Emergency workers secured the area around the pipeline near Pniewy
after learning of a possible leak at around 7:30 a.m
Part of the Druzhba oil pipeline that links Russia and Germany was shut down after the discovery of a leak in western Poland, the Polish pipeline operator PERN said Sunday
a crude pipeline leak was identified near the town of Pniewy
on one of the two lines of the western section through which crude oil reaches refineries in Germany,” PERN said in a statement
“Pumping on the damaged line was shut down immediately
and oil deliveries are continuing on the second line
whose technical capabilities fully cover the needs of customers,” PERN said
Druzhba is one of the world’s largest pipelines with a maximum capacity of 2 million barrels per day
PERN said the cause of the spill was being investigated by its internal committee
but reassured the public that it was not in danger
PERN said work to replace the damaged pipeline
which was discovered in a culvert under a road
will not affect Druzhba’s oil supplies
The Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline network was started in the 1960s and covers 5,500 kilometers (3,417 miles)
pumping oil from the Urals to Europe through two main branches via Belarus and Ukraine
Germany stopped buying Russian oil and the European Union placed an embargo on Russian oil supplies after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022
But Druzhba was temporarily exempted from EU sanctions for Central European members Hungary
which still rely on Russian energy supplies
Druzhba was previously partly shut after similar oil leak discoveries in August 2023 and October 2022

according to the State Fire Service in Pniewy
The incident occurred on one of the two lines of the western section of the pipeline that delivers oil to refineries in Germany
The leak was found in a section under National Road 92
The damaged section of the pipeline will be replaced
"Pumping on the damaged line was immediately shut down
and oil supplies continue through the second line
whose technical capacity fully meets the volume requirements of our clients," assured the spokesperson
PERN's emergency response team and the Polish State Fire Service quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and enable safe repairs
The cause of the incident is currently unknown
and an internal committee at PERN will investigate
The company assures that the repairs will not affect current oil deliveries or the operation of the national road

which has been operating in Poland for 60 years
is the leader in oil and fuel logistics in the country
a strategic company ensuring national security
Its infrastructure includes the Druzhba pipeline
the world's largest oil transmission system
The western section of the Druzhba pipeline
where the leak occurred in early December 2024
has an annual capacity of 27 million tons of crude oil
It connects the Raw Material Base in Miszewko Strzałkowskie in northern Poland to the MVL tank farm in Schwedt
This section of the pipeline supplies crude oil to two German refineries: PCK Raffinerie GmbH in Schwedt and TOTAL Raffinerie Mitteldeutschland GmbH in Spergau
The oil spill occurred near the town of Pniewy
The leak happened on one of the two lines of the western section of the Druzhba pipeline
at a point where it crosses under National Road 92
A leak recently occurred on the Druzhba oil pipeline near Pniewy in western Poland. The pipeline has been shut down for repairs, the pipeline operator PERN reports.
oil transport was immediately halted on the damaged section
and the flow was redirected through an alternate pipeline route
Emergency services from PERN and the State Fire Service headed to the site
and prompt authorization was given to start repair works for safe continuation
The pipeline operator PERN noted that the cause of the leak is unknown
and an internal commission will investigate it
The affected section was supplying oil to a refinery in Germany
The Druzhba pipeline is significant due to its scale and its role in European energy security
Druzhba provided transportation of large volumes of Russian oil to European countries
This system is the main source of oil supply for several countries
Russia has also used the pipeline as a political tool in its dealings with the EU
However, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and EU sanctions, the Druzhba pipeline's significance has diminished. Despite this, it remains critical for some countries, such as Hungary.

Dinha had always dreamt of playing in Europe
Here was a chance to take his game to the bright lights of Tychy
a city in Silesia in southern Poland. But little did he know that there was an unpleasant welcome awaiting him at Sokol Pniewy FC
“When I was in Poland we went to another city to play a match
when the bus was entering the stadium fans started throwing stones at my window,” the former Zimbabwe international says
he thought the opposition fans hated his team
“I started crying when I discovered that they were throwing stones at me because I was black,” he says
Dinha could not even warm up and had to walk back to the dressing room where he wept uncontrollably
“The coach came up to me and told me I would not play that game
they had to sneak me into the bus and I was told to lie on the seat so that fans would not see me.”
And then there was an incident where a young boy walked up to him and asked to see his hand
“The kid held my hand as if he was holding a dirty thing
He looked at both sides of my hand and said ‘you didn’t bath’ I said ‘why?’ and he said because your hand is dirty on the outside and clean on the inside,” he says

has expanded its operations in Poland with the acquisition of a production facility in the east of the country
will increase ABP's production capacity in Poland to up to 250,000 cattle per year
The announcement comes just a week after the European Commission cleared the acquisition of Slaney Foods and Slaney Proteins by ABP and Britain's Fane Valley
ABP began operations in Poland in 2011 after it bought a facility in Pniewy
This was followed by the acquisition of a second facility in Klosowice in 2013
ABP will now employ almost 600 people in Poland and has invested significantly in the country
Production has already started at ABP Tykocin
The main markets for beef produced at the facility include Poland
ABP Food Group will be attending the SIAL International Food Expo in Paris this week
where it will be meeting with buyers and procurement managers from many of Europe's top retail and food service companies
This trade show is dedicated to the agri-food industry

LARRY Goodman's ABP Food Group has agreed terms to buy another beef-processing plant in Poland
dramatically increasing its footprint in the country
ABP said it has bought a second facility in Klosowice in the west of the country
That move will increase the company's production capacity to more than 100,000 animals a year
It is understood that ABP are paying between €5m and €10m to Italian firm Ferrarini
The firm entered Poland two years ago when it took over a plant in Pniewy
which is said to be close to the newly acquired facility
That one employs over 130 people and is one of the most efficient meat processing plants in Europe
Production in the new plant is slated to begin next February
and is expected to employ around 120 people once it is fully up and running
Company chief executive Paul Finnerty said that a presence in Poland -- the second biggest beef exporter in Europe after Ireland -- was vital for ABP
"This expansion will allow ABP Poland to further solidify our position as a sustainable supplier of high-quality Polish beef products to customers throughout Europe
"When we entered the Polish market we intended to build a business of significant scale
and this acquisition is a continuation of that strategy," he added
News of the ABP deal came as Dawn Meats said it was in talks with French co-op Terrena about taking a minority stake in its beef business Elivia
Talks are ongoing but if they succeed it will be a transformational one for the Irish company
