not owning your own place can sometimes be a barrier to going solar
You might need to get your landlord’s approval or you may not want to invest thousands of dollars in a clean energy system that you can’t take with you when you move a few years down the line
That’s why plug-in battery storage is a great option if you don’t own a home or a condo
Plug-in batteries offer you flexibility at a lower price point while still providing you resilience
All you have to do is plug your battery into the wall – and you’re ready to go
Plug-in home batteries are worth considering right now: as an aging electric grid and more frequent natural disasters make for less reliable electricity, households are increasingly installing batteries to provide backup power
Interest in and sales of residential battery storage solutions spiked in 2024
with homeowners and contractors alike citing concerns about resilience as a key factor
But the high costs and installation timelines can sometimes feel discouraging for renters. That's why San Francisco-based Pila Energy decided to create a new plug-in battery with mesh network technology
wanted to build a product that would allow renters to protect themselves from increasing electric rates and extreme weather events the same way homeowners can

a veteran of solar company SPAN and Tesla’s Powerwall team
told EnergySage that while his company’s product is designed for homeowners and renters alike
he is especially attuned to the backup power needs of renters because of his own experience renting in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina
Battery storage that isn’t physically attached to your house for two decades is just more practical and cheaper overall
“About half the cost of getting a battery today is the install cost,” said Ashman
plug-in batteries meet renters’ needs because they do not require a landlord’s participation and they’re easier to move
You can take it with you when you move,” he said
Pila is entering a growing market that includes competitors like BioLite Backup and Blip Energy. Like traditional battery storage setups, plug-in battery systems with at least 3 kWh of storage capacity are currently eligible for a 30% federal tax credit
this feature allows multiple batteries across a household or building to connect and communicate with one another
In addition to making it easier to expand storage
the mesh technology allows batteries to automatically optimize energy usage and to prioritize and time their recharging
if a household has decided its top priority is to keep its refrigerator running on stored power
the battery connected to the fridge will be first in line to recharge when electricity rates are at their lowest
These batteries typically plug directly into a standard outlet
where they can draw power from either the grid or – if the home has them – solar panels
Appliances and electronic devices then plug into the battery to use the energy when needed
It’s a significantly more affordable solution than a traditional hard-wired battery system
enough to power anything as large as a fridge
so consumers will need to either buy two batteries or the expansion pack to qualify for the federal tax credit
Pila is also emphasizing a thin design that does not need to be mounted to a wall
with promotional photos showing the batteries sitting atop a refrigerator or beside a workstation
If you pre-order one of Pila’s home batteries
The batteries are available to order starting Friday March 7 at $999 per unit and require a $99 deposit
The price will rise by $300 when the batteries begin to ship in the second half of 2025

entire neighborhoods sat in darkness for days
resulting in thousands of ruined refrigerators piled up on curbs throughout the city—a stark symbol of the nation’s fragile power system
"I’ll never forget that devastation," Ashman recalls
outages are even more frequent as our aging grid struggles to keep up with the increasing intensity of natural disasters
safe peace of mind within reach for every home and apartment."
As a former SPAN product leader and a Tesla Powerwall engineer
Ashman designed Pila to bring infrastructure-grade energy solutions to everyday homes
"We built Pila at a price point that won’t break the bank while ensuring it has the intelligence to integrate with home energy systems and the power grid."

