Poland — “Poland has never been a popular immigration destination for Russians,” says Alexandr Menyukov
an international group supporting Russian wartime emigres and activists.
because in Russian propagandists’ list of enemies Poland ranks second after the U.S
It even seems like Russia is fighting the war not against Ukraine
The Moscow Times met with Menyukov and his colleague Oleg Rodin at Kovcheg’s community space in the Praga Północ neighborhood
which in the 1990s had a reputation as Warsaw’s most dangerous area but is now one of its fastest-gentrifying districts.
A hub for the city’s small community of young Russian exiles to participate in Polish-language-learning groups and political roundtables
seems like a seamless fit for Praga Północ where new hipster bars
craft studios and community spaces seemingly pop up every day.
“I haven’t experienced any Russophobia here
the former head of Nizhny Novgorod office of the opposition Yabloko party who fled Russia at the outset of the invasion of Ukraine when his collection of signatures for an anti-war petition nearly landed him in prison.
“I went on a date with a Ukrainian woman from Bucha here once and all throughout it I heard that the only good Russians are dead Russians,” Rodin recalled
dubbing the encounter “understandable,” but “still unpleasant.”
“I haven't had any situations like that since then
I interacted with other Ukrainians who spoke Ukrainian
while I spoke Russian…and everything was fine between us in that regard,” Rodin added
I haven't experienced any discrimination from them either.”
The Russian emigre community in Poland — one of the most populous EU member states with over 36 million residents — makes up a tiny share of the population
In comparison, some 310,000 Belarusian citizens reside in Poland along with 960,000 Ukrainian citizens who fled here from Russia’s invasion
had no influence on Poland’s policy for issuing humanitarian visas to political refugees
which remains one of the most liberal in the EU
putting the country among the top most desirable destinations for people fleeing persecution from authoritarian governments
including Russian nationals who spoke with The Moscow Times.
“We don’t feel Russophobia because we are not Russians,” joked Batlay Matenov
an ethnic Buryat journalist from Russia’s Far East republic of Buryatia who moved to Warsaw nearly two years ago
He and his wife Liliya Mongush, a native of Russia’s Siberian republic of Tyva, run the award-winning media platform Asians of Russia
a project known for its firm anti-war stance and dedication to shedding light on Indigenous Asian peoples of Russia.
“Poles really helped us when we just arrived,” Mongush explained
“We never felt anything resembling the so-called Russophobia
but mostly because we didn’t have a residency permit.”
Mongush says the family did not experience blatant anti-Asian racism either and even found a supportive Warsaw-based community of Mongolian studies enthusiasts
a loyal fan of Tyvan folk band Huun-Huur-Tu
But Mongush and Matenov’s life in Poland hasn’t been without its rocky moments.
“Our son used to go to a Polish primary school and really liked it
but when his Ukrainian classmates found out that he is from Russia
they became afraid of him,” said Mongush
who then transferred her son to study at an online international school.
Though humanitarian visas are still possible to obtain
Russian nationals continue to run into problems when trying to prolong their stay in Poland and obtain a residence permit — the subject of an ongoing discussion between Kovcheg and Poland’s Foreign Ministry
“We believe that…humanitarian residency permits like those for Belarusians would be necessary [for Russian nationals],” explains Rodin.
Kovcheg’s members say that they were pleasantly surprised to find Polish politicians to be not only willing but proactive in engaging with Russian political exiles.
Attesting to their claims was the May visit of Russian opposition politician Yulia Navalnaya to Poland, where she met with Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski who, in turn, pledged to provide support to exiled Russian opposition activists and journalists.
“They [Polish officials] are interested in the formation of a politically engaged diaspora,” says Menyukov.
saying: “There is an opportunity for dialogue and I think the Poles are also interested in it.”
He added: “But I realize that when we fight for the rights of Russians
we must also fight for the rights of other minorities
Because they also face very significant problems here
a lot of prejudice against people from Central Asia.”

