construction of the D11 motorway will begin in Královec
The section between Trutnov and the Polish border is expected to be completed by 2027 and will connect to the Polish S3 expressway
The start of construction was delayed for several months due to disputes over the contractor selection
The Polish company Budimex SA and a Czech-Slovak-Hungarian consortium led by MI Roads of the Metrostav Group competed for the contract
the media reported that construction had stalled
All complications have since been resolved in record time,” wrote Martin Kupka
The Minister emphasised that the 21-kilometre section of the D11 motorway represents the largest road contract in the history of the Czech Roads and Motorways Directorate (RSD)
and three level crossings will be built between Trutnov and the Polish border
Czech media have highlighted that no other motorway of such engineering complexity has ever been built in the country
The first step will be the construction of a three-kilometre section between Královec and Bernartice
the expressway currently allows access to the Lubawka junction
will be opened when the D11 section in the Czech Republic is completed
“This is an extremely demanding project and the largest RSD order in decades
It’s crucial to maximise the remaining time before winter
We need to start construction as soon as possible
and we are now providing RSD with all the necessary support,” said Zdenek Ludvik
The Czech Roads and Motorways Directorate is also preparing the second missing section of the D11 motorway between Jaromer and Trutnov
the tender for this contract will be announced later this year
with construction expected to begin next year
most of the S3 route has already been completed
the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways opened the section of the expressway between the Bolków and Kamienna Góra Północ junctions
The S3 section between Świnoujście and Troszyn in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship is still under construction and is expected to be operational by the end of 2024
Once the Świnoujście-Troszyn section is finished
a modern transport route will span Poland’s western border
connecting the ports of Świnoujście and Szczecin to southern Poland and the Czech Republic
the route will extend all the way to Prague
forming a vital link between Poland and its southern neighbour

had announced that work on the 21 km section of road was due to begin on 19 December and should be completed by 2027
within 18 months Budimex will have to hand over a 3 km section connecting the Polish border town of Lubawka with the existing national road in the Czech Republic
the D11 highway will run from the border to Prague
But the Czechs still also need to build a section of the road between Trutnov and the town of Jaromer
including completed sections in (green line) and planned sections (dotted black line)
Kupka said that Poland’s successful expansion of its road network in recent years is an “inspiration” for the Czechs
He noted how it had “visibly contributed to and stimulated other types of economic activity
as well as improving quality of life for people in Poland”
added that the firm’s “Polish experience allows us to feel confident…about our expansion into the Czech market”
which has been preceded by two years of preparatory work
The Polish firm has ambitious plans in the Czech Republic
It has also submitted a bid for a tender to work on a section of the D35 motorway in a project worth around 3.5 billion koruna

What will be Poland’s longest non-urban tunnel
It will form part of the 480-kilometre S3 expressway connecting Poland’s northwestern Baltic coast with the Czech Republic in the south
is one of two key elements to be built along the S3 between Bolków and Kamienna Góra
The TS-26 tunnel will be approximately 2,300 metres long
while the shorter TS-32 is estimated at 320 metres
“The contractor has exceeded 50% advancement of boring,” said the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) in a press release on Wednesday
The GDDKiA said that the two tunnels constituted the most important element of the S3 roadworks
with an estimated cost of 1.5 billion zloty (€336 million)
is being led by PORR SA of Warsaw partnered with PORR Bau GmbH of Vienna
The entire S3 expressway from Bolków to Lubawka is estimated to cost almost 2.5 billion zloty and is being co-financed by the European Union
PORR confirmed in a statement that the 2,300-metre tunnel would be the longest non-urban tunnel drilled through rock in Poland
The tunnel will make it possible to cut through the Kaczawskie and Wałbrzyskie Mountains on the S3
The full road will run from Świnoujscie on the Baltic Sea
down to the border with the Czech Republic

The longer TS-26 tunnel will be made up of two main aisles for traffic
with two lanes each – the left (east) one will be 2,301.88 metres long and the right (west) will be 2,272.20 metres long
These have been 52.7% and 50.1% completed respectively as of 23 August
That puts the tempo of boring of both aisles at 252 running metres per month
with the tunnel’s construction set to be completed in the first half of 2022
The entire tunnel project will be completed by the second quarter of 2023
The longer tunnel is being built using the New Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) of sequential excavation
which is better suited to the large cross-section of the tunnel and its length
There will also be eight transverse evacuation passages and one emergency passage in the middle of the tunnel

Getting from Prague to Poland could become a lot faster in the future
The Czech Railway Administration (SŽ) is planning a 350 km/h high-speed train route to the neighboring country
This will be the fourth of five planned high-speed lines that have entered the feasibility study phase
The first section of the route to Poland would run parallel to the D11 motorway from Prague to Hradec Králové
six options to the reach the Polish border are being evaluated
The Railway Administration (SŽ) announced earlier this month that it was holding a competition to find a contractor to prepare a CZK 20 million feasibility study for the route from Prague to Hradec Králové to Wrocław
The study will evaluate the project’s economic impact and propose the most suitable routes
Six options for the section of the route from Hradec Králové to Wrocław will be evaluated
There are three places where the rail line can enter Poland
SŽ spokeswoman Radka Pistoriusová told daily Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD) that the route would have to reach Poland at one of three border points: Královec / Lubawka
Meziměstí / Mieroszów or Petříkovice / Okrzeszyn
Two of the six route options will follow existing railway lines
The first links Hradec Králové to the Polish border at Královec and the second crosses the Polish border at Meziměstí
the Railway Administration counts on modernizing parts of the existing route so that trains can reach 250 km/h
The other four options consider completely new routes crossing into Poland at Petříkovice or near Královec
These routes will be considered for either passenger-only service or mixed passenger and freight service
The portion of the high-speed route between Prague and Hradec Králové is more clear
where a high-speed rail pilot project is already planned
SŽ’s Pistoriusová told MfD the feasibility study would take 18 months
and then territorial development principles in the individual regions would need to be updated
The route construction should begin in 2025 with a pilot section between Prague and Poříčany in the Kolín district
Subsequent construction on the section between Hradec Králové and Poland is expected around 2040
the basic network of five high-speed lines will cost about CZK 650 billion
The costs of other planned high-speed rail lines
have risen dramatically after feasibility studies were conducted
the Railway Administration is not commenting on the estimated cost of the Prague to Poland route until it has more information
Czech Railways (ČD) since 2005 has had high-speed routes using Italian-made Pendolino trains
but these only reach a top speed of 237 km/h using existing tracks
Critics say that the trains really shouldn’t be billed as high-speed because they lack dedicated tracks and the speeds aren’t comparable to other services
Pendolinos currently operate on a route between Františkovy Lázně and Bohumín in the Czech Republic and then on to Košice
