Two priests from a Catholic diocese in Poland that has been hit by a series of scandals in recent years have been charged with sexual offences against minors
A third former priest from the same diocese has also been charged with fraud allegedly committed during his time as a clergyman
A priest has been given an 18-month prison sentence after being found guilty of four charges relating to a drug-fuelled sex party he held with two men in his apartment
The case caused a scandal last year and led to the resignation of the local bishop https://t.co/JJbCtoLMxv

The first of the accused is a 63-year-old priest (who
He has been charged with committing two sexual offences against minors and placed in pretrial detention
was charged with a total of nine “offences against sexual freedom and morals to the detriment of identified minors”
He has not been held in custody but is subject to police supervision and is banned from contact with the victims and working with children
Prosecutors did not disclose details of the alleged acts carried out by the men
a spokesman for the Sosnowiec district prosecutor’s office
indicated that 11 children had been victims of the priests
Explaining why only one of the accused has been placed in detention
Kilian told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that it is because the “reprehensibility and social harmfulness of the conduct committed by the detained suspect far exceeds the offences committed by the suspect who was released”
He heard a charge of two counts of fraud relating to the time when he was still a priest
Following news of the arrests on Wednesday
Sosnowiec diocese issued a statement saying that one of the clergymen accused of sexual abuse had been banned from public pastoral ministry for over a year and prohibited from contacting children and youth
“This occurred after a report of a potential criminal act received by the then bishop,” said diocese spokesman Przemysław Lech
“[Since then] the priest was away from the parish
in a place designated by the bishop.”
The second of the priests charged with abuse was suspended from his duties as a parish priest by the church on Wednesday
he was banned from having contact with children
He was transferred to the lay state in 2019
The diocesan curia has not known his whereabouts since 2016,” Lech added

The proceedings against the three men were initiated based on material obtained during another investigation conducted in the Sosnowiec diocese into the murder of a 26-year-old deacon at a church property last year
the man was killed by a 40-year-old priest
who shot him six times and stabbed him multiple times and then took his own life
Proceedings in this case were discontinued due to the death of the perpetrator
told PAP that the diocese is establishing a commission to “investigate the events that have stirred public opinion”
A Polish bishop has resigned following reports that a priest in his diocese organised a “sex party” at which a male prostitute lost consciousness and was denied medical treatment
The bishop asked for forgiveness and apologised "if I have offended anyone" https://t.co/spnA6GAc9X