The renovated Praga apartment by Mistovia (see more here) did not undergo extensive layout changes; instead
the team followed a program dictated by several dominant ‘cubes’
each holding a specific function accentuated using various patterns of veneer or color
This playful puzzle of bold accents and geometric forms is met by a neutral and uniform backdrop of white walls and light gray micro cement floors
and glass bricks also figured on the owner’s wish list
which Mistovia readily incorporated throughout the space
the apartment’s high-ceiling rooms helped brighten the design
Marcin says: ‘Although we considered numerous options
we ended up connecting the small kitchen with the living room
We also decided to leave the bathroom in the same spot and connect the utility room with the dressing room and the bedroom.’ Starting with the kitchen area
a piece of tall built-in furniture made of American walnut burl constitutes the main feature
The organic pattern steadily contrasts with the smooth surface of brushed steel cabinets and the rigorous geometry of simple white tiles lining part of the wall.
45 sqm apartment in Warsaw renovated by Mistovia using Memphis-inspired designs
The second spatial ‘accent’ or cube welcomes guests upon entering the apartment
After crossing the portal finished with Brazilian green marble
but later refined by post-modernist Ettore Sottsass
It houses a wardrobe finished with an impressive veneer designed by Sottsass in 1985
The pink terrazzo round table and the vintage oblong chairs designed by Bruno Rey pay homage to the Memphis Group aesthetics
a steel door in the closet leads to Paulina’s bedroom
dominated by a purple shade mixed with navy accents (porcelain sconces and Italian tiles on the bed’s headboard)
concealed by white built-in furniture — effectively separating the living area from the private part of the home
A small bathroom constitutes the last element of this elaborate puzzle
reduced to the necessary minimum while still showing off unconventional solutions
Following Paulina’s material request
a curved wall made of glass bricks allows sunlight to filter in
A custom-designed bathroom cabinet shaped like a chest of drawers on squat legs in an intense shade of cobalt stands out against the raw pool tiles chosen by designers from Mistovia
one could notice that the cabinet features the same veneer as the built-in furniture in the kitchen and that the countertop holds the same green marble adorning the front door’s portal
Completing the post-modernist bathroom is a pink lamp by Polish brand Lexavala and 3D mirror panes reflecting and multiplying bold patterns at different angles
combining glass bricks and bright-green accent
kitchen space with a built-in furniture piece made of American walnut burl
white tiles and 3D mirror panes pair up in the bathroom

A court in Poland yesterday dismissed a case against an anti-LGBT activist who said that gay couples want to adopt children in order to rape them
She had argued that the case should be thrown out because the complainants could not prove they were gay
In a session closed to the media and public due to coronavirus restrictions, the court considered the case against Kaja Godek, who is best known as the force behind efforts to ban abortion
when tackling paedophilia in the Catholic church
people “should concentrate on curbing the influence of the homolobby”
“Pederasty is a first step towards pedophilia,” she told Polsat News
— PolsatNews.pl (@PolsatNewsPL) May 19, 2019
seven men sued her for criminal defamation
which carries a prison sentence of up to one year
But Godek’s lawyer argued that the case should be dismissed because the complainants could not prove they are gay
“They have to prove their connection to my statement,” Godek told Polsat this week
I don’t know how to prove you are gay
a judge at the District Court for Warsaw Praga-Północ
She also found that there was no evidence that Godek directly knew the people who accused her of defaming them
The case was held without the public or media present due to coronavirus restrictions
