A photographic journey by artist Leslie Starobin that explores Holocaust memory and family history is on view in a public exhibition on the Brown University campus through May 30 [Brown University] — In a new exhibition at Brown University artist Leslie Starobin intertwines past and present with family and political history through a fusion of photography and text that recounts the experiences of two sisters who survived the Holocaust The exhibition — which represents the sisters’ struggles after being liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau and the transmission of their memories to younger generations of their family — is on view at Brown’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs through May 30. Titled “Looming in the Shadows of Lodz,” the exhibition is part of the Art at Watson initiative A professor emerita of art at Framingham State University Starobin describes the images in the exhibition as “photo narratives” that combine contemporary photographs of Lodz with captions derived from the recollections of the two sisters “‘Looming in the Shadows of Lodz’ underscores how artists interpret history through a personal lens encouraging viewers to respond based on their lived experiences,” Starobin said “Inviting meaningful dialogue and reflection the artworks speak to those familiar and unfamiliar with this chapter in world history.” Starobin’s journey to creating the exhibition began in 2019 when she traveled to Poland with her husband and children “We traveled on the 75th anniversary of our relatives’ deportation to Auschwitz from the Lodz Ghetto the last ghetto to be liquidated by the Nazis,” Starobin said I photographed the Altman family residences the cemetery where they hid from the Nazis and the Radegast train station where they boarded cattle cars to the death camp.” Starobin gathered the sisters’ recollections through decades of conversations with Starobin’s mother-in-law “The conversations were scattered over the years,” Starobin recalled “We might be sitting around the kitchen table and my mother-in-law would suddenly recall something from the middle of the war.” Starobin carried a small digital recording device with her Starobin said the exhibition examines how storytelling bridges generations and preserves familial narratives across time and space this exhibition aspires to connect with contemporary viewers some of whom might be uninformed about the Holocaust,” Starobin said “Unraveling the threads of human memory has long been central to my creative process.” Some of the photographs in the exhibition appear benign at first glance a senior fellow in international and public affairs at the Watson Institute who was one of the organizers of the exhibition said the subject matter is timely and important stark inequalities and the urgent threat of climate change,” Ingham said other moments have similarly tested our shared humanity The atrocities of the Holocaust serve as a stark reminder of the darkness that can emerge when empathy and understanding are lost.” the exhibition helps to preserve personal narratives that are vanishing from collective memory art can serve as an educational catalyst,” Starobin said “Looming in the Shadows of Lodz” is on view  through May 30 in Stephen Robert ’62 Hall at 280 Brook St This story was adapted from an article by Pete Bilderback, a communications and outreach specialist at the Watson Institute. Łódź (pronounced woodge) is a red-brick city that grew fabulously wealthy in the 19th century on the back of its massive textile industry, then went into decline after WWII. Since 2000 it has been gradually reinventing itself as a modern metropolis (it is Poland's third-largest city) and rebuilding its once-crumbling city centre. Photo Credit: Azurae Cruz In Art at Watson's latest exhibition "Looming in the Shadows of Lodz" by Massachusetts-based artist Leslie Starobin the past and the present collide with family and political history the exhibition tells the story of two sisters who survived the Holocaust their plight after liberation from Auschwitz-Birkenau and how those memories have been passed down through generations.  which Starobin calls "photo narratives," depict scenes from present-day Lodz Poland and the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp paired with captions drawn from the memories of the two sisters art can serve as an educational catalyst," said Starobin "'Looming in the Shadows of Lodz' underscores how artists interpret history through a personal lens encouraging viewers to respond in part based on their lived experiences Inviting meaningful dialogue and reflection the artworks speak to those familiar and unfamiliar with this chapter in world history." Starobin was inspired to create "Looming in the Shadows of Lodz" after a "roots journey" she made to Poland in 2019 with her husband and children "We traveled on the 75th anniversary of our relatives' deportation to Auschwitz from the Lodz Ghetto the last one to be liquidated by the Nazis," she said and the Radegast train station where they boarded cattle cars to the death camp." While the photos and text do not address Starobin's own lived experience she noted the exhibition "examines how storytelling connects the generations in their quest to pass down and preserve familial narratives across time and space some of whom might be uninformed about the Holocaust." Starobin said that "unraveling the threads of human memory" has long been central to her creative process Watson Senior Fellow Veronica Ingham, who co-managed the exhibition with Watson Communications Specialist and Writer Pete Bilderback The atrocities of the Holocaust during World War II serve as a stark reminder of the darkness that can emerge when empathy and understanding are lost."  marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau," said Bilderback "What happened there and the events that preceded and followed it are quickly passing from living memory we must increasingly rely on generational memory of the Holocaust to convey the horror of those events from a personal perspective Leslie's artwork speaks powerfully toward that end." Ingham added "We hope this exhibition will inspire reflection on our past and spark our imagination for a brighter future — a chance to rediscover our shared humanity."  