Nowy Sacz Historical and Exploratory AssociationExperts found 103 silver items in total
the Nazis took hold of Nowy Sacz Royal Castle in Poland and turned it into a barracks and ammunition depot
it is clear that more than weapons were stored here
According to Fox News
researchers have unearthed a literal treasure chest full of silver at the 14th-century fortress
The find comes nearly 80 years to the month of Germany’s occupation there
during which time the surrounding town of 20,000 Polish Jews was transformed into a ghetto
The find was made by Stanislaw Pustułka of the Nowy Sacz Historical and Exploratory Association while he was examining the property for artifacts just like this
Nowy Sacz Historical and Exploratory AssociationNowy Sacz was blown up by Polish soldiers a few years later
Only the outer walls and a reconstructed keep remain
The research team found a total of 103 silver objects that included homewares like goblets and cutlery
The Nowy Sacz Historical and Exploratory Association currently believes that these items were produced in Austria or Poland
probably from the turn of the 19th or 20th century
connected to Jewish ritual and was probably buried during World War Two,” said local archaeologist Bartlomiej Urbański
But questions around the treasure’s origins linger
“Is it connected with the buildings that used to be in this part of the city
who were then unable to take it away?”
Nowy Sacz Historical and Exploratory AssociationIt is still unclear whether or not these items were stolen from Poland or transported to the castle from Austria
Nowy Sacz Royal Castle was blown up by Polish soldiers in 1945
but not before all 20,000 Jews trapped in the ghetto were sent to the Belzec concentration camp
only the castle’s outer walls and a reconstructed keep remain
Nowy Sacz Historical and Exploratory AssociationThe recovered items will be put on display at the local Regional Museum
archaeologists will continue to dig on site and catalog their finds
These will be displayed in the local Regional Museum
This isn’t the first such discovery on the castle grounds
archaeologists uncovered 50 dinar coins from the 15th century about 65 feet from the silver-filled treasure chest
And recently, experts found the 75-year-old diary of an SS Officer which revealed that 28 tons of Nazi gold were stashed somewhere in Poland
The journal listed 10 other locations across Germany and the Czech Republic where such stolen treasures might remain hidden to this day
Next up, read about how $130 million in Nazi gold were found in a sunken German cargo ship. Then, learn about the Forrest Fenn Treasure worth millions that people have died looking for

Nowy Sącz has the EU’s second-most-polluted air
with two other Polish cities also featuring among the worst ten in the European Environmental Agency’s (EEA) latest ranking of urban air quality
Poland as a whole also has the highest annual number of deaths linked to air pollution
Poland’s results are better than three years ago
with Polish cities showing a reduction in air pollution
The ranking looks at the level of fine particulate matter – the type of air pollutant that has the highest impact on health in terms of premature death and disease – in 372 EU cities across the years 2022 and 2023
The most polluted city was Slavonski Brod in Croatia
That made it the only place in the EU with air classified as “very poor” by the EEA
It was followed in second place by Nowy Sącz (24.0 µg/m3). Częstochowa (21.9 µg/m3) and Żory (21.8 µg/m3) occupy ninth and tenth place respectively. All three cities are located in the south of Poland, where air quality is notoriously bad
Among the remainder of the ten most polluted cities
22.2 µg/m3) while one is in Greece (Ioannina
The latest ranking, however, shows an improvement for Poland compared to three years ago, when five Polish cities were among the ten most polluted in the EU
Pollutant levels in individual cities have also fallen: from 27.3 µg/m3 to 24.0 µg/m3 in Nowy Sącz and from 24.9 µg/m3 to 21.8 µg/m3 in Żory
was among the EU’s ten most polluted
The @WorldBank is lending a further €250 million to finance Poland's “Clean Air” programme
It aims to tackle some of the worst air pollution in Europe by providing subsidies for households to install cleaner heating systems and improve insulation https://t.co/zTzjn2tRRY
— Notes from Poland 🇵🇱 (@notesfrompoland) April 22, 2024
Poland still has the EU’s highest number of premature deaths linked to air pollution
show that 47,300 deaths in Poland were attributable to PM2.5
a type of air pollutant that is deemed the most harmful to human health
That was a higher figure than in any other country
In terms of years of life lost per 100,000 inhabitants due to PM2.5 – a measure that takes account of population size – Poland’s figure of 1,372 was second only to Bulgaria (1,443) among EU countries

