(Photo by Mark LoMoglio/NHLI via Getty Images) an emergency backup goaltender is summoned when illness and injury arise Both have no clue when the call will arrive and both have to be prepared for any eventuality Kyle Konin had no reason to think he would find himself on the Philadelphia bench the evening of Nov especially since the Flyers carry three goalies he was working at his Clearwater home that day when Barry Hanrahan who had served as an emergency goalie twice previously was asked if he could be the team’s emergency backup goaltender (EBUG) that night at Amalie Arena against the Lightning rookie Alexei Kolosov took over and was in goal for a Nov 5 loss at Carolina with fellow rookie Ivan Fedotov backing up That was the plan as well in Tampa two nights later with Ersson still out was scuttled when Kolosov left the morning skate with a lower body injury Konin’s phone buzzed at about noon with Hanrahan on the other end who began the day with as many career wins in the NHL as Konin: zip who started with both Kolosov and Ersson injured.” Konin chose to wear his black Lightning-themed mask which would have been quite a sight if the 26-year-old Delaware native had to go between the pipes in a Flyers’ sweater (Coach John Tortorella surely would have been amused.) “I figured black looked better with Flyers colors than a blue mask I have,” he said which is kind of a nod to past Lightning players and (team founder Phil) Esposito It is like a history of the Lightning mask.” “The experience was really cool,” said Konin It was a very loose locker room with everyone enjoying being around each other Kyle Konin's Tampa Bay Lightning mask that he used during pregame warmups as a member of the .. Konin was eight years old when his father accepted a faculty position in the department of orthopedics and sports medicine at the University of South Florida He lived on both sides of Tampa Bay and often went to Lightning games with his family Konin played as a youth and through his teen years at prep schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts That was followed by a junior career in a few cities where he played club hockey at Grand Valley State University the college experience lasted all of six months before he returned to the Sunshine State It was Konin’s experience playing as a youth in Tampa that ultimately led him to becoming the Lightning’s EBUG He was initially contacted about helping the team at practice before it left to play in the summer 2020 playoff bubbles of Toronto and Edmonton “A lot of the Lightning players’ kids played youth hockey Mathieu Garon and many other guys plugged into the area,” he said “Someone who knew I was back in the area sent me a text I will come out to practice.’ I thought it was just going to be a couple of practices during Covid.” general manager Julien BriseBois ultimately asked Konin if he wanted to officially be the team’s emergency goalie For the past four years he has pitched in when either of Tampa Bay’s goaltenders His phone also lights up when a third goalie might otherwise be needed including when injured players go through drills before and/or after practice “Sometimes it can get pretty busy,” said Konin while in the midst of a busy week in late November in which the Lightning played four games in six days “There are also stretches when I go a month without getting a call but to take a month off from action and then hop into a (week where I get called three of four times) can be tough The team is in mid-season form and practices are intense.” Louis Blues emergency goaltender Kyle Konin before an NHL hockey game Thursday 2021 on the back end of a home-and-home with the Bolts when No 1 goalie Jordan Binnington tested positive for Covid That left then-coach Craig Berube with only one goalie that I was going to dress that night,” he said “That was very exciting because it was the first time who cannot say enough good things about how captain Ryan O’Reilly went out of his way to make him feel comfortable settled in during the pregame skate and did his job between the pipes before watching a 4-2 loss from the bench It was what happened immediately prior to the pregame skate that was most memorable “They had me go out without my mask and do a rookie lap,” he said Konin’s second time dressing for game was with the Lightning last April 1 against Detroit It was no laughing matter when backup goalie Jonas Johansson sustained a lower-body injury Konin was asked to join Vasilevskiy for the morning skate and be ready to back up the ‘Big Cat’ that night Kyle Konin began painting masks for UConn and other universities when he was in high school Konin has been intrigued by art ever since he can remember Designs on goaltenders’ masks have long captivated his attention “I would always get in trouble for doodling in class,” he said “When I became a goalie and saw how all the NHL goalies have their masks painted didn’t want to pay $1,000 to get a mask painted for a seven-year-old kid.” That seven-year-old kid will paint about 150 masks this year Things got serious when he was in high school and Hockey East members UConn and UMass “Those are pretty big schools to enlist a high school artist,” he said The growth of Konin’s business, which has evolved into Nujax Airbrush with his wife has been such that he needed to address how he conducts his workload The time commitment got to be too much especially with more and more work orders coming in which is generally requires 20 hours per mask “It’s a slow process to get into the NHL,” said Konin who has been married to Hannah for three years with the couple is expecting their first child Konin has a few clients currently with NHL affiliates such as Jacob Ingram a sixth-round selection of the Kings in 2018 who was drafted in the second round by the Blackhawks in 2021 If Konin could design a mask for one goaltender “One thousand percent it would be Jonathan Quick,” he said He switched painters (a couple of years ago) and I tried my hardest to get in with him It would have been cool if he was my first NHL goalie to paint for.” Lightning emergency goalie Kyle Konin dressed for the Philadelphia Flyers No Emergency goaltenders throughout the NHL are tight knit A 32-team league makes for a small community of A resident of the Tampa Bay area, this will be the third he has dressed as an emergency backup in the last four seasons. In Dec. 2021, he was the backup for the Ville Husso and the St. Louis Blues as they lost to the Lightning 4-2 Then, last April, the West Kingston, Rhode Island native dressed for Tampa, sitting on the bench as Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Bolts fell to the Detroit Red Wings you might want to take the Lightning to beat the Flyers by a final score of 4-2 tonight Konin played collegiately for one season at Grand Valley State a member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association He played junior hockey for the Vermont Lumberjacks and New Hampshire Avalanche of the Eastern Hockey League and the Atlanta Capitals of the North American Tier-III Hockey League Fedotov will be making his fourth start of the season, still looking for the first win of his NHL career. convention still applies to the mega-machines that serve miners faithfully for years and dig up thousands of tons of earth An example of this is Dolores – a "girl" of impressive size which proudly towers in a field near the Jóźwin open-pit coal mine part of the coal basin located near the Polish city of Konin And it is Dolores that will have the honor of "telling" tourists about the region’s coal past but a symbol of the transformation of the region and it will mark the beginning of a special new branch of the Konin Regional Museum The aim is to preserve the local cultural heritage which over the years has been mainly associated with coal mining.  The bucket-wheel excavator is a SRs-1800 model It is an emblematic representative of the era of heavy mining equipment hydraulic system and enormous capacity make the machine not only a powerful digging tool but also a witness to a time when such giant machines were the engine of industrial progress in mining regions visited Dolores on-site and got acquainted with its impressive dimensions The history of the machine is as impressive as its size Dolores spent the first few years of its existence in Spain It served miners in the Asturias region faithfully Then the machine was transported to Poland in 2009 transporting such equipment is no easy task It took about 400 trucks and 4 ships to move all the parts of the excavators to their new home – the mines in the Konin region Dolores and Carmen played a key role in the mining operations in the region and thus lived their second lives until 2020 but Dolores got a chance to live even a third life the excavator was owned by the Ze Pak group which was actively involved in the transformation of the region We will tell you more about ZePak and its “Work After Coal” project in a special podcast episode a project was initiated to preserve the mining identity and to save the Dolores excavator The technical operation to remove the machine from the mine took about five months It was brought to the surface via a specially built ramp The value of Dolores is currently estimated at $500,000 The region around Konin has deep 70-year-old mining roots mainly associated with the extraction of lignite coal open-pit mines in this area have contributed to Poland's significant energy autonomy supplying power plants and industrial enterprises The region's economy flourished during this time as people flocked to work there Mining has shaped the culture and identity of local communities the history of tireless work in the mines is celebrated every year on December 4 concerts and other cultural events are organized bringing together both miners and the local community to celebrate the legacy of labor and the history of mining This holiday is not only a religious event but also a cultural ritual that unites people and reminds them of the importance of the mining tradition and the identity of the region with the exit from coal looming on the horizon the legacy of these mining operations remains a living part of the region and sites like the Dolores excavator serve as powerful monuments telling the story of mining and inspiring future generations she is an emotional bridge between the past and the future a living witness to a time when such machines were the true engines of industrial progress complements the story of these giant machines Views and starter Ivan Fedotov became incapacitated 1 Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson unavailable on Thursday due to a lower-body injury sustained on Nov rookie Aleksei Kolosov was slated to get the start against the Lightning Kolosov himself sustained a lower-body injury during the morning skate Fedotov got the start and the Flyers signed 26-year-old Konin to an amateur tryout contract in order for him to dress as the backup goaltender in the game Formerly a collegiate goaltender at Grand Valley State University Konin has twice previously dressed for games as an EBUG: Dec Perhaps the most famous EBUG in NHL history was 31-year-old Alfie Moore A talented but inconsistent NHL goaltender who formerly backed up Hockey Hall of Famer Roy Worters with the New York Americans during the 1938 Stanley Cup Final between the Chicago Black Hawks (the team name was spelled as two words in that era) and Toronto Maple Leafs Starting goaltender Mike Karakas was unable to play Game 1 of the series and backup Paul Goodman was not with the team the Black Hawks hastily recruited Toronto native Moore (whose minor league season with the Pittsburgh Hornets was finished) to start the opening game of the best-of-five series Moore backstopped the Black Hawks to 3-1 win Chicago went on to win the series and capture the Cup the team has dressed a wide array of backup goaltenders who did not appear in any games for the team Most were minor league farmhands (Rejean Lemelin Scott Munroe or Kirill Ustimenko) or former NHLers (such as Jamie Storr who served as the backup goalie for several portions of December 2005 or Jason Bacashihua in February and March of 2012) who backed up in a pinch some of these goalies later appeared in NHL games with other organizations who most went on to spend several NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins and later became the Flyers' longtime goaltending coach there has been a smattering of "true" EBUGs --- backups who never otherwise played professional hockey or were active or former minor league netminders who were not under NHL contract to the Flyers -- who have dressed in one more games as the Flyers backup without getting into a game after the tragic passing of Pelle Lindbergh in Nov Darrren Jensen temporarily became the Flyers starter after being recalled from the AHL's Hershey Bears Kalamazoo Wings (IHL) goaltender Mike Bloski backed up Jensen until Froese was able to return trainer Dave "Sudsy" Settlemyre dressed as a backup for the NHL club and actually appeared in a combined five games for the Philadelphia Firebirds (NAHL) and Maine Mariners (AHL) when they were Flyers farm teams Temple University alum Eric Semborski dressed as Chicago's backup for their Dec game against the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center Semborski became an in-game EBUG for the Flyers Steve Mason had the flu and Michal Neuvirth had health scare during the first period and was briefly hospitalized for observation Anthony Stolarz entered the game to replace Neuvirth with emergency backup Semborski waiting in the wings in uniform Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol attempted to insert Semborski to finish the game because Stolarz was neither injured nor ill Semborski was not permitted to enter the game in a combined shutout between Neuvirth and Stolarz EBUGs have been at the ready when there was an injury or illness but the original starter's situation was not so severe that the NHLer was unable to at least remain on the bench if he had to re-enter for an incapacitated relief goalie once hastily suited up for EBUG duty for Philly but his Petersburg resident and former college goaltender who paints goalie masks for a living. About seven hours later, Konin, 23, was suited up for the Blues as their backup goalie for their game against the Lightning at Amalie Arena. Though he didn’t play, Konin led the team onto the ice for warmups and sat on the bench. “I didn’t expect any of that,” Konin said. “I’d say everything just surpassed my expectations. I guess my expectation was that I was going to get a jersey and get to sit on the bench.” Konin is the emergency backup goaltender for Lightning home games. Each NHL team has to have an emergency backup available at home games who can dress should either team need a goaltender in the 11th hour. It might be the rarest, and most interesting, opportunity in professional sports, when a normal person can go from spectator to participant, if only for a day. Most times, emergency goalies are never