The parents of Kielce Gussie, the woman who delivered the first reading at Pope Francis’ funeral, shared their thoughts on this momentous occasion.
Kielce Gussie, a 28-year-old journalist with Vatican Media, grew up in Middleburg and graduated from Bishop Snyder High School.
Her parents, Thomas and Arthurine Gussie, said Kielce didn’t find out she be reading during the funeral until Wednesday.
“I was surprised and very grateful because I know that she would do well,” said Arthurine Gussie, Kielce’s mother, in a phone interview.
Arthurine and her husband, Thomas, expressed their pride in their daughter’s achievement. As a Catholic family, they view Kielce’s participation in the funeral as a tremendous honor and blessing.
“Never in our wildest dreams did we even believe she would work at the Vatican, much less be able to read at the pope’s funeral,” Arthurine added.
Thomas Gussie described Kielce as outgoing, friendly, dedicated, and hardworking. He highlighted her commitment to her faith and her career, which has led her to this remarkable moment.
Arthurine noted that Kielce’s reading at the funeral fulfills a goal she set for herself when she moved to Rome years ago. “She wanted to be someone who would get a chance to talk about the saints and relate to the faith as a young person,” she said.
Kielce’s parents said they are proud of her accomplishments, but they are overwhelmed by the attention their daughter is getting.

Talant Dujshebaev is on the brink of the EHF Champions League Final Four with his sons
Olympics.com spoke to him about his training methods in an exclusive interview
As a player, Dujshebaev won three Olympic medals (gold in Barcelona 1992 with the Unified Team; and two bronzes with Spain, at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000) from the four Games he participated in (he finished seventh with Spain at Athens 2004). Dujshebaev also won gold at the 1993 World Championships with Russia and three European bronze medals with Spain.
If that already sounds like an incredible haul, he also won the Spanish league title (ASOBAL) on four occasions with different clubs, in addition to one Champions League title and one EHF Cup.
For these reasons and more, Dujshebaev is considered one of the best handball players in history.
As a coach, his medal tally does not lag far behind. He won the Champions League title with Ciudad Real in his first season as coach (2005/06). In total, he has three Spanish league titles and four in the Champions League. The last one was won in 2015/2016 with Kilece, the team he coaches today where his two sons Alex and Dani Dujshebaev play.
Ahead of the 2023 Final Four where Kielce will once again attempt to win the Champions League title, Dujshebaev explained his training methods to Olympics.com, as well as what it’s like to coach his sons and what the Olympics mean to handball players.
A stage of the Champions League Final 4 is taken as a reference - the peak of the season in which there is a title at stake and matches take place over a short period of time (in this case, a game on Saturday and another on Sunday).
_In the case of Polish side Kielce, the domestic league ends several weeks before the Final Four starts, while for other teams the final phase of the Champions League begins soon after the regular season ends. _
"A week before the Final Four we double the amount of training, with a microcycle at the beginning of the week followed by two friendly matches," Dujshebaev explains.
This is what a typical Champions League Final Four week looks like for Kielce:
"Resting is very important, especially mentally," says Talant Dujshebaev. "Since I became a coach, I have always said that the players need to take one day a week off, regardless of who we are playing against, whether it’s the World Cup, the Champions League, the league… it doesn’t matter. They have to be free for one day.” During the week of the Final Four, the day off is normally used to travel to Germany.
Dujshebaev also employs a specialist physical trainer. “He develops specific plans depending on the mental and physical load caused by the upcoming games and the trips we need to make,” he explains.
“For example, there are weeks in which some players return from national team camps or matches, while others don’t. He prepares their specific plans depending on those factors and each player works on his body in a different way. The most important thing is that the group is in the best condition possible for the key dates.”
This is why there are no gym sessions in the two days leading up to key matches. “We do a preventative warm-up and the physical trainer always runs it. The first half of those training sessions are his responsibility and then we work on tactics for 45 minutes following the warm-up.”
Dujshebaev plans the video analysis of an opponent during the first specific training session for that match. For example, the first viewing in preparation for the Final Four is carried out less than two weeks before the game. “Of course, during those weeks you can watch the same video again but we also hold more specific viewing sessions - one day focusing more on defence, another on attack, and so on.”
