Latvian ace Andzejs Lebedevs says Leszno surprise package Ben Cook is made for the Polish tracks as he bids to end a dream debut season in the PGE Ekstraliga by saving the Bulls from the drop
Cook only made his European debut with Poole in Britain’s Cab Direct Championship in 2021 but has already won two league and cup doubles with the Pirates
as well as establishing himself in the Rowe Motor Oil Premiership
racing for Peterborough in 2023 and Belle Vue this year
He was handed an unexpected call-up by Leszno earlier this summer as the club faced an injury crisis
and Cook has excelled in the world’s toughest speedway league
The Cowra-born man is currently 18th in the PGE Ekstraliga average charts on 1.935 points per race – ahead of six members of the full-time Speedway GP line-up
Leszno is currently bottom of the table on nine points – but just one behind relegation rivals Czestochowa in sixth and Zielona Gora in seventh
The Lions and Falubaz were due to face off on Friday
but the meeting has been postponed due to rain.
Leszno will be in action and face a difficult assignment away to runaway league leaders Lublin
They will need Cook to continue his heroics against a side featuring four Speedway GP riders – Bartosz Zmarzlik
who are all building up to the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff on August 17
While the likes of Lebedevs and former SGP winner Janusz Kolodziej were expected to be Leszno’s heroes in 2024
Cook has emerged as an unlikely big scorer in their survival quest
Latvia’s finest admits Cook’s high-scoring exploits have taken many by surprise
His racing style is for the Polish tracks – big with nice shapes where he can build big speed
and it doesn’t matter who he is racing; he can make a great show on the track
he can pass the top riders in the world easily

Polish icon Bartosz Zmarzlik racked up 13 points for runaway PGE Ekstraliga leaders Lublin as they cruised to a 55-35 victory at home to bottom-of-the-table Leszno on Friday
Champions Lublin went into the match as red-hot favourites to triumph
and they made it 12 victories in 13 fixtures this season as Zmarzlik picked up four wins from five races
He was well supported by 10 paid 11 points from world No.4 Jack Holder
with Speedway GP star Dominik Kubera tallying 10 and SGP series leader Wiktor Przyjemski scoring nine paid 12
World No.2 Fredrik Lindgren scored four paid six points
Polish rider Grzegorz Zengota topped the Leszno score chart on eight paid nine points
with Aussie rising star Ben Cook adding seven – collecting two race wins and beating three of Lublin’s four SGP riders
Lublin has already secured top spot in the PGE Ekstraliga table ahead of the play-offs – holding a 13-point lead over Gorzow in second
Leszno’s loss leaves them a point adrift at the bottom of the table on nine – one behind Czestochowa in sixth and Zielona Gora in seventh
but the match was postponed due to an adverse weather forecast
If Czestochowa wins the home match – rescheduled for Thursday – they will be guaranteed a place in the PGE Ekstraliga for 2025 as they won 52-37 when the teams met in Zielona Gora on June 13
Sunday’s fixtures see Torun host near neighbours Grudziadz
while Gorzow welcomes Wroclaw to the Edward Jancarz Stadium

Weir Minerals Europe has expanded its operations in Poland, with the opening of a new facility in Leszno.
The new centre is three times the size of the existing facility and includes increased office space, a specialist training area and two overhead cranes – one 20m high.
“The success of our activities in Europe meant that the team outgrew the existing facility in Poland in a relatively short space of time,” explained Bruce Cooke, Weir Minerals Europe’s Comminution general manager. “The new centre enables us to keep a sizeable inventory, incorporate training and testing facilities, and offer better support to customers who require customised products for their applications.”
A number of jobs have been created as a result of the expansion and the growing installed base of Trio products. The Leszno facility is set to become one of Weir’s key facilities for Trio products in Europe, holding a large inventory of products and spare parts.
The new centre will play an important role in helping the local team in Poland to manage its growing customer base and increasing demand for replacement parts. With the increased space, the Weir Minerals team will also be able to offer on-site manufacturing services including fitting screen decks, changing crusher liners and some equipment assembly.
Part of the new premises will focus on aftersales care. The Weir Minerals maintenance team will train customers’ service personnel and engineers in key areas such as equipment maintenance, and in how to spot the signs that repairs may be required.

