Man who became distraught after viewing footage of the fatal shooting of his son crashed into officer the next day
The distraught father of an 18-year-old shot and killed by police in Cincinnati allegedly killed a police officer with his car less than 24 hours after the death of his son
The double killing has shocked the Ohio city amid ongoing concerns about US law enforcement’s involvement in lethal encounters with citizens
The incident began last Thursday with the shooting death of Ryan Hinton
who police said had appeared to point a gun at an officer as he fled from a stolen vehicle with three other people
Body camera footage released by police shows an officer shouting: “He’s got a gun
The blurry and unclear footage then shows Hinton emerging from between two dumpsters
When Hinton’s family viewed the footage at a meeting with police
was present at the meeting and they were understandably distraught as they watched the bodycam video,” a statement from the family’s lawyers said
“After the meeting with the police department
Ryan Hinton’s father left in his own vehicle and that was the last we heard from him until learning about the tragic incident involving a law enforcement officer who was working a traffic detail near the University of Cincinnati.”
That incident happened on Friday afternoon when a police officer – who has not yet been named publicly – was hit by a car as he directed traffic at an intersection
Police identified the driver of that vehicle as the teen’s 38-year-old father
He was later charged with aggravated murder
The slain police officer was not believed to have been involved with the killing of Ryan Hinton
“This is a horrific tragedy on both sides … This family lost their son, and this police officer lost his life,” Michael Wright, the Hinton family attorney, told the Cincinnati Enquirer
Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInCINCINNATI (WXIX) - The lawyers for the family of the 18-year-old who died in East Price Hill during a police investigation say it is unclear if officers were ever in “imminent danger” when one officer fired his weapon
was identified by Cincinnati police as the suspect they say had a semi-automatic handgun visible when an officer shot him May 1 in East Price Hill
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said at a May 2 press conference
The fatal shooting with police stemmed from a stolen vehicle investigation
Attorney Michael Wright said the facts that Ryan Hinton had a gun and was in a stolen vehicle did not mean he had to die
so you can open carry in Ohio," Wright stated Monday
Being in a stolen car doesn’t mean you should be shot and killed.”
Wright said what happened in the parking lot in East Price Hill is “not so cut and dry.”
The attorney for the Hinton family said the video they were shown of the officer’s interaction with Ryan Hinton makes it “hard to determine whether or not that officer was in imminent danger.”
Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President Ken Kober
said the officer felt threatened as Ryan Hinton ran towards them
says what he saw from the officer’s body camera was “an emotional mistake by everybody.”
The grandfather said it did not look like the police were there to kill
The Hinton family’s lawyers said they have requested more video from the officer-involved shooting and will investigate
A few hours after Ryan Hinton’s family saw the body camera video of their son’s shooting
used his car to “intentionally” murder a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputy
The deputy was identified Sunday as Larry Henderson
He had been with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for 33 years

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, in co-ordination with the justice ministry, said suspects had recruited participants to carry out attacks using improvised explosives and the plan was aimed at gaining notoriety on social media.
The person responsible for the plan and a teenager were arrested, the police said.
Lady Gaga's team said they learned about the bomb threat only from media reports the morning after the gig. A crowd of more than two million people gathered for the concert, which was free to attend.
Police said the group that planned the attack had been spreading hate speech, mainly against children, adolescents and the LGBTQ+ community.
The alleged mastermind was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, while the teenager was detained for storing child pornography in Rio.
Those responsible were also promoting the radicalisation of teenagers, including self-harm and violent content "as a form of belonging and challenge among young people".
A spokesperson for Lady Gaga told The Hollywood Reporter: "We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning.
"Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks."
The justice ministry said the suspects had identified themselves as Lady Gaga fans, known widely as "Little Monsters".
Police issued search warrants across the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paulo, and electronic devices and other materials were seized.
"Operation Fake Monster" was launched following a tip-off from Rio state police intelligence, which uncovered online groups encouraging violence among teenagers using coded language and extremist symbolism.
The concert was paid for by the city in an attempt to revitalise Rio's economy, with expectations it could bring in $100m (£75m).
In a massive security operation, 5,000 officers were deployed and attendees had to pass through metal detectors. Drones and facial recognition cameras were also used to police the event.
Lady Gaga, who last performed in Brazil in 2012, took the stage as part of a tour to promote her eighth album, Mayhem.
The singer wore Brazil-themed costumes for some of her acts, with outfits inspired by the national football team.
"You waited for more than 10 years for me," an emotional Lady Gaga told the huge crowd, holding out a Brazilian flag.
Headliners at the California music festival this year include Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone and Green Day.
The Giver singer speaks about her fearlessness and being inspired by Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter.
As she returns to pop with her seventh album, Mayhem, Lady Gaga reflects on the loneliness of fame.
This week also sees the release of Split Fiction, R-Patz's new film Mickey-17 and Meghan's delayed TV show.