During pre-season, the team will take part in other sporting activities (for example, kayaking on a river) but the main purpose of this is team building. Other than those activities, Dujshebaev explains that they do not do anything out of the ordinary in their workouts.
“Everything we do is tailored to improving the physical condition and technical-tactical performance of the players within the world of handball,” he says.
Having said that, Dujshebaev does have one innovative method that he doesn’t hesitate to apply. “The best innovation is that when things go wrong you show more love to the boys. It is in that moment you need to love them more.”
"The best team is the one that knows how to adapt and have a plan B and C in all areas [of the game]. Many times we make mistakes and prepare our players in a better or worse way, but we also grow together with them," explains Dujshebaev.
On a team level, the difference between the best and the rest is the group's capacity to adapt. However, Dujshebaev explains that when it comes to individual players the premise is different.
"The best player never hides in difficult moments," he says.
"I've met players who were impressive, but when things weren’t going well they didn’t respond in the same way and that’s why, in my opinion, they will never be the greatest. Then I’ve met others who may play well or badly but in the moment of truth they are always there. They always turn up.
“That’s what I value most. It may be someone who is playful, or someone who is less playful; a more confident player, or someone who is more talented... but these players always turn up. They can make one or two mistakes but in the moment that matters they always maintain 99 per cent accuracy and, for me, those are the greatest in history.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Daniel Dujshebaev (@danidujshe44)
There’s no doubting the skills of Talant Dujshebaev as a player and a coach but something else separates him from the vast majority of trainers: his two sons Alex and Dani Dujshebaev, who both play for his team.
“People have asked me this question many times and it’s very tough to answer but at the same time very easy. It’s tough because they’re still your children and easy because, as I always say, I try to treat my players as if they were my own family. That’s why it’s not strange or difficult for me to be as demanding of my children as other players because I treat all my players with love. So in the team, I don’t have two children but 18 or 20 children".
Although there are many comparisons to be made between the play style of Dujshebaev senior with his eldest son Alex, Talant believes the resemblance isn’t as close as people say.
“I think Alex is much more tactically prepared than me. I am very sure of that. He has individual technical-tactical skills that are superior to mine. Dani is totally different - he’s bigger with different characteristics. Dani is a much better defender than both of us, so it’s easier for me to compare myself with Alex than Dani.”
There is also something that Talant believes his sons do better than him, and it can be found outside of the court.
“They are totally different to me. I always say they are much better people than I am, for certain. And that’s something I’m proud of - first of all, they are good people.”
And, according to Dujshebaev, handball is one of the main reasons behind this.
"Sport is something that has made us better people because if you join a team, you always look out for the good of the team, you have to make friends, etc. So I always advise all my friends when they have children - or now that I myself have two grandchildren - to get them to participate in sport. Sport keeps them off the street, makes them more disciplined, more coordinated, and healthier. And I can only welcome that."

Dujshebaev really enjoyed himself as a player
there is one that stands above the rest: The Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games where he won gold with the Unified Team
"The best memory I have as a player was the Olympic Games in Barcelona
going to my first Olympics and winning gold was my greatest experience."
Yet while Barcelona 1992 holds a special place in his heart
Dujshebaev acknowledges that any edition of the Olympics has something different and more special than other competitions
When explaining the effect the Olympics can have on an athlete
Dujshebaev uses the example of NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo whose reflections this season on the performance of his team
made headline news earlier in the NBA season
The Greek player was asked at a press conference whether his team had failed and responded with this answer:
to be able to provide the house for them or take care of your parents
won six championships; the other nine years was a failure
That's what you're telling me?"
Dujshebaev used the NBA star's speech to explain how special the Olympics are
"The other day we were shocked by Antetokounmpo's words about failure," he said
"I always say that failure is a word invented by people who are negative
pessimistic and who only know how to distinguish what is white from what is black
But there are so many things between black and white..
just being at the Olympic Games is amazing
Just living in the Olympic Village and seeing thousands and thousands of the best athletes from all over the world is amazing
it's something that’s difficult to repeat
Everything at the Olympics is so wonderful
that it's really worth just trying to get there
That's why it is important to at least try
I always tell my boys that failure is a word we have to remove from our minds."

