on https://www.dvidshub.net/about/copyright Poland – The first Nereda installation in Poland in the city of Ryki has celebrated a year in operation and has met all effluent requirements This is the first installation located in the eastern part of Central Europe dealing with very low process temperatures in the order of 7–8 °C during the winter period The Ryki Nereda plant is designed to treat 5,320 m3/day (dry weather) corresponding to 38,600 PE (population equivalent) the plant combines the treatment of different incoming sewages (domestic septic tanks and industrial) and has to handle extended industrial peak load periods Nereda is Royal HaskoningDHV’s patented full-scale municipal and industrial wastewater treatment technology that utilises aerobic granular sludge, developed through a collaborative public-private partnership involving Dutch wastewater treatment stakeholders the Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) various treatment plant end-users and Royal HaskoningDHV a Polish company of Royal HaskoningDHV group won the public tender for the complete design of the new Ryki Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for Przedsiebiorstwo Gospodarki Komunalnej i Mieszkaniowej (PGKiM) located in eastern Poland in the Province of Lublin The Nereda solution was said to have successfully responded to important criteria in the tender evaluation process such as low capital expenditure and low total operating costs The construction of the plant was awarded by SKANSKA (contractor) and DVH Hydroprojekt was appointed as the subcontractor responsible for the Nereda detailed design supply of equipment to the reactors and the start-up of the installation The start-up of the plant was initiated in February 2015 and the Nereda reactors were both inoculated with conventional activated sludge mainly transferred from the old works and a small portion from an external conventional WWTP At the time of the start-up the biomass concentration in the Nereda reactors was only 2 g/ℓ and therefore it was necessary to gradually increase the treatment capacity available in the new installation Two months after the start-up was initiated the new Nereda installation was able to treat the total incoming sewage reaching the plant and the old SBR reactors were decommissioned Since start-up the Ryki WWTP has been challenged by very low wastewater temperatures as compared with the intended minimum design temperature (12 °C) The biological process in the Nereda reactors was initiated in almost freezing conditions (approximately 4 °C) and only three months later (end of April) the design temperature was achieved The highest process temperature (23 °C) was reached in August 2015 (in summer) and since then a strong negative trend has been noted and less than 8 °C in the reactors was measured during most of January 2016 Since April 2015 (two months after the initiation of the plant start-up) Ryki WWTP has been showing “an excellent performance constantly meeting the effluent standard requirements” The plant operation is said to be positively responding to the peak industrial load (registered between September and December) as well as to extremely low wastewater temperatures (< 8 °C on average) noted in January and February 2016 To date more than fifteen full-scale municipal and industrial Nereda plants are in operation and another fifteen are under construction (with a total installed capacity of about 5 million PE) Australia and Brazil there are already Nereda plants in operation or under construction treated sewages meet EU standards and we achieve established ecological effect that it would not be possible without a very good cooperation with DHV Hydroprojekt.” Nereda Technology installed in three wastewater treatment plants, Ireland decriminalization of marijuana The legalization of marijuana will open dialogue between all dental professionals and encourage the development of educational materials for patients in their care It is imperative to consider associations between marijuana and the possibility of an increase in oral pathology and periodontal disease and to discover the best way to treat these conditions legalization and decriminalization will lead to the creation of more continuing education courses on the topic and the availability of improved treatment modalities This knowledge will benefit the dental community and may foster more honest dialogue around medical and dental histories If patients are forthcoming with information especially when local anesthesia is involved Dental hygienists may use this knowledge to improve suggestions for oral health education and products to assist in decreasing periodontal disease The conversation surrounding marijuana has transformed drastically over the past decade With more states legalizing and decriminalizing the use of both recreational and medicinal marijuana annually new thoughts on the use of cannabis are arising More states are beginning to decriminalize marijuana and others are actively working toward legalization the terms “legalized” and “decriminalized” are used in the wrong context Legalization refers to the ability to purchase cannabis products as long as the customer meets age requirements Decriminalization refers to maintaining marijuana’s status as an illegal substance in certain cases but not prosecuting for possession under a certain amount they might face fines or other sanctions.1 States where these laws have been passed have shown the benefits of legalization and decriminalization but new problems have also been brought to light Decriminalization and legalization of marijuana have shown great economic impact throughout states that have adopted more liberal policies and entrepreneurs have had the chance to develop their share of the business after just 12 days of legalization in Illinois $19.7 million was generated in sales alone.2 A boost to state sales tax means more money for the local economy while profits earned by dispensary owners fund more opportunities for them and their employees profits are expected to increase each year.3 Legalization is not the only way to fuel a state’s economy offenders are often charged a fine instead of facing jail time for possession ranging from $100 in Delaware to $250 in Mississippi These fines carry the benefit of bringing in revenue absent the cost of housing an inmate or crowding state facilities one may have to complete community service hours or attend a drug counseling class.4 A question that is often asked is how legalization will affect those already punished for marijuana-related crimes those convicted with possession under a certain amount will have their charges expunged This means that thousands will now have no criminal background while others will have certain charges dropped from their background.5 This could allow for renewed opportunity for those harshly affected by marijuana crimes this only applies to those who were convicted of crimes involving under a certain amount of marijuana meaning not everyone will be eligible to have their crime expunged States that have legalized marijuana have used similar methods for expunging the crimes Criminal records for marijuana-related crimes have been removed in states such as Colorado expungement took place immediately on day the law went into effect.4 When planning for legalization Illinois wanted to take a different approach lawmakers wanted to seize the opportunity to spread the wealth Illinois’ plan was designed with social equity in mind The idea of giving those in poverty-ridden neighborhoods new opportunities was one of the main goals when designing this legislation.6 Those once convicted of marijuana-related offenses are offered resources to start a business in the cannabis industry.4 Programs like this help break the cycle of poverty by giving assistance to those who may not be able to access the resources needed to start a business due to charges on their record Another question to consider is how marijuana use will affect America’s youth Using marijuana products in adolescence has been linked to poor academic performance and future dependency issues.7 After cannabis was decriminalized in New Mexico a study was conducted to determine if new laws would influence young adults’ choices around marijuana use Decriminalizing may entice those who were once more fearful of being caught to start using the products The study found that new laws did in fact produce a positive relationship between decriminalization and the use of cannabis among young adults.8 Marijuana is used in many states for medicinal purposes Users must apply for and receive a special license allowing them to purchase cannabis products to ease medical conditions Medical marijuana can be used in place of opioids for pain With the opioid crisis in America at an all-time high this option may help to reduce opioid abuse that is wreaking havoc throughout the nation a study was conducted to investigate whether states that had decriminalized marijuana for both medicinal and recreational use had lower rates of opioid abuse The study discovered that all states that decriminalized marijuana had fewer opioid-related deaths and hospitalizations than states that did not.9 While data was inconclusive about an overall decrease in abuse this indicates a step in the right direction there have been racially charged arguments about how marijuana laws are not enforced equally across races A report created by the American Civil Liberties Union analyzed the rate at which Black people and White people were being convicted of marijuana-related crimes between 2001 and 2010 they found that Black people are 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for a marijuana-related offense than White people despite both races having similar usage rates.10 Decriminalization and legalization of marijuana could help with this problem With more lenient laws for marijuana-related offenses decriminalization and legalization of marijuana have already had a substantial impact in the United States As more states continue to work toward total legalization the steps they are taking to decriminalize cannabis are making a difference both locally and nationally we can hope to see more progress and justice for those affected by past marijuana offenses RYKI Between 1994 and 1997, Dereck Joubert found that the lions of Botswana’s Chobe National Park were getting better and better at hunting elephants a single male lion ran at nearly full speed into the side of a 6-year-old male calf with sufficient force to collapse the elephant on its side.” Male lions clearly pose a great threat, and older elephants know it. Karen McComb from the University of Sussex has found that older matriarchs – the females who lead elephant herds – are more aware of the threat posed by male lions they’re more likely to usher their herd into a defensive formation Their experience and leadership could save their followers’ lives “Family units led by older matriarchs are going to be in a position to make better decisions about predatory threats which is likely to enhance the fitness of individuals within the group,” says McComb jump onto its back and flanks (out of way of the trunk) so elephants can thwart their attacks by bunching together The calves go in the middle; the adults face outwards in a formidable defensive ring of tusks and trunks McComb studied 39 groups of elephants at Amboseli National Park, including hundreds of animals who are all individually known she played the recorded roars of lions – either one or three She filmed their responses (and asked an independent colleague to confirm her interpretations) the elephants responded more strongly to the roars of three lions than the sound of a singleton The matriarch was more likely to raise her head and ears and the others were more likely to quickly draw towards her in a tight huddle but only those with older leaders (60 years or more) twigged to the greater danger posed by the fake male roars and they were even more likely to aggressively mob the lions the more sensitive they and their group were to the sound of male lions They didn’t react in the same way to lionesses so it wasn’t that they were becoming generally more panicky in their dotage. they had become better at discerning the most dangerous roars Why does age matter? Male and female lions do have distinct roars, but humans only started to recognise the differences when we used recording equipment and computer software It’s not surprising that an elephant would need a lifetime of experience to learn these subtle cues because their leaders know how best to find scarce resources and avoid predators And in 2007, Lucy King found that matriarchs might even help their herds to avoid getting stung. King showed that elephants will run away if they hear the sound of bees only one group of elephants didn’t run away when it heard recordings of buzzing The group was unusually small and young – it had no matriarch and the eldest individual was a 20-year-old male It could be that none of the three elephants in the group had been stung themselves Studies like these show that matriarchs hold a unique role in elephant society and that their loss would be particularly damaging matriarchs are often inviting targets for human rifles It can take minutes for a poacher to rob a group of elephants of a lifetime of accumulated knowledge and experience Image by Robek (lion) and McComb (elephant); video by McComb Copyright © 1996-2015 National Geographic SocietyCopyright © 2015-2025 National Geographic Partners View upcoming auction estimates and receive personalized email alerts for the artists you follow The three unique works by Monika Sosnowska (b Poland) on view in the Grand Hall were recently acquired for the Mudam Collection The use of raw materials traditionally found withinthe construction industry – beams for example – is characteristic of the artist’s work contorted and warped to achieve new forms liberated from their original design function The vocabulary of architecture is a direct source of inspiration for Sosnowska political and ideological weight of certain buildings Architecture gives form to ideals: utopias that have succeeded and failed Sosnowska is particularly interested in the modernist currents of the twentieth century not only in the West (as in Soviet-era Eastern European architecture) but in Asia as well during one of the artist’s various trips to Bangladesh Through this encounter she witnessed the ways in which modernist principles had been transposed in a different cultural and economic context She also observed local construction methods and techniques: workers along the riverbanks extracting rocks to turn into gravel and then concrete destined for buildings that were either being built or abandoned halfway through construction These sculptures derive directly from Sosnowska’s observations of this terrain The titles describe the materials they contain: ‘rebar’ refers to the metal rods used to reinforce ‘concrete’ like the ones that anarchically jut out from incomplete constructions in Dhaka they seem to have found their independence to draw freewheeling forms in space breaking with the geometric rationality associated with modernist architecture 2013Get email notification for articles from David B naval officer who was responsible for the creation of the American nuclear navy He was the first Jew to reach the senior rank of admiral.