can back up home appliances without requiring a professional installer
A big home backup battery costs thousands of dollars -- and thousands more to install
A new entrant in the space seeks to bring a smart-home approach without requiring the upfront electrical work of similarly high-tech batteries
Pila Energy, founded by former engineers for home battery leader Tesla and smart electrical panel manufacturer SPAN
unveiled its Pila Mesh Home Battery at South by Southwest 2025
the Pila Energy battery is crafted to blend in nicely with your home's decor -- fitting seamlessly on your TV stand or on top of your refrigerator
The battery is designed to be installed next to the appliances you intend to back up
with an expandable backup unit that can take it to 3.2kWh of electricity.
Pila Energy's founders said the goal was to provide a lower-cost
easier way to back up key home appliances while also offering smart-home-style insights
there are better ways to get people power that don't require plugging in extension cords in the rain and starting up pull-start generators and that also don't need to break the bank and cost you $30,000," founder Cole Ashman told me at SXSW
No electrician neededLike the BioLite batteries I saw at CES 2025
the Pila Energy batteries are intended for home backup but don't actually wire into your home's electrical system
That saves money on installation -- these are essentially plug-and-play -- but that also means they don't feed power back to the grid the way a traditional home battery system does
said homeowners who simply want to back up a few things can get a reliable backup system without paying tens of thousands of dollars to install a home battery
"Apartment-dwellers too -- everybody needs a solution
and this is really the everybody battery," he said
Pila Energy's battery can fit into narrow spaces
Customers can start with one battery and add more to expand their backup capacity
either linking multiple batteries together to provide longer-term power for one appliance
such as a refrigerator or spreading them throughout the home to back up multiple appliances
A portable solar panel can recharge batteries even during an outage
The standard unit can recharge from a 100-watt portable solar panel
These batteries function essentially as portable power stations
Each battery includes four standard AC power outlets and three USB-C ports
and Pila Energy says they should last 10 years
which can connect and coordinate multiple batteries into a mesh system to store power and optimize it for outage protection and more
where multiple modular batteries work together to optimize energy use
"More," in this case, generally means adjusting your energy use to offset the higher costs of time-of-use energy rates
If your electricity costs more during some parts of the day than during other parts of the day
the battery can charge itself when power is cheap and run your appliances off of stored energy when it's expensive.
The batteries include customizable displays
with features like clocks and graphics showing their energy output.
Beyond providing backup power to the refrigerator
the battery can help ensure your fridge is running properly
With a Bluetooth-connected temperature sensor
it can keep an eye on how cold the fridge is
letting you know if you need to consider maintenance or a replacement
The battery is built to work with other smart home ecosystems
such as Amazon's Alexa or Google Home -- although you can also use Pila Energy's app
but we're not forcing people to use it," Ashman said

can you really claim to have seen Girl with a Pearl Earring at all
At that 108-gigapixel resolution, notes Jason Kottke, “each pixel is 1.3 microns in size — 1000 microns is 1 millimeter.” You can learn more about the technology behind the project in this making-of video produced by Hirox Europe
the local branch of the Japanese digital microscope company responsible for both the ten billion-pixel scan and this 108 billion-pixel one
which necessitated 88 hours of non-stop scanning this relatively small canvas of 15 inches by 17.5 inches
a process that resulted in 41,000 3D images
3D images: though Girl with a Pearl Earring
known as “the Mona Lisa of the North,” may be known far and wide in flat representations on pages
Vermeer achieved his ultra-realistic effects not just by putting the right colors in the right places, but applying them at the right thicknesses and with the right textures — all of which have been replicated in a “mega-sized” physical 3D print, 100 times larger than the original work, commissioned by the Mauritshuis for its Who’s that Girl? exhibition

When inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville sang a nursery rhyme into his phonoautogram in 1860
he had no plans to ever play back this recording
the phonoautogram took inputs for the study of sound waves
but could not be turned into an output device
we can hear the voice of Scott in what is now considered the first ever recording of human sound
What you will hear in the above video are the various stages of reconstructing and reverse engineering the voice that sang on that April day in 1860
like wiping away decades of dirt and soot
Scott had looked to the invention of photography and wondered if something similar could be done with sound waves
focused as he was on improving stenography
And so the phonoautogram took in sound vibrations through a diaphragm
which moved a stylus against a rotating cylinder covered in lampblack
What was left was a wiggly line in a concentric circle
Scott’s invention never turned a profit and he went back to bookselling
The invention and some of the paper cylinders went into museums
In 2008, American audio historians discovered the scribbles and turned to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a software called IRENE
The software was designed to extract sounds from wax cylinders without touching the delicate surfaces
and the first pass revealed what they thought at first was a young woman or child singing “Au Clair de la lune,” the French nursery rhyme (not the Debussy piano work)
a further examination of Scott’s notes revealed that the recording was at a much slower speed
and it was a man—most probably Scott—singing the lullaby
The video shows the stages that brought Scott back to life: Denoising a lot of extraneous sound; stretching the recording back to natural time; “tuning and quantizing”–correcting for imperfections in the human-turned cylinder; cleaning up harmonics; and finally adding further harmonics
The result is less an unrecognizable ghost signal and more a touching sound of humanity
desiring somehow to have their voice live on

