Poland (WKRC) - A funeral home had to apologize after a corpse it was transporting fell out of a hearse and into traffic
The Hades Funeral Service in Poland came under fire when a driver was surprised by a white sheet fluttering onto his car window
only to push it away to see a body lying in the road
The driver initially believed he hit the person
who was crumpled in the middle of a crosswalk
A photo of the body circulated around local media
forcing the funeral home to take accountability
Retreading operations at the Bandag facility in Lanklaar
Bandag Europe NV announced its intention to close the retreading plant
The company stresses that it has “no other option than to take structural measures” such as this in response to the “significant decrease” in the European retreading market over the past ten years
a trend that has resulted in production overcapacity and uncompetitive production costs

Press Release from URBNSURF:
LLC (SGE) and URBNSURF are excited to announce a strategic partnership to develop the world’s first international Surf Park Safety program
By combining SGE’s industry-leading aquatic safety training programs and risk prevention services with URBNSURF’s proven surf park expertise and operational best practices
the partnership will create a technology-agnostic safety program for surf parks globally providing training standards
The surf park industry is an exciting era marked by rapid technological advancements and unprecedented worldwide expansion
The considerable growth within the industry includes the evolution of both dynamic wave venues
and stationary wave facilities that use a small footprint to offer standing waves or sheet wave technologies
Each surf venue offers a distinct surf experience
the Surf Park Safety program will provide training programs
and best practices for any surf venue to foster an effective safety culture that will enhance the customer experience
Consistency will be a key focus of the program
ensuring surf parks deliver safe and memorable experiences while being equipped to respond swiftly and effectively in case of any emergency
As governing bodies will undoubtedly seek to create regulations for surf venues
the program will provide a blueprint for these bodies to create informed regulations.
“This partnership represents a watershed moment for surf park safety
By combining SGE’s evidence-driven safety programs with URBNSURF’s expertise as a proven operator
along with other surf park safety experts, we envision a standardized safety program that will provide Surf Parks the foundation to deliver a safe experience and elevates industry benchmarks
As more facilities rapidly open globally and more people embrace the sport of surfing
it is imperative that all surf venues operate safely to maintain consumer confidence and avoid overreaching or reactionary regulations
The waterpark industry has done an excellent job of finding this balance over the past 40 years and I’m confident we can do the same for surf parks.” said Wess Long
Shaun Hutchinson says ‘’We’re stoked to be partnering with StarGuard to pioneer safety and operations within the industry
Both organisations are experts and have extensive experience in our respective areas and by joining forces we look forward to guiding the industry through this rapid expansion period
URBNSURF have successfully operated Melbourne now for nearly four years and it was a steep aquatic safety learning curve in the early days
It was a natural next step for URBNSURF to become a research and development site for StarGuard Elite
StarGuard Elite has amassed a variety of experience within the aquatic industry
and with their dynamic approach to surf park safety
it will ensure a practicable standard that every surf park can follow.”
Notable elements of this collaboration will include:
The Surf Park Safety program is anticipated to be launched in the first quarter of 2024. For further information, please visit www.starguardelite.com or contact SGE at [email protected].

followed closely by URBNSURF Sydney at Sydney Olympic Park
set to open in 2024 with further projects planned around the country

Neighbors with opposing views on the current demolition and upcoming development of historic McMillan Park in D.C.
Save McMillan” rally outside the 25-acre site along North Capitol Street Northwest was met with another group who believe the demolition and development should move forward
The redevelopment of McMillan Park was a source of controversy
even before recent proposals were made public
the large estate along North Capitol Street in Northwest D.C
housed a sand-filtration water purification plant
and was used to store water underground for the District
Because of its historic significance and concerns redevelopment and commercialization would bring additional traffic to the already congested Bloomingdale area
many neighbors are still fighting the planned overhaul
who lives on First Street in northwest D.C.
said they will be filing a federal temporary restraining order to stop the demolition
“There are actually federally imposed restrictive covenants that run with the deed to this land
and those covenants in the deed have been violated by the current project as it is planned and by the ongoing demolition that you see up there,” Stargard said
He wanted the plan to continue and for D.C
something that’s important to this neighborhood
That’s why we invested in this neighborhood.”
asked if demolition supporters claimed they wanted a park
“I think it’s important that our city focus on green space and parks
and there’s no bigger place than here at McMillan,” Capozzi said
“I can’t think of a bigger green space than to leave it how it is and improve it as a park.”
Regardless of what side of the debate they fell on
many in the area just want something to happen
Amy Zhou said she’s lived in the area for three years and the way the McMillan Park property is currently fenced up makes it difficult to navigate
the space is an inaccessible plot of land that doesn’t provide any benefit to the community.”