The project emerged from decades of informal conversations Starobin had with her mother-in-law "The conversations were scattered over the years," said Starobin "We might be sitting around the kitchen table And my mother-in-law would think of something that happened in the middle of the war and she would just sort of start talking." Starobin carried a small digital recording device with her for such occasions A perfectly composed view of a tree from a window is framed by text from Dorka Berger: "May 1 Textbook history and personal family history collide violently in an image of the infamous entrance to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp that is accompanied by text drawn from Starobin's mother-in-law's memory While the exhibition examines family history it also preserves a personal narrative of events that are disappearing from living memory: both the Holocaust itself and the exodus of Jews from Europe — the Brihah — that happened in its aftermath From the beginning of July 1945 to the end of September 1946 over 111,000 Jews left Poland for the British Mandate for Palestine with the Brihah haunted by memories of the Holocaust and chastened by continuing discrimination and hatred "Dorka is the only relative alive to contribute further to this project," said Starobin Some of the text is drawn from her recently discovered journal "The Diary of Dwojra Altman," Dorka's long-lost chronicle from July 1945 Starobin noted that "although Dorka did not travel to Poland with us she directed us emotionally from the sidelines," among other things providing addresses and locations the family should visit "Dorka poured over the photographs from Poland while revealing new memories of the past," said Starobin Dorka is the revered elder of the family," said Starobin she aspires to fulfill the Jewish commandment 'L'haggid' ('And you should tell your children')." With "Looming in the Shadows of Lodz," Starobin honors the same commandment "Looming in the Shadows of Lodz" opens with a reception at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, on the first floor of Stephen Robert '62 Hall at 280 Brook St. in Providence, RI. a new high-speed connection to the major transport hub and airport known as Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) As the evaluation process of these bids begins the outcome hinges on the thoroughness and quality of the documentation provided according to project promoter CPK which is the largest tender CPK has launched to date involves the construction of a 4.6km-long tunnel connecting the “Retkinia” chamber to the “Fabryczna” chamber This tunnel aims to enhance high-speed rail connectivity between major Polish cities The CPK has allocated PLN 2.8bn (£543M) gross for the project with the bids ranging from PLN 2.166bn (£420M) to PLN 2.797bn (£542.5M) gross All submissions fall within the allocated budget which CPK said indicates its diligent preparation The evaluation criteria prioritise price and personnel qualifications giving 70% weight to cost and 30% to the contractor’s qualifications The awarded contractor is expected to complete the project within 46 months of signing the contract anticipated to take place in the second half of 2025 The complexity of the project is underscored by the extensive documentation required for the tender—around 2,000 documents in total—and CPK fielded approximately 1,000 questions from 25 potential bidders The tunnel construction is particularly notable as it will traverse densely populated areas in Łódź necessitating careful geotechnical assessments and structural safeguards from the selected contractor Construction is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 which includes the entire stretch of railway line no coinciding with the launch of a new national airport CPK the travel time between Warsaw and Łódź is projected to be reduced to just 40 minutes facilitating the “100 Minutes Poland” project aimed at enhancing the country’s rail connections The bids submitted are from the following contractors: Poland minister of infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak said: “The safety of people living in the immediate vicinity of the ongoing investment is a priority All residents of Łódź must be assured that the project is being conducted responsibly adhering to the highest technical standards I am pleased that we are consistently marking important steps in the CPK programme.” Deputy minister of infrastructure and CPK government commissioner Maciej Lasek added: “This is an exceptionally ambitious undertaking as the Łódź tunnel will have the largest diameter of any underground structure constructed to date using the TBM method in Poland It will also become the longest tunnel of its kind built as a single section.” CPK president Filip Czernicki said: “High-Speed Rail presents a significant developmental opportunity for Poland and the tunnel itself is a major and essential project for the residents of Łódź Any initial inconveniences related to construction will pay off in the coming years The city will gain many rapid connections with the country’s largest cities without impacting residents’ quality of life as trains will operate tens of metres underground.” Earlier this year, the final designs for the £25bn CPK airport and transport hub were revealed Like what you've read? To receive New patron saint is Saint Nicholas and which has a direct air connection with Łódź Flights between Łódź and Alicante operate twice a week and Santa took advantage of this route to reach the children of Łódź.🎅 The Ryanair plane landed on time Children waiting on the tarmac eagerly searched for Santa at the airplane door Santa!” When the excitement reached its peak Santa was greeted at the airplane stairs by Anna Midera as well as elves and a white lion from the Borysew Zoo handing out candies.