The first leg of the Machineseeker EHF Champions League 2024/25 play-offs opened Wednesday with both German teams taking commanding away wins
Füchse Berlin came from behind to defeat Industria Kielce 33:27 in the Match of the Week in Poland
just hours after SC Magdeburg took a 30:26 win at Dinamo Bucuresti
Both return matches are scheduled for next Wednesday
Lasse Andersson contributed a stunning 12 goals to Füchse's triumph over Kielce
after the hosts had led the MOTW for most of the game until the visitors took command in the closing stages
two-time champions Magdeburg already did the damage in the first half
building a five-goal lead against a team that sometimes looked "like zombies," as Dinamo head coach David Davis put it during a team timeout
MOTW: Industria Kielce (POL) vs Füchse Berlin (GER) 27:33 (14:12)
Kielce opened the MOTW firing on all cylinders
And the team in yellow and blue made the atmosphere in the arena even warmer as a couple of saves by Milosz Walach and two goals from Dylan Nahi put the hosts up by three (4:1) after three minutes
who scored three of his 12 goals in the first quarter
and making the most of their opponents’ turnovers

Dinamo Bucuresti (ROU) vs SC Magdeburg (GER) 26:30 (11:16)
Despite the Dinamo fans having turned up in numbers to support the hosts
Magdeburg enjoyed the best start in the game
With Felix Claar on fine form and making the most of their opponents’ offensive difficulties
the visitors took an early three-goal advantage (6:3) after nine minutes
A team timeout taken shortly after by Dinamo head coach David Davis didn't change much as his players struggled to find solutions against SCM’s tight defence
Haukur Thrastarson finally manage to get past Nikola Portner
but by then the visitors were already up by seven
SCM did not let their foot off the pedal for the rest of the first half and headed back to the dressing rooms leading by five: 16:11
The break did not give the opportunity to the Romanian side to really gather their thoughts
They first failed to narrow the gap to four goals when Branko Vujovic missed his seven-metre throw
Magdeburg remained in control with Albin Lagergren and Felix Claar their main offensive assets
The difference between the two teams remained between four and six goals throughout the last quarter
as Ómar Ingi Magnusson answered each goal scored by Alex Pascual or Frederik Ladefoged
the Romanian side was able to come closer on the scoreboard and Yoav Lumbroso reduced the deficit to three goals before Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson scored one last goal to give Magdeburg a proper four-goal advantage (30:26) before the return leg in Germany next week

It took almost five minutes for Janus Smárason to finally score Szeged’s first goal
by which time the Hungarian side was already trailing by three
a quick timeout called by coach Michael Appelgren helped them regain their footing
Right-winger Mario Šoštarič played a crucial role in Szeged’s comeback
His pace and fast-break efficiency added much-needed dynamic to the team’s attack
Szeged even carved out a three-goal advantage
the teams went into the dressing rooms level at 13:13
Despite Roland Mikler pulling off a series of outstanding saves to keep Szeged in contention
his team struggled to find a way past Sergey Hernández at the other end
A five-goal unanswered run saw SCM surge ahead by five
with Albin Lagergren scoring his fourth goal to extend the gap with eight minutes remaining
HC Zagreb (CRO) vs Industria Kielce (POL) 26:27 (12:15)
Timur Dibirov was all smiles as he emerged from the dressing room ahead of his final-ever EHF Champions League match

who made three crucial saves in the opening seven minutes
the hosts surged to an early three-goal lead (5:2)
making an early goalkeeper change and levelling the score five minutes later with a three-goal run
adding another four unanswered goals to establish their biggest lead of the first half
After the break Zagreb returned to the court with renewed determination
netting five unanswered goals - including three from Damian Przytula - to take a two-goal lead by the 37th minute

A crucial goal from Michal Olejniczak and a last defensive stand secured Kielce's place in the play-offs with a narrow victory (27:26)
Barça (ESP) vs Kolstad Håndbold (NOR) 35:27 (18:13)
Just because Barça had already secured top spot in the group did not mean they would take it easy on home court — and they proved it from the outset
With Emil Nielsen in top form and Melvyn Richardson scoring three times in the opening ten minutes
the Spanish side established an early four-goal lead (8:4)
a timeout helped Kolstad regain their footing
With Simon Jeppsson orchestrating the attack
the Norwegian team drew level when Sigvaldi Guðjónsson finished a fast break in the 18th minute
With Richardson stepping up again - netting five times in the first half - the hosts went into the break with a five-goal cushion (18:13)
