The United States has announced that it will withdraw military personnel and equipment from the Polish city of Rzeszów – which since 2022 has become the main hub for aid to Ukraine – and relocate them to other parts of Poland
It says the decision will “save American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars per year” and will see NATO and Poland itself take greater responsibility for security around Rzeszów
.@USArmyEURAF announces the planned repositioning of U.S. 🇺🇸 military equipment and personnel from Jasionka, Poland 🇵🇱, to other sites in the country. Facilitating military aid to Ukraine 🇺🇦 will continue under Polish and NATO leadership.https://t.co/9BpL5VlItu

After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Rzeszów – and in particular its airport, known as Jasionka – became the primary hub for military equipment and humanitarian goods being sent to Ukraine
as well as for officials travelling in and out of the country
That resulted in a large US military presence around the city, including American Patriot missile batteries protecting the airport. In 2022, then US President Joe Biden visited American forces stationed there
the United States Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF) said that it was “announc[ing] the planned repositioning of US military equipment and personnel from Jasionka
“The decision…reflects months of assessment and planning
coordinated closely with Polish hosts and NATO allies” and is “part of a broader strategy to optimize US military operations
improving the level of support to allies and partners while also enhancing efficiencies”

“The important work of facilitating military aid to Ukraine via Jasionka will continue under Polish and NATO leadership
supported by a streamlined US military footprint,” said USAREUR-AF
In January this year, Germany began protecting Rzeszów and Jasionka with two of its Patriot batteries
taking over responsibility from the Americans
said that Germany’s support highlighted how “important [it is] that we support each other within the…NATO framework”
The Polish government has not yet commented on this week’s announcement by the US
Germany will move Patriot missile units to Poland next year to support the defence of Polish airspace
In particular, they will protect "the supply of weapons that Ukraine urgently needs to defend itself against the brutal Russian attacks", says Germany https://t.co/3oiGvsZjjj

“Poland is a great host,” said Christopher Donahue
we have moved to more permanent facilities in the country.”
In 2022, Biden announced the establishment of a permanent US military base in Poland – its first in the country and first anywhere on NATO’s eastern flank. Last year, the US also opened a missile defence base in Poland
There are currently around 10,000 American military personnel stationed in the country
this is an opportunity to right-size our footprint and save American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars per year,” added Donahue on Monday
The US had opened a missile defence base in Poland
its first permanent military installation in the country
This shows “the whole world clearly that this is no longer a Russian zone of influence”, declared Polish President @AndrzejDuda https://t.co/g1PUS4d8yE

Daniel Lawton, the US chargé d’affaires in Poland, who is heading the embassy until the appointment of a new ambassador
said on Monday that his country is “deeply grateful to the city and people of Jasionka for warmly welcoming American personnel and high-level visitors over the past three years”
“Your support has exemplified the close ties between our nations and enhanced the strength of our US-Poland partnership,” he added
this transition allows us to sustain our close cooperation while using resources more efficiently.”
Much of Poland’s unprecedented military spending has gone on US equipment and related services. Last week, the two governments signed an agreement worth almost $2 billion that will see the US provide logistical support and training for Poland’s own Patriot air defence systems
Poland has signed a $2bn deal for the US to provide logistical support for the Patriot systems protecting Polish skies
"Let Poland be an example that loyalty to allies and investment in security is the foundation of Western civilisation," said @donaldtusk https://t.co/sOCgT4YarU

withdrawal from Rzeszów signals not just a shift in logistics
but a broader retreat from its role as Ukraine’s primary arsenal
It was situated within 50 km of the Ukrainian border and it had a runway long enough to land American C-17 Globemaster III aircraft
Rzeszów acquired significance beyond its aspirations
a funnel for shipping billions of dollars worth of military equipment to the Kiev regime
Now the United States, in an effort to cut costs, is withdrawing its forces from Rzeszów. At the beginning of April, there were reports of a flurry of C-17s landing at the Polish airstrip, but these have now tapered off. Presumably, European aid arrives by rail. The C-17 deliveries may well have placed the last of the Biden aid
Rzeszów was protected by American Patriot missile batteries
Those have been packed up and withdrawn (see Figure 1 and Figure 2)
The US assures NATO and the public that the forces are merely being “redeployed” but there is no information as to where
One has to wonder – if the key northern hub for supply to Ukraine does not rate Patriot air defense
Probably the US Aegis Ashore installations
The United Kingdom has been under fire from NATO for its lack of air defense assets
The slack will likely be taken up by Germany and its IRIS-T systems
this would certainly affect US combat power on the continent
Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed the US commitment to the defense of Poland
The Trump administration has been at pains to squelch rumors that the US was withdrawing from the Greek port of Alexandroupolis
the port has been used to marshal military aid to Ukraine via Romania and the southern route
The Trump administration is unlikely to withdraw from NATO
but it is equally unlikely to commit another $60 billion to Ukraine
Such a move would divorce the administration from the MAGA America First base
but he has to make decisions with a view to 2028 in mind
Rather it is likely the US will maintain a radically reduced footprint

Army Europe and Africa Command announced on April 8 that American personnel and equipment will be relocated from Poland's Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport
a key logistics hub for delivering military aid to Ukraine
"The important work of facilitating military aid to Ukraine via Jasionka will continue under Polish and NATO leadership, supported by a streamlined U.S. military footprint," the command said in a statement
The redeployment, which will move assets to other locations in Poland
follows months of planning and is part of a broader strategy to optimize U.S
"Poland is a great host," said Gen
"After three years at Jasionka this is an opportunity to right-size our footprint and save American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars per year."
Polish President Andrzej Duda responded to the announcement by assuring that the move does not signify a U.S
"I don't know if this is being implemented at this point. The very issue of taking responsibility for the security issues of the Rzeszow airport, its security, I know," Duda said during a press conference in Tallinn
The U.S. military has operated in Jasionka, near Rzeszow, since early 2022. The airport quickly became one of the most important logistical points for coordinating Western support to Ukraine
protected by American Patriot air defense systems
Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport is located less than 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Ukrainian border and transports a significant percentage of Western materiel bound for the front lines
It is also a main stopover point for foreign leadership traveling to Kyiv on official visits
In March 2023, Warsaw detained at least 16 members of a Russian spy ring tasked with gathering information on the number of transports to Ukraine in the region surrounding the airport
The redeployment comes amid growing concerns in Europe over a potential drawdown of U.S. forces. NBC News reported on April 8 that senior Defense Department officials are weighing a plan to withdraw up to 10,000 U.S
U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" doctrine and recent statements from U.S
officials have raised alarm among NATO allies about Washington's long-term commitment to European defense

Expanded capabilities will support increased Polish Air Force needs
signed a letter of intent with Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze Nr
to explore expanded maintenance repair and overhaul capabilities for increased Polish Air Force needs
"We are identifying ways to increase F100 engine sustainment work in Poland to ensure our Polish ally has the propulsion power they need," said Piotr Owsicki
general director of Pratt & Whitney Rzeszów
"We plan to use existing knowledge and experience
as well as infrastructure testing facilities
to provide the full cycle of F100 engine maintenance in country."
the original F100 engines powering the Polish Air Force's F-16 fleet were built by Polish employees at the Pratt & Whitney Rzeszów facility
the facility produces F100 static structures and critical rotating parts in support of new F100 engines and worldwide sustainment
"Our cooperation with Pratt & Whitney Rzeszów dates back to when they produced the F100 engines for the Polish F-16 fleet," said Mr
"Participation in subsequent projects is a development of WZL2's competencies beyond the repair of F100 engine modules
which in the future will give more opportunities to support the Polish Air Force."
Should the Polish Air Force select the F-15EX to enhance its defense capabilities
the F100 engine is the F-15EX's best propulsion solution
The Polish Air Force's existing familiarity with the F100
coupled with the Polish industry's long-standing F100 MRO capability
will provide the most cost effective and lowest risk path to sustaining the engines and maximizing fleet readiness for both the F-15EX and F-16