every aspect of William Shakespeare’s life has produced more speculation than any of us could digest in a lifetime
but also his even more scantily documented personal life
the known facts are these: on November 27th
1582 a marriage license was issued in Worcester to the 18-year-old William Shakespeare and the approximately 26-year-old Anne Hathaway
Six months later came the first of their three children
while Anne — willed only her husband’s “second-best bed” — remained in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon
the couple could not only have remained in communication
but also lived together in the capital for a time
“Hereford Cathedral Library holds a fragmentary seventeenth-century letter addressed to a ‘Mrs Shakspaire,’ concerning her husband’s dealings with a fatherless apprentice,” writes Steggle in his research paper recently published in the journal Shakespeare
“Of the Shakespeares recorded in London
William Shakespeare is the only viable candidate to fit with the letter’s details.” In Steggle’s analysis
it “paints a picture of William and Anne Shakespeare together in London
It further suggests an Anne Shakespeare who is not absent from her husband’s London life
but present and engaged in his financial and social networks.”
The New York Times’ Ephrat Livni quotes Steggle as saying that “this letter
offers a glimpse of the Shakespeares together in London
both involved in social networks and business matters
presenting a united front against importunate requests to help poor orphans.” This
would “lend some heft to feminist readings of Shakespeare’s life,” as well as to the pop-culture trend of “rethinking the marriage and Hathaway’s role in it.” Each era thus continues to create the Shakespeare for whom it feels the need — and the Mrs

It’s hard to believe, but Marvin Gaye’s classic 1967 recording of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” was originally rejected by his record label
Gaye’s version might have been forgotten had it not been included in his 1968 album, In the Groove
“The DJs played it so much off the album,” Gordy said later
Gaye’s recording of the song became a crossover hit
It rose not only to the top of the R&B charts
but also spent seven weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart
It was Motown’s biggest-selling single up to that time
and the In the Groove album name was soon changed to I Heard It Through the Grapevine
as did the backing vocal group The Andantes and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

While you almost certainly know Simon & Garfunkel, you may not know Disturbed, who’ve been steadily popular in the metal world since the release of their debut album The Sickness in 2000. Listen to that album’s big single “Down with the Sickness,” and you’re instantly transported back to the turn of the millennium
when the exaggeratedly rhythmic and aggressive subgenre of “nu metal” reigned supreme
Entertaining though the sheer incongruity of a nu-metal version of “The Sound of Silence” would be, that movement had long since flamed out by 2015, when Disturbed recorded their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s signature song. Instead, they take the haunting austerity of the original in a grandly mournful direction
and the kind of cavernous sensitivity in which metal acts occasionally indulge

If you think the Italians have mastered the craft of making shoes
According to the site Romans Across Europe
the Romans “were the originators of the entire-foot-encasing shoe.” The site continues:
There was a wide variety of shoes and sandals for men and women
Most were constructed like military caligae
with a one-piece upper nailed between layers of the sole
Many had large open-work areas made by cutting or punching circles
Some very dainty women’s and children’s shoes still had thick nailed soles
The image above, which puts all of the Romans’ shoe-making skill on display, comes to us via Reddit and imgur

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Back in the time of the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire
all of Rome’s enemies must have had a plan until pila punched through their shields
A kind of javelin with a wooden shaft and a sharp iron shank
the pilum came in both long and short lengths
Short pila had the advantage of distance
but long pila had the advantage of power
as well as the convenient feature — whether deliberately or accidentally implemented at first — that their shanks would more readily bend after impact
making them impractical to remove from the shields they’d penetrated
With his shield thus made unwieldy by one or more pila, an advancing combatant would thus be forced to discard it entirely — assuming he was still in the condition to do so. As you can see vividly demonstrated in the Smithsonian Channel video above
a pilum landing in the center of a shield could easily skewer anyone standing behind it
History has it that Roman soldiers were also trained to throw their pila where enemy shields overlapped
pinning them together and thus rendering twice as much of their defense useless
pila could be gathered from the battlefield for refurbishment

“Tom Jones and his show might’ve been seen as somewhat ‘square’ by the rockstar standards of CSNY,” writes Dangerous Minds,” but when the foursome agreed to appear in September of that year