Polish court rules campaign linking LGBT and paedophilia is “informative and educational”
A representative of the Centre for Monitoring Racist and Xenophobic Activities
called the judge’s decision “absurd and outrageous”
He promised that an appeal would be lodged against the ruling
and that they would even pursue the case up to the European Court of Human Rights
“This ruling shows that LGBT people have virtually no way to defend their dignity anymore,” said Dulkowski
who argued that there are earlier rulings which show that someone does not have to know individual members of a group to have criminally defamed them
celebrated her victory as “confirming freedom of speech”
proves that pointing to the relationship between paedophilia and homosexuality is not a crime
The LGBT community would like to ensure that the illnesses they exhibit are only glorified and affirmed
The court’s decision shows that sexual preferences can also be criticised
Godek is well known for her anti-LGBT activism, which has resulted in her being banned from Twitter. Last year, she stood as a candidate for the far-right Confederation party. She has also become the face of Poland’s movement to ban abortion and sex education in schools
On the same day as the ruling in Godek’s case, prosecutors in the same Warsaw-Praga District decided to bring charges against a manager at IKEA for violating the religious rights of an employee
who was last year fired for making homophobic remarks
including quoting biblical passages suggesting that gay people deserve to be killed
Prosecutors charge IKEA manager in Poland who fired employee for homophobic messages
Earlier this year, a court in Wrocław dismissed a lawsuit against the organisers of an anti-LGBT campaign that portrays homosexuals as paedophiles. The judge found that the activity had an “informative”
“educational” purpose and helped raise awareness of paedophilia
Poland was ranked as the worst place in the European Union for LGBT people
as well as hostility stoked by the ruling party and church

Vodka has its own museum, opening tomorrow (June 12) in Warsaw, Poland. The Polish Vodka Museum claims to be the world’s first and only place dedicated to “honouring and celebrating the rich and centuries long tradition of crafting Polish vodka”.
The museum is said to be devoted to Poland’s national alcoholic drink and is housed in the revitalised Koneser Praga Center in Warsaw.
The Polish Vodka Museum is said to be a ‘must see’ for vodka enthusiasts and connoisseurs featuring five thematic exhibitions and a screening room.
The museum will take visitors will learn about the history of vodka commencing with a screening of a film retelling the history of vodka, the museum also includes modern multimedia installations and is home to the Vodka Academy Bar.
In the bar visitors will be treated to a tasting and an educational workshop on the principles of serving Polish vodka and how to pair it with food.
The bar located beside the museum is said to serve vodka-based cocktails. The museum is located in the heart of Warsaw’s traditional vodka industry, in a 19th century historic distillation and rectification plant in the regenerated Praga-Północ district.
The museum is housed in the Warsaw Vodka Factory ‘Koneser’, neo-Gothic buildings which were once home to Polish vodka brands Luksusowa and Wyborowa.
Polish Vodka Foundation CEO Andrzej Szumowski, said: “Polish vodka is inseparable from Polish culture and customs and it is a staple export celebrated around the world for its renowned and exquisite flavour and superior quality. Visitors to the museum can learn about the centuries-long and rich history, tradition and production methods of Polish vodka.
“During educational workshops on Polish vodka, visitors will have the opportunity to discover various flavours and aromas of Polish vodkas made from traditional Polish cereals and potatoes.” Work on the Polish Vodka Museum began four years ago and the project was supported with more than €560,000 from EU funds.
The Polish Vodka Museum is open daily, to adults only. Admission tickets include a voucher for a Polish vodka tasting.