The Polish town of Nowy Sącz has installed a new monument listing the names of 12,000 of its Jews who were killed in the Holocaust
an unveiling ceremony took place in the presence of almost 100 descendants of Nowy Sącz Jews from around the world
The event took place on the 80th anniversary of the last transport of Jews from the town’s ghetto to the Nazi German death camp of Bełżec
“Nobody survived this journey,” said Łukasz Połomski from Sądecki Sztetl
a group that commemorates the area’s Jewish history
It was Połomski and a team of 20 volunteers in Poland and abroad who researched the names of the 12,000 Holocaust victims that are now inscribed around the walls of the memorial
all of which were read out during Sunday’s ceremony
“I stand [with] 12,000 of my brothers and sisters
among them dozens of people from my family
whose blood screams but their voices will not be heard.”
She noted that among the names is “my beloved aunt Hinda Goldberg
who lived around the corner” from where the ceremony was taking place
Melzer thanked Nowy Sącz for “writing a beautiful chapter in the Jewish history of Central and Eastern Europe and being an example for others”
Polish town commemorates lost Jews with new memorial
declared that Sunday’s event showed that “the evil which appeared on our soil 80 years ago has not won”
both Poland and Nowy Sącz were “multinational
Today “we remember that they were our brothers
today we show that memory and good prevails”
a march of remembrance was also held in the town to commemorate its lost Jews
The area on which the new memorial is located has been named Square of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust
A driving force behind the memorial was the “People, not numbers” project run by a Polish Olympic athlete
which seeks to search for and commemorate Holocaust victims in the southern Małopolska province in which Nowy Sącz is located
“Each of us deserves a dignified memory,” Popiela told PAP
“Which is why it is so important for us to list each victim individually by name.” His organisation raised 23,400 zloty (€4,950) in a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for the monument
Research into the names of Nowy Sącz’s victims was carried out at institutions including Israel’s Yad Vashem and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
as well as the archives of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance and Jewish Historical Institute
Repairing the world: The Olympic athlete restoring Poland’s Jewish heritage
Jews probably first appeared in Nowy Sącz in the 15th century
though there was no settled presence until the 17th century
according to Jewish history website Virtual Shtetl
at that time they also met with resistance from some local residents
which made up around one third of the town’s population
It had also become renowned as a centre of Hasidism
That was brought to a sudden and tragic end by the Nazi German occupation
during which Jews from Nowy Sącz and surrounding areas were first forced into a ghetto and then deported in their thousands to the gas chambers of Bełżec
Very few of the town’s Jews survived the Holocaust
The last members of Nowy Sącz’s Jewish community emigrated in 1968-69
at a time when thousands of Jews left Poland amid an “anti-Zionist” campaign led by the communist authorities