It was in the summer of 1974 that Roman Halaba left Poland and moved to Colorado
who had moved with her parents back in 1967
In 1975 they had bought a duplex on 44th and Harlan so they could live on one side while her parents lived on the other
Theresa became a beautician and seamstress while Roman worked in the millwright union
attached to many jobs including the luggage return system at DIA
Theresa talks of Roman traveling to Wyoming for long periods of work
Roman slept in his truck and they both did “whatever it took” to pay bills and provide for their family
But ask them about Wheat Ridge and they smile
Roman says it’s the best place he’s ever lived in
quiet and all the neighbors got along.
In 1985 the Halabas sold their duplex and moved to their present home on Newland
They believe they are the last ones on the street from that era.
Much of their family had left Poland after World War II
but a few chose to go back for the low cost of living
which had a population of 37,000 at the time
They miss the friendly people and safe neighborhoods
where everyone walked to their destinations
It’s no wonder they fell in love with Wheat Ridge
which had similar characteristics and population: a view of the mountains and safe neighborhoods
Roman and Theresa speak of the car thefts and the homeless population
They both feel that Wheat Ridge is beautiful and quiet
There are not many kids on their street anymore
But asked if he would make the same choice again
Roman has been volunteering as a soccer referee and coach
When we talked about soccer in the ‘70s his eyes were as wide as his smile
I say secret because while he showed me a picture of huge mushrooms he brings home from his trips
there’s no chance in hell he’ll ever share those locations with anyone
Theresa spoke more about her four kids and two grandchildren
I asked her if she ever volunteered for any city commissions
Her answer was similar to many Europeans that had moved here a while back: the government was not very clear or open to volunteers
But she did go to the rec center and take some yoga classes.
With two of their children living here in Wheat Ridge and the others in Castle Rock and Aurora
They love the home they’ve made right here in Wheat Ridge
With only a few months until the school year is over
students are bubbling with excitement and the possibility of
making sure your car is in top shape can make all the difference between

A new law targeting the legacy of Poland’s Soviet-dominated past requires the removal of monuments that glorify communism
The legislation has reignited a long-simmering debate in Poland
and prompted threats of a harsh response from Russia
A monument in the center of Brzeg dedicated to “Polish-Soviet brotherhood.” The law
which builds on previous decommunization efforts
comes into force in late October and calls for more than 200 monuments that “symbolize or propagate” totalitarian regimes to be removed from Poland’s streets
But while this monument will almost certainly be dismantled
Red Army soldiers immortalized in shining steel in Dabrowa Gornicza
Support for the legislation depends on the region
and even the individual monuments in question
Authorities in Dabrowa Gornicza have spoken out against the law and will reportedly hire archaeologists to search for human remains
which could legally protect several of the city’s Soviet monuments
which had its crowning communist star cut off in 2016
is reportedly slated for demolition as soon as the law comes into force
The column is dedicated to the Red Army’s victory over Nazi forces in World War II
after a secret pact was made between the U.S.S.R
the two totalitarian regimes turned against each other and the Soviet Army ultimately lost an estimated 600,000 soldiers pushing Nazi forces back across Polish soil
while Poland today marks the Red Army advance as the start of nearly 50 years of Soviet occupation
Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN)
which was established by parliament in 1998 to address “crimes against the Polish nation” during the Soviet and Nazi occupations of the country
says around 150,000 Poles were killed under Soviet rule
who oversaw the creation of the monument legislation
the first wave of changing street names and removal of soviet monuments was in the early 90s…
If we want to build some basis for our future history we need to finish it
It was our mistake that we didn’t do it completely in the 90s
and that’s why we need to finish it now.”(Photo: EPA)

A local told RFE/RL that villagers would physically prevent any attempt to remove the monument

Russian commentators have dubbed those behind the law “the Taliban of Europe,” a comparison that former IPN President Lukasz Kaminski rejects
“Our plan was not to destroy the monuments like the Taliban did
but to collect them in a special museum to show them as a sign of Soviet domination of Poland for future generations.”
A monument to Soviet-Polish brotherhood in Slubice
The IPN has designated an existing Cold War museum in Podborsko
as the site where the monuments will be exhibited

Russia has expressed its outrage at the new law
citing a 1994 bilateral treaty the countries signed that guaranteed the protection of war memorials
Poland says the treaty only applies to monuments erected over human remains