they became almost impossible for Kolstad to contain
the Blaugranas extended their lead to seven within three minutes of the restart
Despite Jeppsson’s standout performance - finishing as the game’s top scorer with ten goals - Kolstad never managed to close the gap
MOTW: HBC Nantes (FRA) vs Aalborg Håndbold (DEN) 29:29 (18:14)
Nantes were missing their three centre backs at throw-off due to injuries
The hosts were not fooled by their opponents’ seven-against-six offence at the start of the game
and they took control right from the outset
With Julien Bos having an amazing day and Ignacio Biosca making some crucial saves
the French side were ahead by four after 17 minutes (11:7)
the visitors were never able to close the gap before the break
With Ayoub Abdi scoring one last lucky goal just before half-time
Nantes were still ahead by four (18:14) and virtually in the quarter-finals
things worsened for the French team right after the start of the second half when Nicolas Tournat was sent off by the referees
and Aalborg began to close the gap on the scoreboard
Thanks to the power of Marinus Munk and a couple of saves from Fabian Norsten
the visitors gradually made their comeback and equalised 15 minutes before the final whistle (24-24)
Despite Ivan Pesic making two crucial saves in the dying seconds
Nantes were unable to regain the upper hand
Thibaud Briet’s final attempt failed to reach the goal
allowing Aalborg’s players to celebrate their qualification for the quarter-finals

Events later referred to as the „Kielce pogrom” took place mainly in the building on 7/9 Planty Street
Except of the tenants the building also served as home to various Jewish institutions (Jewish Committee
was not the only arena of tragic events
Pogroms of Jews also took place in other locations in Kielce and in trains going through the town on that day
definitively determining the number of victims is impossible
There are at least five lists of victims of the pogrom
including the Joint list of July 1946 consists of 39 surnames (32 + 7 unknown surnames)
The complete list of surnames includes 52 items
The causes of the Kielce pogrom can be identified as independent actions of the military
militia and some of the officials of the Ministry of Public Security of Poland
The immediate reason for them to take these actions against local Jews was the rumor of kidnapping of an 8-year-old Henryk Błaszczyk
shoemaker Walenty Błaszczyk reported him missing on the very same day at around 11 p.m
The boy returned home by himself two days later
came to militia station claiming that for all this time his son was kept in the basement by Jews
once again appeared in the militia station
According to their testimonies unknown man gave the boy a package in the street and asked him to carry it to his home
He offered him 20 złoty for doing this
After getting there the man allegedly took the package away from little Henryk and locked him in the basement
where few other children had already been kept
On the way to the station Henryk pointed at the building on 7 Planty Street and identified it as the place where he had been locked
He also identified the man who kidnapped him
The building was within the distance of 200 meters from the militia station
Later on testimonies of both Błaszczyks proved to be complete bogus
the boy went to the village situated 20 kilometers from Kielce
where he had lived with his family during the occupation
He made the story on being kidnapped and locked only to avoid the punishment.
chief of the station, sergeant Edmund Zagórski dispatched patrol consisting of six of his men who
together with Walenty and Henryk Błaszczyk went to Plant Street
After getting the militia men arrested the man by the name of Kalman Singer whom the boy identified as the culprit and returned with him to the station
Another patrol was sent to Planty Street with orders to search the building
On their way to location they were telling the passerby about alleged abductions of Christian children by Jews with intention of using them as victims of ritual killings
After searching the building it was obvious that the story told by Błaszczyks could not be true
as the building on 7/9 Planty Street had no basement
The outbreak of violence began in the morning of the 4th of July
The first shots were fired by the servicemen inside of the building
After entering inside soldiers were dragging Jews out of their hidings and bringing them outside where the mob
were shot or stabbed with bayonets and other blunt instruments
Two women were thrown out of the windows and killed by the mob in the street
Efforts by representatives of various authorities and Catholic Church to calm the mob down were ineffective and proved to be fruitless
Civilians as well as soldiers were robbing their victims and plundering their belongings left in the building.