whose rescue actions were guided by the principle 'All for one and one for all'
I can't recall coming across another group like this: So focused during all the years of the war
so independent and determined to help others
and to save friends and fight the Germans at risk to their own lives."
Manus Diamant wrote these words about his friends
members of the "Nasza Grupa" ("our group" in Polish)
most 16-25 years old from the "Hanoar Hazioni" youth movement
who gathered together in early 1942 in the Zaglembie (Zagłębie) region in northwest Poland
attempted to prevent the deportation of Jews to Auschwitz
obtained false documents for young Jewish men and women
Approximately 50 members of the group survived
leader of "Hanoar Hazioni" in Sosnowiec
and director of the youth department in the Judenrat
left his position at the Judenrat after refusing to cooperate in the organization of deportations from Zaglembie that began in the spring of 1942
during the "Big Punkt" Aktion (the deportation of some 12,500 Jews from Zaglembie to Auschwitz)
members of "Hanoar Hazioni" worked to save Jews and to smuggle them from their houses
where they crowded together waiting for deportation
an activist in "Hanoar Hazioni" walked around in a nurse's uniform during the Aktion:
which is what saved me during the war years
during an Aktion I was permitted to walk amongst people and offer them help […] I always wore two nurse coats
most important assistance was my coat […] I could give some girl
and then she could walk around like a nurse."
activists in various pioneer youth movements in the area entered "Farma"
a Hachshara (Zionist pioneer training) farm in Bendzin (Będzin)
and decided to establish a resistance movement that would mount an armed struggle against the deportations
This decision was inspired by Mordechai Anielewicz
The underground movement included groups from the "Hashomer Hatzair"
"Hashomer Hadati" and "Hanoar Hazioni" youth movements
They did not succeed in making contact with the Polish underground
and only managed to obtain a small number of weapons
They came up against opposition from Moshe Merin
head of the central Judenrat in Sosnowiec and Chaim Molczadski
who saw them as reckless youngsters whose actions would prove disastrous for all the Jews
Merin handed ten underground activists disseminating anti-German propaganda over to the Germans
a rescue opportunity presented itself in the form of South American passports that members of the Hechalutz in Switzerland sent to Zaglembie
These documents allowed Jews to enter detention camps for foreign citizens
where they could stay until the end of the war
there was a difference of opinion between those who favored armed resistance
and members of "Gordonia" and "Hanoar Hazioni"
who were beginning to think that escape was the answer
Information about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in April 1943 only served to deepen the rift
and an argument flared amongst the members of the pioneer underground as to how to move forward
Members of "Dror" and "Hashomer Hatzair" wanted to continue the armed struggle in the cities of Zaglembie
whereas most of the members of "Hanoar Hazioni" saw the main focus as rescuing Jews and smuggling them out of Poland
the deportation of Zaglembie's Jews to Auschwitz recommenced
Moshe Merin and some of his senior assistants were deported to Auschwitz
the liquidation of the ghettos in Zaglembie began
and some 30,000 Jews from Bendzin and Sosnowiec were deported to Auschwitz
The first escapees reached Hungary in September 1943
This group joined forces with "Hanoar Hazioni" in Hungary
and inspired the youth movements in Hungary to engage in underground activity together with "Hashomer Hatzair" in Hungary
traveled to peripheral areas to warn the Jews of what was coming
and prepared bunkers for the eventuality of the German occupation of Hungary – which is indeed what occurred in March 1944
they worked to find escape routes for the Jews
"Nasza Grupa" member Pinek Trajman was one of those who located the escape routes to Romania
members of the "Nasza Grupa" were arrested and imprisoned time and time again
which necessitated their release and the issue of new forged documents for them
"[Nasza Grupa member] Ruth Landau's parents and seven-year-old brother were caught when trying to cross the border posing as Polish Christians
I told the German [a German officer whom Yaakov had befriended] about them and asked him to find out how they were […] I gave him money and explained how he should act […] We arranged that he would bring them to me
at the coffee house […] and the family did reach me […] Ruth's parents couldn't believe that they had been rescued
and wanted to know how I'd managed to organize their release
"Now find yourselves an apartment"
One group of the "Nasza Grupa" travelled towards the border with Yugoslavia
and they reached the border city of Mohács
they identified a Jew who had collaborated in betraying Jews to the Nazis in Poland
The task of carrying out of the sentence was given to three members of the group: Alex Gutman-Gathmon
born in Tarnow who joined "Hanoar Hazioni" in Hungary; and Dina Firstenberg-Gilboa
a member of "Hanoar Hazioni" in Sosnowiec
approximately 16 members of the group were arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned
and the rest of those detained were released
The three endured terrible torture and were handed over to the Hungarian authorities who transferred them to prison in the city of Pecs
Their comrades tried everything to rescue them
whose name featured on the list of people wanted for the same crime
reached the prison with the help of forged Red Cross papers to bring us an escape plan
and asked her in Polish: 'Did they torture you?' She lifted her eyes
at the bottom of which was the escape plan."
All the rescue attempts of the three detainees were unsuccessful
The date of their execution was set for 29 November 1944
the Soviets arrived and liberated the prison
More than 60 members of "Hanoar Hazioni" who were active in the "Nasza Grupa"
many of the group's survivors immigrated to Eretz Israel
solidarity and the feeling of extended family stayed with the group members in Eretz Israel too
and was a source of strength and support as they rebuilt their lives and contributed to the fledgling State and its security
Members of the group were amongst the founders of "Masuah"
Emil Brig was awarded the title "Hero of Israel" for his bravery in the War of Independence
Manus Diamant took part in Eichmann's capture
Alex Gutman Gatmon was an emissary of the Mossad
and commander of the secret operation to bring the Jews of Morocco to Israel
Tusia Herzberg was awarded the President's Medal for her volunteer work in impoverished neighborhoods
and for establishing the first after-school club for children in Israel
members of the "Nasza Grupa" and their families have been getting together each year on 29 November
Emil and Dina were saved from certain death
three survivors of the "Nasza Grupa"
Ruth Hilman-Landau and Shoshana Shalev held a gathering with their families and with members of the second
third and fourth generation members of the group
In 2020, "Nasza Grupa" survivors Fela Trajman and Linka Rosenberg, and Toshia Herzberg's daughter Rina Dayagi, donated photographs and documents relating to the story of the "Nasza Grupa" to Yad Vashem as part of the national project "Gathering the Fragments"