StarGuard ELITE (SGE) and the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC) together announce the CMAHC certification of the StarGuard Lifeguard Program – the first ever CMAHC certification of a lifeguard training program
and wellness of the lifeguards who complete SGE training and the aquatic facilities they serve
The CMAHC certification program was launched in 2018 to help educate the public about products and services that meet the strict
science-based standards in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC)
the guidance in the MAHC helps reduce the risk for disease outbreaks
and chemical injuries at public aquatic facilities
The CMAHC awards certification to services or products that comply with the relevant or applicable standards in the latest MAHC edition
“As a long-time supporter of the MAHC and its evidence-based guidelines for aquatic health and safety
we are extremely proud to have the StarGuard Lifeguard Program receive the first ever CMAHC certification for a lifeguard training program
We hope this brings confidence to all lifeguards who complete our program and the aquatic managers who hire them,” said Wess Long
The StarGuard lifeguard program is an industry-leading training curriculum and internationally- recognized certification
SGE’s evidence-based protocols and adult learner activities are the foundation of a curriculum that fosters practical skills and retention
SGE partners with American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) for all CPR
and emergency oxygen training elements that are used in the program
The StarGuard program is built to be objective
and adaptable to any type of pool or non-surf waterfront
CMAHC certification is not a single occurrence
the intent is to build a long-term quality control partnership
the CMAHC re-evaluates each certified service or product annually to ensure it continues to meet the same high standards required in the MAHC in order to maintain certification
Services or products that earn a CMAHC certification are said to be “CMAHC-certified” and may display the CMAHC certification emblem to demonstrate they have been evaluated for conformance with the requirements in the latest MAHC edition
“We have been working hard to expand our certification program to include lifeguard programs and were honored to work with StarGuard ELITE to issue this first ever certification of a lifeguard training,” said Dewey Case
it is critical that our nations lifeguards are trained with the highest caliber curriculums and learner activities
CMAHC certification can serve as an important step in this kind of quality control.”

Ford has a big hit on its hands with the Bronco and its smaller sibling the Bronco Sport
We’ve seen huge markups on the former but very few on the latter
Now that Bronco Sport Heritage editions are making their way to dealers
confirmed that it’s asking $75,505 for one such example
To be very clear, the Ford Bronco Sport Heritage edition is a cool-looking little SUV
Dressed up with an attractive combination of classic styling and modern capability it was sure to be a hit
What’s amazing though is that Ford says that this specific example is worth $46,730
That made us doubt a recent report showing a dealer asking $75,505 for the same vehicle
First spotted by AutoSpies.com
the photo they posted shows a number of additional fees on top of MSRP
They include $295 for nitrogen-filled tires
a vehicle protection system not unlike Lo-Jack
Those would probably sneak by most buyers as no big deal but the $25,000 “Market Adjustment” tacked on at the bottom certainly won’t
Read: California Porsche Dealership Asking A $250k Markup On A 911 Sport Classic
Adding further doubt to our suspicion that this wasn’t a real photograph is the fact that Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley has specifically come out against greedy dealer markups like this
Not only does data confirm that markups damage brand loyalty and experience
but it leads to lower customer satisfaction too
a lead sheet sent to us by the dealer says that the internet price is $46,730
So you might be able to imagine how shocked we were when the dealer told us over the phone that indeed
the price for this Bronco Sport Heritage edition is $75,505
That’s a full 61.5% increase over what the automaker itself says the car should be sold to the customer for
Kind of ironic that there’s a sign on the wall behind the Bronco in the dealer that says “One Goal – Customer Satisfaction” isn’t it
there’s a text that reads “as long as we make the biggest profit possible.”
It’s worth noting that Ford isn’t alone in dealing with this issue. General Motors has publically come out against the practice and even put measures in place to de-incentivize it and that’s better than most automakers who do little to nothing when dealers get this type of greed
Ford too deserves praise for the way it’s handled similar situations in the past
Not only has it responded to stories similar to this one with direct involvement at the dealer level to get prices right but representatives from Ford have offered help to find dealers who won’t gouge customers like North County Ford is attempting to do here