Conservator Dodo Shenhav doing restoration work on street lamps from Leszno Street in the Warsaw ghetto
in advance of their display in the Holocaust History Museum in Yad Vashem
Druckman gave the chess game to his friend Menachem Scharf as a farewell gift
Yad Vashem Artifacts CollectionDonated by Menachem Scharf
Part II (See Blog "The Artifacts at Yad Vashem: Silent Witnesses to the Shoah” part I)
After almost four decades of hiding in the shadows
artifacts now play an important role in providing testimony and attesting to the events that occurred during the Holocaust
The Yad Vashem Artifacts Collection contains a wide variety of items that survived the Holocaust
from personal effects to objects of worship or other everyday items used in the camps and in hiding
Some were created in extreme circumstances with limited means at hand; others reveal artistic qualities
and serve as witnesses of the prewar splendor of now destroyed communities
play a major role in preserving the memory of the Holocaust and its victims
the Artifacts Collection has grown tremendously
with approximately 42,000 new artifacts added
the Artifacts Department of Yad Vashem’s Museum Division plays an active role in gathering Holocaust-era items from across Europe and North Africa
the more difficult it will be for us to locate new objects
and reveal the stories that accompany them," notes Artifacts Department Director Michael Tal
Each artifact Yad Vashem receives comes with a number of trying challenges
the item undergoes a long process of cataloging
research an extensive conservation process
Yad Vashem receives items from all over the world
and the origin of each requires a team of researchers who specialize in the different regions in which the article originates
"In order to understand the history of the family to which the item belonged
one must have a historical understanding of the place in which they lived," explains Tal
the history of the Jews of Greece is very different from that of Belarus."
Another challenge the department faces is the diversity of materials from which the artifact is made
each requiring specialized conservation techniques according to the material
Yad Vashem has acquired experts with the required skills and know-how in order to conserve these unique and fragile items
the department is also tasked with storing the items
which greatly vary in size and shape – from pendants and spoons to cradles and even pianos
Yad Vashem plans to open a new facility in the coming years
With construction expected to be complete by 2022
the Shapell Family Collections Center will comprise approximately 6,000 square meters (65,000 square feet) of new conservation and storage spaces for Yad Vashem's unrivalled and invaluable growing collections of Holocaust-era art
The Collections Center will also provide optimal conditions for the dedicated professionals
conservationists and archivists taking care of these items each day
as well as designated work spaces for researchers
“It is important for us to fulfill to our mission of commemorating the victims for future generations
The new Shapell Family Collections Center means we can preserve and investigate every authentic and relevant item we receive."
Yad Vashem’s impressive and diverse Artifacts Collection is the largest in the world
Tal and his team continue the important mission
instituted by former Artifacts Department Director Haviva Peled Carmeli z"l
to understand the artifact in its entirety – including any connection to similar items already housed at Yad Vashem
"Our current approach is to try to understand the article in a general sense and also to identify any common denominator with other items in our collection," Tal continues
"A single item can tell us not only about an individual or a family
but also how a group of items speak to each other
and thus shed new light on the Shoah overall
which come from widely varying people and places
This sparked our curiosity: Was there was a particular relationship between chess and the Jewish world
and soon concluded that this game was very popular at the time within the Jewish community
it frequently accompanied the Jews in their flight from homes and communities
In spite of the fear and oppression they faced
which gave them a brief respite from their harsh reality."
Another unique phenomenon during the Holocaust were recipe books
Yad Vashem houses several copies that were written in ghettos and concentration camps
They give a glimpse into daily life in the camps and how they were used by prisoners to help deal with loneliness
to create friendships and to fight hunger by imagining that they were eating those foods
“By researching these different recipe books
we were able to discover that astonishingly
where they were literally starving to death
It was of course impossible for them to actually create these recipes
but they wrote them down anyway from memory
as a way for them to remember their pre-Holocaust life
This very act paradoxically gave them strength

an imprisoned community in Nazi-occupied Poland banded together to contain a deadly epidemic of typhus
largely without the aid of vaccines or effective medicines
they likely relied on measures like education
Some of the lessons gleaned from that epidemic may very well apply to our current pandemic
little work had been done by others to figure out what this outbreak really looked like
“I began checking historical accounts and was amazed that this had been missed
I realized that this was incredibly important,” Stone told Gizmodo
His team’s findings, published in Science Advances
Typhus had been devastating the Warsaw Ghetto’s residents as late as October 1941
it seemed to mysteriously decline by the year’s end
when outbreaks of typhus historically got worse
Stone worried that death records around that time period may have been incomplete
but he eventually found confirmation of the decline from a historian’s daily accounts of the Ghetto
Nearby towns didn’t experience a similar drop in typhus that winter
indicating that something different was happening in Warsaw
Though a somewhat effective vaccine for typhus was invented shortly before the start of World War II and may even have been smuggled into the Warsaw Ghetto
few people are thought to have had access to it
And it would be decades before effective antibiotics for typhus would be widely available
So as best as historical records and Stone’s research can tell
it’s likely that members of the community and doctors there relied on more old-fashioned public health measures to stop the outbreak
These measures included better sanitation and hygiene practices by residents
reinforced by educational lectures that hundreds of people may have attended
There were also reports of underground universities
where young medical students got training on how best to respond to epidemic diseases like typhus
And there was probably some social distancing
though it wouldn’t have been considered a very novel thing at the time
“It was like common knowledge: ‘Don’t get close to someone with typhus
because you don’t want to be the next person the lice gets onto,’” Stone said
These measures only mitigated the devastation caused by typhus that year
and the Nazis actively sabotaged efforts to provide people with more food and other resources
Stone’s model suggests that around 100,000 people contracted typhus during that time
and it played a large role in the 80,000 to 100,000 deaths that his team also suspects occurred in 1941
But they did probably forestall a much worse outbreak that could have been two to three times larger
many residents of the Ghetto began being sent to the Nazi death camps that ultimately killed millions of people
Stone’s work began before the covid-19 pandemic
and the two diseases are different in very important ways (among other things
But he does think his team’s findings are especially timely
“One takeaway would be that public health measures during an epidemic can be effective—even if you don’t realize they’re working
most people were starving and probably didn’t know what was going on around them or that what they were doing was really helping,” Stone said
covid-19 has a knack for exploiting the divides of the world around it
That doesn’t have to be the end of the story
The details might have been different during WWII
but the same principles apply today: A disease spread by people can be stopped by people
even in the absence of a miracle cure or vaccine

Latvian ace Andzejs Lebedevs will race on in Poland’s PGE Ekstraliga in 2024 after his switch to Leszno was confirmed

And in the biggest season of his career to date
as well as competing for Swedish champions Dackarna and Danish club Fjelsted
Posting on Facebook following the Leszno announcement
a delighted Lebedevs said: “Thank you for your trust
and I am already working hard because being a Bull is hard
but I want to be a strong Bull that the fans will be happy with.”
Danish international Mads Hansen has completed a move to Czestochowa
where he will replace 2021 FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship winner Jakub Miskowiak as the club’s under-24 rider
Hansen finished second to Miskowiak in the 2021 World Under-21s

We don’t know much about Salomea Ostrowska
We don’t have information about where she came from
She had been living in the Warsaw Ghetto at 27 Ogrodowa street
being employed at the Quarantine Service at 109/111 Leszno street
The quarantine was the threshold of the ghetto
a place of isolation for the Jews who were resettled to the ghetto
an entrance and an exit for the Jewish poverty
Inhabitants of the ghetto were also being held there in case of danger of an epidemic of diseases such as typhus
Brutal scenes were often taking place there
people were being held there for several days despite being in a good health condition; hunger
the despair and horror of Jewish life became fully revealed
children squeezed and suffocated to death on the way (refugees from Grójec
sons and brothers sending desperate messages to their loved ones that they were taken away from the street
was to support the employees of the quarantine
especially in terms of providing food and facilitating contact with families in the ghetto (carrying letters and parcels)
She was writing about her work for refugees and displaced persons: We were working honourably
In the first part of the Ringelblum Archive
It was based on her observations from night shifts and daily reports of the institution
Jews from Polish towns and villages keep arriving
The quarantine is the threshold of their new life
The spacious rooms of the former school are grey withdirt
they arrive in a place where they receive a cup of coffee and some bread – if it is available
An individual person disappears in the giant human mass
People are crowded – one cannot tell one face from another
everyone has their own problems and challenges
Everyone has requests which we cannot respond to
I look into the window and I think that it is true after all that bread has a golden colour
They are so hungry that he is too afraid to let them into the bath
so two ladies go to the kitchen to cook it and give it to the children
An ambulance parked in front of the quarantine
They are taking away the sick and the elderly
Assistants say that his daughter took away his shoes because she believes that it would be a pity to lose the shoes
Ostrowska had met former inmates of the camp for displaced persons in Pomiechówek
Together with Hersz Wasser and two other people
she was listening to the inmates and writing down their accounts
they were experiencing brutality from the guards
who were recruited usually from local volksdeutschs
plus a Jewish policeman Majloch Hoppenblum
also due to shootings or torture by the guards
Ostrowska had also contributed more accounts to the Archive: testimonies from September 1939 and stories shared by the Jews who were escaping to the ghetto from the East (Vilnius and other directions) after 1941
She was receiving a small pay (her name is included in the Oneg Shabbat’s „Accounting Books”
The date and place of her death remain unknown

