In 2010, Aleksander decided to kayak the Atlantic Ocean saying that he had paddled almost everything else.
Actually, Aleksander didn’t decide to kayak the Atlantic.
“With my hand on my heart, it wasn’t my idea,” Aleksander recalled to The New York Times Magazine in 2018. “I was infected with a virus.”
The virus-induced journey saw him kayak from Senegal to Brazil. He paddled over 3,300 miles in 99 days, saw his skin break out in a salt water induced rash, almost lost his fingernails to exposure, and had his eyes rage from conjunctivitis. The suffering was worth it however as Aleksander’s journey saw him become the first human to ever cross the Atlantic in a kayak.
Aleksander took a longer route for his second trip across this Atlantic, this time paddling from Lisbon to Florida in 2013. The 7,721-mile journey took 167 days and, again, was a first of its kind expedition.
Aleksander completed one of his last goals on February 22 when he reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. After admiring the view, he sat on a rock to rest then died.

EUROPE: A rail motorway service linking Bettembourg-Dudelange in Luxembourg with Poznan-Swarzędz in Poland has been launched by Clip Group and CFL Multimodal
The first train left Bettembourg on January 28
There will initially be four round trips per week
but the operators expect to increase this to six per week in the near future
The new service provides ‘a unique opportunity to all Polish road hauliers to go to intermodal’
‘With connections from Luxembourg to Spain we have the possibility to create one of the longest rail connections in Europe with the shortest transit time.’
Traction is provided by CFL Cargo in co-operation with Ecco Rail of Poland
‘The expansion of our intermodal service offering to Central Europe will give us the opportunity to address the craneable and noncraneable trailer market’
said CFL Multimodal Managing Director Fraenz Benoy
‘This service can transport up to 15 000 semi-trailers per year
This is equivalent to saving 20 000 tonnes of CO2
which clearly reflects our endeavour to provide both sustainable and reliable services.’
SPAIN: Infrastructure manager ADIF is developing plans for a ‘rail motorway’ corridor to carry lorry trailers by rail between Zaragoza
ADIF is currently upgrading the mostly single-track electrified line by lengthening passing loops to 750 m at Selgua
LUXEMBOURG: National railway CFL has acquired a 64·5% stake in Manuport
which in turn holds 50% stake in the Luxport Group which operates Luxembourg’s only inland port at Mertert on the River Moselle and is also active at Trier in Germany and Metz in France
FRANCE: A rolling motorway service has been launched to carry unaccompanied lorry trailers between the Mediterranean port of Sète near Montpellier and Valenton to the southeast of Paris
The service has been developed by the government with the aim of reducing road traffic

hours of concerts in the Old Market Square
are the main highlights of this year's Poznań Old Jazz Festival
There's room for debate on whether Poznań can truly be called a city of jazz
given that major festivals and events have gradually been moving away
What's undeniable is that the oldest and most classic jazz event still thrives here
this time for its 16th edition on the last day of August
The festival has previously hosted outstanding artists such as legendary clarinettist Acker Bilk and English trumpeter Kenny Ball.
This year's festival theme is "Train to New Orleans - The Summer Station"
Dworcowa (an extension of platform 9 of the Poznań Main Station) will be one of the main venues
Artists will arrive there in vintage cars and embark on a musical journey by a historic train to the town of Swarzędz and back
The festival's main events will take place in a new venue
Thanks to the support of Poznań authorities and Estrada Poznańska
will be held at Pasaż Kultury in the heart of the Old Market Square
between the Arsenał Municipal Gallery and the Military Museum of Wielkopolska
The evening's musical line-up includes South West Oldtime All Stars from Germany
The German artists from South West Oldtime All Stars draws inspiration from Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven bands from nearly a century ago
Festival organisers have chosen this band for having been the first to give soloists more room for improvisation
Jazzmen features the initials of its late founder and leader
"Remembrance of Louis Armstrong"
their sound is profoundly influenced by the expressive voice and jazz sensibility of their present vocalist
"Famous Jazz Duets" is inspired by collaborations between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
The fascinating Los Angeles Trio follows a style reminiscent of the West Coast of the USA
Their music is described as elegantly clear
evoking the fragrance of seaside promenades and the discreet charm of luxurious nightclubs in the City of Angels
The trio features renowned musicians Bogdan Hołownia
Andrzej "Bruner" Gulczyński (formerly of the band Nocna Zmiana Bluesa)
a group of jazzmen from the Warsaw University of Technology Club "Stodoła"
they have blended classic Dixieland and New Orleans themes with Polish hits from the interwar and communist periods
have embraced the style characteristic of New Orleans street parades
Their repertoire is heavily influenced by musicians who stemmed from New Orleans such as Louis Armstrong
Representing the Poznań music scene is Happy Jazz Band
All its musicians are graduates of Poznań's Music Academy with a passion for swing and old jazz
Their repertoire spans from Louis Armstrong to Frank Sinatra
and possibly the most anticipated ensemble
they are led by the festival's Artistic Director Piotr Soroka
this band has performed at hundreds of festivals and concerts across Poland
including collaborations with American singers Diane Davidson and Donna Brown
they played at the 50th Internationales Dixieland Festival Dresden
being the only Polish artists among 40 bands from 11 countries