The Jews „hunt” took place also at the stations along Kielce-Częstochowa railway line
On the trains and at the stations in Kielce region about 30 Jews were killed on that day
The first phase of the pogrom lasted until noon
and the second began when workers from „Ludwików” factory arrived at Planty Street
however it did not utterly calm anti Jewish mood
Immediately after the pogrom anti Jewish rally was held
The mob demonstrated also in front of the hospital in which wounded Jews were treated
The events referred to as the „Kielce pogrom” resulted in about 10 trials of people holding various kind of responsibility for what had happened
head of the Public Security office in Kielce
Few capital punishments were adjudged (convicts were executed)
In many cases during the trials the law was violated
some of them found themselves in the court room by utter accident.
There are various theories on the causes that led to those events
Among the most popular is the one scribing them to provocation of Soviet or Polish security forces
In the report of the investigation held by the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) published in 2006 it claims that the evidence unabled verifying these hypothesis
As the most probable cause of the tragic events in Kielce in 1946 IPN considers the unfortunate course of events caused by coincidence of historical and contemporary nature and claims that those events were spontaneous rather than staged
However the research on the matter is difficult due to the fact some of the documents were destroyed

Korona Kielce is playing home against Puszcza Niepolomice at Stadion Miejski on Fri
An injury-ridden Industria Kielce came back in the first half and produced probably their most consistent attacking performance of the season against Kolstad
while Veszprém HC won their fourth match of the season
Sporting CP extended their run without a loss to five matches with a dramatic
with the German side playing without goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev and top scorer Mathias Gidsel. PSG also mounted a comeback against Dinamo in the last 10 minutes to take a 35:33 win
while Orlen Wisla Plock secured their maiden win of the season
with a defensive masterclass against Eurofarm Pelister
Veszprém HC (HUN) vs Fredericia Håndbold Klub (DEN) 34:32 (16:12)
It was not a vintage performance from Veszprém
but two points are two points against Fredericia who finally came to grips with the requirements in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League
The Danes have previously lost all matches by at least six goals
they hovered around the four-five goals mark
cutting Veszprém’s lead to a single goal with nine minutes to go
the Hungarian champions had too much depth
with French pair Nedim Remili and Hugo Descat combining for 14 goals
their fourth in five matches so far this season
Paris Saint-Germain Handball (FRA) vs Dinamo Bucuresti (ROU) 35:32 (16:19)
A 4:0 run between the 51st and the 55th minutes was decisive for PSG Handball in the battle against Dinamo
with the French side once again struggling to keep their rhythm throughout the whole 60 minutes
Under the looks of former PSG players Daniel Narcisse and Nikola Karabatic
the French champions finally broke through thanks to their superior shooting efficiency (71 per cent as opposed to Dinamo’s 60 per cent)
as the Romanian side simply could not keep the rhythm until the end
which means coach Raul Gonzalez still has a long way to go to fix things
but now the French side jumped on the third place in the standings
yet with back-to-back losses against Veszprém and PSG
Orlen Wisla Plock (POL) vs HC Eurofarm Pelister (MKD) 26:18 (13:11)
One week after Pelister stopped their 21-match losing streak in the European premium competition
the North Macedonian side conceded yet another loss
which conceded only four goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half
constantly applying the right pressure on Pelister
the 18 goals conceded by the Polish champions is the lowest number of goals conceded by Plock in a match in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League
tying the record set against Montpellier HB in 2024 and Riihimaen Cocks in 2018
Sporting CP (POR) vs Füchse Berlin (GER) 35:33 (21:19)
Füchse did not have their starting goalkeeper
in the roster for the match against Sporting CP and that could be seen throughout the crucial moments
but conceded a turnover and Sporting’s Martim Costa
to secure a 35:33 win for the Portuguese side
the dark horse of this season's EHF Champions League
are the only unbeaten team in the group and lead the way with nine points
while the German side conceded the second loss in five matches and are still fourth
Kolstad Håndball (NOR) vs Industria Kielce (POL) 32:33 (17:17)
A 15:8 run spanning for over 20 minutes saw Kielce retake the reigns and cancel a four-goal lead from Kolstad
with eight goals from left winger Dylan Nahi