an artist whose sculptures can be found across the city
Though Warsaw had previously been neglected in favour of its enchanting
visitors are now flocking to Poland’s capital too
Culture Trip spoke with Sułek about his views on what makes each neighbourhood and area of Warsaw special
One of Sułek’s most famous sculptures is his City of Angels – cheery characters perched on a stone slab – and these flank the entrance to one of Praga Północ’s liveliest areas
“Most of the hidden gems are located in Praga district
a place where social and artistic life is thriving,” says Sułek – and at its heart is one of the oldest streets in Warsaw
“This is one of the most popular streets of all in Praga,” Sułek adds
He suggests visiting the Stara Praga café
The whole area is a treasure trove of history and Sułek recommends a walk around Praga Północ to see the “beautiful but forgotten courtyards” of the old tenement houses
“It is seen as a kind of an open-air museum,” he says
Sułek recommends heading to Koneser Square – an area with a completely different vibe to the classic Ząbkowska
which is “located in the very heart of Praga”
it’s “a very modern centre of culture and leisure”
an homage to one of Poland’s best-loved products
housed inside a neo-Gothic building which used to be the location of a vodka factory
Head to nearby Galeria Wileńska for a spot of shopping
or take a stroll through Park Praski to the Warsaw Zoo
Sułek also recommends visitors wander to the southern district of Praga
On the border between Praga Północ and Praga Południe lies Warszawa Wschodnia – Warsaw’s Eastern Railway station – which Sułek says is a prime example of communist architecture in the city
He suggests exploring the area where the two districts merge
where you can see the longest communist residential building in Warsaw – affectionately dubbed Dachshund – which stretches into the distance at a bewildering 508m (1,667ft) long

it’s worth a walk down Aleja Zieleniecka towards the National Stadium
Though the stadium itself hosts impressive events
here you’ll also find some of Warsaw’s popular beaches
which was first used in the interwar period
Close by is the glamorous Saska Kępa – a host of 1920s buildings
where you can enjoy a bite to eat in cosy cafés and restaurants
Heading east is the industrial-looking Soho Factory. Sułek recommends a tour of this area, which includes the ever-instagrammable Neon Museum
The museum helps to save and restore the inventive neon signs which once decorated the city
and proves a popular attraction with visitors
After you’ve explored Warsaw’s neon history
“treat yourselves with a good dinner at the restaurant Warszawa Wschodnia
which is located in an old factory building.” The restaurant
and diners sit at a giant table in front of the kitchen
where they can watch their meals being prepared
which borders the river Vistula on the western side of the city
is rapidly becoming one of most attractive and happening places to visit in Warsaw
Sułek describes it as a “thriving neighbourhood with many modern and trendy places”
A selection of new museums have popped up here in recent years
and the verdant Warsaw University Library – where you can buy an ice cream or a coffee to take up to its free rooftop garden
Sułek also recommends the newly opened Elektrownia Powiśle
“a complex for entertainment and business created in the place where the old power station once stood”
Another of Warsaw’s most famous attractions
peach-coloured townhouses and charming cobblestone streets
But the attractions are not just to be found in the main square
“Going in the direction of the Old Town you can stop by at Pawilony,” says Sułek
This is a collection of bars just off Nowy Świat
Chmielna Street also boasts charming restaurants and bakeries
Try OKIENKO for some perfectly golden fries
before popping next door to the classic Cukiernia Pawłowicz for a dainty rose doughnut
Centrum is the location of one of Warsaw’s most well-known buildings
from which you can take in a view across the whole city
he Złote Tarasy shopping mall – or the Bubble Mall – is close by with its distinctive undulating glass roof
while the area is also home to numerous museums and cultural institutions
there is an interesting modern building,” says Sułek
studded with windows – is also packed with history
as the former centre of the Communist party
it’s home to the Banking and Finance Centre and is buzzing with life
“In the social realist courtyard there is a fountain
Sułek describes Warsaw as “a unique combination of modernity and tradition
built on rubble from scratch,” and there’s no better example of this than Muranów
which used to be inhabited by much of the city’s Jewish population
and is now home to brooding Communist-era housing blocks
Sułek recommends visiting the award-winning POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews – a vast testament to the rich history of the Jewish community in Poland

Polish studio Mistovia breathes new life into a 1950s apartment in Warsaw's Praga Północ neighbourhood
crafting an exceptional fusion of textures and styles
nestled within a mid-century estate designed by architects Jerzy Gieysztor and Jerzy Kumelowski
has been reinvented into a captivating space that marries walnut burl