Even stranger than this combination is the fact that Young agreed to do it at all
He had become notoriously averse to doing television
even turning down The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and citing his hatred of TV as a reason for leaving Buffalo Springfield two years earlier
Though he may have been caught up in the moment
as his longtime manager Eliot Roberts told biographer Jimmy McDonough: “Neil went
It’s that shit.’ He always used to say ‘that shit.’ Crosby had this weed of doom… Neil never forgave me for that
but in retrospect it was embarrassing.” Young probably shouldn’t have worried
it didn’t seem to hurt his credibility as much as his bewildering (though critically re-appraised) 1982 New Wave record
reinventing himself in the 80s and 90s in good-humored self-parodies
then becoming a bona fide pop star once more
He has yet to appear again with Neil Young

If you happen to go to the Louvre to have a look at Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa
you’ll find that you can’t get especially close to it
That owes in part to the ever-present crowd of cellphone photographers
and more so to the painting’s having been installed behind a wooden barrier and encased in a sturdy-looking glass box
for the single most famous work of art in the world
But there wasn’t always so much security
nor was Mona Lisa always so dearly prized
you could just walk out of the Louvre with it
which visualizes each step of the heist and its aftermath
Why did Peruggia dare to steal the Mona Lisa in broad daylight, an act worthy of Arsène Lupin (himself created just a few years earlier)
having hidden the painting in the false bottom of a trunk nearly all the while
Peruggia cast himself as an Italian patriot attempting to return a piece of cultural patrimony to its homeland
is that he was nothing more than a pawn in a larger scheme masterminded by the forger Eduardo de Valfierno
who planned to make several copies of the missing masterpiece and sell them to credulous American millionaires
whose unrelated possession of statues stolen from the Louvre drew police suspicion.) However the heist occurred
it wouldn’t have happened if its object hadn’t already been widely known
But soon after La Gioconda was returned to her rightful place
she became the face of art itself — and the reason museums do things much differently now than they did in the nineteen-tens

The Pila Energy home battery is a portable
renter-friendly backup-power battery with enough energy storage to power a refrigerator for up to three days
From pv magazine USA
in-home battery for delivering automatic backup power throughout the home was unveiled at SXSW 2025 by Pila Energy
Pila Energy said its Mesh Home Battery provides seamless
integrated backup power for both renters and homeowners
The plug-and-play backup battery automatically powers home appliances and rooms during power outages without requiring the home to be rewired or extension cords to be used
The battery has a modular design and can be installed beside the appliances intended to be backed up
Pila’s founder Cole Ashman, a former Tesla and SPAN engineer
grew up in New Orleans and recalls how entire neighborhoods sat in darkness for days when Hurricane Katrina hit
Ashman says he’s dedicated his career to helping individuals build energy resiliency at home
and centered Pila’s mission around preventing what he witnessed during Hurricane Katrina
“The devastation was unimaginable,” Ashman says in the company’s mission statement
“But one image burned into my memory above all: Thousands of discarded refrigerators piled on curbs across the city.” In Pila’s mission
the company calls the discarded refrigerators that resulted from Katrina a “stark symbol of the nation’s fragile power system.”
outages are even more frequent as our aging grid struggles to keep up with the increasing intensity of natural disasters,” Ashman says
safe peace of mind within reach for every home and apartment.”
(See also: When disaster strikes & The grid’s new secret weapon: Your home)
users can plug in up to 1,200 W of solar and store 3.2 kWh
which is typically enough to power a fridge
charge phones and run laptops for a day or two
the battery’s smart mesh technology can seamlessly connect multiple batteries throughout the home
coordinate them to store solar power and optimize the stored energy for outage protection
The battery can recharge during an outage if it is paired with a plug-in solar panel
Pila said the modular batteries can work together in the background to optimize the home’s energy use
Though the battery cannot provide as much power as a traditional generator system
the battery is a fraction of the cost — starting at $999 — enabling users to provide selective backup power without a relatively high upfront cost
Pila Energy said the battery’s app provides real-time insights into home energy use
24/7 appliance monitoring and alerts to power outages for when the user is away from home
Pila Energy received early-stage funding from Refactor Capital
The Mesh Home Battery’s complete set of specs are available on Pila’s website