Bridgestone Europe announced that three of its tyre plants in Spain – Bilbao
Puente San Miguel and Burgos – had begun sourcing 100 per cent of their electricity from renewable sources
This programme has been extended to other facilities in the region
and the company shares that the Tatabanya plant in Hungary and Stargard and Poznan plants in Poland will be moving to 100 per cent green electricity
90 per cent of the electricity consumed in Bridgestone’s European plants comes from renewable resources
The tyre maker describes this shift as a “milestone moment” for its business
“It’s important to also acknowledge how this impacts our customers
Partnering with a tyre manufacturer that sources 90 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy brings benefits to car manufacturers and OEMs and their own value chain,” comments Bridgestone
Bridgestone EMIA will either temporarily close or reduce production plants across its European manufacturing network in response to the COVID-19 pandemic
Its Béthune plant in France and the Bari plant in Italy will be closed until 6 April
Puente San Miguel and Burgos plants in Spain
and Tatabanya plant in Hungary will all be running at a reduced production capacity
Bridgestone states that the changes are being made to align Bridgestone’s supply with predicted demand in the current market
It added that it has “sufficient product supply to meet customer demand and its distribution centres
plant warehouses and logistics teams will continue to fill orders.” It added that it will “continue to evaluate the situation on a need basis.”
Bridgestone states it is “taking the appropriate preventive measures in accordance with its protocols for the prevention of occupational hazards
and strictly following the guidance and recommendations of the health authorities in all its work centers
thorough procedures and checklists to ensure safety in the workplace have been put in place.”
Bridgestone previously told Tyres & Accessories that it had restricted domestic and international business travel as a precautionary measure
while office workers were working from home
In addition to the alignment of supply with the drop in demand in the market
its representative told T&A: “In some regions
technical unemployment measures are also being put in place for employees in office
Bridgestone said that its “chief priority during this unprecedented time is to ensure the well-being and safety of its employees and the integrity of its operations.” Its statement added that it will continue to “monitor the situation closely and abide by the advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO)
as well as government regulations in countries in which it operates.”
Bridgestone has reduced capacity at seven plants in Europe
Business within the European retreading market is being subjected to centrifugal forces
While the tyre majors who supplement their new tyre portfolios with mould cure retreaded lines increasingly monopolise the growing premium segment
the budget segment is also enjoying growing attention
Competition is stiff in both segments and mid-range suppliers find themselves under increasing pressure
and as a consequence are striving to reposition and – particularly on the flanks of their markets – more broadly position themselves
The latest company to introduce a clear multi-brand strategy is Bridgestone Bandag
Its “premium Bandag retreading brand” will retain its strong position at the upper end of the market
and has been joined by a new product line for the budget market: “Protread by Bandag”
the company outlines its plans and motivations
The reworking the Bridgestone Bandag brand structure underwent in Europe in recent years is now complete
after Bridgestone’s 2007 acquisition of Bandag
which took many within the industry by surprise
interest-driven politics in North America were the initial priority
The task facing European management in the following years was clear
franchise partner network and the production site in Lanklaar
Belgium needed to be integrated into Bridgestone’s own organisation in a way that enabled sustainable and mutually promising development
Over the last few years we’ve reported on Bridgestone’s efforts to carry out the integration and establish a market strategy that is market-oriented and in line with the company’s goals
Now Bridgestone Bandag’s management in Brussels say its mission accomplished
The Retread manager within the Japanese tyre maker’s European headquarters is convinced that the current two-pronged strategy with the “Bandag” and “Protread by Bandag” brands anchors the company firmly in both important growth segments within the European retreading market
Janssens shares that the decision to focus upon the budget market was not an easy one for Bandag
The brand had always been recognised by retreaders as the pre-cure premium product par excellence
concern existed that the brand could be harmed by introducing a ‘less valuable’ brand unless it was correctly positioned
Since Bridgestone’s acquisition of Bandag eight years ago the company’s European headquarters made a number of such attempts to expand the brand portfolio
a structure has unquestionably developed over the years that can at most be considered “industry-related” but actually is more “industry-independent”
As market polarisation has been significant in recent years and the level of professionalism amongst fleet operators has also developed further
a move that has brought them closer to the manufacturers of new tyres
independent retreaders have been prepared to adapt accordingly and have mostly participated in the change that followed the Bandag acquisition
Having the world’s largest tyre maker at their side offers them significant growth potential – and this also applies to the retreading segment
There is no doubt that the steady convergence between Bandag and Bridgestone’s truck tyre portfolio can be seen as a survival strategy
Bandag of course continues to be the European and global retreading market leader
management at Bridgestone Bandag estimate the brand’s market share at 16 per cent from an estimated total of around six million retreaded tyres