called upon for duty. St. Louis Blues emergency goaltender Kyle Konin warms up before Thursday's game against the Lightning at Amalie Arena [ CHRIS O'MEARA | AP ]But when Blues starter Jordan Binnington went into the league’s COVID-19 protocol Thursday morning and the team was unable to call up a backup from the AHL due to salary-cap issues, Konin was called into duty to back up Ville Husso. He spent most of his childhood in Clearwater, and his first time on skates was at a Lightning youth camp in Brandon. He once skated as the Thunder Kid before a Lightning game. His parents, Jeff and Gina, are Clearwater residents and Lightning season-ticket holders, but Thursday’s game wasn’t on their plan. So Jeff jumped online to buy seats behind the visitor’s bench, close enough to have a good view of the stool on which the backup goaltender sits and far enough away so the family wouldn’t be a distraction. Kyle’s wife, Hannah, and her family also were there. Let’s get started. Hours earlier, Konin had walked into a dressing room full of strangers who became his teammates for the night. The Blues outfitted him with a jersey, but the rest of his gear was from the equipment bag he lugs to each home game, including the pants he wore with lightning bolts on the side. For warmups, Konin was prompted to the front of the visiting-team tunnel by captain Ryan O’Reilly to take his rookie lap, a tradition before a player’s first NHL game. Forward Vladimir Tarasenko tapped Konin with his stick, sending him out. Forward Brayden Schenn shouted, “Let’s lead the boys, ‘Konzy.’ No bucket (helmet).” “I was kind of against it for a while,” Konin said. “I was just like, I don’t know if it’s more of, like, a thing you have to earn or whatever. I just was kind of like, I don’t know if I should. But all the boys were like, ‘Oh, no, you’re going, you’re going.’ So at that point it was kind of like they decided that for me. “It was a good time, and it’s pretty cool to kind of get the full NHL experience.” A few rows above the bench, Konin’s parents watched with pride. Jeff told himself not to take video with his phone because he wanted to completely take in the moment. As the local emergency backup goaltender, Kyle attends every home game. He sits behind the home bench in Section 130 ready to grab his equipment bag and help immediately if either team loses a goaltender due to injury. But the timing of this opportunity — the Blues knew early in the day they’d need his help — allowed him the rare chance to be an NHL player for an entire day. [ Courtesy of Kyle Konin ]“I got the full experience for that,” Konin said. “Normally, you’re going to the game and just trying to stay mentally ready, but you can’t really do anything physically until something happens.” Konin’s path to hockey was as winding as the one that took him from Tampa Bay and back. His hockey ambitions, and those of younger brother Chris, took him north to a prep school in New Hampshire. After a stint in juniors, he played college hockey at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Konin was called in to skate on Sunday’s off day, and he knew heading into Monday that he would take the ice before morning skate to be in net for injured defenseman Mikhail Sergachev’s on-ice rehab session. That wasn’t unusual, as Konin often helps out when the Lightning need a spare goaltender during skates, practices and scrimmages. “I texted my dad in my family group chat,” Konin said. “And they’re like, ‘They’re pranking you. It’s April Fool’s.’” It’s turned out to be no joke. He did indeed dress for Monday’s game. “I kind of wish they told me after practice because your head is just going a million miles an hour and not even thinking about anything specific,” Konin said after morning skate. “Just crazy. ... I’m sure it’ll hit me later. I’m gong to try to go home and take a nap, but no chance I’m falling asleep.” Konin has been the Lightning’s EBUG for the past four seasons. He grew up a Lightning fan, spending most of his childhood in Clearwater. He went to youth camps in Brandon and skated on the ice as a Thunder Kid before a game at Amalie Arena. He was playing college hockey in Michigan in 2020 when the pandemic hit and he moved back to Florida to be with his parents, Jeff and Gina. He quickly immersed himself in the local hockey scene, making connections with Lightning alumni like John Tucker, Mathieu Garon, Dwayne Roloson and Filip Kuba. And soon enough, Konin found himself invited to a lot of gatherings and shootarounds because there was a need for goaltenders. Where the last government agreed with unions to keep the mines open until 2049, the incoming administration wants the share of renewable energy to increase to 68 percent by 2030 a percentage of the country’s power generation roughly equivalent to that provided by coal today It’s an end that’s been coming for years — despite earnest attempts to resist by unions and successive governments and Europe’s carbon pricing system have halved the number of collieries between 1990 and 2014 Its workforce has since been slashed by more than two-thirds in the culture and in the European Union’s climate policies Poland has been one of the most vocal opponents of the EU’s green agenda Even as other countries in the EU pushed for tougher targets Warsaw used every opportunity to advocate a slower pace.  