Chantston Pila Kekawa was indicted Friday on all five counts
He’s accused of killing 39-year-old Cranston Pia on Feb. 17 with a pistol shot to the head
Pia had armed himself with a rifle to confront a group of hunters trespassing on his Makaha ranch while their dogs harassed his cattle
Pila Kekawa’s attorney opposed the court treating his client as an adult
Pila Kekawa is being held at the juvenile detention facility on $1 million bail
he will be transferred to Oahu Community Correctional Center on his 18th birthday next month to be held with other adults awaiting trial
Pila Kekawa would automatically receive a sentence of life with the possibility of parole
he could be eligible for sentencing as a youthful offender
is a nod to tradition and offers a taste of what’s next

Crime in Hawaii
committed an “execution-style murder” in Makaha and will be tried as an adult
An Oahu grand jury indicted a 17-year-old Maili teen today on murder and firearms violations in connection with the Feb. 17 killing of the 39-year-old owner of Ohikilolo Ranch in Makaha
according to the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney
Chantston Pila Kekawa was indicted for second degree murder
Pila Kekawa allegedly shot and killed Cranston Pia with a single gunshot to his right temple after a fight over Pila Kekawa’s hunting dogs
Pia’s mother told police that her son armed himself with a rifle
and confronted hunters whose dogs attacked cattle on their property
Pila Kekawa’s attorney has said his client shot and killed Pia in self-defense
after Pia fired first at Pila Kekawa and his dogs
Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole
Pila Kekawa resorted to an extreme and horrific act of violence toward the victim
whose property was endangered as a result of Mr
Pila Kekawa’s actions,” Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm said in a statement
“We have taken steps to address this execution-style murder by this defendant by waiving him as a juvenile and charging him in adult court with these serious crimes.”
The court approved a request by prosecutors that Pila be held without bail until trial
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lawrence Sousie presented the prosecution’s case to the grand jury
According to state court documents
Honolulu police officers were sent to the ranch after Cranston Pia’s mother reported “hunters that were pointing a firearm” at her son
Pia was raising a calf and cattle in a pen
where the calf was attacked by a hunting dog
Pia’s mother was calling 911 as the calf was attacked and said she witnessed her son get shot in the head

Text description provided by the architects. Piraeus Tower officially opened its doors to tenants and visitors on the 4th of June in the port city of Piraeus
It is the first green highrise in Greece that throughout the last four years was brought back to life and an architectural icon which marks the starting point of the Athenian Riviera
PILA was the winner of an invited competition to redesign the facade of Piraeus Tower in 2020
now achieving the completion of the most ambitious project of the international architecture practice based in Athens
They are also the designers of all interior common spaces accessible to office visitors and tenants
Piraeus Tower is redeveloped into a contemporary
Soaring 88 metres into the sky and covering a gross built area of 34.623 sqm at a plot of 3.842 sqm
it is a mixed-use building with public open spaces and a contemporary workplace
The first three levels of retail are already leased to Zara
while the third and fourth floors will offer F&B by Nice n’ Easy
The office levels above will host 2.000 people and are occupied by anchor tenants Dialectica
NorthStandard and V Group of Companies among others
The office fit-out for V Group’s headquarters on the 22nd top floor is also designed by PILA studio
As the tallest structure at the port of Piraeus in Attica
its presence dominates the image of the port for five decades
the City of Piraeus with a consortium of investors
transformed the inactive structure into a mixed-use tall building
of which PILA designed its new facade for the ‘rebirth’ of Piraeus Tower
The proposal engages with the multiple scales of experience whereby one perceives the tower: a visual marker on the skyline
© Nikos DaniilidisOn 04 June 2024, Piraeus Tower filled the sky with brilliance
during a night of celebrations when the building was illuminated in the colours of the sky and the sea for the grand opening
The formal inauguration by the Municipality of Piraeus was in the presence of the Prime Minister of Greece
-the implementing entity of the project consisting of DIMAND
the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
and all stakeholders of this ambitious renovation development scheme
The event featured a spectacle from 370 drones
a performance by the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra and fireworks
PILA has designed an elevated walkway that spans from Karaiskaki Square to the park across from the tower
The purpose of this walkway is to improve the urban experience and connectivity around the tower
it features seating areas for enjoying the view and incorporates green spaces for a more pleasant experience
The facade design of ‘Piraeus Tower’ by PILA Architecture Studio has been awarded a 2024 CTBUH Facade Award of Excellence and will be presented at the Barbican Centre in London on the 23rd of September 2024