BOSTON – A former Sergeant with the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) was found guilty today by a federal jury in Boston of orchestrating a series of schemes to give false passing scores to certain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) applicants, including individuals who had failed or did not take the CDL skills test, as part of years-long bribery and extortion conspiracies.
In January 2024, Cederquist was charged in a 74-count indictment along with three other MSP troopers and two civilians:
All of Cederquist’s co-defendants have accepted responsibility for their involvement in the conspiracy. Butner, Mendes, Camara and Mathison have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
Cederquist was in charge of MSP’s CDL Unit, of which former Troopers Butner, Mendes and Rogers were members. Class A CDLs are required to drive combination vehicles (e.g., tractor-trailers). Class B CDLs are required to drive heavy single vehicles (e.g., box trucks, oil tankers, school buses). Test requirements for CDLs are established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Among the CDL applicants to whom Cederquist gave preferential treatment were six MSP Troopers who Cederquist falsely reported as having passed a Class A skills test. In reality, however, the Troopers did not take a real CDL skills test. For four of the Trooper applicants, Cederquist conspired with his friend Camara, who worked for a truck-driving school in Brockton, to accomplish this offense.
In exchange for using his official position to give preferential treatment to certain CDL applicants, Cederquist accepted a variety of bribes including inventory from Mathison’s water company valued in the thousands of dollars; a $750 granite post and mailbox; a new driveway valued at over $10,000; and a snowblower valued at nearly $2,000. Cederquist described one such applicant as “horrible,” and “brain dead,” but gave him a passing score anyway in exchange for the snowblower.
All CDL recipients identified as not qualified during the course of this investigation have been reported to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
U.S. Attorney Foley; HSI SAC Krol; and DOT PAIG Chawaga made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christine J. Wichers and Adam W. Deitch of the Public Corruption & Special Prosecutions Unit are prosecuting the case.

He has been focused on implementing 21st Century Policing reforms to address public safety and reduce crime in San Francisco
Chief Scott’s reform efforts have been nationally recognized as a way to build trust with communities and improve a sense of legitimacy in policing that have led to better public safety outcomes for San Francisco
The reform project began with 272 recommendations from the Obama administration’s Department of Justice
When then-Attorney General Jeffrey Sessions abandoned to national reform project in 2017
Chief Scott reached out to the California Department of Justice to partner in overseeing the SFPD’s voluntary reform initiative.
The SFPD submitted the final responses to the Department of Justice’s reform recommendations on April 1
Chief Scott has created a foundation to ensure the department continues to build on its reform initiative
While working to establish a national model for police reform
Chief Scott has led the department through challenging times
including the global COVID-19 pandemic and a national crisis in policing
following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Violent crime in San Francisco has remained far below other major cities in the United States while clearances for violent crimes like homicides are well above the national average.
Chief Scott has embraced new and innovative ways to address some of San Francisco’s biggest challenges
He developed new crime-fighting strategies and implemented technologies like ALPR cameras and drones that have had significant results in identifying and arresting suspects
He attended the University of Alabama where he earned a degree in accounting
He is also a graduate of Senior Management of Institute of Policing.

