The “new American way of diplomacy” following the Cold War saw the closure of provincial posts around the world
I was serving as the country public affairs officer at U.S
Embassy Warsaw when officials above my pay grade decided to close our consulate general and associated United States Information Service (USIS) branch post in Poznan
The United States had won the Cold War and deserved a peace dividend
We could do without a presence in western Poland
would be sufficient representation outside the Polish capital
the decision seemed penny-wise and pound-foolish
given Poland’s role as a pivotal frontline NATO state in the struggle to protect Eastern Europe from Moscow’s push to restore its empire
The United States now has 10,000 troops stationed in the country
but we have diplomatic posts only in Warsaw and Krakow
we have been closing provincial posts in favor of operating from heavily fortified embassy chanceries
No doubt this new American way of diplomacy is safer and less costly
But it also risks leaving us out of touch with daily life in places like Poland
Nor does it help advance our foreign policy goals that the agency charged with leading the effort to understand
and influence foreign publics has disappeared into the Department of State
The country founded out of a decent respect for the opinions of humankind apparently decided what others think is no longer a priority
Information Agency director) famously said that in communication
It’s one reason why posts like USIS Poznan had so much to offer: they were closer to the people
As Americans once again rethink our country’s role in the world
some even question the wisdom of backing friends and allies such as Ukraine
we should consider not only what our efforts cost but also what they’re worth
What follows is my report at the time—written for USIA World
the agency’s house organ—about the value of USIS Poznan
and what was lost when this post and others like it were shuttered
A small band of Polish civic leaders and American officials did the honors on a cold
sunny morning in the courtyard of the building that has housed USIS
There were fine speeches by the ambassador
The mayor said the Americans had always been there since he was a boy; he hoped they might come back one day
not because the difficult times of the past had returned
He had in mind a Polish economic boom that would make Americans see value in being on the spot
Speaking for the 25 employees of the consulate and USIS
Public Affairs Specialist Urszula Dziuba talked with dignity and eloquence about the pride Poles took in representing both America and their fatherland
in going to work every day in an office where values like integrity
“the more so since it was present in our daily work.” The paradox
is that “it is freedom that is now taking the Americans away from us.”
as follows: “This building in the years 1959 to 1995 proudly served as the headquarters of the consulate general of the United States of America
In the most difficult years of the Polish nation
the consulate was a living symbol of the engagement of America in the return of freedom and independence to Poland
A grateful nation and government of the United States of America dedicates this plaque to the Polish employees of the consulate
who throughout those years faithfully served the cause of Polish-American friendship.”
The craftsman who chiseled the handsome plaque
refused to accept any payment for his work
saying it was his contribution to the Americans
who had liberated his father from Buchenwald
A Polish military band played the national anthems of the two countries
Marines folded the American banner with painstaking care while a shivering crowd stood at attention and tears welled in more than one pair of eyes
The consul general handed the flag to the mayor
who said it would have a place of honor in the city museum
where an exhibit of grainy black and white photos portray the bloody Poznan riots of 1956
when Poles filled the city’s streets and hundreds died demanding “bread and work.”
