an emergency backup goaltender is summoned when illness and injury arise
Both have no clue when the call will arrive
and both have to be prepared for any eventuality
Kyle Konin had no reason to think he would find himself on the Philadelphia bench the evening of Nov
especially since the Flyers carry three goalies
he was working at his Clearwater home that day when Barry Hanrahan
who had served as an emergency goalie twice previously
was asked if he could be the team’s emergency backup goaltender (EBUG) that night at Amalie Arena against the Lightning
rookie Alexei Kolosov took over and was in goal for a Nov
5 loss at Carolina with fellow rookie Ivan Fedotov backing up
That was the plan as well in Tampa two nights later with Ersson still out
was scuttled when Kolosov left the morning skate with a lower body injury
Konin’s phone buzzed at about noon with Hanrahan on the other end
who began the day with as many career wins in the NHL as Konin: zip
who started with both Kolosov and Ersson injured.”
Konin chose to wear his black Lightning-themed mask
which would have been quite a sight if the 26-year-old Delaware native had to go between the pipes in a Flyers’ sweater
(Coach John Tortorella surely would have been amused.)
“I figured black looked better with Flyers colors than a blue mask I have,” he said
which is kind of a nod to past Lightning players and (team founder Phil) Esposito
It is like a history of the Lightning mask.”
“The experience was really cool,” said Konin
It was a very loose locker room with everyone enjoying being around each other
Kyle Konin's Tampa Bay Lightning mask that he used during pregame warmups as a member of the ..
Konin was eight years old when his father accepted a faculty position in the department of orthopedics and sports medicine at the University of South Florida
He lived on both sides of Tampa Bay and often went to Lightning games with his family
Konin played as a youth and through his teen years at prep schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts
That was followed by a junior career in a few cities
where he played club hockey at Grand Valley State University
the college experience lasted all of six months before he returned to the Sunshine State
It was Konin’s experience playing as a youth in Tampa that ultimately led him to becoming the Lightning’s EBUG
He was initially contacted about helping the team at practice before it left to play in the summer 2020 playoff bubbles of Toronto and Edmonton
“A lot of the Lightning players’ kids played youth hockey
Mathieu Garon and many other guys plugged into the area,” he said
“Someone who knew I was back in the area sent me a text
I will come out to practice.’ I thought it was just going to be a couple of practices during Covid.”
general manager Julien BriseBois ultimately asked Konin if he wanted to officially be the team’s emergency goalie
For the past four years he has pitched in when either of Tampa Bay’s goaltenders
His phone also lights up when a third goalie might otherwise be needed
including when injured players go through drills before and/or after practice
“Sometimes it can get pretty busy,” said Konin
while in the midst of a busy week in late November in which the Lightning played four games in six days
“There are also stretches when I go a month without getting a call
but to take a month off from action and then hop into a (week where I get called three of four times) can be tough
The team is in mid-season form and practices are intense.”
Louis Blues emergency goaltender Kyle Konin before an NHL hockey game Thursday
2021 on the back end of a home-and-home with the Bolts when No
1 goalie Jordan Binnington tested positive for Covid
That left then-coach Craig Berube with only one goalie
that I was going to dress that night,” he said
“That was very exciting because it was the first time
who cannot say enough good things about how captain Ryan O’Reilly
went out of his way to make him feel comfortable
settled in during the pregame skate and did his job between the pipes before watching a 4-2 loss from the bench
It was what happened immediately prior to the pregame skate that was most memorable
“They had me go out without my mask and do a rookie lap,” he said
Konin’s second time dressing for game was with the Lightning last April 1 against Detroit
It was no laughing matter when backup goalie Jonas Johansson sustained a lower-body injury
Konin was asked to join Vasilevskiy for the morning skate and be ready to back up the ‘Big Cat’ that night
Kyle Konin began painting masks for UConn and other universities when he was in high school
Konin has been intrigued by art ever since he can remember
Designs on goaltenders’ masks have long captivated his attention
“I would always get in trouble for doodling in class,” he said
“When I became a goalie and saw how all the NHL goalies have their masks painted
didn’t want to pay $1,000 to get a mask painted for a seven-year-old kid.”
That seven-year-old kid will paint about 150 masks this year
Things got serious when he was in high school and Hockey East members UConn and UMass
“Those are pretty big schools to enlist a high school artist,” he said
The growth of Konin’s business, which has evolved into Nujax Airbrush with his wife
has been such that he needed to address how he conducts his workload
The time commitment got to be too much especially with more and more work orders coming in
which is generally requires 20 hours per mask
“It’s a slow process to get into the NHL,” said Konin
who has been married to Hannah for three years with the couple is expecting their first child
Konin has a few clients currently with NHL affiliates such as Jacob Ingram
a sixth-round selection of the Kings in 2018
who was drafted in the second round by the Blackhawks in 2021
If Konin could design a mask for one goaltender
“One thousand percent it would be Jonathan Quick,” he said
He switched painters (a couple of years ago) and I tried my hardest to get in with him
It would have been cool if he was my first NHL goalie to paint for.”

