The prison is home to some of the world's most dangerous inmates Normally you have to be a war criminal, gangland executioner, rapist or psychopath to secure a room at Piotrkow prison in Poland. Investigative journalist Paul Connolly is none of the above but he has served time in Europe's most notorious lock-up. After several months of careful negotiation with the Polish authorities, Connolly was allowed to spend five days in the imposing jail. The resulting documentary forms part of the Channel 5 series Inside the World's Toughest Prisons, which will later feature Connolly's visits to Rizal Provincial Jail in the Philippines, El Hongo prison in Mexico and Danli Prison in Honduras. Piotrow was purpose-built in 2003 to house some of the world's most dangerous prisoners. Inside, every space bristles with sophisticated surveillance systems, every prisoner in every wing in every area from low- to high-risk is watched and listened to every hour of the day. Wardens from all over the world visit to study its unique design, which was intended to snuff out violent prison-gang culture by isolating inmates and keeping opportunities for contact to a minimum. "Piotrkow is huge but very claustrophobic," says Connolly. "It is vast but impossible to get lost in. It houses prisoners that other prisons in Europe can't handle. It is almost impossible to break out of, and it tends to break people down." In order to gain the trust of prisoners, Connolly and crew were not always shadowed by guards and, consequently, put themselves at considerable risk. "There was an enormous amount of emphasis placed on trust and goodwill," he says. "If someone had taken a dislike to me and fancied shanking me, there were ample opportunities. I was very vulnerable at many points, but it would have affected the content hugely if I was surrounded by guards." In Honduras and the Philippines, Connolly even stayed with lags in cells overnight. Bizarrely, in these locations the prisons were controlled by the prisoners themselves and Connolly was handed over to gangs by wardens at the perimeter. Inside, prisoners followed rules set by other prisoners and were free to come and go from their cells as they pleased. They could buy what they wanted, smoked drugs openly and even had their wives, girlfriends and children over to spend the night. Connolly explains: "The guards look after all the administrative stuff, the buildings and systems, but inside the prisoners run things. It is bizarre, and a result of lack of government funding. Oddly, it works. A prisoner is far more likely to upset a guard than he is to upset a fellow prisoner. There was no 'us against them' mentality." In Poland, Connolly spent time with a gangland executioner named Marek who had spent eight years of a 14-year sentence in isolation. New subscribers only. £8.99/mo. after free trial. Plan auto-renews until cancelled Connolly decided to experience Piotrkow's most extreme isolation cell. In the plain 6ft by 3ft room his hands and feet were shackled and he was placed in a restrictive helmet that obstructed his jaw and made it hard to talk. He spent less than an hour in the room, but even that had a profound psychological effect. He recalls: "I lost all concept of time. I couldn't separate reality and fantasy. I walked out and, when I turned to do my piece to camera and tried to explain what had happened, I broke down. Every time I tell the story I still well up a little bit. It strips you of your personality." 8,000 of these individuals were refugees mostly from the area of western Poland annexed to the Reich youth groups and political parties continued to operate during which the majority of the population was sent to Treblinka began on 15 October 1942 and lasted for a week as well as the father of Holocaust survivor and Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council Rabbi Israel Meir Lau over 2,000 Jews with work permits remained in the city with the number eventually rising to approximately 4,000 The men were sent to Czestochowa and Buchenwald The smaller Glinice ghetto was named after the suburb in which it was located is displayed in Yad Vashem’s Holocaust History Museum These are the four main Allied nations that defeated Nazi Germany with each nation in charge of a different region with the aim of returning it one day to a single as the country quickly became two starkly different units of communist East and democratic West Germany which would only be reunited over four decades later In the meantime, the majority of Holocaust survivors found themselves homeless, and thus the Allies opened DP (displaced persons) camps to house and rehabilitate them While most of these camps were located in Germany some were even opened in former concentration camps and initially Jews and other displaced persons were housed together meaning some Jews were housed with war criminals social and cultural life flourished in the DP camps Educational institutions opened for the rare surviving children who had missed out on so many years of school as well as for adults striving to learn a vocation Religious life and customs were also quickly reinstated and many marriages and newborns were witness to the survivors' embrace of normal life once again Most of the survivors in the DP camps regarded Germany merely as a stopover in their journey of emigration located in the American Zone