but the official American presence in the city will not totally fade away
A “consular agency” will be established in the person of Ms
as well as the State and Commerce departments
housed in a new home in the central library of Adam Mickiewicz University
in the wake of those 1956 riots that were one of the first signs of resistance to the unwanted communist system imposed on Poland and elsewhere in Eastern Europe
the USIS staff did what USIS posts do everywhere
though with the added complication of authorities who regarded Americans as a hostile element to be watched closely
like the martial law years of the early 1980s
Polish citizens could deal with the Americans only at their own peril—and they chose to do so
many gathered with lit candles outside the consulate gates to show their solidarity
Some of the Poles who participated in today’s ceremony found it ironic that the Americans
are leaving now that democracy and capitalism are taking root in Poland
They’ve learned about America’s budget woes and realize that large budgets are made up of small bits (closing this USIS post saves about $200,000 per year)
But many clearly felt saddened and diminished by the decision
One of Poland’s first post-communist prime ministers was Hanna Suchocka
who had been chosen by USIS Poznan to be an international visitor (IV) years earlier when she was an unknown member of the Poznan University law department
Other Poznan IV selections are currently serving as members of Parliament
and directors of radio and television stations
One alumnus is head of the National Bar Association
and another has just published an encyclopedia of American film
Field posts have always been better than embassies at spotting talent at an early age
One reason why posts like USIS Poznan had so much to offer: they were closer to the people
USIS Poznan can claim many other triumphs: the creation of strong bonds between American universities and Polish counterparts in Poznan
Visits by jazz greats from Dave Brubeck to Wynton Marsalis and many other cultural presentations belied regime claims that America was a decadent
When the first NATO exercise ever on the soil of the former Warsaw Pact was held a few miles outside Poznan in 1994
the 600 or so journalists who parachuted in for the occasion managed largely because USIS Poznan staffers were around to help them and military press officers find everything from telephones to the parade ground
The behind-the-scenes work that made “operation cooperative bridge” a public affairs success was typical of the low-key effectiveness of USIS Poznan
which began as an outpost of the Cold War but went beyond conflict to form friendships
and independence that eventually prevailed in Poland
Whatever the future of American relations with western Poland
those who served with USIS in Poznan—among them
Thomas Carmichael—know their work there mattered

“We can say with certainty that the malfunction of the hydrogen buses in Poznań was due to the fault of the hydrogen supplier
who provided fuel with incorrect parameters“
This is the statement by Krzysztof Dostatni
after receiving the results of laboratory reasearch on hydrogen in Poznan
This is the statement by Krzysztof Dostatni, CEO of MPK Poznań, after receiving the results of laboratory reasearch on hydrogen in Poznan, where a fleet of hydrogen bus was put out of service on the 3rd of March reportedly due to diagnostics faults
Out of 25 Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses
which have been in operation for nearly 2 years at MPK Poznań
23 buses almost simultaneously reported the same fuel cell malfunction
It quickly turned out that the 23 buses were refueled from a new hydrogen delivery – an external supplier to MPK Poznań – and the 2 buses that did not have malfunctions were not refueled that day from this hydrogen delivery
Further actions by Solaris service team showed that the cause of the fuel cell malfunction was poor quality hydrogen
This was also confirmed by an independent research company
showed that the hydrogen was contaminated with unacceptable substances at concentrations that did not meet standards
the carbon monoxide content was significantly exceeded
who provided fuel with incorrect parameters
I would like to thank Solaris for their prompt and professional action in restoring the buses to functionality
The costs of this action will be borne by the supplier of the faulty fuel“
work is continuing to clean all the buses of contaminated hydrogen and restore them to full functionality
this action has already been completed on 14 out of 23 buses
The buses can return to service as soon as the supply of hydrogen with the correct parameters to the station used by the carrier is resumed

Ten employees of the Russian consulate general in Poznan will have to leave Poland following Warsaw's decision to close the consular office
Polish Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday
"Three diplomats and five administrative and technical staff will leave the Russian consulate in Poznan, as well as two employees who were supposed to be accredited in Poland, but they will no longer receive this accreditation," ministry spokesman Paweł Wroński said
adding that the institution's staff may leave the country by early November
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Tuesday he would order the closure of one of three Russian consulates in the country in response to sabotage
including arson attacks that he said were sponsored by Moscow
Sikorski demanded Russia halt the hybrid warfare against Poland and its Western allies
warning that Warsaw reserved the right to "take further decisive steps" if it did not stop
I have information that the Russian Federation is behind sabotage attempts both in Poland and allied countries," Sikorski told reporters in Warsaw
He said he was withdrawing consent to open a Russian consulate in Poznan and that its staff would be unwelcome in the country
Russia also has consulates in Gdansk and Krakow
Sikorski cited the arrest in January of a Ukrainian citizen who he said confessed that Russian agents had ordered him to carry out an arson attack in the city of Wrocław
There are about 20 suspected saboteurs under investigation in Poland
adding that he was made aware of other similar arson plans in allied countries
"Putin needs to be restrained," the foreign minister said in an interview with Polish outlet TVN on Monday
"They are undertaking similar arson attacks across Europe
and we know of other such plans by Russia."
