Text in the image read: "In Poland bicycle paths glow at the night which are charged by the sun." Another Facebook post featuring a similar image, which had garnered more than 118,000 reactions as of this writing, was shared on Sept. 24, while another said the path was located in the town of Pruszków Elsewhere, a Reddit user who shared a different image said there was one such path in Poland: "There is a bicycle path in Poland that is solar-powered and glows in the dark."  There is a bicycle path in Poland that is solar-powered and glows in the dark.byu/Sea_Land_1944 inDamnthatsinteresting the rumors included a mixture of true and false information presented in various forms we have elected not to provide a rating in this article likely AI-generated image (mentioned first above) contributed to the confusion It is located near Lidzbark Warmiński in the Mazury region Some social media posts incorrectly claimed it was in Pruszków, near the capital, Warsaw. This confusion likely arose from the fact that the path was designed by the TPA company, which is based in Pruszków Dr. Igor Ruttmar, CEO of TPA, explained in an interview with Gazeta Olsztyńska that the material used to create the path "is capable of emitting light for over 10 hours," meaning that light energy stored during the day makes it glow at night "This effect is solely due to the properties of the aggregate used without the need for additional energy sources For the construction of the path near Lidzbark Warmiński we chose blue-glowing phosphors to maintain consistency with the Masurian landscape," he added The path is 100 meters long and not a part of any major urban or national cycling infrastructure Some reviews and photos of the area were uploaded to Google Maps in 2023. However, Google Maps imagery from 2012-13 predates its creation meaning it neither shows the path as it was in 2016 nor provides any indication of its current state in 2025 TPA said via email that the path is operational but "due to the defective execution by our predecessors of the asphalt layers on which we built the path (among other things vegetation began to grow through the asphalt) we were forced to carry out renovation in 2022." The story about the glowing bicycle path was frequently shared alongside an image that did not depict the actual path displays several signs of being artificially created likely through digital manipulation or AI generation the stars and constellations depicted on the path look highly stylized and artificial the blue glow of the bike path is overly vibrant and evenly distributed which is not typical of real-life glowing materials genuine photographs of the bike path in question do exist with the one displayed below on the right being the most well-known example Other claims regarding bikes we have investigated in the past include a rumor that a photograph showed a "young Bill Gates" riding a bicycle in the 1970s and a story about a 66-year-old Swedish man who won a 1,800-kilometer (1,118-mile) bike race despite being too old to enter it. - YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu38SHyj-XY. customers in key sectors efficiently and sustainably.” Last month, Smurfit Kappa announced an investment of €40m ($47.8m) in its facility in Mold Steve Wojciechowski is mostly associated with two basketball teams first as a tenacious point guard in the 1990s and then as an assistant for 15 years under Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski He’s forging a new legacy at Marquette where he is preparing for his fifth season as the Golden Eagles’ head coach But there’s a little-known chapter in Wojciechowski’s basketball story: A stint as a professional player in the Polish Basketball League It’s overlooked because his pro career did not last very long and Yet it’s a crucial experience that helped form the 42-year-old Wojciechowski’s outlook on life and basketball The opportunity to play in Poland was first broached to Wojciechowski at the 1998 Final Four in San Antonio The guard was capping his stellar collegiate career by participating in the three-point shootout he was also casting about for professional opportunities Every Final Four teems with coaches and agents making it a big weekend for the basketball job market Mike McCollow had kicked around in the minor-league hoops hinterlands including a job as assistant coach under Flip Saunders for the 1992 Continental Basketball Association champion La Crosse Catbirds His gig in 1998 was as the head coach of the Poland Basketball League team Pekaes in the industrial town of Pruszkow “They were sort of the Green Bay Packers of Polish basketball,” McCollow said “They were a small town outside of Warsaw McCollow admired Wojciechowski at Duke and the guard’s Polish surname got the wheels spinning in McCollow’s mind If Pekaes could prove Wojciechowski’s Polish heritage he could play as a local and not count as one of two foreign imports allowed per roster So McCollow tracked down Wojciechowski in San Antonio and made his pitch The guard was intrigued but unsure of what his first step should be as a professional he had strong showings at draft showcases like the Portsmouth Invitational and Desert Classic The NBA still wasn’t likely in the cards for the 5-foot-10 fireplug because that season the NBA was in a lockout was to go overseas,” Wojciechowski said “There were no guarantees I was going to get invited to a training camp or anything I think I have a realistic view of myself." I felt like there was other things I was passionate about that I could do if basketball wasn’t going to be a full-fledged career I didn’t want to chase it for chasing-it’s sake.” LEAP OF FAITHWojciechowski decided McCollow’s offer was his best one he boarded a flight for his first-ever trip to Poland Wojciechowski was a bundle of nerves on the 10-hour commute to his first job The world was less connected in the late 1990s cellphones were not prevalent and Internet access was not widespread He didn't speak the language and knew nothing about the team there is anxiety,” Wojciechowski said.  “So to say I was sitting on a plane to Poland and feeling totally calm It was for the game that I loved but still I was leaving family and friends I was leaving environments that were comfortable.” Nobody from Pekaes was there to pick him up at baggage claim a harbinger that operations at the club would not be running smoothly “I’m sitting there waiting there for like an hour,” Wojciechowski said ‘What in the heck is going on here?’ “I remember calling my agent and finally the Polish GM came to pick me up and drove me to our townhouse.” Wojciechowski lived with former Texas Christian sharpshooter Mike Jones and his girlfriend He had a mattress on the floor and that was about it “He was awesome,” Wojciechowski said of Jones You learn to lean on someone when you’re in a situation where you don’t know anybody else and you’re going through something for the first time.” It opened Wojciechowski's eyes to how good basketball was around the world "Those guys knew how to play," Wojciechowski said Wojciechowski was waiting on his passport situation to be resolved so he mostly played in practices and a few games with Pekaes’ developmental team He also had a lot of time to kill in a foreign land “It wasn’t like I was playing Fortnite or FaceTime-ing home,” Wojciechowski said The only American show we got was Jay Leno at midnight Poland time That was how I’d stay connected to the States.” He also taught himself to drive a stick-shift car that the team had provided “There was a little grocery store parking lot probably three miles away from the townhouse,” he said It’d take me 40 minutes and I’d hear a lot honks." Pekaes’ other American was Richard Dumas Dumas looked like a sure-fire NBA superstar averaging 15.8 points per game for the Phoenix Suns as a rookie and going toe-to-toe with the Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in the NBA Finals Dumas was suspended by the NBA the next season for substance abuse and his career spiraled McCollow had coached Dumas as an Oklahoma State assistant McCollow had gotten updates on the fallen star from his friend Bill Self was working out with Golden Hurricane players after squandering several overseas chances “We always knew Richard as a talent but also as a troubled soul as well,” McCollow said you have that moment when you’re trying to maximize a situation and find that one player the diamond in the rough that can change your fortunes.” McCollow said Dumas dominated his first practice with Pekaes It was all downhill after that as Dumas kept battling his demons “He was on his last legs,” Wojciechowski said every once in a while there would be a possession where he’d do something and it was like Imagine him if he took care of himself.’ You knew he’d been up most of the night He wore it where everybody knew he wasn’t taking care of himself take two dribbles from 24 feet and just tomahawk a dunk on top of two seven-foot Polish guys and it’d be like ‘Oh my God When Dumas failed to show up for games or was in no condition to play Wojciechowski got to suit up for the club's top team The guard endeared himself to teammates and fans “They loved him,” McCollow said The quest to have Wojciechowski play as a local was going nowhere His great-grandparents had left the old country behind when they moved to America Poland didn’t have great historical records thanks to wars and government instability it probably would have happened,” Wojciechowski joked The team even floated the idea of Wojciechowski marrying a local woman There also was the matter of the Americans not getting their paychecks ‘Am I going to get paid?’ ‘Yes “I remember one day getting a stack of cash I just had a wad of cash that I hid in some high-top Doc Martens in my bedroom.” The PBL games also were a long way from Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium A fog of cigarette smoke often gathered over the court Wojciechowski and Jones were bemused at their situation “We were both coming from good college experiences,” Wojciechowski said “There were days when we were looking at each other and saying we were delivered the news that we lost our sponsor,” McCollow said “The Russian ruble was collapsing and was closely tied to the Polish economy including our biggest sponsor which was a Russian trucking company.” “It was the inconsistency after a few months,” Wojciechowski said And the hunt for the passport was going nowhere.” After just over three months and only four games with Pekaes’ senior team Wojciechowski’s professional playing career was over Wojciechowski flew to his home state of Maryland He soon found himself drawn back to Durham working for Duke’s investment organization and as an analyst for Blue Devils games Duke assistant Quin Snyder became head coach at Missouri and Krzyzewski asked Wojciechowski to join his staff Wojciechowski was back in an environment that made sense He never had to worry about getting his paychecks In his second season as an assistant coach the Blue Devils won a national championship “It really worked out,” Wojciechowski said “Was I glad that had to give up competitive basketball But sometimes the right decision isn’t the easiest decision I started a career that’s allowed me to do some pretty cool things.” He now uses his time in Poland as a lesson to players like former Golden Eagles guard Andrew Rowsey it’s going to be hard,' ” Wojciechowski said But it’s going to be harder than you think Whether that’s you acclimating to living far away from the people you care about most or the realization that ‘Hey basketball is pretty darn good here.’ “And that it’s not going to be like it was in college where there’s safety nets and your buddies are always around You relay those experiences to them.” Wojciechowski and McCollow ran into each other at the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017 They shook their heads and laughed at their brief time together “When you’re in those kind of situations with people you kind of have a bond forever,” McCollow said Wojciechowski looks back at his brief professional career as part of a bigger narrative “I had amazing experiences as a basketball player whether that’s going 13-18 my freshman year and my head coach (Krzyzewski) leaves a third of the way through the season (for back surgery),” he said “To being a backup my sophomore year to being team MVP my junior year to being all-ACC and honorable mention All-American my senior year To going to a faraway land and having pretty much everything go wrong that could go wrong “So if a guy’s not getting in a game I know what it’s like to walk into a gym and get booed by 20,000 people “This was one in a pile of experiences that you go through that at times you can look to and help guys as they go through their own thing." A banner was displayed by football fans in Poland declaring a stadium an LGBTQ+ ‘free zone’ (Sasza Witek) A football club in Poland’s capital has condemned an “LGBT-free zone” banner which was displayed during a match The inflammatory banner appeared during I liga Polonia Warszawa’s home game with Znicz Pruszków at the Kazimierz Sosnkowski Stadium in Warsaw last week placed by a supporters’ group called Ultras Enigma Driven by an increase in anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment by the ruling Law and Justice party the infamous zones began appearing in 2019 when more than 100 municipalities in the country declared themselves free of “LGBT ideology” with the authorities banning what they viewed as the promotion of queer rights and equality – labelled homopropaganda In 2022, a top Polish appeals court ruled that four of the zones must be abolished, with the final one scrapped earlier this year Polonia Warszawa released a statement regarding the banner at the game in which it strongly condemned any form of discrimination “There is not and never will be consent to such behaviour at our stadium. Our mission is to create a friendly and safe place for all supporters, regardless of their origin, skin colour, religion or sexual orientation,” the club said “The slogan placed on a banner by a group of our supporters during a match against Znicz Pruszków is completely contrary to our values.” The club went on to say it took “immediate action to identify those responsible for displaying the banner” and the individuals were given two-year stadium bans which “sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated” The statement concluded: “We would also like to emphasise that we will take all possible steps in the future to prevent similar incidents from occurring and to ensure that our stadium remains open to all those wishing to experience football emotions in a cultured atmosphere.” In response, Ultras Enigma released their own statement, taking aim at the wording of the club violation under which they were banned, the Law on Security of Mass Events which states they committed a prohibited act such as “preaching and posting slogans with racist content” The statement read: “Protecting our children and taking care of the fate of future generations of Poles is not racism This is an expression of the greatest concern for the health and mental condition of our society We will not be intimidated and we will use our constitutional law: freedom of speech and possessions guaranteed in it.” The group labelled the bans an “attempt to blackmail and impose the owner’s harmful worldview” and went on to describe LGBTQ+ rights and equality as the “promotion of deviation which often lead to serious mental illness and the mutilation of their bodies by children who are most vulnerable to this extreme ideology.” They went on to threaten legal action to reverse the bans adding there “should be a total ban on the promotion of LGBT who was at the football match and reported the banner to club officials I posted a comment on Facebook under Polonia’s post where I asked whether the club should definitely follow this path several people wrote comments criticising the banner I also received information from fans from the stand opposite that they noticed the banner and were angry at it.” a Young Left co-ordinator and law student at the University of Warsaw told PinkNews that these sorts of banners “don’t appear very often at football matches in Poland but from time to time incidents like this occur” He continued: “I think it is worth mentioning that Polonia Warszawa always state that the club is LGBT-friendly and they support LGBT people they use [the] slogan ‘together beyond divisions’ not every Polonia Warszawa fan is that tolerant.” and remember to keep the conversation respectful About us Contact us Advertise Work for us Terms and conditions