While most Alpine ski resorts focus on sustainability and scaling back expansion
Pila in Italy is quietly bucking the trend
offering skiers something fresh and exciting
At a time when new pistes across Europe are rare
this hidden gem in the Aosta Valley is leading the way with thoughtful growth and modernisation
new ski slopes and resort expansions have all but disappeared
Resorts like France’s iconic Les Trois Vallées are focusing on improving sustainability by reducing lifts rather than adding more
making operations more efficient and environmentally friendly
have opted for upgrades rather than new terrain
providing easier access to high-altitude runs—but without adding a single new piste
Austria’s Saalbach has stalled its plans to link with Zell-am-See
and Switzerland hasn’t seen a major expansion since Arosa connected with Lenzerheide in 2013
It seems climate concerns and the high costs of development have halted the era of bold Alpine growth
the resort unveiled a new 4.2km red run—Run Number Nine—that descends 560m
The new piste makes the Couis peak far more accessible
offering an alternative to its previously challenging black run
But it’s not just the slopes that are seeing an upgrade
Pila has invested €70 million in a sleek 10-seater gondola
With sweeping views of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn
the gondola ensures skiers spend less time in transit and more time on the slopes
What’s even more exciting is what’s to come
the gondola’s second phase will allow visitors to travel directly from the Roman city of Aosta to Pila’s summit at 2,700m—completely car-free
It’s a game-changer for eco-conscious travellers and those looking to blend culture with adventure
Pila’s expansion hasn’t come at the expense of the environment
Resort president Davide Vuillermoz emphasised the careful planning that went into the new developments
From preserving topsoil to replanting native grass
every detail was considered to minimise the project’s impact
“Our goal is to ensure reliable skiing for decades to come,” Vuillermoz explained
Pila is future-proofing itself against the challenges of climate change
Pila remains one of the best-value resorts in Europe
A six-day lift pass costs just €286—a price that hasn’t increased this year and includes access to nearby Cervinia and Courmayeur
It’s a welcome relief compared to the soaring prices in neighbouring Alpine countries
Pila is proving that thoughtful growth is still possible
and commitment to sustainability make it a standout destination for skiers seeking value
Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a beginner
Pila offers a glimpse into the future of responsible
innovative resort development—showing that progress doesn’t have to come at a cost to the planet

The Danish-founded biotech company Pila Pharma looks to secure a partnership or acquisition within the next few years
The short-term goal is to advance the development of a promising new drug candidate for the treatment of obesity and diabetes
listed on the Nasdaq First North stock exchange in Stockholm
has set a clear strategy for the future: Within a few years
the company aims to be acquired by or partner with an industry player capable of furthering and realizing its research in obesity and other metabolic diseases using TRPV1 inhibitors
The goal is to ensure that Pila Pharma’s potential new weight-loss pill reaches the market as quickly as possible
– We have a promising drug candidate with a completely different side effect profile compared to other treatments currently in development or on the market
Our ambition is to progress the candidate over the next few years and then hand it over to a larger player who can take it to the next level
The global market is in dire need of effective obesity treatments
particularly scalable pill-based solutions
and we believe we could have a role to play in this development
– Since our founders’ discovery in 1999 and the company’s founding in 2014
we have made significant progress and gathered data that suggests we are on the right track
The next major step is to establish proof of concept for weight loss
We are the only company working with this specific type of molecule—TRPV1 inhibitors—as a novel therapeutic approach to treating obesity and other metabolic diseases
I firmly believe we will emerge as a strong and attractive candidate for partnership or acquisition
A Scalable Pill Solution with a Different Side Effect Profile
Pila Pharma was founded by former Novo Nordisk researcher Dorte X
who was the first researcher to identify the molecule that later became semaglutide—the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy
she also discovered— blocking the TRPV1 receptor— could be a potential new mechanism for treating metabolic diseases
Pila Pharma is entering a highly competitive market where unique advantages will determine success
we are focused on generating clinical data on the safety and efficacy of XEN-D0501 for treating obesity and related conditions such as diabetes
and the industry are all seeking effective weight-loss treatments without common side effects such as nausea
If we can achieve this with an oral solution that can be scaled to meet market demand
we envision a future where more patients have better access to sustainable weight management options
– Approximately one-third of patients worldwide who use GLP-1 medications for severe obesity—such as Wegovy—discontinue treatment prematurely due to side effects
If we can offer a scalable pill alternative based on small molecules
it will significantly improve accessibility and help patients adhere to their treatment plans
A Major Opportunity for Pill-Based Obesity Treatments
Professor Jens Juul Holst from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen was among the first to discover the GLP-1 hormone in 1986
which plays a key role in stimulating insulin secretion from the pancreas
GLP-1 receptor agonists are used to treat type 2 diabetes and severe obesity
He sees significant potential for pill-based obesity treatments in certain markets
injection-based treatments pose a challenge
making a pill a far more attractive option
This is particularly true in Asian and African markets
This factor is highly relevant to pharmaceutical companies
many of which avoid investing in injectable drugs due to economic considerations
He also predicts that pricing will play a decisive role in the future:
small-molecule pills are poised to become a major success
One key reason is that they can be sold at a significantly lower price point compared to biologic drugs
The core asset of Pila Pharma is its TRPV1 inhibitor
XEN-D0501 - an orally administered tablet currently in Phase 2 clinical development
the company announced its engagement with regulatory authorities to define the optimal approach for its next clinical trial in obesity and diabetes
Headquartered in Malmö, Pila Pharma is a biotech company specializing in oral treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity. The company is listed at Nasdaq First North GM in Stockholm. www.pilapharma.com
Epicent was founded in 1999 and specializes in press assignments
we have been named among Denmark’s fastest growing companies
Boasting extensive experience in increasing brand awareness
we apply our knowhow and strong editorial networks to ensure optimal execution of PR strategies and multiply clients’ exposure in editorial media