🎅 “I’ve flown in from faraway Spain That’s where I’ve been preparing with my reindeer for the Christmas season He has to double and triple his efforts to make it to all the children filled with happiness and sprinkled with white snow,” said Santa.🎅 While Santa was chatting with the children ground staff unloaded the plane’s cargo holds Everything had to follow proper procedures: several carts went to the baggage sorting area for customs checks before being placed on the conveyor belt in the arrivals hall Santa personally handed out individually ordered gifts to each child and hoodies and t-shirts specially sewn for teenagers in foster care by a wonderful anonymous donor.🎅 “For the eighth time we are welcoming Santa to our airport to share moments of joy and emotion we’ve prepared countless gifts for the youngest the charitable campaign ‘Santa’s Landing in Łódź’ included 20 companies Santa will visit the Janusz Korczak Pediatric Hospital for the first time hoping to bring some joy to its young patients,” said Anna Midera president of Łódź Airport.🎅 Santa’s convoy departed from the airport terminal and visited the St Stanisława Leszczyńska Mother and Child Home in Łódź A heartfelt thank you to the partners who helped bring smiles to children’s faces: The future of cities and their sustainable development hinges on the collaboration of diverse stakeholders: local authorities as well as academic and research institutions The dynamic technological shifts currently taking place The initiatives undertaken by the city of Łódź in this field can serve an inspiration demonstrating how to foster collaboration and the development of innovative solutions establishing itself as a rising technological leader of the 21st century while fostering the growth of its life sciences ecosystem With a robust academic landscape – boasting over twenty universities – and thriving R&D partnerships between academia and industry the city continues to cultivate a highly skilled pool of young professionals Complementing this is a steadily expanding portfolio of new-generation office spaces ensuring that new investments find a supportive environment in Łódź The Office of Economic Development and International Cooperation (Invest in Lodz) – with its unique position in the market enabling it to shape the city’s growth and serve the community – sees its role as a facilitator strengthening the shared vision for the sector’s development This commitment is evident in initiatives such as the two editions of the “Tech4Life” conference which explore key topics at the intersection of technology and healthcare The dedicated Life Science Program Council further exemplifies the innovative approach driving Łódź’s life sciences sector including leading medical companies (Adamed Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital Institute) and academic institutions (Medical University of Łódź with the Clinical-Didactic Center) the Council leverages its flexibility to serve as a collaborative platform for fostering knowledge exchange and promoting joint business and scientific initiatives thus strengthening the connections between diverse participants in the life sciences ecosystem A key way the Life Science Council advances its goals is by actively participating in industry events Its members were present at the Swiss BioTech 2024 as well as at the Warsaw edition of CEBio-Forum the Council effectively showcased the unified strengths of the Łódź life sciences sector enhancing the visibility of the region’s market opportunities a pioneering research and development complex specializing in diagnostics and therapies for civilization diseases says: The life sciences sector is at the forefront of tackling challenges posed by the modern world such as civilization diseases the industry is advancing at a truly impressive pace putting the city on the map of Poland as a recognized center of innovation MOLecoLAB considers the region to be a premiere location for bringing our vision to life – introducing groundbreaking technologies and products that reshape the future of science and medicine Our work epitomizes innovation and includes research on biomaterials the development of personalized targeted therapies These efforts demand access to state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled talent with an interdisciplinary education background and companies is essential to achieving our goals Creating robust ecosystems enables us to turn scientific discoveries into practical market solutions City’s initiatives are yielding tangible results attracting investors and fostering partnerships between science and business these initiatives require continued investment in education and innovation to unlock the region’s full potential Let’s take a closer look at the aforementioned potential This was the focus of the “Life Science – DNA of Łódź” study designed to highlight the region’s strengths and development opportunities reveals that more than 650 entities from key life sciences related sectors are based in Łódź Local universities are currently enrolled by approx 3,000 students in fields such as biotechnology and medical analytics – the highly sought-after workforce of tomorrow Among these institutions the Medical University of Łódź stands out with its Clinical-Didactic Center (CKD) leading the way in developing trail blazing academic infrastructure and fostering R&D activities Deputy Director for Medical and Organizational Affairs at CKD explains: The Medical University of Łódź is the largest institution of its kind in Poland offering a comprehensive range of medical and education programs our core mission remains: to educate the doctors We will only see a return on our investment if we inspire future medical professionals to engage with our activities – something we can achieve by adopting agile practices as the traditional hierarchical structure that has