JASIONKA, Poland — The U.S. military formally transferred its Patriot missile defense mission in Poland to German forces Monday, marking the first such handover to happen in Europe, officials said.
The Army’s 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, the only U.S. Patriot missile battalion based in Europe, deployed to Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport in southeastern Poland shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
On Monday, battalion commander Lt. Col. Daniel Corbett played down speculation that the decision to remove his unit from the mission was driven by European leaders’ fears over future U.S. commitment.
“The biggest catalyst for this is that we were redirected to a modernization effort by the chief of staff of the Army,” Corbett said after the transfer of authority to Germany’s Surface to Air Missile Group 21.
Corbett was referring to plans for the unit to become the first operational U.S. Patriot battalion to field the Army’s new Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System.
The battalion is scheduled to get the system in the coming months, and there had been concerns over how it would do so while simultaneously carrying out the mission in Poland.
Monday’s ceremony marked the first time that a U.S.-led Patriot mission in Europe was turned into a NATO mission, Corbett said.
German troops arrived at the Patriot sites two weeks ago. Soldiers with Charlie Battery, one of the battalion’s last two batteries at the airport, said that the process was easier than expected and that the Germans started operating their Patriot systems a little over a week ago, days ahead of schedule.
The soldiers described an abrupt end to their mission, saying that they had found out about the takeover sometime in November, and that the battalion’s units in Baumholder were already preparing to deploy.
“Leadership came out to the site, rounded up everyone and were like ‘the Germans are coming,’ ” Charlie Battery’s Sgt. Marcus DeLord said. “And we were like, ‘yes, please.’ ”
DeLord said the mission was rewarding but grueling for the unit. The high tempo was especially hard on soldiers with family back at Baumholder.
Charlie Battery commander Capt. Marco Aveledo said the Poland mission took precedence over everything else. The unit hasn’t been able to take part in any training events in Europe, for example.
However, Aveledo said the experience the air defenders got in Poland was unmatched.
“We’ve had the opportunity to work with NATO, not in a superficial way but by actually integrating with them,” Aveledo said.
Aveledo’s battery removed the final missiles from their launchers Sunday and prepared them to be sent back to Germany overland. The soldiers are expected to drive back to Baumholder on Friday.
Several of the battery’s soldiers said they had postponed their redeployments to the U.S. to support the Poland mission because they thought it was important.
“It’s good to come out here and be part of something and feel like you’re doing something to protect others and contribute to something that is bigger than yourself,” said fueler Sgt. Kwadasia Grant, one of the soldiers who pushed back her deployment.
The Patriot is a long-range surface-to-air missile defense system used to shoot down threats such as enemy aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.
The system operates with its own dedicated radar and command-and-control setup, meaning each unit functions independently with limited coordination.
In contrast, the IBCS links multiple sensors and missile platforms across the battlefield, providing a unified air defense network. Army officials say the upgrade will allow the unit to integrate with other air defense assets, such as THAAD and Aegis, improving threat detection, tracking and engagement flexibility.
Charlie Battery’s 1st Lt. Mackenzie Arns said most of the unit felt proud of the work. And stepping away from the eastern flank didn’t feel like stepping away from the bigger picture, according to Arns.
“Our mission isn’t done; we are still the only U.S. Patriot asset in Europe,” Arns said. “We’re just going back to focus on something else until they need us again.”

It was noted that the decision regarding the relocation of troops and equipment was made after several months of assessment and planning in close cooperation with NATO partners
It was also mentioned that the operation of this important transport hub will continue under the leadership of Poland and other NATO countries

Poland has placed Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) near the Ukrainian border, amid Russian threats toward the country
On Thursday, the General Staff of Poland's Armed Forces announced that NASAMS had been stationed near the logistics center in Rzeszów, a city around 40 miles from Ukraine
The country also received several F-35 stealth fighter jets
which the General Staff said will "support the defense of Polish airspace."
The ground-based NASAMS are currently used by 13 countries
according to Norwegian defense firm Kongsberg
Ukraine has so far received at least 13 NASAMS
with a further four promised by Norway and Lithuania
This transfer was previously announced by the Norwegian Ministry of Defense in early December
which committed to "assum[ing] air defense responsibility for the most important hub for the transport of both civilian and military material from other countries to Ukraine."
Some 100 Norwegian soldiers will also be stationed at Rzeszów until Easter
in order to safeguard the transfer of supplies to Ukraine
Newsweek has contacted the Polish Ministry of Defense via email for further comment on the NASAMS delivery
Rzeszów is a key passageway for Western assistance into Ukraine
but the provision of Norwegian air defenses also comes amid fears that Poland could soon be targeted by Russia for its role in the conflict
In November, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that a newly opened U.S. air base in Redzikowo had become one of the "priority targets for potential neutralization." As quoted by Russian news agency Tass
Zakharova said that the destruction of the facility could be carried out "using a wide range of advanced weaponry."
On November 21, the Polish military said that it had "activated all available forces and resources," including fighter jets and air-defense systems, in response to a Russian attack near the border in Western Ukraine
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that there were significant fears that the country could soon be targeted by Moscow
warning that "Polish F-16s are ready to act if a missile threatens our territory."
"The threat from Russia is realistic," Kosiniak-Kamysz continued
"The citizens of Ukraine are experiencing it every day."
Wojciech Lorenz is head of the International Security Programme at The Polish Institute of International Affairs
and spoke to Newsweek about Polish attempts to counter these threats
"Poland is strengthening its potential rapidly because there is a real risk of direct Russian attack on NATO in a couple of years time," Lorenz said
citing America's increasing focus on the Indo-Pacific as a potential catalyst for further expansionism by Moscow
Lorenz warned that the frontiers of the conflict would then shift to Poland
and that Russia may be emboldened to confront NATO states directly
"While some countries and politicians still prefer to believe that [a] Russian attack on NATO is not realistic
Poland is taking such [a] risk extremely seriously," he added
Poland is not the only Eastern European state fortifying its defenses in anticipation of future threats from Russia
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently announced that the European Union would be providing €170 million (approximately $180 million) in funds to six countries to help them counter "hybrid threats" posed by Russia and Belarus
"Finland, alongside [Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Norway], is bravely keeping our borders safe from threats of all forms coming from Russia and Belarus," von der Leyen wrote on X
Estonia re-opened the Ämari Air Base following renovation work
which NATO celebrated as a "enabl[ing] NATO and the Allies to continue ensuring collective security in the Baltic Sea region."
on December 2: "Russia's invasion of Ukraine have demonstrated the value of air defense
and the Norwegian contribution in Poland is highly appreciated
We are doing this primarily for Ukraine and Poland
but it also shows that we stand by our commitments within NATO."
The Norwegian mission at Rzeszów is set to last until Easter

Poland Secures Funding to Purchase 20 Hydrogen Buses
AirBaltic will open flights between its base in Riga
hoping to serve Ukrainians seeking to travel from the war-torn country
Commercial air service to and from Ukraine has been suspended since Russia’s Feb
airBaltic will operate flights to Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport (RZE)
The airline said Ukrainians can reach RZE via buses and trains
“With Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport being the closest Polish airport to the Ukrainian border
this new route provides Ukrainian travelers with a seamless and efficient way to access airBaltic's extensive European network,” the airline said in a statement
The service will be operated with an Airbus A220-300
The airline did not say how many frequencies it will operate on the route
AirBaltic noted buses travel to Rzeszów from Ukrainian cities including Kyiv and Lviv
The buses operate directly to Rzeszów’s city center and the airport
The airline added that “Ukrainian citizens can travel by night and intercity trains from major cities
the airport is easily accessible by local transport
with a bus service that operates between the city center and the airport

This is meant to symbolize the reduction of American military aid to Kiev
not function as the first step towards a complete withdrawal from Poland or Central & Eastern Europe as a whole
the bulk will be pulled from Poland and Romania
the two largest countries on NATO’s eastern flank
Putin requested in late 2021 that the US remove its forces from CEE so as to restore Washington’s compliance with the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act whose many violations worsened the Russian-US security dilemma
Trump appears open to at least partial compliance with Putin’s request
which could become one among several pragmatic mutual compromises that they’re negotiating to normalize ties and end the proxy war
so some could hypothetically be cut but still leave with Poland more than before 2022
The outcome of next month’s presidential election will play a huge role in determining Polish policy in this regard and could be influenced by perceptions (accurate or not) of America abandoning Poland
This could be sufficient for counteracting the liberals’ possible plans to pivot towards France at the expense of the US’ influence or maintaining the US’ predominant position in Poland if a liberal President works with his like-minded Prime Minister to rely on France for balancing the US a bit
Even if the Trump Administration fumbles this opportunity due to a lack of vision or a fully liberal government in Poland picks fights with the US for ideological reasons
the US isn’t expected to completely dump Poland
the most radical scenario of a full-blown liberal-led Polish pivot towards France would be limited by the impracticality of replacing American military wares with French ones anytime soon
with the furthest that this might go being the hosting of nuclear-equipped Rafale fighters
Poland could also invite some French troops into the country
ask US forces to leave since it wants to preserve their tripwire potential
With the interplay of these interests in mind
it can be concluded that the US’ withdrawal from Poland’s Rzeszow logistics facility for Ukraine is meant to symbolize the reduction of American military aid to Kiev
not function as the first step towards a complete withdrawal from Poland or CEE as a whole
While some regional US troop reductions are possible as one among several pragmatic compromises that Trump might agree to with Putin for normalizing ties and ending the proxy war

she “does not resemble a resident of the region”
“The choice of the [Miss] Rzeszów jury looks like another symptom of political correctness and the imposition of multiculturalism on Poles,” they added
“Are there no more beautiful Polish girls in Rzeszów?”

That triggered a wave of comments on social media criticising the choice of Forrest as Miss Rzeszów and suggesting she had only been chosen because of her skin colour
Forrest herself responded in a video posted on TikTok
saying that she had received “unimaginable hate on the internet” following Sommer and Najwyższy Czas‘s comments

Sometimes children said something unpleasant to me
But I never expected hate on this scale.”
Forrest also appealed for a lawyer who could help her take action against the abuse
the organiser of Poland’s main national beauty contest
Polska Miss – in which Forrest will compete this September having won the Rzeszów title – announced that they would provide legal support to Forrest
the district prosecutor’s office in Rzeszów confirmed to local media outlet Rzeszów News that they had received notification of a suspected crime from a lawyer representing Forrest
She alleges a violation of Poland’s hate crime law

The notification has not been filed against a specific individual but in relation to “several dozen comments on the internet”

Germany overhauled Ukraine on their final dive to win gold in the Team Event on the opening day of the European Junior Diving Championships 2024 in Rzeszów
Ten teams took to the boards with Giorgia de Sanctis performing the opening dive of the competition
She was awarded 60 points for her Forward 2 ½ Somersaults with Twist to guide Italy into the lead ahead of Ukraine (56pts) and Germany (50.60)

Tim Axer guided Germany into second (118.60) with Poland in third (103.20)

22.30 ahead of Germany (169.00) with Sweden in third (147.90)
While Ukraine were enjoying a sizeable lead
just 18.30pts separated Sweden and Poland in 10th
The divers moved onto the 10m Platform where Ukraine faltered

Danylo Avanesov scored 41.40 for his Armstand Back 2 ½ Somersaults 2 ½ Twists
It allowed Charlotte Lederer and Ole Johannes Roesler to guide Germany to within 0.70 of Ukraine with the latter leading 285.90 to 285.20
Italy were third (262.50) with Great Britain having moved up from eighth at halfway to within sight of the podium with 252.35

Ukraine were up next with Hylzhina and Avanesov scoring 6/6.5s for their Forward 3 ½ Somersaults for 55.50
It meant the German duo of Roesler and Lederer knew they would clinch gold if they matched or bettered 56.20 with their Back 2 ½ Somersaults with 1 ½ twists
A range of 6.5s and 7s earned them 64.00 and the gold medal with a total score of 349.20

Danylo Avanesov and Marko Barsukov claimed a Ukrainian 1-2 and Signe Stahl won Sweden’s only medal as the European Junior Diving Championships 2024 concluded in Rzeszów
Avanesov led the way in the Boys A Platform after moving into the lead in the penultimate round while Stahl produced a series of consistently fine dives to win the Girls A 3m Springboard
The seven-day competition at the Rzeszów Diving Arena ended with Ukraine top of the medal table with six golds
five bronzes) were second ahead of Italy (3g
4b) with the four the only countries to claim more than one medal
Simone Conte headed the Boys A Platform prelims ahead of Ole Roesler and Raffaele Pelligra
Roesler had a superb opening dive with a great take-off
for which he was awarded 8s by the judges for a total of 76.80
The German headed the standings with 260.60 ahead of Pelligra (248.55) and Conte (248.00) with Ukrainian duo Avanesov and Barsukov
The second round featured a huge dive from Barsukov who was awarded 8.5s for 81.60 for his Inward 3 ½ Somersaults Tuck
Roesler still led at the end of the round with 323.00 ahead of Conte (320.00) with Avanesov (316.55) and Barsukov (316.30) following close behind
Avanesov and Barsukov really made inroads into the deficit in the third round
scoring 79.20 and 74.25 respectively with both men performing the Back 3 ½ Somersaults Tuck
who scored 74.00 for the Forward 4 ½ Somersaults Tuck
still led with 397.00 but his lead was down to 1.25 over Avanesov (395.75) with Barsukov on 390.55
Avanesov was the only man in the field to attempt the Armstand Back 2 Somersaults 2 ½ Twists Free
That followed Barsukov’s 70.40 for the Armstand Back 2 Somersaults 1 ½ Twists Free
Roesler stepped up for the Back 3 ½ Somersaults Tuck but he missed the dive leaving him short on the entry
It meant Avanesov led the way going into the final round with 473.15 ahead of Barsukov (460.95) with Roesler third with 438.25
Barsukov went into the lead with his Back 2 ½ Somersaults 2 ½ Twists Pike
Avanesov responded with a Forward 3 ½ Somersaults Pike which he executed superbly throughout the dive and on entry to earn 8s and 7.5s for 70.50
couldn’t produce a clean Armstand Back 2 Somersaults 1 ½ Twists Free and scored only 48.00
Conte came to the platform knowing he needed 66 from his Inward 3 ½ Somersaults Tuck to claim a medal and his score of 67.20 was enough to see him leapfrog teammate Pelligra for bronze
The competition ended with Avanesov in gold on 543.65 ahead of Barsukov (536.55) and Conte (502.45) followed by Pelligra
Giorgia De Sanctis headed the Girls A 3m Springboard preliminary on the final morning in Poland ahead of Sweden’s Stahl and Diana Karnafel of Ukraine
cut from the 21 who had competed in the heats
Stahl led after the first round following her Inward 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck to head the standings in 258.34
0.49 ahead of Karnafel (257.85) and Emily Steinhagel of Germany (254.05)
Stahl though executed a superb Reverse 2 ½ Somersaults Pike
to be awarded 8s across the board for 72.00 overall
The Swede extended her lead to 13.70pts with 330.35 ahead of Karnafel (316.65) and De Sanctis who moved into the medal positions with 305.35
closely followed by Germany’s Vanessa Roehniss (302.35)
The lead traded hands in the third round with Karnafel heading the standings following her Reverse 2 ½ Somersaults Pike before Stahl returned to top spot with an excellent Back 2 ½ Somersaults Pike
It meant Stahl led the way into the final round with 390.35 ahead of Karnafel (378.15) and Italian Rebecca Ciancaglini who had moved into third with 363.15 followed by Roehniss and De Sanctis
Roehniss went ahead with her final effort before Karnafel earned 7s for her Inward 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck to go into the lead with two divers remaining
Stahl though once again produced an excellent
clean dive with plenty of height to earn 7.5s and 8s from the judges for her Forward 2 ½ Somersaults Pike
That restored her to the head of the standings and although De Sanctis didn’t threaten the lead
she scored 61.60 for her Back 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck to move into third position with the last dive of the competition
Stahl took gold with 445.55 ahead of Karnafel (434.85) and De Sanctis (419.45)
Victory was a surprise for Stahl who said: “I didn’t expect to come first because my competitors are really good.”
De Sanctis added: “I am really happy to achieve this medal
I’m so excited and I don’t know what to say.”
Germany and Ukraine enjoyed a glittering second day at the European Junior Diving Championships 2024 in Poland
as they claimed nine medals between them on a busy day for the continent’s top young divers
Competition began at the Rzeszow Diving Arena with the Boys B 1m Springboard final
which saw the top-12 athletes competing for gold
after being cut from the 19 that contested the heats earlier in the day
After taking gold in the Team Event on the first day
Germany continued producing the goods as the individual divers took to the boards
with Finn Awe leading the pack through both the preliminary and final sessions
Awe rounded off his dives with a score of 62.40 on his Forward 1 ½ Somersaults 2 Twists Free (5134D) to finish on 403.00
11 points ahead of Ukrainian Valerii Malieiev who took silver
The pair were both comfortably ahead of Awe’s teammate
who claimed bronze with a total score of 370.35
Awe was visibly delighted following his victory and spoke of his feelings before he made that final dive to seal the result
“It’s really amazing,” said the 15-year old
The competition has been great so far and the team has been very loud.”
saying: “I’m happy to have won my first silver medal at the European Junior Championships
this is my first medal at such a competition
I want to thank the whole team who were supporting me.”
It was once again the turn of the German team to take gold
as Nina Berger came out on top of three-way battle for the Girls B 3m Springboard title
which saw first to third separated by just one point
After qualifying in third from the prelims
Berger knew she had more to do in the final once the points from the required dives carried over
It wasn’t until the second of her three dives where she made her move – scoring 58.80 on her Reverse 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck (305C) to put her just five points behind eventual silver medallist
It was on the final round where the pecking order started to truly change
with Berger opting for the dive with the lower degree of difficulty to score 59.40 on her Inward 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck (405C)
they switched positions with the tightest of margins
as Berger finished on 353.85 to the Ukrainian’s 353.15
The bronze medal was also decided on the final dive
as Germany’s Zoe Marie Schneider performed the highest-scoring dive of the event to leapfrog herself into third
Her own Inward 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck (405C) gave her a massive 64.80 points as she finished on a score of 352.55
Attention then turned to the synchro events
which both featured a high number of athletes vying for the medals
The Boys A/B Synchro Platform was a two-team affair
as Ukraine and Italy went toe-to-toe over five rounds of dives – in the end being separated by just eight points
The first two rounds of required dives went without a hitch for both pairs
before Italy struck first with a stunning Back 2 ½ Somersaults 1 ½ Twists Pike (5253B) to take the lead after the third round
Despite scoring two more 70+ dives in the final two rounds
it was the Ukrainian pairing of Danylo Avanesov and Marko Barsukov who managed to get their hands on the gold
thanks to a score of 76.80 on their Inward 3 ½ Somersaults Tuck (407C)
before a similar score of 75.84 gave them a winning total of 314.64
Italy’s Raffaele Pelligra and Simone Conte did enough for silver on a score of 306.24
with Great Britain taking their second medal of the competition through Jorden Fisher-Eames and Robbie Wood
The final event of the night saw a dominant performance from Ukraine’s Alisa Mieshkova and Diana Shevchenko
who led right the way through the five rounds of dives on their way to gold
Although not putting in any significantly higher-scoring dives than their competitors
they did still manage a general trend through the rounds with their highest score of 55.68 coming from their Forward 2 ½ Somersaults 1 Twist Pike (5152B) on the final round
Great Britain’s Libby Duke and Kate Gardener continued to add to the country’s tally with a respectable silver medal on 241.35
also by putting in three dives over 50 points
Germany’s Jule Leonie Eisenberg and Charlotte Lederer did enough to ensure they were on the podium for all but one event on the night
thanks in the most part to a huge score of 57.12 in the third round for their Inward 2 ½ Somersaults Pike (405B)
The fourth day of competition at the European Junior Diving Championships 2024 saw six nations feature on the podium across three exhilarating events at the Rzeszów Diving Arena
Following on from what have already been three days of incredible action
as well as a jam-packed prelims session on Thursday morning
the Ukrainian pairing of Kesniia Bochek and Yelyzaveta Diadiuk took respective gold and silver in the Girls B 1m Springboard final
with Bochek finishing 28 points ahead of her teammate
Having finished in fifth place in the event at last year’s edition
the 2009-born athlete looked determined in her pursuit of the gold that would eventually come her way and was the only athlete in the field to achieve scores of 50 or more in all three of her final dives
Her Forward 2 ½ Somersaults Pike (105B) was the pick of the dives
scoring her 54.60 in the penultimate round before she maintained her dominance to finish on the top step of the podium with a huge score of 347.10
The battle for the other medals was a much more tense affair
Diadiuk fell as low as fourth at some points in the final three dives
with Bulgaria’s Iva Ereminova and Germany’s Nina Berger going dive-for-dive with each other through the rounds
Diadiuk put in the highest-scoring dive of the group to leapfrog Ereminova into the silver medal position
as her Forward 2 ½ Somersaults Pike (105B) proved most fruitful for her with a score of 50.70 points
adding to what has already been a great competition for the Eastern European nation
with Berger agonisingly missing out in fourth
The Boys B Platform final saw a similar level of dominance
with Great Britain’s Robbie Wood putting in two 70+ scores on his way to the gold medal
The emerging athlete was in first place right the way through the four-round final
with some memorable dives on the way to glory
There was no argument as to the best dive of his list with his Reverse 2 ½ Somersaults Tuck (305C) wowed both the judges and the crowd to score him a huge 75.60 and help him on his way to a total of 436.20
Italy’s silver medallist Davide Barberi didn’t have it all his own way in his pursuit for the podium
as he was engaged in a fierce battle with Switzerland’s Erik Passerone and Ukraine’s Valerii Malieiev right the way through to the final dives
Barberi showed his class when it came to the business-end of the competition to claim the runner-up position
thanks to a stunning Back 3 ½ Somersaults Tuck (307C)
which scored him 70.95 and saw him just shy of breaking the 400-point barrier on 399.15
with Malieiev just missing out on the medals in fourth on 393.75
The final event of the night provided a tighter competition for the gold
as Italy’s Valerio Mosca and Matteo Santoro went head-to-head with Ukraine’s Kyrylo Azarov and Maksym Mirza over the five rounds of dives
The two required rounds of dives went without a hitch for most of the 10 teams
before the Italians made a move on round three
executing a solid Forward 2 ½ Somersaults 1 Twist Pike (5152B) to give them a comfortable lead with two rounds to go
It was the Ukrainian pairing that managed the highest-scoring dive of the event to close the gap on the penultimate round
with their Forward 2 ½ Somersaults 2 Twists Pike (5154B) earning a huge 78.54 points and putting them within six points of the gold ahead of the final round
It was Santoro and Mosca who held their nerve under pressure to seal a second gold medal of the competition for the country
as their Forward 3 1/2 Somersaults Pike (107B) saw them come out on top with a score of 75.33 to Ukraine’s 72.54
The final scores were 320.43 to Italy with Ukraine’s 311.88 good enough for silver
Croatia took their first medal of the competition so far
with Luka Martinovic and Matej Nevescanin doing enough for a clear third place on 296.43

Poland is stepping up security measures around Rzeszów-Jasionka airport – the main transit hub for foreign aid to Ukraine – due to recent cases of sabotage that are believed to have been carried out on behalf of Russia
“We are facing a foreign state that is conducting hostile and — in military parlance — kinetic action on Polish territory,” interior minister Tomasz Siemoniak told Bloomberg
“There has never been anything like this before.”
Siemoniak confirmed that security at the airport had been increased
though without specifying what particular measures had been taken

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed that Russia was “likely” to have been behind a fire that recently destroyed Warsaw’s largest shopping centre
On Monday, he announced that nine people had been charged with carrying out sabotage on behalf of Russia
though at least one of those cases relates to a person detained in January
he announced that a further three people had been detained overnight
In December, fourteen foreign nationals – most of them Ukrainian citizens – were found guilty of espionage and planned sabotage on behalf of Russia
Among the targets they observed were the airport and train station in Rzeszów
It is “likely” that Russia was involved in the fire that recently destroyed Warsaw’s largest shopping centre
However, he added that investigations are still ongoing https://t.co/SipJtSLIpQ

Siemoniak told Bloomberg that recent acts of sabotage had been ordered by Russia’s GRU military intelligence service
which he noted was also carrying out similar actions in other parts of Europe
such as football hooligans or organised crime groups
“[This is] a very serious situation,” said Siemoniak
“We’re no longer talking about agents of influence or some online activities
These are individuals who are ready to come and set things on fire.”
Nine people have been charged in Poland on suspicion of sabotage on behalf of the Kremlin, says @donaldtusk, who warns that the region is facing a "very serious" threat from Russia https://t.co/zJlt9cwdJP

In April, two men – both Polish citizens – were detained in Poland on suspicion of carrying out an attack on Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov in Lithuania
A day earlier, another Polish national was detained on suspicion of helping Russian intelligence with a planned assassination attempt against Volodymyr Zelensky
Among the tasks reportedly assigned to the man was gathering information on security at Rzeszów airport
As Poland’s closest major airport to Ukraine
Rzeszów-Jasionka has become the main transport point for Western weapons and other aid being sent to Ukraine
as well as the main stopover point for officials travelling to and from Ukraine
Poland has arrested one of its own citizens on suspicion of cooperating with Russian intelligence, including on plans for an assassination attempt against @ZelenskyyUa while the Ukrainian president was travelling through Poland https://t.co/UIjlElXf2K

(ANS – Rzeszów) – On Sunday 6 October 2024
the Divine Providence and Saint John Bosco Parish celebrated the jubilee of the 40th anniversary of the apostolate of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Rzeszów
The Solemn anniversary Mass was presided over by the Superior of the Saint Hyacinth Province of Krakow
The history of the work on the portal of the Diocese of Rzeszów says “In 1985
at the invitation of Bishop Ignacy Takarczuk
the Salesians arrived in Rzeszów and undertook the pastoral ministry in the New City
in the parish of Divine Providence erected on 29 August 1985
separated from the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The pastoral activities began in the barracks-garage purchased by the Provincial Building Cooperative
Here a temporary tin chapel and a Catechetical ‘Oratorium' House have been opened."
the youth house and the residential area began in 1990
was suspended due to a fire in the scaffolding inside the church on 11 June 1996
The church and youth complex is a Monument to the Year 2000; the church was in fact consecrated on 12 November 2000 by Card
The celebrations for the 40th anniversary were attended by 11 Salesians who worked there in recent years
who supported the construction of this work from the beginning; Fr Krzysztof Gołąbek

The parish community expressed gratitude and joy for the fruits of the Salesians' work in the New City of Rzeszów
in these 40 years 55 priests have served the parish
thanks were given to God for the gift of this community
for all those who supported it with prayer
and for the many who still continue to do so
We also prayed for those whom the Lord has called to eternity
for the six priests who currently work in the parish and for the many people who have committed themselves to establishing this work
Fr Kaznowski recalled the importance of community
encourages work on oneself in the journey of faith
teaches patience and cooperation in the pursuit of the most important goal: salvation
The Provincial also observed the action of Providence in the arrival of the Salesians in Rzeszów
stating: "The Lord has chosen this place to listen to us"; finally
he dedicated the statue of Blessed Józef Kowalski
together with the statues of Saint Francis de Sales
Saint John Bosco and Blessed Augustus Czartoryski
