was radically transformed by aerial bombardment during the Second World War
the region has approximately 6000 well-preserved bomb craters with diameters ranging from 5–15m and depths often exceeding 2m
Combining remote-sensing data and fieldwork with historical accounts
demonstrating that their varied morphologies derive from the weight of the bombs that created them
and on the type and moisture content of the soil on which the bombs fell
the authors issue a call for the official protection of the Koźle landscape
Site map of the Koźle Basin: 1) area with bomb craters; 2) former synthetic fuel plant; 3a) study area; 3b) flak battery near Dziergowice; 3c) former foresters' lodge in Dąbrowa; 4) coal-mining area; 5) flak battery; 6) roads; 7) railway line; 8) river; 9) canal; 10) port (figure by Jan Maciej Waga

The aim of this article is to present research on craters that highlights the massive aerial bombing of local industrial plants in the Koźle Basin in 1944
along with the craters’ morphological and morphometric characteristics
We present the first investigation of an intensively bombed Polish landscape
which offers an important contribution to the field of conflict archaeology
inform appropriate decisions concerning the protection of these craters as both a cultural and natural heritage landscape
We have mapped the distribution of individual craters within the study area through the analysis of a shaded relief map generated from extant lidar data (resolution 4pts/m2, lit from the 315° azimuth; map based on data from www.polska.e-mapa.net)
The diameter of each crater has been documented using a distance and surface area measurement application
We sought to establish the dimensions of the craters before they were transformed by human or animal activity (e.g
by animals accessing the water within or by boar wallows)
Crater diameters depend not only on the mass of bombs dropped and the type of fuses used
but also on the geological and hydrological conditions of the ground
Our analysis of the size and shape of craters was therefore focused on areas within each similar geo-environmental feature
These comprise Pleistocene and Holocene terraces formed from mineral river sediments
Using remote sensing and field observations
detailed measurements of craters located in these areas were collected and the state of each crater's preservation determined
Field measurements were taken using a GPSMAP 62st receiver and Nikon Forestry Pro laser rangefinder with an optical viewfinder and a level staff
Bathymetric measurements of water bodies in the craters were also taken using a scaled telescopic arm with measuring tape and weight
A manual geological probe was used to identify geological conditions on the walls of deeper craters in existing excavations (e.g
footings) and also in safe zones clear of unexploded bombs
environmental conditions) maps and data from the Geological Database of the Polish Geological Institute
In addition, we analysed archival mission reports and publications from the Air Force Historical Research Agency website (https://www.afhra.af.mil), the National Archives (https://www.archives.gov) and The Fifteenth Air Force (https://15thaf.org)
as well as scientific literature on the Allied air offensive against the Third Reich and other sources that document warfare in Silesia and its material remains
water is present either on the surface of sandy
silty terraces or as a shallow water table

Flak battery near Dziergowice: 1) location; 2) bombardment area; 3) bombardment direction (figure prepared by Jan Maciej Waga
The central peak comprises slightly heavier material
while a mineral-organic suspension with a lower specific gravity accumulates around it
Those soil particles that are thrown almost vertically upwards fall on the crater's surface
while the rest are scattered around the bomb impact site
The second phase involves slower processes
in which material from crater edges and slopes slumps onto its base
which had already been covered with sediments
resembles a plate rather than a crater on the surface
Where a bomb penetrates a thicker layer of dry earth and the base of the crater reaches below the groundwater table
an outflow of floating earth from the lower layers surrounding the crater could occur
A higher ridge than in the case described above then forms at the edge of the crater
Dynamic secondary processes take place on the slopes of explosion craters situated in waterlogged areas and in those areas where groundwater can be found at shallow depths
such as animal trampling of the crater edges and perforation of their slopes by rooting and burrowing
Craters located in areas with a deeper water table are smaller in diameter
and filled to a lesser extent with sediment
as material from their slopes is transported more slowly towards the base
Landforms of this type can be found in area ‘c’
The area around the former foresters' lodge in Dąbrowa (the landscape is transformed as a result of improper forest management): a) site of the former camp for Belgian and French prisoners of war; b) anti-aircraft battery earthworks; c) well-preserved bomb craters; d) partly backfilled craters; e) heaps of soil and rootstocks (figure prepared by Jan Maciej Waga
In order to preserve the memory of those events
selected sets (at least) of such forms should be studied
such remnants of war should be safeguarded in a manner that recognises the complementary significance of both their cultural/historical and natural/ecological values
We would like to thank the two anonymous reviewers for their useful suggestions that greatly improved the manuscript

But recently unsealed court records accuse him of worse: a June 2009 murder over gambling losses in his native Poland.
Kasprzak, 57, a naturalized U.S. citizen, now faces possible extradition to Poland, where authorities consider him a fugitive and seek his return.
He appeared this week before a federal magistrate judge in Tampa and was denied bail, pending further proceedings.
Court and jail records describe him as homeless and living in motels in the Tampa Bay area and Orlando, although he has also stayed with friends on Third Avenue in St. Petersburg and appears to have been married several times.
Polish authorities place him at a card game on June 27, 2009, in the town of Kedzierzyn-Kozle, where witnesses said he complained that a man named Jan Mazurkiewicz cheated.
Information from a 2012 Polish arrest is incorporated into the U.S. criminal complaint that brought Kasprzak to court. Poland has an extradition treaty with the United States.
"Over the course of the night," the complaint states, "Kasprzak lost over 2,500 Polish Zloty to Mazurkiewicz, which is approximately $700 in United States Currency."
The next morning, witnesses saw the two men leave in Kasprzak's green Jaguar after he complained that he would not play cards again because he never won, the record states.
A bicyclist found the victim's remains in a ditch five days later, shot in the head and torso.
By then, Kasprzak had flown from Poland to Chicago, the court record states. Gunpowder residue and the victim's blood were later found in the Jaguar, which Kasprzak sold to a girlfriend before he left the country, Polish authorities allege.
Magistrate Judge Thomas McCoun's order detaining Kasprzak noted that he has a valid passport and has traveled internationally in recent years.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show no state arrests for him from late 2004 to late 2009.
Six months after the slaying in Poland, the Pinellas Park Police Department arrested Kasprzak on a shoplifting charge. He's been arrested 12 times since then — by Clearwater police and by sheriff's deputies in Pinellas, Pasco and Orange counties.
It's unclear what triggered the extradition proceedings now and not sooner.
Cecilia Barreda, spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, which oversees that county's jail, said all inmates get screened through state and national crime databases but foreign-born inmates are further screened through an alien database.

Jako zwycięzca Ligi Mistrzów 2021 Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle otrzymała zaproszenie do udziału w rozgrywanych w grudniu w brazylijskim Betim Klubowych Mistrzostwach Świata
uwzględniając sytuację epidemiologiczną w trosce o zdrowie i bezpieczeństwo zespołu Klub zrezygnował z udziału w turnieju
mistrz Ameryki Południowej z 2019 i 2020r.)
Itas Trentino (finalista Ligi Mistrzów 2021)
UPCN Vóley (wicemistrz Ameryki Południowej z 2019 i 2020r.)
czeka nas wymagający mecz Ligi Mistrzów i wyjazd do Nowosybirska
co logistycznie byłoby trudno pogodzić – przyznał prezes ZAKSA S.A