The Vatican has accepted the resignation of Grzegorz Kaszak
No official reason has been given for his departure
but it comes following a scandal over reports that a priest in his diocese organised a “sex party” at which a male prostitute lost consciousness and was denied medical treatment
the apostolic nuncio in Poland – the Vatican’s ambassador – announced that Kaszak’s resignation had been accepted by Pope Francis and that Adrian Galbasa
the diocese of Sosnowiec published a resignation letter from Kaszak
He “asked everyone to forgive my human limitations” and added that “if I have offended anyone or neglected anyething
the letter gave no reason for his departure
Kaszak’s resignation has been widely interpreted as a response to the scandal that emerged last month over media reports that a group of priests organised a “sex party” in an apartment belonging to their parish at which a male prostitute lost consciousness and was initially denied medical assistance
the local Catholic curia confirmed that there had been an incident involving the “intervention of an ambulance and police” and said that the bishop had appointed a commission to urgently explain what had happened
The priest in whose apartment the alleged incident took place – who can be named only as Tomasz Z
under Polish privacy law – was removed from all ecclesiastical duties “until the matter is clarified”
Prosecutors also confirmed that they are investigating the incident
Kaszak himself published a letter saying that he “apologises to all those who were affected and saddened
by the… painful events” and the “ashamed priests” involved

the diocese of Sosnowiec announced that its commission had established that “Father Tomasz Z.
committed a very serious violation of moral norms
which the church does not consent to and strongly condemns”
It added that “Father Tomasz Z.’s conduct seriously violated the obligations arising from the clerical state
which may be considered a crime within the meaning of canon law”
“Taking into account the great scandal among the faithful
the bishop of Sosnowiec decided to initiate proceedings
under which the most severe church penalties
could be applied to the priest,” it concluded
"Fakty ustalone przez Komisję pozwoliły stwierdzić, że ks. Tomasz Z. wraz z dwiema innymi osobami świeckimi dopuścił się bardzo poważnego złamania norm moralnych, na co Kościół nie wyraża zgody i co zdecydowanie potępia" – podkreśla diecezja sosnowiecka.https://t.co/EmKQ1215vm

Speaking after the bishop’s resignation today
told news website Onet that it was a “good decision” and that “the Vatican had no other choice” given “the endless scandals in the Sosnowiec diocese”
the rector of a seminary in Sosnowiec reportedly got into a fight in a gay club
He subsequently continued to serve in his position for a year and a half until the Vatican intervened and closed down the seminary
a deacon was found dead at a church property in the diocese
Prosecutors established he had been murdered by a priest
who then took his own life by jumping in front of a train
today called Kaszak’s departure “a very good move by Pope Francis” but said that it “should have happened earlier”
although the bishop had officially resigned
it seemed clear that he was “encouraged” to do so by the Vatican

Senior figures in Poland’s Catholic church have been at the forefront of a campaign in recent years against what they call “LGBT ideology”. The archbishop of Kraków, Marek Jędraszewski, has likened that “rainbow plague” to communism and Nazism
In 2020, the Polish Episcopal Conference (KEP), the central organ of the Catholic church in Poland, adopted an official “position on the question of LGBT+” in which it recommended the creation of “clinics to help people who want to regain their…natural sexual orientation”