of Occupied Germany The date 5 May 1945 goes down in history as Liberation Day for many Holocaust survivors, including those incarcerated at Mauthausen people deemed “asocial” by the Nazi regime The first group of Jews were deported to Mauthausen in 1941 The Jewish prisoners were treated far worse than their non-Jewish counterparts Mauthausen was designed to kill Jews through labor Of the 199,404 individuals who passed through Mauthausen detailing the gruesome acts they were forced to perform On 8 December 1941 murders began at the Chelmno death camp, in which approximately 320,000 people were murdered in gas vans, the majority Jews. Upon the closing of the camp, the 48 remaining Jewish prisoners were slated for murder; all but three, who successfully escaped, were killed. Several of these last prisoners, including Shmul Srebnik which were discovered by the Red Army upon liberation The 9th of Av (Tisha B’Av) is a sad date in the Jewish calendar in which several tragedies befell the Jews the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem This date also marks several major events in the Holocaust; the Nazis were aware of the Jewish calendar and purposely set roundups and other persecutory means on Jewish holidays and commemorative days Two of these notorious actions were the deportations from the Warsaw ghetto to Treblinka which that year was Tisha B’Av; and the liquidation of the Pionki slave labor camp to Auschwitz-Birkenau which according to most sources also took place on Tisha B’Av (that year 29 July 1944) Ten is the number of weeks that the Jewish refugees from fascist and war-torn Romania waited at the Istanbul port aboard the Struma These Jews aimed to reach British Mandatory Palestine via Turkey where they were supposed to obtain entry permits to Palestine did not grant the permits and Turkey only allowed nine of the approximately 780 passengers to disembark In the ten weeks that the passengers waited the already poor conditions on the ship grew dire the Turkish coastguard towed the ship out to sea the ship was sunk by a Soviet submarine torpedo 11 April 1945 marks the date of Buchenwald’s liberation by American troops as well as Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council Rabbi Israel Meir Lau were liberated from the camp on this day Rabbi Lau tells the liberation story of how army chaplain Rabbi Herschel Schacter noticed him behind a pile of corpses Crying from sadness due to the tragedy and happiness from finding a living Jewish child he hugged Lau and asked him how old he was Eight-year-old Lau then replied “I’m older than you.” Smiling and Lau replied “because you laugh and cry like a child The most famous war crimes trials against the Nazis and their collaborators were the Nuremberg Trials Twelve Nazis were sentenced in the first round of trials which took place between 18 October 1945 to 1 October 1946 three were found “not guilty” and the rest were jailed The Yad Vashem website had recently undergone a major upgrade The page you are looking for has apparently been moved We are therefore redirecting you to what we hope will be a useful landing page For any questions/clarifications/problems, please contact: webmaster@yadvashem.org.il '#' : location.hash;window._cf_chl_opt.cOgUQuery = location.search === '' && location.href.slice(0 location.href.length - window._cf_chl_opt.cOgUHash.length).indexOf('?') !== -1 '?' : location.search;if (window.history && window.history.replaceState) {var ogU = location.pathname + window._cf_chl_opt.cOgUQuery + window._cf_chl_opt.cOgUHash;history.replaceState(null "\/has-yad-vashem-failed-the-search-for-reinhold-chrystman-and-choice\/?__cf_chl_rt_tk=LMJtZYJBcLpSatEypJFdqO.PIqUzuTxIJp0zcrOSU8E-1746488412-1.0.1.1-NitDHPOEjSILnSEujJiw57lUmXNqQvrjEp9UoxJFDyA" + window._cf_chl_opt.cOgUHash);cpo.onload = function() {history.replaceState(null ogU);}}document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(cpo);}()); The tailgate WS exit is pretty easy and great fun facing forward to the pilot and just make a tiny hop backward The result is that you will be forced into a normal forward flight position right away To say it straight: it’s almost hard to fuck up Now you might have seen a few more advanced-looking pictures with wingsuiters exiting a tailgate aircraft and flying higher than the aircraft looking at it from above – this must be fun and for many a never-seen-before perspective!  we ended up as a group of wingsuiters at a dropzone with the monumental name ‘Skyforce’ about two hours’ drive south of Warsaw in a district called Lodz – a name that probably most German fellows past their thirties associate with a terrible song about a guy called Theo who is getting his butt kicked in order to drive to Lodz The exact name of the town next to the dropzone is Piotrkow Trybunalski which I translate with my limited Polish knowledge to Peter’s Court.  it might be worth mentioning that Skyforce were operating Short SC-7 Skyvans tailgate aircraft that were manufactured in Northern Ireland between 1963 and 1986 After the first couple of days of jumping there we asked the dropzone operations and the pilot if it would be possible to get us some slightly increased exit speeds They confirmed and gave us some 90 or 100 knots We were happily jumping and trying to convert as much as possible of the forward speed into altitude by using flares that were probably pretty poor at that time We still had loads of fun seeing the aircraft slightly from above.  We asked for gradually increased exit speeds and got 105 even when we took massive hits by the relative wind We learned that jumping not standing-up straight but already a bit feet back and into a normal flying position would help decrease the impact meaning your head was lower than your feet and your neck would first catch air since an accelerated wingsuit can pretty much only fly in one direction we realised that the system was very forgiving we had the pilot increase to around 120 knots exit speed In order to achieve the desired speed quickly after dropping the other skydivers the pilot increased the power and torque of the engines We initially did not like the thought of losing exit altitude but soon found out that the difference between the flaring wingsuiter and the diving airplane gives an even better optical impression We had to start making plans about exits; can we exit several people at the same time or is a serial exit necessary; how long a delay must there be in order to maintain safety in case one wingsuiter does a proper flare and another pilot does not Another challenge that we did not have to face previously was that with increased exit speeds and serial exits our group was dispersed over a long distance and we had to come up with a solution to make the group gather as quickly as possible without wasting altitude so we could still enjoy a proper wingsuit flight tightly together especially since there were amazing cloud towers in the area The whole long weekend was great fun and we ended up planning something more structured for the year after… we gathered a bigger group of wingsuiters the year after overtaking the airplane altitude-wise and there were – wait for it – again amazing cloud towers This time we wanted to push a bit further and asked for more and more exit speed When I entered 150 knots into the conversion engine it gave me an amazing exit speed of 277.8 km/h we were not going to argue with our super-friendly and cool pilot Anyhow the event was a great success again to get an impression in real numbers of what we did We came up with a few flares that passed the 100m altitude mark and were quite impressed Combined with the dive of the airplane it looked like a massive amount of altitude!  And the WS pilot’s viewpoint when followed by another wingsuiter… The grins were wide because the description online was ‘the task is to gain as much altitude as possible’ The ‘conventional’ flares were at different initial speed (some say that the top speed was delivered in a different angle which probably would have to be looked into and was more of an opinion than a solidly-checked fact) and also set with completely different suits Most were using powerful Squirrel CR+ suits and we were using Squirrel’s awesome all-round suits Freak 2 we also added videos to clearly show where the flares had their origin I talked to Aleksandr and asked if we could get a separate section for HSE – High Speed Exits He agreed and it is coming later this year The competitions will not be dead serious but all the HSE-sceptics that were negative or doubtful are cordially invited to participate and aim to beat the previous numbers with their flare skills Both events will not be just about the flares but will be used as a gathering of competent wingsuit pilots that still have around 3,500 meters of altitude to have fun together after the HSE flare At Skyforce there will be some competent canopy pilots that will not say no to some XRW and at Skydive Pink Klatovy there will be some other goodies waiting.  What could your takeaway of this article be and the world will keep spinning and evolving Just because many are stuck with their discipline (and are most probably happy) does not mean that the sport cannot grow and change Stay curious and hungry and encourage others to be the same!  A takeaway for the wild and ferocious could be that doing new and exciting stuff does not need to be dangerous and reckless Almost all the seriously badass videos you find online took many attempts and years of training Increasing exit speeds in 5-10 knot portions instead of going big in one shot helped us just as much as sitting together and discussing things We have the most total fun and happiness when sustained over a long period of time without accidents or drawbacks maybe this makes you curious to give it a go? High Speed Exits can be performed with small wingsuits as easily as with large ones and are just as fun Ask your local Wingsuit First Flight Course Instructor or myself.  Daniel Ossio (CH) is a cyber security expert He has performed more than 2500 wingsuit jumps and about 20 wingsuit wind tunnel hours and is part of the Display Swiss Wingsuit Team and the Swiss National Wingsuit Performance Team a German AWF record and other wingsuit and AWF camps in various countries He would like to thank squirrel.ws and swissskydive.org for the great support Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" You have successfully joined our subscriber list About Skydive Mag Contact Us Advertise Terms of Service Advertising Terms Contributor Terms Privacy Policy Cookie Policy Skydive Mag Limited is a company registered in England and Wales at Companies House with company number 06587800 Copyright © 2025 All Rights Reserved.