Former Linden Clerk Tessa Sweeney swears in new police officer Colton Pila in May. Standing next to Pila is Linden Police Chief Scott Sutter.
Linden — Linden City Council welcomed Linden’s new police officer during the Monday, July 8 meeting.
Officer Colton Pila began working for the city in mid May. Linden Chief Scott Sutter introduced him to the council on July 8.
Pila worked for the Michigan State Police for six years and for the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office for a few years.
“When I was interviewing everyone around his life and that he worked around, the thing that always stuck out was integrity. Integrity, integrity, integrity. When I interviewed Colton, that came out. that shined. His moral compass is right on the spot and that’s important to me and I think it’s important to Linden,” Sutter said. “I know he’s a great addition to our police force and our community.”

creating a spring pattern that wraps around the building
The pattern appears to gently slide from one facade to another
with the resulting visual effect of the facade wrapping around the tower like an immense piece of fabric
This dynamic pattern appears different from various locations
creating a rich visual experience constantly transforming

The Piraeus Tower is set to become the first LEED Platinum-certified tower in Greece and has also enrolled in the WELL Core™ program to prioritize the health and well-being of its tenants and end-users
It embraces circular economy principles by separating pre-existing glazing and aluminum from other facade elements
sending them to Saint-Gobain in Romania for recycling
and then returning them to Greece for reuse
Each floor is equipped with smart systems (BMS) that allow tenants to operate independently based on their specific needs
The rooftop features 500 square meters of photovoltaic panels
and the building is equipped with the latest cooling and heating systems
The basements provide 44 parking spaces with charging stations
and six water tanks to reuse collected greywater
the Piraeus Tower in Athens is conveniently accessible by all forms of public transportation
enabling occupants and visitors to commute easily and access boats

