180 in-depth interviews held, 2800 arguments mapped, and 93 innovation ideas developed together with citizens. These figures alone show how dynamic the past year has been for the Rybnik360 project
the Polish light at the end of the tunnel on Europe’s path of phasing out of coal
The Rybnik360 project is part of the Just Transformation Deep Demonstration programme
together with partners from many European countries
is initiating a systems innovation approach aimed at tackling Europe’s biggest climate challenges
economic and energy-supply change means paying close attention to citizens
That is why researchers have even gone underground to hear and understand the perspectives of people from different backgrounds
Rybnik is located in the heart of the European Union’s largest coal region
which today faces the challenge of the energy transition and struggles with enormous air pollution
In the difficult process of shifting away from economic
where different stakeholder groups have different and often conflicting interests and expectations
it is crucial to find ways to become one of the successful transition cities
It is also crucial to avoid the dangers of shrinkage and economic collapse of the city
together with many stakeholders and Climate KIC
have decided to take up this challenge and design a prosperous city that is resilient to climate change
free from smog and has a plan for the post-carbon era
as well as ways to achieve this vision as part of the Deep Demonstrations programme
It is a long-term process working towards a just transformation of this Silesian city
The vehicle is a new development strategy for Rybnik based on systemic innovation
This strategy is then implemented together with the city’s stakeholders
The process in Rybnik started in the last months of 2019 and has not lost momentum despite the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic
Over the course of the past challenging year
the city has consistently inched closer to a more sustainable and prosperous future
“We have identified four thematic areas as our main challenges within the project
the future of work and the future of mining,” says Wojciech Kiljańczyk
“Collaboration with Climate KIC is very important for Rybnik because we can learn from other cities and regions in Europe and in the world
while focusing on developing tailor-made solutions for our city
The innovation here is that we reverse the roles
The city government is focused on listening to the citizens
it is not about imposing a particular perspective
but listening to the citizens and other stakeholders in the city to identify the pathways of this transformation,” says Kiljańczyk
who is also the leader of the Rybnik360 project with Climate KIC’s partner SPIN-US
the main initiator of the collaboration between the city and Climate KIC
This is a unique initiative at the national level
as citizens and other city stakeholders are involved in planning the city’s development strategy and then implementing it together
As residents are the beating heart of this transformation
originating from the Mondragon Valley in the Basque Country
was used to co-create with them a long-term vision for the future of Rybnik
This method involved a series of in-depth interviews with residents and a complex analysis process
Deep Listening is a key methodology to foster more effective collective action for social change
“This is a unique opportunity to look at these processes
explore them and to take decisions based on data and not on what we imagine,” says Piotr Masłowski
“This project is about the transformation of mining and energy
We are focused on putting the city on a new path to the future
This project is a great opportunity to develop a new vision for Rybnik
what it will look like in the coming years,” he says
the non-governmental sector and community activists
as well as the local government and many other institutions about Rybnik’s past
present and future to gain the insights needed to plan further development of the city
In order to gain trust and understand different perspectives
the researchers sometimes had to work under difficult conditions
for example when they were underground and talked to miners in their daily working environment
The Climate KIC team has developed a tailored approach for Rybnik that addresses local specificity while laying the foundation for systemic innovation according to the Deep Demonstrations methodology
The three main pillars identified as key drivers are Future Literacy
“Identifying and understanding all the blockages
together with potential synergies and feedback loops is essential,” says Aneta Skubida
the main orchestrator of the project on the Climate KIC side
This approach is deliberately designed to be much more effective than old-fashioned
disconnected solutions that don’t always meet real
it’s based on constant learning and refining
“Rybnik is currently one of the most ambitious cities in Europe to take up the challenge of just transformation through a systemic innovations approach and broad collaboration with the city’s residents and stakeholders,” she says
A key element in the city’s transformation is the creation of a portfolio of strategic solutions that are interconnected to amplify the impact on Rybnik’s entire urban ecosystem
Based on the knowledge of all stakeholders
a map of the city’s current system was co-created
systems of interconnected resources and challenges were identified
and points in this system were selected where interventions should be implemented to achieve the desired impact
how to support entrepreneurs and encourage future entrepreneurs
or how to catalyse the replacement of coal heating in residents’ homes
This map forms targeted and deliberate city acupuncture to heal the systems and ensure the vitality of the city
This method also means that after the initial implementations
there is constant learning evolution of the portfolio
the partners involved in the Rybnik360 process created this portfolio of innovations that addresses the most important needs of residents and Rybnik’s path to a greener Europe
The future of Rybnik depends largely on the decisions of the authorities regarding the so-called hard factors of development
one of the most important being the pace of withdrawal from mining
the Rybnik city administration proves how much can be done without waiting for the big decisions: Finding ways for “positive momentum” in the city
attracting new types of investors (other industries
as well as finding new ways to collaborate with the whole community to create a better future together

The Slovenska brana (Slovak Gate) Military History Club has been presenting the rich military history of the village of Rybnik in the district of Levice and the adjacent microregion to the public since 2020.
Newly-promoted Rybnik has named former Speedway GP world champions Nicki Pedersen and Chris Holder in its squad for the 2025 PGE Ekstraliga season.
There will be plenty of competition for places in the side as Danish team manager Pedersen and Holder are joined by Aussie star Rohan Tungate – one of the club’s Metalkas 2. Ekstraliga title-winning heroes, who hopes to make his PGE Ekstraliga debut in 2025.
With only two spots available in the starting line-up for senior foreigners, one of the trio will be forced to sit on the sidelines for each match.
Double FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion Maksym Drabik joins Gleb Chugunov to form the club’s senior Polish duo, with two riders vying for the under-24 berth – Poland’s Kacper Pludra and Danish SGP2 star Jesper Knudsen.
The squad is completed by Polish juniors Paweł Trześniewski, Kacper Tkocz, Kamil Winkler and Paweł Wyczyszczok, who line up at No.6 and No.7.
Elsewhere, former Speedway GP winner Piotr Pawlicki has been unveiled in the Czestochowa side for 2025 as he makes the switch from Zielona Gora.
And Gorzow has extended Czech sensation Adam Bednar’s contract at the Edward Jancarz Stadium. While the Pardubice Golden Ribbons winner was already in the side for 2025, he will now race in blue and yellow in 2026 too.
A trio of Lafayette students researching how to recover phosphorus from wastewater recently had a graduate-level experience presenting at a national conference before faculty, Ph.D. students, and scientists from around the country.
Kaelyn Gormley ’22 (environmental science), John Rybnik ’23 (civil engineering), and Shane McCarthy ’22 (civil engineering) attended the American Chemical Society (ACS) conference in San Diego and delivered a podium presentation about their work, the only undergrad presenters at their particular symposium.
(L-R): Shane McCarthy ’22, Prof. Arthur Kney, Kaelyn Gormley ’22, and John Rybnik ’23 at American Chemical Society conference
“We’re looking into removing phosphorus from wastewater sludge, using bacteria that would solubilize the phosphorus,” Gormley says, adding that the removed phosphorus, a dwindling natural resource, can be reused for fertilizer.
“The goal with that is to divert nutrients that would end up in the landfill and also decrease dependence on mineable sources of phosphorus, because you want to create a more sustainable nutrient loop,” she says.
Discussing the research before a room full of academics and researchers from leading research institutions was a tad intimidating, but the opportunity to present at graduate level made the experience purely Lafayette, Rybnik says.
“We were the only undergrads at that symposium,” he says, noting that, unlike a poster session where researchers are approached about their work, a podium presentation requires a full PowerPoint presentation and the ability to respond to questions on the spot in a full conference room.
“It was a little intimidating but a very worthwhile experience,” Rybnik says.
The Lafayette research was among about 60 submissions reviewed during the ACS conference, says student adviser Arthur Kney, professor of civil and environmental engineering.
“A number of the faculty were from major universities and well respected around the country. It was a fantastic experience for my students,” he notes. “Many in attendance pulled my students aside to ask questions and let them know they did a great job with their presentation.”
Among them was Kney’s Ph.D. thesis adviser, Arup SenGupta, P.C. Rossin Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh University, who was honored at the conference and interacted with Gormley, Rybnik, and McCarthy about their research and even presented them with a book of his poetry.
“He gave us the feeling that our presentation was part of a lineage that started with him and Prof. Kney,” Gormley says. “That really helped validate what we’re doing.”
Gormley, Rybnik, and McCarthy also presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, the Lehigh/Lafayette David and Lorraine Freed Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the 2022 Lehigh Valley Ecology and Evolution Symposium.

“We are preparing plans for the next decade. Mentality is the hardest thing to change” says Piotr Kuczera, mayor of Rybnik, in an interview with Zielona Interia
the plans to accelerate the city’s transformation towards climate neutrality
Rybnik is situated in the heart of Silesia
the largest coal-producing region in the European Union
The city faces the joint challenges of energy transition and enormous air pollution
and many residents understand that transformation is necessary and urgent
Climate KIC laid the groundwork for regional transformation in 2019 through Rybnik360, a project that aims to change the city’s industrial sector to mitigate and adapt to climate change
together with the inhabitants and other actors operating in and around the city space
and social and economic life developed around the mines,” explains Rybnik’s mayor Kuczera in his interview with Zielona Interia
“But we are facing a significant civilisational change
and this must be reflected in the city’s upcoming development strategy
our plans must be coordinated with what the European Union is planning.”
Answering the journalist’s question about how the plan to transform Rybnik is perceived by the town hall
Kuczera says that the younger generation is particularly eager to see the changes happen in their city
“Young people know that mining is not the only path for the city; their awareness is very high
But mining is still seen as a strategic industry for Poland
and we have to be honest: changing the mentality of citizens is the most difficult challenge we face.”
The first stage of the Rybnik 360 process — where 180 in-depth interviews were held
and 93 innovation ideas created — helped identify air quality as a key area for improvement
addressing this issue is a fundamental part of the city’s development
He adds: “Mining and the impending change in the city’s economic profile have also been addressed as part of this process
As well as elements that can facilitate the work of city officials.” All of these
are important lessons that must be considered as part of the preparation of the strategy
The Rybnik360 project is a part of the Just Transformation Deep Demonstration programme
facilitates the transition of European regions that still rely on economies that are incompatible with tackling climate change
The programme recognises that people and economies engaged in these sectors are highly vulnerable during the transition to a decarbonised future and it will demonstrate that just transformations are possible

Speedway GP newcomer Brady Kurtz will change teams in Poland for 2025 after the Rybnik captain confirmed his departure after leading the club back into the PGE Ekstraliga
finishing top of the Polish second tier’s average charts on 2.402 points per race.
Media reports are linking him with a move to PGE Ekstraliga finalists Wroclaw as a replacement for the departing Tai Woffinden
While Kurtz is yet to confirm his next destination
he admitted in an Instagram post that he’s on the move for 2025 and thanked Rybnik for two stellar seasons
who booked his 2025 Speedway GP spot as winner of the FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice last Friday
I can confirm that I will not be staying with ROW Rybnik again in 2025.
“I hope everyone will understand that I have my reasons and under complicated circumstances
I had to make the best decision for myself to move forward in my career
Even with Rybnik's promotion to Ekstraliga
I stand by my decision 100 percent and can't wait to share what 2025 has in store.
“I would like to say thank you to the club
my teammates and of course the fans of ROW Rybnik for two great seasons together 2023 and 2024.
It was a pleasure to race on the track in Rybnik and I'm so happy that we achieved our goal as a team
won gold and got promoted to the PGE Ekstraliga
I look forward to seeing everyone again at Gliwicka 72 sometime in 2025.”
Rybnik president Krzysztof Mrozek commented: “It's a shame that the time has come to part ways
because someone like Brady would be useful to us in the Ekstraliga.
We wish him good luck in his new club and hope that our paths will cross again one day.”

A priest has racked up millions of views on TikTok after posting videos dancing with his Catholic catechism students at a high school in Poland
He is also using the platform to promote religious teaching
who teaches at a school in the city of Rybnik
regularly posts videos under the name “Padre Adriano”
They include choreographed dance routines performed by himself and his students to viral songs by artists such as Beyoncé and Meghan Trainor
as well as recreations of popular online trends
His most popular post has been watched 1.5 million times while others have around 1 million views
Chojnicki uses the platform to promote traditional Catholic beliefs such as abstaining from sex before marriage and finding salvation through faith
Many of his videos strive to show that religion classes are not boring and that young people do attend mass
Chojnicki and his students proclaim that attending catechism class makes you a “10/10”
Chojnicki’s newfound fame comes at a time when the church in Poland is particularly keen to promote a more positive view of itself among young people
Catholic hierarchs have admitted concern at the rapidly declining number of students attending optional Catholic catechism classes
which are hosted and funded by the public school system but with teachers and curriculums chosen by the church
Most pupils still attend the lessons, but recent data has shown that less than 25% of young Poles now regularly practise religion
down from a figure of almost 70% in the early 1990s
Only 29% attend Catholic catechism in Warsaw high schools as church warns of “wave of apostasies”
I want to show that the church is not so rigid
and that it radiates positive energy and is attractive,” Chojnicki told local news outlet Rybnik.com.pl in an interview last week
“I believe that it is necessary to show a positive Church
It should be where young people are.”
which is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance
is used by over 1 billion people worldwide every month
The majority of its users are under the age of 24
making it a popular platform to reach young people
Chojnicki is far from the first religious figure to join TikTok
Among the most popular religious orders and figures on the platform are the Daughters of St Paul
a group of Catholic nuns in the United States who have drawn over 150,000 followers

Polsat Plus Group and ZE PAK Group have constructed and launched the first in Silesia
public hydrogen refueling station serving cars and buses
20 hydrogen-powered NesoBus city buses produced by Polsat Plus Group and ZE PAK Group which have already started serving passengers in Rybnik
The town is one of the leaders of green energy transformation in Poland
with the buses and refueling station being one of the main elements of the emerging Rybnik Hydrogen District
Polsat Plus Group’s and ZE PAK’s chain of hydrogen refueling stations is being developed under NESO brand
The name is the acronym of the Polish slogan: “Nie Emituję Spalin
Oczyszczam,” which means “Emits No Exhaust Fumes and Purifies the Air.” NESO stations are currently among the most advanced hydrogen refueling stations in Europe
The stations can be used by Rybnik municipal transport buses as well as by all users of hydrogen-powered vehicles
“Transformation of Rybnik Coal Area into Rybnik Hydrogen District is slowly becoming a fact,” says Piotr Kuczera
“We have the ambition of becoming a modern technology hub which relies on sustainable and efficient sources of green energy
The project – the second in Poland (following Warsaw) generally-accessible hydrogen refueling station – is one of the elements of Rybnik’s transformation
that is of the process of migration to clean energy sources,” adds the President of Rybnik
“The hydrogen refueling station in Rybnik is our second station in Poland that is being launched in a matter of a few weeks
which was once the leader of pollution rankings
has transformed in a short time into a leader of green transformation among Polish cities
It is a merit of the people ruling the city and it is their efforts that deserve recognition of people from other parts of Poland
and above all of the inhabitants of Rybnik itself
We are glad that the first hydrogen refueling station in Silesia is being opened in Rybnik
NesoBus hydrogen buses which are produced by our factory in Swidnik,” says Maciej Stec
the Vice-President for Strategy at Polsat Plus Group and a member of the Supervisory Board of ZE PAK Group
Hydrogen-powered cars and buses emit distilled vapor from their exhaust pipes
Hydrogen cars and buses are already in mass production
which has been built by Polsat Plus Group and ZE PAK Group
is the first generally-accessible station of this type in Silesia
Refueling process is almost the same as at a gasoline station
A car can be fully refueled in a matter of minutes
while in the case of buses the process takes less than a quarter of an hour
Hydrogen-powered cars are now generally available which can drive more than 600 kilometers on one tank
The refueling process is exactly the same as at a traditional gas station – you take the gas pump nozzle from the pump
place it in a car’s or a bus’s fuel intake
The gas pump nozzle providing 700 bar pressure is designed for refueling of passenger cars
while the one providing 350 bar – for buses
Hydrogen is transported to the station using hydrogen tank trucks which can carry as much as 1000 kg of H2 at a time
The green hydrogen-powered buses and cars emit no exhaust fumes while additionally purifying the air
They emit no harmful substances – apart from CO2 such harmful substances mainly include nitrogen oxides or particulates
NESO station owned by Polsat Plus Group and ZE PAK Group is to a great extent self-sufficient in terms of power supply
supply electricity to the station while energy storage