Last Friday morning, Phoenix police were called to the neighborhood near 32nd Street and Campo Bello Drive, just north of Bell Road, after a woman reported their father had been injured inside a home. When officers arrived, they found the victim, identified as Jack Olsen, 73, dead from several stab wounds
The woman told officers she saw her boyfriend
Kohls reportedly walked into the kitchen and pulled out a second knife while telling her that he needed to “finish” off Olsen
Detectives at the home recovered a large knife with blood and another knife with a broken handle
Kohls then reportedly showered and ran from the home
Officers later found Kohls hiding in the woman’s bathroom at a nearby park
He was found with several cuts to his hands and had reportedly said it could have happened during the incident
Kohls reportedly admitted that he was upset at Olsen because of “the way he treated his girlfriend.” He told detectives that he planned to break Olsen’s neck but had been unsuccessful
so he pulled a knife and stabbed the victim
He also reportedly admitted to cleaning up in the bathroom before leaving the scene
Kohls was booked into the Maricopa County jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond
He faces a single charge of first-degree murder

The New Hampshire State Police is the latest — and largest — law enforcement agency in the state to announce a partnership with ICE as part of President Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts
a move local immigration activists say is unwarranted and potentially harmful
The State Police force announced last week that it has formally enrolled in what’s known as ICE’s 287(g) program as a task force partner
which will give an unspecified number of state troopers the ability to enforce aspects of federal immigration law
including questioning and detaining people about their legal status
a domain that traditionally has only been handled by federal agents
New Hampshire's is the only state police agency in New England to participate in the program
The partnership with ICE appears to contradict portions of a policy enacted in 2019 by the New Hampshire State Police to engage in “fair and impartial” policing
including prohibiting officers from detaining individuals suspected of being in the country illegally based solely on probable cause
was involved in the crafting of the 2019 policy and says it “really made a difference” for immigrant communities
she’s concerned the partnership with ICE will lead to an erosion of trust between troopers and the residents they serve and protect
“I hope we don’t go back to those days where driving while brown is a sin in New Hampshire,” Castillo said
The 287(g) partnership program dates to the 1990s
but the task force portion of it all but ended during the Obama administration due to concerns about racial profiling
The ACLU has called the program “a vehicle for racist
rather than the bona fide public safety measure its proponents have claimed.”
The Trump administration has ramped up the number of partnerships in recent months
as the president works to follow through on campaign promises to remove people without legal status residing in the country
including those who may have criminal records
More than 500 law enforcement agencies nationwide have now enrolled in the program
That includes nine other New Hampshire agencies
among them several county sheriff departments and local police departments
Kelly Ayotte applauded the state police for enrolling in the program
saying last week that “criminals who are in our country illegally and pose a danger to our communities should be apprehended and removed.”
who said that “the members of the New Hampshire State Police are committed to keeping our communities among the safest in the nation.”
What isn’t clear, however, is if the state police will still abide by their “Fair and Impartial Policing” policy from 2019. Under those guidelines
troopers are unable to “arrest or otherwise detain an individual solely upon probable cause that the individual is an undocumented alien,” according to the document
troopers were not supposed to ask immigration-related questions unless there was other suspected criminal activity
But according to the recently signed memorandum with ICE
troopers will have the “power and authority to interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien” regarding their legal status in the country
as well as make immigration-related arrests
A New Hampshire State Police spokesperson said “troopers with delegated authority under the agreement will follow all State Police policies,” but the agency declined to answer if the 2019 policies were still in effect
Castillo says she met with leaders from the state’s Department of Safety late last week to address her concerns about the new expanded powers
“I think they're going to try to adhere as best as they can to the principles of not conducting racial profiling on the highways,” she said
I think it makes sense to just wait and see.”
the other New Hampshire law enforcement agencies that have enrolled in the task force program include the Belknap
Grafton and Rockingham County sheriff's offices
and police departments in the towns of Candia
any expenses incurred during implementation of the partnership fall on local or state tax payers
and are not covered by the federal government

CT (WFSB) - Connecticut was the runner-up when it came to the best states to be a police officer
The personal finance website WalletHub.com on Monday released its list of 2025’s Best & Worst States to be a Police Officer
It put the Constitution State as the 2nd best
WalletHub said it compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 30 indicators of police friendliness
and state and local police protection expenses per capita
Here’s how Connecticut’s metrics ranked and contributed to the state’s overall rank:
Joining Connecticut in the top three were California (1st) and Illinois (3rd)
“Some states make protecting and serving the public in a law enforcement career more appealing than others,” said Chip Lupo
“The best states for police officers offer competitive compensation
supplemented by solid training that helps minimize the chances of deadly violence between officers and civilians
State-level policies like ‘red flag laws’ or ‘Blue Alerts’ also contribute to a better environment for police.”