a city of 83,000 people in southern Poland
has appealed to residents to stay indoors amid sightings of a bear wandering through the streets this morning
Municipal police patrols have been deployed to search for the animal
“I was driving to work and at around 7 a.m
I saw a bear in front of my car,” one eyewitness told local news service Sądeczanin
“You could tell that he was still young
he was standing in the middle of the road…By the time I took my phone out of my bag
the bear had already gone into the bushes.”
some residents were able to capture the animal on camera before it disappeared
posted one such image (seen above) to social media alongside a warning to locals
especially residents of the Chruślice neighbourhood
to stay at home until the situation is resolved,” Handzel wrote
we are implementing the appropriate procedures
The head of the city’s municipal police (straż miejska) confirmed to the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that they are patrolling the area for the creature and that the local forest service and the Polish Hunting Association have been notified of the situation
A crisis team has also been set up and various plans of action have been established
“The bear can be a threat to both residents and vehicles,” he told PAP
“If it appears again in a residential area
various scenarios are taken into consideration: scare it away or tranquilise it and transport it deep within the forest.”
the bear has not been seen since early this morning and some experts believe that it has already left the area
“It is probably a bear that was chased away by a dominant male from territories in Slovakia,” Stanisław Michalik
head of the forest inspectorate for the nearby Piwniczna-Zdrój forest
Nowy Sącz is located near the Tatra Mountains
“It may have also been chased out of the forests by wolves or some large
and strayed between buildings,” he added
“All the signs suggest that it is wandering from south to north in search of a suitable place.”
“It is looking for large woodland areas where it will be able to hunt some deer or stag…and it is very unlikely that it will stay in this area
I am sure that by this time [around 10 a.m.] it is already far from the Chruślice neighbourhood.”
The mountain resort town of Zakopane has installed new rubbish bins designed to prevent wild animals
The initiative, a collaboration with Tatra National Park, is intended to protect both animals and humans https://t.co/7PW0SatYxg