Emergency goaltenders throughout the NHL are tight knit
A 32-team league makes for a small community of individuals
which provides a great sense of brotherhood
they meet annually in the resort town of Breckenridge
who is one of the youngest members of the group
Nobody understands the EBUG life unless you have done it
An even smaller sample consists of those who have actually played in a game
Three EBUGs have logged game time so far this decade: Thomas Hodges (Anaheim)
Matthew Berlin (Edmonton) and Jett Alexander (Toronto)
John Gibson started and left after one period due to injury
Anthony Stolarz took over and sustained an injury that also limited his outing to 20 minutes
Hodges started the third period with the score at tied at two
Hodges logged 16:48 and faced all of three shots
“I've never played in front of so many people,” Hodges told the media after the game
“Something I'm going to remember for the rest of my life
Konin may have such an experience at some point
The Philadelphia Flyers today announced that the club has signed goaltender Kyle Konin to an amateur tryout according to General Manager Daniel Briere
Aleksei Kolosov will not dress tonight due to a lower body injury
Konin who serves as an emergency back up in Tampa Bay has suited up in two games as an emergency backup: last for Tampa Bay on April 1
Konin played college hockey for Grand Valley State University from 2019-20
Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov is expected to get the start on Thursday in Tampa
ahead of their tilt against the Lightning tonight
Konin has been added to the Flyers roster in case Aleksei Kolosov cannot play tonight
Kolosov left the ice at morning skate today
and had to get seen by the Flyers training staff
Konin would be the EBUG/backup netminder to Ivan Fedotov

TAMPA -- With goalie Aleksei Kolosov out for Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning with a lower-body injury
the Philadelphia Flyers have signed Kyle Konin to an amateur tryout
Konin is the designated emergency backup goalie in Tampa Bay
Kolosov, who is 0-3-0 this season with a 3.92 goals-against average, was injured during the morning skate and is considered day to day. Ivan Fedotov (0-3-0
5.35 GAA) is expected to start for Philadelphia
Konin played college hockey for Grand Valley State University from 2019-20 and has served as the emergency goalie for the Lightning since 2021
Flyers goalie Aleksei Kolosov suffered an injury during morning skate and was later ruled out against the Lightning
the Flyers likely wouldn’t be able to get another goalie to the arena in time for puck drop to serve as backup
Without a viable option in close proximity
the Flyers have signed an emergency backup goalie
Lineup update: Aleksei Kolosov (lower body injury) will not dress tonight and is considered day-to-day. Goaltender Ivan Fedotov will start in net. In addition, the club has signed goaltender Kyle Konin to an amateur tryout. https://t.co/Ims6uB28wf
The Flyers announced the signing of Kyle Konin to an amateur tryout deal and will serve as backup against the Lightning
Ivan Fedotov is slated to serve as the Flyers starter
This isn’t the first time Konin has suited up as an emergency backup goalie in Tampa Bay
The first came in December of 2021 for the St
Louis Blues and most recently for the Lightning in April of 2024
he has not recorded a second of ice time in the NHL
The 26-year-old Konin played college hockey for Grand Valley State University for the 2019-20 season
The Flyers have stated that Kolosov is only out on a day-to-day basis
The usual starter Sam Ersson has been out with a lower-body injury of his own
Hockey fans love a good backup goalie and the Flyers and Lightning suddenly have a game to keep a close eye on

Representatives from Solaris Bus & Coach and MZK Konin signed a contract for the supply of five Urbino 18 hydrogen buses that will join the Polish city of Konin’s fleet in 2026
This investment continues Konin’s commitment to zero-emission hydrogen technology in public transport
Solaris provided the operator with an Urbino 12 hydrogen model
which was the first hydrogen bus used in public transport in Poland
MZK Konin has chosen to buy five units of the articulated version from the manufacturer
The Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen bus has already been put into service in several European cities
This contract marks the debut of the Solaris articulated hydrogen bus in Poland
our mission is to advance sustainable urban mobility
and it is exciting to see Konin investing in zero-emission technology,” says Mateusz Figaszewski
Institutional Partnerships & External Relations director at Solaris
“We’re proud to see the hydrogen-powered Solaris bus as part of this transformative journey
bringing comfort to passengers and cleaner air to the city.”
The 18-meter Solaris buses ordered by MZK in Konin will feature advanced hydrogen system
including a 100-kW hydrogen fuel cell and eight composite tanks
storing approximately 50 kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 350 bar
the vehicles will be equipped with Solaris High Power batteries to support the fuel cell at times of peak electricity demand
Powering the Urbino electric drive system is a 240-kW traction motor
Hydrogen-powered buses are an integral part of Solaris’ zero-emissions offer
Their primary advantage lies in their fully zero-emission operation
Additional benefits include long range — over 600 kilometers (based on eSORT test results) — a high passenger capacity and short refueling times
Solaris has already delivered 370 hydrogen-powered vehicles to 31 cities across 10 European countries
The Polish market is also showing interest in hydrogen technology
with Urbino hydrogen buses already in operation in Lublin
The purchase of hydrogen buses by MZK Konin is part of a larger regional project for low-emission public transport
Funded 90% by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW)
a transfer hub at the railway station and an expanded intelligent traffic management system for the city
About an hour before puck drop from their matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night, the Philadelphia Flyers announced they had signed goaltender Kyle Konin to an amateur tryout
who was announced to be the starter this morning
Ivan Fedotov has been tabbed as the starter for the Flyers
The name Konin might ring a bell to a few people. A resident of the Tampa Bay area, this will be the third he has dressed as an emergency backup in the last four seasons. In Dec. 2021, he was the backup for the Ville Husso and the St. Louis Blues as they lost to the Lightning 4-2
Then, last April, the West Kingston, Rhode Island native dressed for Tampa, sitting on the bench as Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Bolts fell to the Detroit Red Wings
you might want to take the Lightning to beat the Flyers by a final score of 4-2 tonight
Konin played collegiately for one season at Grand Valley State
a member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association
He played junior hockey for the Vermont Lumberjacks and New Hampshire Avalanche of the Eastern Hockey League
and the Atlanta Capitals of the North American Tier-III Hockey League
Fedotov will be making his fourth start of the season, still looking for the first win of his NHL career. The 27-year-old is 0-3 this season with a 5.35 goals-against average and a .821 save percentage. His last start was on Oct. 23 against the Washington Capitals
when he gave up four goals on 23 shots in a 6-3 loss
The Flyers (4-8-1) are tied with the Nashville Predators for the worst record in the NHL

It seems that this convention still applies to the mega-machines that serve miners faithfully for years and dig up thousands of tons of earth
An example of this is Dolores – a "girl" of impressive size
which proudly towers in a field near the Jóźwin open-pit coal mine
part of the coal basin located near the Polish city of Konin
And it is Dolores that will have the honor of "telling" tourists about the region’s coal past
but a symbol of the transformation of the region and it will mark the beginning of a special new branch of the Konin Regional Museum
The aim is to preserve the local cultural heritage
which over the years has been mainly associated with coal mining.
The bucket-wheel excavator is a SRs-1800 model
It is an emblematic representative of the era of heavy mining equipment
hydraulic system and enormous capacity make the machine not only a powerful digging tool but also a witness to a time when such giant machines were the engine of industrial progress in mining regions
visited Dolores on-site and got acquainted with its impressive dimensions
The history of the machine is as impressive as its size
Dolores spent the first few years of its existence in Spain
It served miners in the Asturias region faithfully
Then the machine was transported to Poland in 2009
transporting such equipment is no easy task
It took about 400 trucks and 4 ships to move all the parts of the excavators to their new home – the mines in the Konin region
Dolores and Carmen played a key role in the mining operations in the region and thus lived their second lives until 2020
but Dolores got a chance to live even a third life
the excavator was owned by the Ze Pak group
which was actively involved in the transformation of the region
We will tell you more about ZePak and its “Work After Coal” project in a special podcast episode
a project was initiated to preserve the mining identity and to save the Dolores excavator
The technical operation to remove the machine from the mine took about five months
It was brought to the surface via a specially built ramp
The value of Dolores is currently estimated at $500,000
The region around Konin has deep 70-year-old mining roots
mainly associated with the extraction of lignite coal
open-pit mines in this area have contributed to Poland's significant energy autonomy
supplying power plants and industrial enterprises
The region's economy flourished during this time as people flocked to work there
Mining has shaped the culture and identity of local communities
the history of tireless work in the mines is celebrated every year on December 4
concerts and other cultural events are organized
bringing together both miners and the local community to celebrate the legacy of labor and the history of mining
This holiday is not only a religious event but also a cultural ritual that unites people and reminds them of the importance of the mining tradition and the identity of the region
with the exit from coal looming on the horizon
the legacy of these mining operations remains a living part of the region
and sites like the Dolores excavator serve as powerful monuments
telling the story of mining and inspiring future generations
she is an emotional bridge between the past and the future
a living witness to a time when such machines were the true engines of industrial progress
complements the story of these giant machines

Kyle Konin will become the answer to a trivia question: What EBUG (emergency backup goaltender) would have come into the Flyers road game in Tampa Bay on Thursday if starter Ivan Fedotov became incapacitated
1 Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson unavailable on Thursday due to a lower-body injury sustained on Nov
rookie Aleksei Kolosov was slated to get the start against the Lightning
Kolosov himself sustained a lower-body injury during the morning skate
Fedotov got the start and the Flyers signed 26-year-old Konin to an amateur tryout contract in order for him to dress as the backup goaltender in the game
Formerly a collegiate goaltender at Grand Valley State University
Konin has twice previously dressed for games as an EBUG: Dec
Perhaps the most famous EBUG in NHL history was 31-year-old Alfie Moore
A talented but inconsistent NHL goaltender who formerly backed up Hockey Hall of Famer Roy Worters with the New York Americans
during the 1938 Stanley Cup Final between the Chicago Black Hawks (the team name was spelled as two words in that era) and Toronto Maple Leafs
Starting goaltender Mike Karakas was unable to play Game 1 of the series
and backup Paul Goodman was not with the team
the Black Hawks hastily recruited Toronto native Moore (whose minor league season with the Pittsburgh Hornets was finished) to start the opening game of the best-of-five series
Moore backstopped the Black Hawks to 3-1 win
Chicago went on to win the series and capture the Cup
the team has dressed a wide array of backup goaltenders who did not appear in any games for the team
Most were minor league farmhands (Rejean Lemelin
Scott Munroe or Kirill Ustimenko) or former NHLers (such as Jamie Storr
who served as the backup goalie for several portions of December 2005 or Jason Bacashihua in February and March of 2012) who backed up in a pinch
some of these goalies later appeared in NHL games with other organizations
who most went on to spend several NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins and later became the Flyers' longtime goaltending coach
there has been a smattering of "true" EBUGs --- backups who never otherwise played professional hockey or were active or former minor league netminders who were not under NHL contract to the Flyers -- who have dressed in one more games as the Flyers backup without getting into a game
after the tragic passing of Pelle Lindbergh in Nov
Darrren Jensen temporarily became the Flyers starter after being recalled from the AHL's Hershey Bears
Kalamazoo Wings (IHL) goaltender Mike Bloski backed up Jensen until Froese was able to return
trainer Dave "Sudsy" Settlemyre dressed as a backup for the NHL club and actually appeared in a combined five games for the Philadelphia Firebirds (NAHL) and Maine Mariners (AHL) when they were Flyers farm teams
Temple University alum Eric Semborski dressed as Chicago's backup for their Dec
game against the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center
Semborski became an in-game EBUG for the Flyers
Steve Mason had the flu and Michal Neuvirth had health scare during the first period and was briefly hospitalized for observation
Anthony Stolarz entered the game to replace Neuvirth
with emergency backup Semborski waiting in the wings in uniform
Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol attempted to insert Semborski to finish the game
because Stolarz was neither injured nor ill
Semborski was not permitted to enter the game
in a combined shutout between Neuvirth and Stolarz
EBUGs have been at the ready when there was an injury or illness but the original starter's situation was not so severe that the NHLer was unable to at least remain on the bench if he had to re-enter for an incapacitated relief goalie
once hastily suited up for EBUG duty for Philly but his emergency services did not prove necessary
the following is a non-exhaustive list of Flyers backups and EBUGs who never played in a game for Philly but were available for duty in at least one match: Russ Gillow

TAMPA -- Kyle Konin served as an emergency backup goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings at Amalie Arena on Monday
"[Every emergency goalie is] happy just to show up to games and see NHL hockey every night," Konin said Monday after the morning skate. "Practices are an added bonus when you get to see the best shooters in the world and try to keep up with them."
Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Johansson's injury isn't thought to be serious and he is expected to start Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens for the second of a back-to-back.
“It’s probably the coolest position in sports,” Konin said. “ … There’s a lot of alumni that are pretty plugged into the area, but not a ton of goalies that are in the area that my age and love getting on the ice every day. So, just right place, right time. I couldn’t be happier.”
Tampa Bay (41-26-7) holds the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference and trails the Toronto Maple Leafs by six points for third place in the Atlantic Division.

“I was like, ‘Oh, boy, I either did something really bad or something really good,’ " said Konin, a St. Petersburg resident and former college goaltender who paints goalie masks for a living.
About seven hours later, Konin, 23, was suited up for the Blues as their backup goalie for their game against the Lightning at Amalie Arena. Though he didn’t play, Konin led the team onto the ice for warmups and sat on the bench.
“I didn’t expect any of that,” Konin said. “I’d say everything just surpassed my expectations. I guess my expectation was that I was going to get a jersey and get to sit on the bench.”
Konin is the emergency backup goaltender for Lightning home games. Each NHL team has to have an emergency backup available at home games who can dress should either team need a goaltender in the 11th hour.
It might be the rarest, and most interesting, opportunity in professional sports, when a normal person can go from spectator to participant, if only for a day.
Most times, emergency goalies are never called upon for duty.
St. Louis Blues emergency goaltender Kyle Konin warms up before Thursday's game against the Lightning at Amalie Arena [ CHRIS O'MEARA | AP ]But when Blues starter Jordan Binnington went into the league’s COVID-19 protocol Thursday morning and the team was unable to call up a backup from the AHL due to salary-cap issues, Konin was called into duty to back up Ville Husso.
He spent most of his childhood in Clearwater, and his first time on skates was at a Lightning youth camp in Brandon. He once skated as the Thunder Kid before a Lightning game.
His parents, Jeff and Gina, are Clearwater residents and Lightning season-ticket holders, but Thursday’s game wasn’t on their plan. So Jeff jumped online to buy seats behind the visitor’s bench, close enough to have a good view of the stool on which the backup goaltender sits and far enough away so the family wouldn’t be a distraction. Kyle’s wife, Hannah, and her family also were there.

Hours earlier, Konin had walked into a dressing room full of strangers who became his teammates for the night. The Blues outfitted him with a jersey, but the rest of his gear was from the equipment bag he lugs to each home game, including the pants he wore with lightning bolts on the side.
For warmups, Konin was prompted to the front of the visiting-team tunnel by captain Ryan O’Reilly to take his rookie lap, a tradition before a player’s first NHL game. Forward Vladimir Tarasenko tapped Konin with his stick, sending him out. Forward Brayden Schenn shouted, “Let’s lead the boys, ‘Konzy.’ No bucket (helmet).”
“I was kind of against it for a while,” Konin said. “I was just like, I don’t know if it’s more of, like, a thing you have to earn or whatever. I just was kind of like, I don’t know if I should. But all the boys were like, ‘Oh, no, you’re going, you’re going.’ So at that point it was kind of like they decided that for me.
“It was a good time, and it’s pretty cool to kind of get the full NHL experience.”
A few rows above the bench, Konin’s parents watched with pride. Jeff told himself not to take video with his phone because he wanted to completely take in the moment.
As the local emergency backup goaltender, Kyle attends every home game. He sits behind the home bench in Section 130 ready to grab his equipment bag and help immediately if either team loses a goaltender due to injury.
But the timing of this opportunity — the Blues knew early in the day they’d need his help — allowed him the rare chance to be an NHL player for an entire day.

[ Courtesy of Kyle Konin ]“I got the full experience for that,” Konin said. “Normally, you’re going to the game and just trying to stay mentally ready, but you can’t really do anything physically until something happens.”
Konin’s path to hockey was as winding as the one that took him from Tampa Bay and back. His hockey ambitions, and those of younger brother Chris, took him north to a prep school in New Hampshire. After a stint in juniors, he played college hockey at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.

“It happens all the time,” Konin said Monday morning, sitting in a stall inside the main Lightning dressing room. “Probably 20 times a year, where someone pulls (a muscle), does something weird, tweaks something and they’re always ready to go for the game, but you’re always ready.”
Over the weekend, things seemed a little different. Konin was called in to skate on Sunday’s off day, and he knew heading into Monday that he would take the ice before morning skate to be in net for injured defenseman Mikhail Sergachev’s on-ice rehab session. That wasn’t unusual, as Konin often helps out when the Lightning need a spare goaltender during skates, practices and scrimmages.
“I texted my dad in my family group chat,” Konin said. “And they’re like, ‘They’re pranking you. It’s April Fool’s.’”
It’s turned out to be no joke. He did indeed dress for Monday’s game.
“I kind of wish they told me after practice because your head is just going a million miles an hour and not even thinking about anything specific,” Konin said after morning skate. “Just crazy. ... I’m sure it’ll hit me later. I’m gong to try to go home and take a nap, but no chance I’m falling asleep.”
Konin has been the Lightning’s EBUG for the past four seasons. He grew up a Lightning fan, spending most of his childhood in Clearwater. He went to youth camps in Brandon and skated on the ice as a Thunder Kid before a game at Amalie Arena.
He was playing college hockey in Michigan in 2020 when the pandemic hit and he moved back to Florida to be with his parents, Jeff and Gina. He quickly immersed himself in the local hockey scene, making connections with Lightning alumni like John Tucker, Mathieu Garon, Dwayne Roloson and Filip Kuba. And soon enough, Konin found himself invited to a lot of gatherings and shootarounds because there was a need for goaltenders.

This one commemorated the Jewish community of Konin

Theo’s parents had lived there before emigrating to Britain just before the first world war
and Theo and his father had subscribed to a donation for the book’s publication
looked at its closing list of the 2,000 Konin Jews murdered in the Holocaust
and found he could decipher the names of at least seven of his relatives
As he later wrote: “I turned over the pages and knew that the decision had been made for me: I must write a book of my own about the Jewish men and women of Konin

The industry’s legacy lives on in the culture
the economy and the European Union’s climate policies

the miners in the Polish coal city of Konin have gathered to celebrate St
and the black mineral rock that has held their community together
the miners of Konin marched for what will likely be the last time
The mine around which their community was built is shutting down
the sump pumps have already been turned off
Soon there will be no more mining over which Barbara’s grace can shine.
a question hung over the city: Was this a funeral or a celebration of reincarnation
The end of mining in Konin coincides with a shift in Polish politics
as a centrist government led by former European Council President Donald Tusk takes over from former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s nationalist Law and Justice party
The political transition is likely to accelerate the decline of the country’s mining sector. Where the last government agreed with unions to keep the mines open until 2049, the incoming administration wants the share of renewable energy to increase to 68 percent by 2030
a percentage of the country’s power generation roughly equivalent to that provided by coal today
It’s an end that’s been coming for years — despite earnest attempts to resist by unions and successive governments
and Europe’s carbon pricing system have halved the number of collieries between 1990 and 2014
Its workforce has since been slashed by more than two-thirds
in the culture and in the European Union’s climate policies
Poland has been one of the most vocal opponents of the EU’s green agenda
Even as other countries in the EU pushed for tougher targets
Warsaw used every opportunity to advocate a slower pace.
The legacy of that effort lives on not only in EU targets that are less ambitious than they might otherwise have been
but also in an emphasis on what advocates call a “just transition.” This is one that attempts to cushion the blows on those who stand to lose out as countries wean themselves from fossil fuels
When Poland was given the opportunity to host the COP24 climate conference in 2018
it chose to hold the gathering in Katowice
in the heart of its coal country — shining a spotlight on the impact the fight against climate change would have on tens of thousands of jobs
Warsaw’s push has meant more money for historically polluting economies like Poland’s
it won’t save the identity they’ve celebrated for decades
But the hope is that it will mean enough assistance from Brussels and Warsaw to help the elderly end their careers with dignity
and the youngest among them to build lives that aren’t dependent on a resource fueling the warming of the world

An undisclosed injury to Jonas Johansson leads to the Lightning dipping into the eBUG pool
there probably weren’t too many folks in the area that knew who Kyle Konin was despite the fact that he was often on the ice with many of the Tampa Bay Lightning superstars
Petersburg resident is the Lightning’s emergency back-up goalie
A lower-body injury to back-up goaltender Jonas Johansson has moved Konin to the active roster as Andrei Vasilevskiy’s back-up
Could he be the next Scott Foster or David Ayers
The 26-year-old from Rhode Island has been the Lightning’s eBUG since the 2020 season
but hasn’t been called on by the team until tonight
he has been on the ice when the Lightning needed an extra netminder for practice or helping players who are rehabbing like Mikhail Sergachev
Konin’s last competitive action came with Grand Valley State University in 2019-20
During the COVID Pause he moved back to Florida to live with his parents and ended up playing with Lightning alumni like John Tucker
While it’s the first time he’s suiting up for the Lightning
it’s not the first time he’s been a back-up
Louis Blues netminder Jordan Binnington entered COVID protocols and Konin got the call to be the back-up
The Blues had him take a rookie lap before the game
He didn’t get into the game, and chances are he won’t tonight, but he’s soaking it all in and, in his words
enjoying a nice lunch before going back to his day job of painting hockey masks
Konin does usually attend most of the Lightning’s home games and is always prepared to be called into action
but ends up watching most of the action like we do
If he does somehow end up in the game tonight, it will bring his story full circle. Konin grew up in Clearwater and attended the Lightning’s youth hockey camps as a child
Coach Cooper isn’t too concerned that what is keeping him out of back-up duties is going to be a long-term problem
With the Lightning playing back-to-back games later this week
they’re likely to wait another day or so to see how JJ is feeling before they call up either Matt Tomkins or Hugo Alnefelt from the Syracuse Crunch

Ayres saved eight of 10 shots in a 6-3 win
becoming the first emergency backup goalie to be credited an NHL win."You look at when Scott played
but he made some great saves and gave the team confidence," Beaupre said."I remember when it was happening in Toronto
[the Maple Leafs] scored on Ayres and I thought
'That is the worst-case scenario.' You're not working out every day
it wouldn't be out of the question if they go in there and get lit up
Even NHL goalies let in six or seven goals a night sometimes
But he ended up getting a win and what a crazy story."Whether or not they get in
just knowing the opportunity could be there is enough for most EBUGs."It's a dream come true," Goldman said
"I grew up in Texas in the middle of nowhere and didn't know hockey existed until the Stars came from Minnesota
Growing up in Texas and having dream of playing in NHL was futile
I recognized pretty quickly that was more of a pipe dream than anything
but I've been so committed to the position my whole life
It's such a surreal experience because you know on any given day
there's a 99.99 percent chance nothing's happening
But there's always that .001 percent chance that it could happen."
Manaus – Greenpeace Brazil captured images of illegal fires causing widespread destruction in the Amazon during a flyover carried out between 29 to 31 July
The images come as the Brazilian Space Research Institute (INPE) registered 8.712 km² of deforestation over the period of August 2020 to July 2021
the second largest year-round deforestation rate recorded by the DETER-B alert system
Photos and videos available on Greenpeace’s Media Library
“Having dismantled environmental enforcement
Bolsonaro and the Brazilian congress are now proactively trying to reward illegal deforestation and land theft
Using emergency legislative rules inappropriately
they are sneaking through new radical bills that will bring more destruction and worsen the climate emergency,” says Cristiane Mazzetti
Despite recent promises by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to address illegal deforestation
he and his allies are advancing a suite of radical bills that would allow for more deforestation and undermine Indigenous Peoples’ land rights
the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies passed a radical law
PL2633 that would legitimize land grabbing within public lands
Land grabbing on public lands is linked to one-third of all Amazon deforestation in Brazil. Experts predict that these proposals could ‘break’ the Amazon because the rainforest can only sustain so much forest loss before it fails as an ecosystem.
“Few expected this government to fulfill its disingenuous promise to reduce deforestation by 10%
Officials continue to weaken environmental agencies and
are using the military to investigate environmental crimes
a strategy proven to be ineffective,” continued Mazzetti
“If the Brazilian Senate approves the land-grabbing bill
they will accelerate the collapse of the Amazon and destroy parts of the rainforest that are key to preventing the worst scenarios of the climate and biodiversity emergencies.”

Konin figured it would save him money in the long run
He told ABC Action News it gave him peace of mind
Konin paid Mirabella Motors in Tampa an additional $2,585 for an extended warranty on the 2017 convertible
Konin’s peace of mind over the extended coverage plan lasted a year
“I brought it into the Mercedes dealer to have them look at it,” Konin said
The Mercedes dealer said they could not find any record of the third-party warranty
Konin said he then called the warranty company
“They said no such warranty exists," he recalled
no such warranty has ever been applied for in your name or through this dealership."
the warranty company confirmed there was no extended coverage plan for his vehicle
But he said the owner didn’t provide proof that the dealership applied for and paid for the plan
Konin filed a complaint with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles
replied by emailing a copy of what appeared to be a payment ledger
He said it proved he purchased multiple warranties for his customers through a third party
The document listed debits for $4,910,00 and $3,855.00 to a warranty company but contained no VIN or stock number to specify a vehicle
The DMV stated in its letter to Konin that its investigation determined Mirabella Motors never applied for his warranty and that he was owed a $2,585 refund
Konin filed a claim with the company that handles the dealer’s $25,000 bond with the state
The bondholder has since issued Konin a full refund
ABC Action News found Mirabella Motors did not renew their dealer's license back in April
The DMV said Tony Mirabella would have to apply for a new license if he intends to get back into the auto sales business

It was the second time that Konin has suited up for an NHL team
who has a .902 save percentage in 27 games of his own
Tomkins returned to North America ahead of this season
after spending the last two seasons in Sweden’s SHL
He played with both Frölunda HC and Färjestad BK
managing an impressive 39 wins and .910 save percentage in a combined 65 games
The Swedish performance was a strong show of strength for Tomkins
who had previously spent four seasons bouncing between the minor leagues in the Chicago Blackhawks organization
Tampa has Tomkins under contract through the end of next season
And while call-ups like this one certainly present opportunity
it’s likely that the 29-year-old netminder continues to serve as Tampa’s de facto injury fill-in

and said that he had thought the gun was a replica and that it had gone off unintended
He claimed to have been given it by a drug dealer and was carrying it around for his protection
He pleaded not guilty to murder but admitted affray

2021TAMPA — The Blues turned to a Tampa Bay area beer-league goaltender to be their emergency backup for Thursday’s game against the Lightning
The Blues were scrambling when starter Jordan Binnington tested positive for the coronavirus
and Charlie Lindgren could not be called up from the AHL until today
For situations when teams do not have two available goaltenders
each home team is responsible for providing an emergency backup goaltender for the home or road team
Louis Blues backup goalie Kyle Konin (31) stretch during pregame warmups
[ DIRK SHADD | Times ]Tampa Bay’s emergency backup is 23-year-old Kyle Konin
a former goaltender at Grand Valley State in Allendale
who does custom paint jobs on goalie masks at his business in St
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said the team recalled Lindgren from AHL Springfield but he wasn’t available Thursday because injuries and players unavailable due to COVID-19 protocols used up the team’s salary-cap space
Louis instead turned to Konin to back up Ville Husso at Amalie Arena
Armstrong said Thursday morning that he and coach Craig Berube spoke with Konin and welcomed him to the team
Louis Blues backup goalie Kyle Konin (31) warms up in net before Thursday's game against the Lightning
[ DIRK SHADD | Times ]“(We) had a good conversation,” Armstrong said
“He had a morning skate with his beer-league guys
and he said he was on fire and ready to go
and it’s just one of those things you have to roll with.”
He also was the Lightning’s goaltender in the offseason when players showed up early to start training and skating at TBH Ice Plex in Brandon before the start of camp
Emergency backups gained mainstream notoriety in 2020 when injuries forced one-time Zamboni driver David Ayres into duty for the Hurricanes in a win over the Maple Leafs at Toronto
Ayres made seven saves in 28-plus minutes of play to earn the win
Eight journalists were taken on a tour from 4 to 6 June of EU-funded projects in Katowice
a city in the Śląskie (Silesian) region and Konin
The visit informed journalists about the EU’s cohesion policy and how the Just Transition Fund is supporting coal regions in Poland to make the transition to green energy sources
journalists received a technical briefing on EU support for a just climate transition by DG Regio experts Marta Wnuk and Joanna Rylko
This was followed by a visit to the Silesian Museum
journalists were treated to a concert at the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra
Both venues are in the Katowice cultural zone
journalists met the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship
Afterwards they were taken to see the renovated Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów
The European Regional Development Fund co-funded both museums and the concert hall
journalists were given a tour of Konin’s power plant and its open-pit coal mine
Mr Chełstowski told journalists that the region had received about EUR 10 billion in EU funding in recent years
as part of efforts to prevent job losses that will result from the move away from coal
“Our goal was and is to be an example to Europe in the correct use of this money,” Greek newspaper Xronos-kozanis reported him saying
The Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów was developed as part of an EU-funded project to revitalise and protect the post-industrial cultural heritage of Upper Silesia and create a unique cultural and educational offer for residents and visitors
The project “Revitalisation and access to the post-industrial heritage of Upper Silesia” was co-financed under the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment for 2014-2020
of which the European Regional Development Fund contributed EUR 77.6 million (85%)
The museum is part of the European Cultural Route of Industrial Heritage
It is located in the former Huta Królewska power plant and recalls 200 years of the city’s industrial history
The Katowice cultural zone was developed on the site of a coal mine that had been in operation since 1823
The Silesian Museum is located partly underground
Both it and the concert hall were opened in 2015
The cultural zone includes an international conference centre with a grass-covered roof
It is an example of how a mining area has been successfully turned into a hub for business
Local residents and tourists attend annual events held there
including the Tauron New Music Festival in summer
A visit to the Konin coal-fired power plant
In Konin, journalists were given a tour of the Pątnów power station, a lignite-fired power plant and coal mine both owned by Ze Pak SA, the largest private energy group in Poland. The company is constructing a green electrolyser producing hydrogen on the site, a project supported by an Innovation Fund grant of EUR 4.5 million
The 5 MW electrolyser will produce green hydrogen for public buses
The project started in October 2021 and the electrolyser is scheduled to come into operation in January 2024
Annual hydrogen production capacity is expected to be 710 tonnes per annum
which would provide fuel for about 84 buses
The project will contribute to the development of a low-emission transport market in Poland and has the potential to be scaled from 5 MW to 50 MW in 2024-2030
if demand for hydrogen-powered buses increases
The journalists were also shown the open-pit coal mine which will be closed and turned into an artificial lake in 2024
The power plant is already producing 55 MW of electricity from biomass
some of which is supplied by local farmers
Xronos-kozanis reported that the plant provides loans to farmers
to enable them to build small wind turbines on their land
The electricity they generate is used to produce green hydrogen at the Ze Pak electrolyser
Konin is well on its way to providing heating and transport for the city’s residents from renewable energy
The power plant also has a training facility where technical education students specialising in renewable energy
are learning to install photovoltaic panels
To ensure that workers are not negatively affected by the closure of the mine and the coal burning units of the power station
an agreement was reached with unions to provide voluntary pensions or retraining in renewable energy technologies
The participating journalists were from Bulgaria
a voluntary association of 150 journalists from across Europe
Two of the journalists had not previously participated in a DG Regio media programme
Another three journalists are part of the EUinMyRegion Train Trip project and only visited Katowice
The trip generated media coverage about the topic and increased the media network of the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG Regio)
Poland was responsible for 19 % of the EU’s total lignite (brown coal) consumption
EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans visited Konin in May this year to discuss how the European Commission could expedite state aid for coal workers
He said the region could serve as a blueprint for other coal regions in Poland
Ze Pak president Piotr Woźny said during the visit that the company is already implementing plans for the site and its workers in preparation for the post-coal era
The Eastern Wielkopolskie Voivodeship could become the first coal region in Poland to phase out coal by 2024
and achieve climate neutrality by 2040 – a decade earlier than the EU's target