Taylor — Vowing "no one in this department will be getting arrested for subverting federal law," Taylor Police Chief John Blair said Monday his agency signed an agreement last week with U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement that allows local officers to question people about their immigration status
The law allows federal immigration enforcement authorities to delegate functions such as investigating
arresting or detaining noncitizens to local agencies
As of May 2, 2025, ICE has signed 517 nationwide Memorandums of Agreement for 287(g) programs, encompassing 39 states, the federal agency said on its website
"It doesn't change anything — exact same policing as when I walked in the door 34 years ago," Blair said in a statement to The Detroit News
"We aren't kicking in doors or searching for illegal immigrants
If you are arrested for a criminal offense
If in the lawful process of identifying you it is determined you are in the country illegally
"We will NOT subvert federal law enforcement from enforcing illegal immigration law," Blair said
"No one in this department will be getting arrested for subverting federal law."
“the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security shall pursue all necessary legal remedies and enforcement measures to end these violations and bring such jurisdictions into compliance with the laws of the United States."
The two executive orders were decried by the American Civil Liberties Union, which issued a statement calling the directives "just the latest escalation in the Trump administration’s shakedown of cities
and elected officials that refuse to offer up local resources for the administration’s mass deportation and detention agenda."
The Task Force Model was reinstated by Trump when he assumed office Jan. 20.
engagement and communications manager at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center
criticized Taylor police officials for signing the agreement with ICE
"It is alarming that Taylor's police department is choosing to use local tax dollars to subsidize federal efforts to cruelly uproot our immigrant neighbors," Sauvé said in a statement
"They are choosing to risk racial profiling
all which can be very costly for a small community like Taylor."
According to ICE, the agency's Removal Operations has three 287(g) models: Jail Enforcement
"The Jail Enforcement Model is designed to identify and process removable aliens — with criminal or pending criminal charges — who are arrested by state or local law enforcement agencies," ICE said on its website
"The Task Force Model serves as a force multiplier for law enforcement agencies to enforce limited immigration authority with ICE oversight during their routine police duties ..
(and) the Warrant Service Officer program allows ICE to train
certify and authorize state and local law enforcement officers to serve and execute administrative warrants on aliens in their agency’s jail."
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office signed up for the Warrant Service Officer Model
241 agencies have Task Force Model agreements
with 189 in the Warrant Service Officer model
Sauvé said the Task Force model "is riddled with problems," referencing the Department of Justice's findings in Maricopa County, Arizona, and a 2016 Brookings Institution study that found that Prince William County
had to raise property taxes and take money from its "rainy day” fund to implement its 287(g) program
"Maricopa County is still paying for its long-shuttered 287(g) program
and Prince William County had to raise property taxes and take money from its 'rainy day' fund to cover the cost," Sauvé said
"And none of this has been shown to increase public safety
they're spending less time and resources on local policing
"Community members lose trust and are less likely to come forward to report crimes which makes everyone less safe," Sauvé said
"Local tax dollars would be better spent building trust with residents and enforcing local laws
rather than subsidizing the work of federal immigration enforcement."
Taylor's agreement with ICE comes amid fierce debate over Trump's immigration policies
and the role local agencies and municipalities play in the federal deportation operation
Last week, a package of five bills passed in the Michigan House of Representatives that would ban local governments from enforcing "sanctuary" policies that restrict police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities
In February, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office changed its policy about cooperating with federal immigration officials
removed language forbidding jail employees from holding inmates on ICE detainers unless the federal agency was unable to provide more than a detainer or administrative warrant
the new policy continues to prohibit jail staff from releasing inmates to ICE unless the federal agency provides an arrest warrant
The new Wayne County policy also clarifies that inmates must finish their sentences for all state or local criminal charges before they're released to ICE
Lawyers say evidence file outlines atrocities including torture and rape carried out by the Rapid Support Forces in the country’s brutal civil conflict
Lawyers have submitted a 142-page file of evidence to the war crimes unit of the Metropolitan police containing details of numerous atrocities perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)
Now into its third year, the catastrophic war between the RSF and the Sudanese military has prompted the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis
killed at least 150,00 people and forced 12 million from their homes
offer evidence that the RSF’s leadership are responsible for repeated war crimes
focusing on the legal principle of “command responsibility” – that commanders knew or ought to have known about the atrocities committed by their troops
Former international judge Sir Howard Morrison described the dossier’s weight of evidence as “compelling”
The lead lawyer, Lucia Brieskova, added: “We believe this submission will contribute to the fight against impunity suffered by many in Darfur in Sudan.”
The case was instructed by a Sudanese pro-democracy supporter
whom the Guardian is not naming for security reasons
It comes as the international court of justice is expected to deliver a verdict on whether the United Arab Emirates can plausibly be found “complicit in the commission of genocide” by arming the RSF in Sudan’s civil war
The case was brought by Sudan who said the UAE has been arming the RSF with the aim of wiping out the non-Arab Masalit population of west Darfur. The UAE has said the case is a cynical publicity stunt.
Read moreRecently the Trump administration characterised atrocities committed by the RSF in Darfur as genocide, reaffirming a designation made by the Biden administration in January
The submission sent to Scotland Yard says evidence assembled by the UN
proved war crimes in Darfur were perpetrated by RSF troops
“Steps should have been taken by the RSF leadership to address the situation
this direct and circumstantial evidence makes it clear that the RSF leadership either knew
that the war crimes were being committed by the RSF in Darfur
they have a case to answer under international criminal and humanitarian law,” it states
Although the ICC investigation is focusing on war crimes in Darfur
reports of atrocities being committed throughout the country continue to emerge
footage circulated online showed at least 31 people
were killed by the RSF in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman
The Sudanese army also faces accusations of committing atrocities against civilians
WASHINGTON − Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., faced another hostile crowd at a town hall as attendees broke out into boos and jeers and a constituent was forcibly removed by police