The interior renovation unfolds as an intricate puzzle of contrasting patterns
with each distinct "cube" within the apartment serving a specific purpose
further accentuated through veneer and colour
an homage to Ettore Sottsass' 1980s design
The connection between the kitchen and lounge creates a fluid open-plan arrangement
juxtaposing distinctive pieces like the molten-looking Plopp stool and misshapen vase against floor-to-ceiling walnut-burl cabinets
forming chunky black-and-white legs for a breakfast bar and a striking burnt-orange dining table
Micro cement flooring and textured walls provide a versatile backdrop for geometric forms and bold patterns
capturing a balanced harmony of design elements
The bathroom mirrors the apartment's flair
featuring glass-brick walls and monochrome tiles arranged in a grid pattern
A standout sink supported by cobalt-blue legs and a tortoiseshell cabinet crowned with a triptych mirror create an arresting visual composition
The singular bedroom boasts a purple wardrobe that complements the rectilinear marble headboard
aligning harmoniously with the home's boxy geometry
This transformation embodies the artful juxtaposition of materials
culminating in a living space that is a testament to Mistovia's design prowess
this apartment redesign stands as a testament to Warsaw's creative energy

UPDATE 9TH JUNE: CD Projekt Red has reported the theft as a crime in Poland
"District Public Prosecutor's Office for Warsaw (Praga Północ) received an offence notification from CD Projekt Red," prosecutor Renata Mazur said - translation provided by Eurogamer Poland
ORIGINAL STORY 8TH JUNE: The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red has had data from its upcoming sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077 stolen and held for ransom
The Polish developer has issued a statement explaining the situation
remaining firm that it will not give into the thief's (or thieves) demands
It also noted that the stolen files are quite old and aren't representative of how the final game will look
it would prefer fans not look at the plundered documents should they pop up online
Here's the studio's statement in full:
"An unidentified individual or individuals have just informed us they are in possession of a few internal files belonging to CD Projekt Red
Among them are documents connected to early designs for the upcoming game
the files will be released to the general public
We will not be giving in to the demands of the individual or individuals that have contacted us
which might eventually lead to the files being published online
The appropriate legal authorities will be informed about the situation
The documents are old and largely unrepresentative of the current vision for the game
if you're looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077
it would be best for you to avoid any information not coming directly from CD Projekt Red
you will hear about Cyberpunk 2077 from us - officially
It's an odd situation, but not an unheard of one. Popular video streaming service Netflix recently laid victim to such theft when season five of Orange is the New Black was stolen by a hacker who threatened to release the impending episodes if their demands weren't met
They weren't and allegedly the episodes were released in shadier corners of the web
Arguably the most high profile case of a video game getting stolen while in development was when Half-Life 2's source code leaked shortly before the game's scheduled release
costing developer Valve a ton of money and delaying the much anticipated sequel's launch by several months
That case was a bit different though, in that the culprit never blackmailed Valve and they didn't mean for the stolen goods to go public. In fact, they were only caught because they came forward and apologised, then asked Valve for a job in its security department. We caught up with the criminal behind that caper - who was remarkably only a teenager at the time - back in 2011 and they explained the strange
twisty tale of how they inadvertently pulled off perhaps the industry's biggest heist

The area of Norblin Factory in Warsaw’s Wola district
whose revitalization has been recently completed
The author of the work depicted in the mural is Tytus Brzozowski – a well-known painter
architect and lover of Warsaw’s history and architecture
on one of the underground levels of Norblin Factory (-2)
Tytus Brzozowski is a watercolorist and architect who is fascinated by cities – their transformations
The artist has a special artistic fondness for the capital
– I love bustling and lively cities
and this is what Warsaw is like in my painting
The mural’s design was based on the piece I painted in September 2016
inspired by the changes that began to happen at the Norblin Factory
One of the reasons why I am so fascinated by the capital of Poland is the pace at which our city is transforming
Post-industrial Wola district is becoming the center of changes going at an unprecedented pace
I was particularly interested in Norblin because of the emphasis placed here on a public space and incorporating old industrial architecture into the urban tissue