The pro-European government in Warsaw has repeatedly said the Kremlin was waging a hybrid war against the West in retaliation for its support for Ukraine against the ongoing Russian full-scale invasion
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova shot back at the authorities in Warsaw by stating Russia would not hesitate in its response
get ready," Zakharova told the state-run news agency Tass
Three Polish consulates remain open in Russia: in Kaliningrad
have been temporarily withdrawn from service and returned to the depot
The decision was made on an emergency basis after onboard diagnostic systems detected unexpected faults in the vehicles
as reported on Polish trade media Transinfo.pl
The same operator MPK announced the decision on social media
14 hydrogen buses operated by MPK Poznań, in Poland, have been temporarily withdrawn from service and returned to the depot. The decision was made on an emergency basis after onboard diagnostic systems detected unexpected faults in the vehicles, as reported on Polish trade media Transinfo.pl
Solaris shared the more likely reason being poor fuel/hydrogen quality
in the afternoon also in the city of Walbrzych some Solaris fuel cell buses were put out of service
This move points to hydrogen supplier ORLEN
which could mean a wider problem with supply or refuelling infrastructure
378 fuel cell buses were registered all around Europe in 2024
The operator wrote on social media on 3rd March: “We would like to inform you that we were forced to bring back to the depot all hydrogen-powered Solaris Urbino 12 Hydrogen buses
in which the on-board computers signalled a breakdown today in the afternoon hours
all the withdrawn units were immediately replaced with the remaining available rolling stock
We are currently working together with the bus manufacturer and the hydrogen fuel supplier to clarify the cause and resolve the problems
which we will keep you informed of.”
Solaris states that “the most likely cause of the malfunctions in several hydrogen buses in Poznań is poor fuel/hydrogen quality
This is currently being clarified and checked in independent laboratories examining hydrogen samples from the station that supplies the buses in Poznań”
layered croissant is irrevocably tied to France
the Renaissance-era city of Poznań in western Poland comes alive with an extravaganza starring a very special horseshoe-shaped pastry; the Rogale swiętomarciński
While the rest of the country celebrates Poland's Independence from Prussian
waves of entertainers ranging from stilt-walkers to pom-pom-waving cheerleaders march through Poznań's streets for the St Martin's Day Parade
Around 1.25 million St Martin's croissants are consumed on that day alone – equating to about 250 tonnes of pastry
This sweet treat's saintly origins go back to the 19th Century when a local priest encouraged his congregation to help the poor in the spirit of St Martin, who famously cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar
A local baker named Józef Melzer is credited with the idea of honouring the pious act by creating a pastry when he prayed to St Martin and dreamed that a white horse entered Poznań and lost its golden shoe
he made horseshoe-shaped croissants to give to the city's poor
and the tradition quickly spread as more bakers joined in
the delicious treat evolved into a regional speciality
Despite the physical resemblance and the similar name – rogale means croissant in Polish – the St Martin's croissant is distinct from the classic French pastry
Poznań's version is topped with sugar and nuts
and the flaky pastry layers ooze with a thick
luxurious filling made of white poppy seeds
Each croissant weighs around 250g and comes in at belly-busting 1,200 calories
the croissants are priced between 15-20 zloty (£2.90-£3.80) per pastry
reflecting the time and effort put into creating this legendary food
as well as another Polish speciality: the kiełbasa biała parzona
a white sausage from the region of Wielkopolska
This ruling means that only certified bakeries in Poznań are allowed to produce these croissants under the official name
They must also follow strict guidelines to ensure the quality is upheld and apply annually for certification
Each baker applying for a certificate must make 24 croissants
which are tested to ensure they follow the exact ingredients and method
which includes folding the dough to create the required 81 layers before the filling can be added
