even down to coming up with naming conventions that help consumers of our data logically deduce what the data represents,” said Krasnik
As an undergrad at Johns Hopkins University
Krasnik majored in math and computational linguistics
Krasnik believes the work she does as Perpay’s sole (for now) data engineer engages the right side of her brain more than one might think
“Building a data architecture — that’s my creative side,” said Krasnik
I get the opportunity to figure out which direction to take
how to mold all of the layers of data together into a nice little box from which we make informed decisions.”
The mission to help people build healthier financial habits is what initially drew Krasnik to work at Perpay
The opportunity to build a data analytics infrastructure from scratch was a close second
“We’re building a data engineering infrastructure that can scale with us,” said Krasnik
“I want to lay groundwork that can be built upon
Krasnik might be a pioneer on her team, but she’s among a growing group of data engineers building the systems that companies use to access and gain insights from their ever-more-bountiful volumes of data
The company boasts 3.5 million customer accounts and plans to increase that number as it continues to grow
Krasnik is working to identify and pull in as many data points from the Perpay platform as possible
from how its customers are using and growing with its products to which features and products it will make next
“It’s always better to have too much data than not enough,” she said
One of the current challenges data engineers face across the industry is the fragmentation of data analytics tools
but nothing that covers multiple use cases
Krasnik is constantly evaluating which tools to leverage as she designs an analytics space with the capacity and versatility to grow with Perpay
design is the most interesting part,” she said

A Polish town has voted to keep its declaration of being “free from LGBT ideology”
despite the risk that it could result in millions of euros of lost European grants
the town council also voted in favour of a proposed ban on 5G technology and Wi-Fi internet in schools
has moved to the centre of an increasingly international dispute over the large number of Polish local authorities that have adopted anti-LGBT resolutions
Some have been denied funds from the EU’s town-twinning programme
and have also seen partner communities in western countries break off relations
Kraśnik’s French twin town of Nogent-sur-Oise declared that it was suspending cooperation
In response, Poland’s justice minister last month stepped in to provide one district that had lost EU funding with a cheque for three times more than the amount it had been denied
Polish justice ministry compensates “LGBT ideology free” district for lost EU funds
announced that local authorities in Poland that have passed anti-LGBT resolutions will not receive money from the grants that her country provides to support civil society
Poland is the largest recipient of the so-called Norway Grants
and is budgeted to receive €411.5 million during the current 2014-2021 funding period (plus a further €397.8 million from the related EEA Grants
Eriksen specifically mentioned Kraśnik as a community that could see its funding suspended
some in Kraśnik’s municipal authorities were already considering withdrawing their anti-LGBT resolution
it declared the town “free from LGBT ideology” and promised to combat “homopropaganda” and the “sexualisation of children”
“If it were to have an impact on the funds we were hoping to invest in developing the town, it would make our functioning very difficult,” said the head of the town council
Polish courts annul “LGBT ideology-free zones”, finding they violate constitution
the council held a vote on a proposal to overturn the resolution
by an 11-to-9 majority the members chose to stick with it
Among those who voted to keep the resolution were representatives of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, which has led a vocal anti-LGBT campaign since early last year
One PiS councillor, Jerzy Misiak, warned that “we cannot allow Kraśnik to become a Catholic wilderness with rampant LGBT ideology”, echoing recent words by party leader Jarosław Kaczyński in reference to what he claims Ireland has become
Ireland is a “Catholic wilderness with rampant LGBT ideology” and Poland could follow, warns Kaczyński
the council also voted in favour of accepting a petition from the Poland Free From 5G Coalition
an association that campaigns to “protect Poland from the implementation of untested next-generation 5G” technology
which is one of many the association has proposed to local authorities
warns that the “exposure to artificial electromagnetic fields” caused by 5G is a “threat to life and health”
It calls on communities to stop the implementation of 5G networks until the effects are fully investigated
The document also proposes the “dismantling of existing Wi-Fi networks in schools” and for pupils to be required to put their mobile phones in airplane mode during lessons
Local authorities should also “conduct information campaigns for residents on the health risks associated with electromagnetic fields”
the petitioners’ position was presented by a representative of the “Right to Life National Association for the Prevention of Electro-threats”
Nine council members voted in favour of the petition
the councilman who last year submitted the anti-LGBT resolution
was one of those who voted for the petition
“This is something absolutely new and we do not know how it will affect our bodies and our children,” he said
Phone mast set on fire in Poland following rollout of first 5G network
Poland has seen the development of a movement opposed to the introduction of 5G mobile technology
despite experts making clear it is perfectly safe and debunking the claims and conspiracy theories surrounding it
Such voices have become particularly prominent during the coronavirus pandemic
with anti-5G groups a visible presence at protests against lockdown measures
In May, shortly after the rollout of Poland’s first commercial 5G network, a tellecommunications mast in the city of Łódź was set on fire
The mobile operator that owns it warned that cases of vandalism are rising
and are encouraged by misinformation about 5G online

A 41.93 km dual carriageway section of Poland’s Lublin – Rzeszów S19 express road between the Lublin Węglin and Kraśnik South junctions is under construction
Part of the core trans-European transport (TEN-T) network
it will help achieve national territorial cohesion with a European dimension
in line with Poland’s National Road Construction Programme
the road will have two 3.5 m-wide lanes and one 2.5 m-wide emergency lane
the central reservation will be 5 m wide and the soft shoulders at least 1.25 m wide
To allow for adaptation to forecast traffic levels
space will be set aside for an additional lane on each carriageway
The design speed and maximum axle load for the road will be 100 km/h and 115 kilonewtons/axle respectively
The project entails construction of five road junctions: Strzeszkowice
these junctions will ensure safe links with the existing road network and adjacent areas
The project also encompasses two connecting roads of 1.3 km
linking the newly constructed road with the existing road network
district and local roads crossing the S19 will be modified to adapt the network to the planned route
Further construction work covers civil engineering structures such as bridges
All accompanying infrastructure like pavements
lighting and other safety elements will be set up
and a traffic management system will be implemented
Wildlife passages and other environmental protection measures will be put in place and roadside greenery will be planted
Objectives of the project include eliminating bottlenecks and improving conditions for transit traffic in existing corridors by adding a safe section of express road with high levels of comfort for long-distance
the project should relieve adjacent areas of congestion
Adhering to legal provisions for express roads will ensure interoperability with the rest of the road network
improving accessibility to and connections within the TEN-T network and strengthening Poland’s internal transport links
This will support free movement of people and goods
thus contributing to the EU’s external competitiveness and internal cohesion
Total investment for the project “Construction of the S19 express road Lublin-Rzeszów
section junction Lublin Węglin – junction Kraśnik Południe” is EUR 346 057 443
with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 171 235 510 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Development of the TEN-T road network and multimodal transport”

A Polish town has gone back on a controversial move to declare itself "LGBT-free"
Councillors in the eastern municipality of Kraśnik voted to repeal the 2019 decision on Thursday
Kraśnik was one of dozens of towns and regions since May 2019 to say they are free of "LGBT ideology"
which the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) say undermines Poland's religious family values
Kraśnik's centre-right mayor Wojciech Wilk had supported the withdrawal
stating the declaration had "a negative impact" elsewhere in the region
Nine city councillors supported his proposal
It was the fourth occasion that Kraśnik had attempted to rescind its "LGBT-free" status after three unsuccessful attempts
The resolution was originally declared by Kraśnik and around 100 other municipalities in May 2019 after support from the conservative PiS
But the decision soon led to the withdrawal of international funding and a wave of negative attention online
suspended funding to six Polish cities that adopted the resolution
Norway's foreign minister Ine Eriksen Soreide also indicated that "municipalities which have adopted anti-LGBT resolutions will not receive financial support from Norwegian funds as long as these resolutions are valid"
the French town of Nogent-sur-Oise suspended twinning ties with Kraśnik in February 2020 over the gesture
Writing on Facebook
Wilk said the resolution had "financial consequences" on Kraśnik
we prepared a project that would enable us to obtain 39 million zloty (€8.5 million) for the social and economic development of the city."
"The grant would come from the Norwegian Mechanism
[But] the Norwegian government's anti-discrimination policy made it difficult to secure the grant."
Kraśnik also gained widespread attention when France's Minister for Europe said he was prevented from visiting the city's 'LGBT-free' zones during a recent visit
Clément Beaune told French media in March that he was dissuaded by "political pressure" from Polish officials
Poland's Foreign Ministry denied the allegations
Kraśnik's mayor said the withdrawal of the city's "LGBT-free" status brought an end to "a period of serious crisis"
"A negative image has been perpetuated in numerous Polish and foreign media reports," Wilk said
"The rights of minorities are guaranteed by the Polish Constitution and there should be no doubt that the Kraśnik local government respects the law in Poland."
"I am glad that the councillors have decided to repeal the resolution," he added
"it was a difficult time for our local government and our city."
have suggested that the vote to repeal could cause "a secondary worldview conflict"
shows that some councillors on the right have no moral backbone," said the vice-chairman of the council
"What triumphs is not common sense but the political result," he wrote on Facebook
the European Parliament passed a resolution declaring all 27 member states an LGBT "freedom zone" although
like the Polish resolutions declaring the opposite
The mayor of Krasnik declared the town as an ‘LGBT Free’ zone in May 2019
but has since admitted the town has become a “laughingstock”
Krasnik is a Polish town located in southeastern Poland close to the Ukraine border
The town joined a handful of Polish towns which implemented the anti-LGBTQ+ measures to support Poland’s right-wing conservatives and the Roman Catholic Church
which is heavily ingrained into Poland’s religious society
“We have become Europe’s laughingstock, and it’s the citizens not the local politicians who’ve suffered most,” Wojciech Wilk told The New York Times
The Polish politician now believes the pledge is a “symbolic and legally pointless gesture” which has caused economic hardship to the town
Wilk denies the town’s growing reputation as an anti-LGBTQ+ location and has appealed for support for the town of Krasnik
“My position is clear: I want this resolution repealed because it’s harmful for the town and its inhabitants,” Gscene magazine reports
the European Parliament has passed a motion condemning Poland after local authorities in the country started declaring themselves as “free from LGBT ideology.”
Most of the 80 ‘LGBT-free’ zones in the country are in the southeast
local authorities pledge to refrain from actions that could be seen as tolerant of the LGBTQ community
and prevent financial aid to NGOs helping to promote equal rights
While the LGBTQ+ community are not strictly banned from these towns
the labelling as ‘LGBT-free zones’ promotes an intolerance to their identities and an active agenda to work against LGBTQ+ education and acceptance in Polish communities
In the two years following Krasnik’s declaration as an ‘LGBT-free’ zone
the town has faced a loss of million in federal funding
including a $10 million funding grant from Norway
and jeopardised the economic future of the town
Wilks is actively petitioning to have the pledge overturned and is urging councillors to reverse the anti-LGBTQ+ declaration
Krasnik will not be the first Polish town to rescinded its declaration against “LGBT ideology.”
In January this year, the Polish town of Nowa Dęba removed a resolution that set it up as an ‘LGBT-free zone’ after claiming the resolution had been “misunderstood” and “exploited” to harm the town’s image
Local authorities are refraining from actions that could be seen as tolerant of the LGBTQ+ community
and are working to prevent financial aid for non-governmental organisations helping to promote equal rights
A conservative newspaper also printed “LGBT-free zone” stickers for readers to publicly display in their homes
and as such it lost access to certain EU funding when they adopted resolutions against these “LGBT-free zones.”
The ‘LGBT-free’ zones came to fruition after the country’s ruling Law and Justice Party inspired several towns in Poland to be free from “LGBT ideology” – putting vulnerable LGBTQ+ citizens at risk of discrimination
Fifty countries from around the world recently signed an open letter calling for Poland to “protect all citizens from violence and discrimination and to ensure they enjoy equal opportunities.”
Our weekly email is chockful of interesting and relevant insights into Jewish history
The only antidote to anti-Semitism is pro-Semitism
has anti-Semitism returned once again as a powerful evil force threatening contemporary world Jewry
Hats not as a statement of fashion but as a statement of faith
Hats worn by observant Jews to publicly identify themselves by way of a tradition going back thousands of years
Hats symbolize our belief in a Supreme Being Who is above us – the Almighty who transcends our heads
Hats played a central in what happened last week in Berlin
An apparently Jewish man wearing said skullcap was viciously attacked and beaten
that his only crime was the fact that he was a Jew
It was a racist attack fueled by the ancient venom of anti-Semitism
He had made a bet that anti-Semitism is no longer a problem in Germany today and to prove it he decided to walk the streets self-identified as a Jew
The Arab paid a heavy price for his mistaken assumption
And it seems he is not alone in his misreading of the current mood of anti-Semitism
Copenhagen is a city renowned for Denmark’s historic generosity to non-Danes
a neighborhood of immigrants who left their home countries for the stability of a welfare state
were advised to heed the advice of Israel’s ambassador to Denmark
who strongly suggested that Jews traveling in Copenhagen exercise extreme subtlety: “Don’t speak Hebrew too loudly
cover up any visible Star of David jewelry
fold your kippot and slip them into your pockets.”
in the very place which served as an illustration of the goodness of people to triumph and for anti-Semitism to be abolished
it is now the official advice to keep your Judaism to yourself – and to get rid of that piece of clothing on your head which lets everyone know that you’re Jewish
The famous Danish journalist Martin Krasnik went to great pains to inform readers that the Israeli ambassador “was misunderstood or mistaken.” Clearly
the ambassador was only offering advice to Israelis visiting the rest of Europe
He couldn’t possibly be speaking about Copenhagen which has a long history of hospitality to Jews
“Anti-Semitism is endemic in immigrant neighborhoods
He put on a yarmulke and walked the streets of Nørrebrogade
Krasnik describes numerous encounters in which he just barely missed being severely abused
One of the anti-Semitic interlocutors explained that while ‘perhaps your religion tells you to wear this
it doesn’t tell you to get killed.’ Another explained that the kippah was ‘not a problem for us
but my cousin killed a guy for wearing a ‘Jewish hat.’” Finally
after another demand was made for the “hat” to be removed
Denmark – but surely not in the great state of New York with close to 2 million Jews
An organization representing more than 950 US Orthodox rabbis has condemned an “alarming” increase in violent attacks on Jews in New York City
saying it would work with authorities to provide protection to “neighborhoods under siege” after the latest anti-Semitic assaults within a week
an ultra-Orthodox Jew was violently assaulted while walking home from Shabbat services in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn
told him while knocking the hat off his head into a neighboring garden that he hated Jews and was going to kill him
German Jewry has come up with what it believes is “for now
the best solution.” The head of Germany’s Central Council of Jews
warned against wearing religious symbols on city streets for fear of attack
with a stark caution that Jews who wear the kippah or the Star of David could be courting danger on German streets
The head of the European Jewish Association
saying he was “mistaken in the cure for the serious problem
Not wearing a skullcap due to fear of anti-Semitism is in fact the fulfillment of the vision of anti-Semites in Europe.”
It is ironic that hats play such a significant role in these anti-Semitic incidents
emphasized an incident in his life which he considered life changing – he called it “the primal scene in his life” – which helps us shed light on the matter
in his fascinating book “The Ordeal of Civility”
when my father began to take me with him on his walks and to reveal to me in his talk his views upon things in the world we live in
on one such occasion that he told me a story to show me how much better things were now than they had been in his days
“I went for a walk one Saturday in the streets of your birthplace
A Christian came up to me and with a single blow knocked off my cap into the mud and shouted
“I went into the roadway and picked up my cap,” was his quiet reply
This struck me as unheroic conduct on the part of the big strong man who was holding the little boy by the hand
Freud went on to describe his disappointment and shame at his father’s weak response
Cuddihy relates this moment too much of Freud’s work – his ambivalent relationship with Jews and non-Jews
and his strange assertion in Moses and Monotheism that Moses was not a Jew but an Egyptian
became a lifelong reminder of shame – and for Freud had lifelong consequences
a kippah is a way of publicly declaring religious affiliation and identity
The Talmud tells us there were three reasons why the Jews survived in spite of being enslaved in the land of Egypt
Their merit was threefold: they did not change their names
Those are the three reasons which kept us from assimilation at the very beginning of our history; they remain the keys to our unique survival from amongst all of the nations in the world to this day
The Jew maintains at least one special garment which declares his faith – and his unwillingness to hide his great pride in being a descendent of Abraham
Jews need to have the fierce determination to be guided by self-identification as a Jew rather than self-negation
even by as minor a gesture as removing our yarmulke in order “to avoid conflict” is not just to lose our hat – but to lose our heads
Anti-Semitism must be fought with full force and energy
with all of our efforts on the college campuses
and all the other arenas where it has begun to infuse its deadly poison
The antidote to anti-Semitism – the only antidote which has a chance of succeeding – is pro-Semitism
the fierce determination to be guided by pride rather than fear
by self-identification as a Jew rather than self-negation
If we remove the signs of our Jewishness to appease our enemies
The hat is but a symbol – yet it is a mighty symbol of our firm belief that the Almighty rules the world and
He will bless those who bless us and those who curse us He will curse

France and Other EU States Should Act Decisively to Protect Rights in the EU
“I will go to an ‘LGBT-free zone’ in Poland,’” said Clément Beaune, French Secretary of State for European Affairs, in a December interview in which he also publicly came out as a gay man. But when he asked to visit Kraśnik, authorities denied him access
Kraśnik is one of almost 100 regions and municipalities in Poland that have endorsed discrimination against lesbian
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people by declaring themselves “LGBT-ideology free” or adopting “charters” that promote an exclusively heterosexual model of families
Attacks on women’s and LGBT rights come amidst a broader erosion of judicial independence and pressure on media and civil society critical of PiS
France’s EU presidency should oversee responses to these attacks against rule of law in the EU. This should start with pushing the European Council to revive scrutiny on Poland and Hungary under Article 7 – the mechanism dealing with EU governments that put the Union’s founding values at risk – and pressing the Commission to condition access to EU funds to respect for the rule of law.
France should ensure its leadership centers on serious efforts to defend human rights everywhere in the EU.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a tremendous burden on the healthcare system
Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have to get fast track treatment which is independent of environmental conditions
The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiological and clinical outcomes of early rehabilitation and compare it with the literature data during the non-COVID-19 period
Materials and methods: A retrospective study included 174 patients with TBI
They all underwent treatment in the University Clinical Center
Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period January-December 2021
We have analyzed the epidemiological data and clinical course in 174 patients as well as the outcome of early rehabilitation in 107 patients
In clinical evaluation were used: Glasgow Coma Score (GCS)
Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Barthel Index on admission and at discharge
as well as Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at discharge
Student t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used in statistical analysis
The value (p < 0.05) was used for statistical significance
Results: A total of 174 patients with TBI were included in this study
Most of the patients (n = 94) were older than 60
male (n = 125) and the most frequent cause of TBI was falling over (n = 88)
almost one third of the sample had moderate (n = 52)
Total of 139 (80.3%) patients had the improved outcome
while the fatal outcome was reported with 33 (18.5%) patients
When comparing the scores on admission and at discharge
the improvement of mean parameter values was reported for GCS (9.9 vs
A complete recovery at discharge was found in 63.79%
while serious deficit was found with 6.32%
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant effect on the epidemiological data but not on the clinical outcome of patients with TBI
Early rehabilitation proved to be effective and to contribute to positive treatment outcome
The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiological and clinical outcomes of early rehabilitation and compare it with the literature data during non COVID-19 period
Flow diagram representing study design with inclusion and exclusion criteria
as well as their share in percentages was calculated for all independent research variables: gender
All listed independent variables are categorical: The Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K-S) test was used to test the normality of the distribution of numerical variables
while Skewness and Kurtosis were also used as the measures of distribution asymmetry
for the following variables: Barthel index at admission
The psychometric properties of the tests were examined
whereby Cronbach α was used to examine internal consistency
The value of the test α ≥ 0.7 is considered as the acceptable test reliability
median (Me) with interquartile range (IQR)
arithmetic mean (M) with standard deviation (SD) as well as a range (Minimum - Maximum) were shown
In order to determine whether there were statistically significant differences in the prominence of dependent variables
while taking into account the independent variables (gender
number of hospitalization days and outcome)
Student's t-test and ANOVA were used
Both tests are two-tailed tests for the possibility of an effect in two directions—positive and negative
Split-plot ANOVA (SPANOVA) was used to investigate the effects of independent variables on repeated measures
mechanical ventilation and early rehabilitation on the outcome of treatment was examined
SPANOVA test was also used to test a separate recovery
the difference at the beginning and at the end of measuring of Barthel test
Wilks' λ and its statistical probability (p) were shown for the influence of the interaction of independent and dependent variable (e.g
whether the change of the result on Barthel test is equal for men and women)
Partial η2 was used to measure the size of the effect of independent variables on the change of the results at the beginning and at the end of measurement for the Barthel test
the influence can be small (Partial η 2 = 0.01)
medium (Partial η 2 = 0.06) and large (Partial η 2 = 0.14)
Wilks' λ is also an indicator of a separate influence of time
the difference at the beginning and at the end for the measured parameters
Correlations between numerical variables were tested by the Pearson correlation coefficient and displayed using a Scatter Plot
The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.001
IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 was used for data analysis
General data on patients with traumatic brain injury
Differences among the functional scores in patients with traumatic brain injury regarding the epidemiology

Descriptive statistics of all measured tests and the psychometric characteristics of the questionnaire, as well as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Cronbach's α coefficient are shown in Table 3
We tested the normality of the distribution using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test
since it is recommended to use it for large samples (≥50)
the distribution of all variables deviates significantly from normal
All scales have high or very high reliability (0.718–0.893) Cronbach's α coefficient
Descriptive statistics and psychometric characteristics of the questionnaire
An improvement was found at discharge measured by Barthel's index in patients with TBI [Wilks' λ = 0.438
η2 accounts for 56.2% of the variance which is classified as a large effect
The influence of early rehabilitation on the value of the test was not recorded
The presence of surgery shows a statistically significant influence on the change in the value of Barthel's Index [Wilks' λ = 0.945
as well as mechanical ventilation [Wilks' λ = 0.858
The size of the effect of surgery is medium (5.5% variance)
and of mechanical ventilation high (14.2% variance)
Patients who did not have surgery and who were not on mechanical ventilation had a higher score on the Barthel Index at discharge
The FIM is better at discharge M = 103.25 (22.90) than at admission [M = 63.96 (28.21)
The size of effect of FIM is high (72.0% of variance)
The value of the FIM test is influenced by mechanical ventilation [Wilks' λ = 0.943
Mechanical ventilation has a medium effect size on FIM
it accounted for 5.7% FIM based on mechanical ventilation
Recovery measured by the FIM test is lower in patients who were on mechanical ventilation

The importance of the TBI problem is underestimated due to the lack of research and quality data
We conducted a retrospective study of the patients who sustained TBI and were treated at the Republic of Srpska University Clinical Center
the largest tertiary center in the Republic of Srpska
Possible causes of falls as the leading mechanism of injury in our study included the following: social isolation
Falling over by the elderly people can also be explained by lack of balance and coordination
as well as lower availability of the health system in terms of postponing check-ups in all areas
Changes in the mechanism of TBI during the pandemic differ among countries and are most likely to reflect their socioeconomic status. For example, in Austria during the lockdown there were no TBI reported caused by skiing; at the same time an increased frequency of TBI due to traffic accidents was registered in New York (15, 21). In Italy, no differences in the TBI mechanism were found compared to the period before the pandemic (16)
Despite restrictive measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic
the incidence of TBI remained high during the second wave of the pandemic
we can only partially compare the results of our study with any other research
The incidence of moderate or severe TBI before and during the COVID-19 pandemic varies among studies. A large multi-center study by Grassner et al. concluded that the number of patients requiring neurosurgical intervention was lower during the pandemic compared to previous years (19). A recent meta-analysis found no significant differences in frequency of moderate and severe TBI before and during the pandemic (20)
The main advantage of our study is in the size of the sample
The analyzed data were from the relatively long period of COVID-19
which included lockdown and restrictions imposed on movement and social life
we paid special attention to the impact of COVID-19 on the outcome of TBI treatment
We conducted a retrospective study in one center
Our center covers approximately 30% of the population with mild TBI and about 90% with moderate and severe TBI
we did not fully extend our results to the general population
Most cases of mild TBI were treated in other hospitals
all moderate and severe TBI were referred to our institution
We did not compare the results of early TBI rehabilitation with studies conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina
such studies have not yet been implemented
COVID-19 has imposed many challenges for healthcare professionals in terms of treating TBI patients during the pandemic
the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant effect on the epidemiological data rather than on clinical outcome in patients with TBI
the patients with TBI continued being treated as the highest priority
Early rehabilitation proved to be effective and to contribute to the positive treatment outcome

The Danish equestrian federation has appointed Helle Krasnik Trolle as the new Danish Grand Prix Team Captain for senior and Under 25 riders
Trolle is replacing Kimi Nielsen who resigned on 31 October 2017
For Danish dressage riders Trolle is no unfamiliar face
She has been a judge for 25 years and trains Danish dressage jugdes alongside organizing competitions
"I'm really excited to dedicate myself to this new challenges and I want to make sure that Danish dressage can ride on the wave of success
which has already culminated with excellent results at the European Championships in Gothenburg
My main focus is to support riders and coaches in their planning
development and training so that we can continue to be at the top amongst the world elite," said Helle
Danish team trainer Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein is pleased with the appointment of the 57-year old Helle
"The team leader is an incredibly important player for the national team
we risk that the set-up around competition planning
coordination and much more will be a challenge
It would make it difficult to focus 100% on performance
Kimi fulfilled this role well over the years
and I'm convinced that Helle is the right one for the task ahead

Councillors in the Polish town of Kraśnik have voted to withdraw the resolution declaring opposition to “LGBT ideology” that they introduced two years ago
The mayor had warned that not doing so would put the community at risk of losing millions of euros in grants from Norway
we can take a very big step in overcoming our image crisis,” said Mayor Wojciech Wilk ahead of the vote
we are not presented very sympathetically.”
we have a better chance of obtaining external funds in the future”
who is affiliated to the centrist Civic Platform (PO)
“I mean especially Norwegian funds,” he added
saying that 35 million zloty (€7.7 million) was at stake
Polish town becomes first to withdraw resolution opposing “LGBT ideology”
It could have lost an estimated €3-10 million
Polish town votes to remain “free from LGBT ideology” and to consider 5G ban
Despite that threat, Kraśnik’s council last year voted by a majority of 11 to nine to keep its anti-LGBT resolution
declared the town “free from LGBT ideology” and promised to combat “homopropaganda” and the “sexualisation of children”
nine of 19 councillors present voted in favour of repeal
Six others favoured keeping the resolution
That means the resolution will be withdrawn
Among councillors from Poland’s nationally ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party – which has led a strident anti-LGBT campaign and whose local officials are behind most anti-LGBT resolutions – three voted against repeal
LGBT “ideology weakens the west and terrorises people”, warns Polish leader Kaczyński
“We will face this [LGBT] ideology sooner than you think,” warned one of them
“Will Christ still find faith on Earth when he returns
It might well turn out that we are fighting against the Lord himself.”
four other PiS councillors either abstained or did not vote
That included the head of their delegation on the council
who said that he was abstaining in order to “avoid disqualification” from Norway funds
who had appealed to councillors to withdraw the resolution
said after the vote that he was “very pleased with the decision
He noted that the town had already seen its image severely damaged
Whole EU declared “LGBTIQ Freedom Zone” in response to Polish anti-LGBT resolutions
Kraśnik was one of almost 100 local authorities in Poland that passed anti-LGBT resolutions in 2019
Though such places are often referred to by critics as “LGBT-free zones”
none of the resolutions specifically uses such language
Around half express opposition to “LGBT ideology” – a term used by PiS to refer to what it claims is a dangerous set of ideas being imported into Poland
Others are so-called “Charters of Family Rights” that do not mention LGBT specifically but reject same-sex marriage and call for the “protection of children from moral corruption”
language often used to suggest that the LGBT movement is a danger to Polish youth
Polish village sues activist over “harmful and defamatory” LGBT-free zone signs
Earlier this year, the town of Nowa Dęba became the first place in Poland to withdraw a resolution declaring opposition to “LGBT ideology”
The head of the local council said it has been “exploited” to damage the town’s reputation
despite the fact that it is likely to result in the loss of 7.3 million zloty in Norway Grants that were to be used to build a museum
“I’m devastated,” said the town’s mayor
His proposal for the resolution to be replaced by a similar one expressing support for families but removing references to LGBT was rejected by the council

What initially seemed a cost-free sop to conservatives in the rural and religiously devout Polish borderlands next to Ukraine

The intricate needlework and fabric panels Esther Nisenthal Krinitz created for her two daughters
are the subject of a Memorial Art Gallery exhibit evoking both beauty and tragedy in rich detail
Fabric of Survival: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz
chronicles the artist’s bucolic childhood in Poland and subsequent decision—at 15—to go off on her own
rather than stay with her family and neighbors who were forced on a journey to a death camp during the Holocaust
The 36 panels on exhibit are relevant in today’s world
the museum’s McPherson Director of Academic Programs
“It can be too easy to forget—or never learn—our collective history
and it’s so important for our collective memory to keep it alive,” says Hamann-Whitmore
and sometimes art allows us to have conversations that are difficult otherwise.”
which made textiles a natural conduit for her poignant story
says Krinitz could be labeled an “outsider” or “untutored artist,” but her work “is of an extraordinary quality and deserving of a place in an art museum exhibition program.”
Home to more than 600 textiles in its permanent collection
the museum routinely presents and collects textile works of art
“Some people have something incredible inside them that they are able to convey visually
Krinitz filled notebooks with stories about what had happened to her
but she was 50 before she created her first panel—an image of herself as a girl in the picturesque village of Mniszek
carrying water from the river up a hill toward her house and family
showed her swimming with her older brother in that same river
while three of her sisters tend geese nearby
“I cannot recall a time when I did not know my mother’s stories,” she says
“but during the roughly 10 years she spent creating most of these pictures
she talked about her memories even more than she had before
I think she was trying to keep them from disappearing.”
Each image includes meticulous hand-embroidered captions
The caption for the panel Ordered to Leave Our Homes: “This was my family on the morning of October 15
We were ordered by the Gestapo to leave our homes by 10 a.m
to join all the other Jews on the road to Krasnik railroad station and then to their deaths.”
Recalls Steinhardt: “She always said that was the most difficult picture for her to do—not technically
Krinitz’s story inspired a 30-minute award-winning documentary
The first two panels that Krinitz made, hanging outside the exhibition entrance, are being used to help elicit positive memories for people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia who visit to the museum every week as part of a partnership between the museum and the Rochester chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association
The panels also are helping to spark conversations with younger visitors
and there are plans to bring in refugees as well
“Maybe this will encourage other people to tell their stories,” says Hamann-Whitmore
Fabric of Survival is on view through December 2
Now, Jewish actor Jesse Eisenberg is doing the same
In a recent interview with Polish publication “Głos Wielkopolski,” the “Social Network” actor revealed that he is in the final stages of receiving Polish citizenship
I’ve heard stories of the Polish relationship with my Jewish family and all the stories were great: we were best friends with the Poles
My family lived in Krasnystaw up until the war
one person survived the war and moved to Szczecin,” Eisenberg
who began the application process nine months ago
Eisenberg’s reclaiming of his Jewish family’s Polish citizenship comes just months ahead of the release of his new film “A Real Pain.” The movie
which is written and directed by and starring Eisenberg
highlights the drama and hilarity of two cousins touring Poland to honor their late Holocaust survivor grandmother
“in all the places where [Eisenberg’s] family is from.” In addition to Krasnystaw
“While I was working here, I met some people who worked in positions related to the government. I said to them: ‘I would love to create better relationships between Jews and Polish people,” Eisenberg said, perhaps referencing the issue of antisemitism in Poland
Is there any way we could apply for Polish citizenship’?”
When the Polish interviewer asked what Eisenberg loved the most about the country
he again referenced the fact that his family lived there for “generations
apart from the people who were there first
the Indigenous Americans,” Eisenberg explained
“Poland made me feel a real connection to something historically bigger than myself.”