Nowy Sącz: A town in Poland becomes the center of a heritage tour
My late father was a Holocaust survivor and I was investigating his life before the Nazi invasion
when the pandemic closed many archives down
But I kept researching online and when Europe started opening up again in the spring
I arranged for us all to visit the Polish town of Nowy Sącz on a virtual tour
Neither my children nor their significant others had ever met my father or knew of his world
my son and daughter-in-law will get married in my father’s tallit
so it felt like an especially good time to share my passion and show them all their links to our past
an expert guide would take us around the town where two Hasidic dynasties were founded (Sanz and Bobov) — and
Scouring genealogical websites and databases I began to find scattered remnants of the Jewish community of Nowy Sącz
I first found a Luks family in Pennsylvania who came from the same shtetl
“Luks” and “Lux” from such a small town — they had to be family
They themselves had found another Luks family in Israel who had been researching their past
It turned out that both the Pennsylvania and Israeli families owned the same family photo
though they could identify different people on it
I had originally thought to take only my nuclear family
And then I invited friends of theirs and mine
Today’s Claim to Fame: Koral’s ice cream factory is now one of the most notable businesses in the Polish town
My father never went back to Poland and never encouraged us to do so
He had lost all his family in the Holocaust — parents and siblings — and
and would religiously read the Yiddish Forward
go to read Yiddish poetry to folks at old age homes
and even perform regularly with the Folksbiene theater company
Being the son of a Holocaust survivor is a defining identity for me
a compulsion to settle his unfinished business
I grew up seeing a lot of numbers tattooed onto arms
hearing adults with European accents and I had almost no blood relatives except on my mother’s side
but all his friends at work were survivors and I would occasionally wake at night to hear him screaming from his dreams
improvised Lux/Luks community headed virtually back to the town in which he was born
once he reached America — would have known it by its Yiddish name of Sanz
Although an entire section of the Jewish neighborhood at the confluence of the Kamienica and Dunajec rivers had been demolished
he would have recognized many of the buildings we visited — from the castle to the Town Hall
On our side of the screen we numbered more than 30 people: the Lux and Luks families
We were all on a Zoom meeting that our guide would join from his iPhone
cold blue Wednesday afternoon in the south of Poland as our guide Christopher Skutela from Virtual Tours & Seminars introduced us to this small town of 80,000 nestled between Krakow and the Slovakian border
young Polish guide with an expertise on the Krakow area
Skutela greeted us enthusiastically from beneath his black beanie
With only one of the 20 or more synagogues remaining (and even that one little used)
there’s now scant trace of the flourishing Jewish community from the early 20th century
but we began in one of them: the Jewish cemetery
Remnants of History: The “new” Jewish cemetery which replaced the old one at the end of the 19th century contains a few original gravestones there from the last century
Locals say that the Nazis took many of the stones that were there in 1939 and used them to build
Sanz-Klausenberg Hasidim and others have erected a modest but pristine building around the nominal grave of Rabbi Chaim Halberstam
Although this was the “new” Jewish cemetery which replaced the old one at the end of the 19th century
there are few original gravestones there from the last century
while almost none of the Sanzers who survived
it makes for a good starting point for a Jewish tour
lived in the early 19th century and his grandson
was among those went to Bobowa where he founded the Bobov dynasty
Yet other Halberstams remained in Sanz until they fled for Israel and America
My father would attend meetings of the Sanzer Society in Manhattan when the current Rabbi Halberstam attended
He also volunteered to manage the Sanzer Society burial section at New Montefiore Cemetery on Long Island — assigning graves when survivors and their spouses died
I wanted to see where my father had grown up and I had given the guide his address
From the grassy cemetery we could see the bridges over the smaller
Kamienica River that my father fished in as a boy
Skutela flipped between selfie mode on the camera as he explained some of the context and face-forward mode as he walked us out of the gates
past the commemorative plaques — including the one for Jakob Muller
who had returned to Sanz from his safe haven in Sweden to care for the cemetery until he died in 2010
Skutela showed us the view looking down to where the rivers meet just behind Koral’s ice cream factory which is the town’s current claim to national fame
Along with a more central area further up the hill
this had been one of the main Jewish areas in the early 20th century
the Nazis forced the Jews into a ghetto away from the river and partially destroyed the lower neighborhood
the streets were completely demolished before sometime in the ‘90s
This river junction was the reason for the foundation of the town and Nowy Sącz’s royal castle still stands on a hill looking down at it
Two roads now run across each river and met at right angles below the castle
with only Koral and its parking lot between the highway and the river
the Jewish quarter with its two main streets
sat wedged in between the river and the protection of the local nobility
It was on Rzemieslnicza that my father had reached his teen years
The lack of anything more evocative than an anachronistic factory felt absurd and yet being here with my brothers and my children and my friends new and old
We moved up the town away from the rivers passing the castle
was officially deeded back to the Jewish community in absentia
the town square and the streets where the Nazis formed the ghetto from which Jews were sent to the Bełżec extermination camp in late August 1942
My father had already left the town before the Nazis occupied it in early September 1941
fleeing for the supposed safety of the Soviet Union
The townsfolk were just beginning to emerge from COVID-19 lockdown and they seemed completely unfazed to hear a guide walking through the town
talking in English to a forward-facing iPhone
to hear Skutela’s smattering of Hebrew and Yiddish words uttered with perfect Hasidic pronunciation
Soon we reached the end of Jewish Nowy Sącz and
Skutela said goodbye and promised to connect me to the latest Rabbi Halberstam
but recently I have become increasingly drawn to the things that made him — his Orthodox Jewish roots
I didn’t think I’d find the key to who he was
or the compulsions that were pulling on me
I hadn’t reckoned on finding my father’s childhood home turned into one of Poland’s biggest ice cream factories but
I was delighted to have taken my family — new and old — back to Sanz
This particular virtual trip to his past was over
but my journey to find my father is well underway