full of services and attractions for everyone and at any time – says Tytus Brzozowski – a painter
architect and author of the painting being the basis of the new mural at Norblin Factory
Tytus Brzozowski is famous for his numerous artistic projects made in urban space
His large-format works can be found on the walls of Warsaw buildings
in such areas as Wola (the seat of ZDM – the Public Roads Authority of Wola)
The artist’s works also decorate the interiors of many companies and institutions
including hotel Novotel in Poznań or Polish Development Fund (PFR) in Warsaw’s “Cedet” building
Brzozowski is an awarded artist – his paintings have been exhibited worldwide
for example during the Polish Culture Season in Ningbo
as well as at the prestigious ARTLIFE festival in Moscow
The Polish Tourist Organization also promotes our country at international fairs with the artist’s works
conducts interesting and inspiring lectures on the architecture and history of Warsaw
The main theme of the latest mural at the Norblin Factory is Warsaw itself
but shown in an original Brzozowski’s manner
he often juxtaposes figures of buildings and people
cheerful scenes on the border of reality and fantasy
and colorful passers-by appear in the most uncommon places – e.g
His artistic style is inspired mostly by surrealism and the paintings by Pieter Bruegel
– I decided to paint the old factory buildings
supplementing the surroundings with the roofs of the tenement houses that were once neighboring with Norblin
I wanted to integrate the outbreak of urban modernity into this scene and present a place full of people and activities
which has many years of experience in creating large-format wall paintings
is responsible for the implementation of the mural
One of their most characteristic works are for example the mural designed by Tytus Brzozowski
or a series of murals on the wall of the tenement house at ul
presenting Polish artists of the young generation
made in cooperation with Spotify music company
The wall painting in Norblin Factory is created using Winsor & Newton paints and will be protected against moisture
dirt and minor abrasions with a special varnish
This is another work of this type at Norblin Factory
as it is the destination that embedded art in its DNA
The first mural painted there is located on the wall of the building of the former chemical laboratory at the intersection of Prosta and Żelazna Streets
It is based on the painting “Norblin Factory” by Edward Dwurnik – an outstanding painter and graphic artist
associated with Warsaw throughout his career
largest work of art on the 8-meter wall of one of the underground levels
This work is dedicated especially to the Norblin Factory
– It is an extremely emotional moment for us when our activities in the Norblin Factory become a real inspiration for artists and result in the creation of new works
We are glad that the works of such a renowned artist as Tytus Brzozowski will decorate the interior of the Factory and will make the interaction with culture start as soon as you arrive on its premises
Our mission is to create a lively destination for meetings and entertainment here
whose main distinguishing feature will be the culture
This is why we decided to offer not only a broad selection of unique places – galleries
boutique cinemas or museums – but also to include art in less obvious spaces
anyone who wanders the streets and interiors of the factory will be able to experience art directly
encountering artistic projects at every turn – sums up Kinga Nowakowska
operational director and member of the management board of the Capital Park Group

the population of Warsaw will increase to 2.044 million inhabitants over the next few years
Łukasz Kubiak and Ewa Korcelli-Olejniczak - have prepared the Demographic Forecast for Warsaw
in which they try to predict the dynamics of population changes in the Polish capital over the next 30 years
Based on the data provided by Orange Polska
1.978 million inhabitants have been adopted as the starting point for the forecast
including the population of 213,000 unregistered people living in Warsaw
scientists estimate that the population in 2030 will be 1.98-2.13 million
and in 2050 – 1.78- 2.25 million inhabitants (including the current population of unregistered residents)
Warsaw will reach its maximum population already in 2028
The situation will not be the same in all districts of the capital – depopulation will mainly affect downtown districts
Regardless of the assumptions made in two districts – Śródmieście and Praga Północ – scientists predict a decline in population compared to 2018
there are currently no potential sources of a strong increase in the population of Warsaw in the future
"This is due to both the depletion of traditional source regions of migrants and the level of fertility in the city
despite relatively high values compared to other Polish cities
does not provide the so-called simple replacement of generations," the scientists stated
"Population growth could only take place in the case of much stronger immigration than it is now (several times greater inflow)
both due to a greater internal drain (at the expense of other cities in the country) and an inflow from abroad," they added