And although it looked like the Polish side was going to inflict the fourth loss in five matches for Kolstad
adding more pressure to the Norwegian side
today's hosts cancelled a five-goal Kielce lead
despite Simen Ulstad Lyse scored with seven seconds left to make it 32:32
the MVP of the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4 in 2022 kept his focus converting a halfway court
to give Kielce their third win in five matches and deliver Kolstad a bitter blow
Norwegian side now has four losses in five games as they are rock bottom in their group
This story is about second chances—both for forgotten metal forms and ideas that took on sculptural form
an artist associated with Kielce for years
found seven huge bells in a scrapyard—industrial fragments of old crushers
This is how five compositions were born; now
– The first bell I rang sounded for three minutes; that's when I knew I had stumbled upon something absolutely unique – the artist recalls
This experience triggered an entire creative process – from revisiting the scrapyard to creating five sculptural installations
which will take place on 26 April will include not only a presentation of sculptures
but also a spectacular performance with a narrator
music and bell ringers assigned to each installation
The sculptures will also be accompanied by an exhibition of paintings by Professor Małgorzata Bielecka
whose large-format paintings will form the background of the event
The installations cover a variety of topics
dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and Pope Francis, The Bell of Notre Dame – with fragments of burnt wood referring to the tragic fire of the Paris cathedral
inspired by the sound of winning the fight against cancer
The most colourful and joyful installation is Carnival in Venice – three bells surrounded by eleven Harlequin figures
– These works are more than just sculptures
emotions and deep spirituality – says Sławomir Micek. – Every composition has its source – personal
emphasises the long-term cooperation with the artist
the sculpture Galileo prepared on the occasion of the 25th anniversary, Column of Time
and also In Chariots—currently decorating the space in front of the entrance to the exhibition centre
– Sławomir Micek is not only a sculptor
but also the author of many of our statuettes and fair medals – adds the president. – His work is in line with the DNA of Targi Kielce – it combines art
The exhibition can be admired during the "Home

On 4 July 1946, a mob of local Poles massacred dozens of Jews in the southeastern Polish town of Kielce
Before the war some 24,000 Jews lived in Kielce
nearly all of whom were murdered in the Holocaust
The pogrom occurred several days after nine-year-old Henryk Blaszczyk went missing in Kielce
he in a bid to avoid punishment for running away from home
told his parents and police that he had been kidnapped and detained in the basement of the local Jewish Committee building
which sheltered up to 180 Jews and housed various Jewish institutions operating in Kielce
Despite the questionable credibility of the boy’s account
a large crowd of angry Poles gathered outside the building and word quickly spread that the Jews had held him to get Christian blood for ritual purposes
Polish soldiers and policemen entered and disarmed the Jewish residents
In the ensuing chaos several Jews inside the building were killed in cold blood
the angry crowd outside began to beat the Jews
and police had killed 42 Jews and injured 40 others
surviving Jews and local residents buried the victims in a mass grave in the Jewish cemetery
While the government executed nine of the assailants shortly thereafter and a few months later indicted others for their participation
the pogrom sparked intense fear in the already traumatized postwar Polish Jewish community
It would become a symbol of the uncertain future of Jewish life in Eastern Europe in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust and would convince many Polish Jews that they had no future in the country
the most lethal of a whole series of acts of lethal violence against Jews
precipitated a mass exodus of Polish Jewry
Appeals to the Church to forcefully intervene to discourage such violence largely fell on deaf ears and instead the Jews were blamed for imposing the Communist system on Poland
“[Kielce] really is a symbol of the exodus of Jewish survivors from Poland, and a symbol sometimes that there is no future in Poland for Jews,” said Joanna Sliwa
a historian with the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany
She added that “despite what Jews had endured during the Holocaust
and despite the fact that the local Polish population had observed all that
had witnessed all of that … Jews cannot feel safe in Poland.”
Polish Foreign Minister Dariusz Rosati wrote to the World Jewish Congress asking for forgiveness for the Kielce Pogrom: "The new democratic Poland deeply regrets and mourns all the injustices suffered by the Jewish people."