2021For 20 years Meir Menachem Kaiser tried to reclaim ownership of a building on 12 Małachowskiego Street in Sosnowiec
a small city in the province of Silesia in southwestern Poland
home to about 30,000 Jews until World War II
Few of them survived the war but Kaiser was among them
one of the last of a large family that was almost totally exterminated
(OSV News) — Pope Francis accepted the resignation of a Polish bishop in whose diocese a priest organized a “sexual orgy” as Polish media reported
24 statement the reasons why Bishop Grzegorz Kaszak of Sosnowiec resigned
but commentators in Poland expressed surprise at the news of what they called a “fast-track” resignation
“I am surprised that the reaction of the Vatican was so quick,” said Tomasz Terlikowski
Polish journalist and former head of a sexual abuse investigation commissioned by the Dominican order
when canon law requires bishops to turn in their resignation to the pope
“We can always complain it did not happen 10 years ago
but still — given the recent events — the reaction was very
very quick,” Terlikowski told OSV News
The recent events that Terlikowski mentioned were what the media in Poland described as a “sexual orgy” or “gay orgy” that happened in a rectory in Dabrowa Górnicza — a town in the Sosnowiec Diocese
30-31 sex party involving a male prostitute in a priest’s apartment ended with one of the participants needing medical assistance after overdosing on medicine
which initial reports indicated were erectile dysfunction pills
Polish media reported that the priest organizing the party
allegedly tried to stop paramedics from entering the rectory
The earlier incident Terlikowski referenced
when the then-acting rector of the Sosnowiec seminary “allegedly got into a scuffle at a gay club” but kept his job for over a year
even after Polish media reported the situation
Vatican later dissolved the seminary altogether
Regarding Bishop Kaszak’s resignation
“I think the Vatican was so quick in reacting because of the clear pressure visible not only in Polish
and my impression is that pressure makes sense
and that this case was simply spectacular.”
it’s not the first scandalous case in Bishop Kaszak’s diocese — we can’t pretend the speedy procedure is pure coincidence,” he added
The priest responsible for the party at the rectory issued a statement circulated by the Polish media soon after the scandal erupted
denying it was an “orgy” or that he had prevented paramedics from accessing the rectory
“I perceive this as an obvious attack on the church
tasks and mission,” he said in a statement sent to Gazeta Wyborcza
aware of the danger of losing a person’s life
I do not want to take steps to save it,” he added
The local prosecutor is conducting an investigation in the case of the sex party
but other dark clouds over Bishop Kaszak’s diocese also are being investigated by the prosecutor
the bodies of two clergymen were found in the diocese — a 26-year-old deacon was murdered and a 45-year-old priest committed suicide
prosecutors said the two had been in a conflictual relationship and that the priest killed the deacon
then later killed himself by throwing himself in front of a train
which also reported the curia knew about the psychological problems of the murderer for a long time and that the priest had sent the deacon threatening messages
“I think it’s important that a group of Polish bishops who want these kinds of cases to move forward quicker and know how important communicating scandals transparently is
is in Rome right now for the synod,” Terlikowski said
“That might have made things move a lot faster,” he added
was appointed apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Sosnowiec
“Now the big question is who will be appointed as bishop next,” Terlikowski told OSV News
but he is busy with his own problematic diocese that he took over not long ago in Katowice,” he added
Terlikowski pointed out that the problem of Sosnowiec Diocese can be seen broader in a light of crisis of sexual abuse in the church in Poland as well as mistakes critics of St
John Paul II accuse him of making in the appointment of bishops by the end of his pontificate

The bishop resigned after one of his priests was placed under criminal investigation over reports from last month that the priest had organised a sex party

The Pope on Tuesday accepted the resignation of a Polish bishop whose diocese has been hit by reports of an orgy involving priests and a male sex worker
The Vatican did not give any reason for the departure of 59-year-old Bishop Grzegorz Kaszak as head of the diocese of Sosnowiec, in southwestern Poland.
The bishop resigned after one of his priests was placed under criminal investigation over reports from last month that he had organised a sex party. It was also alleged that the male sex worker who had been invited to the orgy involving priests from the diocese had lost consciousness due to an overdose of erectile dysfunction pills.
Waldemar Lubniewski, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Sosnowiec, said at the time the investigation was focused on a “failure to provide assistance to a person in a situation that poses an immediate threat of loss of life or serious damage to health”.
Father Tomasz Z, the priest who allegedly arranged the sex party within his church apartment, was identified solely by the diocese. He spoke with the Polish media last month, contesting the specific details of the incident. He questioned the accuracy of the count of priests present during the alleged sex party and remarked, “it is worth reading what the definition of an orgy is”.
He brushed off the controversy over the events in his apartment as “an obvious attack on the church, including the clergy and believers” and said that the uproar would not have happened if “something similar had happened” to a person outside the clergy.
But the diocese largely corroborated the media reports. It said that an outside investigative commission had concluded that Father Tomasz committed “a very serious violation of moral norms” as well as of his obligations as a priest.
In a statement last month, the diocese said that the “participation” of Father Tomasz “in what happened on the night of August 30-31 is not in doubt”. It said that he had been stripped of all functions at the diocese and was “sent to live outside the parish”.
Kaszak announced his resignation on 24 October but did not provide any more details. He has not been accused of having been involved in the alleged orgy but reports say he is being held responsible for the conduct of the priests under his diocese.
“I ask everyone to forgive my human limitations,” he wrote in his statement. “If I have offended anyone or neglected something, I am very sorry.”
Kaszak was designated as a bishop in 2009 by the then-Pope Benedict XVI, following a brief stint as the second-in-command in the Vatican’s family office.
The Vatican embassy in Poland has announced that Archbishop Adrian Galbas of Katowice will serve as a temporary administrator, overseeing the diocese of Sosnowiec until the appointment of a new bishop.