The entire process can take up to six hours
with 35 minutes left between each turn to allow the dough to breathe
just 84 bakeries were given certification by the Chapter of the Traditional Rogal Swietomarcinski
• The new croissant taking Paris by storm
• Katarzynki: Poland’s famous gingerbread from Torun
• The dumpling that comforts Poland
Production goes into overdrive in November
with tonnes of ingredients brought in to accommodate the city gobbling up more than a million croissants on parade day
One of the Poznań's busiest bakers is Hanna Piskorska, who has six shops in the city and her products are so popular she also sells them online across the world
which shows the great trust people have in our croissants," said Piskorska
On St Martin's Day, the entire city stops to celebrate the saint and its beloved croissant. The thunderous procession starts at St Martin's Church (step inside to see a carving of the saint slicing off a swathe of his cape to pass to a cold and hungry beggar) and continues along St Martin's Street, ending after a nine-minute walk to the Imperial Castle
an impressive monument constructed under German rule in 1910
Not in town on 11 November for the St Martin's Day Parade? Poznan has a Croissant Museum which offers a fun
hands on introduction to the pastry and its history
the museum has workshops in English and Polish where visitors can try their hand at making a croissant; the one judged to be best is cooked and presented to the maker to eat
At the forefront of the procession is St Martin on a white horse
portrayed by an actor in colourful historical costume
Around him are locals in traditional 18th-Century Bamberg dress – first brought to Poznań by German immigrants – with women donning long
flowing colourful clothes and hats made from flowers
People carry baskets of croissants through the crowds lining the streets to make sure no one goes hungry
and there's even a croissant fair where the 84 approved bakers sell their pastries so people can taste them all and pick their favourites
the Mayor of Poznań ceremonially hands over the keys to the city to St Martin
symbolising his authority for the day," said Weronika Duszak from the Croissant Museum

created by studios such as Conran and Partners and De Salles Flint
Puro Poznań recently emerged from a top-to-toe overhaul
As with the brand’s other properties
has been informed by the hotel’s location
drawing on its home within the city’s historic Old Town
‘We chose to introduce a natural material palette and focus on a series of new key elements that would have the most impact along a guest’s journey,’ explains project designer Grey Grierson
The result is undeniably lovely to look at
with these key elements emerging through details such as the striking curved reception desk
elevated on three sculpted limestone plinths
‘We wanted to create an eye-catching moment as guests enter the hotel,’ notes Grierson
the desk adds a pop of colour to an otherwise subdued colour scheme
while textural details come by way of a hand-tufted rug
its patterns and colours inspired by the nearby public square
Each space is peppered with regional references
Take the decorative glass in one of the meeting rooms
which echoes Poznań’s art nouveau townhouses
Or the circular cut-out in the partition between the lounge and the reception
which references the early-20th-century locomotives produced in factories in and around the city
glazed ceramic tiles and carved limestone bedside tables that flow into the curve of the fabric headboards
Given the hotel’s location (it’s a mere five-minute stroll to the Old Town Square)
there’s no excuse not to head out and explore this buzzing city
but if you’re looking for excuses to stay in

The Polish transport operator MPK Poznan recently withdrew all 25 hydrogen buses from service after the on-board diagnostic systems of some vehicles detected unexpected malfunctions
five H2 buses are being permanently removed from the fleet
The Polish transport operator MPK Poznan recently withdrew all 25 hydrogen buses from service after the onboard diagnostic systems of some vehicles detected unexpected malfunctions
The most likely cause is considered to be the poor quality of the hydrogen supplied by Orlen
The manufacturer Solaris has allegedly identified the poor quality of the hydrogen that Orlen supplied to the H2 refuelling station as the cause
“This is currently being clarified and checked in independent laboratories examining hydrogen samples from the station that supplies buses in Poznan,” the manufacturer announced
MPK Poznan made a similar statement: “We are currently working together with the bus manufacturer and the hydrogen fuel supplier to clarify the cause and resolve the problems
further details have not yet been communicated
What is clear is that fuel cells require hydrogen with a very high degree of purity in order to function properly – hydrogen for other industrial applications often does not have this quality
The problems could have been caused during production by impurities or simply by a mix-up
However, MPK Poznan intends to stick with the hydrogen buses in principle. The public transport operator in Poznan only ordered nine more vehicles from Solaris in February
which will expand the fleet to 34 H2 buses from April 2026
Meanwhile, in Antwerp, Belgium, the five hydrogen buses used by De Lijn have finally been taken out of service. “From an operational and financial perspective, hydrogen is currently not a viable option for public transport in Belgium,” explained Flemish Mobility Minister Annick De Ridder. The bankruptcy of the manufacturer Van Hool was also a decisive factor
as technical support and maintenance options were no longer available
which would have resulted in potentially significantly higher maintenance and operating costs
“Our electrification strategy is focussed on battery-powered vehicles
There are no plans to use hydrogen buses,” said De Ridder

MPK Poznań’s fleet currently consists of over 300 Solaris buses, including 58 electric and 25 hydrogen vehicles. Solaris has been collaborating with MPK Poznań continuously since 1996. Notably, in January, MPK ordered 17 articulated electric buses from Solaris
The official signing ceremony was attended by representatives of MPK Poznań – CEO Krzysztof Dostatni and Board Member Marek Grzybowski – as well as the Deputy Mayor of Poznań
The new contract reinforces the city’s long-term strategy for the dynamic development of zero-emission public transport
“We are delighted that Poznań remains committed to modern
zero-emission transport solutions and has once again chosen our hydrogen buses
sustainable mobility in the capital of Greater Poland
Our long-standing collaboration with MPK Poznań is a great honor for us and a testament to the trust placed in Solaris technology,” said Javier Iriarte
”Investing in our fleet is a priority for us
as it improves the comfort of public transport and reflects our commitment to environmental protection
the company operates around 330 city buses
with zero-emission vehicles making up 25% of the fleet
Once the latest electric and hydrogen buses are delivered
The introduction of new vehicles means phasing out the least eco-friendly ones,” said Krzysztof Dostatni

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said at a conference in Prague on Oct
Europe must gear up its vigilance to counter such threats

The solution lies in strategic communication

Poznań stands out as a beacon of queer acceptance and activism
Polish native Tomasz Gola explores the ways this city has become queer-friendly
and proactive governance in its transformation
For the LGBTQ+ community, queer spaces meet a mutitude of needs. Such spaces are 'the cultural centers of LGBTQ+ life and often provide the formative physical space for organizing in the ongoing fight in support of equality'
queer spaces are important for facilitating free expression in already-tolerant contexts
Poznań, a city in northwest Poland, is an interesting case. In that city, LGBT activists and organisations have successfully established an open and accepting space in the EU’s most homophobic country
We can learn some important lessons from this queer-friendly city
Poznań's LGBTQ+ community is highly visible
NGOs and social venues all prominently represent gay life
Local authorities are receptive to the needs of the community; for example
by including them in the new education strategy for 2030
But the work of NGOs and activists would be futile if it wasn’t for Poznanians’ cultural receptivity and openness
Locals say their mindset is influenced by geographical and mental closeness to Germany
My research analysed interviews with queer-identifying individuals featured in Mike Urbaniak’s A Different City: Queer Stories from Poznan (Inny Poznań: Rozmowy z Osobami LGBT+)