Nowy Sącz has the European Union’s worst air, according to new data released by the European Environmental Agency (EEA)
A further four Polish cities are among the ten most polluted in the ranking of 323 places across the bloc
Poland has long battled with some of the continent’s most polluted air
which is estimated to cause around 50,000 premature deaths in the country annually
was found by the EEA to have an annual mean concentration of 27.3 μg/m3 of PM2.5 (referring to small and particularly harmful airborne particulate matter) in 2019 and 2020
The World Health Organisation recommends a limit of 10 μg/m3
— Compassion 🇪🇺 (@gmulder) June 17, 2021
That made Nowy Sącz one of only five EU cities to receive the worst rating of “very poor” air
Another was Zgierz (25.2μg/m3) in central Poland
Also in the bottom ten were Piotrków Trybunalski, Żory (both 24.9 μg/m3) and Kraków (24.7 μg/m3)
as well as the major cities of Łódź (18.2 μg/m3)
Wrocław (16.2 μg/m3) and Poznań (17.2 μg/m3) were also classified as having “poor” air
The non-Polish cities in the bottom ten were Cremona
Umeå in Sweden had the EU’s cleanest air
followed by Tampere in Finland and Funchal in Portugal
Poland has EU’s worst air pollution, shows new report
“Fine particulate matter is the air pollutant with the highest impact on health in terms of premature death and disease,” notes the EEA
“Long term exposure…caus[es] serious health effects.”
A study last year found that children in one Polish city had over four times the level of harmful substances from air pollution in their bodies as their counterparts in France
Over the last decade, there has been a growing campaign in Poland
for the authorities – as well as the public themselves – to take steps to mitigate air pollution
Dangerous levels of air pollution in Polish children’s bodies, finds study
The biggest contributor to the problem is home heating, with many Poles burning coal – and sometimes, illegally, household waste – in domestic stoves. In 2019, Kraków became the first city in the country to ban the burning of wood and coal
The city also launched an app that allows residents to not only monitor air quality but also to send the authorities geotagged photographs of buildings where they suspect illegal burning
Some municipalities in Poland have used drones to monitor smoke coming from chimneys
Pioneering anti-smog measures improve air in one of Poland’s most polluted cities

but their manager Radoslaw Mroczkowski was outspoken in his disagreement with the move
“It’s a joke,” Mroczkowski told Polish website Sportowefakty.pl
I asked the sporting director [Arkadiusz Alexander] why he did not tell me anything [about Adu]
he sent me a text message that there ‘will be a player on trial’ and that they all knew
Only the coach did not know who the trialist was.”
Adu was most recently on trial with Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer earlier this year
He has not played a professional match since he was released by NASL side Tampa Bay Rowdies at the end of 2016
What is the point of having such a player?” Mroczkowski added: “The CEO says that it’s marketing
We may as well have Janusz Chomontek [a Polish football freestyler].”

Polish infrastructure operator PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PLK) has appointed a Polish-Turkish consortium to build Poland’s longest railway tunnel as part of a project to modernise a stretch of railway
PKP PLK has selected a consortium comprising Polish contractor Budimex and Turkish infrastructure firm Gülermak to deliver the project
the consortium will the modernise the fourth section of the 104 railway line between Chabówka and the village of Nowy Sącz in the Małopolska province
The works is being carried out as part of the PLN1.9bn (£382M) Podłęże - Piekiełko project - one of the largest infrastructure projects in southern Poland
The upgrades to the railway will involve modernising and electrifying a 12.5km long stretch of track between Limanowa and Klęczany
and building new train stops at Mordarka and Chomranice
It will also involve excavating a new tunnel to take trains underground through part of the Western Beskids mountains
The almost 3.8km long tunnel will run between the towns of Męcina and Mordarka
The tunnel and upgraded railway infrastructure will reduce travel times between Krakow
“This is great news for everyone who wants to travel between these two cities and sees their chance in rail transport,” said Poland’s minister of infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak
The project will also include the construction of 10 viaducts and 12 bridges
Rail and road crossings will be replaced with grade-separated intersections
Modernisation of the railway tracks will mean that passenger trains will be able to run at speeds of up to 160km/h and freight trains at 100km/h
Construction works are currently underway on three sections of railway line between Klęczany and Nowy Sącz
PKP PLK is also conducting a tender procedure for the reconstruction of Limanowa station as part of the project
“The implementation of this project will increase the competitiveness of the railways and contribute to the economic development of the region,” said PKP PLK’s acting president of the management board