Located in the heart of the majestic Aosta Valley in north-western Italy, the Italian ski resort of Pila stands as one of the region’s most outstanding and appreciated alpine destinations
With a perfect combination of breathtaking scenery
modern facilities and a rich offer of activities in both winter and summer
Pila (also called Pila Snowland) attracts thousands of visitors every year
offering an unforgettable experience for skiers
Pila is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,800 metres above sea level
surrounded by towering peaks of over three thousand metres
with the highest peak being the colossal Monte Grivola at 3969 metres
The resort is strategically connected to the city of Aosta
by an efficient network of cable car services that provide easy access from the A5 motorway
one of the region’s main thoroughfares
This unique accessibility allows visitors to easily reach Pila from different parts of Italy and Europe
making it an ideal destination for weekend getaways and extended holidays
Pila has more than 50 kilometres of ski slopes
The slopes are mostly in lush forests and the alpine setting offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the Italian Alps
There is a wide variety of red and black runs
This last black piste is especially dedicated to freeriders
as the route is equipped with a conveyor belt protected by a modern plexiglass cover that starts from the Couis 1 arrival station
This system allows you to descend from Platta de Grevon at 2,700 metres to Plan de L’Eyve
The bottom of the new black run will be left in natural conditions during the days following the snowfalls
and then compacted to make it available to a wider clientele
ski lifts and the recently opened Couis 1 cable car
which significantly improves the capacity and comfort of access to the slopes
One of Pila’s most ambitious projects is the addition of the new Couis 1 cable car
This modern system replaces the old two-seater chairlift from the 1980s
With an elevation of up to 2,700 metres above sea level
Couis 1 not only improves access to the slopes
but is also part of a renovation project that includes the creation of a ‘backbone’ for the area
facilitating year-round transport in both winter and summer
a futuristic star-shaped shelter is planned
with a panoramic terrace offering spectacular views of the Aosta Valley
The Fun Park of Pila is an exclusive downhill fun centre
designed for the little ones but equally entertaining for adults: the opportunity to be together without age limits
it is naturally sheltered from the slopes and offers a spectacular panorama when snow tubing downhill
giving the sensation of taking off towards the Mont Blanc mountain range and the Grand Combin looming on the horizon
As the first snowpark created in the Aosta Valley and one of the best in the north-west
having also won the Best Park Nord-Ovest award in 2016
AREAEFFE has established itself as a reference point for riders and non-riders alike
This snowpark has been designed and built with the ideals of fun and the sense of challenge that every snowboarder and freestyle skier has in mind
ensuring that those who practise the discipline or wish to get close to it can do so in a high quality and well cared for environment
AREAEFFE enjoys an enviable natural location
sheltered from the wind by the surrounding copses
providing excellent protection even on less sunny days
the snowpark can be reached from the centre of Aosta in just over 30 minutes
Pila offers a wide range of activities to suit all tastes
cross-country skiing and children’s activities in dedicated areas
the resort transforms into a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers
with numerous trails to explore the breathtaking alpine landscapes
The resort also boasts a first-class infrastructure in terms of accommodation
cosy mountain huts and modern flats ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay
Restaurants and bars offer a varied gastronomic offer
ranging from traditional regional dishes to international cuisine
spas and wellness centres provide places to relax and rejuvenate after an active day in the mountains
Pila stands out for its commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism
The implementation of eco-friendly transport systems
contributes to reducing vehicular traffic and the resort’s carbon footprint
efficient use of resources and protection of the natural environment are priorities throughout the resort’s operations
This sustainable approach not only preserves the natural beauty of the valley
but also ensures that future generations will be able to enjoy this magnificent alpine destination
The Pila resort is not only a destination for mountain lovers
but also a vibrant centre for cultural and sporting events throughout the year
One of the most prominent events is the ‘Valle Aosta Challenge’ Cross-Country Ski Race
which attracts competitors from all over Italy and Europe
runs along some of the most scenic sections of Pila’s slopes
offering both high-level competition and a unique experience for participants and spectators
Pila hosts the Alpine Music Festival ‘Note d’Alpe’
an event that combines concerts by local and international artists with outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking
but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Aosta Valley
integrating traditional music workshops and exhibitions of local instruments
Pila regularly organises art exhibitions in its cultural centre
highlighting works by regional and national artists
A recent example was the ‘Mountains in Art’ exhibition
which featured paintings and sculptures inspired by the alpine landscape
These exhibitions allow visitors to appreciate artistic talent while enjoying their stay in the mountains
Another iconic tradition is the Pila Christmas Market
which transforms the resort into a charming winter village with stalls selling handicrafts
local produce and gastronomic delights typical of the region
This market is a perfect opportunity for locals and tourists to meet
share traditions and enjoy the festive atmosphere
The Pila ski resort has established itself as a benchmark in the Aosta Valley thanks to its combination of modern infrastructure
privileged location and a strong commitment to sustainability and quality tourism
With innovative projects such as the Couis 1 cable car and a wide range of activities
Pila continues to attract visitors from all over the world