Bridgestone Bandag’s market share should thus be twice as high
as Bridgestone’s mould cure retreading operations in the UK and France (Bulldog and SLBR) account for only a small share of the company’s total
Yet it must be noted at this point that in the last 15 years or so a small portion of Bandag’s market share has slipped away
Its position as industry leader – aside from Michelin
Recamic and Pneu Laurent remains in a league of its own – has come under pressure ‘from above’
from new tyre manufacturers who have taken an increasingly large slice of the cake with their growing fleet business – packages that include new tyres
and meet the needs of many internationally-active fleet operators
this trend has taken a turn for the better in the past three to four years as Bridgestone Bandag has succeeded in expanding its dealer base throughout Europe
and has utilised synergies with Bridgestone
Imports into Europe have risen in the last decade and a half
companies that previously played virtually no role in Europe
Janssens observes that the growth in these importers’ market share has largely stopped in recent times
in part due to the response from established material manufacturers
who now offer products with a corresponding price-performance ratio
it can be assumed that importers continue to hold a significant share of the budget segment
The Retread manager estimates that the budget segment accounts for no less than 25 per cent of the European retreading market
while he estimates the premium segment to currently be 45 per cent and the quality segment 30 per cent
Changes within fleet business and the growing presence of new tyre manufacturers in the retreading segment have thus anchored Bandag and its partners more firmly in the upper market segment – thanks to Bridgestone
Because the premium segment is becoming ever more the domain of the large
and at the same time further polarisation is occurring
the market is developing into a market for purportedly independent retreaders and their customers – the Bandag Partner’s traditional territory
‘Protread by Bandag” was introduced partly in response to requests from these Bandag partners for an alternative to the Bandag brand
While the Bridgestone Bandag retread manager doesn’t believe that many of these partners utilised third-party products – contrary to their contract agreements – in order to offer their ‘own’ customers an alternative for the segment below the upper market segment
he admits that a need for a further brand was there
Protread was originally a retreading brand the company used in Thailand
The decision to cover the lower market segment by introducing a second brand alongside Bandag was made in 2012 and it is now being gradually implemented
At present the company offers ten designs under the Protread by Bandag label
one sixth the quantity sold under the Bandag brand name
The portfolio particularly includes products for regional transport
on-off road and building site applications
as opposed to the Bandag brand focus on long distance transport products
Protread treads are all developed in-house and include Firestone patterns as well as some former Bandag patterns that the company wishes to continue offering
A clear price deviation exists between Bandag and Protread; Janssens explains the sell-out pricing by saying that if Bandag prices represent 100 per cent
Protread should be (depending on product) between 25 and 35 per cent lower
This price variation correlates with associated costs
As Bridgestone has increasingly aligned its Bandag range with its new tyre portfolio in recent years
compounds and technologies used in new tyre production are utilised in their manufacture
Janssens meanwhile stresses that the “Protread price-performance ratio is very consistent” and that the treads are always utilised by Bandag Partners and their existing Bandag premium technology
Of the current 142 Bandag franchise partners across Europe
“We strengthen our Bandag franchisees with Protread,” comments the Retread manager about the availability of Bridgestone Bandag products for the two most important segments in the European retreading market
“Our partners are now able to compete with our products in a larger market
increasing their competitiveness.” At the same time
Protread also strengthens the Bandag brand – at least indirectly
the value of the Bandag name is further upgraded through its growing closeness to Bridgestone’s new tyre portfolio and a decreasing reliance on products such as its “ValueLine” range; this enables Bandag to defend itself ‘from above’ against competition from the middle and lower market segments
and instead of attacking these segments ‘from below’ with its own brand
Bandag can stand apart as a premium product and be further expanded as such
The two brands’ ranges are kept “clean” through a clear separation of both products
and a cannibalisation of both line-ups is avoided
possessing a second brand enables the company to connect with its partners over the long time and gives it the scope to make potential new partners an introductory offer through which – it is hoped – a long-term collaboration as a Bandag franchise partner can develop
The growing similarity between Bandag treads and new Bridgestone tyres and their increasingly integrated marketing has also been accompanied by a rise in tread production and also a new facility for their manufacture
Following on from the inauguration of the new truck tyre plant in Stargard
Bridgestone is now bringing a new production site for treads into operation at that site; its close proximity to the new tyre factory’s compounding facility guarantees the highest standards
Regular production of treads in Stargard is scheduled to begin this summer
the investment in Poland hasn’t been made in order to replace the existing 25,500 tonne per annum capacity Bandag plant in Lanklaar
in future the Stargard plant will manufacture the high-end Bandag product while Lanklaar will focus on all products; Lanklaar won’t however be restricted to the production of budget treads from the Protread range following the start of operations in Stargard