tells Danish journalist Martin Krasnik why his new book is all about death - and why literary critics should be shot
It is not that he is unpleasant or rude; he just cannot be bothered with answering the same questions
"What do you want to talk about?" Roth asks
Already I sense that this will be a difficult job
the New York Times interviewed Roth about his work being published by The Library of America
Only two other authors (Eudora Welty and Saul Bellow) have achieved this honour while still alive
But Roth would say practically nothing to the Times's increasingly desperate journalist
She says that she just returned from Berlin
where they called her Blitz (German for flash)
He looks at her with an empty stare while she jumps around taking pictures
She takes a Polaroid photo of him and inserts it into one of those souvenir snow globes
"It looks like I have a huge dandruff problem," he says in a low
"That poor guy really needs a strong dandruff shampoo."
"I always use that trick to make people smile," Flash says
"There once was this photographer from New York
'Smile!' I couldn't stand her or the whole phenomenon
So I got rid of both her and the smile."
when I'm hiding in a corner and no one sees it."
We are sitting in a backroom of Roth's literary agency in midtown New York
The room is full of books by Salman Rushdie
"It's probably wisest to place the Rushdie room in the back," Roth says - without smiling
He has arrived from his home in rural Connecticut to give an interview about The Plot Against America
which was published in America and Britain a while back
but is only just being published in my home country of Denmark
winning the presidential election in 1940 and establishing an alliance with Hitler
"I got the idea when I read an autobiography by an American historian
In a footnote he mentioned that the right wing of the Republican Party had made an attempt to nominate Lindbergh in 1940
I remembered that my family supported Roosevelt
and that everyone around me hated Lindbergh
and everyone worried about his extremely critical attitude towards Jews."
but this one seems to be Roth's great Jewish history
You would never tell Ralph Ellison that Invisible Man is his most Negro book
"Those kinds of considerations are newspaper cliches
Everyone who opens a book enters the story without noticing these labels."
"But you are seen as an American-Jewish writer
"It's not a question that interests me
You can't talk about this without walking straight out into horrible cliches that say nothing about human beings
And identity labels have nothing to do with how anyone actually experiences life."
I say that he himself writes about identity in his books
In Operation Shylock it is about who is a Jew
"But I don't accept that I write Jewish-American fiction
I don't buy that nonsense about black literature or feminist literature
Those are labels made up to strengthen some political agenda."
It takes all my strength to ask the next question: about Roth - and Roth
He appears in many of his books - as a boy or an adult author
"I just don't understand that question," he says
"I don't read or perceive books in that way
the aesthetic jolt you get from being inside this ..
I have brought to the interview copies of The Dying Animal and The Human Stain - two books about the relationship between an older man and a young woman
I tell him about a huge scandal in Denmark in which a 68-year-old author has just been stripped of all honour
His crime: he wrote openly about a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old black girl in Haiti - the daughter of his servant
Roth wants to know everything about the story
Then he says: "That author asked for it
Did he really write about how he had sex with the girl in his master bedroom
If it was an affair with a 25-year-old student at the university in Port-au-Prince
I tell him that interviewing him can be extremely difficult - like climbing an iceberg without clothes on
I wasn't put on this earth to make your life easy
Ha!" His laughter is like a proclamation - no smile
"Maybe we shouldn't be talking about literature at all," I say
I would be wonderful with a 100-year moratorium on literature talk
if you shut down all literature departments
The readers should be alone with the books
and if anyone dared to say anything about them
they would be shot or imprisoned right on the spot
A 100-year moratorium on insufferable literary talk
You should let people fight with the books on their own and rediscover what they are and what they are not
you are in a completely different universe than that of literature
and there's no bridge between the two."
Roth goes and fetches a small black plate - the cover for his new book
It is completely black with a narrow red line framing the title: Everyman
It's getting approved today," he says
"It looks as if it's about death," I say
Everyman is the name of a line of English plays from the 15th century
It was right in between the death of Chaucer and the birth of Shakespeare
The moral was always 'Work hard and get into heaven'
Everyman is the main character and he gets a visit from Death
'I am Death' and Everyman's answer is the first great line in English drama: 'Oh
thou comest when I had thee least in mind.' When I thought of you least
My new book is about death and about dying
and ask him if the publisher isn't worried that people won't want to buy it because of the colour
I think it looks like a tombstone." He waits for me to ask the next question
He thinks for a long time before answering
"Do you think a lot about death?"
"I was forced to think about it all the time when I wrote this book
I spent two whole days in a cemetery to see how they dig the holes
For years I had decided never to think about death
but it wasn't until a good friend of mine died in April that I experienced it as completely devastating
It doesn't say so in the agreement I signed
"Are you satisfied with your life?" I ask
"Eight years ago I attended a memorial ceremony for an author," he says
"An incredible man full of life and humour
And at this memorial ceremony there were all these women
"What will the women do at your funeral?"
they will probably be screaming at the casket." He looks out of the window
The thirst for women becomes more poignant
And there is a power in the pathos of sex that it didn't have before
The pathos of the female body becomes more insistent
"You said that you're afraid of dying
But the difference between today and the fear of dying I had when I was 12
is that now I have a kind of resignation towards reality
It no longer feels like a great injustice that I have to die."
"I'm exactly the opposite of religious," he says
"but I'm sure that life would be easier if I was."
it's not interesting to talk about the sheep referred to as believers
It's filled with fear and loneliness and anxiety - and I never needed religion to save me."
"There are some days that compensate completely," he says
a couple of months of these completely wonderful days as a writer
It's actually a good question [at this point I silently jump with joy]
it's a choice to be occupied with literature
But you quickly identify with the profession
Then you struggle across the decades to make your work better
to do it again and to prove to yourself that you can do it."
"I have no idea that I can do it again
How do I know that I won't run out of ideas tomorrow
It's a horrible existence being a writer filled with deprivation
I didn't discover that during the first 20 years
because I was fighting - in the ring with the literature
but then I discovered that I was in the ring all by myself."
"It was the interests in life and the attempt to get life down on the pages which made me a writer - and then I discovered that
I am standing on the outside of life"

A lorry driver says he must have fallen asleep at the wheel before smashing his tipper full of gravel through a garden wall. Lukasz Krasnik was delivering the gravel when he lost control in Percy Street, Basford
colliding with a lamppost before crashing through the wall and coming to rest just feet away from a property
which took place at around 10.25am on November 2
told officers at the scene that he had no known medical issues and must have fallen asleep at the wheel
After being charged with dangerous driving, Krasnik appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on May 31 and was given a 12-week prison sentence
He was also banned from driving for a year
Sergeant Steve Waft, of Nottinghamshire Police's Roads Policing Unit
said: "This was a serious incident that in other circumstances could have caused very serious injuries to other people
To his credit Krasnik quickly took responsibility for what happened
admitted he was at fault and apologised for what happened
"I am pleased that his case has now been resolved and hope it serves as a reminder to other professional drivers about the dangers of driving whilst tired
As I have seen several times during my career
nodding off even for a few seconds can have catastrophic consequences."

Over 10,000 volunteers – ranging in age from four years old to 90 – joined campaigns to restore nearly 100 Jewish cemeteries across Poland as part of a concerted push last year
The activities were coordinated by the newly founded Coalition of Guardians of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland
a network of organisations and activists caring for such sites
Poland was home to the largest Jewish community in Europe
Around 90% were killed under the German occupation
while many others fled during and after the war
an estimated 20,000 Jews live in the country
Polish town commemorates lost Jews with new memorial
That has left a rich Jewish cultural heritage – including hundreds of cemeteries – with very few Jews to care for it
the maintenance of many Jewish sites relies on local communities and volunteers
“The guardians see their activity as working…for their own identity and for the sake of building a broader awareness of the multicultural history of Poland,” said the Coalition of Guardians in a statement to Notes from Poland
It has helped to coordinate many small-scale events across Poland
with the largest number taking place in the province of Silesia
Repairing the world: The Olympic athlete restoring Poland’s Jewish heritage
Over a dozen mayors have organised clean-ups in their cities
with four such events taking place in Silesia’s capital Katowice
An extremely neglected Jewish cemetery in Kraśnik was also recently cleaned up by volunteers who collected over 1,500 kilograms of rubbish at the site
The coalition also helps caregivers obtain grants and donations
which came to a total of 300,000 zloty (€65,000) last year
The newly established coalition is coordinated by the Cultural Heritage Foundation, an NGO that last year launched a mobile app allowing people to document abandoned cemeteries they encounter in order to build a database of forgotten burial grounds

“When you connect separate actions into a network
it automatically generates new ones of a similar kind,” said Michał Laszczkowski
president of the foundation and initiator of the Coalition
“We already know of a dozen or so neglected cemeteries that may be covered next year too.”
One of the organisation’s most active members
has for four years organised several cleaning efforts at the Jewish necropolis in Łódź
which at 45 hectares is the largest in Poland
he has employed people sentenced to community service
Similar efforts have been undertaken at Poland’s second-largest Jewish cemetery
27 events employing 600 volunteers took place in 2021 to clear leaves and soil from tombstones
Over 150 Jewish tombstones used for road construction in WW2 unearthed in Polish town
According to the organisation’s figures
there are some 800 surviving Jewish cemeteries in Poland today
Before the Second World War there were reportedly 1,200 such sites in Poland’s modern-day territory
but many were devastated during the war or liquidated by the subsequent communist authorities
Other organisations have also been working in Poland to unearth the Jewish heritage at such sites. A database of Jewish cemeteries in Poland has been founded to catalogue all inscriptions on tombstones
Occasional acts of vandalism also occur, however. In 2021 several dozen tombstones at the Jewish cemeteries in Wrocław and Bielsko-Biała were devastated

An unsettling yet likely familiar situation: you deployed Airflow successfully
but find yourself constantly refreshing the webserver UI to make sure everything is running smoothly
You rely on certain alerting tasks to execute upon upstream failures
but if the queue is full and tasks are stalling
One solution: deploying Grafana, an open source reporting service, on top of Airflow
To start, I’ll assume basic understanding of Airflow functionality and containerization using Docker and Docker Compose. More resources can be found here for Airflow, here for Docker, and here for Docker Compose
Reference the code to follow along: https://github.com/sarahmk125/airflow-docker-metrics
To get Airflow metrics into a visually appealing dashboard that supports alerting
the following services are spun up in Docker containers declared in the docker-compose.yml file:
Prometheus is configured upon startup in the ./prometheus/prometheus.yml file which is mounted as a volume:
the scrape_configs section declares a destination (the airflow-prometheus container) and a source (the airflow-statsd-exporter container) to scrape
Provisioning in Grafana means using code to define datasources, dashboards, and alerts to exist upon startup. When starting the containers, there is a Prometheus datasource already configured in localhost:3000/datasources and an Airflow Metrics dashboard listed in localhost:3000/dashboards
The JSON can be retrieved from the Grafana UI by following these instructions
Alerts in the UI can be setup as described [here](https://medium.com/@oleksii/grafana-alerting-and-slack-notifications-3affe9d5f688); there is also an excellent Medium article here on setting up Grafana alerting with Slack
Alerts can be provisioned in the same way as dashboards and datasources
Before there was an official Docker image, Matthieu "Puckel_" Roisil released Docker support for Airflow. Starting with Airflow version 1.10.10, the Apache Software Foundation released an official image on DockerHub which is the only current and continuously updated image
many still rely on the legacy and unofficial docker-airflow repository
relying on the legacy repository means capping Airflow at version 1.10.9
Airflow 1.10.10 began supporting some cool features such as running tasks on Kubernetes
The official repository will also be where the the upcoming (and highly anticipated) Airflow 2.0 will be released
The new docker-compose declaration found in the described repository for the webserver looks something like this:
A few changes from the puckel/docker-airflow configuration to highlight:
No more worrying if your tasks are infinitely queued and not running
with dashboards and alerting available in Grafana at your fingertips
The same architecture can be run on an instance deployed in GCP or AWS for 24/7 monitoring just like it was run locally
The finished product can be found here: https://github.com/sarahmk125/airflow-docker-metrics
there’s always room for improvement:
