By submitting the above I agree to the privacy policy and terms of use of JTA.org How does the Jewish blockbuster compare to history (JTA) — Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle” is one of the most Jewish Hollywood films ever Rogen plays two Jewish family members separated by a century: Ben Greenbaum a young app developer who lives in Brooklyn his great-grandfather from the old country who falls into a vat of pickles and stays perfectly preserved in brine for 100 years It’s all based on a New Yorker novella called “Sell Out,” published by Jewish writer Simon Rich in 2013 The comedy is at heart a tale about Jewish legacy and identity — but its far-fetched premise also lets it play fast and loose with historical facts Simon Rich’s story is semi-autobiographical magical realism (even sci-fi?) — the main characters of the story are Rich himself and a fictionalized version of his own great-grandfather (Rich’s father Frank is a prominent journalist who wrote for The New York Times for years and now writes for New York Magazine It’s pretty different in a lot of major ways in “Sell Out,” there aren’t many details of Herschel’s pre-U.S the viewer meets Herschel in a town named Schlupsk (more on that below) where he has the glamorous occupation of “ditch digger.” In “Sell Out,” Simon is not an app developer Novak even makes an appearance in the piece.) Rich’s dating life is also explored in the story in the way that Ben’s love life is not — Simon is dating a non-Jewish woman named Claire fans of “An American Pickle” will highly enjoy “Sell Out.” There is a real town named Slupsk in the Pomeranian region of Poland — though there isn’t one called Schlupsk, with that “ch.” Back in Herschel’s time, the early 1900s, the real Slupsk was actually part of Prussia, which would become Germany. According to the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews the Jews of Slupsk lived a fairly peaceful life until the rise of Nazism in Germany Simon Rich’s great-grandfather is also from Slupsk (no “ch”) is “near the Poland-Lithuania border.” That’s not where the real Slupsk is and it becomes a joke — when Simon tells Claire where his great-grandfather is from He seems very proud of knowing this one fact about me.” So it’s not clear that Slupsk and the town of Schlupsk in this movie are the same the term refers to an ethnicity of Slavic Orthodox Christians that traces its roots to early Ukraine and Russia The Cossacks formed their own autonomous states and are known for being militant — especially against Jews in the region They enacted pogroms against their Jewish neighbors for centuries when Herschel’s wedding to Sarah (which Cossacks attack) takes place many pogroms took place across the lands of what are now Poland and Ukraine Yes. There were two big waves of Jewish immigration in the late 1800s and early 1900s, mostly those escaping the pogroms of Eastern Europe. By 1914, there were 1.5 million Jews in New York While originally many Jews settled in the Lower East Side of Manhattan the opening of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903 made it possible to live in Brooklyn yet work in Manhattan specifically to Williamsburg and Borough Park As this New Yorker review points out that is not likely — both cars and skyscrapers existed in the 1920s While the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building other skyscrapers already filled the New York skyline by 1920 As for taxis, the New York Taxicab Company already had 700 vehicles driving passengers around the city by 1908 Seltzer was also big in New York of the early 20th century It was especially popular among the Jewish immigrants to the city and was nicknamed “Jewish champagne.” It was available at pharmacies and soda fountains and through seltzer carts that filled the streets of the Lower East Side The carbonated drink became especially popular during Prohibition JTA has documented Jewish history in real-time for over a century Keep our journalism strong by joining us in supporting independent I accept the Privacy Policy This work, $17M BOS Contract Option Awarded for NSF Redzikowo, Poland, by Anthony Cage, identified by DVIDS, must comply with the restrictions shown on https://www.dvidshub.net/about/copyright the new band featuring former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson Swedish guitarist/vocalist Guilherme Miranda (formerly of ENTOMBED A.D.) and drummer Michał Łysejko (ex-DECAPITATED), performed on June 12 at Motor Rock Pub in Słupsk Fan-filmed video of the concert can be seen below The LP includes the song "Walk With Me Forever" featuring the first-ever solo lead vocal performance of Ellefson's career The track's haunting accompanying music video shows Ellefson narrating a story of love and loss directed by Oskar Szramka and starring notable Polish actors Jan Napieralski and Agnieszka Goździewicz with mixing and mastering by Tomasz Zed Zalewski at Zed Studios in Chechło the LP represents new beginnings — musically lyrically and for the band members themselves Weaving a sinister thread of unrelenting tech-steeped death metal and rapid thrash bangers the members of DIETH have pushed beyond the stereotypes of their former genres to create an unexpected yet charismatic and dynamic new sonic footprint Met with acclaim from both fans and media alike the surprise track marked the exciting resurgence of these three renowned musicians coming together as a new musical force after years of silence Opening with an entrancing acoustic introduction first track "To Hell And Back" quickly slams in with a punishing death metal attack Tracks like "Dead Inside" and "Don't Get Mad … Get Even!" showcase the thrash-infused side of DIETH while death metal anthems such as "Wicked Disdain" and "The Mark Of Cain" lean diabolical with hair-raising solos and breakneck paced rhythms backed by crushing walls of aggression Standout "Free Us All" flirts with the record's pace by blending winding passages and aggression with throwback bass-driven interludes with psychedelic production followed by "Heavy Is The Crown" — a slow-and-low grinder featuring stoner metal groove powerful ballad "Walk With Me Forever" showcases Ellefson's lead vocal performance debut singing about the intense loss of a loved one and their memory providing the strength to carry on Ending with intensely beautiful "Severance" "To Hell And Back" proves that DIETH isn't just another side project or "supergroup" but rather the collective reincarnation of three renowned heavy metal forces who have delivered an exciting next chapter no metal fan will want to miss Ellefson says about the new album: "This album has been a terrific collaboration building upon our past as we created a new sound together.. we're looking forward to unleashing the fury!" Europe on issues that include abortion But a charismatic 40-year-old mayor is leading a counter-cultural charge from the Baltic coast city of Słupsk Robert Biedroń, the country’s only openly gay mayor, has become one of the leading voices of opposition to the nationalist Law and Justice Party igniting hope among liberal commentators who have suggested he should run for president in 2020 Biedroń is proving to be a very different kind of Polish politician — one who openly embraces secular and liberal values as well as a radical open-door policy there are no security checks en route to his office and it’s common for people to grab him in the corridor to speak he will even take a red sofa into town and invite people to sit down and chat This “red sofa method,” he says is a way to gather information about voters’ concerns “I spend all day in a castle,” Biedroń said during an interview in the city hall “But I will not close myself in a mental castle I cannot make decisions unless I feel the heart of the city.” Biedron speaking on homophobia in Poland | Janek Skarzynski/AFP via Getty Images a pensioner walked straight into his office saying “I really need to sit down and talk to you Mayor.” A woman grabbed him in the corridor to explain a parking problem Someone else was shocked the mayor didn’t instantly recollect her name “He is trying to show how local administration and democracy should really work,” said a 30-year-old resident of Słupsk named Michał “That they should mean serving people is on a mission to cut the €63 million deficit he has managed to bring it down 10 percent making the town hall a paragon of frugality: volunteering for a salary cut and giving up his official limousine to bike to work Visitors are offered water from the tap instead of bottled water he removed a portrait of Pope John Paul II arguing state institutions should be secular in response to an anti-migrant social media post by a Słupsk teacher he brought a refugee family to her class to challenge her views Couples from across Poland have journeyed to Słupsk to have Biedroń solemnize their ceremonies More recently, he has denounced the hardline abortion legislation before parliament which would completely ban the procedure and has warned that Poland is at risk of becoming an “authoritarian democracy.” A long-term activist for LGBT rights, Biedroń became Poland’s first openly gay member of parliament running for the liberal Palikot Movement “But I knew this was the only way: If people were not directly confronted with me they wouldn’t have a chance to change their minds about gays.” Although Poland doesn’t allow civil partnership for gays couples from across Poland have journeyed to Słupsk to have Biedroń solemnize their ceremonies voters backed him because they felt he was listening to them But he also cleverly tapped into Słupsk’s resentment at being overshadowed by bigger nearby cities such as Gdańsk and displayed a knack for retail politics winning the mayoral seat by running a door-to-door cashless campaign The columnist Witold Gadomski described him as “one of the most interesting Polish politicians” in the pages of the Gazeta Wyborcza writing: “All parties that aren’t xenophobic nationalist and narrow-minded should fight for him.” Biedroń’s success in Słupsk underlines that Poland is a complicated place politically especially since elections last year when the Law and Justice Party’s victory effectively split the country into two hostile camps While Law and Justice tends to do best in smaller towns and villages where many people are upset over the turbulence of a quarter century of post-communist economic reforms the small town of Słupsk doesn’t quite fit that profile it is less religious and more liberal than the east The distance from the country’s two leading parties makes Biedroń something of a fresh voice in Polish politics Biedroń describes it as a place where “everyone is a refugee,” alluding to its turbulent history The city was German and known as Stolp until the end of the Second World War Ukrainians and others from the East were settled in Słupsk replacing relocated Germans and murdered Jews Situated about 20 kilometers from the Baltic Sea the city is green and compact and Biedroń’s administration has started to get rid of cars in the old town to make space for a pedestrian area with benches businesses in the city center get property tax breaks to encourage them to stay but a national path would not be without obstacles the liberal opposition is fragmented with no party coming close to Law and Justice in the polls Biedron speaks in Polish Parliament in Warsaw | Janel Skarzynski/AFP via Getty Images Biedroń himself has refused to entertain speculations about running for national office the government’s right-wing policies have made Biedroń more visible on the national stage as a voice of opposition “What’s now being served to us is a political roller-coaster ride with no safety restraints and we don’t know where it will end,” he recently told the news portal onet.pl He does allow that the ruling party’s popular and generous social promises especially a subsidy paid to families with many children Biedroń is politically very far removed from the Law and Justice Party And he is no fan of the Civic Platform Party that ruled Poland from 2007-2015 Civic Platform and its leader, then-prime minister Donald Tusk — now European Council president — balked at pushing through socially liberal reforms afraid of alienating more conservative voters and the powerful Roman Catholic Church “Donald Tusk also promised a law on civil partnerships and [said] that he wouldn’t kneel in front of priests That distance from the country’s two leading parties makes Biedroń something of a fresh voice in Polish politics he says his political ambitions are limited to Słupsk I am there when they get born and die,” Biedroń said Also On POLITICO Polish parliament rejects 2023 The discovery of munitions, weapons and other material from World War Two is common in Poland, which saw intense fighting after being invaded and occupied by both Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939 In July 2023, workers carrying out renovation at a primary school in central Poland discovered dozens of unexploded artillery shells from the war The following month, nearly 14,000 people were advised to leave their homes in the city of Lublin while army sappers removed a 250kg aerial bomb discovered during construction work Following the latest discovery, the Słupsk police reminded the public that they should immediately report the discovery of suspicious objects. MFW Bałtyk II and MFW Bałtyk III, located in the Baltic Sea approximately 27 km and 40 km from the port of Łeba, are two of the largest and most advanced offshore wind farms being developed in Poland. Once operational, the wind farms will have a total installed capacity of 1440 MW, enough to power more than 2 million Polish homes. In addition, Hitachi Energy is also responsible for delivery of the overall power control system, overall telecom network, all high voltage equipment at the offshore substation and the onshore substation, as well as turnkey delivery of the whole onshore substation. The contract also covers interface work at the grid connection in Slupsk. “This is another key milestone for these offshore wind projects, which will supply domestically produced renewable energy to the Polish power grid. We look forward to working with Hitachi Energy in Poland and their local subcontractors on bringing this competitive source of renewable energy to Poland,” says Michał Kołodziejczyk, country manager of Equinor in Poland. “Earlier this year Equinor signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Hitachi Energy to work more closely together on future projects. This contract is the first since then, and we are very pleased to move into execution of our collaboration. We look forward to developing a local supply chain for electrical infrastructure to offshore wind farms along with Hitachi Energy in Poland,” says Mette H. Ottøy, chief procurement officer in Equinor. Hitachi Energy has been present in Poland for 97 years, and have approximately 2.500 employees in Poland, with offices, technology, research and engineering centers in Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Lublin, Katowice, Poznań and Gdańsk, as well as factories in Łódź and Przasnysz. The contract targets between 25% and 35% of the contract value to be invested locally. This is based on the total contract value, including equipment procurement from 3rd parties. The combined capacity of both projects (1440 MW) represents a substantial part of the first phase of Polish offshore wind industry development scheme with a total capacity of 5900 MW. MFW Bałtyk II and III were awarded Contracts for Difference (CfDs) in May 2021 by Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office (ERO). The final investment decision for both projects is subject to obtaining the necessary permits and is planned for 2024 with the first power delivered to the grid in 2027. Equinor: Magnus F. Despite a recent survey by European industry association WindEurope showing that only 2 GW of the 20 GW of offshore wind capacity currently installed in European waters is located in the Baltic Sea by 2030 this figure could rise to as much as 9 GW The right governmental initiative could see this figure even increase to above 14 GW And Poland is apparently hell-bent on contributing a considerable proportion of this capacity the country could soon be generating ten or even twelve GW of offshore electricity using technology that is already available today The nation is looking to harness this potential in order to give its power supply a sustainable foundation In order to meet its international climate commitments, Poland must ensure that renewables account for at least 35 percent of its electricity consumption by 2030. According to figures from the national statistics authority in 2018 the renewables share was at a mere eleven percent If the country wants to avoid becoming dependent on sizeable electricity imports in the medium term, the development of new generation capacity seems inevitable even now: According to a study conducted by the Polish think tank Forum Energii Poland’s capacity requirements will increase significantly by the middle of the century: from 43 GW in 2017 to at least 60 GW plants contributing around 14 GW would be decommissioned by the mid-2030s; i.e mainly coal-fired power stations reaching the end of their service life It would seem as though Poland is intent on using wind power from the Baltic Sea to account for a considerable proportion of the necessary additional capacity. All in all, there are 13 offshore wind projects underway, reports the Dutch industry portal OffshoreWIND.biz 10 GW of generation capacity will be installed by 2040 this means that up to 25 percent of Poland’s electricity could be accounted for According to the business development agency GTAI (in German) two projects of the joint venture between the Polish energy company Polenergia and Equinor have progressed the most the Norwegian state-owned group had already secured a 50 percent share of each of the wind farms both companies announced that they also intend to collaborate on the development of Baltyk I All projects together have total capacity of 3 GW Power is expected to be generated from 2025 also intends to harness wind power in the Baltic Sea in due course PGE is set on starting construction of a 1 GW farm in 2023 An additional 1.5 GW should also be installed by 2030 announced that talks were underway to discuss a 50% stake for the Danes in each of the two projects Orsted is the world’s largest operator of offshore wind farms with an installed capacity of 7.45 GW across North America Offshore wind’s new number two has also joined the fray in Poland: In November RWE Renewables acquired licences for four offshore projects having a total capacity of 1.5 GW which are all at different stages of development are located on the Slupsk sandbank in the central Polish Baltic Sea region Development activities are well underway and will be ongoing over the next few years with the aim of starting construction as early as 2023 Since the asset swap with E.ON in October 2019 the newly founded RWE subsidiary has operated offshore plants with an installed capacity of 2.5 GW But the business is by no means the new kid on the block when it comes to the Baltic Sea region: Since 2019 the largest offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea to date has been supplying up to 400,000 households with renewable energy Arkona is located 35 kilometres north-east of Rügen and is not far from the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone We encounter energy everywhere – at home, on the street, in the office and on the workbench. But what exactly is energy? How and from what is it made? How is it stored, transported and converted? The questions abound, answers to which are provided by this blog – exciting, snappy and always up to date. Stal’s offense was sizzling against the King as the team clicked on 70% of their two-point shots and 48% of their three-point shots They also nabbed 17 out of 25 free-throws because of their aggressiveness Adonis and Damian Kulig combined for 41 points and that was the decisive factor Czarni has shown strong defense thus far and that seems to be their strength in the early going Czarni