“The courts in Leszno were the border and at the same time the link between the two worlds”
says Hanna Dzielińska (Hanka Warszawianka)
The tenth episode of the series ‘Remnatns of the Warsaw Ghetto’ tells of the Grodzki courts at Solidarity 127 Avenue (formerly Leszno 53/55 Street)
once colloquially called the Courts of Leszno
They were a point of contact between the ghetto and the ‘Aryan’ side
It was through the courts that people working with Żegota
Agnieszka Witkowska-Krych writes more about the functioning of the Courts in Leszno during the occupation in the 9th part of the column series “Taste of ghetto life”: http://1943.pl/en/artykul/the-taste-of-life-in-the-ghetto-9/
‘Remnants of the Warsaw Ghetto’ is a film series of 16 short guided tours presenting the history of places and people associated with them
The following places will be presented: Umschlagplatz; Anielewicz Mound; Szmul Zygielbojm Monument; Monument of the Ghetto Heroes; Grzybowski Square; Mariańska Street and the Nursing School; Nożyk Synagogue; Great Synagogue at Tłomackie Street; Nalewki Street; Femina Cinema Theater; Courts at Leszno Street; Chłodna Street; Waliców Street; The Jewish Cemetery at Okopowa Street
and the Bersohn and Bauman Hospital – the place where the permanent exhibition of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum will be created

organized by the Warsaw Ghetto Museum in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and TSKŻ – the Social and Cultural Society of Jews in Poland
Polish racer Janusz Kolodziej collected 11 paid 13 points as Leszno snatched a last-heat 46-44 win at home to PGE Ekstraliga newcomers Krosno on Sunday
who received a lively reception as he returned to his old club
Krosno had a 43-41 advantage going into heat 15
Doyle endeared himself to the away fans with a vital victory over Leszno’s 2012 world champion Chris Holder and returning local favourite Bartosz Smektala in race 14
But the Bulls hit back in style as Grzegorz Zengota led Kolodziej to a 5-1 over Andzejs Lebedevs and Vaclav Milik in heat 15
Doyle ended his PGE Ekstraliga debut for Krosno with 10 points
while Speedway GP first reserve Lebedevs notched nine and Czech racer Milik scored seven paid nine points
Holder registering eight and Smektala picking up seven paid nine
The day’s other scheduled meeting between champions Lublin and 2022 runners-up Wroclaw was postponed due to an adverse weather forecast

We invite you to read another article by Agnieszka Witkowska-Krych in a series entitled “Life in the Ghetto”
in which the authoress writes about such issues as problems with feeding the residents of the ghetto
the activity of meal points that were organized on an ad hoc basis for its starving residents
as well as kitchens dedicated to children and infants
The author talks about the buildings of Courts that served as trafficking points for food smugglers
Janusz Korczak’s efforts to obtain help for the Main House of Shelter
about people and institutions which had to face a nearly impossible task: feeding and saving people from starving to death
The articles are published on our website every week
We invite you to read these uneasy accounts
was placed in the Warsaw ghetto as a teenager
He portrays the hunger that accompanied the life of the residents of the closed district in a dramatic novel entitled ”Bread for the Departed”
based on facts and his own experiences: „The first days of hunger are the worst
each word becomes a painful noise ringing in the ears
The jaws clench of their own accord and you feel a pain behind the ears at the sight of a tin spoon abandoned on a table
A simple thought about a piece of swede is enough – suddenly your teeth tear stringy pulp apart with a crunch
flows down your throat and wets the swollen tongue
(…) The thought separates itself from swede and floats high above
hundreds of thousands of people crammed in a small
designated area of the so-called North District
next to people who were craving bread and dreamed about swede
there were those who ate at the L’Ourse café
and “Gazeta Żydowska” [“The Jewish Newspaper”] informed on August 1
that the kitchen at 11 Leszno Street „will distribute 50 grams of candy for adults and additionally for children.” This does not change the general picture of the place in which acquiring food was a matter of great importance – necessary for

or food fraud by unfair manufacturers and/or sellers
it was considered a Gestapo agency by the residents of the capital’s closed district
This institution was located at 13 Leszno Street
and so it was commonly called the “Thirteen”
Henryk Bryskier wrote about the employees of this institution in the following way: “The organizers of the said Office
proceeded to recruit lower officers and senior officials from among the countrymen they knew
The ones who joined in were above all refugees
or provincial resettlers from Lodz and Czestochowa
They were dressed up in official hats with a green rim and yellow armbands
Ranks and identification cards were given […]
entitling them to walk even after the curfew” (Henryk Bryskier
Żydzi pod swastyką czyli getto w Warszawie w XX wieku [Jews Under the Swastika
The leaders of the “Thirteen” were: Abraham Gancwajch
Emanuel Ringelblum wrote about the former: “A lot has been said about Gancwajch lately
[…] In the street they say that night orgies are taking place in Gancwajch’s premises
How much truth there is in it – I could not find out
Gancwajch promises to set up a kitchen for Jews from Leszno (Street)
but people are craving to get into his premises” (Emanuel Ringelblum Kronika getta warszawskiego [The Chronicle of the Warsaw Ghetto]
Gancwajch was known in the ghetto for arranging meetings to which he would invite representatives of the ghetto’s cultural and social elite
Adam Czerniaków noted in his diary under May 4
among others: “A few days ago Gancwajch organized a meeting (tea)
Korczak was there” (Adama Czerniakowa dziennik z getta warszawskiego [The Warsaw Diary of Adam Czerniakow]: ed
added: “There were decent people who had been in their entourage for some time
[…] The fear of the <<Thirteen >> is so great that some honest people do not dare not come when invited by them
there are many people who are fooled by his sweet words and [that] he is trying to prove what good deeds he has done to the Jews
how many severe restrictions he has overturned […]
The impression that his speeches make (he gives great speeches in Jewish and Hebrew) collapses very quickly
People sober up and all is left for them is a bad after-taste” (Emanuel Ringelblum
Kronika getta warszawskiego [The Chronicle of the Warsaw Ghetto]
the more so because the splendid (and therefore very expensive) parties thrown by Gancwajch are known among the ghetto’s inhabitants
connected with the bar mitzvah of Abraham Gancwajch’s son – Samuel
in the documents collected by Emanueal Ringelblum’s collaborators: “On the first day of Shavuot a morning performance took place at the New Azazel Theater
which had been bought out by the “Thirteen”
[…] Here is what I saw there: […] A prince approaches the table and gives a <<drasha>> in the language of his forefathers
He assures that he will be a good Jew and – adds hesitating – a decent man
He announces that he is aware of his rights and obligations

began the so-called liquidation action of the Warsaw Ghetto
the Jews were to be "relocated to the East"
Every day 3,000 to 8,000 people were deported to Treblinka from the Umschlagplatz in Warsaw; 300,000 Jews were led this way during the 46 days of the "operation"
Only a handful of those led onto the trains managed to jump out and saved themselves
Few refugees from Treblinka returned to Warsaw and provided information about gas chambers
many died from lack of air while being transported in overcrowded cattle cars
in the face of the inevitable extermination
the Jews decided to fight for honor and a dignified death
the uprising was suppressed by the German occupant
and Warsaw was recognized as a city "judenfrei" – free of Jews
the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute organizes the March of Remembrance on the anniversary of these tragic events
commemorating the largest Jewish community in pre-war Europe