long defined our operations is not appealing to the young talent we aim to attract This is one of the chief reasons we are pleased to participate in the Life Sciences Council platform which nurtures clear and unified communication at the city level absolutely essential for emphasizing the opportunities and development of the life sciences sector in Łódź It enables all local participants – diverse entities shaping the sector – to effectively pursue their goals This synergy is further strengthened by joint participation in international industry conferences and the “Tech4Life: Data in Health” conference held in Łódź The broad representation within the Council ensures that the positions we develop collectively enhance our status and influence The statements above clearly highlight the pivotal role played by the Life Sciences Council and indicate that the sector in Łódź has reached a level of maturity enabling it to fully leverage its efforts The maturity of the broadly defined life sciences sector is also the result of long-term initiatives by various Łódź- based entities that have worked to create an environment conducive to growth across the broader life sciences sector One such initiative is the prestigious “Management Leaders – Best Managed Public Hospitals” competition organized for nearly a decade by BFF Banking Group an Italian financial corporation with expertise in capital instruments operates a Łódź office with 250 employees focused on supporting the financial liquidity of Polish healthcare institutions Under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of Łódź the competition aims to recognize facilities that excel in financial efficiency while maintaining high standards of medical care The initiative enjoys strong support from both industry professionals and medical experts The awards ceremony held in 2023 at the Scena Monopolis Theatre in Łódź offers an excellent platform for knowledge exchange and networking The city of Łódź is making a confident investment in the life sciences sector bringing together and energizing key participants to support an ecosystem where science and local government collaborate towards shared goals successfully applied in initiatives such as “Młodzi w Łodzi” (which connects young talent with future employers) and “Startups Powered by Invest in Lodz” (accelerating startups on their growth journey) is now being extended to the life sciences sector demonstrate they certainly are on board with this vision Photo: Tech4Life in Łodz; Source: Invest in Lodz Participants of the march walked the historic route that once bore witness to the suffering of the ghetto’s inhabitants wreaths were laid and prayers offered in memory of the victims The ceremony was followed by a march to the the last train left this station for Auschwitz on August 29 We gather to remember those who suffered in the Łódź Ghetto and to share some lesser-known stories of resilience Our aim at the March of the Living is to educate the young generation to learn from the tragic past of the Holocaust We must ensure that what happened during the Holocaust is never forgotten.” was one of the most significant sites of Jewish suffering and resistance during the Holocaust who were forced into labour under brutal conditions By the time the ghetto was liquidated in 1944 more than 200,000 Jews had passed through it with the vast majority being sent to their deaths The destruction of Polish Jewry was nearly complete by the end of the war with over 90% of Poland’s pre-war Jewish population of 3.3 From the start of the new financial year on 1 March 2025, the Otto Group’s central logistics service provider will take over the returns processing operations of fashion brand bonprix (also part of the Otto Group) in Łódź, Poland. This move not only strengthens our position in Poland but also accelerates our dynamic growth towards becoming one of the most successful B2C fulfilment service providers in European e-commerce, says Kevin Kufs, CEO of Hermes Fulfilment. Up to 500 employees are involved in returns processing at the Łódź site. The change in ownership will have little impact on their day-to-day work – only the name of their employer will change. All jobs will be retained, confirms Kevin Kufs. bonprix will continue to process all European returns at this site and will maintain its presence in Łódź across other business areas. We are pleased to integrate the long-standing bonprix facility into our network, further expanding our international reach and aligning operations in Łódź with our returns processing in Iłowa, explains Kevin Kufs. The Iłowa site handles returns for OTTO, processing primarily clothing, footwear, jewellery and small electrical goods. Adjacent to this returns centre, Hermes Fulfilment has been operating a state-of-the-art, nine-hall distribution centre since 2024. Covering 268,000 square metres, this facility sets new benchmarks in logistics efficiency and technology. By incorporating the Łódź returns operation into our network, we are strengthening the capabilities of our now three logistics centres in Poland and continuously developing them, says Kevin Kufs. Hermes Fulfilment’s strategic goal is to become one of the top three B2C fulfilment service providers for parcel and bulk logistics in European e-commerce by 2028. Kevin Kufs adds: With our logistics centres in Germany and additional sites in Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Poland, we have laid the foundation for further growth.  The current head to head record for the teams are Lech Poznan 6 win(s) Have kept the most clean sheets in the competition (10) Have scored 6 goals in their last 5 matches Sebastian Kerk has created the most big chances for Widzew Łódź (6) Imad Rondic has the most shots on target per match for Widzew Łódź (1) 31 Jan 2025 19:30:00 GMT?Lech Poznan won 4–1 over Widzew Łódź on Fri 31 Jan 2025 19:30:00 GMT.InsightsHave scored 8 goals in their last 5 matches Lech Poznan is playing home against Widzew Łódź at Enea Stadion on Fri
