Sunday’s poll numbers show that while Duda might now be the president of all Poland it was the small towns that put him in office Almost every city in the country backed his liberal challenger backed by the rightwing populists from Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) Duda won in only four of Poland’s 30 biggest cities and in most of them he did considerably worse than five years ago In places such as Pułtusk, the PiS combination of increased government welfare spending and socially conservative rhetoric that frequently veers into outright homophobia is popular Duda got 66% of votes in Pułtusk and the surrounding countryside people have closer social connections and they are more conservative In the big cities people have become more atomised They don’t even know their neighbours,” said Henryk Kowalczyk one of the PiS MPs for the area and a former minister This comparison is far from unique to Poland, and has been referred to in some quarters as the divide between “somewheres” and “anywheres” It can be observed in support for Donald Trump and Brexit as well as in numerous countries with rightwing populist governments where residents of big cities have defied the ruling parties and elected progressive mayors where Trzaskowski himself was elected mayor in 2018 But while populists struggle to control the cities their liberal opponents have little success in the smaller towns like Pułtusk allowing governments to portray themselves as the representatives of the “real” country Partly, this is political posturing: Duda, after all, is no village boy But he has literally gone the extra mile to show his support for the provinces Duda visited every single one of Poland’s 380 districts often being the first senior politician to visit since independence three decades ago Duda’s re-election campaign was also energetic with PiS representatives holding dozens of meetings with voters Trzaskowski’s Civic Platform is barely visible in the town Many people in the town “feel more valued” because of this kind of attention a 56-year-old high school Polish literature teacher speaking at her home in front of photographs of several generations of her family who also lived in Pułtusk She noted the popularity of the 500+ programme which pays 500 złoty (£101) a month for every child and said the social conservatism of PiS also plays a part in winning support particularly given that the rural population is ageing Gorczyńska said that about 70% of her students who leave the town to go university never come back The “special celebrations” organised by PiS on public holidays were as important as political language or financial handouts in creating a sense that PiS listens to rural voters Kowalczyk used similar reasoning for the decision to hold the election night event in the town: “It was a sign that PiS and Duda are supporting the people who are not so privileged who have to struggle; for me it was a very natural thing to do,” he said said the PiS discourse about giving dignity back to the countryside is important and compared it to late 19th-century anti-modernism combined with an elite public discourse that paints the countryside as “stupid” or “backwards” has led increased receptiveness to notions of regaining dignity something he felt was under-appreciated by most people in Pułtusk “People think it’s about murderers and thieves they don’t understand that sooner or later what happens with the courts can affect them too,” he said gender and religious purity of the countryside the ‘gender monster’ and ‘LGBT+ spaces’ – these are the new qualities of Polish authoritarian populism,” said Urbańska This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Feb 17, 2022 | Society Three hospitals have launched Poland’s first regular long-haul drone delivery service which from today will begin flying between Warsaw and the towns of Pułtusk and Sochaczew After successful tests that began in autumn 2020 the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) has allowed for regular shuttles starting on 17 February The service will run along approximately 60-kilometre routes connecting the Czerniakowski hospital in Warsaw with hospitals in the Pułtusk and Sochaczew which are north and west of the capital respectively Source: PANSA The vertical take-off drones will fly at an altitude of 100 metres above the ground and travel at an airspeed of 72 kilometres/hour. Last year. drones were used on shorter distances of 7km to connect hospitals in Warsaw, including the COVID-19 field hospital at the national stadium who heads the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) coordination department at PANSA the main goal of the project is to shorten the delivery time of medical samples The drones may carry samples of blood or material for coronavirus tests TOK FM notes that Polish regulations do not provide for blood and tissue samples to be transported by unmanned vehicles and so the service may be used to transport medical equipment Only 1.5% of pharmacies sign up to Polish government’s free Covid testing scheme The company operating the flights will be responsible for their safety as well as granting the right of way to other airspace users The drones will be centrally controlled from the headquarters of the entity overseeing the flight hospital employees will be tasked with placing the medical load in a special container PANSA has appealed to users of airspace in the area to be “particularly careful” when planning and operating flights It noted in a press release that the drones would avoid landing sites and areas used by paragliders and motor gliders Polish town tests anti-smog sound cannon Main image credit: Polska Agencja Żeglugi Powietrznej Maria Wilczek is deputy editor of Notes from Poland , , Karol Nawrocki even suggested that the state security services were involved in creating the scandal , , The 1,200 square metre national symbol was unfurled on the beach in Międzyzdroje , , The proportion of Poles saying the US has a positive influence on the world has also fallen to its lowest recorded level Apr 30, 2025 | , , , That response will include “large Polish and NATO exercises in Poland” Apr 29, 2025 | , , , Those employed in Poland work on average the third-longest hours in the European Union Apr 28, 2025 | , , , , Westinghouse and Bechtel were first chosen in 2022 as partners on the 192 billion zloty ($51 billion) project please consider helping us to continue and expand it [email protected] Copyright © 2025 Notes From Poland | Design jurko studio | Code by 2sides.pl Senior Research Fellow at the Global Europe Centre ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Weronika Strzyżyńska is currently studying journalism at Goldsmiths as a Scott Trust Bursary recipient She  has written on issues immigration and Brexit for New Statesman and Prospect Agnieszka Wądołowska is managing editor of Notes from Poland She has previously worked for Gazeta.pl and Tokfm.pl and contributed to Gazeta Wyborcza ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Daniel Tilles is editor-in-chief of Notes from Poland and assistant professor of history at the Pedagogical University of Krakow He has written on Polish affairs for a wide range of publications The Independent and Dziennik Gazeta Prawna ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Stanley Bill is the founder and editor-at-large of Notes from Poland. He is also Senior Lecturer in Polish Studies and Director of the Polish Studies Programme at the University of Cambridge Stanley has spent more than ten years living in Poland He founded Notes from Poland in 2014 as a blog dedicated to personal impressions cultural analysis and political commentary He is committed to the promotion of deeper knowledge and understanding of Poland He is the Chair of the Board of the Notes from Poland Foundation ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Professor of European Studies at Oxford University ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Professor at the Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Executive Director of Taube Family Foundation ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR Associate Professor at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Science ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR ARTICLES BY THIS AUTHOR an emeritus professor of architecture in what was the School of Fine Arts and worked on the Polish Pavilion at the 1937 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris where her work was part of the contribution to the Polish entry that won the Gold Medal for Graphics She also worked for a year in Paris with famed Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier on the photomontage for the Temps Nouveaux and on a model for a stadium She earned a master’s degree in architecture from Warsaw Polytechnic Institute in 1938 She then married architect Maciej (Matthew) Nowicki she co-authored a plan for the rebuilding of Warsaw Nowicki began teaching at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.  In 1951 a year after her husband was killed in a plane crash Nowicki was hired as an associate professor in Penn’s department of architecture in what was then called the School of Fine Arts She was recruited by the school’s dean well respected for his role in the redevelopment of Philadelphia and advancing the school at Penn as a leader of the core curriculum: “Getting her was a coup; Read our Privacy notice Despite his victory in the Polish presidential elections however which reportedly had the highest turnout since the fall of communism in 1989 the narrow results of yesterday’s election show at least 50 per cent of voters don’t want to live in a society based on hate homophobia and transphobia will increasingly become normalised parts of life for many people starting with the space allotted for projects Duda announced during his election campaign the ministry of the environment started work on a plan to declare the financing of NGOs NGOs will be obliged to state that they are being financed from abroad could now be introduced in Poland against LGBT+ NGOs and their fight towards equality But the LGBT+ community are not foreign agents – we are Poles fighting for human rights and a better place to live for everybody I highlighted the struggle of the Polish LGBT+ community which has been fighting for equality for years The previous liberal government did nothing to protect us There was no push for civil unions nor marriages or anti-hate-speech laws Subjects concerning LGBT+ topics were usually labelled by liberal politicians as “substitute subjects (red herring) in public debate”; the economy taxes and highways seened far more important to them we remain not only unprotected but doomed to be used as hate campaign tools During Pride month and election time in Poland president Duda and politicians among him attacked LGBT+ minorities many times He made a campaign pledge to “defend children from LGBT+ ideology” which he has claimed could be “even more destructive” than communist ideology As LGBT+ people navigating this discriminatory system We have observed as the high number of places designated as LGBT+-free zones increase, as pushed under the 101 anti-LGBT+ resolutions created and implemented by local governments these abhorrent declarations include protecting families from LGBT+ ideology kids from "perverts" who want to introduce sex education in schools and to protect people from “soliders of political correctness” A number of these bills have been sent to court by Polish Ombudsman Adam Bodnar and still await a court decision on the practice of excluding LGBT+ people from local communities in Poland leading to the further exclusion of LGBT+ citizens from Polish society After years of leadership under Duda, Poland’s rank has plummeted to the bottom of the list in terms of LGBT+-friendly countries in the European Union, according to the latest ILGA-Europe index the European Union resolution against “LGBT-free zones'' in Poland from last year has been ignored by the Polish government Even when the EU commission issued warnings to cut funds to regions declared LGBT+-free the EU needs to go further to show Polish government that homophobia will not be tolerated as official government policy The LGBT+ struggle in Poland will continue but we won't give up. Last year we saw the largest number of Pride marches across Poland. Young people do not believe in the primitive propaganda of the Law and Justice party. The youth climate strikes, Pride parades and rainbow protests in small and big cities give us hope that young Poles will be the change we desperately need to see.
