society confined women to predefined roles
and suited only for tasks deemed ‘appropriate’ for their gender
Activities considered risky or unconventional were reserved for men
while women were expected to stay within the realm of safety and predictability
have the boundaries that once held women back
and claiming space in areas long dominated by men
Corporal Morata Murdock; Paula-Anne Porter-Jones
broadcaster and educator; and Laurie Radlin-Walker
are doing just that — navigating the world of motorcycling with confidence and skill
Being a female motorcyclist comes with unique challenges
they often sense the astonishment from male riders when they realise a woman is keeping up with them
it affects their egos,” Radlin-Walker remarked
Porter Jones shared how she enjoys the double take from male riders when she removes her helmet
revealing that they had been riding alongside a woman all along
and they realise it’s a woman!” she chuckled
noting that some male riders react competitively when they become aware that she is a woman
especially if I’m on a bigger bike than they are,” she said
Despite the moments of competition and resistance
all three women acknowledged that there are men who support and uplift female motorcyclists
The late Sergeant Uzander ‘Mackie’ McFarlane had been one such mentor for all three women in different capacities
and equal in a space that often favoured men
Murdock described her experience training under McFarlane at the police academy as life-changing
may his soul rest in peace,” she exclaimed
reminiscing about her first fall from a motorcycle after he gave her the opportunity to ride during training
riding a motorcycle does not mean sacrificing femininity
With beautifully painted long acrylic nails
she embraces her ‘hot girl’ appearance while commanding her machine
“Some men can’t believe I ride with long nails
She pointed out that women generally are fascinated by her ability to balance both worlds
proving that being a rider does not mean losing the essence of being a woman
one of the greatest joys of motorcycling is the sense of freedom it provides
it’s like you’re in a different world,” related Murdock
Radlin-Walker described it as “tunnel vision”
they acknowledged the misconceptions surrounding motorcyclists
Many people view them as reckless and irresponsible
and Porter-Jones noted that some are even outright rude to riders
“But they’re not gonna be rude to you as a police officer,” she quipped at Murdock
One undeniable reality of motorcycling is the high number of male fatalities
many of which could be prevented by wearing proper safety measures
“When we are the ones driving the motorcycle
we are usually wearing helmets,” Porter Jones pointed out
We want to keep ourselves safe and ensure that others are safe as well.”
Radlin-Walker was direct in her stance on helmets
“Yuh not a rider if yuh doh have on yuh helmet,” she said firmly
She described how dangerous it is to ride without head protection
highlighting the risk of debris hitting your face at high speeds and the potential for severe head injury in the event of a crash
Porter Jones added that ensuring a helmet is certified is just as important as wearing one
they won’t protect you the way they should.”
who is lead for the National Helmet Wearing Coalition’s communication workstream
is committed to advocating for helmet safety as a female rider
especially given the fact that she has a daughter who also rides
“One of the scariest things for me was when my daughter decided that she wanted to learn to ride and was going to take her bike to work every day,” she disclosed
The conversation around women and motorcycles is evolving
More women are riding whether as pillions or as drivers
and with that change comes a shift in perception
“All these ladies on the back of bikes with no helmets
we need to figure out how to change that narrative,” Porter Jones reflected

The 56-year-old has admitted that she has faced several challenges since entering the dance competition and her goal is to overcome them during her time on the show
“I think it’s been a long time since I’ve thought of myself as

the Jamaican woman who was knocked from her motorcycle by police personnel along Mandela Highway in St Catherine a year and a half ago
wants Jamaicans to be embolden to speak out against excesses by the security forces
Radlin was body slammed to the ground by a police officer during an arrest
Contacted by THE STAR for comment on the George Floyd-inspired riots in the United States
Radlin said that she is encouraged by the fact that people are prepared to march for justice
She wishes that Jamaicans would do likewise
"Everybody is talking about Floyd but what about the disabled woman in August Town
This type of incident is happening too often and some of us live to tell the tales while others don't," Radlin told THE STAR
The August Town woman she referenced is Susan Bogle
allegedly by soldiers who were shooting at thugs
That matter is now the subject of an investiation by the Independent Commission of Investigations
who knows what it is to be caught in the clutches of police officers
"When I heard the big man cried for his mother
I remembered my son because I know that anything can happen
The police are the law and if you should get in a situation with them
there are hardly anyone who will have your back and say that they are there for you
Everything is going to be swept under the rug and a new story comes tomorrow and your situation is forgotten," Radlin said
malicious destruction of property and resisting arrest but those were dismissed when she appeared in court

the St Catherine woman who was knocked from her motorcycle by police personnel along Mandela Highway on August 17
says last week's conviction of a policeman who was involved in the incident has reaffirmed her faith in the justice system
Corporal Owen McCleary was found guilty of assault when he appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court
"Police must understand that they are not the law," said Moroso
who was handcuffed and her motionless body dragged along the roadway by the policeman during the bizarre incident
She told THE STAR that she does not trust the police
but was quick to say that "I still have faith in the justice system"
but I knew I had to hold out until the end
because it was excessive force that was used against me," she added
who worked as a bearer at the time of the incident
said that she was driving her motorcycle when she overtook a car along Mandela Highway in St Catherine
which caused her to fall from her motorcycle on to the hot asphalt
An amateur video of the incident shows Moroso being grabbed by the throat by one of the occupants of the vehicle which hit her motorcycle
She was hurled her against a concrete median and knocked unconscious
To add to her physical and emotional scars
the police charged her with malicious destruction of property and resisting arrest
Those charges did not hold up in court and were dismissed
Moroso told THE STAR that she watched the amateur video of the incident once and cannot muster the energy to do so a second time
The picture with the police standing over me like that is horrifying and it gives me too much emotion," said Moroso
was charged following a probe by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau
