Healthcare has always been and will always be a priority for the Government. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the Healthcare Facility Complex in Ostrów Wielkopolski. Thanks to a Government subsidy, the establishment was able to open a Genetics Laboratory at the Department of Laboratory Diagnostics.
“We are fully aware that healthcare is one sphere of our lives which requires significant resources and much attention, and we are trying to meet these requirements,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
“For several years, we have also been putting a particular emphasis on educating new physicians. Today, I am proud to say that we have 20 thousand more physicians.”
The number of students taking courses in medicine as well as medicine and dentistry has been systematically increasing. Compared to 2015, said number has increased by 28 percent. The number of physicians and nurses has also increased. Compared to 2015, the number of physicians and dentists has increased by 11 percent. At the end of 2015, there were over 221 thousand nurses and fewer than 26 thousand midwives; at the end of 2021, we had 234 thousand nurses and nearly 29 thousand midwives.
The Government will allocate PLN 2 billion from the Medical Fund towards modernisation of children’s hospitals. The funds can be used to build, modernise or purchase new equipment for hospitals.
“May there be as many such modern establishments in Poland as possible,” said the Prime Minister. Currently, applications submitted under the competition are being reviewed. Maximum grant for a single project is PLN 300 million.
Their cities are separated by 7,000 miles and unique cultures and languages but, at a recent get-together, the mayors of Brantford and Ostrow Wielkopolski found they have as much in common as they do differences.
Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis recently took a three-day detour, at his own expense, while on a personal trip to Europe to visit Ostrow Wiekopolski, a city of about 85,000 in west-central Poland.
Brantford and Ostrow Wiekopolski became sister cities when they were “twinned” 16 years ago.
A sister city or a twin town relationship is a form of legal or social agreement between two geographically and politically distinct areas for the purpose of promoting cultural and commercial ties. The modern concept of town twinning became popular after the Second World War.
Davis was met by Ostrow Wiekopolski Mayor Beata Klimek and a contingent of city officials who gave him a tour their historic old town, some of their significant buildings, and a crash course in Poland’s municipal politics.
“They were magnificent hosts,” said Davis. “It was a great opportunity to rekindle our relationship.”
The then-mayor of Ostrow Wiekopolski visited Brantford 15 years ago.
While Brantford’s mayor is a member of council, that’s not the case in Poland where Davis said there is a “super strong mayor system” with absolute power over administration. Brantford council has 11 members, while Ostrow Wiekopolski has 25.
Davis said he and Klimek spent a lot of time talking about their cities’ very different growth rates. While Brantford is booming and, earlier this year, led Ontario cities with the highest percentage of housing starts, Ostrow Wiekopolski is facing depopulation.
“They questioned me about immigration in Canada,” said Davis. “They don’t have the same level of immigration there, coupled with declining birth rates. There are lots of vacant apartment buildings. Building new housing isn’t as urgent for them.”
While Brantford considers the potential for constructing a new arena, its Polish sister city recently built a new facility, which Davis toured, which houses handball and basketball courts.
Ostrow Wiekopolski also has a new performing arts centre, said Davis, similar to what’s being planned in Brantford through a partnership between the city and Wilfrid Laurier University.
Davis said the mayors also discussed their cities’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions, with both working to convert their public bus fleet from diesel to electric.
“All in all, everyone was extremely friendly and very proud of their history,” said Davis, adding that he invited Klimek to visit Brantford if she is re-elected in the spring.
Brantford is also twinned with Kamianets-Podilskyi, its sister city in Ukraine. They joined together in 2022 in an effort to provide war-ravaged Ukraine a “symbolic hand of friendship” and practical support.
Davis said the city is looking into what is most needed in Kamianets-Podilskyi, which has taken in about 25,000 refugees as Russia’s war in Ukraine rages on. He said children are having difficulty adapting and aid could include packages especially for children or a summer camp exchange program.