A contract has been signed to build what will be Poland’s longest tunnel
stretching almost 3.8 km (2.4 miles) through part of the Western Beskids mountains in the south of the country
the tunnel and related rail modernisation will cut the train journey time between Kraków
The broader investment programme it is part of
which is financed by the EU’s post-pandemic recovery fund
will also slash travel times between Kraków and the mountain resort town of Zakopane

Poland’s state rail infrastructure firm
announced that it had signed a 1.9 billion zloty (€444 million) contract for modernisation of the section of rail running between Nowy Sącz and the village of Chabówka
both located in the southern province of Małopolska that is centred around Kraków
The section of track will include the new tunnel, which will be the longest single transport tunnel of any kind – road or rail – in the country
The work will be carried out by a consortium comprised of Budimex
which specialises in rail transport infrastructure
will upgrade infrastructure built almost 150 years ago
said deputy infrastructure minister Piotr Malepszak
He added that it would cut travel times from Kraków to Nowy Sącz from around three hours to just one
the fastest train connections between the two stand at around 2 hours and 40 minutes
with Malepszak noting that trains often travel at speeds of up to 60km/h (37mph)
speeds will increase to up to a maximum of 160km/h (99mph)
Poland’s rail network is expanding and modernising
However, more needs to be done to integrate it with other elements of the transport system, writes @MarcinZyla https://t.co/I3AnCXgBsh

The improvements between Nowy Sącz and Chabówka are part of a broader programme to improve rail infrastructure in the region
including a new line connecting Kraków with the Podhale and Sądecczyzna regions that lie along the mountainous border with Slovakia
will cut train journey times between Kraków and Zakopane to 90 minutes
the fastest connection is around 2 hours and 20 minutes
The plans also encompass improvements to station infrastructure, including creating platforms that will be fully accessible to people with reduced mobility
Less than 6% of train stations in Poland are fully adapted to the needs of disabled people

The investment is being carried out as part of Poland’s so-called National Reconstruction Plan (KPO)
which is the name given to the billions of euros in spending financed by the EU’s post-pandemic recovery fund
Those funds were previously frozen by the European Commission due to concerns over the rule of law under Poland’s former Law and Justice (PiS) government. However, following the arrival of a new ruling coalition led by Donald Tusk, Brussels announced last month that it would unlock all of Poland’s funds
Last year, head of the EU’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport declared that Poland’s plans to develop its rail network could see it surpass many western European countries within the next two decades
Poland’s rail network may be better than western Europe's within 20 years and could be the most modern on the continent
He also notes Poland will play a key role in integrating Ukraine into the EU's transport system https://t.co/LyWIy7whd4