At one point during the town hall, police surrounded a woman in the crowd and she told them, “I’m not leaving,” according to footage from ABC News
“Let her stay!” and she was eventually carried out of the event by police
claiming that he’s willing to work across the aisle to get bills passed
“Bipartisan sounds nice, but meaningful bipartisanship is in votes taken, not in the fig-leaf of co-sponsored bills,” one attendee told Lawler
“Now is your time to stand up to the authoritarian Trump regime.”
The Associated Press reported that the crowd walked out of the town hall when the final question was asked on protests against Israel

the La Porte City Police Department is preparing to step up patrols to crack down on seatbelt usage
the La Porte City Police Department will join police officers across the state to participate in a national campaign to promote safe driving habits including seat belt usage
it’s critical to remind all motorists that wearing a seatbelt is not just the law; it’s something that can save your life,” said Douglas Huntsinger
Executive Director for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute
“Our goal is simple – we want everyone to make it home safely
Buckling up is the first step in achieving that goal.”
This high-visibility enforcement campaign is part of a nationwide effort funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through grants administered by ICJI
the La Porte City Police Department will take a no-excuses approach to enforcement
issuing citations to anyone not properly restrained.
“If the enforcement effort alerts people to the dangers of unrestrained driving
we’ll consider our mission to be a success,” said Chief Matthew Drangmeister
“We are asking friends and family to remind each other to buckle up when they drive
and to consider changing their habits if they don’t.”
Indiana continues to see strong compliance with its seat belt laws
ICJI’s latest observational survey found that 93.6% of Indiana drivers wear their seatbelts
there is still work to be done to reach the remaining 6.4% of drivers who put themselves at risk.
state traffic safety leaders are reminding people why the laws exist in the first place.

“Putting on a seat belt takes just a few seconds but can make all the difference in the event of a crash
Research consistently shows that seat belts can reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by up to 65%
people are at a higher risk of being ejected from a vehicle