The legacy of that effort lives on not only in EU targets that are less ambitious than they might otherwise have been but also in an emphasis on what advocates call a “just transition.” This is one that attempts to cushion the blows on those who stand to lose out as countries wean themselves from fossil fuels When Poland was given the opportunity to host the COP24 climate conference in 2018 it chose to hold the gathering in Katowice in the heart of its coal country — shining a spotlight on the impact the fight against climate change would have on tens of thousands of jobs Warsaw’s push has meant more money for historically polluting economies like Poland’s it won’t save the identity they’ve celebrated for decades But the hope is that it will mean enough assistance from Brussels and Warsaw to help the elderly end their careers with dignity and the youngest among them to build lives that aren’t dependent on a resource fueling the warming of the world Terms of Use An undisclosed injury to Jonas Johansson leads to the Lightning dipping into the eBUG pool there probably weren’t too many folks in the area that knew who Kyle Konin was despite the fact that he was often on the ice with many of the Tampa Bay Lightning superstars Petersburg resident is the Lightning’s emergency back-up goalie A lower-body injury to back-up goaltender Jonas Johansson has moved Konin to the active roster as Andrei Vasilevskiy’s back-up Could he be the next Scott Foster or David Ayers The 26-year-old from Rhode Island has been the Lightning’s eBUG since the 2020 season but hasn’t been called on by the team until tonight he has been on the ice when the Lightning needed an extra netminder for practice or helping players who are rehabbing like Mikhail Sergachev Konin’s last competitive action came with Grand Valley State University in 2019-20 During the COVID Pause he moved back to Florida to live with his parents and ended up playing with Lightning alumni like John Tucker While it’s the first time he’s suiting up for the Lightning it’s not the first time he’s been a back-up Louis Blues netminder Jordan Binnington entered COVID protocols and Konin got the call to be the back-up The Blues had him take a rookie lap before the game He didn’t get into the game, and chances are he won’t tonight, but he’s soaking it all in and, in his words enjoying a nice lunch before going back to his day job of painting hockey masks Konin does usually attend most of the Lightning’s home games and is always prepared to be called into action but ends up watching most of the action like we do If he does somehow end up in the game tonight, it will bring his story full circle. region and Konin The visit informed journalists about the EU’s cohesion policy and how the Just Transition Fund is supporting coal regions in Poland to make the transition to green energy sources journalists received a technical briefing on EU support for a just climate transition by DG Regio experts Marta Wnuk and Joanna Rylko This was followed by a visit to the Silesian Museum journalists were treated to a concert at the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra Both venues are in the Katowice cultural zone journalists met the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship Afterwards they were taken to see the renovated Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów The European Regional Development Fund co-funded both museums and the concert hall journalists were given a tour of Konin’s power plant and its open-pit coal mine Mr Chełstowski told journalists that the region had received about EUR 10 billion in EU funding in recent years as part of efforts to prevent job losses that will result from the move away from coal “Our goal was and is to be an example to Europe in the correct use of this money,” Greek newspaper Xronos-kozanis reported him saying The Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów was developed as part of an EU-funded project to revitalise and protect the post-industrial cultural heritage of Upper Silesia and create a unique cultural and educational offer for residents and visitors The project “Revitalisation and access to the post-industrial heritage of Upper Silesia” was co-financed under the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment for 2014-2020 of which the European Regional Development Fund contributed EUR 77.6 million (85%) The museum is part of the European Cultural Route of Industrial Heritage It is located in the former Huta Królewska power plant and recalls 200 years of the city’s industrial history The Katowice cultural zone was developed on the site of a coal mine that had been in operation since 1823 The Silesian Museum is located partly