A new holiday has been approved in Poland remembering the Jews that were taken to the death camps in Nazi Germany during World War II
According to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki,”helping Jews at that time was one of the most glorious pages of Polish history.”
the dishonor of the Nazi Party of World War II still hangs heavy in the air
the flag of the Third Reich is not allowed to be displayed anywhere
Even Hollywood has to get special permission when shooting films on site to fly the Nazi flag
They are required to post signs near the site warning the citizens of the use of the Nazi flag
Unless one is in a history venue talk about those years is hushed and frowned upon
Participants who are now in their 90s are still being prosecuted
passed a Holocaust bill that requires fines or a maximum three-year jail term for anyone who refers to Nazi death camps as Polish or accuses Poland of collusion in exterminating Jews
Israel has taken umbrage with the bill and prefers that anyone who denies Nazi collaboration would be subject to arrest and a jail sentence
The Polish bill was passed with a vote of fifty-seven to twenty-three
but Israeli lawmakers are still reacting unfavorably
The first celebration of the Poles who stood up to the rules of the Third Reich was held in the village of Markowa
allowed a Jewish family to hide in their home
Ulma was an educated and prominent man in Markowa
a bee and silkworm keeper and fruit grower who was also a photography enthusiast
the Ulma family reached out to the family of six as well as two daughters of another family
The Jewish guests did all they could to help out on the farm
for approximately two years they stayed there
a knock at the door of the Ulma’s home started the beginning of the end
Someone had turned the Ulmas into the German authorities
who was in labor with the couple’s seventh child
and their children along with the Jews they were hiding were marched out into the street
In order to make an example of Nazi power
the neighbors were rounded up and forced to watch as the Jews were shot in the head
who by then was in the process of giving birth
cowering in terror at the sight of their parents’ dead bodies were shot within minutes
As German policeman Josef Kokottmurdered the children he remarked,“Look at how Polish swine that hide Jews die”
The Germans then told the neighbors and the village mayor to bury the bodies
Several days later some of the townspeople defied the Germans by going out at night to exhume the family’s bodies and give them a proper Catholic burial in caskets
The man who gently laid Wiktoria in her casket reported that the Polish mother’s baby had made it through the birth canal almost to its tiny waist
the family was reburied in the Parish cemetery
Józef and Wiktoria were posthumously awarded the Righteous Among the Nations Medal in 1995
and the Catholic church is currently considering the family for beatification as martyrs
They are facing the problem of the unborn child as it was not yet named or baptized but the Vatican will ultimately make that decision
A memorial museum was opened in Markowaon March 17
to honor the Ulnas as well as the other Poles who assisted the many Jews trying to escape extermination in occupied Poland

FREDDY Adu's disastrous career has hit a new low..
with the one-time child prodigy set to sign for a club in the Polish second division
Adu was dubbed the 'new Pele' when he turned professional at the age of 14 but his career fizzled out before it ever got going
He failed to land a contract last month after a trial with the Portland Timbers and is now weighing up an offer from minnows Sandecja Nowy Sacz from the Polish second division
Reports from Poland claim he is due to undergo a medical this week and will sign for the club once that has been completed
The side play their home gamea st the Father Wladyslaw Augustynka stadium
They are currently seventh in the Polish second division
However football website Goal.com claim the former USA international is also considering an offer from an unspecified club in Asia.
Adu began his professional career at age 14 with MLS side DC United, and was immediately hailed as the first superstar of football in America.
MLS marketing men dubbed him the 'new Pele' and for a while it seemed he would justify the hype, winnning his first cap at the age of 16 years in January 2006.
In November that year Adu had a trial with Manchester United for a fortnight, but he was not able to gain a work permit and so could not play in any competitive games.
However it turned sour quickly for the young midfielder.
then joined Benfica in 2007 for just £1.5million
Since then he has been around the block several times, at Monaco
Serbian club FK Jagodina and Kuopion Pallosuera in Finland among others
Everything that I’ve been through and everything that hurt my career
I brought it on myself because I didn’t dedicate enough time to it
He signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL in 2015, but after a promising first season with the club, Adu was left on the bench in favour of former Chelsea and England star Joe Cole for the 2016 season
He left the Rowdies having just played 13 league matches for the club
Adu spent a few weeks on trial with the Portland Timbers at the end of January
but didn't do enough to earn a contract
Adu admitted in an interview with Goal.com a year ago that he has no one but himself to blame for failing to fulfil the potential he showed
"I’ve had some tough times in my career
I’ve had some great times as well," he said
It wasn’t my choice or decision to be compared to Pele when I came into the league
"Everything that I’ve been through and everything that hurt my career
I had a lot too early,’ or say whatever you want
"But at the end of the day we all need to grow up at some point
"I’ve looked back on these past few years and I’ve wasted a lot of time
just not dedicating the time I should have to the sport
I started so early that time wasted doesn’t mean I’m 33 or 34 and it’s too late for me
"I’m only 26 and I can change and correct the things I’ve done wrong
and that’s what I’m focused on right now."