Interviewees revealed Poznań's strong cultural receptivity
The queer-friendly Poznań of today is the result of the city's rapid accommodation of its LGBT community
Interviewees spoke about the multiple ways their experiences of queer life in Poznań differs from that of queer friends in other Polish cities
Responses tended to focus on three areas that contribute most to the city's queer-friendly feel: venues
Soon after the democratic transition of 1989, a gay scene began to emerge in Poznań, with the opening of several queer bars and clubs. However, many LGBT-identifying Poznanians link the real blossoming of queer spaces with the founding of Grupa Stonewall (Stonewall Group)
an NGO which advocates for gay rights and supports queer individuals
As an interviewee who has lived in the city for about ten years enthused: 'No other city [in Poland]
has such well-developed and high-quality LGBT+ infrastructure'
said: 'I came out of the closet and became a part of the LGBT+ community
so LGBT people cannot take their safety for granted
Poznań's vibrant gay scene allows queer people to feel safe to express themselves freely
As one interviewee told Urbaniak: 'Nothing bad has ever happened to me here because I am gay
which in our country seems like a great achievement
Local activism gives Poznań's LGBT community genuine visibility
and allows them to express their identities free from discrimination
emphasised how they enjoyed fully 'out' lives
and they reported few instances of homophobic behaviour from others
Us being together is completely normal for our colleagues'
Most LGBT people in Poznań live fully 'out' lives
LGBT people in Poznań can also access an array of support services
and offers psychological help and legal advice on gender affirmation
Multiple other organisations offer various forms of support. Fundacja Tęczowe Rodziny (Rainbow Families Foundation)
Through cooperation with local authorities
the foundation gave queer families access to the Big Family Poznań Card discount scheme
Poznań has earned a national reputation for queer inclusion
including one for queer individuals facing homelessness
In further evidence of Poznań's difference from other Polish cities, LGBT people have also been included in the 2030 education strategy planning. Poznań has now earned a national reputation for queer inclusion, with authorities co-funding many services, including one for queer individuals facing homelessness. City authorities now also officially partner in Poznań Pride Week
Interviewees pointed to several factors for Poznań’s high cultural receptivity
including proximity to Berlin and the corresponding Western orientation
'The closeness of Germany has always been radiating culturally and socially to Poznań'
This has resulted in ‘mental Germanness’ and suggests that the locals perceive themselves as different from other Poles
Poznanians respect others’ privacy: they regard non-heteronormative sexuality as a personal matter
and believe that queer presence in public space enriches diversity
While the effect of LGBT activism in Poznań is evident, scholars predict ‘downstream effects’ of higher visibility in other places
Research found that even in less culturally receptive communities
change eventually happens through diffusion
Perhaps with the recent change of government
we Poles can allow ourselves to be a bit more optimistic
I hope to see similar accommodation in other Polish cities

Exploration drilling was conducted by Exalo Drilling
Orlen and Orlen Upstream Polska have discovered the Siedlemin gas field
located at a depth of approximately 3km in the Province of Poznań
the field’s reserves are estimated to hold more than 235 million cubic metres of natural gas
Upstream and Orlen management board member Wiesław Prugar said: “In line with our commitments
we are maximising gas production in Poland to harness every available opportunity
The discovery of the Siedlemin field near Jarocin underscores the strong position of the Province of Poznań on Poland’s energy map
“It is in this province that Orlen produces the largest volumes of natural gas domestically
The exploration and discovery of new fields are integral to our strategy
where gas plays a crucial role in supporting the energy transition by balancing the system that increasingly relies on renewable energy sources
Orlen’s production activities also bring tangible financial benefits to local communities.”
The Siedlemin field is situated in a region with strong hydrocarbon production potential
supported by results from prior exploration and other gas discoveries
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
Orlen’s exploration work is expected to continue in search of more resources in the area
The region’s advanced production and transmission infrastructure is set to minimise time and costs for launching production from new fields
oil and gas companies are required to pay a special production royalty
of which 90% is allocated to the local municipalities where the extraction activities are carried out
the production royalties transferred to municipalities in the Zielona Góra Branch’s operational area amounted to nearly 80m zlotys ($19.7m)
the Orlen Group’s natural gas production reached 7.1 billion cubic metres (bcm)
contributing 42% of Poland’s total demand
with the province of Poznań contributing nearly 1.7bcm
The Group’s new 2035 strategy aims to boost total natural gas production to 12bcm by 2030

Public transport operator MPK Poznań has placed an order for additional hydrogen-powered buses from Solaris
A total of nine Urbino 12 hydrogen units will be delivered to the Polish city of Poznań by the end of April 2026
expanding the existing hydrogen fleet from 25 to 34 vehicles
The original contract included the delivery of five hydrogen buses
MPK Poznań exercised this option at the time of signing
The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed
“This is yet another step towards green
sustainable mobility in the capital of Greater Poland
Our long-standing collaboration with MPK Poznań is a great honour for us and a testament to the trust placed in Solaris technology,” said Javier Iriarte
MPK Poznań CEO Krzysztof Dostatni added: ”Investing in our fleet is a priority for us
as it improves the comfort of public transport and reflects our commitment to environmental protection.”
However, Poznań’s public transport passengers will need to wait a little longer before seeing the new Urbino 12 hydrogen buses on the roads, as deliveries are scheduled for the end of April 2026. The vehicles will complement the city’s existing fleet of 25 hydrogen buses
MPK Poznań is also investing in battery-electric buses
the total fleet consists of around 330 vehicles
meaning locally emission-free models currently account for 25 per cent of the fleet
With the arrival of the newly ordered hydrogen and battery-electric buses—though specific details on additional BEVs have not been disclosed—this share is expected to rise above 30 per cent
“The introduction of new vehicles means phasing out the least eco-friendly ones,” Dostatni stated

Beyond.pl claimed the site in Poznan is the only multi-tier data centre in the EU to have received an ANSI/TIA-942 Rated 4 certification and EN 50600 Class 4 standard
The site is conveniently located between Berlin and Warsaw — providing users with optimal data transfer times between the two capital cities and other European cities such as Prague
The site expansion will leverage a combination of cooling technologies to prevent power and water losses
and rear door cooling solutions — each of which can be tailored to a customer’s desired configurations
The site will also be powered by 100% renewable energy
“We now have the option of arranging entire buildings as well as individual data halls according to customer requirements," said Piotr Kowalski
"Our differentiator is flexibility in the choice of solutions
which simultaneously means technological freedom for customers."
“Our knowledge of the technologies available on the market and our experience to date positions us perfectly for high-quality service delivery of colocation of high-density solutions.”

A waste heat recovery solution will be added to Beyond’s site in Poznan, which is set to be expanded from 86MW to 150MW to support increased AI workloads
to transfer excess heat as low-emission energy for residential
and industrial buildings in the Polish city
The companies signed a letter of intent to conduct feasibility studies aimed at reusing thermal energy produced by data centres — providing approximately 30 MW in the project’s 1st phase
Veolia and Beyond.pl suggested the new heat source would reduce CO2 emissions from by approximately 52,500 tons annually while also reducing water requirements by approximately 76,500 cubic meters annually
The partnership is the first heat recovery initiative of such scale in Poland between a data centre and a district heating company
“We are committed to taking real actions when it comes to environmental protection
as evidenced by the newly established collaboration between Veolia and Beyond.pl
which will bring positive ecological and social effects for the residents of Poznan,” said Luiz Hanania
a by-product of data processing will reduce fossil fuel consumption
This means that Poznan’s district heating network will in a greater proportion be powered by green energy.”
Beyond’s partnership with Veolia comes as it plans to scale up its Data Centre 2 site in Poznan
enabling it to support intense AI workloads
“Thanks to ongoing initiatives and investments
Beyond.pl is today one of the lowest-emission data centre service providers in the country and the region,” said Wojciech Stramski
“We use 100% renewable energy to power our data centre facilities
while concurrently implementing real actions that combine [the] highest-quality data centre security with a focus on resources and environmental care
“The collaboration between Beyond.pl and Veolia Energia Poznan on heat recovery is a unique project in the region and a bold step towards promoting decarbonization efforts in Poland
which will tangibly benefit Poznan’s residents.”
